Photo work

Today is a indoor photography today. I thought I’d work on textures and objects.

Photography Journey Day 69 Recap – 1/8/25

Completed a lot more on Wednesday than I thought I would.

  • Completed family Xmas prints and uploaded those and more to photo site.
  • Read all 18 quick tip articles on Street Photography.
  • Read some more of the Photography Playbook
  • Watched some videos on lighting.
  • Sorted a few hundred slides.

Photography Journey Day 70 Recap – 1/9/25

Thursdays accomplishments were more limited. I took a few snow shots and did some more reading. Only uploaded about 30 shots to Zenfolio and did some organizing there. Still tons of work ahead to make that site presentable.

This weather is affecting my motivation to get outside. Right now, I saw the feel like temp at -3 degrees. That is dangerous cold for exposed skin and for older people it can be a struggle just to be out in it. I stepped outside yesterday morning and I think it was -10 at the time to take the shot below.

It’s a very busy day ahead. Paying final respects to an old friend, and providing transportation to a few others who wanted to come along. I’m thinking, I’d like some BBQ from our local spot called The Canopy today.

Let me get this posted and to work. I guess I should charge the camera batteries before thinking of more shooting. Have a great morning.

Light it up

Being our family celebration is postponed I had some time to PLAN.

For 2025 I hope to take many steps here and elsewhere in my life to improve. I hope to work much harder at ideas I’ve been flushing out and execute them.

A few of the words I’m thinking I need to incorporate into my 2025 plans.

Risks” – It’s time to take some more risks here and in life.

Schedule” – I’m hoping it will help me with both production, quality, consistency and enjoyment in this and other endeavors like my exercise.

Love” – The coming addition to the family will certainly need me to turn up the Papa Factor. I also have to spread some love to the local pet shelter. And do a better job with my better half and children.

PowerHouse” – No, not the energy bar. I’m going to turn next year into taking care of some needs of our humble abode. I have more than a dozen listed so far that are very significant projects that I’d like to complete before June on the home and yard. Some I’ll have to hire out and others I’ll be attacking.

Sponge” – I want to get back to being a sponge for knowledge. I’ve gotten lazy and I need to stay even more challenged mentally as I age.

DayTripper” – Yep we are going to be out and about again this year. Hopefully even more than 2024 and we were more active than we had been in decades. So why not build on it.

Attitude” – No sense waiting for my health to fail. Time to run through those walls now before they leave a mark or prevent me from moving forward.

BeachBum” – I’m going to wear a path between Ocean City and my house this coming year.

History” I have to go through some more family history and learn. For instance, a few thousand slides. Also some old papers from my father.

Car and Driver” – I’m going to get a little more seat time this year and maybe do a modification or two. It’s going to need a new exhaust so that will be first this spring. Then maybe some handling mods. As the group Little Feat say, “Let it Roll”

Image” – In addition to publishing here daily I’m really going to build out my photo site and work on videos to add to the YouTube collection. My goal of daily shooting will begin today and not stop till I can’t hold a camera or see through the viewfinder.

Dust” – If I have my way I’ll be creating a lot of sawdust in 25. I’ve got to move that activity outside. It will save cleanup time.

I’m going to be a bolt of energy this coming year. Photo by Mike Hartley

Cold

Well I should expect the cold this time of year. And the location I live in does get a winter season. Not much of one in terms of snow but it can get cold. And 24 degrees as I write this last post of the day is a good reason to stay in this evening.

Photography Journey Day 52 – 12/22/24

I’m working hard and I’ll have something to show for it when completed but I’m going through all my old shoots for the last few decades and getting things sorted out, edited if needed and uploaded to the photo site.

Much work remains but I’m putting hours into it each day. Once finished I’ll get some trusted friends to review my galleries and do a little weeding.

Tomorrow night I’ll go out and get the tripod to get some steady holiday lights. Not this evening though, I’m done, the body has nothing left to give. The mind is active and having thoughts of heading outside. And while the mind is the key to unlock many things I haven’t seen it turn the ignition key yet.

The tree is complete. Well as complete as its going to be for this year except for some presents around it in a few days. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This is one of the longest stretches this year I haven’t seen my children. That will end this week.
  • I think a good nights sleep is in order.
  • Editing photos of summer in the winter is depressing.
  • Plans are nice, execution is better.

Plugging away

I’m giving up on normal sleep cycles. I just can’t get it together.

Photo Journey Day 49 recap – 12/19/24

Yesterday a concerted effort began to fill out and organize my photo site. I have several thousand images, and I want to get many more there before the end of the year. A lot more because I haven’t probably touched half the images I’d like to edit, upload, sort and organize.

A warm weather image being it’s snowing out here today. Photo by Mike Hartley

We are going to need to get away in January or February. I’m not sure if we will take a day or two at the beach or inland. But we are both feeling the need for a break.

