Trail

Saw this young one strolling out of my back yard yesterday leading a pack of 6. They were all back sleeping in my lower back this morning in the snow and they are still there as I peer through the woods.

Wildlife, I love it. Photo by Mike Hartley

With the snow on the ground I’m seeing the trails they take through the neighborhood and lots of them cross through the woods behind us and between my neighbors yard and mine to cross the street or across my front yard.

I grew up with nice patch of woods behind my family home. For nearly the last 4 decades I’ve had woods behind our home. I love looking out into woods. But as most areas in this county every inch seems to be developed and some of the woods are now a few homes but there is still deep enough in the woods to hide them in the winter and summer and with the exception of one home and even that is a bit obscured in the winter.

Sometimes when I’m looking out back now it seem doesn’t seem like 60 years ago we would march into thick woods and make forts that lasted each season. A secret refuge. Nothing special, mostly constructed of woods, maybe an old piece of carpet or scraps of wood/materials from home. I remember going out to it in the middle of winter sometime to what we had built and used all summer.

Ah to be young and just look at something or a spot and start building. I guess I’m doing that still but in different ways and no more heavy lifting of fallen tree logs/branches. I’d rather not build walls anyway.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • You know I do battle with Mother Nature spring, summer and fall. But boy does she piss me off when I have to battle her in winter. Yes it’s pretty, unless your shoveling it.
  • Some say dressing in layers is important. I say staying inside is more important.
  • I just finished the longest vacation I’ve ever taken. I’ve been off for 3 weeks in a row. I kind of like it and the chance to make it permanent leaves me grinning.
  • Writing is easy when healthy.

I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
