I’m heading out today and letting the car take me to the spot I get out and photograph. I sense it will head west. Sometimes I like heading out without direction or an assignment in mind. To be truthful, most of the time I head out without direction or assignment.

While out I might try a series of low-angle shots or reflections or focus on certain colors, lines, or objects. Sometimes seasonal or architectural. I never head out with the intention of shooting (photographing) people but I’m enjoying it more lately.

Given what goes on in this country shooting means guns usually which is sad because even as a young photographer I heard professionals refer to things as shoots, did you get that shot or I’m heading out shooting for a few hours in town.

I only took two shots on the pier on a day at the ocean earlier this month, the other I used of two birds a few days back. I think I like this one better. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope to make the last quarter of the year something special. Not that it hasn’t been a great year so far. One of the best in my life. But in terms of finishing some projects and getting a great start on others.

I’ve got a head start reorganizing my workroom and purging things to create more floor space so I’m not moving something all the time.

I’m going to try to fight my normal instincts to hibernate this winter. Yes, this is your pre-warning that I will be complaining about the cold again. I can make it through fall but the negative waves will begin in December.

Holidays will be special not working them for the first time in ages. I know I’ve worked the last dozen Thanksgiving mornings where I got off at 6 or 7 am and would have to be up in a few hours to shower to start greeting family or head to a family member’s home.

Pretty much the same for Christmas and New Year’s holidays. A highly overlooked aspect of the job that wasn’t the only one that felt it. Lots of crews didn’t have the option of not being staffed 365 or 366 if it’s a leap year.

Let me get back to a few chores before I rinse off the ride. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I’ll try to share the day’s shooting later on.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I like cheese bread.
  • I realized I’ve been slacking on sharing random thoughts.
  • Popsicles are a good sweet treat that doesn’t put on a ton of calories.
  • I don’t know who misses it more. My dad not being able to see me growing up and old or me not seeing him.
  • If summer stretches into late September and October I have no problem with that.
  • The number of deer is getting out of control again. Or is it the number of people?

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
