The Center

I’m tired of both political extremes. I’m tired and hoping that we find more common ground to agree on, than disagree, and for very important issues. That is what the survival of this country depends on. I can remember a post a number of years ago where I thought we were headed to a civil war. I certainly hope and pray not, but as more people in the center feel compelled to retreat to the extreme of one side or the other, for fear of it swinging so far the other way they just can’t think about supporting it.

But the reality is we do agree on quiet a bit. And the center is much bigger than either extreme on either side and maybe larger than both extremes combined. No sane person is comfortable with the level of hostility present. And there is no shortage of people stocking the fire, all the way to the top so there is nobody but ourselves, who regulate what we do.

I’ve been worried for a while that some extreme end (either side) will escalate to serious violence because of perceived being politically wronged. We don’t debate anymore because it’s too dangerous. Even within families, people you love, good friends are avoiding talking calmly because they have lost the trust and hold the other side in such contempt.

I’m tired of the blame game both sides play. I’m tired of old guys in suits who won’t work together to come to the center and make good decisions. Decisions that demand compromise on both sides. And instead of leaders moving towards that center, we have become a win it all cost for one side or the other. Again the extremes are holding control over the center.

I’m trying to figure out how to wrestle control back from this death grip they seem to have established. I mean they aren’t hard to identify. Trouble is they are both formidable groups. They also circle the wagons politically now instead of people of character working hard behind the scenes to find and negotiate comprise. They are angry and loud and threatening each other, setting a horrible example for the rest of us.

They are us and only us can change this. We are in grave danger. People in the world have always wanted what we have. Freedom and prosperity. We are in grave danger of losing both unless we get our act together. I want to leave this world a better place for my children and their children but I’m finding I’m not as successful as I had hoped. But as long as there is another tomorrow, I’ll try to give it a shot. To find things that can tie us together instead of creating knots that take forever to untangle. At least I know a spot for some good rope.

Have a great day if you can.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.

  1. I really enjoyed your article. I also agree with you. Its hard to believe the folks in Washington no longer work together for the good of the country. Yes we are faced with hard issues, but with teamwork they can be solved. It does however require give and take on both sides. It seems neither party is willing to compromise so little gets done. Like you mentioned it is now difficult to talk among friends about such things because of all the ugly debate that goes on in DC. Hopefully some of the mess will ease when the DOJ and FBI issues are brought to light, individuals are held accountable or exonerated. It seems to much time and expense are wasted because things just drag on and on. Once again, great article
