Howard County Cold

Saw another photographer discuss how he was trying to embrace the season of winter. I believe he was also commenting on the unique opportunities to get once in a lifetime events like a good portion of the bay frozen over. It’s really true, winter with snow and ice and cold afford some wonderful images.

So I’m going to try to get with the program myself, even though it’s the last day of Feb 2015. Then again we all may be saved by a series of 60 degree days before the first day of spring and do away with this nonsense.

Humans are the only ones grousing about the cold this year. Wildlife looks very uncomfortable.

By the way, during what decade did people, (kids) stop skating on this lake. We were discussing it back when we were kids there would be dozens if not hundreds of people out there in winter. Hockey games broke out if my memory was correct.

Quote of the Day – ?

“Is it wrong to follow your own blog?”

Mike Hartley

Just for historical sake I didn’t for the first year but one day I wanted to see what my post looked like in the Reader. I felt kind of vain looking at the first few that appeared in the reader and then I realized I need to start coming up with a few good beginning sentences if I wanted to hook people interest and lead with the best image. Now if I could just come up with good images and words this blogging would be a snap. So it has been a learning experience as all of life is.

A better morning than yesterday in Howard County

Could this sign be a bit premature, or it a sign winter may actually end sometime? It has been up for a while now, but each day I stop by it the sun has been out. So yesterday in the snow (again) I figured it was the fitting time for this shot.

Life gets busy for me sometimes. Actually any day where only one job is on the plate for the day is a good day. Those days where you have two to three major time commitments (jobs) are brutal. So I apologize for my few absences this week and I’ll try to make up for it this weekend.

Annapolis Maryland 2

Found some more items from a trip to the State Capital a while back. Can’t wait till it’s this warm again. I might have to travel down there and photograph the ice which has frozen a lot of the Bay before the temps do change though. Got to go download some of the morning shooting.

Here is a link to a earlier set of pictures from Annapolis.

Quote of the Day – for granted

“Taking any Day or Moment for granted, is a regretful practice.”

I am so guilty of taking time for granted. Maybe that is why I feel so rushed now. I’m trying to make up for lost time. It’s hard not to be disappointed at what might have been possible if I only applied myself better. But I think someone once said that if you don’t learn from history your doomed to repeat it. So I’m doing my best to work hard towards a productive and creative future and the ability to do something that makes a difference and hopefully can result in a new career direction that might help get us through our senior years. Don’t worry though, as my wife says, I’m a teenager who refuses to grow up. So hopefully my youthful enthusiasm will come through despite the years on the calendar.

Howard County – from soil to stars

Went out for a ride today with my better half and took a few shots. Wasn’t please with much of it besides the contrast of these two shots which I’ll call from soil to the stars. This is our Howard County.

I was wrong in my photo caption. They are the largest employer in the county if you can believe these stats. Funny, I grew up here before Columbia was an idea in Jim Rouse’s noggin and this place was already a fixture in the county from 1954. We used to walk across Rt 29 (you could do it back then) which was only 1 lane in each direction from Hammond Village to the Southern States store on the corner for a soda. This shop also overlooked (well up the ridge a bit) the APL campus at that time which was impressive. What it has grown to today is amazing. I have some friends and neighbors who work there and they seem to love it. If I had any common sense I’d apply and skip that long commute I do to DC each day.

Havre de Grace Maryland

Hope to get back to this small town this summer or fall and explore it much further. Nice little place to visit. People were very nice. Only spent a few hours one afternoon here in 2013, had a great lunch (right on the water) and it was a mild summer day. We hit a few shops and walked the town a little but didn’t get a chance but to scratch the surface.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Sunrise

Just ran across this old video of a few minutes of drive time in my vault of crap. It warmed me up a bit this morning thinking of seeing that sunrise on my way to the ocean. But being we have a snowstorm going on, I find myself wishing it was summer. Wishing I was off. Wishing I was headed to the beach. Then again, without shoveling, creating snow angels and snowmen or spending hours driving in snow and sleet to and from work, I wouldn’t appreciate summer.

And to be technically correct the bridges name is:  William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bay Bridge. Or as its more commonly known: DaBridge. For example: Can you believe it took me 2 hours just to get to DaBridge? or  DaBridge was backed up all the way to Easton. or  Can you believe what they raised the toll to on DaBridge?

While this was a nice trip over, my wife and I once drove over it at night in the middle of a thunderstorm. We got out of the car a few miles down the road on Rt 50 and looked at the hail damage it caused, hundreds of dimples in the body. But the high wind days are the worst. Especially if your on a bike. But the view is not one to be missed.

Howard County – random Friday captures

I’ve been waiting for some snow to coat this barns roof all season off Bethany Lane. I also love the color of it and how it changes during different times of the day. I wonder if the star still gets lit at night? I’ll have to be more attentive when I come that way.

And despite the fact you’re seeing news reports of spring training, it’s going to be several weeks before the kids return to these fields at Kiwanis-Wallas Park. But when they do I hope to practice some of my sports photography here. I enjoyed coaching and helping coach kids teams here when mine were young. I had hoped at one time to make kids sports a big part of the community paper we did a number of years back. Who knows, maybe it will become a regular thing here if I master sports photography. At least I can afford to get allot closer to the action here than at the professional levels. Plus the kids are far more entertaining. If I had any free time in my life I would think about coaching kids again. Not that I’m any pro at doing it. It’s just a rewarding thing to do when you see the kids grow as athletes and have some success while positively learning to deal with failure.

Quote of the Day – responding

“It’s never to late to learn to temper your responses and resist those triggers that make you respond to petty people or situations, because life is too short as it is. So think about all that extra time and energy you will have for something more positive and fun.”

