On brand

What brands do you associate with?

I answered this question from the daily writing prompt last year in this post called Brands. It’s an extensive list.

I’ll update one thing. I switched back and the last new computer was a Dell.

Let’s add a few new items to the list.

I’m a domestic muscle car guy by heart. But I’ve had a great run of luck with Mazda cars and SUVs.

It’s my mission to not use Amazon or Walmart for any purchases. I didn’t like them decades ago and I don’t like them now.

I wouldn’t know, a fashion brand if it fell over my head with the label in front of my eyes.

If this poll were taken decades ago Kodak would have been an important brand to me.

I’m not interested in luxury brands. No problem with them, just not my style.

Ah, I left out my favorite sports brands in last year’s list – New York Yankees – Green Bay Packers – Maryland Basketball

Branded

What are your favorite brands and why? – I see the daily writing prompt is getting into market research. Well let’s have some fun.

Coca Cola “Coke or Cherry Coke – I love the taste of them. I just opened one. Never drank coffee.

Chevy – I love the design of the Camaro and Corvette. The performance isn’t bad either.

Frosted Flakes – why not, you only live once.

Maytag – the old ones lasted forever. I’m seeing how the new one’s fair now.

Dumser’s and Bruster’s Ice Cream – Because I’m addicted to REAL good ice cream.

John Deere – One reliable tractor.

Jiff – because everyone likes a good peanut butter sandwich once in a while.

Mazda – used to be a great buy because they were less expensive and very reliable. I love the Miata I own now. It’s a ton of fun. Zoom Zoom

Snickers, Butterfingers, Nestles Crunch – We all have our weaknesses.

In my professional days the IBM Servers and UNIX/AIX OS were my favorites.

Lays Chips – I’m good at resisting most chips but I can’t with these.

Canon printers – so far, a great experience with the Pro-100

Smithfield Bacon – Because it’s bacon – duhh. I have developed a taste for Oscar Meyer lately.

Nikon cameras – great glass, wish I could afford the higher end stuff.

Dole Pineapples – Rumor has it they are good for Pina Coladas.

Harley Davidson – The most beautiful motorcycle in the world. Wish I had owned one.

Ace Hardware – Good Service

Brands

What brands do you associate with? – Ah, the daily writing prompt is doing market research now. This could be fun though. I haven’t thought about brand association before but I certainly have some.

Being I’m sitting at a computer I’ll start with those tools.

  • Technology – used to be Dell for personal but switched to HP. Professionally IBM hardware and AIX, RedHat, Oracle, EMC, NetApp
  • Sound – Bose
  • Peanut Butter – Jiff
  • Cameras – Nikon Printers – Canon
  • Flying – not often but usually SouthWest.
  • Soda – I’ve always liked a nice cold Coke.
  • Transportation – I like Chevy’s from the 60s and early 70s. Mazda’s after that. Honda motorcycles. Always wanted a Harley but couldn’t afford one when it was time.
  • Ice Cream – Beryers
  • Yard – John Deere
  • Lodging – Marriott and Hilton – again not often.
  • Libation – I don’t drink often, but Plantation Rum XO is very nice.
  • Hardware – Ace – Lowes and Home Depot have given me enough bad experiences that I don’t go there unless Ace doesn’t carry it.
  • Education – the University of Maryland and the public school my daughters teach at.
  • Fast food chain – Jersey Mikes Subs – that’s about it for that category. I try to stay away from FF.
  • Security – Winchester and Louisville slugger. I’m going to add a Ring system soon though.
  • Bacon – Tie between Smithfield and Oscar Meyer
  • Shoes – Sketchers

Jeez, I didn’t realize all the brands I use. I could go on with others but that is a lot of personal info. If the above wasn’t enough already.

Brands I like

What are your favorite brands and why? – So inquires, the prying Daily Writing prompt.

I don’t get hung up on brand names. I like what I like. I don’t do brands because of status. I do them because they work or are quality. Like the top 2 brands (Apple and Microsoft). Do I like those companies, not especially, do I have an iPhone and Windows running on my computers, yes?

I looked at a list of top 100 brands, from Visual Capitalist at what I might not have thought of off the top of my head to round out my reply. And because I’m still half asleep.

Coke – the best soda ever made. I started with them and I’ll finish with them. I just finished my morning one.

Mazda – a lot of luck with their vehicles over several decades. Low cost of ownership and reliability. Chevy is a close second in the automotive category because I love the Camaro I had and my best friend’s car a Corvette.

Old Bay – I like that seasoning on my Maryland steamed crabs.

AT&T – That is the brand I went with for my phone service. Time will tell how it works out but so far so good.

IBM/EMC/Cisco – I loved working on their UNIX systems. Bulletproof hardware and I just clicked with the OS stuff. These experiences are from a decade ago and before so much has changed in this field.

Breyers Ice Cream – mmmmmmm, ice cream. Sorry, even the thought of it at 7 am makes me pause.

Nikon – It’s a love-hate relationship. I have one of their cameras and lenses and I love it. They make incredible equipment. I’d love to buy another system but they are out of my price range.

Canon – I like their printers.

John Deere – My lawn tractor is 26 years old and humming along nicely. Just basic maintenance and it cuts like the day I got it.

YouTube – entertaining – real life is always better than fiction.

Honda Motorcycles – My answer here would have been Harley Davidson but again when I purchased a large cruiser, the Honda was half the price of a Harley. And never being rich I went with the lower-cost bike. And I didn’t regret it at all. The 85 1100cc Honda Shadow was sweet and I enjoyed riding that bike for many years.

Opinion Section:

I’m not a fan of Walmart, Amazon, and other big-box organizations and what they have done. And at this point, it’s probably not reversible. They have killed so many local businesses and when these big chains decide to pull out it leaves a huge void in some areas.

I’ve never purchased an item in Walmart and only stepped foot in one once to follow my better half who wanted to get something. I’ve always tried to use my local hardware instead of the Home Depot and Lowes, both of which, I’ve had less than stellar experiences with.

I try to patronize local food instead of the chains but I do hit them once in a while.

Well, I’ve rambled on enough. Have a good day all.
