In 2-4 weeks, the kids will return to schools. Most summer vacations are in the books and resort towns slow considerably after Labor Day. It’s my favorite time of the year to hit the beaches. September and October are wonderful. It’s also very different. We always miss the children and grandchildren when we go after our summer vacation week together.
Everything is still open, but the crowds are gone. Which in some way is part of the fun of the summer vacation at the shore. Some avoid the summer season all together because it is so crowded. Not to mention the expense of the prime season rates. I like the heat, so the summer temps don’t bother me like some.
I like seeing families. And that is what you see in season. In the offseason it’s an older crowd. The shores of Maryland have been making a big push to extend the seasons starting them earlier and trying to end them later. I plan on taking a solo trip this month and then we will probably take a few days in September and October. So, my summer is going to be longer as I like them.
It’s another benefit of retirement. I used to sit in the office chairs looking out at late August and September sun wishing I had the freedom to get back to the shore. To remember and relish the good times with family the month before but also relax as only you can when you’re without children and grandchildren.
The offseason is my favorite time to visit, if I’m being selfish. If I’m being true to myself, the moments, hugs, kisses, hand holding, and laughter with my entire family is the best.