Too chilly to walk that beach this morning. Plus I just checked the webcam and the sun isn’t up in Ocean City either. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel like making sausage gravy and biscuits.
  • If you haven’t noticed, society is starting to break down at normal activities.
  • Maybe we should vote to shut down Twitter, Tesla and Space X and see how that feels to Elon and his employees. Bet Republicans didn’t know they were voting for Musk to run the country. And poor JD he’s back to the rear seat of the car.
  • Pet’s are worth their weight in gold. And more in some cases.

Here’s looking at you

Crap, only a week before Xmas. I better go shopping. Oh good, my better half has it under control and wrapped. One of the many wonders she pulls off each year.

Photo Journey Day 48 – 12/18/24

I didn’t shoot much yesterday, or the day before. I’m getting slack again, or just busy also. It is the holiday season. So, I caught this squirrel outside the back door yesterday enjoying the warm weather.

They still are cute. They love all the nuts from my oak trees in the front yard. Photo by Mike Hartley

We took advantage of the warm weather to go get our live Christmas tree yesterday. Lights go on it today.

I had good intentions with the camera yesterday. I went out in the afternoon to gas up the go-cart and was going to shoot for an hour. But to be honest I got selfish. It was 61 degrees and sunny, so I put the top down and cruised for an hour or more. Just soaking up some sun and listening to music going through the gears.

So chalk one up to a lazy sunny day. You don’t get many of those in the Mid Atlantic in mid-December. And when you do, you see others touched by it on their motorcycles and convertibles with the tops down.

I’ll do another shot when decorated. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This transfer portal thing is injuring college sports. But it’s a mirror of society. The rich get richer. I’m not sure what happened to the word commitment, but it sure has changed.
  • I might not be able to reach out and touch a satellite spying on me, but my gun and aim are pretty good with skeet shooting, so a drone should be no problem. And if they come in volume, I have lots of friends who love to shoot skeet also.
  • Being a one-man band is time consuming and hard work. But it’s damn good to have a band.
  • It’s almost time to hibernate for a few months. The cover is on the Miata. It’s warm inside. I’m good.
  • I love the smell of a live tree. Well, used to be alive tree.

Great balls of fire

I hope your Sunday was a good one. I was less than 100% but I’m feeling good this Monday morning.

Photography Journey Day 45 recap- 12/15/24

Read a little more of the Photographers Handbook and got some ideas for this weeks shooting. I cranked up the printer and made several family prints. I tried some shots of the artificial tree in the basement but I didn’t like any of it. Charged all 3 batteries for a fresh start today.

Still deciding where to put this red string of balls up. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll have to see if I can get back on track today and do this daily instead of recaps. And to do that I need to get moving now.

I wasn’t feeling focused yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

Time got away

Chores Chores Chores – Worked hard yesterday, mostly out in the cold. And now I’m paying for it this Sunday morning and afternoon.

Photography Journey Day 44 recap – 12/14/24

It was an E Day. That means the day was spent in editing and education, when I wasn’t punching out other home tasks. So, I’ll have to reel in some outdoor ambitions today and see how creative I can get within the walls of my home.

Ready to Catch some new images. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The juvenile’s who carjacked an 81 year old woman in Baltimore were released to their parents. All had previous run ins with the law. My suggestion is release them to the families of the victims.
  • I’m appreciating the days of normalcy.
  • One of the things I love about blogging and the community is that it helps me be more positive.
  • You might not believe it now but there is a magnifying glass with your name on it in the future.
  • Bezos might be great at business but I don’t care for his ethics from my point of view. He had a chance to do something important at a time in history but passed.

Fruitless and Fruitful

One of those days I felt like I was spinning my wheels but in retrospect I did get a good bit accomplished. I’ll take days like that as a win.

Photography Journey – Day 43 Recap – 12/13/24

Yesterday was spent running errands and I still have more today but I did make good use of time at home by uploading about 400 new images to the photo site. There is so much work to be done there in organizing, labelling and maybe starting to use a watermark. So much I have yet to learn but the journey is the fun part.

As I was doing some editing, I found a few images that I might attempt to turn into some wood carvings.

A decent size buck appeared in the backyard in the afternoon. He pulled up a nice soft spot and caught a nap for a few hours. That time creating sawdust in the workroom finishing up a horse for my granddaughter kind of ate into my imaging goals.

The sun returns today so I’ll try to make the best use of it and get some better shots.

I left this guy alone for a long time before stepping out to my deck. Their hearing is amazing. I’ve learned to be quiet over the years but never enough for mother natures ears.

Seasonal

I get seasonal blues once in a while and I just haven’t been myself the last few days. I hope to snap out of it today. And then I went outside and all hope faded.

What a mess outside today. If it wasn’t falling on you, then you were stepping in it or both at the same time.

I felt like Gene Kelly today except I was cursing in the rain. Photo by Mike Hartley

That howling wind outside is already drying things off nicely. And the last two foggy mornings will be a thing of the past. Even with the sun tomorrow it won’t feel as warm as it did today by a wide margin. So, I’ll be smart and dressed for it.

