Let’s get to the point

No more beating around the bush this morning. It’s going to be a great day. And why you ask, because we are alive and we have hope. Notice, I said we. I figure there are some like-minded people trying to share that thought and feeling through their words and actions.

When working in DC I used to do something that threw some people off. Growing up in a somewhat rural area people spoke to each other when passing. That isn’t the case in Washington DC on the workweek in the business/government parts of town from what I experienced for a few decades.

On my walks from the parking garage a few blocks away from the building I’d always make a point to be smiling and passing along a greeting if someone made eye contact or maybe a positive node. Even the occasional “everyone’s looking good today” which usually evoked some smiles when I would say it waiting for the light to change so we could cross the street together. Sometimes I’d even notice a little extra spring in their steps.

I would always greet our security guards coming and going. I think it’s rude to just walk past people like they are some kind of machine. Especially when their job is to help ensure your safety.

Getting a smile back was a nice reward. Or just a nod was cool.

What amazed me was that co-workers would ignore the cleaning crew when I worked evenings. People wouldn’t acknowledge them as they kept their work areas clean. I always made a point to greet them and thank them.

Going into the parking garage I’d always slow to wave to the attendant on duty and say good morning as I came up the stairs by his station.

What was and still is appalling and I’m guilty of it myself now. Ignoring the homeless like they don’t exist. I was much better when I worked nights and would acknowledge all of them on my walks at lunchtime. Even bringing extra food for a buck or two for some of the nice regulars. Maybe they were easier to see at night because they weren’t being ignored by hundreds of people walking by every few minutes.

So that is my point this morning. I’m going to try to get back to my old friendly smiling self and share the hope.

Slithering into the early morning

Spending some time in a horizontal position is what my back needed. I was hurting around 6pm last night so I laid down and was going to rest for an hour. Well, 6 hours later I wake and find the lower back relaxed as this snake below. What a great surprise, I’m just hoping it’s not temporary.

Looks like a busy day ahead with 16 items on the ToDo list and another 20 on my Hobby list. I guess that is why I’m never at a loss for what to do. I just consult my list. And I have tons of them. I used to keep most of them between my ears, now I have to write them down.

Since I took my Maryland Eastern Shore Exhibit down, I’ve been torn on what to replace that with. So, I started running across a few photos I liked and started the presses. That would be the Canon Pro-100 printer.

Early this morning I was making prints for a series on Textures and found this shot that I hadn’t used here. It feels strange being in a good mood, working on things that make me happy and at the same time the country may be facing a great crisis.

It’s a difficult thing to reconcile each day. But one must keep their sanity so I’ll march on again today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Having doubts is okay. Dwelling on them isn’t.
  • The further west I go in this state the better the drivers are.
  • I’m getting very near my target weight.
  • There is a good stretch of weather coming that I hope to take full advantage of.

Drops

It’s hot and dry outside and I doubt we see any drops on the flowers till the weekend. An image like this makes me think of the word relief. I dodge raindrops now, but I didn’t when I was younger. I think I’ll see how it feels again.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Wildlife is really taking a toll on the gardens this year.
  • The trauma we put our young children through because we won’t deal with some of society’s problems is embarrassing.
  • This will be a good night to be outside.
  • Water might become an issue like fuel cost in the future for some parts of the world. Including the US
  • Such highs and lows. For some too much.
  • There is a possibility that fruits and vegetables could be spreading this cyclosporiasis. No problem here, I can avoid those and still be very happy.

Under a watchful eye

Being observant is a good skill to have. Being aware of your surroundings. As a wanna be photographer my eyes are always on a swivel. While this guy is hunting for a good fish. I’m fishing for a good shot.

Besides shooting a colorful bug this morning I haven’t lifted the camera to my eye. I should try to get some images this evening, but my energy is low. At the same time, I’m trying to work harder on my passions.

Being I work alone I should make self-evaluations a more regular part of my work cycle. I’m thinking that might help me improve my consistency at least and maybe even get me to another level.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Sports used to be inspiring. Gambling has turned me off of watching it like I used to.
  • The amount of AI that is already being used in businesses phone systems has already pissed me off.
  • The only ones that will turn things around are the ones that you see in the mirror each morning.
  • Okay, I’m tired of the rain.
  • I hear thunder, let me post this before my power goes out again.

Substitute

There is no substitute for the sun. But being its AWOL this morning here in central Maryland, I’ll try to provide some inspiration.

There is no substitute for good health. I kind of started to take getting out of bed each morning for granted. I used to pause a bit and be more thankful. I’ve got to get back to that feeling to start the day.

There is no substitute for exercise. Another thing I’m not doing enough of.

Anyone who tries to substitute turkey bacon for real bacon should be arrested and tried for fraud.

People try to substitute a lot of things in place of love.

My basement is a substitute for an art studio.

Substituting one addiction with another usually isn’t a wise move. But I guess it’s better than adding one on top of another.

Sometimes against better judgement, I hit the publish button anyway.

What is your nectar

My nectar this afternoon is work and blogging. Taking a break from the heat and in between finding a photo or sharing a thought.

As I was looking at this shot, I was reminded of all the development in this county. How much of the natural beauty we have replaced with concrete buildings and asphalt parking lots. Or multi home communities and strip malls. I’ve lived here for over 6 decades now and the change is nothing less than dramatic.

Today I’m not going to judge the past mistakes or greatness of the development. There is a good bit of both. But looking forward, the pace just can’t continue. Many feel we crossed the tipping point long ago. We may have. There are parts of the county that have become a congested mess.

No matter how many lanes we add, the traffic still comes to a stop.

I see a few Farmlands Forever signs when driving the country roads of the county. But how many will survive our future and not be turned into residential or commercial properties?

I’ve dealt with the changes by moving to a part that was remote, but development has caught up to us over the last 4 decades bit by bit. Sometimes large chunks like Waverly Woods which I think were around 700 acres. It’s no longer woods.

But a lot of small track development also. Neighborhoods shoehorned in between existing ones and some packed so tightly you can spit and hit your neighbor’s house. And these are close to 7-digit homes. McMansions built on postage stamp lots. And then you have the real rich who like their 3-10 acres spreads with custom built spectacles that now dot more and more of the county.

Think I’ll get involved and try to slow this down. Maybe county officials just haven’t heard the right argument yet.

Howard County Maryland has been a great place to live. Lots will complain about it. Maybe I just grew up in the right time and place in it.

