Line up

Yeah, I park with these guys and gals. Just a shot from the Maryland Miata Club meeting this past Monday in Columbia. I’m enjoying both the chances to meet people and shoot their cars. And start learning more about my own and what I might do in the future with it.

A row of reds. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve only been to 3-4 monthly meetings but they also do rides and track events, scenic cruises, talk cars, swap and buy parts, give advice and support, and just have fun and be friendly.

Take a deep breath, Sir. Photo by Mike Hartley

I might just go to one of the track events just to shoot photos of the group. I took enough chances in my younger days. I don’t push things anymore.

I’d guess there were over 50 cars at the July meeting. It was a beautiful day

I’ll be putting a few miles on my own this weekend but the cover is going on it soon because the rains are on the way.

Parking it

Nice lines. Interesting parking spot shapes.

It’s good to be back and it was also nice to take a break. One of my best friends invited us to their bay home for the weekend. We were only able to do one day but it was a very good one. A wonderful early breakfast and lazy morning on the porch before a bike ride. The bay was a bit rough for kayaking.

A shower and off to dinner at The Narrows Restaurant a short drive from our spot on Kent Island. Wow, a great dinner with best friends and our better halves. We ate so well and returned for a muted sunset but a fairly good light show of lightning.

Unfortunately, we ran into that mess about 10 miles from home and crawled the rest of the way. I thought about stopping several times during that span but thankfully there was only another car or two on the road so I just felt my way at a snail’s pace.

Only 8 hours left in the wonderful month of June. It’s been a great one and I’ll remember the many special days with my children and grandchildren. And the closeness I continue to feel to my partner.

I hope this July is filled with highs. There is always one tough day this month remembering a close loss. But many good days are already planned. But first, make the best use of the last of June.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • New production method. Only emergency stopping.
  • I feel like I look healthier with a nice tan.
  • Mirror check, haircut needed.
  • Time to warm up the printer. I gave it a rest yesterday.

The grandchildren are about to arrive at this homestead so no more posts till later today. It’s such a beautiful day I’m guessing we are going to be outside a good bit.

Backing into Monday

Yeah, instead of firing out, I’m backing into Monday. I might wash the car, cook some bacon, do a little carving or photography. I see a long nap in the afternoon in the hammock being I’ve been unable to sleep much this morning. I think I woke up at 1 am. Good thing I’m retired.

From Mikey and Mel’s cruisin meet this past Saturday. Photo by Mike Hartley

At the same time, I feel pumped and excited about creating something today. Maybe it’s just the musical inspiration I’m getting because I put the headphones on and the hard-driving rock & roll has my body moving in the chair.

Most of you are off again driving and diving into the new workweek. I’m doing the same but for myself instead of someone else. I love my schedule and commute, I can mix pleasure and progress at the same time, weaving in and out of each other.

I think this is the last week of work for my brother-in-law who is a few years older than me and finally retiring. I’m looking forward to some walks and exercise with him.

It’s so nice to unwind after a busy weekend and not have to think about someone else’s business. And given the level of chaos at my former employer (The Washington Post) I’m so glad I’m on the outside looking in.

That reminds me, I have to work on the career wall. The last piece came last month. The Post gave me a framed picture of the front page on the day I started. That along with other mementos and photos and the things from my first career with the local Times papers will make up a corner of my basement soon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Bon Scott could really belt out a tune.
  • A brief reprieve from the high heat today. I think I’ll spend it outside.
  • An early start to the day always feels good.
  • If you can be satisfied even on the toughest days, life is good.

When feeling blue feels good

I’ve been looking hard at other paint jobs and discovering what I’d like. Not that one is imminent but when it’s time I’ll know. And what better place than car meets? And it allows me to practice some photography along the way.

I probably still won’t go blue but this is a very nice shade with some great detailing above.

Engines keep the world running. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not sure which holds my interest more now. Cars or cameras. If I’m not driving them I seem to be shooting them. And learning more about both is a lot of fun. I hope to pick up some feedback on suspension changes when the time comes to replace the stock ones at the coming Miata meet-up a week from tomorrow.

The more I shoot the more I seem to enjoy life. I doing more experimenting with different settings than I have in a while. And that effort will continue today and into this evening. I’d like to get outside this night to work on some timed shots.

But first, the yard needs cutting. So out I go before the real heat of the day cranks up. Stay cool, stay safe. Well if I followed that advice, I wouldn’t have any fun now, would I?

Active

How do you practice self-care? – Another rather personal question from the Daily Writing prompt.

Good old Google to the rescue – the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

I had to look it up because I have so little practice with it.

Before I get to what I do now, my history might be a list of the things you might now want to do if you’re interested in self-care. I’ve had old acquaintances see me and the first thing they say was “Wow, you’re still alive.” I lived a little hard for parts of my life.

I’ve never been a daily workout guy, but overworked at the job. My diet hasn’t been horrible but it probably falls on the unhealthy side for most of my life. I’ve taken too many risks sometimes in the thought of self-care.

Now I just try to eat smart and exercise a bit. I do things that make me happy and feel good. I stay active in both actions and thoughts. Unless I’m in the hammock.