100% moisture today. Photo by Mike Hartley

Photography Journey Day 40 Recap and Day 41 -12/11/24

There was progress yesterday morning, but the effort faded fast. I was able to upload another hundred or so shots and managed to get out of the house and take some fog shots. After that it was downhill. I managed a little editing last night before passing out.

Today I got a slow start but finished strong. I haven’t done much shooting today, but I’ve been an editing, uploading fool. I still have a few years backlog sort and edit, and then decide what to upload.

My goal later this evening is to go through a few hundred more slides from my parent’s collection and categorize them.

And I just turned the printer on in case I find something I like while editing. So I figure I have about 3 hours of good work left in me today which will take me to midnight. Then some rest.

Blooming ideas

It’s been a fairly creative day. Not especially on the photographic end but overall.

Photography Journey Day 39 – 12/9/24

I hope to get out later and take a few fog photos. I see some rolling in already and if it thickens up that might make for some interesting shots. In the meantime, I’ll upload some images to Zenfolio.

Some images were added to the family wall. Also, some editing on some recent shots and cleanup of some that should have been trashed on the first edit.

I should have taken a few photos in the attic while I was cleaning it out. I’ll add that to the very long list of things I should have shot. Laziness got a hold of me a bit the last few days in terms of my hobbies. I didn’t abandon them, just didn’t make the dedication I’d like to.

As long as I’m alive and kicking I’ll work to turn that back around. And work to make the village around me a better place. Have a good evening. all.

I don’t have to worry about the cat, but I do have to keep an eye on the grandkids. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a wrap

Well, if you measure by the week this one is about in the books. Some prep for the season and home maintenance. We’re cleaning out the attic and I hope to finish that job tomorrow. Worked on hanging a few strings of lights on the front porch.

Tomorrow I venture out for the area light displays. Photo by Mike Hartley

I also finished putting the tree together in the basement and got the lights on that. Tested 4 other strings of light and fixed 2 other strings of lights that had several out which put a smile on my face.

I believe my son made this item. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s almost time to break out the gift wrapping tools.

Photography Journey Day 37 recap and Day 38 – 12/8/24

I haven’t done the shooting I hoped for the last two days but I’ve got a good mental balance working again. I needed some rest and it’s a busy season getting ready for the holidays. I didn’t take advantage of the nice weather today, so I’ll venture out into the rain tomorrow.

I did get another shot for the family camera series. This is another oldie. Manufactured between 1949 and 1961 I give you the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera.

Ah, only 5 minutes to the start of a new week. Most dread Mondays. I now love them, as I do every day.

Capture Time

There are many reasons I love photography. But that aspect of capturing a point in time really is special.

Photography Journey Day 36 – 12/6/24

The sun was out, but I also heard that wind and stepping outside I felt very COLD. So to hell with that nonsense. Sorry, I know I should be out shooting but I have a severe dislike of this weather.

So, another series of shots is planned for another old camera later tonight. A Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model made between 1949 – 1961. Maybe I’ll shoot that other old Kodak and several Polaroids.

As I was doing some editing tonight, I ran across this street scene from Ellicott City. The location is in the photo. It’s not every day you can pull a rabbit (left) out of a photo.

Oh I’m longing for summer already and it’s still early December. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

The Canon printer has been humming along the last few days. And I hope to finish that pack of 8×10 off this evening.

More Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My mind says I could still run through a wall. Good thing the mind isn’t in total control anymore.
  • The best photo I’ve taken is the one I have yet to take. It could be tonight or tomorrow if I only pick up the camera.
  • Make someone happy and repeat.
  • One-man bands are better if they can play a lot of different instruments.
  • Speaking of bands, Aerosmith just doesn’t sound right unless the volume knob is at 10. Someone somewhere is asking “what is a volume knob”

Well as RUSH would say, it’s time to Roll The Bones.

Brownie

Ran a few errands and thought I’d take a few shots on the way home. Got out of the car once. The wind wanted to rip the door from my hand when I opened it, a gust just about knocked me over and the vest over the sweatsuit wasn’t enough for the temps for any amount of time. So back home and inside.

Photography Journey Day 34 Recap and Day 35 Update – 12/5/24

Spent yesterday sharing some photos work with some old friends who were visiting, doing backups, editing some videos.

The main effort today was uploading images to the photo site and editing some family shots for the holidays. Tomorrow I’ll start my holiday shooting to get this blog in the proper seasonal spirits. Till then some history.

Our first item is a vintage 1920s Eastman Kodak #2A Brownie Model C Box Camera. Made between 1924 and 1933. The oldest camera in the family collection. From my grandparents to ours.

Late Start

Waking at 5:30 am is late for me. But that was the starting gun for today.

Photography Journey Day 33 Recap – 12/3/24

Another busy day distracted me from my camera. Some errands and chores along with some woodworking but little in new imaging efforts on Tuesday.