Choose

Choose to be something before you get too old. And while it’s never too late as I’m hoping to prove, it’s wiser to get an earlier start than I chose to.

Choose to make wise choices in life. Sometimes it’s the harder path. Take it.

Choose to love. Yes, it’s painful. It’s also the best.

Choose to take a chance. You will regret it if you don’t.

Choose to be there for people. You will have their respect.

I reckon so

I like the phrase “I reckon so” from the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales. It’s a phrase I say to myself a bit to help accept some situations.

Life is about outlook. And life is hard so having that positive outlook is challenging at many points. Personally, I just have to keep my eye on the goal of being happy.

And today I’m accomplishing that by picking up my hobbies again. Yardwork, dog sitting and foundation sealing have had me occupied the last few days, but we are almost caught up there.

A lot of people might not want to dine outside later this week.

Then again, this week may be too hot for some of you. Not for this kid. I like it and yes that 100+ will be uncomfortable but it won’t keep me from being out and about. This shot also got me thinking about having a meal outside. I haven’t been to LeeLynn’s with my better half in a while and I’ve always liked their food and service.

I’ll move the workbench outside and will do some woodwork after getting a haircut in the morning. I’ll make sure the camera batteries are charged and hopefully sit down at the easel for a bit.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It always feels good to have a more productive week than the previous week. I just have to keep building on that.
  • I’m having beach withdraw. I’ve got to solve that soon.
  • The definition of spotty showers was this past weekend.
  • There are two goals I have for today and they seem in conflict. I’d like to do a lot of shooting, and I’d like to spend some time in my hammock.

Cute pair

Early yesterday morning I stepped out and saw a fawn along the tree line in the lower backyard. Quickly stepping back inside for the camera.

I thought that was odd because there is usually a pair grazing and playing in the open space with mom nearby. No mom, no second fawn.

As I stood silently while this one ate, maybe 100 ft from me, something caught my other eye.

That something else was the second fawn just below, maybe 10 feet from me. The hill in my backyard drops off fast.

I had time to raise the camera slightly and clicked this frame before I got it to my eye, so I didn’t have time to change focus. She ran down to join the sibling.

They stood at the woods and looked till I heard an odd sound from the woods which they ran to immediately. Bet mom was watching all the time.

Slithering along

Not all snakes are in the grass. Not all black snakes remain black when they crawl beside a red car on a sunny day.

Onto more pleasant things. The ride I took before sunset last night was beautiful. Local traffic wasn’t bad and I just cruised leisurely. Some teams were still on the fields at Wallace Park. Some people on porches watching the end of their day.

A few other convertibles appreciating the opportunity to have the top down. Businesses starting to close up shop. The night shift beginning for the crews working on the tunnel project for Ellicott City flood prevention.

Still a lot of good things in this area. And I hope there are still a lot of good people. I was disappointed with one statistic on voting recently in the county. I believe it was the percentage of eligible democratic votes in this primary election was less than the previous mid-term primary. Personally, seeing declining numbers before a general election isn’t what I had hoped for.

Come on people, it’s so friggen easy. Get a mail in ballot if you’re working and it’s not convenient. The only way to make things better is if we are all working on it.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The feeling I have is that the Supreme Court isn’t so Supreme anymore.
  • Rain is like the other side of the coin.
  • 4 years old is a wonderful age for children.
  • Close to The Edge isn’t just an album by Yes.
  • I would think we would want to learn about prescription drugs from our doctors if we need them, not from commercials.

Working hard

It’s hump day for those working away. That midpoint that inspires hope. Maybe thoughts of making it an early weekend after Thursday have come to mind. Those meetings today don’t seem as important as the weekend weather forecast.

I guess I shouldn’t have noted that it’s Hump Day because I went out to mow my yard and the mowing deck belt broke as soon as I engaged the blades. So, I push cut for hours today. And when I say push, I mean push. I don’t have one of those self-propelled jobs.

And there are now a few more things on the to-do list. That tractor is so old I haven’t been able to find any YouTube videos on how to replace the belt. It’s at least 27 years old and as one of my best friends reminded me, I usually keep things like that till I kill it. And a belt isn’t a killer but getting someone else to do it because this almost 70-year-old body isn’t good on the ground under tractors anymore. Yes, I can do it. Yes, I could pay for it to be done. Yes, it isn’t dead. But is it smart money spent or the time and effort?

I’m beginning to think it might be time to replace it. Plus, that will give me time to fix the old one when I can get my sons help and give it to him when he gets a home with a bigger yard. Push cutting the whole lawn this size in the coming heat won’t be smart and I won’t do it.

Onto more pleasant things. Like nature which I’ve been enjoying being outside today. Let’s see, some baby snakes, many varieties of birds. Oh, and my favorite hawk buzzed the backyard. This morning was a mother deer with her fawn again. Another newborn couldn’t have been more than a day or two old. And now just after some dinner I see our woodchuck grazing in the backyard.

I couldn’t tell you all the different smaller winged objects I saw buzzing around me today. It was nice to be out, even though it was working.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Making prints for my grandchildren is a labor of love, I do have to finish it up before they get here tomorrow.
  • These are the beautiful mid-Atlantic days of summer. Low to mid-80s, mild humidity a breeze and sun with just the occasional cloud.
  • I hear my car saying let’s go for a ride tonight. And I might just listen to it and put the top down.
  • You will have to excuse me for a bit. I have to go wash off a day’s worth of work. More madness to come later.

Some days I blend in so much I feel invisible. Maybe that is my superpower. Stealth mode does have its advantages.

  • I don’t know if I dislike rain more because it keeps me from being outside or it helping the grass grow faster making cutting more often necessary.
  • It’s hard to maintain long-term relationships. It takes effort on both sides.
  • Voted in a primary again today. It’s not a job, it’s a joy.
  • Making some productive plans for tomorrow because I spent Monday on fun with family and Tuesday working out some pain and resting.

No more part time effort

Part of blogging in my opinion is the interaction. I started off with a nice balance and maintained that for many years. This last year as I’ve increased my own production and worked harder on some of my other hobbies creating, I’ve dropped off reading and interacting in WordPress.

That was a bad development because a lot of the enjoyment of working in this environment is reading and seeing all the wonderful work others produce. I started to pick up my reading this past week but I’m going to start carving out more time to look at the creations of others.