Mike Hartley

Wish I could remember this more often.

Classic lines

I love automobiles, always have, always will. The sight or sound of a nice one can stop me in my tracks. I think I first realized it when I got my first V8, sat in it and grabbed that T handled Hurst 4 speed, fired it up with those Hooker headers and side pipes, and all of a sudden I was alive, I was one with the vehicle. I haven’t had that feeling in a very long time. Well with the exception of my best friend letting me drive his new Grand Sport Vette recently.

The designs and lines. The colors and shapes. The sweet sound and smells of a finely tuned system. The era they represent. They are magic to me. It’s hard to explain the feeling a great car can give and that one of the great enjoyments in life is to have your butt cheeks grab the car seat like a great white shark grabs a sea-lion. Your driving then. Not this crap sitting for hours in traffic, that’s torture. Something with 400+ horsepower and some open road, is what I need and long for.

I haven’t had a nice car since the 70’s but thinking about changing that while I still have the coordination to drive something powerful again because riding a bike again is out according to my better half. I did manage to squeeze in 30 years of 2 wheel driving. Well, sometimes one wheel if that mysterious twist in my wrist would happen.

Probably just a distant dream at this time, unless I suddenly become selfish, but getting a muscle car still on my bucket list if I get lucky. It also reminded me to add the Car Show in Ocean City to my list of events to photograph in Maryland this year. It gives me an excuse to get to the beach and that is a wonderful though when the temperature outside this morning was 1 degree and a minus 15 wind chill temp.

So like my favorite car commercial from Dodge shows. I still might have a few years before I get that Challenger.

So you have been warned, there will be more car pictures in the future but I will do my best suppress the urge to post every tire burning shot I might capture in OC.

Howard County after a snowy evening

Well, our first snow of substance. Note much really but it does change the look of the landscape. Anyway just sharing a few images from very early this morning just before and at sunrise along Centennial Lane and Columbia Town Center. The last time I was down by the lake was for a summer concert so this was a contrast.

These guys love my back yard. Of course if they are bringing this chill with them they can just vacate my property. But actually they are beautiful birds who have the camo working well this time of season. They are stealth hunters.

Baltimore waterfront

Baltimore near sunset. I love the views from the Harbor. I wish we could get all of Baltimore to look so good and be as safe as some areas are. As long as there is such a divide, the City can only succeed so far. It has come a long way for some. But as with most of our world, much remains to be done.

Quote of the Day – chains

“Sometimes when you look back fondly at history and realize the struggle it was to accomplish good things with limited tools, the pleasure comes from, the knowledge that was needed, the skill that was needed, the drive that was needed and the luck that was needed to make it happen . So while technology has changed and the chains have come off our tools, the rest has stayed the same.”

To warmer days

Can’t remember exactly but I believe I snapped these off the deck at Fager’s Island in Ocean City. I love watching the summer sunset from that vantage point. As I sit here with the chills from some bug that has latched onto me, thoughts of having this position this coming summer already makes me feel better. Cough cough.

Most of the time when shooting and someone walks into the scene you had framed it ruins it. But in this case the gentleman walking past and his smile and focus on the pictures of the same car I was shooting was a nice surprise…  Sometimes it’s good to be lucky.

Photo nostalgia 2

I had an earlier Photo nostalgia post with some old cameras and film items that some liked so I kept digging. And as I promised I found some more history (junk) sitting in my closet and boxes in my workroom that I can share. The first is a Polaroid Land Camera model 80. These were great because you didn’t have to wait for the processing part. It (the print) was right in your hands in 75 to 90 seconds if I remember right. Probably not.

I believe this was manufactured between the mid 50’s and early 60’s. It didn’t take that good a quality of pictures but then again it might have been the kids experience holding it that was the limitation. Yeah me. I might have to look a bit deeper and see if there is any old film for this. Wow, that might be fun if I did find some. Anyway its fun to look back at these tools of the trade.

I’m not sure of this monsters actual weight, but the term cinder-block came to mind. Oh, almost forgot the flash head that went with this clunker.

Next I found this relic sitting in an old shoe box. A General Electric exposure meter model 8DW58Y4.  Back in the day a light meter was a handy tool to have.

OK, so this next entry doesn’t have the decades of history but I believe I purchased it on 1996 or early 97. So it’s getting close to 20 years old. But the significance to me at least was that it was my first venture into digital photography in terms of image capture. I’d been digitizing images for at least a decade or two before that through scanners. It’s a Kodak DC 50 and at that time it was expensive as hell because digital was just starting to evolve.

The built-in flash sucked. Though the 3:1 zoom lens (38 mm to 114 mm-equivalent) was a nice feature. The software was a bit buggy but workable. Took a lot of images with this for a weekly newspaper at the time. Was allot cheaper than film and processing then. But that was about the extent of it. Image quality was poor. You had better have good lighting to begin with and a very steady hand because the shutter delay was significant. Which was learning a whole new timing in shooting. One day I’ll go get a batch of old images shot with it. They will be small because resolution on those were nothing and I didn’t keep a lot of the high res because “back in the day” storage was expensive also.

People now know the term mega pixels when it comes to the camera resolution on the phones. For instance the iPhone 6 has an 8 megapixel camera or my wife’s new Galaxy 5 16 mp camera. The Kodak DC 50 above was a stellar  0.38 megapixel. Capturing that with a 756×504 pixel color CCD sensor. That was one of my missed opportunities in life. Once I used that camera I knew that would be the future direction of photography and that film and prints we’re on their way out as the tool for the masses.

Holy crap, I think I uttered “back in the day” more than once in a post. I’ll have to watch myself. My apologies.