I finished boxing up several hundred old prints. And actually, when I looked at the new prints I had made for a few projects I realized the day wasn’t a total loss. It just feels like it when I don’t get any new shooting in.

Oh, I also went through another 200 slides from my parent’s collection. I’m just starting on a box that is filled with 16 slide trays all packed with images. I’m starting to run into more images from my father’s trip on Operation Deep Freeze.

I really must finish that project because I know my kids won’t know the significance of some images. I’m going to have trouble with some. If I could match some of the images with my father’s journals from WW2 , Korea and his trips to the poles that might be something.

I should have retired earlier.

Todays Shiver

Regardless of the weather I’m still trying to get out and about. Even though every bit of my former common sense says stay inside, it’s too cold out. But today was about logistics and not hobbies.

Photography Journey Day 32 – 12/2/24

Kind of in a funk lately. Still managed to make some progress with some more prints for the basement walls. Did some much needed cleanup and a backup of some other work. Also worked on some illustrations.

But no new shooting. So here is a blast from the past till I get out tomorrow.

Cool it

A cool start to December but I hope to heat this month up.

Photography Journey Day 31 Recap – 12/1/24

I didn’t pick up a camera yesterday. Only a few snaps with the phone. It was kind of a personal and rest day. I think I saw the intro to Sunday Night Football and that is the last thing I remember. Both my mind and body checked out early.

Went to a Maryland basketball game yesterday with my son and 2 best friends. A quick trip to 3 Brothers in Greenbelt Plaza after the game and than a snowball on the way home with my son. We visited for a bit and then I edited about 30 images and uploaded the shots of my son’s family that he wanted.

So it wasn’t a productive day for new images but it was a great day for my spirit. Back to shooting today.

Yes it was cold. Most were purchasing hot chocolate, but we took the snowballs home and ate them in the warmth of the living room.

Partial Success

Partial success is better than no success. I finished one woodworking piece today instead of the two I hoped for. I did do some work on a pastel piece I started a while back that I didn’t plan on.

Photography Journey Day 30 – 11/30/24

I love black eyed susans. These were in Annapolis Maryland. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was able to add about a dozen prints to the family wall and a couple to my friends wall. Also made a few display prints for the Shore project. I stepped outside a few times but returned to the warmth of the house and inside activities.

A real chill in the air tonight so thought I’d run something a bit more summer like instead.

Recap

I just realized I was a few days behind on a few things. It’s a good weekend to catch up and get back in step.

Photography Journey Day 28 & 29 Recap – 11/29/24

I started this last night and fell asleep. New shooting has been limited but progress is good on the editing and uploading front.

Grazing in my backyard again yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m going to brave the cold temps today and try to get some new images. Concentrating on some of the early Xmas decorations so I can start the month of December off with some seasonal spirit. I found a map of some homes in the county with light displays.

I’ve got to finish a few pieces that I’ve been lingering on in the workroom. Mostly for the family so I really should complete those. This one below is just a freehand cut I did from this shell as an example. I haven’t decided how to use them yet. They are pretty good size. The shell is 6.5 inches long and the board I cut is 11.5 inches long.

I thought about burning the wood a bit which gives an effect I’ve seen look interesting. But the grain of the wood seems to match the shell’s flow, and I might emphasize that. I should have taken a shot without the shell on top.

I should have used a thinner piece of wood. Live and learn. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve started carvings of two other shells, much more detailed but also decent sizes. But today I will try to finish a Dolphin and Horse for my granddaughter.

Smiling

Ah the smells of the Thanksgiving feast have started. The family will be together in a few hours. The Macy’s parade is starting. Normally I’d be getting off work around 7am and just going to sleep about now but retirement has freed me from that nonsense, and I get to enjoy another holiday the way most celebrated.

Photography Journey Day 27 Recap – 11/27/24

Another slow shooting day. But good progress on organization, editing and upload images. I found several old ones that inspired some new blogging ideas.

Lessons I learned yesterday.

  • Even though I’m hungry as I can be I need to be disciplined enough to take a picture of the food first. Because some dishes are just beautiful to the sight as well as the pallet.
  • You can’t get any new shots unless you pick up the camera. I only took 3 frames yesterday and it was so little I didn’t even download them yet.
  • Watched a video on Macro photography. Never had a camera with a macro-option.
  • Read some more of The Photographers Playbook. Reading is good for knowledge.

Just one of the many activities that kept me from my hobbies yesterday was the University of Maryland Basketball game. But it’s always good to take a break every so often. And it was a great game filled with many highlights.

Tired but happy

Tuesday, I put in a good effort on several fronts. Mainly on the personal one but productive in hobbies also. Didn’t sleep well again last night but made the best use of being up.

Photography Journey Day 26 Recap- 11/26/24

I almost forgot to charge the cameras before leaving yesterday for some shopping with my better half. Shopping isn’t something I do much, but I thought I’d check out Staples being I’m considering moving the photo ink and paper purchasing I’ve done through Amazon to someone else. I’m not a fan of J.B. His x wife on the other hand seems to be the generous side of the family.