In a lot of ways even my own creative efforts have been part time. Time to cure that oversite also. I’ve always hated the thought of being on any schedule in retirement, but without one I’m not accomplishing my goals. I’m off to discover a better mix. That might mean cutting some other things out. Or finding more efficient ways to do other things. Taking advantage of opportunities, I’m missing now.

An easy adjustment is to reduce my time on the TV. Also, I’ve got to find a more efficient way to get my news. I waste time on both those things.

Yesterday I was pretty busy working around the house and yard, but I said I’m going to pick up the camera every day. So right before I got in the shower at the end of the day, I walked over to my neighbor’s garden and snapped a few flower shots.

I’m going to get more efficient in the blogging process. Preparing more posts in advance and working on more weekly challenges.

Then the hobbies that have gotten off to a much slower start than I had hoped for. Both painting and drawing are way behind, and I have several unfinished carving projects.

Long as I have my health, I know I can turn this thing around.

  • I hear there is a big party in NYC this coming Thursday.
  • Though I complain about the aches and pains of life, I certainly have great appreciation for all the years I’ve been given.
  • We can pull his name off buildings but it’s going to be harder to erase the stain on this country he’s made.
  • I thought someone was trying to break into my house this morning. It was a red-headed woodpecker pounding on my fence near my back door.
  • Now I know why my mom had so many magnifying glasses around her house.
  • MAGA fans don’t forget to get your $11,999.99 Trump coin before their sold out.

Utilizing

Feeling like I’ve got a good jump on being more active this month. Now to sustain that effort each day. This one was easy because it was just one of those early June days with low humidity and just a little below average temps with a slight breeze.

The only downside is the amount of pollen in the air. But we made it through without a sneeze.

Second walk of the month was at the Howard County Conservancy. What a great day for it also.

It’s nature so of course there is some color.

This That There

There I go again, off on another tangent. This must stop. That rage must end.

Okay, I’m better again. Could be the music I just turned up. The prospect of seeing my children and grandchildren this weekend. The thought of the sun appearing tomorrow after a week of absence. Maybe that twitch in my left leg, and right hand can be cured by that manual transmission once I rip the cover off.

I’m sorry, after a week of sitting the traction control button is going to be disabled and the top will be down.

All these things have me looking up. I know I’m behind on some fresh shooting for this week. I captured my favorite Hawk Monday between the rain taking in the view from a power pole in my back yard.

And of course, after he finished pretending we looked at each other for a good bit.

I feel kind of creative today. Must be this cleaned up office. I just put a fresh stack of 8×10 semi-gloss in the printer, so I think I’ll make that hum for a bit.

I might try some night shooting when darkness rolls in.

  • I forgot that I really liked the Bob Segar song Shakedown a lot.
  • My mom had beautiful penmanship. I didn’t get that gene.
  • I have a choice to express myself or not. Why waste the opportunity to go wild.
  • Today feels like a day to mess with a telemarketer caller.

Catch your breath

If you were outside yesterday it would be tough to catch your breath if you were active like our friend here. This little guy needed a break on the bench.

That will be me today because I plan on spending a lot of the day outside. I’ll have to remind myself to stay hydrated in this heat.

No time like the present to kick this into high gear. Felt good to get an hour of seat time yesterday. I’m going for a few hours today with the top down and cameras along for the ride when we stop for a break.

Speaking of catching your breath, my better half discovered this guy on our porch yesterday. I took him back to the woods behind our home. Not that he won’t be back. I don’t have an issue with them unless they surprise me which they do often. I walked into one resting on a tree branch at eye level a few years back

Each time I see one of these I end up looking down a lot more for a few days.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • With 5 days of rain starting on Wednesday evening, I’ll be spending a lot of time outside today and tomorrow.
  • With me the words (mental health) are a contradicting term.
  • Looks like the clown show is starting to wear thin with his fans.
  • Staying out of the way of all the crazies is getting more difficult by the day.

Residents

For many years now a family of woodchucks has made part of our wooded yard, and our neighbors wooded area their home. We are both fine with that. They don’t bother anything and are almost impossible to see out. Their sight, sense of smell and hearing must be incredible.

  • I’m so sick of spam calls.
  • Any day with a dentist’s appointment is not my favorite day.
  • Before I retired, I thought there would be days I missed working. I was wrong.
  • There is always a reason. Some just don’t hold water.

Fire it up

I think I’ll crank up the firepit this evening, sit outside and listen to nature again. But before that the cover comes off the Miata, and I’ll fire up the 2-seat fun machine and eat up some local roads on this hopefully sunny day.

It might be a good week to fire up the grill also. I think this coming weekend is the time for that. Then again, the price of meat might just set fire to the weekly budget.

And of course, the body needs to fire out, and I’ll get to the treadmill and dumbbells in a few minutes. I also have several long walks planned this week.

Starting the week off on a Monday in retirement is an entirely different mindset. I look forward to the busy week ahead.

  • Best time of day – 3am to 11am – I just like early mornings.
  • My 1-year-old granddaughter’s smile and laugh at me is like a super fuel.
  • I need to make reading more a priority.
  • Harford Road off the Beltway and up to Belair is a road full of twisties. A new route for my Miata.
  • That fog this morning was like driving through a white out.
  • It looks like Mother Nature has taken that “Go Green” slogan to heart. Everything went green in no time.
  • I hope to do something today that my body might not want to do in the future.

Halftime

Mother nature is supplying the color, and my better half is sprinkling the gardens and yard with beauty. Me, I’m the DESTROYER. Power tools in hand and chopping, digging or cutting. That’s my role. Just taking a break after cutting the front 50 and some raking.

About to do the difficult part and push cut the mountain of a backyard.

You don’t get better weather days than this. Sunny and the high 70s with a mild breeze.

Nature is alive and buzzing. Like the bumblebees that fly around me.

All I know is that I felt like a colorful midday post and came up with this.

So let me return to the great outdoors and make a push to finish strong today. Then treat us to a nice dinner.

Good old one two

Back to my earlier start to the day. About 3:30am I believe, was the rise and shine. Well, I’ve got the rising part down. Let’s see what I can help shine today.

I noticed the grass starting to recover and start to green along with some sprouts in the garden recently.

The migration north of our feathered friends will add to the spring palette of color. I’ve got to remember to bring my monopod inside. Shooting handheld at distance is hit and miss. Especially with back spasms going on.

I’m so ready for spring but this month’s forecast isn’t looking that positive for central Maryland. No problem, I’ll just extend my hibernation season.

