Cry

What’s the last movie that made you cry? – Asks the daily writing prompt.

This answer might seem strange. The movie isn’t a tearjerker. And men don’t cry. Well, I did.

I have trouble watching movies about war now. I guess the last one was Midway which was on recently. They remind me of my father who came back from WWII and Korea but died a young man from the traumas of war.

I didn’t deal with my father’s passing well. I cry more now than I did when I was 9 when it happened. I think I just pushed a lot of those feelings way down for decades and never dealt with them.

It’s funny the other day I was watching some YouTube clips and ran across a movie called Greyhound. It’s about a Destroyer escort in WWII in the Atlantic. My father was on a destroyer in WWII in the Pacific. I watched a couple of YouTube clips of it and started to choke up. It looks like a great movie that I would enjoy but I know it would be upsetting.

One of the great disappointments in my life is that I just didn’t get a chance to know my father. He was a shell of a man he was from surgeries and service experiences according to my mom. We never talked about his service. Why would he share that with someone so young anyway.

All I have is pictures and some letters from his days in the service.

A man holding a framed black and white photograph of another man wearing sunglasses and a coat, with a ship in the background, set against a wall decorated with flowers and a framed picture.
Dad and I. Self-portrait I took of us 15 years ago. I didn’t intend on using this shot at all, but this post seemed a good time.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