I’ve done some reading on food photography and holiday shooting. I hope to put the new camera to the test.

This weekend forecast and beyond is for much colder temps which will test my internal will to get out each day and shoot part of the county.

Like these two, I’ve stood on this bridge with very good friends on more than one occasion having discussions about life and business. Photo by Mike Hartley

Chomping at the bit

I’ve been in the workroom each day chopping away at some wood. I’ve been trying to make that a daily habit as well as my photography.

Photography Journey Day 23 – 11/23/24

Uploaded over 200 images to the photo site. Probably edited another 50 or so. It was cold and windy and I’m still not 100% so I stayed in except for dinner at one of our local favorites (Oscars Ale House)

Those bits above and many more are the tools I like. Below is a set of manicure tools made with Mother of Pearl. The belonged to my Mother’s Mother. They have just been passed down in our family to yet another generation, so 4 and counting.

These were so beautiful I wanted to get a shot before they let the house. I know my Mom would be happy with them being passed along.

I should get moving on some editing. By my count I have 256 images remaining. I must watch myself getting trash happy when I’m tired. So let me light the other end of the candle and get to work.

Effort

It’s all about the work you’re willing to put in or not. The last few days I’ve haven’t made that commitment I’d hoped for in my hobbies. Today we get back on track.

Photography Journey Day 22 Recap of 11/22/23

The day got away from me yesterday. I didn’t pick up the camera much. The only shot I took that I liked was below. Some days my body won’t cooperate. Some days it’s my mind. I usually can make those days productive still. But both give me pause and less accomplishment.

I did catch a few educational videos on my new camera. Also sorted and stored some physical prints. I have a wall of professional items from my career that I’m also working on arranging in the basement. And I picked up the Dremel tool, so the day wasn’t a total loss. It just felt like I wasted a lot of time. And that is one thing you can’t get back.

Some nice snow yesterday. No shoveling required. Photo by Mike Hartley

Keep it rolling

Let me sit and pound some drums, I feel like Neil Peart. Hand me that guitar and let me rip like Eddie Van Halen and duck walk like Angus Young. Move out the way, I want to dance like Gene Kelly.

I can’t believe it’s Friday already. I felt a little inspired this early morning. I worked on some photo editing and took the cover off the printer and got going on a few more display prints for the basement.

And then it went and got cold and snowing.

Photography Journey Day 21 recap – 11/21/24

Yesterday I worked on some editing and organization. Did a few uploads to the photo site and participated in a new photo group blog called ThursdayDoors.

We were busy with childcare, and I didn’t take advantage of that opportunity but I’ll get another shot at it this coming Thursday when the family gathers for Thanksgiving.

I shot these at the Marriottsville Bridge crossing the South Branch of the Patapsco River.

Photos by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve gotten a little lax lately and put on a few pounds. Time to shed those before Thanksgiving.
  • Dr Oz. Is that a name or philosophy?
  • Starting to incorporate walnuts into the diet more.
  • I would say “where does the day go” but I’m afraid another one might disappear.

Out each day

Sometimes I feel selfish devoting time to my hobbies. I think that is one reason I don’t mind waking up early because I’m not taking time away from our relationship because she is sleeping. I’m excited to get busy with my hobbies and I’m going to accelerate my morning activities.

Photography Journey Day 20 – 11/20/24

The weather will present some opportunities in the next few days. Some rain tonight and high winds on Thursday and Friday. Of course, high winds also make me nervous about losing power with all those trees surrounding the power lines.

A couple errands let me be out and about today. I don’t know what it is, but I’m drawn to the Patapsco River lately. I’ve always enjoyed shooting around water. I’m going to try some trails this weekend that I haven’t ventured through before.

Brothers in a bin

I always keep an extra leg to stand on around the house, in the car and often on the camera. We have some light rain this morning and I see clouds in the forecast. That coupled with some other duties today will limit my shooting a bit.

Photography Journey Day 15 – 11/15/24

Tripods, something I’ve rarely employed but I’m going to change that dynamic. The first reason is I’m just not as stable as I used to be. And the equipment I use isn’t particularly light. In addition, I’m shooting at greater focal lengths now and the less vibration, the better the image.

I anticipate the need for these more as I age. Photo by Mike Hartley

I have 4 of them. The two above, and two full size ones. One from my parents that I think was made in the 1950s. It’s a Davidson Star D Aluminum tripod. I still use it and but mainly the indoor unit. One of the legs at full length won’t stay tight.

The main unit is a MeFoto Roadtrip aluminum in Red. Match my car color almost. It’s a nice steady unit that holds a DSLR and a heavy lens with ease. It’s fairly lightweight and adjustable. And it was in my price range. (always the great determiner)

This will be a regular companion from now on. Photo by Mike Hartley

Here it is evening already and I haven’t shot anything today so far. We were helping the family with young ones and old ones. They both need watching. It was fun as always, but kind of draining.

