Discovery

Each day is this wonderous opportunity. I’ve felt so relaxed and so charged up at the same time. I’m working harder at my own pursuits the last few days and feeding this body some much needed rest at the same time.

Off the bench. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s been an interesting start to 2024. Just getting off that night shift has done wonders for my mental outlook. I feel like I’m part of society again. Not that I didn’t like my fellow nocturnal beings, there just weren’t too many of us.

Each day I’m discovering myself again. For I’m out of the business I worked my life in and while I separated my identity from that a while back, I’m learning what my new identity is.

I’m reprioritizing. I’m sorting differently. And I’m working with a sense of urgency and purpose now. I get up and I’m excited to get to work. I don’t see limits, just possibilities. So off I go for this early morning hour.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Listening is good but asking more questions is better if you really want to know.
  • Pick good friends, incorporate their best qualities.
  • Work at something you love each day.
  • Be with someone you love each day.

Youth attachment

The Bloganuary prompt asks “Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?”

I thought about a car from my youth I loved but I have no idea what became of the 74 Camaro. So I’ll go with two other things I do know what became of them. Well before the car I had an interest in photography.

The old Kodak camera my Mom and Dad used over the years was my first taste in the mid-60s. I loved it and with my Mom’s help, I was able to get my first camera I believe in 1969 or 1970. It was a huge step up and I loved it.

I still have both along with a ton of other old cameras from my family.

I also have my old glove and bat from my teen years. But it would take a while to find them and then clean them up to be photographed. I’ll have to get the bat ready for the grandson. Do they still use wood bats?

One of those days

Every once in a while you get these wake up calls. Enlightening information or perspectives. Ones that change your thoughts and actions in life. I had a few in recent months. Some good information that changed my outlook for the better and some not so good information that I’m also looking at for the better.

For example, retiring a bit earlier than planned. While that has turned out to be a blessing (at least the first 10 days have been). It also shook me up for a few days when cutbacks were announced. After 26 years at the same place it’s a bit like your second home and all those neighbors are going away.

I’ve gotten charged up on creating and the more I do the more I’m fired up to do more. I’m trying to do 2-4 posts a day this year, working on a few books each day, utilizing that nice printer I have and cranking out larger prints for framing. And from today forward I’m going to be doing a lot more shooting (photography type) which means more time editing. All of this is becoming a labor of love.

A few months back I saw a photo of myself that a friend snapped that I used to change my direction in taking better care of my body. It’s not that I hadn’t seen pictures of myself when I was heavier, but it was this particular one with friends that caught me and provided the switch that said stick with it. And after a few months I was able to change what I hadn’t in a few decades. I’ll post the shot I’m talking about when I take another one of me and the same friends at the beach this year.

There are other recent events that have taught me things about people and about myself. Ones that will shape my future and have refocused me. Ones that are a real wake up call. And I’m thankful for that because today will be better for it and every day forward.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Wind = Mother Natures hedge trimmers and chainsaw. And sometimes house renovator.
  • I have a taste for pizza today.
  • Gambling is becoming such a part of sports broadcast, programming and advertising I’m losing my interest in most of them.
  • Each day just got more special.

Missions

“What is your mission?” Asks the daily writing prompt.

Another question I said “Yuck” to initially but it really is a good question. In short, Love, Cherish, Respect, Work, Create, Share, Laugh, Admire and Reflect each day. Oh yeah, put the top down on the Miata, point it towards the beach and go through the gears if its a warm sunny day.

More specific missions

  • To make my better half happy.
  • To be a great father and grandfather.
  • To make my friends laugh and be there for them.
  • To be the artist I thought about starting as a teen.
  • To enjoy this day.
  • To create some special pieces of art or write something that brings a smile.

Sail Away

I don’t believe tomorrow or Wednesday will be days to fly a kite unless you want it to land a few hundred miles away.

I think I’d like to go to the next expo. Photo by Mike Hartley

Maryland International Kite Expo in Ocean City Maryland April 26-28 2024. I might have to see if this event will fly with my better half.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • At this age it’s hard to tell if its the workout that hurts or it’s just hurting regardless of the workout.
  • There is no bad nap time.

Calm before the Storm

I love getting up before dawn. I feel creative in the early mornings, it’s quiet with little to no interruptions. It feels like I get more done at this time of day than any other part. When it’s warmer I’m out and about capturing images of others catching morning waves be it here at home, at the beach or where ever I am.

Another early riser in Ocean City. Photo by Mike Hartley

But not this morning, lots of tasks to knock out before more craft time. I think I’ll make my better half some breakfast first and then enlist her help with some logistical things.

Even thought the sun will be making an appearance today we are expecting some significant rainfall and strong winds tomorrow and Wednesday. That combo could lead to a loss of power so I’ll have to get prepared for that possibility.

So I should work on a few post for the next few days and schedule them just in case. Then make all the outdoor and indoor preparations on the home today. I’ll get all the devices and batteries for the cameras charged today. I haven’t been out shooting flood photos in a while and I hope that isn’t the case tomorrow, but I see a flood watch posted already. Also a high wind advisory.

Mother Nature will do what she will do. I wish everyone facing her wrath the best this week.

Dining Tip of the Day

The Bluestone Restaurant in Timonium Maryland is one of our family favorites. Usually meeting up there around the holiday season. The Shrimp Tacos and Calamari were my choice. The service, food and atmosphere are great.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel opportunity right before me. I’m reaching for it.
  • I’m trying to embrace change. It’s a large thing to get your arms around.
  • When you think your challenging yourself enough, add a little more.
  • A day of anticipation. Important appointment coming up.

Week 1

There is still 5 hours in this fine day to utilize and maybe accomplish something special. I will certainly try my best. But its been a pretty good week after leaving a job of a few decades. First time I’ve been out of work since my teen years.

A lot of time was spent in transition activities. Another chunk in household transition from holiday to normal again. I was telling someone that time seems to pass even faster off the job. Maybe I’m having more fun. Then again I had to deal with both federal and state governments this week and that wasn’t much fun at all.

Putting the last of the ornament’s away. Photo by Mike Hartley

All the extra chores and tasks didn’t stop me from my hobbies, taking a few photos, making some prints, increasing my blogging activity and starting a few books (both writing and reading). I did get the start on gearing up the production facility (my home office). The basement has been reorganized. The office is in transition to properly utilize the space. I have an area for portraits started.

The list of 2024 goals is tacked to the wall. I was able to restart some collaboration with a very old friend on an idea we had back in August of 23, we both had a few setback in between. We looked at holiday lights on New Years Day/evening. Made my first trip to Savage Mill and had a great day with my better half.

I cooked one night (and didn’t kill us). I’ll shoot for two nights this coming week.

