Lots of things

What gives you direction in life? – Asks the daily prompt.

Family gives me a lot of direction, sometimes whether I like it or not. Work used to provide me with professional development direction but being retired I do that myself now and focus on things I like to work on.

Health directs me on what I can do each day. My deceased parents still provide me with the direction they worked hard on providing.

My friends certainly helped me with direction from time to time, again not always the best advice but it’s a lot of fun.

When I’m in the Miata I just head off in any direction that suits me and the car.

I believe in being a good person. I don’t always succeed but I try each day. I try to let common sense guide me.

And if you’re into cars the only direction you saw this Thursday thru Sunday was up and down Coastal Highway at the Cruisin Car show in Ocean City Maryland.

Directions

What gives you direction in life? – This answer to the daily writing prompt could take a book but I’ll limit the response.

I could say the Navigation system in my car but I rarely if ever have used it.

It must be some kind of deep-down gut feeling that helps me set my direction. They always seem like the ones to be making decisions on directions. Do I go after that new position at work? Do I ask her to marry me? Should we have a family? What car do we buy. Do we move?

I can think of a lot of different ways to answer that question. One could be my eyes. I have to see where I want to go. I have to see an opportunity to alter my path.

Some days when I have time to take a joy ride, the car provides the direction. It usually takes the twisty roads.

But the truth is many things. As if I thought one boss to give me direction might not be enough, I started a family. And they started families. Now I have lots of bosses. My 6-year-old granddaughter just told me a few weeks ago that this was her house. I must have missed the signing ceremony.

Family has always provided me with a healthy direction.

Friends have provided many other directions. Some crazy and fun ones indeed.

My professional life in newspapers gave me direction and taught me many important lessons along the way not just about work, but life.

Having made it to retirement, I find myself, for a change of pace, setting the direction. The arts give me direction now. I love trying to create.

Loving my own children was a great experience. Loving my grandchildren now is like this bonus gift that can direct lots of my activities. But they will grow fast as my own did and again I’ll be left with more time to redirect.

Life can be a lot like being at sea. You’re always adjusting your course every minute.

Direction

What gives you direction in life? – The Daily Writing prompt is on a roll with good questions.

I like questions that make me pause in thought for a bit.

Which Direction to choose today? Photo by Mike Hartley

Many things have given me direction in life. Some changed my direction entirely. Like getting married and having a family. That direction changes from the individual to the unit.

Some people might say their religious faith sets their direction in life. I’m not going there in the traditional sense. I have faith in good people. I have lost faith in the traditional institutions.

My will, desire, interest, and beliefs since I became an adult (debatable on when and if that happened), have been my roadmap.

But many have influenced my direction. My father passed when I was young so my mother set the direction early on. A good job setting a base she did. There were a few teachers in high school who gave some very wise direction.

I’ve had lots of directions in my professional life. Again I followed my path but as always listened intently to advice along the way. Some of it is very good and wise.

Of course, my better half has been a wealth of directions. My good friends have influenced my direction at different points in life.

Right now it’s simple. What sets my direction, is to enjoy my senior years, have fun, be happy, and love a lot. My creative interest determines a lot of my direction now.

Other things that have given me direction in life.

  • Tour guide in a swamp
  • Roadmaps, you know, the thing before Google Maps and Waze
  • street signs
  • doctors
  • police saying pull over
  • an Usher
  • a guy on the corner
  • a sign on a hiking trail
  • lifeguards yelling no cannonballs off the high dive
  • a Nun with a yardstick behind me standing like Babe Ruth saying no talking