A Pearl of Detroit

Casting a big shadow this morning at Mikey and Mel’s car show was this long white beauty.

I wouldn’t want to have to wash and detail this Caddy. Photo by Mike Hartley

I went early as did several people to beat the heat but that was a wish that didn’t come through because if you were in the sun at 8 am it was already getting hot. By 9:30 am when I left it was sweltering already.

Probably would have stayed a while longer but had another outside event to attend. I was one of the few convertibles out that I saw with the top down. I’ve mentioned before that I like summer.

I even spent some time in the hammock outside this afternoon. Yes, it was in the shade. I must have passed out because my better half woke me for dinner.

I hope you all either stayed cool or had more temperate weather. Now I’m just waiting for a late-night ride on a warm summer night.

Thursday Motion

Nothing like some sunshine and some inspiration hard driving rock and roll to start the day. And being my health is returning I’m more than fired up to make some fine use of this wonderful Thursday.

The shower is done and an overdue haircut has been had. I pulled the hammock out for a spot to relax later this afternoon. This afternoon was a top-down back road, slow-pace day through Howard County.

Few probably love driving as much as I do. Well, that’s pretty pompous. I’ll rephase I love to drive as many do just for the sake of it. Then there are the few that still love and cherish a manual transmission. I’ve driven one for most of my life and that a good long time. I always will and that means even if they are no longer made in new cars, I’ll buy a used one and fix it up.

An actual organization. Time to shine the go-cart and go through some gears today. Hell YEAH. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The WHO – where bass, drums, guitar, and vocals play lead, all at the same time. Ain’t it great!
  • A busy June ahead. Not a bad thing at all.
  • Paid my respects to my father and mother in-law today.
  • There are too many people behind the wheel that shouldn’t be.

Sunday on the Boards

I like it now that I start Sundays with a smile instead of the trepidation of another workweek. Not that I won’t be busy and have a lot of work planned/scheduled and probably some my better half hasn’t told me about yet. It’s just I’m more comfortable about who I answer to now.

The Daily Writing prompt sucked so here is the one I’m using today.

Love of Motorized Transportation

Today is also the last day of the Cruisin Ocean City event. I love vehicles, cars, and motorcycles but also some trucks. I guess I didn’t pass that gene or love to my kids. Cars are transportation to them.

To me, they are so much more. They are marvelous works of style, sound, and speed. Cars and motorcycles have represented a ton of fun in my life. I love the sensation of driving.

I’ve never owned anything outrageous, a classic, or extremely fast. But I have enjoyed them nonetheless. I enjoy a stick shift and have had one just about all of the 5 decades I’ve been driving.

I don’t know who is happier in this car. Photo by Mike Hartley

My better half humors me by wandering some of the shows with me. I usually go to the local ones alone. But I doubt the kids would have any interest in them.

I love personalizing them. I’ll be starting work on my Miata soon. Who knows, maybe that will be the car one of my grandchildren learn to drive in the future. I did teach both my children to drive a stick though. My guess is they won’t ever buy one though.

Dreaming of being behind the wheel. Photo by Mike Hartley

Speaking of cars, let me go pull the cover off mine so I can go for a spin early tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Whoever said Sunday was a day of rest, forgot to clue me in a long time ago.
  • Actions have consequences. So do inactions.
  • Think I’ll watch a ballgame this evening.
  • Life is easier when people tell you where they stand.

Postponed

The trip I was thinking about to Ocean City this Thursday for the car show is off. I’m not going that distance in crappy weather. I’ll hit the fall show in October.

Thankfully I was able to get my car junkie fix last night at the monthly Maryland Miata Club meeting on a beautiful Monday evening in Columbia.

A pretty informal event but fun nonetheless. A nice group of enthusiasts who like these go-carts and modify them nicely or restore them to vintage originality. I’m a newbie to the group, only my second meet but I ran into some nice people and had good looks at their rides.

I haven’t been on any of the (spirited drives) yet through the back roads with small groups. And then there are the track cars and drivers who look fairly serious but seem to have the biggest smiles.

The monthly meeting is only about 20 minutes away so it’s a piece of cake to attend from now on that I hope to make another priority in my life. It will also give me some incentive to start fixing up my stock ride a bit.

I was able to help out a fellow owner who had an electrical problem and found out he lived just down the road from me so maybe a cruising partner in the future. I think I’m going to start mapping out some of my favorite routes around the state for others to enjoy.

Unfortunately, it’s time to throw the cover on it being the rains are coming again.

Shortbed, Longboard

Anytime I get off to a good Monday start life is pretty good. I had a lot of fun with friends last night, and a great time with my better half during the day. I even squeezed in a nap, because I burned the candle a bit, on both ends over the weekend.

Surf’s not up today, nor the sun. Photo by Mike Hartley

We’re continuing the strong start this Tuesday, despite the morning fog and rain. A quick meeting and then a meal at one of our favorites on Reisterstown Road – Lenny’s Delicatessen – We always go there after a meeting we have up that way periodically. I love their Rueben.

The morning was very fruitful. A lesson I was reminded of today is, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Another good day of exercise and hopefully some shooting this afternoon and evening for new images to edit. So off I go again.