Special About the Week

What was special this week? Time with my better half. My daughter getting a beautiful classroom in a new school mid year. Talking to my son and daughter. Hearing my grandson was feeling better. Hoping my daughter in-law feels better soon. Missing my granddaughter on Friday.

I’m getting more sleep. I’m thinking more clearly. Physically feeling more fit. I feel great about some things and a bit down on a few others.

I don’t know why this photo triggered that thought but they did seem to go together. And even though temps are in the 30s this morning I know these past months and years have been some of the warmest I remember.

So I’m going to try to do my part to reduce my footprint on the planet.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Assembling the artificial tree and bringing in a real one is a lot more fun than taking the real one out again and disassembling the artificial one.
  • It was a double blanket night.
  • I feel like I get more accomplished in the mornings.
  • Smiles with different intentions use different muscles.

Burning time

Might be cold outside but its toasty in here. That 1-2 inch snow line I believe I saw us under this morning turned into a couple of ice pellets before changing to rain. A cold rain with a breeze. I’m keeping my back side inside this day.

Just before noon today. Photo by Mike Hartley

I saw some flowers that were about to hit the trash and a candle and had a second while cooking some bacon. So I snipped a few buds and flipped the bacon and snapped a few frames.

But todays main thrust was writing. And I did a lot of that along with some home chores. Tomorrow I’ll venture out and do some shooting.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There is something to be thankful for each day. Some days it takes a little more thinking to appreciate what it was.
  • I have one day left to accomplish something else special this week.
  • I’m already tired of winter.
  • I hate going to be unhappy.

Bullseye

I can feel the excitement building. Not just a weekend. A weekend where the white stuff might fall from the sky. We didn’t have any snow last year. And the year before was light if this old man’s memory is working correctly this afternoon.

Color will not be deterred in winter. Photo by Mike Hartley

So I took advantage of the sunshine today to get the lights, cords, wreaths, garland, bows, and beads down for the holiday before they get wet. In one way it feels early. I always leave the trees for last. Packing the ornaments and taking off the lights, boxing up the artificial one, and putting the old one back in the scrap wood pile to turn into mulch.

But tomorrow morning I’m thinking about braving the cold and maybe getting some early snow shots. I believe it’s around 9 or 10 am says the experts. I should be quick because it’s turning to rain after that.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Testing my initiative tomorrow morning.
  • Feeling good about some things and poorly about others. I guess that’s par for the course.
  • I feel like I’m making good progress, but sometimes it takes a bit more time to reflect it.
  • Every so often I’m reminded nobody knows me.

Milling About

We took a trip to Savage Mill today after some errands. And started with a great lunch at The Dive Bar and Grille. I had the Alabama Slammer burger and my better half had the Strawberry Balsamico salad. We finished it with each having a buttercream from Sweet Cascades Chocolatier. In between we strolled around indoors and outside for a short bit.

I was very sad to see HorseSpirit Arts Gallary closing its doors. They have many beautiful pieces in there. I haven’t downloaded it from the other camera but had a few images from the phone to share. I’ll be going back there in the spring where we can sit outside and dine if it’s nice and wander outside and some nearby trails.

I have to admit this is my first visit to Savage Mill and it’s got that artist environment that I like in between other stores my better half is drawn to. I liked the ArtCraft store the most. A couple of books were purchased from The Last Word bookstore.

My first suggestion for what to do this week looked to be a winner.

Good morning

I was up early this morning, a few hours before sunrise. I ran across this image from an early morning walk at the beach looking from the boardwalk at Bethany back into town with the moon, fog, and coming sunrise creating an interesting light.

I like early mornings. It’s so calm before the storm of people. Photo by Mike Hartley

Thankfully it’s a sunny morning here in the state of Maryland. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed though with the mound of issues and tasks before me. I just have to remember, 1 at a time. Hard to do at times though.

Even though I’ve made good progress I feel the day slipping by already. And I thought time flew by last year. We seem to be in hyperdrive so far this year. I feel I need to incorporate something fun today. I’ll have to work on those ideas.

I’ve got a book I want to finish by the end of the week. Just started it this morning so I better go and get through a few more pages. Have a great morning all.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Still trying to find my right sleep zone. I’ve got to settle on something soon because I’m all over the place now. But on the positive side, I’m getting at least 7-8 hours which is a good improvement.
  • If you feel alone, you probably are.
  • There is no hump day in my work week any longer because what I do, I do for love and that’s not work.
  • The more valued you feel within, the happier you will be.

I like mornings again

This new schedule suits me just fine. I don’t feel like crap anymore in the mornings. And when my better half greets me with some cinnamon buns it’s a very good morning. The last few nights I’ve been sleeping for longer durations, which is doing wonders mentally and physically.

As it says, “Made with Love by Mom.” Photo by Mike Hartley

Breakfast has always been one of my favorite meals. And now I won’t be eating it in the afternoons as I did when I was working nights. Most days I would just go straight to lunch or dinner. But now, I can get back to the smells and tastes of bacon and eggs shortly before or after sunrise.

Another reason I like mornings is I’m getting extra time with my better half. We are fresh before the stresses of the day start to attack. Before she was already in 3rd or 4th gear and I had yet to engage my transmission when waking up at noon or after. It was like we weren’t in sync any nights I worked.

When I would change my schedule each week to get up in the mornings was a struggle because 4 days of the week I would be sleeping. But now we are in sync and enjoying the first few days of the new year together.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There are a great number of things that can pull on your time. Not all are worth grabbing hold of.
  • An earthquake woke me last night. Strange for the northeast.
  • It’s the kind of cold out recently that bothers me.
  • Forge ahead regardless of everything.

What a Day

I haven’t felt this alive in a while. Like I’m looking out and I have the chance to redefine my world. What an opportunity that is to have. And now that the job that pays the bills is no longer, the time to live again for wonderful things is about to happen. I don’t know who is more excited, my better half or me.

I’ve boxed up my work computers and they are ready to be sent back. Moved my work desk back into my office and got my two computers set up nicely on a separate desk. Also redesigned the TV area of the basement space a bit.

I think this is the first New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day that I haven’t worked in a long time. It’s sweet to have the time off. Tomorrow is another day off followed by another one and so on. Life is great again.

Coming up with my own 2024 goals list. It’s already pretty flushed out with ideas to review with my partner in travel and adventure. Tonight we are going to travel and see local light displays. Was too tired last night but we are out and about for a bit this evening.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Love is in the air to start the new year.
  • Retirement is a happiness pill you don’t even have to swallow, it’s just absorbed.
  • A cold rain does nothing for me.
  • Learning in bunches today. It feels good.

Company Man

I’ve been a big supporter of the companies I’ve worked for throughout my career. I worked my ass off for these companies. I’ve sacrificed for these companies. I believed in these companies. I believed in the people working their asses off side by side with me. I’ve defended and sometimes even been a public face for them.

