I used to love going to the Laurel Meat Market. They had the meats as the Arbys commercial says. And they had been a staple for decades for family and friends.

Since they closed, we used Borman’s and the regular grocery stores. I think I’m going to visit J.W. Treuth Butcher in Oella this spring and pick up some meats for a few special weekends.

It’s been a long time since digging into the size steak below. Probably a healthy thing but I do miss that full feeling after powering down a good steak.

Today, I like a small filet instead of the huge porterhouse, strip, or ribeye. And not too often so it’s a real special treat now.

One of the best parts about being retired is that I no longer have to work holidays. Having just enjoyed one again with family and being able to go to sleep and not have to work all night allows me to appreciate them. This is great.

Sometimes prized possessions are the simplest things. I have a postcard from my father when I was 2 years old. He was in the Naval hospital recovering from TB and surgery. It’s one of my favorites because it’s addressed to me and in his writing and words. And he signed it, Lots of Love Dad. I guess I’ve been thinking about him more lately for some reason.

I’ve been missing him dearly for almost 6 decades now. Do you ever get over the loss of your parents? The answer for most is no. And that is good in some ways. It keeps them alive in your heart. It makes you think back about good times and hopefully transfers those to your children. They remind you to think even when they aren’t here. They kick you in the behind to think about being compassionate, considerate, and polite long after they are gone.

So if you still have parents, cherish the moments with them.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Heard some thunder early this morning. I wish it was an indication of warmer weather but that doesn’t appear to be the case today.
  • My screen time on that smart (dumb) phone was down again. Hell yeah.
  • The holiday feast my better half prepares is always special. It’s leftovers day.
  • Looks like I’ll have a great chance to do some foul-weather photography in the next few days.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
