Not my job

Self-checkouts irritate me – I don’t use them. And when I’m forced to they always seem to have issues. They seem to be taking more of the lanes to where I might have to adapt.

I will resist this as long as possible. You raise prices and expect me to do your job so you can be more profitable. And then someone wants to stop you and check a receipt, screw that. If you don’t trust me to do the job, get someone to do it.

The jobs and people interaction if you hire the right ones will keep bringing people to your stores. The jobs provided for young and old people and give them the opportunity to build on something for the future or make their senior years livable.

Mr. Yates behind his counter in his old general store on Main Street. I think I shot this in the mid-70s when I worked 2 doors up and would come over on break and get a couple of 5 cent popsicles on hot summer nights. No we didn’t have AC at that job. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll always go to a person at checkout if I can. I like saying “thank you, have a nice day” when they finished ringing me out. The alternative is flipping a discreet bird to a machine.

I never liked shopping in the first place and this change doesn’t improve it for me so far.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.

  1. Self-checkout wastes more of my time

  2. When we visited N. Ireland I was shocked to discover that check out clerks get seats there. Imagine how many folks would be able to do those jobs if they didn’t have to stand for an entire shift?
