Noticed this same group meeting on the Bethany boardwalk each morning. A group of men that seemed to be of retirement age chewing the fat, getting a coffee together and enjoying life. I can envision myself here. But what I have an issue with is who will I be with. For all my life I’ve lived in one area. All my friends and family are in this area. Well a vast majority of them. But a lot of us are getting within years of retirement.
And our current homes are larger than our needs. It’s an expensive area to retire in. And I can see the possibility ahead that good friends and family members might be moving. Wow, there is a shock to the system. That could severely impact my quality of life. For I’ve been blessed with a large group of my family and friends that have remained within a short drive of each other for many decades now. Hell our whole lives for that sake.
Wow, not only was I previously very nervous about when I should actually retire from the job that pays the bills (hopefully within 5-10 years) but now a larger concern of where everyone might be going and when. And then if I should get bit by the beach bug and have to buy a house on stilts, how dramatically that would change my life.
So not only are we fighting with father time, we now are faced with life changing circumstances again. I know no matter the distance between people who are close, they will remain close but distance does change relationships. All I know is I hope to stay as close to family and friends physically as long as I can. Because that is more important than a sunrise on the beach with acquaintances.

You know the offspring will visit if you have a beach house!

I’ve seen that effect beach houses have on others children. Nice to factor that in.

Living in Bethany Beach, DE (or any of the seaside towns) may seem appealing now. The winters are long, cold and isolating. Decent health care is hard to come by for older folks since there aren’t that many Dr’s that can afford to set up shop in seasonal communities. People drive into Baltimore City for good medical care. Just a thought to keep you on track.