I believed in the mission these companies stood for and provided to the communities I lived in. I was proud and honored to work at each of them. I gave it my all, well most days, nobody’s perfect. I worked with the most inspiring people. I worked with the most talented people. I worked with the most respected people. I worked for some great leaders, publishers, editors, writers, photographers, technicians, and every other person who supports and makes a news organization run.

I have great respect for those behind the scenes and in the production and support areas that keep those news machines moving 24/7/365. Without fail, without pause, regardless of conditions, with ingenuity, with guile, with dedication.

Select your companies carefully. Photo by Mike Hartley

I never believed when I started in the mid-70s that the profession of local and national journalism would be mistrusted, despised, and hated. But coming out of that 2000-2008 timeframe and depression the dynamic changed. And continued to this day.

I feel like I was kind of blessed to work in the era I did, with the people I did, with the companies I did. Today is my last day with The Washington Post. And formerly of Zip Publishing, Patuxent Publishing, and Stromberg Publishing. Almost 5 decades flew by in the blink of an eye. And yes I did enjoy the journey. And a special thanks to all those I encountered along the way for all the laughs and successes at the same time.

So tomorrow I’ll be working for the company of my better half, my children and grandchildren, my friends, and of course here at TME. I might be retiring from Newspaper Publishing but I hope to be publishing for a long time to come both here and in other spots. Professionally who knows what’s ahead?

Satisfying Saturday

Beyond needing to be pricked twice for bloodwork this morning it’s been a good day. I’ve accomplished a good bit, I’ve gotten a little rest, and the Terps won their bowl game. My family is happy and I’m about to check in on a few friends.

It’s getting near time to wrap up this year and put a bow on it. A year of ups and downs but that is common among all of them.

Seems I can never find a bow when I need one. Photo by Mike Hartley

So I’ll bid the last Saturday of 2023 ado and rise early on Sunday morning. For there is no sense in being out tomorrow evening on amateur night. I’m going to end the year with family. A nice meal, maybe a quick ride after sunset to look at holiday light displays in the area, and then a quiet evening with my better half.

2023 is the end of one professional life and the beginning of another for me. A completely new journey to enjoy and savor launches. One of so many facets that it’s hard to keep up with them. New skills to acquire, learning on a scale that would rival my early years, and working with a new passion never felt before.

Time to pursue dreams, time to enjoy the company and love of my better half, and time to pass on knowledge to children and grandchildren. Time to take in the wonderful words of others through active reading and learning how to write myself.

Challenging my confidence by sharing my creations. Making something that brings a smile to someone or pauses with curiosity or wonder.

Tomorrow is an end and a beginning like never before in my lifetime.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m not used to going to bed before sunrise.
  • I’ve always had a work desk and a personal desk at home. Tomorrow begins the day that they are just desks.
  • I love Cherry/Chocolate candy kisses. I wonder if they only do those during holiday time. Seems to be when they are in the house.
  • I’m soon to be footballed out.

A walk

I took my last walk around the building Tuesday after I collected things from my desk. A lot of people were off but I saw two very important people and had nice conversations and hugs from each of them. My better half snapped a few pictures, one of me over the main newsroom area on my last visit.

I never thought I would take a job in D.C. That drive is not easy in good weather and can be very long at certain times of the day. Hell, it’s a long drive through some of the worst traffic in the country. I did it for over two decades. Plus trips to the data centers in Virginia and printing plants in College Park and Springfield. But downtown was the main office for most of my career.

In one way this was a little strange. I had more of an attachment to the old building on 15th and L Street than the current office at One Franklin Square. Not that the new one isn’t beautiful and clean and critter-free, it just didn’t have the same feeling when I left the old one. And I guess rightfully so because it was more time in the old building than the new space.

But after almost 26 years it was time to go. So I got my better half a visitor pass and we went up to the office on the 6th floor. I had purged pretty well a few years back so it was pretty easy. Just a few small boxes, my sweat jacket, and a couple of hand weights.

Wandered for a few minutes and then called it a career in newspapers. Several of us are doing a Zoom meeting tonight to bid farewell. It’s been many many things to me. But it’s nice to sit here and have a smile on my face, looking back at the past and also ahead to the future.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m so happy for my Daughter today. She deserved a good day.
  • Dealing with an experienced salesman is like a swordfight.
  • I have my ink refills, time to crank up the printer again. It needed a little break anyway but now back to work, you printing press.
  • The right time to take your Christmas/Holiday lights down is when you’re damn ready to.

All nighter

I’m in the final hours of my last all-nighter working for someone other than myself. I work, excuse me, worked an overnight shift for the last 10 years and this evening is the last one—no more night shifts in my future.

Boardwalk at night. Photo by Mike Hartley

It might take me a little bit to reintegrate with you day walkers. I’ll have to get used to being amongst more people. No more missing Sunday night football or Monday night football or any games that landed Sunday through Wednesday nights with the boys.

No night driving, no food deserts, no shady characters about.

Night shifts are like outer offices, out of sight, out of mind. But that is okay now because all that stuff is in the rearview mirror.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I got to reconnect with my daughter this week. It feels wonderful.
  • The gift of real life is coming back to me.
  • When I clock out tonight that will be a relaxing breath.
  • Tonight gives the term “Home Stretch” a whole new meaning.

A peaceful morning

The stress of the holiday season has passed. Bringing in the New Year is all that remains. It’s the morning after Christmas which is always a peaceful thing. Children are sound asleep after a day of excitement. Parents are asleep from a month of sheer exhaustion.

I have the night off but I’m usually up at this hour (2 am) in the morning so it’s no big thing. It’s kind of peaceful and quiet. I’m reflecting on some of the personal gifts I got this year from my children and grandchildren and smiling.

How I feel this morning. Photo by Mike Hartley

All of them are such gifts themselves, but they touched our hearts again as usual. Thoughtfulness is shown through the things they give. Making my better half cry seems to be their goal each year, and they succeeded again.

It was one of those family days I stored deep in me that I call on throughout the year if I can’t see them as often as I like to remind myself that they are right here in my heart and that the next time together is close at hand.

Two of the gifts I received reflect one of my future interests. I’m going to become a reader of books. Not that I haven’t been a very active reader in my lifetime. Most of it was geared towards work (technical) and news and magazine-style pieces.

The time to sit down with a good book for enjoyment was nill. But now I hope to read for enjoyment about the interest of mine and maybe beyond. Maybe I’ll add to what is probably a gazillion opinions on books I’ve read.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • In some ways, I miss a white Christmas but I’m glad my children didn’t have to travel in it.
  • Every once in a while I like listening to some very old tunes my parents liked. Especially this time of season.
  • I don’t often fall asleep at the computer but I did this morning. Feeling better after a nap now.
  • My last trip to the downtown office this week while still employed.