Reminder that Cruisin’ Ocean City is May 16-19, lets hope the weather is nice.

Flaming Finish

I just realized we finished the month of April. I feel good and disappointed at the same time. I was less balanced that month. Things are either going right or wrong.

Great smile. Photo by Mike Hartley

April had far more productive days than not. However, I’m still way behind where I thought I could be after the first 4 months of the year in many aspects of life. I can’t fix the past, so changes going forward. And today looks like a good day to start.

Attempt 3 blog posts a day for May. I pulled that off in April a few times but not consistently. Improve and organize content better for each post.

My physical workouts in April improved, but I need to increase reps and steps this month.

I took a step back in dealing with troubles in April and didn’t bounce back from them like I know I can.

I picked up my shooting but need to get the cameras out every day, without fail if I’m to improve. And get that pastel and charcoal in my hand each day and create.

Time to get out of this chair and into another one. Have a good morning all.

Morning observations

  • The first order of business is to flip the calendars.
  • Glad I put the cover on the car because it rained well last night.
  • The first Coke of the day always tastes best.
  • I like rising early, around 4 am.
  • I have a good portion of the day to make of it what I can. Will I choose chores or fun?
  • May is an emotional month for me.

So far a beautiful day here in the Mid-Atlantic state of Maryland. I hope to spend some time outside before the temps drop for the next few days.

Things are starting to bloom and it’s that colorful time of year coming to life again. I can even feel myself coming alive again. So time to stand up and walk away from the computer and watch life bloom in real-time.

Bling before Bling

I think Bling happened decades before the phrase was coined. I’ve never adapted to bling. I don’t wear rings or watches or chains or piercings. Then again, if I ever purchase one or customize my ride, that might qualify as some bling.

I guess I was just in car mode yesterday. It must have been the photo I shot of this Camaro below. After spraying the Miata off and going for a ride with the top down, there were so many nice cars and motorcycles out that there were too many to describe.

One nice paint job on a beautiful ride. I look at others and try to pick the perfect color for me if I go for new paint. Photo by Mike Hartley

Maybe it will clear up later today for another short ride but that drizzle this morning isn’t inviting so far. And next week has a chill coming so I guess I’ll have to wait a bit longer before converting from sweatsuits to shorts.

Just the right amount of chrome. Photo by Mike Hartley

The local car shows are kicking off again this month so more opportunities to see impressive works of art and speed coming together. I’m going to miss the local one at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn next week but I’ll be at the rest of them this year. And I hope to hit both the spring and fall meet at Ocean City.

Unfortunately owning motor vehicles means interfacing with the DMV. And today I have to return tags from an old Chevy. I have to admit, DMV has improved over the years. And the places that offer DMV services for a fee I’m sure have taken some pressure off the state.

I’ve had several poor experiences with DMV myself. Things like their computer error made my perfectly legal tags illegal, causing me to get stopped and denied being able to take my car home. Even though all I did was wait for the officer to leave. But then I had to go to DMV to prove to them I had valid tags even though the lady at the counter insisted they had been turned in. I had to walk her to the friggin car because she didn’t believe the registration I had in my hand and that the tags were on my car and valid. Almost got arrested that day.

Hopefully, today’s transaction will be no fuss, no muss. Or is today’s term “no yada yada?”

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A productive morning already, anytime you make plans with your better half it’s a good start.
  • Time to kick it up a notch and challenge me, myself, and I more.
  • I wonder if I get more of my motivation from negative or positive experiences.
  • I’ve got to fit in a long walk today.
  • Taking the cameras with you is important. Taking them out of the bag is more important.
  • I have an equal number of tripods as cameras – 4.

Shop till you drop, the clutch

The Daily Writing prompt asks – Where would you go on a shopping spree?

I’d enjoy shopping for cars and motorcycles. Therefore my destinations for shopping would be a custom car show and a custom motorcycle show. Sometimes when I get the time to hit a local show or a regional like in Ocean City for the car or bike week, it’s like a kid in a candy store.

Never really owned a custom vehicle. Could have, but focused the resources on more important things like the family. No regret there but that hasn’t dampened the spirit to have one.

A while back I saw a group converting a Miata with an LS3 and all the needed body/frame modifications/powertrain/suspension needed. That and a custom paint job are still within reach before I probably have to hang up the keys but if that never happens that is fine also.

Boy would I have trouble resisting a for sale sign on a pro-charged 427 SS.

Sweet Streak

I’ve been on a sugar rush the last few days and it’s time to put a halt to that. There are a few candies I have no resistance to and one of them is Jelly Beans. The other is Smarties. And low and behold there was a bag of each in the house.

Now on the Jelly Beans when I say a bag I mean like a 1/3 of a bag. Because that is all there is when it’s unopened if you hold it by the end. Don’t get me wrong, they were fresh and great as usual from Brachs but come on. Stop skimping on the BEANS. Give’m up guys.

Keep on Truckin’ people. Photo by Mike Hartley

Trucking along with activities and chores. Took a few minutes to snap some early flower photos. I’m prepping the Chevy for sale and got the interior completed. I’ll finish the exterior on Sunday. Got one offer on it today but will look for a stronger one.