  • Just watched another beautiful sunrise. Great way to start the day.
  • It’s Jellybean season.
  • Strong storms on the horizon for Monday. Guess I should get a disaster post ready in case I lose power again.
  • A day without a plan brings a smile to my face.
  • My cars are clean in and out, as a matter of choice. I don’t know why that gene didn’t transfer to my kids.
  • Ah, another day that is the dumpster fire of an administration going down in flames. We haven’t even gotten to the good part where they start turning on each other.

I’m Up

Just went looking around for someone else who is up. Didn’t find anyone. Pretty normal for this time of night. No problem, I’m an expert at entertaining myself. Loneliness is not possible when there is always me myself and I to have a group chat with. I’ve always been a bunch of mixed-up personalities anyway.

Just put the headphones on so I won’t disturb those resting. I needed some music this morning. Was a bit down last night and fell asleep early so I’m up early. What a tangled mess I weave. Music is helping as it always does, getting my thoughts moving in a more positive direction.

Funny I just had a flashback to when I worked a shift where I was getting off work around 3-4am in the morning and those drives home on hot summer nights were great. The pinnacle of NO TRAFFIC. Once I cleared the city line and got onto the highway, I would crank up the volume on my favorite songs and just cruise along at the speed limit or less because of all the wildlife out at that time.

Those were some of the most relaxing rides imaginable. Just having completed a long shift. The dark, quiet and empty highways. Yeah, there was the occasional drunk who finally found his/her keys an hour after the bar closed still trying to make it home. And yes, I used to see a lot of them. But for the most part it was a sweet trip.

Speaking of sweet trips. Today was a top-down day filled with country roads. Boy was it beautiful and did it feel good.

  • I hope I can go through the rest of life and not need all those drugs I see advertised on TV.
  • Getting my mind to slip into exercise mode is the trick I’ve learned to be consistent.
  • Party like it’s your last week. Thought inspired by the band The Doobie Brothers song, The Doctor
  • When a child smiles it’s genuine. When an adult smiles you can’t always be sure.

Just strolling through life

Saw a friend out and we acknowledged each other. He’s not too talkative. Occasionally he has an attitude where he will stomp his foot which means I’m not in the mood for it today. Sometimes though he and others will stand there and let me yap at them. They will even resume grazing.

I won’t be strolling the next two days. I’ll be out strutting. I’ve been waiting all winter to get that top down on a nice day and stretch my legs in that Miata. Also, a nice long walk outside instead of the treadmill will be nice. I think I’ll get some carry-out also and have lunch outside. It’s been a while since that treat.

  • Does it feel like the good old days are behind us?
  • I spent a couple of hours working for free for Verizon again today troubleshooting their issues. This is getting old.
  • The weekends activities are wrapped up. Time to relax and enjoy a quiet evening.
  • If you like Krispy Kreme doughnuts tomorrow is the day to go. A free dozen with a purchase of a dozen glazed.

Look

Found a small series of shots that I had bypassed before. Probably because the images aren’t the sharpest, but the subject is very nice. I believe this is a Northern Flicker but please correct me if I’m mistaken. I’m no bird expert.

If my eyes were better I would use autofocus less.

Nature photography is something that requires patience.

I still make the mistake of not shooting enough when doing nature shots. That limitation in my head from the old film days.

I love it when I can get a half decent image.

Some days I feel like this myself.

Some subjects can be so shy.

Let me lift off and see what I can capture today.

But others will give you portrait shots all day long.

Return

With the feels like temp at -18 degrees when I started this post, I think this might not be the season yet for this guy. But I’m dreaming of warmer weather soon. I have to think of warmer weather with that cold wind whipping outside.

Thankfully we have been able to stay under power today. The lights flickered once or twice but that was it. I do see lots of branches and sticks that will need picking up once the big melt comes along. That won’t be today unfortunately or anytime soon unfortunately.

My friends have been talking about spending more time in a warmer climate. Easier said than done for some of us. I don’t have the money for a second home or to live in another spot for a few months out of the year. And that is okay because I’m not sure I’d want to own a home in Florida for instance.

Insurance for storms, upkeep, renting it when not in use are all headaches I don’t need. Plus, I’m not a big fan of flying and that is too long of a drive to do on any regular basis.

We have settled on a few trips here and there. But till then, we endure.

  • I never knew it could be this cold out with bright sunshine.
  • I see the publisher of The Washington Post resigned. In the 2 years since I’ve been gone you and JB have pretty much destroyed that publication. Should look good on your resume Will.
  • The house is filled with smells from the kitchen as snack day gets underway.
  • MAGA cheering against our Olympic team because they hold a different political view is typical of the intolerance of anyone who holds a different view than theirs.

MIA

Okay, who stole the beach? I used to like these walkways to the beach at Bethany before storms took them away. Nature gives and nature takes away. Maryland and Delaware spend tens of millions of dollars on beach replenishment almost every year.

Luckily these and other efforts sustain these beach towns we all enjoy. And while storms have certainly been severe, none have been of the destruction you see with the hurricanes in south. The thin beaches and dune lines get taken away or pushed back often as it is.

I fear what I see happening in the Outer Banks, possibly happening here one day. I just hope it’s not in my lifetime.

You might have noticed I haven’t been crowing about my favorite University of Maryland Basketball team as much in previous posts. I still love them, I knew it would be a tough year replacing the whole team and coaches. I’m still going to get to games. I’m enjoying the regular season because chances of making March Madness go down early in the season with key injuries, but our chances were still slim. I have no less enthusiasm for them. I’ve adjusted expectations. Something a lot of fans do, because you can’t win every year.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • First time I’ve slept past noon in a while. Of course, going to bed at 7am was the incentive.
  • I can’t believe they sent snowplows out in our neighborhood for a dusting of snow. And no, I’m not one of those people who complain about how long it takes for them to plow when it does snow good.
  • Remembering my wife’s uncle who’s on his last days. I liked both her Uncle Ron and Uncle Fran.
  • The purge has started. Yep, I’m cleaning the basement.

Look more closely

I’ve shot two photos that I was about to throw away recently. They taught me an important lesson. One was a shot of leaves on the tree in the backyard. The other a landscape/cloud shot.

I zoomed in to see how sharp the focus was on the leaf shot and saw a hornet resting on a leaf in the tree. Maybe waiting for the sun to thaw it out.

