How would you improve your community? – Another interesting ask by the daily writing prompt.
In one sense I’m kind of disappointed in my community. Everyone seems to be so out for themselves and angry. We live in one of the richest counties in the country. Yet we still have hungry and homeless people.
I contribute to food banks and local organizations. If I see someone in need I try to do the courteous thing and help. Be it helping someone with shopping bags load their car if I see them struggling or just smiling and exchanging pleasant greetings when I pass people.
I’ll keep eyes on neighbors homes while they are away. I’ll pick up peoples trash when the wind knocks over cans. I’ve mowed neighbors lawn when they have struggled. I’ve shoveled others driveways and walks. All things people do for each other. Well, some people, well, few people. And that’s the issue.
I support local small businesses (I don’t like big box stores). We attend community events have supported our local schools.
Everyone is so busy, few if any take the time to say hello or even wave. Communication is broken and that is due to many factors like politics, economic and ethnic differences or beliefs. Intolerance seems to be at an all time high. I try my best to accept people for who they are and the differences we may have. But I’m tiring of people with people who have no respect for me.
You see the selfishness daily on the roads around here. Courtesy and trust seemed to have eroded. Things have gotten to the point in my own neighborhood that some of the extremist have me so concerned that I’m adding to my weapon collection. For they have told me I’m the enemy because of my political beliefs. So, I’m going to be ready to rock and roll if they want.
This all is leading to the breakdown of society as we know it. And if we don’t get control of ourselves soon we will be fighting each other in ways that harken back to the 1800s.
I think the big part of the community I live in problems are due to a huge growth spurt and change in the community. This used to be rural farmland and now its a thriving metropolis. Instead of lifelong residents its a transit community with no foundation anymore.
