When to Post? Traditional or Freestyle

Having worked in the newspaper publishing industry for several decades I’m pretty deadline driven on the job that pays the bills. And I’ve thought about this for some time in terms of the differences between this style/technology of publishing vs the traditional way of either a daily morning paper or magazine periodical weekly or monthly.

Of course I’m no publishing giant like the one I work for. I do this when I can, and post when I can. I haven’t used the schedule option yet. I make a lot of my post late in the evenings or early mornings. Really at random times depending on the day of the week. I wonder if that affects my exposure to a wider audience.

As I’m working towards posting each day, (been pretty close the last few months) and thinking about posting more work maybe 2-3 times a day, I think should I space this out to like a morning and dinnertime post. Then I got to thinking, does it even matter in this worldwide time zone differences. It’s not like I have breaking news, but I’m wondering as I do more what might be the optimal times to post. When might be the optimal times that followers would see it and not be lost in the crowd? Not that I can change my random posting schedule in the short-term, my life is to erratic and too many other responsibilities.

And then again the pressure to do it at a certain time might even put the type of pressure on that makes this not fun and enjoyable. But I think I will search around and see what others say on this topic.

You know who your friends are. And it’s not defined in a Facebook list most times. At least for us old timers.

I’m beginning to see the limitation of having a rear wheel drive sports car and snow in the forecast. Then again I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. It’s too much fun to drive when conditions are good. Plus it reminds me to not play hero in trying to make it back and forth to work in horrible conditions. Did it for decades and it didn’t earn me crap other than a ton of risk and hours upon hours of extra white knuckle driving time.

Sat in a doctor’s office today waiting for my appointment. A woman with a young child was there also. She was using her phone to entertain the child with a game. Trouble is this things volume was all the way up and it had the most annoying tune playing over and over. One guy got up and went to the hallway outside the office. The office staff closed the glass windows to their work area. Kind of made me think where is the responsibility in this in terms of conduct in public. I thought about asking her to turn it down but something just told me that wasn’t going to be received well, so I held my tongue. (not something commonly done)  Thankfully I was called back into the offices. Don’t get me wrong, I love children. I have compassion for parents dealing with a sick child but this was an adult pain clinic so I’m assuming it was for the parent being the child would not be seeing this type of doctor yet. I don’t mind that she distracted the child from becoming agitated and settled it with a diversion. I do mind that it seemed she was totally unaware it was bothering everyone else around her. I should chalk it up to one of those little things I should let go of and not bother me. So I’m writing about it and forgetting it.

But it does bring me to a conversation that I had with a coworker last night. How do we talk to one another when things are in conflict. Seems like everything escalates way to quickly if you’re talking politics or respect for personal space or noise issue or a gazillion other possible conflicts when people are thrown together. People take great offence as to being asked to do the simplest things or behave in an acceptable manner to the norm of the group. Then the group sits silent until pushed to the limit instead of two people just talking something out and both listening and learning. Everybody has a “TUDE” and it’s getting out of hand. It’s almost getting like the wild west. If you say something you better be ready to throw down in a serious way instead of talking and listening and coming to an agreement. We really haven’t evolved all that much in reality.

Such is life, I’ve rambled on here too long already. A good evening to everyone and as always good health.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.

  1. Mike, for what it’s worth – blog posting/scheduling – I do use the scheduling option (I’m a little OCD, and I thought if might help build an audience if I was consistent time wise – I don’t have much of an audience, so I have no data on the results!), I try to keep a few posts in my drafts folder, and I do post 5 days a week. I don’t post more than once a day (OK, once I did to meet a contest deadline) because I assume that other people only read blogs once a day like I do (yes, I am ASSuming), and does anyone really want to see 2 posts from me waiting in their blog feed?

I will tell you, any food/recipe posts get a lot more attention than my card posts!

    • Kathy, thanks so much for the feedback. And by the way I look forward to your card post and hope to get down to HorseSpirit’s and purchase many for the coming year.

      • Oh, Mike, that is such a nice thing to say! Thank you! I really think blogging is about what YOU want to do…just do YOU.

  2. Mike I’ve posted once since Halloween, but I just love the variety of pages on WordPress. Whether you post once a month or once a day, you mix cool photos with perspective. Good perspective in life and behind the lens. Don’t worry about the quantity, the quality is already there.

    • sorry about the late reply but thank you so much for the kind words. I hope the year ahead will provide lots of opportunities for more images and thoughts from everyone.