Maybe this is the night I step outside for some evening shooting. I’ll have to see if I have any energy left after watching the basketball game.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I wonder if Bezos has Musk envy.
  • There is a lot to be said. Trouble is it’s become a game of one upmanship.
  • Dealing with some tough issues. It’s kind of impeding my creativity and spirit.
  • When someone wants to put my family or my health at risk, they should realize that it is a two way street.

Working through it

I see that my OS on both computers got an update as well as a new version of chrome again. I feel mentally refreshed after a good 7 hours of sleep. The body feels otherwise. I left the camera batteries charging this morning and we are ready to roll again. Unfortunately, the weather outside is cloudy and rain starts this afternoon.

So making the best of a less than optimal day and continuing to learn.

Photography Journey Day 14 – 11/14/24

I love getting outside when it’s nice to take photographs. I struggle when it’s not so nice to get motivated and creative. I have a chance to work on that weakness today.

So, I thought what do I shoot inside because I had just put the cover on the car.

I thought about what is unique about the interior of the house. Ahh, the granddaughter’s growth record on my sons doorframe. She gets so excited when I make a new mark. I got to get a picture of her smile someday when we are doing that measurement. Better yet a video. That will have to be another day.

Then I opened a box of things I was sorting of my father’s trying to decide what to keep and organize. In it was his WWII googles. I said let me get this and share its history. I believe he also had a similar pair for Operation Deep Freeze.

Photo Tasks accomplished today

  • Went through 200 slides and only kept about half. I have thousands to go.
  • Started to organize about 2-300 prints by category and file with existing ones.
  • While stretching the back out on the floor I reached over and grabbed a few volumes of photo history (below) and skimmed.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I smile at the memory of going with my Son to get our haircuts at Sal’s Barbershop and then having breakfast at the Forest Diner. I can’t believe that was decades ago.
  • I’m too old for the amount of conflict coming. Don’t get me wrong though, I can still give it out.
  • I wonder if this camera I just purchased is my last? Given the length of time I use cameras I could be a very old man when this one bites the dust. If so I hope it gets a good workout before I go.
  • I haven’t heard my daughters voice in a while. I miss it.
  • My mind is getting weak, pain and discomfort are taking over thought and creative juices.

Pretty good Wednesday

Any day that the doctor says “your all good, see you next year” it’s a good day. It was also a very quick appointment and NO WAIT. I should have got a lottery ticket today. Now if I can get the same reaction from some other doctors I see I’ll be dancing in the rain.

So onto the enjoyment of the day.

Photography Journey Day 13 – 11/13/24

Took my first bird shot with the new camera around sunrise this morning in my backyard. This task will serve a dual purpose. I’ll try to learn the types of birds along the way.

Not sure about this one. An Eastern Bluebird or female Mountain Bluebird.

After the doctor’s visit I was short on daylight so I headed to a spot near the home. The Patapsco River where it crosses under Woodstock/Old Court Road is about a mile down the road. The shot below is standing on the bridge over it.

I can see clearly now, the leaves have gone. Photo by Mike Hartley

Of course, I had to go down by the water, bad knee and all, and get a shot of the bridge I was on.

Crystal clear water. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll make sure to hike down here when the temps get colder and the ice starts to form.

It doesn’t look cold yet. Photo by Mike Hartley

What I learned today.

  • Hiking with my new camera is a lot easier than the big Nikon.
  • Even though you’re out in the wild doesn’t mean wildlife will be there with you.
  • I’m going to have to start taking my tripod with me more.
  • You can only capture your next shot if you’re out trying to get it.

Tuesday

The day didn’t start well with Verizon’s internet service being down for a few hours early this morning while I was trying to work. I do have a limited backup. But getting support from Verizon isn’t a pleasant process.

Photography Journey Day 12 – 11/12/24

I know it’s not winter yet but I’ll complain anyway. I don’t like cool or cold wind and it was blowing good today. The few leaves left on the trees were mostly on the ground today.

In my continuing effort to bring the best parts of Howard County out in pictures. I drove along the north edge of the county on River Road which borders the South Branch of the Patapsco River. That has some wonderful views in all seasons. Oh, there is one shot of the back of some buildings in Sykesville where I pick up River Road.

Lock and Key

I spent a few minutes watching both the sunrise and the sunset on some of the Ocean City webcams today, what a treat. Tomorrow I’ll get out and catch one here.

Lock and Key is a song by RUSH that came to mind when I was editing this photo below. I’ve never attached a lock to a bridge. If I do I think I’ll do a personal etching on it.

Photography Journey Day 11 – 11/11/24

  • Found the Neutral Density filter for my new camera. Might give it a shot tomorrow.
  • Made a few more 8x10s for the beach project.
  • Assembled some props for studio work.
  • Went out for an hour of shooting
  • Upload 200 images to the site.

I’ve got an early morning and afternoon shooting plan for tomorrow. And I hope to get up early again and finish some work in the office.

