Good again

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? – Asks the daily prompt.

I answered this question 2 years ago in a post titled – Righting Failure – but I’ll add a new one to the list.

Midway through my professional career I decided to go out on my own, with two partners and form our own business. It didn’t work out for me, and I felt like I failed. I wasn’t really suited for role I was playing. Starting over again from 40 years old is scary but I landed a great job at The Washington Post and spent the rest of my career there.

Righting failure

The Daily Prompt asks “How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?”

When I was young, coming out of high school, the thought was to continue to pursue Applied Art and Design as it was called in the day. I failed early on in this dream in the first year of college for several reasons. Most of which was a lack of confidence in myself and what I could do. It would have been hard to accomplish but really, I gave up.

And while some might not call it a success yet, I’m pursuing that dream of my life now and now there is no give up. Just a body of work I’ll be leaving my family, friends, and the masses.

Another failure of my youth was my drinking. I started too young and worst of all continued punishing my mother with a problem that my father had. One of the biggest regrets in my life doing that to her. Thankfully with the help of my better half, I got it under control in my mid-20s and stopped for a few decades. I can now have one and walk away from it.