I had already zoomed in at 200mm to get the full shot below this cropped one. I thought it was odd to zoom in while editing at that point and see it when I hadn’t noticed it in the full shot.

It’s just to the left of center.

The next image was on the same day looking from my deck through the backyards of my neighbors. I was looking for a cloud shot and almost threw it away when I looked at the sky and wondered what was that flying.

It appears to be two large birds, and my guess is they are fighting over a meal. In editing when I really zoomed in on the wide-angle image, there was something long below them, my guess a snake. I doubt they would argue over a branch. If it was a kite I would have seen it suspended a while. Plus, our street and neighborhood are all big trees so you fly it you lose it.

These two images taught me today to look more closely at what I shot and to pay more attention. I could have zoomed in more on each of these if I was looking closer, taking my time, and gotten something worth keeping.

Walking Tuesday

Good day all and I hope this Tuesday finds everyone in good health.

Took a quick drive in Howard County this morning and collected a few shots walking around.

Along New Cut Road leaving Ellicott City.

I love shots from hills.

Such a blue sky. Clouds are on their way though.

I think we need some fresh flags at the old courthouse.

The stream that hugs the side of New Cut Road.

I like how the tips have turned but the other part is so green yet.

Visiting Privileges

Some days I just look out my back door and see unexpected visitors. Well not unexpected, just that they appear and disappear at will. Some make a ruckus. Some leave a mess. Others soar and employ stealth. Some slither and sneak.

Today two common friends. One Hawk and one Deer

The hawk just finishes a meal and being taunted by a much smaller opponent.

With the leaves falling this reminds me of the line in movie Predator. When Mac says, “I can see you”

The other having just lost the spots of youth but far from grown deer grazing in my backyard and froze when I opened the door. I was surprised she was still there when I came back with the camera.

Short walk

My better half had a doctor’s appointment that was going to be an hour or two, so I took a short walk at Lake Elkhorn before grabbing some lunch.

It was a bit overcast, and I forgot to take my monopod with me.

The place was packed with walkers, joggers and bikers. Also, some 4-legged friends were along for the stroll.

The fall colors are just starting here.

The pond below the dam is a spot a Blue Herron likes. I didn’t see them today.

As I walked back to the dock in the first shot something in the water caught my eye from a distance.

Once he saw me, he made a turn right towards me.

Maybe just curious but I was amazed at how close he came to the dock.

About 5 feet before the dock it dove, and I didn’t see him/her again.

I’ve got to work on my wildlife photos. I have to take my tripod out more.

Bombs Away

I believe I have a black walnut tree in my back yard. I also believe there are several in the neighborhood and surrounding area. Then again, I’m no tree expert but these boulders sound like Aaron Judge hitting a baseball through the forest when they fall.

I walk outside or I’m lying in the hammock, and I hear these things dropping like a big rock. Had one bounce in the street in front of me the other day.

When mowing the back with the push mower these potential ankle breakers are all around lurking like land mines.

They are larger than golf balls, but smaller than baseballs. So, heads up if you’re walking around outside. I don’t mind getting hit with the occasional oak nut dropping from the 2 trees out front. But these monsters are concussion material.

  • It was a nice evening to grill out yesterday.
  • There was no way I was going to make it through the SNF game.
  • I didn’t think it was possible for another modern-day Hitler to happen. I was wrong.
  • Holding some of my grandchildren today will give me hope and determination.

Great day

I slept in this morning after rising in the middle of the night. Worked hard through the day mowing and trimming trees. I took a 5-minute break and grabbed the camera and caught two visitors to my back yard.

With some of the foulage dropping they can’t hide as easily.

I was lazy and didn’t get my monopod out so my apologies for the sharpness.

The shower I’m about to hop into is going to feel great.

Hopefully I’ll have some more time this evening for creativity.

Wishing

I was butterfly watching as I worked out in the yard yesterday. We are going to do our part and start planting some more wildflowers for them to enjoy. Observing them moving so effortlessly makes me think of my youth and moving with ease.

The mind drove the body like it was more youthful than its actual mileage, but a good night’s rest has restored me to be able return to the battle with mother nature today. I am proud of the progress I made, and this might be the best the place has looked in a good while.

There are two projects I think I’ll get professional help with. Moving a few of the 8×8 10-foot monsters today made me realize I don’t need to be wrestling with lots of them. There is more than enough to keep me busy and challenged.

For that retaining wall project, I’ll play sidewalk super.

  • I’m proud I didn’t run out and waste money on the Powerball drawing.
  • It was nice not watching the news yesterday. I’ll just be double disgusted today.
  • I’m excited with anticipation about pulling the car cover off later this morning, washing it, having the better half in the other seat with the top down and no destination in mind.
  • There is a rack of baby back ribs calling my name from York Road.
  • That heat really fueled some heavy thunderstorms.

I’m loving Labor Day

I fell asleep very early last night, so I rose very early this morning. I went back to bed mid-morning and slept till almost noon. I guess it’s fitting, being I’ve been laboring all weekend, so I took today off and enjoyed life some.

Finally got around to ordering a fire pit today. I wanted one last year but put it off but not this year. Hope to start making good use of that outside patio this fall and winter season.

Took a casual cruise and stopped for ice cream at Bruster’s with my better half. Grilled out some chicken and now ready to enjoy the evening. I’ve got some shots to download, some more writing to do and see if the artist easel calls my name.

  • The treadmill was glad to see me back.
  • I saw someone going down the wrong side of Rt 40 by Normandy this afternoon. They recognized this when traffic came over the hill at them. No accident luckily.
  • Standing outside on the last day of August yesterday, I never thought I’d be glad to stand close to the fire on the grill to keep warm. Usually, I’m sweating you know what off.
  • I’m having lunch with an old friend this week.

Hang on, climb aboard

Life is tough. Sometimes our wings get damaged along the journey. Don’t give up, keep a strong grip on life.

Pull yourself up and keep taking one step ahead of the previous one.

I’ve known people who have given up on life. I have occasionally myself. Luckily, I was able to turn those times around.

In some ways this is one of the sweet spots in life. After the difficulty of losing our parents and beginning our own journey into our senior years, we have had the pleasure of seeing more grandchildren. Also watching our own children’s families and careers blossom.

Fortunately, we also have had many family members and friends grow old with us.

Great challenges are ahead though. The inevitable loss of friends and family, those shared memories continued friendships here today, gone tomorrow.