Merry Christmas

A quiet and peaceful morning. And a beautiful one indeed. People resting up for the day’s activities and joy. I’m on my last few hours of work and took a quick break to wander upstairs and peak at what Santa delivered. Thankfully I married one of his best helpers.

And all through the house nothing was stirring except Me. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve finished wrapping and I’m ready to catch a nap before the company arrives. So till later this evening, everyone have a great and joyous day.

Excitement builds

We are on Christmas Eve and I’m both joyous and sad. Joyous about my situation but sad about so many others. Ones who can’t celebrate because of war or poor health or just unable to do what they want for family and friends. As I sit here while my better half is fixing me a breakfast I think I’ll spend a minute donating to the Maryland Food Bank so some can at least have a meal.

This is kind of a special holiday for me. The time together with friends and family once again. Even though I work Christmas Eve into Christmas morning at 6 am, I’m off on Christmas night. This will be the first of all holidays to come when I don’t have to work.

When you work a lot of holidays in your career it takes a toll on you. Even attending after working all night I was kind of half there and wasn’t able to fully enjoy things because I knew I had to work all night that evening also. But moving forward that won’t be the case and that makes me smile.

My hat is off to all those who because of the role they fill end up working holidays. I hope it isn’t taken for granted but I know it can be and often is. People just expect 24/7/365 which means a lot of important jobs are staffed with people missing holidays.

I fondly remember a company in my early years that on Thanksgiving and Christmas would provide us with Turkey dinners with all the trimmings. It was a wonderful jester and much appreciated by myself and others working but didn’t last. But I would say most years have gone by without as much as a thank you. And to be honest, that kind of stung.

But that is water under the bridge and like I said, moving forward I can be part of celebrations, not have to leave early or show up late or be exhausted. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn into the life of the party.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m on a roll lately getting things done. Wish I could bottle whatever it is driving me.
  • I hope I can maintain some responsible eating in the coming week.
  • Many things will be behind me after this coming week.
  • Endurance – how long can you leave a fresh half-gallon of ice cream unopened?

Tough time

I’ve tried repeatedly, but I can’t get someone important to come out this year for Christmas. She is depressed and just can’t bring herself to celebrate much if at all. I’ve been trying with repeated calls and texts but to no avail. I’ve left the door open and will probably make another last-minute plea tomorrow, but I doubt it will change.

Very few have gotten by in life without significant losses in life. Those are especially hard to cope with this time of year. The passing of loved ones during this time changes holidays, sometimes for good. But sometimes those losses are so deep that no day or holiday going forward can change the pain.

Losing a child is a pain that I’ve now seen in someone close. It’s a pain that even when that person seems fine, you feel the disturbance, you sense the distress, you feel the unease. When they are suffering the pain spreads an aura around them and encircles those close.

One relative who I was with at a funeral service this week who had also lost a child had to leave funeral services for an Uncle because the pain came rushing back. She was able to rejoin after for a luncheon but I’m sure there have been more times where that might have triggered days more pain and possibly still does.

But like I said, most have had losses, mine have brought me to tears already a few times. Good chance I might shed a few more tomorrow night because I’m missing family.

A time of year things can spiral out of control. Photo by Mike Hartley

So if you can spare the time, reach out to someone you know who might be having a difficult time. It might not turn their holiday around. But those few minutes you may spend talking or having a bite or just texting back and forth might give them a few minutes of peace and relief from pain. And if enough of us reach out they might even get a peaceful night’s rest. I know this is the hardest time of year to spare time. But it’s imperative to help those suffering from depression, especially at this time of year.

Be supportive to all not just at holiday time but throughout the year.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When I hang some Xmas decorations on the tree they cause me to pause and remember.
  • I’ve worked many Christmas Eve’s. Tomorrow will be the last.
  • A wonderful breakfast is ahead tomorrow.
  • I’m feeling at peace for a change this evening.
  • I had an old favorite of mine tonight at dinner. A Monte Cristo sandwich.

Looking

I love it when I have a camera in my hands. It triggers this instinct to LOOK at everything. My head is on a swivel from side to side and up and down. I’ve been known to do 360s walking down the street not to miss something I’ve passed at a different angle. I guess I should be careful doing too many of those at my age.

It’s an old sunny day shot of Old Ellicott City. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve been quite lazy in picking the cameras up recently. That will change this weekend. I’m going to try some experimental stuff this evening. Tomorrow I hope to venture out early in the morning and get a few night shots before what is predicted to be a cloudy sunrise if any.

I like painting the town with my camera. But I will attempt to turn my images into some pastel works this year. Photo by Mike Hartley

Then shopping for stocking stuffers and home before most will step out of bed. Some final decorating touches inside and out to wow the grandchildren. A nice meal with my better half, a few chores, and then a good night’s rest to get ready for a long Sunday/Monday.

Let the Holiday Season ROCK.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m excited about cooking more this coming year.
  • My better half said she asked the cashier at the grocery store how it was going. She said the same Christmas song had been stuck on a loop all day long so far. I’m guessing whatever the song is, that it will be barred at all events she attends in the future.
  • My friend gave me a nice bar of Toblerone chocolate last night, I had one piece. I have been doing so well with snacks and treats that I thought I could do the same with this. I was wrong. I’m down to the last 1/4 of the bar. So much for discipline, I’ll have to pass on a meal soon.
  • I need two computer screens. One on my desk and another one upstairs so when I get there I can remind myself what I came up for.
  • Last year UCLA came to Maryland and blew them out of the gym. This year in a few minutes we go to UCLA and I hope the Terps return the favor and run them out. Of course, our team looks worse than last year so far. I’m hoping for the turnaround tonight.

Flow

I’m in a nice flow again. I have a great plan for the day ahead and positive energy to complete it all. It’s ambitious but doable. And I’m off to an early start. Several tasks were knocked out before 8 am. I had my sleep for the morning (3 hours) and now I’m off for the day’s adventures.

Some shopping has been completed and now it’s time for some fun and relaxation. I’ll unplug for a while. Share some laughter and then back to my solitude. I sense a late night ahead.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The song Behind Blue Eyes stirs the same thoughts it did many decades ago.
  • A goal for next year. Don’t let tailgaters bother me. This is a big ask.
  • Every once in a while, I forget. But just like clockwork, someone is there to remind me.
  • Stick shifts can cure most attitude problems.

Dancing December

I didn’t anticipate ending one career in December and starting another but here we are. The last few months flew by and I’m on my last handful of days of work. I’d like to say I see the workplace better than I found it when I entered the workforce well over 5 decades ago, but I can’t.

