The daily writing prompt is asking – What’s the most money you’ve ever spent on a meal? Was it worth it? I believe I answered that last year in a post called Food and Worth – so I’ll answer this question a bit differently this year.
It’s not the money you spend on the meal, it’s the quality of food and preparation, service, and enjoyment of the table. I’ve had some of the best meals at what some might say are middle of the road joints.
Catching a hot off the grill full rack of baby back ribs and a huge crabcake back in the early days of the Corner Stable was better than any meal I’d pay double or triple of that.
My friends and I enjoy grilling and some of the best steaks I’ve had have been from some local butchers. And we fix the entire meal and sides so it’s not that expensive. If we were to go to a steakhouse it would have been 2-3x from what we spent on the meat and meal.
It can be a simple pizza with great friends that makes it as good as any multi-star restaurant. I’ve had some of the best breakfasts ever, in a greasy spoon in an old mill town.
I’ve had great tacos from a food truck and eating them in a park with a friend on a warm summer day during lunch break.
All these were worth it. As much and more so, than any most costly meal I’ve ever had.
