AI thoughts

The daily prompt with a good question – What do you think is the future of AI?

There is a question I could probably fill a book with speculation about. A question that I hope for the best but fear for the worst.

An old term/saying comes to mind when thinking about AI at this point of time. I think it went – Don’t get too far out over your skis.

And that is where I think we are now. Getting ahead of ourselves in a relentless pursuit of the almighty dollar and to be first.

When it has the possibility of so much good and yet we seem to want to unleash an unknown beast untethered. Instead of doing something for humanity we are making our implements of war stronger.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s and thought I knew what turbulent times were. I’m afraid this technology might eventually cause even more turmoil than those decades.

In some ways maybe solutions provided could solve very troubling issues for our planet and society. Issues of health, food and water management, and others. But if the worst of human nature gets its hands on things which have been the case many times in our history, we could be in for monumental problems.

I do know I wouldn’t want the roar of a datacenter next to my neighborhood. I’ve been in these warehouses of machines. They are already going to take more energy to run than we have. As is common, the people are footing the extra bill in power along the way and may pay a lot more in the future for it. Unless AI comes up with a clean cheap technology for energy.

What scares me is I hope we aren’t looking at a repeat of end of 2007 and instead of a subprime mortgage failure we AI investment bubble burst.

But I’ll end on an optimistic note. I hope some really bright and ethical people get a hold of this technology and that it takes life on earth and improves it for us all and our planet.

I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
