Pets and Love

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be? – Asks the daily writing prompt.

The one thing would be that they are loved. And yes, I believe I’ve made all my pets understand that. And I’m glad that skill and ability is in my children also.

This girl was our most recent love and yes, she did love us. She was so affectionate and playful and even though she was our son’s dog, we treated her as our own. She passed recently so our hearts are still heavy.

Missing a pet

What is good about having a pet, the daily writing prompt asks.

It’s nice to have another living thing to share love with. The laughter they provide. The calm they give. The listening ear they lend. The safety some provide. The wonderful company they are. And many more things.

I miss having a pet, but the losses over the years from family pets were just too great for my better half to bare again so we don’t have one currently. I understand that and accept it.

You got to love them

This little girl was with us for 8 days. We watched her for our son while his family was away visiting his wife’s mother and grandmother out of state.

She is a joy and a pain. Her sister was just a joy and ease. She’s a very active dog and wants constant attention and love. At least she saw this as an opportunity for that. Maybe she’s smarter than I give her credit for.

She’s a loving pet and loves us and our house. More room to run and play, lots of wildlife to watch and bark at. Long walks with my better half, full roam of the house and the occasional treat. Well maybe more than occasional.

I love dogs but I don’t believe I’ll ever own one. I get to love both of my best friend’s dogs, and my son’s dog.

And now that she hasn’t been here for 2 days, I miss her and almost find myself looking for her to come down and nudge my hand away from the keyboard.

Pets are a wonderful thing. So much love in animals. I don’t understand how people can mistreat them. That reminds me I need to visit the local cat and dog rescue and make a donation. Don’t worry, I know there are people in need and donated to the Maryland Food Bank today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • If you don’t participate, you’re advocating your freedom.
  • Yesterday was a good walking day. Now, if I can follow up with another one.
  • Searching for the truth takes time and effort.
  • I’m getting better in dealing with cold, but wind makes me mad.
  • It’s getting hard to move around my office again. Time for the purge.

Part of our hearts

I’m shedding a few tears while typing this post because my son’s first pet passed away today. The joy that dog gave both my daughter in-law and my son is beyond compare. It pains us both to see them in such despair.

We loved her and it hurts very badly right now.

We would always watch her when they take vacations, and she would always visit when they came. She was so sweet and loving. She brought me a lot of joy and love. As soon as she came in our house, she would use her nose to guide me to the kitchen and stand in front of the freezer till I got the ice cream out.

I loved how adapt she was at opening presents. Gently tearing the wrapping paper away.

She was a rescue, and she certainly rescued our families’ hearts.

We got to say goodbye to her this morning, and the hurt will be with us for a while. That’s the way it is when you lose a love.

I’ve got to finish a carving for them soon. And I’m going to put together a photo book for them and all the shots I have of her over the years.

Hard choice

Dogs or cats? – Now there is a simple question from the daily writing prompt that could incite some real debate.

I love them both but probably cats. Only because dogs need a lot more time and attention. Not that I didn’t lavish both on cats, but dogs are on another level. Of course there are great rewards with that extra time.

The companionship dogs have with people is something special. I’ve seen it over and over. They are so entuned to their humans it’s unique.

But the balance cats have had with me that seems to work best. They are very loving animals but also like their time like I like my time. Example-when we watch our sons dogs, I feel guilty if I leave them home for 30 minutes to go out for an errand. Don’t feel that with a cat, unless I’m going on vacation.

My first pet was special because it was the last gift from our Dad. And 60 years later after this picture I still get the same joy from pets. It’s been a great treat in life to have pets. Photo by Mom

What animals make the best/worst pets? – I’ll be interested in the responses to this question from the daily writing prompt.

The best pet for me is a cat. The worst has been a guinea pig that the kids had for a bit. Dogs are great pets also but far more work.

I wish animals weren’t treated so poorly in some cases. If you get a pet take it seriously. Adopt instead of breeders. Support your local shelters.

The local shelter I hope to start helping at is called Small Miracles.

Connections

Pets are here for such a short time. When they are here, they are ever present. Well, most pets are. That in part makes them part of our physical presence. Mentally sometimes the connection is stronger, even than with some people you know.

Some of my pets have been my therapist. They are companions extraordinaire. Their love flows through their eyes and every part of their bodies from nose to tail. In some cases, they are a reflection of us. My friends all have dogs and my son has two dogs that I love.

One of them is nearing the end and it has brought many a tear to my eye recently. We watched them today for a few hours while my son and family were out. She has been so loving to me and my better half over the years, she is part of our family also. I was so glad to have that time with her today. I think we looked at each other more intently today than we have in a while. I sensed comfort in her eyes and I hope I made her feel that way.

So, we are appreciating her as much as we can now. And spoiling her with love, attention and some treats. Not that she hasn’t been spoiled before this. At the same time, I’m also hurting for my son and his family knowing how much they love her. They rescued her together and now their young son has been in love with her for a few years now so there will be much sadness.

We must concentrate on all the joy and love she has shared with us. For she has made our family very happy over the years. And lover her as much as we can now.

Love of pets

What is good about having a pet? – I bet this question from the Daily Writing prompt gets a ton of replies.

Almost EVERYTHING is the answer – Pets are comforting and fun. Loving and playful wakes with you or wakes you each day. It’s that bond that develops very quickly and just builds and builds. I could use so many positive terms to describe the joy they bring to people and ramble on for paragraphs, if you haven’t experienced it, you need to before you leave this earth. It’s a very rewarding experience.

And then one day way too soon that love parishes. And the heartbreak of losing a family member cuts at our hearts.

I was watching College Gameday yesterday and viewed this tribute to Ben Herbstreit the dog of Kirk who became a celebrity on the road with him. Kirk, one of the most accomplished announcers couldn’t speak before they did a tribute to his partner, choked up with so much emotion. That is what it’s like to lose a pet.

We’re familiar with that pain having had pets all our lives. But we are also filled with the joy, love, and fun they provided for many decades.

Pets

What animals make the best/worst pets? – The Daily Writing prompt in my opinion asks the wrong question today. There are few bad pets. There are bad combinations of pet owners and pets.

Also, let’s look at the definition of a pet. A caged lion or bear or other wild creature is not a pet. It’s a caged beast.

What is the best match for a pet owner and pet? If you only have time to sprinkle some fish food in a tank before you run out the door and adjust the water, getting a dog that needs a ton of interaction could make for the worst pet if you didn’t think before you got that combination.

Maybe bringing home the pet python to a home with small pets and children might not be the best idea. Just like getting 3 kittens with a home of pristine trinkets, expensive carpets, and fine draperies.

My personal favorite is cats. We are alike, sometimes I need my space and sometimes they need theirs. I don’t have to walk them on cold, rainy, nights. Not that I don’t love dogs, I do, all my best friends have them and my son has two. No problem, with dogs as long as they aren’t mine. They need too much love and I’d feel guilty if I wasn’t loving them almost every waking hour.

When my son’s dogs are here for a few days, they are the least productive times of the year. We give the dogs attention all day, they sleep with my wife, and I’d have to stand to have a space. So I get kicked out of my bed.

We have fallen in love with the pets we have had. Several years ago our last one passed and the experiences of that and the ones before have gotten too painful for my better half to get another one.

Worst pet – We had a Guinea Pig once. That was my worst pet experience. Once the kids got wind of the pellets it ate coming out and stinking up the basement their affection lessoned.

Best pet – The 4 cats I’ve had in my life. And any combination where the love is mutual.