The body wasn’t cooperating today otherwise I would have stayed out longer shooting. Going to apply heat now so I can get cooking again tomorrow.

Not bad for a Monday

What a beautiful day. After we had our water system serviced I took a ride with the top down and had a snowball in the late afternoon sun. Stopped and took a few shots while out but was limited by some pain. I hope to share a few images later if meds do their trick.

Looking at you. Photo by Mike Hartley

Photography Journey Day 10 recap – 11/10/24

  • Tried some macro shooting. I’ll do better on tonight’s attempt.
  • Organized my prints and stored them.
  • Tested video recording.
  • Put together a camera bag for my granddaughter with my old Kodak in it for her.
  • Research monopods.
  • Read some more of the Photographers Playbook.

Making it work

I was excited about the weekend but the body had other ideas. No problem because I hope to make up for a lost opportunities. I started out strong on chores yesterday but faded fast and didn’t do any new shooting. But I did try to educate myself and did a few test.

Photography Journey Day 9 recap– 11/9/24

Uploaded some of this week’s shooting to the Zenfolio site.

Watched another video or two on shooting wildlife. Going to try some continuous shooting this week. Being rather old school photography, (film generation) I never wasted frames. And I never got that chip removed from my memory banks. I’ve finally accepted the new world and to take advantage of the tools.

Yes I know they had motor drives back in my day but they were beyond my financial reach.

I took some time to look at and optimize settings. I did a little experimenting with Noise Reduction settings and have decided to keep it on Low. This camera doesn’t allow it to be off apparently. Changed JPEG resolution to high and tinkered with shooting RAW options.

It might be that I may have to use exposure compensation a bit more with this camera than the DSLR Nikon. I’m going to have to do some side by side testing.

Daniels Dam

Good evening and welcome to a Friday evening. One I’ll spend by myself, not feeling social. But I am hard at work on images and thoughts to transfer into action.

Photography Journey Day 8 – 11/8/24

This is a nice relaxing spot I like in Howard County. It’s very small and only has parking for maybe a dozen cars and they will tow your behind if you park illegally. And usually, it gets crowded quickly. I haven’t walked many of the trails but I hope to this coming year.

I used to take lunch down there some days when I worked in Ellicott City decades ago.

It felt good to get out and walk today. I think I’ll go put a few miles on the feet tomorrow.

The foliage has dropped, and you can see much deeper into the woods. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll work my way along the Patapsco tomorrow also.

I read earlier this summer that the dam is slated for removal. Not sure of the timeframe for that but this one looks a bit more complicated than some of the others that were removed.

The water still looks inviting. But you could feel the coolness as you got closer to it.

If you’re into hills there are a few around here. Photo by Mike Hartley

Half the fun of this site is the long twisty Daniels road leading to the dam. Just be careful on those turns please, lots of them are blind.

My ride is always easy to find. It’s not a truck or SUV. Photo by Mike Hartley

5 parking spots on this upper lot and maybe 7-8 on the one below the dam.

Tonight’s photo journey will be learning the new tool more and maybe testing some portrait work.

Timing

Time is flying by and so are opportunities. I’ve missed a few this morning but I’ll recover. Like the athlete, looking for the next pitch or next shot or next game. Looking forward, learning from past mistakes is the way to go.

A cloudy sunrise is giving way to sunshine so I’m heading out to test more of this new camera while running a few errands.

Photography Journey Day 7 recap – 11/7/24

  • Watched some more videos on my new camera.
  • I’m working on testing scene modes against what I might shoot manually.
  • Cleaned the D7100.
  • Shot some nature out back.
  • Read more of The Photographers Playbook

I’m looking at each day as its own opportunity. And while it appears there is no path forward I will forge my own. Maybe someone will follow. Or maybe I’ll cross paths with other like minded individuals to smile and enjoy life with.

Luckily I got one by my side.

Discovering

What a wonderful Wednesday! Exercise in some warm weather, a ride with the top down on the car, and a meal out. An evening of basketball and photograph work.

Photography Journey Day 6 – 11/6/2024

The new camera in hand and out I went. Boy do I need some time to get familiar with all these controls. And I look forward to spending that time learning and perfecting my skills with it.

I can already tell I’m going to need to use the tripod more. I’m also thinking about adding a monopod to the collection.

The weight of the new unit is somewhere between the old point and shoot and my DSLR D7100. It’s something I can carry on a long walk/hike.

Hopefully its a step up in my future image quality. Photo by Mike Hartley

This shot below is special because it looks so normal and I waited for it to look like this. I saw these two walking down the dock towards this bench. You might not pick up on it but that is a walking cane folded up next to her on the seat. The young lady looking at her smartphone had just assisted walking her down on this sunny day.

And though she is sight impaired, she seems to be the one enjoying this beautiful day but looking up at the building skyline and feeling the sun. I smiled when I shot this and I smiled when I came across it to edit it. For it reminds me to think beyond limitations that life may place on you and enjoy the moment.