I would love to grow old, but that means absorbing a lot of pain and loss along the way. Maybe even loneliness. I guess that old saying “be careful what you wish for” has some meaning through every stage of life.

  • I’ll be listening to doctors, not the government for my health decisions.
  • Thoughts and prayers for school shootings were never enough. And still aren’t today, or tomorrow.
  • I pick the route I drive now by weighing with one would I encounter less idiots along the way.

What

Every once in a while, I’ll see something new in nature. This one was hard to miss being he flew right in front of my face buzzing up a storm. I saw him land on the brick about 30 feet away and ran inside and grabbed a camera.

Came back out and was able to grab this before he flew away. I guess the ruckus as he flew by was actually the two of them in a battle. I didn’t even see it till I went to edit the photo, but it looks like he has a bee in his jaws.

Reflections of yesterday

My better half and daughter had a wonderful day together. I love seeing that. And I know her mother and mine would love to see that relationship.

What a beautiful day it was. Mostly sunny but a few clouds gave me a break from the sun every so often. Spent some of it mowing which is my meditation time. I’m trying to relax a bit more and let go of some things.

Wow, the Prince of Darkness John Michael (Ozzy) Osbourne has passed. Another soundtrack of my life silenced. A couple of my favorite Ozzy tunes – Changes – Mama, I’m Coming Home and of course Paranoid, Iron Man, I Don’t Know, Crazy Train, Close My Eyes Forever, No More Tears.

Doing this blog in relative obscurity isn’t a bad thing.

I think Stephen Colbert said it best to Trump – “Go F**k Yourself”

Edge to Edge

It kind of inspired me to schedule a few more days at the shore before the season comes to an end. Of course, for me the season doesn’t end till late October. We get some nice weather in September and October. The water gets a bit too cool that last month, but September is still good sunning and swimming weather.

I love watching dolphins, just like I like to watch the deer wander through my backyard. I grew up with woods behind my childhood home and I’ve lived here for almost 4 decades with woods behind here. I spend time looking out a bay window which gives me a grand view of our back and being it drops off so fast it’s a nice overhead view.

I’m always watching nature. Just saw a woodchuck on the way home this afternoon near the entrance of our neighborhood. So back outside I go to see what else the earth wants me to interact with.

  • All Star game night. That kind of indicates the midpoint of summer.
  • When I was very young, I washed a lot of dishes. I guess I had a flashback while cleaning up from dinner this evening.
  • People are this never-ending puzzle I started long ago.
  • Going to bite the bullet and replace the old laptop. Now comes the difficult decision.

Task to Task

It’s been a fun morning. The sun is up, the baby deer sleeping in my backyard has moved on and I’ve got a list of tasks a mile long to plow through. But I see we have some storms moving through this afternoon and evening.

I had thought about going to the ocean for a day, but obligations before pleasure, so maybe next week.

Haven’t felt my best today. Maybe too much sun this morning. I’m staying the rest of the afternoon. This is the first summer I can remember when the heat is getting to me.

In the space of less than 2 miles I saw a Volkswagen Atlas run a red light, sit at the next light and miss it because they aren’t paying attention. Do 50mph in a 30mph zone and then an illegal U turn at one of the busier intersections in the county.

Never a dull moment on the roads.

  • Being happy is a decision. Like I’ve said, I haven’t made the right decision at times in my life.
  • Isn’t it amazing with some people that they are always right and if they aren’t it’s always someone else’s fault.
  • It’s taken me 6 decades, but I’ve finally learned how to relax a bit.

Visitors

The deer population is getting large again. I’ve seen groups as large as 8-10 together recently. I had a pair of young ones sleeping in my backyard yesterday. And a herd of about 6 including the buck below going through the neighbor’s front yard.

Cute critters when they are young.

But boy can they be destructive to gardens.

I forgot to put up some mesh screens this year around some of their favorites and paid for it.

I’m not crazy about deer ticks either and the more deer I see the more I’m looking at my legs when I mow.

But they got the right to be here just like me.

What’s the buzz

Took a long walk with an old friend yesterday and I hope to repeat that process many times in the future. A few years ago, he moved to southern Pennsylvania, and I hadn’t visited his home yet so off I went. It was an easier drive than I thought so I’ll be more inclined to do it.

We shared many special times together so there are many things there to review, and we are both interested in current events and sharing our takes on them. We are both retired and trying to stay busy.

He turned me on to trekking poles on the walk we took. I’ve never used one before, but it made a difference I feel. And that was just using one. I think when I do more wooded trails I might think about 2 but I’ll start off with one. It was good support for my weak right knee and back.

  • Life is good when you don’t feel the need to get away. But once you think about getting away life becomes better.
  • Determining what idiots not to listen to in life is extremely important.
  • Having friends is important. Picking the right ones is critical.

This getting old stuff is filled with challenges. Today I have a couple aches conspiring against me, but that isn’t going to stop me.

I have a quick errand for a friend this morning and then lunch with my daughter. A couple of home things to attend to, but I hope I can focus on getting some work on my hobbies and read the book a friend recommended for my back. If it’s a good one, I’ll be raving about it here in the future.

As a father I’m thankful for 2 great kids. I’m thankful they are healthy, hardworking, smart, and loving parents themselves now. I’m glad they are better than me. They up the bar on my proud meter all the time.

I try to tell them I love them every chance I get. I write them often and we call and see each other when we can. I’ve busted my gut for them, and they are very appreciative of the efforts. It’s tough being a dad. I’ve taken the blame for stuff, I’ve always wished I could have provided more.

I probably/know of a few habits they could do without. I could relax a bit and I think chew quieter for my son. Hey, I enjoy my food.

Being a father has shown me rewards I didn’t know I had possible growing up. It’s also caused my beard to go grey before it’s time.

One of the many things I’m very proud of is how my children look out for each other. I’ve seen many families fractured but I believe these two will always be close, supportive and there for each other.

A good Father’s Day is waking up feeling confident that your children are happy in life.

Up or Down

Looks can be deceiving. Is this flowing downhill towards me or downhill away from me. For a minute I had to remember where I shot this. The water is actually flowing towards me.

Kind of wondering which way this day will go in terms of direction. I’ve got a blood draw, but otherwise pretty much a free day. I’ll have to come up with a few photo assignments for myself.

First light. Sometimes this low light displays a deeper color. Like watching a sunrise before it breaks the horizon. Sometimes those are the most wonderful colors.

