My Partner

Who do you spend the most time with? – A softball question from the Daily Writing prompt.

The answer is my better half of course. My one and only, life partner. Such an obvious answer to me now that we are enjoying retirement together. BUT!

As I thought about the actual amount of time, I quickly reminded myself of the many hours I used to put in at work each week. And the years we worked opposite shifts to raise our family without outside childcare. And even after the children were grown we both had full-time plus jobs.

Then there are the times with friends and the separate times with the kids being they both had activities and sports to practice and play.

And those thoughts scared the hell out of me because I realized we spent a lot of our waking hours apart for a lot of years. And I mean a lot of DECADES. Maybe that is why the time together seems so sweet now.

Was it difficult being apart so much, yes. Were our lives out of balance, sure was. Could we have made better use of the few free minutes we had, sure we could have but that is water under the bridge. But it’s a good message for those of you trying to balance careers, families, and keeping the bills paid. Make good use of the time you have to love as much as possible.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