This gentlemen reminds me it’s time for a lunch break. Or more appropriately a bite of breakfast.

But after that break there is no sitting on my ass today. I will be out and about testing aspect of my new toy.

Tools of the trade

What a wonderful few days weather-wise at the beginning of November. Feeling good and closing the year out strong. I’m developing the proper mindset to keep doing my best.

But first a goodbye to an old friend below. This little Kodak z812is captured a lot of history for this family and many trips. It was always with me. I’m going to pass it down to my granddaughter soon and work with her on taking pictures.

Photography Journey Day 5 Recap- 11/5/24

I’ve gotten some new equipment and the learning process has begun. With any new tool its important to learn the techniques that produce your best work. I’m a strong believer in RTFM. But I’ll begin with all the online videos. I’ll be experimenting with what settings I’m not already familiar with.

It’s got me excited about educating myself once again. I’ve just taken my first few shots and hope to head out around sunrise to see what I can capture with this new tool.

Liking Mondays

Retirement puts a whole new perspective on Mondays.

Photography Journey Day 4 – 11/4

Both batteries for the camera have been charged and I was ready to shoot today. The body is not on the same page and that along with some chores slowed my roll during the day but I will bounce back this evening. And maybe I’ll even be out the door before the sun rises tomorrow.

I see a lot of similarities between photography and life. For instance, if you don’t get out and experience and see things, life can be less than fulfilling. Most times in life and photography, it’s up to you to see the beauty.

Sometimes your imagination can capture other’s imagination.

To me, it captures the memories and experiences of my life as I meander through its aisles. It’s a visual history for my kids and grandkids.

I learned today that not feeling well might alter where and when I shoot but it won’t prevent me from shooting.

Tonight’s agenda:

  • Download and edit the product shots I did this afternoon.
  • Upload images to the Zenfolio site.
  • Make some prints for both the Ocean City and Ellicott City projects.
  • Read some more of “The Photographers Playbook”
  • Read two articles on shooting wildlife.
  • Find something interesting tonight to shoot and share first thing tomorrow morning.

The View

The view of this day is optimistic. The weather is sunny and warming slowly, the time is available for adventure and while not feeling 100%, there is reserve strength to be used. I’ve got the camera batteries charged and I hope to get out and about and capture some of life.

I meant to post the section below last night but I passed out early.

Photography Journey Day 3 Recap

I was productive but not in the traditional sense.

I ordered a new camera. After a bit of research and talking to some technical people the choice was made. The two I’ve been using were purchased in 2007 and 2014. A Kodak Z812 IS and a Nikon D7100. I’m not going to divulge what I’m replacing the old Kodak with for a bit and first see if I can feel a difference in my photography.

Of course, I’m well aware equipment doesn’t make the photographer. I’ve made the choice based on developing some areas of shooting interest. Hopefully, they will be fully evident when I get to work.

I’m of the age where I thought to myself is this the last camera I’ll own? It might be given the length of time I seem to use them for. I hope it’s not, I hope I wear it out and have enough energy and desire in my late senior years to need another new one to keep plugging away at this craft.

My better half recognized how much I enjoyed it and encouraged me to move forward with it. Thanks for the support, my love.

Relaxed mind

A wonderful Saturday ahead. One with some chores but many opportunities. My better half is storing the Halloween items and getting out the Thanksgiving and fall items that she hasn’t already.

Photo journey day 2.

In watching a lot of reviews on cameras I’ve noticed a few things.

  • There is no shortage of people with opinions and reviews of cameras.
  • Despite the amount of photography being done on phones there is still a great selection of conventional cameras.
  • Don’t worry, I won’t add to that flooded field of sharing my opinions on the good and bad of each.
  • VLOGing features and focus on looking at self, seem to be all the rage. I still don’t get it.
  • The more I watch the more I narrow down what options there are based on what I can afford and what I hope to do with it.

I’ve done maybe a dozen spec comparisons on the B&H Photo site. I have to do some soul searching tonight and make the order. If you know what your getting before ordering it, there shouldn’t be any surprises or disappointments.

Just beginning to scratch the surface of working in photography, I’m like a kid in a candy store not knowing what to taste first. I’ve enjoyed landscape and car photography. Wildlife and architecture also. I haven’t had much practice at storm photography but it’s certainly enticing.

The pet and flower photography used to draw more interest from me but has waned in recent times. I need to do more portraits, sports, and street shooting. Some documentary pieces would be fun also.

I’ve been doing a little more food shooting this year and I wouldn’t mind practicing some product shots this winter to keep me busy inside. I might teach myself a few things about lighting along the way.

Of course the typical family shooting for years along with the local community events and towns.

I’m too busy learning and doing to teach anything so it’s just going to be my experiences, thoughts, and images in this journey. I have no problem being a perpetual student. That way I don’t miss anything important or stop developing.

What I learned yesterday. – Fall is fleeting, shoot fast.