  • Temps in the 40s in late May in unacceptable. It’s ruining my morning vibe.
  • Utilize the tools you have and build more tools.
  • I feel I’m the only one not in a hurry some days.
  • Had our first solicitor come to the door since I put up the No Soliciting sign. Good thing I was asleep because I would have asked why I would buy something from someone who can’t READ and point to the sign. The ironic thing is that the same guy saw me outside later in the morning and I saw him coming into the driveway and I said, “no thank you” and he turned around, not knowing my better half already told him no already. Good thing I didn’t know that or politeness would have been left behind. Because at that point he can’t read or hear so he’s cruisin for a bruisin on that little hoverboard he was riding.

Time for rest

At least this weekend we won’t have to worry about rain running off our feathers. It looks like there could be enough of that because my phone forecast says it will rain Monday through Saturday. Isn’t that sweet. It kind of rules out going to the beach.

I will be too busy with appointments this week to consider it anyway. But the following week might be a different matter altogether.

I think I’ll crash early tonight. Been a full day and I can record the late NBA game and watch it early. I’m tired and sore. Also, kind of hungry so if I stay up, I’ll probably eat a bunch of junk. Plus, I want to wash my car at sunrise and take an early morning ride.

Peaceful day

Along the Patapsco yesterday morning I came upon this green scene. I hope to take another walk along the Thru Trail and hopefully catch some wildlife tomorrow.

Today I have an acre of property that needs attention. I’m about 2/3 of the way through it and some other maintenance, but I think I’ll finish the rest tomorrow before that hike.

The grass was so long I had to cut in low gear. Boy, was it nice doing it on the rider again. That would have taken twice as long with the push mower. I do have to do the lower hill with the push, till I get that path to the lower back made.

I guess summer is on simmer because it certainly isn’t getting off to it’s usual early start here in central Maryland. Have a great evening.

  • Kids do the cutest things.
  • For being in a drought area, I’ve been cutting the grass fairly often.
  • I hope these trees are finished shedding soon.

Goodbye drought

We were in a D2 severe drought level in central Maryland on the map I saw on May 1st. I’m not sure what it’s going to change too, but those rains yesterday and continuing wetness today and beyond will certainly move the needle.

So, balance is being restored. I’m usually not into rainy days but I’m trying to adapt and utilize them.

I was highly unsuccessful in capturing some of that wind driven sheets of rain yesterday. That was impressive. My monopod was in the car, and I couldn’t hold the door and the camera steady at the same time because of the wind. Next time I’ll know to shoot from a window.

We did lose power for a few hours yesterday. I hope there won’t be any repeats today with more thunderstorms.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • There is a mess in this office waiting to be cleaned. This is where I need a staff.
  • I’d really like to get some prints made today. I just got the printer fired up and loaded with photo paper.
  • Feeling different recently. Some good and some bad. But that is the way things roll.
  • I’ve got more done this morning than a few others put together this week.

A Simple Saturday

I’ve had both a busy and lazy day. Wrapped it up with a nice dinner at Kelsey’s Restaurant and Irish Pub in the evening. Great Crab Toast app and Burger with coleslaw. We decided to go out when the power went out from the storms.

My better half’s parents used to dine there often. The place is growing on me. The booths are very nice, and service has always been great, like the food.

BG&E was working earlier in the week on the pole in the backyard and several of the electrical boxes along our street. I’m all for what they are doing because there are less outages and when we do have them, they have been corrected quickly.

The trip to Home Depot on a Saturday wasn’t the smartest idea but we survived. They didn’t have one thing for the mower even though they carry John Deere products.

I did manage to squeeze off a few shots between the clouds, sun, and rain.

I’ve had a major setback. The mower I wanted to purchase won’t fit into my existing shed. And a new shed isn’t in the budget right now even though we need a bigger one anyway. I store a push mower and pressure washer inside because there is no room for them.

So. I guess I’m looking at fixing my old one for the time being, so I don’t have to push cut the whole yard. I’m so ready to be done with the issues with the old tractor. Step 1 is pulling the old dead battery out of it and find a replacement. Completed and it started.

Got the air and oil filter part # and I’ll be off to the store this morning for those and some oil. I hope it last another year till we can get a bigger shed.

  • I went to a new dentist for the first time in almost 4 decades this week. I was pleased.

  • We have lost power 3x today. I was hesitant to even turn the computer back on to post this and I see the skies darkening now.

Learning

I’d like to salute anyone working outside in these conditions. Workers repairing water main breaks, delivering heating oil or collecting trash. To our fire and police out and about in these temps. And many more braving these conditions.

Next I ventured out today to utilize a few minutes after a few errands. Sweat suit w/hoodie and big coat on top of that. I lasted about 40 minutes. I’m going to have to buy some long johns if I want to stay outside for a while in this weather. I’ll wear that one piece body suit tomorrow. Gloved are the issue. I’ve got some old biker gloves I might try tomorrow with the fingertips cut off.

I did manage to capture a few shots on the Patapsco. And the Nikon zoom worked great in 16 degree temps.

Wildlife is remarkable.

When I started out I didn’t plan on shooting ice.

It just caught my eye.

And what illustrated cold more than ice.

I’d rather look at this ice instead of the ICE that seems to be popular in the political ranks now.

I might hit a couple of other bodies of water tomorrow.

Up and smiling

Lots of stuff could be better but I’m up and smiling this morning. Looking forward to some exercise and working on my hobbies today. I’m having trouble deciding if I’m going to make the Miata club meeting this afternoon. I’m sure they are going to be treating the roads, and my ride is all clean under the cover right now.

On the other hand, the roads are going to be a real mess with snow for at least a week with nothing above freezing happening in the 7 day forecast, so this is my last chance. It’s so strange driving that car with the top up anyway.

Well, I’ll contemplate that dilemma later, right now I have some good music inspiring the morning and thinking of the possibilities. So, I took a break from writing and decided to continue the editing project and the song “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith came on as I opened this photo.

And here I was tempted to throw this guy away before that moment. He’s a visitor each summer and made me wonder how old these box turtles live. Google says 25-35 years but possible up to 100. I’ll just look at it like we are sharing the land.

I’ve almost hit him a few times in the yard with the mower. That’s another thing I don’t like about these lawn services with the huge mowers that go so fast. They aren’t worried about what might be in the way. I stop for snakes, turtles, frogs.

I should get some exercise and finish a post about a co-worker who left the job. Have a great morning all.

