All nighter

I’m in the final hours of my last all-nighter working for someone other than myself. I work, excuse me, worked an overnight shift for the last 10 years and this evening is the last one—no more night shifts in my future.

It might take me a little bit to reintegrate with you day walkers. I’ll have to get used to being amongst more people. No more missing Sunday night football or Monday night football or any games that landed Sunday through Wednesday nights with the boys.

No night driving, no food deserts, no shady characters about.

Night shifts are like outer offices, out of sight, out of mind. But that is okay now because all that stuff is in the rearview mirror.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I got to reconnect with my daughter this week. It feels wonderful.
  • The gift of real life is coming back to me.
  • When I clock out tonight that will be a relaxing breath.
  • Tonight gives the term “Home Stretch” a whole new meaning.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.

  1. Well said. I used to work at a bank processing passport applications. Great pay. Horrible hours. 10pm-6am. I literally felt like I was on the dark side of the moon. There was one funny aspect. I’m on the train going home every morning. Dark circles under my eyes, tired. Clothes wrinkled. Facing those freshly showered, perfumed, ready for the day. The looks I got. I think people assumed I was on an all night bender. The thing I hated the most. Sleeping during the day while the world was out living their lives. When I had a chance to switch to daylight I jumped on it.