Now if that old Chevy I had looked like the one above you would never catch me selling it.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Making something from nothing today. And seeing it take shape is a good feeling.
  • I will not let this month slip by. I’d like to finish at least 2 new chapters.
  • It’s ok to ask for help. So I’ve heard.
  • I sense some power working ahead. Or is that power washing?
  • March Madness is upon us. I think I’ll use it as a springboard to start playing a bit each day myself.

Hard

It’s hard to keep your head above water sometimes. I feel like I’m drowning from time to time. But wisdom has taught me survival techniques. Making use of one of them right now. Music is changing my spirit as I type. Listening to an old tune from the Doobie Brothers “Dangerous” and its an upbeat one that reminds me of motorcycle riding days. Followed that with “The Doctor” which is another upbeat song to smile to.

Maybe that’s my problem. I’ve been looking above the surface. Photo by Mike Hartley

I don’t have much energy left in the day. The granddaughter can burn through my reserves without missing a beat. But she is back with her mother tonight and my body is sending me urgent messages to get horizontal soon.

But my mind feels like there is unfinished business and ideas to work on. I did some shooting this afternoon I should download and edit, I haven’t worked on my books yet today. I owe a couple people emails.

Well let me flip a coin and see if we work or rest. There is it, we WORK. Gentlemen, start your engines.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When you are inspired, accomplishments are the byproduct.

  • I have some leftover business cards from the job that once paid the bills. I think I’ll make personal ones on the other side to hand out when needed. Little pieces of artwork.

Go Green

Know what you want and go for it. Yesterday I took a small pleasure cruise to get gas. Way too cold for the top down but a nice sunny day none the less.

Cool. Photo by Mike Hartley

Today I’m going for a longer cruise. Because I need to get out and do some photography. And of course enjoy some back roads.

We are in the home stretch now for winter coming to a close. I know, it’s too early to celebrate but by the end of this month the sun will be up earlier and it will be staying light later and the sun will begin to warm in the afternoons.

No I’m not putting the snow shovels away just yet but I’m anticipating that warmth that draws me outside again. And down to the beach for the car weekends in May and October.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Heading out with the camera feels good.
  • Life is about how many smiles you can have. Fake ones don’t count.
  • Lots of goals, little time.
  • My tailbone still hurts from that fall.
  • Life – having a good time despite those working against it.

Mellow Yellow Monday

A very productive day in some ways. In others not so much. Like doing some new shooting. That just wasn’t in the cards today.

My daughters favorite color. Photo by Mike Hartley

But making some final prints on my ocean series took off again. Another edit and I’ll decide what I’m going to frame.

Tomorrow will be a challenge with some nasty weather on the way. But also an opportunity to get some shots to fill out that section of my portfolio.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • 1 night good of sleep doesn’t make up for the previous 6 nights of poor sleep.
  • The true danger is in multiple realities trying to co-exist.
  • If you’re working to work, that doesn’t get you far. If you’re working to learn and get better all the time you will get far.
  • Had someone in a very big hurry tailgating me down the road today. I was going 10 over the speed limit in the slow lane but apparently, that wasn’t acceptable. We came to a light and I thought about introducing myself but instead left them in a cloud of smoke. I think they got the message because I didn’t see anything behind me after that. I call that non-verbal communication.

Surfs not up

But it doesn’t matter. I am and hopefully, it’s a great day ahead. Warmer temps are on the way and sunshine. The surf forecast isn’t that good till next Monday at our shores. Even though I can’t be there this week I hope to find my beach somewhere.

Old and young enjoy surfing. Photo by Mike Hartley

And when I say find my beach I mean a mental sweet spot in life where you’re as relaxed as you are walking on the beach. Yes, that kind of peace.

Cars Turning Heads

I finished editing some of the classic autos I shot in Ocean City last Thursday’s boardwalk parade. Uploaded 137 shots of some colors and styles that just make me smile. Enjoy the Gallary if you like things on 4 wheels.

Outside looking in wishing to be behind the wheel. Photo by Mike Hartley

I learned a lot of things on this shoot. Changing angle, elevation, and location. I also learned I need to bring my damn tripod because holding that brick out for extended periods worked on my back in not such a nice way.

Shooting car shows where everyone is parked isn’t as fun as people driving them on real streets. Or boardwalk in this case. Next year I’ll have more than an hour and a half to shoot. Maybe a day or two.

One mistake I can’t seem to just get over having grown up in the film era. It’s just not in my DNA to fire away at will but that is what I need to do in some spots and far more times than I use it now. I’ve got to find a balance because I feel I miss some shots because I don’t shoot enough.

Tomorrow I pick up the cameras again. Practice Practice Practice.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Tomorrow might be an unexpected very big day.
  • I should have purchased a recliner for the basement years before we got one.
  • My mind is racing tonight. I just hope it’s not towards a headache.
  • I don’t like missing nice days outside. I really don’t like being under the weather as the reason.

Practice Practice Practice

I’ve been learning a little about shooting cars this summer. Mostly through practice, practice, and practice. Cars are extensions of people. Color, style, size, shape, and the numerous ways to modify and accent them. Capturing those expressions of art is a lot of fun.