Two things that popped to mind are trust and respect. Both have eroded from both sides. And trust and respect are the foundation of any relationship. Without those being practiced, all you have is a tentative day-to-day partnership.

Companies like to say they are being transparent. I call BS on that one. But employees aren’t without fault, for not making their case stronger or taking action to change it.

Luckily I’ll be down to a company of one soon. We (me, myself, and I) communicate like a well-oiled machine. We share visions and goals. We work hard and reward such. We encourage, teach, and share expectations. We never think we know everything. We learn, adapt, and change because we trust and respect.

Remember, it’s not the company you work for, it’s the people and the decisions they make. Be it a manager, director, VP, or owner.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Almost time to savor a special time.
  • I’ve started a book of poems because I went with a feeling.
  • Long hugs give the right messages.
  • I just thought of a new goal for next year. To get up and dance to at least one song a day.

Road trip

I haven’t done 6 hours of driving in a day in a while now. Nice to know it’s still a fairly easy task. And the Baltimore beltway up I-95 to Philly is no piece of cake this time of the season. Semi Controlled Chaos at best.

It had been a while taking that route and the speeds seem to have increased a good bit. No, the state hasn’t raised the speed limit, but someone got the message out to the general public that the Indy 500 is now a street race and everyone is invited to participate. Anyway safely up and safely back.

It’s a simple wheel for a simple time. No cruise control here because that isn’t driving. Photo by Mike Hartley

Unfortunately, the trip was for services for my wife’s Aunt who we were close with. The day left me feeling uneasy, uncomfortable, and in a bit of a panic, I saw her husband and the obvious void in his heart and the thought that I might face that someday. I can agree that losing a child has got to be the most painful experience possible but losing your lifelong partner has to be next in line.

Try to enjoy the simple things of the season. The smell of the live Christmas tree. The scents of special dishes everyone cooks and brings to the tables. The sounds of joy and laughter from both young and old. Most will have a short break from the job, be it a day or more.

Step outside, feel that cold brisk air and take a very deep breath to get it in your lungs. If you’re in a colder climate either make a snowball and throw it or dive into a pile of powder fresh snow, no matter how old you are.

If you’re healthy give thanks you haven’t caught any of the numerous bugs and viruses multiplying like rabbits. And of course, acknowledge you have been lucky enough to knock out another year on the calendar.

While sitting in holiday traffic smile and nod to the people stuck in line with you. Hold a door for someone with their hands full of bags. Find it in your heart to help someone less fortunate with some jester of kindness.

When I have to shovel snow 2-3 times a year, I think that it’s not every week like cutting the grass 8 months a year. So that way I’m in a good mood and build a snowman when I’m done.

Whatever it is that helps you find the spirit of the season, get to it and feel better.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve let too many things get in the way of production.
  • Even the strongest families are holding on by a thread? That is what makes them the strongest. They continue to hold on and try.
  • Why watch College Football Bowl games when it seems all the best players who are either transferring or going pro are deciding not to play?

Windblown Monday

What a busy start to the week. I hope those 40-50 mph wind gusts will be behind me today instead of a headwind. We did lose power for a short bit around 4 am and I hope that isn’t a warning for more to come.

As has been the case this year surrounding areas either north or south of us seemed to get hit harder. We have been in a sweet spot this year.

When you get a serious expression of thanks and gratitude for a gift, so much so that you know you made a difference in the person’s day and maybe beyond that, it’s a nice feeling

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Powering through physical pain has its limits. So says pain.
  • I miss my parents a lot this holiday season. I always do each year but more memories seem to be flooding back this year.
  • We are fast approaching my least favorite day of the year. The first day of Winter
  • If you listen to fearmongers all day the likelihood of you being fearful is high.
  • We are a third-world country now because we forgot how to get along together.

Home stretch

A week till Christmas Eve and I’m hoping to be ready and able to relax and enjoy Christmas Day. I love time with the family and that day is so special. I’m not sure if I’m working that night or not yet but it doesn’t matter because I’ll be at peace if everyone is happy and healthy. And with the young ones, they will be crashing before I have to sign on for my last working holiday.

But first, a nasty storm moving up the coast to entertain us this evening and tomorrow morning. 2-3 inches of rain, maybe more, in a fairly short timeframe along with high winds. Might be a test for those new catch ponds protecting Old Ellicott City.

Yesterday was National Wreaths Across America Laying Day. This shot below is from Arlington National Cemetery from a few years ago. I need to get over and visit my parent there before the end of the year. That is one donation I have made for years running but I’m a little late with that this year. But as they say better late than never.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Having a family funeral within a week of Christmas will remind us all how special each one is and how thankful we should be for having another one together.
  • If you want a mentor with a lifetime of experience, visit a senior center.
  • Sometimes you may feel like you’re the only one going through a problem when in reality there may be millions with the same issues.
  • I feel like my schedule is so packed and difficult. And then I see the schedule of my better half and I feel a little better.

Hang on

I’ve attached my rope to a new part of life and we are about to launch. I’m so thankful to have made it this far. It’s a strange feeling indeed. Like entering high school on the first day or the first day at a new job. A sense of unknown experiences, unexplored places and events, learning new things, and with my lifelong better half to enjoy the journey.

Hold on. Photo by Mike Hartley

I also have high hopes to learn if there is some buried artistic talent deep down inside me that is dying to get out. I picked up charcoal and pastel paper yesterday to get busy from the jump. I’ve got my studio lights and tripods out. The new backup drive for the new computer system will be attached later today. Getting the foundation for production.

Each day progress on working that itch that has laid dormant for decades.

Top Down Day

Countdown to 50s. It’s going to be in the mid-50 degree range today and that is a treat for mid-December so the call is for a ride with the top down. Yeah, that’s way too cold for my better half so I’ll have to take a short ride by myself before we run a few errands together.

Long live the convertible.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Wow, just read that – A Charlie Brown Christmas is 58 years old. I enjoy it as much today as I did when I first saw it.
  • Blades of grass blowing in the wind can entertain me. But I’d rather watch grains of sand blow on the beach while I’m face down on my blanket on a sunny day.
  • I miss my cat trying to climb inside the Christmas tree.
  • Aerosmith took the title of my new status next year. PERMANENT VACATION

Pants

I needed pants today. Well, we all need pants but the sweatsuits I’ve been wearing won’t do it for a few more formal events coming up. And my former wardrobe kind of falls off me now, so to the Mall we went. I hadn’t been here in ages. We found my pants in short order and proceeded to lunch and a little more shopping and walking.

One shot caught my eye. It’s the one where 4 people are sitting on that round carpet in one of the center rest areas. 3 of them are on their smartphones looking inward, heads down. The one gentleman on the left has a book and is facing outward. As I was walking up to the group I noticed him raise his eyes and look around a little, smile, and then resume reading.

