What makes a good neighbor? – Wow I can’t wait to read all the answers to this question from the daily writing prompt.
Let’s start with just being friendly. A wave and say hi when seeing a neighbor. And certainly, a smile helps.
Trust is a nice feature.
Helpful – From something as simple as helping with a heavy load or bringing in their mail while away. Sometimes it might be a bit more like helping each other clean up after storm damage or in a medical situation. Other times cutting their yard or help shovel a driveway if inclined. We are talking GOOD neighbors here.
Respects boundaries. Property is owned for a reason. Hey, it’s no big issue if mowing a foot or two from one week to the next. I always cut to wherever the neighbor has. This might seem like common sense but a lot of people lack F’ing common sense. Like a neighbor on one side who built a shed, put up a fence for his chickens, and a garden on my property forcing me to spend 4 digits on a survey to get them all off my property.
Respects laws. I’m not the enforcement type. I’m not against people having parties. If the street in front of my house fills with cars no big deal as long as I can get in and out and it’s not every weekend. Some music, no big deal.
Respect each other. This might be one of the tougher ones. With the political turmoil of recent years, it seems we are less tolerant of different views and beliefs. Believe me, it can be done though. We did it for decades before this mess and some of us continue to do it to this day.
Watchful is a very good one. I’m no citizen’s watch type but I keep my eyes and ears open. For instance, when my neighbor or I will be away from our homes for a bit we tell each other so if a moving truck pulls up we can notify the authorities.
Maintains property is a nice one. Keeping up general maintenance is good for everyone.