Car people are good people from my encounters and my natural love of cars from a very young age has made it a lifelong obsession. I’ve lost track of the times I’ve blurted out “Look at that” startling my wife while I’m pointing at a car going the opposite way or coming from behind in my side mirrors.

Shooting them is a lot of location, angles, and details. Good weather and clear skies also help. So timing is important.

Colar and Chrome. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve hit some local car shows this year but the Ocean City Maryland event this week was off the charts for me. I’m going to return next year and see what action I can capture while they are rolling. Time was very limited and we were leaving on the first day of 4, so I didn’t get in the inlet show or convention center or the many lots that just turn into shows in themselves.

Yes, you can get some good shots at shows but it’s a lot more limited. Cars side by side limit your options. But sometimes you can squeeze a frame down the side that accents things well. Or find a pair together at the end of an aisle.

TWO X TWO TONE. – Or maybe Get A Lick of These Two. Photo by Mike Hartley

But I also learned through being at the beach this week with the Cruisin event that a lot of it is action shots of cars in motion that I haven’t done much of and hope to spend next May and October practicing that at those events.

I wasn’t in a good spot for background in what I shot of the boardwalk parade of cars on Thursday morning. I’ll have to spend a few minutes cropping. Live and learn.

3 and 4 deep along the boardwalk for the Thursday Parade. Photo by Mike Hartley

So next year I’ll go into this with a lot more plans. I know the town well so getting to the right backdrops for the boardwalk parade. Recognizable landmarks or backdrops. Like low-angle shots of cars coming down Baltimore Avenue with the roller coaster in the background. Or Fishers Popcorn on the boardwalk when some of the old trucks roll by.

I’ll focus on detail shots at the various lots and convention center. But I’m really looking forward to capturing some rolling thunder on Coastal Highway in both stills and video. Hopefully, I can follow up on the grandiose plans I’m coming up with.

I promise not to bore you with all the car shooting I’ve done. I’ll put a link when I get this week’s shooting edited and uploaded. Well, I probably won’t be able to not sneak in 1 or 2 here or there on the blog.

Have a great day. I hope to have the time to do another post later today.

Oh yeah, the above car shots were outside Dumsers Diner and Ice Cream restaurant. I usually stop there for a cherry ice cream soda (the old fountain style) before leaving town.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A reminder of what season it is will return today.
  • I’m looking forward to spending some time with a very important person today.
  • It won’t last, but I’m feeling good so far today.
  • Rest is important. If you have the time for it. If not try to make some.

Back

We are back from 2 nights in Ocean City Maryland. Beautiful weather and the ocean water was still warm enough to get in. A little metal refresh for my better half and myself. We took a short trip to Assitique Island for the first time to sample the beach there. And went up to walk the town of Bethany Beach Delaware one afternoon. There was good food and comfortable lodging with an oceanfront view and balcony.

I wish I could have stayed another day because it was Endless Summer Cruisin Week. The smell of race fuel, the roar of a strong V8, beautiful paint jobs, and all the favorite classic and contemporary cars, trucks and what have you fixed up on 4 wheels are there. And boy what a show it is.

I’ve got a ton of car photos I’ll slide in every now and then but I must go down for the weekend next time. There were already a ton of cars there on Wednesday and Thursday. The morning parade of cars going down the 27-block boardwalk, the cruising up and down Ocean Highway or Philadephia Avenue is a wonderful sight.

Heading out for the morning catch. Photo by Mike Hartley

We still did a lot despite me not feeling my best. Getting used to powering through discomfort. I hope the rest of the weekend is better. And to facilitate that I believe a good night’s rest is in order after that late night last night.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m just back from one trip and would like to leave for another one.
  • Thank goodness though that I will see my children this weekend. I was missing them. Being at the beach without them and the grandchildren was strange.
  • Next time I’m at the beach I think I’ll bring a small batch of sand home, put it in a box, and sit it under my desk so I can put my feet in it while I work.

Late Drive

If only I had developed a higher drive for my own work earlier in life. No time though for wondering what might have been, just time to get going on today’s work. So today’s title really stands for two things. The passion and late drive I find myself with now and the late drive I plan on taking at night this weekend to capture some images for a book I hope to do.

I’m guessing the car show at Mikey and Mels this Saturday is going to be a rainout. I’ve enjoyed going to a few more this year. No problem though because I’ll be seeing my children and grandchildren this weekend.

I’m so fortunate to be part of their lives now. I cherish every moment with them. This year with my granddaughter is special because she will be starting school next year, leading to a bit of separation. Of course, we will go to her activities and anything we can but they begin to get their own circle of friends which is normal.

I have a young grandson, so many days of young ones marching through my home are on the agenda for a while.

Hoping everyone had a great day.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Find the things that motivate you. Embrace them, even if they are difficult.
  • Time to batten down the hatches here in the mid-Atlantic.
  • Watching a child discover will always induce a smile.
  • Finding new ways to love each day, can you imagine if everyone had that thought each day?
  • I thought my days of working on cars were over. I’m starting to get the bug again.
  • Pain is an unusual motivator.