And finally an epic battle of wills. We both managed to walk into the sweet shop Lolli and Pops and walk out without getting anything. OK, I paused at least a dozen times before walking out but I made it.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Sometimes I amaze myself by just trying harder.
  • Lots of people will probably tell me what I should be in a rush to do when I retire. Good thing there is a new sheriff in town and I make decisions like that.
  • I saw far too many people walk by the guy at the Salvation Army Red Pot, and pass right by him and his ringing bell at Long Gate today. I feel like going back and asking him what percentage of people pull out some change or a few bucks. I’m kind of afraid though of being disappointed in the answer.
  • I found some more wall space, therefore I need to make some more prints tonight.

Peaceful mornings

Mornings should be peaceful. And they usually are in the hours I’m up experiencing them. When I’m on vacation I found my normal rising time somewhere between 4-5 am in the mornings. That is a quiet and peaceful time.

Must be a good spot at Centennial Lake. Photo by Mike Hartley

My better half likes to sleep in so if I’m up and at work early at that 4-5 am hour, I won’t be taking away our together time. After that, the schedule is yet to be developed but I do like to start the day with as little chaos and as peacefully as possible.

There is a good chance I might even incorporate a mid-day nap if I’m staying up late doing evening shooting or out with the boys. I’ve read that a regular sleep schedule is good for the body and especially the mind. After decades of not having one, I think I can confirm that statement is true. I feel like I’ve taken years off my life working such an abnormal schedule.

So I hope it’s not too late to change that feeling and pattern for the better. At least we will finish the right way.

Here we go

One thing I know about publishing is consistency works. I’ve been anything but consistent when I publish posts. I’m all over the clock because of my crazy schedule now.

So starting in 2024 I will try doing morning and evening posts daily. And roughly the same timeframe each day in addition to trying to find the sweet spot in people’s viewing times but also so they know when my posts are regularly published.

Plus it will get me on a schedule of production and up and out the door each day my better half and I are healthy. But I’m a person that when an idea strikes I don’t like waiting on it so I’ll give it my best shot now for the two weeks remaining this year while I’m still working full time.

Which means I have a lot of work to do in the middle of the holiday season. So as the plate below says.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hope that I’m too busy living experiences instead of sitting around telling people about past ones.
  • If the music you’re listening to doesn’t move your shoulders and hips, you should find another tune.
  • If I could tell my younger self something important it would be to have more confidence in myself. Not that I’m not still working on it at this advanced age.
  • Having close friends over lifetimes is like making great music together.

Lead – Follow

A long time ago when I was young and I managed even younger people, teaching them skills and crafts, I tried to also teach them about work and life. And how they were not only responsible to me but I was responsible and accountable to them.

I would give the example that as a manager I could have a great plan, I could sell it to superiors but if I didn’t have the belief and support and hard work of the people that were to execute it, the likelihood of success was greatly reduced. And even if it was a success and I was given credit and didn’t share it then no matter what the next great idea is, it’s doomed.

A strong leader will walk out front knowing they have the support of the staff behind them and the staff knows the leader is up forging a path for the rest to meet their goals and be successful.

I presented an environment in which we were both tied together to success and failure. That credit would be shared as a team as well as rewards. Visions like this have had mixed support from above and that is one reason of a few reasons I’ve stayed away from management.

Sometimes the real leader is within the group and not the manager. Or the manager is the leader and their boss is just the figurehead nobody believes in. I’ve worked in a couple of situations where lead technicians/admins are so far technically advanced over the manager or even their bosses that the staff knows who runs things. So if they see management not listening or working strongly with them, the results from the others will suffer when it goes into an us and them situation.

When they work as a team great things happen and I’ve seen that also first hand. That blending and appreciation for each other’s skills and what they bring to the table, the give and take that is needed from time to time, the actual support and standing behind one another when stuff hits the wall as it occasionally does. And of course, no finger-pointing. These are the groups having fun as well as succeeding.

A great morning ahead because my workweek is over and my weekend has begun.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m going to have to enlist the help of my better half in purging some of the things in our basement. She is more ruthless than me in those things. But I’m wise enough to know it needs a heavier hand than mine.
  • The pleasure of photographing sunrises and sunsets is being there.
  • If someone hits me and blames it on the autopilot, it won’t be the autopilot I’m tempted to hit.
  • Making something is important. Doing work here in the online world is making something but I need something to hold onto and exhibit other than a computer or phone screen and that is why I make prints of my photos.

Shiver

It’s that time of year again. Do you shiver in the car, waiting for it to warm up, or go back inside? I guess it depends on where you live and your tolerance for cold. I used to always wait in the car when I was younger. As I aged, I would come inside for a few moments on the coldest days. And up until a few years back, I was always coming inside.

However, a luxury item I never had in a car before my Miata is Heated Seats. Oh yeah, that’s a game-changer. They are almost instantaneous in responding which makes it possible to just stay in the car when it warms. Then again, I think I might hibernate and leave the cover on it till it warms up enough to head to the ocean.

  • Too much change too fast to recently.

Charged

Wow, the weekend felt like a setback for me. I couldn’t continue my work with all the other pressing tasks. Thankfully those are winding down and I can return to a few minutes a day here scratching my creative itch.

So I’m starting this V8 in the cold so it might take a minute or two or 10 to warm up all the cylinders.

As I stepped outside for a quick break from the job that pays the bills last night I saw a light coating of snow on our small estate in central Maryland. I like the word “estate”, I’ve always been proud of keeping my property looking good. Now I don’t have a real “estate”, those are all around me but not me.

So many mansions, it’s scary. I look at these places and just shake my head and wonder who needs that much. To put things in perspective, I saw in US News and World Reports that Howard County ranked 7th richest county in the country in 2023.

Sometimes a vehicle or two in the driveway of these places are worth more than I’ve accumulated in a lifetime. Not expressing sour grapes it just screams of the disparity we have in the world. I’ve learned over time that being happy with your lot in life contributes to a happy life. I’m not saying don’t try hard to improve yourself, just don’t measure yourself by the wants and needs of those more fortunate or greedy.

I’m very pleased with our humble abode. Would it be nice to have a beach place as some of our friends do, maybe. I see the tasks of keeping up with two homes. And at this age, I don’t want debt. I want to have some fun.

I feel very fortunate in life. I’ve been able to stay gainfully employed, raise two children and some pets, and after cutting my yard on a warm summer day, I look at the front of the small brick rancher and say yeah, that’s really nice. Just like I felt the day we pulled up to it the first time. Excited that could be mine and now is.

Someone, please remind me how happy I am now when I’m complaining about having to replace my heat and A/C systems in the next year or two.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Life is a lot easier with a great partner.
  • A new year ahead. But a start far different than any past year in my life.
  • Growing in knowledge is growing in life.
  • Make sure to help others as you help yourself.
  • I’ve met a ton of very smart people. Sometimes the penalty for that is a lack of common sense.

