Writing

When it comes to writing in my blog I’ve done a fair amount. I’m in my 12th year and have no intention of slowing down. WordPress tells me I’ve already used 1,459,000 words in the years of blogging with them. That sounds like way too many.

I see the average word count for a book is between 70-120K. Jeez, I’ve written several books, it appears by the numbers I rang up in WP. I didn’t start the blog, to write. It was going to be a photography blog. It still is but the opportunity to ramble on was irresistible. It would probably be more popular if I just stuck to photos.

Of course, writing isn’t about total number of words. It’s how those words and thoughts are crafted and put together. Sometimes few words are the best words. In some ways writing is like photography. I’m capturing something that might send a message or evoke a feeling or communicate or connect to another individual.

Improving the content means I have to improve my writing. There are so many eloquent blogs I follow and see that are so well written. It’s intimidating and inspiring at the same time.

And for me it does come down to time. I got a late start on my creative interest and still struggle to make the time I’d like to devote to it. I’m doing it though, increasing my practice and knowledge all the time.

I’m starting a few books and while that may be way premature, when you’re in your senior years the time for thinking about doing something has well past, and the time to do it is now.

I know I’m not a writer yet. Might never turn into a good one but that won’t stop me.

Things I’ve learned so far in my writing journey.

  • I write best late at night and early in the mornings.
  • My photos inspire my post ideas.
  • My random thoughts from day to day are fun to come up with.
  • Writing so far these years has always been fun.
  • I wish I had an editor and proofreader.
  • Sometimes I do feel I should spend more time on other artistic interests and less on writing.
  • Writing at times is therapeutic.
  • There is a ton of stuff in life, I don’t write.
  • I think maybe my grandkids in the future, might read about their Papa and pick up an important tip here and there.

With a lifetime and a half in the Newspaper industry I'm preparing for my retirement career as an Artist, Writer, Photographer and Video content provider. I'm a proud father of two wonderful children and I'm still married to the first girl I fell in love with and probably only one that would have me.