Something

It’s good to try to do something. Even when there is time to do nothing. Or the inspiration doesn’t come. Or the body is in pain or the mind is troubled. Do something.

Contrast

I love the pushbutton radio installed sideways in the console. Given the year if it’s original it’s probably AM only. And yes that is a hand crank for the window. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Isn’t it strange how busy just happens to you each day?
  • Everyone has their limits. It’s good to know them before stumbling over them.
  • I thought I said I was tired of rain as I sat here and listened to the thunder and rain pounding on the side of the house.
  • Hats off to the person who invented the hammock.

Head or tails

A busy traffic day for the deer. A group of 6 this morning and another 3 this afternoon including an 8-point and 6-point bucks. It’s the only shooting I did today with the exception of a few shots of my granddaughter.

So I really feel I should go out after the rains and do some night shooting but I’m pretty tired from short sleep nights this week. I think I’ll flip a coin.

Well, it’s tails, And the tail on this BLK ROSE car below wins. I wish I could have captured the paint on this better. I’ll have to figure out angles to capture the various colors they throw off in different lights. But back to head and tails.

It’s that day that we usually give a choice. We had our 4-year-old granddaughter today and the day is about choice. What to eat, what to play, where to go, what to drink, what to draw, what fantasy with the doll house, and towards the end of the day “what time will Mommy be home?”

Chrome. Photo by Mike Hartley

And at the end of the day, two worn-out grandparents who will probably crash early on a Friday night.

To the piece of crap that did the bomb threat to Arlington National Cemetery today. May Karma visit you in getting caught and again at trial and especially in prison.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I remembered how to play hopscotch today with my granddaughter.
  • I don’t mind being outside in this weather.
  • Tommy Tuberville, senator of Alabama, should be removed as a threat to national security.
  • At one time in history, people fact-checked themselves.
  • It felt great to spend a few minutes in the hammock today. A real treat.

M Meet

I joined an online group of people who own Miata’s in Maryland. They have regular monthly hookups and trips and I finally got to my first meeting yesterday at the parking lot outside Neo Pizza and Taphouse. What a nice group of people who enjoy the roadster experience and fixing up their rides.

I’m looking forward to meeting more of them and fixing up my own ride. Thought I’d share a few photos I posted to the group today here also.

I love the maps they have provided for scenic routes and landmarks with other tips. I can’t wait to take a few of those this fall when the colors change. And provide you pictures of these cars in their element.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve worked in the same industry for just about 5 decades, and I’ve never been more uncertain about its future than I am now and what my role would be in it. So there is no better time to reinvent myself.
  • This is the LAST Labor Day Holiday I will be working for someone else.
  • There are some serious issues between labor and management in many industries that are coming to a head.
  • Again my salute to all who labor who don’t get the financial rewards or appreciation they deserve. Fire and police, teachers and medical, transportation to sanitation, farmers to senior care, food prep to childcare. To those at the lower end in retail and service industries that get treated like crap. I salute you all.

Top Ten reasons to retire

A time and place

I’ve heard there is a time and place for everything. Boy would I like to see that in my lifetime. Then again, I can’t complain, my life has been pretty full. And today’s another day to help fill the list out. A day of vacation so it’s not my normal dreaded Sunday night.

Come to Papa. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll be able to grill out later and be able to rest after dinner instead of jumping into the hot seat at the job. I could try to get a good night’s sleep or just stay up and work on my hobbies. Oh, the day can’t come quick enough where every day is vacation.

I had better get back to the job that is only half complete, moving a cord of wood on a warm sunny day. With this humidity, I’m guessing some rain can’t be far off.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There are times in life when it’s about what others want. Other times are for what the others want that you missed the first go-round.
  • It’s amazing how many times in a day I can be very happy and very unhappy on the same day.
  • I’ve really changed my sports viewing habits this last decade. I haven’t watched NASCAR since Junior retired. I haven’t watched golf since Tiger stopped playing. I’ve watched more baseball this year because the game got quicker. I always watch a ton of college basketball but the pro game has less viewing time each year. I still can’t get into soccer that much. My pro football interest is less and for college, it’s just following the local team. A lot of pro sports are getting out of the range of a lot of people to see in person.
  • The number of people bitching about what is wrong has exceeded the number trying to fix what’s wrong by such a margin that I’m not sure we can recover from it.

Start

You can start slowly. You can start like a ball of fire. You can start late or on time. You can start today. You can start tomorrow. As long as you start, things will get better.

Yesterday my intention was to get out early. I was up before sunrise and wanted to get out and do some shooting. Finally, I got my behind in gear and out the door at 8 a.m. I was going to a car show down in Fulton but that didn’t start till 10 am so I went cruising and on my way home I cut through Turf Valley.

Aflame. Photo by Mike Hartley

And low and behold a car show in their parking lot. So I spent a few minutes wandering through and grabbing a few images I’ll bore you with from time to time.