Out of time

I’m under the gun to get a ton of things done in short order here before the end of the year. So time today was limited to create. And what I did I was unhappy with so I just started over at this late hour. Maybe I’ll step outside early in the morning and catch a bit of the snow if it starts around 1 am as predicted.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I miss someone close.
  • Not a fan of winter winds outside as I step inside this evening.
  • I’m going to have to invest in a better office chair.
  • Being I won’t be doing any goals for the job that pays the bills next year I think I’ll get to work on my list.
  • It will be nice to see the sun again.
  • Go with your gut instinct.

Team Meetings

There is a coming change to all my meetings. I’ll be collaborating with a whole new team of people next year for my professional and personal pursuits. The teams of my professional life of the last two and half decades will be replaced with many new ones.

Meet this. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll be joining photo groups and interacting with other artists in hopes of learning and expanding my view of what I can do. I’ll be using old publishing friends who have also retired to critique work, share ideas with, and get feedback.

A few months back an old coworker and special friend talked about working on a project from our past together. We both had setbacks since that meeting but I hope to rekindle that energy and work together.

I’ll be meeting with my better half and children more. I’ll be meeting with friends more often and hosting more events here for them.

A financial team to guide us through our senior years. And of course medical teams. I’m not sure I want to meet often or more new ones of them anytime soon.

I might reach out and expand my team of neighbors. Some old ones we know are moving soon and some new ones we haven’t met with much. I’ll be trying to do some charity work so that will be another team.

Of course, I’d love to expand my online team of new friends and share with more people.

I was never a big fan of meetings but the kind that I can have now leave me looking forward to them.

It looks like I’ll have no trouble filling the void of time the work-life is leaving me to use.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Friendships are wonderful. Long-term meaningful ones are a gift to the soul.
  • Buckle up East Coast, time for a weather ride.
  • I love working on my father’s old desk. It’s a bit small and not made for computers but those things don’t matter at all. One of these days I’ll get it sanded and refinished again and hope that one of my children will take it in the future.
  • I love inspirational music.

Infamy

December 7th. My parents would be disappointed if I didn’t try to carry the significance of this day in history. Uncle Frank was on the deck of the West Virginia at Pearl Harbor and then served on a heavy cruiser. My father joined the Navy the year before Pearl and served on a Destroyer in the Pacific and also in the Korean War. Uncle Bob flew B-17s over Europe in WWII.

Thanks, Mom and Dad, and to all of your generation. Photo by Shirley Hartley

I don’t just remember members of this generation on this day, but all who have served to protect many freedoms we take for granted today. Ones that people gave their lives to protect. As the saying goes, “those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it.”

Let’s remember what we were fighting against and what we stand for. Hopefully, it will help us make good choices for our elected officials to avoid those past tragedies.

Freedoms are just as much in jeopardy today as they were then. Just watch out for the direction of the threat.

Nosey

I love how dogs communicate with facial expressions. I think my Sons dog has a bit of a herding breed in her. She seems to use her nose to direct people. She also likes to put it against you if she is resting. But her main use is for food. She would be an elephant if not for her parents restraint.

This was shot a while back but I’m guessing she has this expression now. She is recovering from some surgery so she isn’t the happiest of campers yet.

I like how she furrows her brow when she is concerned like above. And then relaxes like below.

Writing

I’m no professional writer. Might never get close to being one but that won’t deter me. I didn’t even know I liked writing till I started blogging about a decade ago. I didn’t start off thinking I’d write much in this blog because it was for my photography.

Writing has turned into a joy and I hope to get much better now that I can devote some time and energy into it. In the past I’ve done a few poems for friends, humorous stuff. I’ve written a few touching things for special occasions.

And now I want to do a lot of it. I have no idea if I can accomplish it or will be satisfied with it but I’m going to try my hand at a few books.

The most important writing I do is to my children and that is often in the forms of almost daily emails.

But there is this itch to do something new in life. To make an impact. To help others and myself at the same time. So off I go to make the best use of this day and every one forward.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My hats off to Mr. Norman Lear. You helped change the world through laughter. RIP.
  • When I retire soon I worry about not being exposed to the young people at work who secretly challenge me to keep up with things and also their views and observations.
  • I love the thought of having the time to read more soon.
  • I didn’t realize the comfort I was giving up working on laptops the last few years till I got a nice desktop unit. These old eyes need screen real estate.
  • I slept 6 hours this morning. I haven’t slept 6 hours in a long while. It’s a nice feeling. The hair on my neck tingles at the thought of 7-8 hours.
  • My Mother could decorate the most beautiful Christmas trees I’ve ever seen.
  • We are all responsible for the demise of sports as one of the great things in life. Money has changed every level of it now and taken away many of the most special things about it.

Church

I like the architecture of churches in the area. It’s another project I hope to start documenting this coming year. No specific focus on any religion, just the buildings that some still worship in. Some of the architecture is very interesting.

I guess that quick shoot at St Anthony’s off Folly Quarter and the buildings there really inspired me to do more.

I’m also sitting here thinking given the state of things that taking pictures with that Nikon with the big zoom on it might attract negative attention. So I might use the cell phone on this task more. Hopefully, I might run into some nice people along the way. But also prepared for the extremists and paranoid.

United Methodist Church along Bethany Lane. Photo by Mike Hartley

Too bad we can’t talk about religion. Seems to be both a source of salvation and pain at the same time. Wars are being fought in the name of religion. Abortion and pedophile priest discussions could incite riots.

Tolerance for different religions seems to be at an all-time low. I believe the trend in young people away from religion has grown and continues. My views and practices have changed greatly over the decades.

Money and religion – it’s so intricately linked that some churches are all about the almighty $ instead of their almighty.

I have a best friend who is an atheist, I have another best friend who has strong beliefs, and his son-in-law is a preacher. I probably fall in between them. We all get along great and always have. Mainly because we respect each other first and respect that we have different views. But the most common thing is that we carry ourselves a lot alike in terms of our devotion to people, compassion, love, empathy, support, charity, and hope.

On the other hand, I’ve been told that because I don’t believe as someone else I’m going to hell. Actually, by someone I’d known for decades. Their belief structure changed over time and somehow I was now judged by far different criteria than in our past relationship.

I’ve gone to many beginning and end-of-life services. In many different churches and beliefs. In them, I have celebrated and grieved with many different people. We come together no matter our background at these times. Why can’t we continue it in our day-to-day lives?

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s good to have a team in life.
  • I find myself more in the holiday spirit than in previous years.
  • Medicare is complicated.
  • Writing and meaningful writing are two different things.
  • The problem is not the government. It’s who we are electing to execute it.