The day after that was a blur. Some time with my son’s family and then a long drive home, a few minor chores and I was done. So done in fact I laid down and passed out for the evening without publishing something. Such is life. Now here I am in the middle of the night finishing up a piece I started yesterday thinking about taking a very early morning ride and maybe a few photo ops.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love 3 a.m. in the morning. It’s so quiet outside. But only when I take these headphones off.
  • I think I’ll put the ping-pong table back up when I retire.
  • Infants are the most honest people I know. They have no problem telling you how they feel.
  • Time to fire up that engine and put the top down. Later I’ll fire up the grill and put the top on.

I have the scoop

There are few things better than waking up and realizing you’re starting a week of vacation. And while it’s not the best weather forecast for the first day it will be a good day regardless.

Who’s got the scoop today? Photo by Mike Hartley

There is some fun planned in between many important tasks. Actually, I hope to squeeze in a ton of fun. Some quality time with my better half. A few happy hours with friends. Maybe a few road trips or just some aimless cruising on a sunny afternoon. Better yet a 3 am cruise when nobody is out on the roads and enjoy the wonderful highways most people just inch along on.

I’m so thankful my children live within a drive where we can be part of their lives and help with the grandchildren when needed. Those times are so precious but it also reminds me how fast life moves. But vacations allow me some more opportunities which we always take advantage of.

Kids grow faster than the weeds in my yard, and that is saying something. The time to be part of their lives and support system is so short. I think I’ll try to complete a few projects I’ve been working on for them this week.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Time to cut loose. I love manual transmissions.
  • Everybody wants a piece of somebody.
  • Sometimes you have to look a little deeper for the good in people.
  • It’s funny how in business, if you got 3 out of 10 questions right your days of employment are numbered. But if you play baseball and are successful 3 out of 10 times at the plate you are a superstar.
  • I worry about some foundations that I thought were very solid.
  • I really like this version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Why not

Usually, I can find all kinds of reasons not to play, just looking at the to-do list will squash those thoughts. But lately, even after I got that immediate list of reasons not to play, I’m starting to ask myself, why not. I think that is because I’m in the later stages of life and priorities have shifted.

Like today for instance. So what if the lower backyard by the woods needs cutting? The only person it used to bother or maybe ever bothered was me. Doesn’t bother me today so I’d rather go for a ride in my nice clean Miata than push a mower and swing around a string trimmer.

Photos by Mike Hartley

When faced with alternatives or just remembering that I do have alternatives now that I didn’t before is kind of enlightening. Kind of freeing also in a way that a change of pace includes my priorities and wishes. And after taking that afternoon ride I know I made the right decision. Even though it was 90 degrees and humid the top was down, shame on you convertible owners with the top up and A/C on.

And now that it’s cooled off I’ll throw the cover on it before the storms this evening and tomorrow.

Why not clean out? It feels good to do it. You get more of your home back. We are still working our way through family items. Yeah I know, it’s taken years. We recently just pulled a lot of things out of the attic. My better half took some to the church this afternoon for their sale this summer.

Next on the list is a big chest of items. Photo by Mike Hartley

I started with a file cabinet and now have a huge pile to shred but a pile went in recycling and some to trash. Tonight I’m going to work on cleaning out the office a bit.

I asked myself why not at least try. Why not Paint? Why not Skulpt? Why not Carve? So I will.

Reminder

The Howard County Fair is underway. If I’m lucky I’ll get there on Tuesday – Senior Day and take some new fair images.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s possible these are the best of times. So have fun today and tomorrow.
  • My better half makes killer Sunday dinners.
  • Today is the best I’ve felt in a week and I’d say I feel about 50%. But there is tomorrow.
  • My creative thoughts that had been squashed recently are beginning to return.

Smooth Sunday

We checked out a car show thrown by Mikey and Mel’s Famos Deli this morning after a great breakfast there. I think we will go back and check out lunch someday soon also. Great service and food. I’m not sure if it was just the first show of the season or if the word is spreading but this seems to be getting bigger and bigger each year.

Photos by Mike Hartley

A relaxed afternoon was had. I was thinking about a nap before dinner but that time has passed. After chow, an all-nighter at work again as a new week at the job that pays the bills begins. These weekends are gone in a blink of an eye. I think I’m getting worn down and need a break. I really haven’t taken any time off this year so far. I think one sick day. But that is my normal pattern, I love to take off when the weather is better.

It’s my hope that this smooth start to the Sunday continues through the week ahead. I need to get back to some daily shooting again and no better time than the present. Can’t believe it’s the last week of March. I’ve got to set some milestones to get more accomplished.

I did get busy trying some stone etchings. I’m starting to get a feel for it. And I probably uploaded a few dozen images to the photo site and finished a 5-page list of thoughts, ideas, suggestions, feelings, and realities for someone our parents would want us to look out for.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I really like having meals out with my better half.
  • Warning – anyone with stock in Coke (soft drink) I’m on a mission to reduce my sugar intake so a drastic cutback in this product will certainly affect market price in the future.
  • It’s a busy medical month ahead. Looking for good news at every step.
  • It looks like Winter and I have come to a good understanding of what is expected. No snow and warmer-than-average temperatures.

Wheels

I’m glad I made it to the Coffee and Cars this morning sponsored by Mikey and Mel’s Famous Deli I believe. I like going down here because it’s close and it’s usually a fairly good show. And the only one that I know of in Howard County. Please enlighten me if I’m missing out.

It looked like a good turnout of both cars and spectators. My award goes to the gentleman who owned the green late 60s Camaro. As people would come up and if they had young children he would offer to let them sit behind the wheel. I didn’t get a shot of his car other than his hood.

There is something for everyone there and I’ll try to share a few more photos at the bottom of the coming posts this weekend. My granddaughter is here, a favor for a friend is needed and chores will take most of the remainder of the day.

I like car people. They are a nice friendly lot. Like most bikers are. I should have spent some more time there but there will be more shows. It’s got me thinking about the show in Ocean City in early October.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • No matter how upset my granddaughter may be in when she has to leave, I can always cheer her up and get a smile by running alongside the car for a few seconds pretending I’m going to beat them home as they leave.
  • There is always something more you can do.
  • Any morning that starts out with a clogged drain is not a good morning but working to turn it around. With the help of “liquid plumber” and a car show.

Youth Returned

When I was young I liked going straight fast. Now with some age I like going into turns fast. Well, not to fast of course. Well within our laws for those of you who are in law enforcement reading this. It’s actually the most fun driving experience I’ve had in a car. Having ridden a motorcycle for a few decades it’s the only thing on 4 wheels that compares to it. And the convertible gives it that view of a motorcycle. Plus I don’t have to wear a helmet with this vehicle.

This is my first convertible and if I’m lucky enough to outlive this car my next one will be a convertible. Yes with the top up is noisier than a hardtop. But that is a small sacrifice. This car puts a smile on my face like my first muscle car. Well it wasn’t really a muscle car. It looked like one. It sounded like one. Just didn’t run like one. That small 350 wasn’t enough for that heavy 74 Camero frame.

I can’t wait till my shoulder feels better and the temps warm, the trees start to green. Those hard tires which seem to lose traction in this cool weather begin to stick again. So with the temps in the 60’s this weekend I hope to get an early wash and wax on the daily commuter and weekend sports car (one in the same) and be ready to style when winter is over. Being I’m down to one arm, maybe I can get that good one hurting equally with the one already in pain.

Looking forward to a great hump day ahead, and maybe some afternoon shooting.

Keep on Truckin

Most all my friends own pickups. Kind of scary when you think about it. I’ve never owned one myself. I’d be worried, but I’m more redneck than any of them and I’m the one without the pick’em up truck. I like the new trucks. They are marvels of engineering. But give me the durability of a 60’s or early 70’s Ford truck with 3 on the tree and I’ll show you a truck that could take ABUSE and keep on going.

I should have spent some time on this one but didn't want to start the day off with my better half wrong. Photo by Mike Hartley

My two friends who are brothers tried to each kill that truck. Either it had unlimited lives or was possessed. The new styles are very good-looking indeed but there is something about old classic trucks that draws my attention much more like the one above.

Well being its such a nice day I should go give my baby a bath and take a ride. We will see, lots of chores in progress.

Rear Profiling

I’m like a small child when it comes to cars. Historic to modern-day. Anything with style, performance, color, chrome, sound. It’s just great to catch them out on the road. Because there is what the car and owner both need. It can be that open road or interstate. It can be that country road or “the strip”.  Yeah there are showroom pieces but to me a car must be driven. So here’s to driving and being behind the wheel. Sorry I don’t have more to share. Lack of sleep and not feeling my best today. But tomorrow will be better

Taking Terms Literally

If you grew up in my era, the term “Getting your doors blown off” meant losing a race. It appears they are taking it a bit more literally these days.

Classic lines

I love automobiles, always have, always will. The sight or sound of a nice one can stop me in my tracks. I think I first realized it when I got my first V8, sat in it and grabbed that T handled Hurst 4 speed, fired it up with those Hooker headers and side pipes, and all of a sudden I was alive, I was one with the vehicle. I haven’t had that feeling in a very long time. Well with the exception of my best friend letting me drive his new Grand Sport Vette recently.

The designs and lines. The colors and shapes. The sweet sound and smells of a finely tuned system. The era they represent. They are magic to me. It’s hard to explain the feeling a great car can give and that one of the great enjoyments in life is to have your butt cheeks grab the car seat like a great white shark grabs a sea-lion. Your driving then. Not this crap sitting for hours in traffic, that’s torture. Something with 400+ horsepower and some open road, is what I need and long for.

I haven’t had a nice car since the 70’s but thinking about changing that while I still have the coordination to drive something powerful again because riding a bike again is out according to my better half. I did manage to squeeze in 30 years of 2 wheel driving. Well, sometimes one wheel if that mysterious twist in my wrist would happen.

Probably just a distant dream at this time, unless I suddenly become selfish, but getting a muscle car still on my bucket list if I get lucky. It also reminded me to add the Car Show in Ocean City to my list of events to photograph in Maryland this year. It gives me an excuse to get to the beach and that is a wonderful though when the temperature outside this morning was 1 degree and a minus 15 wind chill temp.

So like my favorite car commercial from Dodge shows. I still might have a few years before I get that Challenger.

So you have been warned, there will be more car pictures in the future but I will do my best suppress the urge to post every tire burning shot I might capture in OC.