End/Begin

It’s now official, I got my signed separation papers late yesterday from The Washington Post, and that long-term ride will come to an end soon. It’s been a very interesting experience. One I’ll probably spend some time on in future posts but it’s time to savor the last few weeks in Newspaper Publishing.

As one ride stops, look for another one to get on. Photo by Mike Hartley

In some ways, I’m so excited I could run through a wall. In others, a relaxing wave comes over me, I might just sleep the first few days. Or I could be a nervous wreck with so much unused energy that I’ll drive those around me crazy.

Between now and then I have lots to do and finalize. Many people to thank and wish well. I guess our house is in order as well as it’s ever going to be. And next year begins what I hope is a great chapter in our lives.

Control

This is an interesting feeling. I’ll again have more control over my life and time for the first time since I was a young teenager. Flexibility on when to rise and crash. Time to play sports or someone to yell “Road Trip” or relax with friends at someone’s home and enjoy a meal.

The ability to look at my better half and suggest a long or short trip and not worry about the work awaiting me when I get back or the interruptions while on vacation from work. Or to just lay in a hammock side by side knowing that we don’t have to move to have a meal at a specific time to allow me to get to work on time.

Returning to my first career love (Arts) and the opportunity to practice those crafts and not starve myself or my family at the same time.

Resuming my physical fitness. The last time I was in really good shape was in my teens and maybe early 20s. But I’m closer to that now than I’ve ever been in decades and while I have some work to do I’m on that path to good fitness and hopefully health.

It’s almost like starting over again. Like being fresh out of high school and having all the options in front of you, and I have a large family and a network of great friends to enjoy it with.

One of the lines in an old song from Rush album 2112 that I like is “We have assumed Control.” That “we”, is my better half and I. Then again I hear control is an illusion.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I didn’t make much progress overnight, but I did have some fun.
  • Space heater, my winter survival tool.
  • I guess it is kind of ironic that the first call I got to schedule something after my retirement date was from the doctor’s scheduling person for my colonoscopy appointment.
  • It felt good to pick up the cameras again yesterday.
  • Only when you’re short on time do you realize you haven’t made the best use of time along the way.

Explore

I’m looking forward to having the time to explore. Instead of swinging by and getting out and taking a quick shot on a Sunday morning while out for a short drive, I’ll have the time to visit and learn about stores and places in our area like the spot below called the Pink Cabbage in a short time.

Spots with natural or rustic beauty. New and old. Maybe homes that exude feeling or style. I’ve always wanted to document the places of worship around the area. Some are very unique.

I have a ton of ideas I’m going to add to this thing I do here. Not sure what will stick but the wall will be covered.

This morning

As I looked at the bright orange morning sky over my neighbor’s home when I went out to unplug the Xmas lights, I recall the tricks I used to play on myself. Working nights this is really, my sunset. At this time of year, this is what I see when I crash for a few hours. You tell your mind what you need to survive. I’ll be dropping this illusion shortly.

Down to 13 and 1/2 nights to go. Maybe one less, I don’t feel like working Christmas this year and it is my partner’s turn but he just got engaged and he’s got to go out and get another job so maybe I’ll gift him this. I’ve worked so many holidays over my career that 2024 is going to be a special year of appreciation on those dates. And hopefully for many years beyond that.

Kind of fitting that New Year’s Day will be my first holiday off. A great start to 2024.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hope to accomplish something special in retirement. I’m going to both speed up and slow down.
  • I have no problem putting my car cover on or taking it off. But a garage would be nice.
  • I’m going to adjust my driving time to avoid as many people as possible. Too many crazy’s out there.
  • Those with weak minds allow reality to be bent.
  • There is a snowball up the street calling my name. I must respond when they open.

Upstream

I’m trying to walk upstream and can’t get airborne today. Hopefully, Tuesday will be different. It’s not that I didn’t work hard today. It’s not that there are accomplishments. Just not the ones I would also like to pepper the week with.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Alone isn’t just the lack of presence of others.
  • Create for yourself, then you are guaranteed at least someone like it.
  • At least when I talk to myself I get a response.
  • I’m not sure if what I do can be called sleep. More like a short series of 1-2 naps.
  • Tomorrow is going to be a great day.

Overflow

I’m feeling flooded with thoughts. Way too many and all of them are very important. I haven’t had this level of change in a while. And all of them are happening in a very condensed window. Some major ones weren’t even planned. I feel like I need an umbrella in my head.

That’s okay though because I’ll step up and meet the challenges. For a short bit I felt like I hadn’t accomplished a lot recently but each day I find myself taking more and more stuff off the daily list. Sometimes when I get so busy doing and there is so much still to do I kind of lose perspective.

It’s good to at least pause and reflect for a pep talk or take some satisfaction in the jobs accomplished.

Do you ever start the workweek with the tank on empty? I feel that is the way the week is beginning for me. But as we all do we suck it up and move forward. I guess when I retire I can lose this week-at-a-time mindset.

I adopted that during a difficult period on the job and I guess it just stuck because I had to have a goal of a weekend and family/friends time. Along with the chore list but it wasn’t work for someone else. Weekends were salvation. Yes, work would intrude upon them often but I was a more effective animal trainer on the weekend in holding down the hours than the weekdays.

Come January 1st my tank will be on full all the time. I think each day will take on more significance in 2024 and beyond. Because it’s no longer a workweek next year.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was on a roll on the treadmill but my knee started to send me messages so I gave the legs a break yesterday. It’s good to listen to your body.
  • I realized why my knee hurt, I was crawling around the floor picking up toys. But as a loving grandparent, I’ll never complain about that task. I’d crawl to the ends of the earth for those kids.
  • Education is so important throughout one’s whole life. I’ve been a little lazy the last year or two but I can feel myself picking up the pace again. And it’s exciting.
  • Tiss the season to chop wood. Nah, I’ll just order a cord.

Start me up

I did my good deed yesterday. I’ll just say I was being neighborly. Now back to my own activities. I’ve got to find a power grid to plug into because this kid is beat and I got 3 straight days of long hours ahead. Then again I should look inward.

I’m finding that creative spark adds a lot of energy. I found positive thoughts can power me though a lot of time. I’ve always been aware of appreciation and that also makes the body and mind happy and sound.

Ah to be young again. I may be young in mind but the body reminds me those days have passed. That is ok because we make due and still am probably more active than most people my age. And I’m getting more active by the day. Before long I’ll be long jumping like the little one below.

The day is filling up with obligations fast but I’m going to squeeze in a few minutes of fun and shooting I hope. And who knows, maybe another good deed.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Do a few things, then do a few more things.
  • Don’t just look around, make sure you are seeing.
  • I believe an early morning ride is in order.
  • The most dangerous thing about the times we live in is all the different realities people see.