Crap, only a week before Xmas. I better go shopping. Oh good, my better half has it under control and wrapped. One of the many wonders she pulls off each year.

Photo Journey Day 48 – 12/18/24

I didn’t shoot much yesterday, or the day before. I’m getting slack again, or just busy also. It is the holiday season. So, I caught this squirrel outside the back door yesterday enjoying the warm weather.

We took advantage of the warm weather to go get our live Christmas tree yesterday. Lights go on it today.

I had good intentions with the camera yesterday. I went out in the afternoon to gas up the go-cart and was going to shoot for an hour. But to be honest I got selfish. It was 61 degrees and sunny, so I put the top down and cruised for an hour or more. Just soaking up some sun and listening to music going through the gears.

So chalk one up to a lazy sunny day. You don’t get many of those in the Mid Atlantic in mid-December. And when you do, you see others touched by it on their motorcycles and convertibles with the tops down.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This transfer portal thing is injuring college sports. But it’s a mirror of society. The rich get richer. I’m not sure what happened to the word commitment, but it sure has changed.
  • I might not be able to reach out and touch a satellite spying on me, but my gun and aim are pretty good with skeet shooting, so a drone should be no problem. And if they come in volume, I have lots of friends who love to shoot skeet also.
  • Being a one-man band is time consuming and hard work. But it’s damn good to have a band.
  • It’s almost time to hibernate for a few months. The cover is on the Miata. It’s warm inside. I’m good.
  • I love the smell of a live tree. Well, used to be alive tree.

Fruitless and Fruitful

One of those days I felt like I was spinning my wheels but in retrospect I did get a good bit accomplished. I’ll take days like that as a win.

Photography Journey – Day 43 Recap – 12/13/24

Yesterday was spent running errands and I still have more today but I did make good use of time at home by uploading about 400 new images to the photo site. There is so much work to be done there in organizing, labelling and maybe starting to use a watermark. So much I have yet to learn but the journey is the fun part.

As I was doing some editing, I found a few images that I might attempt to turn into some wood carvings.

A decent size buck appeared in the backyard in the afternoon. He pulled up a nice soft spot and caught a nap for a few hours. That time creating sawdust in the workroom finishing up a horse for my granddaughter kind of ate into my imaging goals.

The sun returns today so I’ll try to make the best use of it and get some better shots.

Recap

I just realized I was a few days behind on a few things. It’s a good weekend to catch up and get back in step.

Photography Journey Day 28 & 29 Recap – 11/29/24

I started this last night and fell asleep. New shooting has been limited but progress is good on the editing and uploading front.

I’m going to brave the cold temps today and try to get some new images. Concentrating on some of the early Xmas decorations so I can start the month of December off with some seasonal spirit. I found a map of some homes in the county with light displays.

I’ve got to finish a few pieces that I’ve been lingering on in the workroom. Mostly for the family so I really should complete those. This one below is just a freehand cut I did from this shell as an example. I haven’t decided how to use them yet. They are pretty good size. The shell is 6.5 inches long and the board I cut is 11.5 inches long.

I thought about burning the wood a bit which gives an effect I’ve seen look interesting. But the grain of the wood seems to match the shell’s flow, and I might emphasize that. I should have taken a shot without the shell on top.

I’ve started carvings of two other shells, much more detailed but also decent sizes. But today I will try to finish a Dolphin and Horse for my granddaughter.

Timing

Time is flying by and so are opportunities. I’ve missed a few this morning but I’ll recover. Like the athlete, looking for the next pitch or next shot or next game. Looking forward, learning from past mistakes is the way to go.

A cloudy sunrise is giving way to sunshine so I’m heading out to test more of this new camera while running a few errands.

A blade and a buzz

It started with one. And then two and that is fine because cicada hornets leave people alone for the most part. Now I have several and it’s hard to walk out back so I’ll have to remedy this situation soon if more come. Rumor is the female’s sting is quite painful. I hope not to find out.

It was cloudy as hell yesterday when I shot these. I’ll get some sharp ones today with the sun out.

Below are 2 of 3 Boing V22 Osprey planes that few by. You should hear these monsters. I rarely see these going over my area. All I knew is something big was coming by so I grabbed the old Kodak I had lying around and got this before they cleared the trees. It was a nasty day out with minimal light and storms on the horizon.

  • At least one of my friends is not having a good technology day. I suspect more are also but too busy to reach out.
  • I’m ready for a great second half of the baseball season.
  • My better half said something about pizza for dinner. I’m excited already.
  • I see a lot of exercise this coming week. So I’m going to rest up today.

Babes and my wood pile

My extended family was back as usual. These two are loving my backyard for play and meals. I’ve seen more wildlife this year than in past seasons. And that is wonderful, except that my better half tires of me saying “Come look.”

I probably get over-excited about it, but I grew up seeing a good bit and continue to love observing nature.

I hooked up my old speakers and receiver and kicked out some tunes this morning. My better half goes out for a haircut later so I’ll blow the dust off them while she is out. It’s been many years since I’ve had them active.

Now I have something I can use for an outdoor party. And it’s time for one indeed.

Dilemma #1 of the day – Do I take the cover off the car, go out in the heat, and then have to put it on later before the storms, or do I leave it on and take the SUV and the AC?

Dilemma #2 of the day – With the CD player inside alive again which to I leave in the house and which in the car?

Dilemma #3 of the day – Woodwork, drawing, or photography? Or all of them!

It’s nice to have easy questions to answer. I like being my boss.

Stay cool and flexible

Be like this guy, stay cool, move slowly, relax. I feel like diving in a pool of water. It’s cooking outside and getting even warmer. I decided to put the shovel down and spend the afternoon inside working.

I’ve got two cameras that need images downloaded. I’m wiring up my old stereo, multi-CD player, and speakers. I’ll have to wait till the better half goes out to test the system out. I need a new needle for the turntable before that can be incorporated.

It’s also time to crank up the printer again. I finished a project for two friends. But I have many more to do so let me open a new pack of paper.

Then it’s back to the workshop and turning wood into sawdust.

My better half picked up a large cherry snowball for me on the way home today so there is no reason to go out now. Except to catch a few rays or lay in the hammock in the shade.

Remember to watch your feet on hot surfaces and your pets who don’t have the benefit of shoes.

Heads up

I haven’t heard the rumble of thunder yet but I believe it’s coming. The equipment and tools have been covered or stored. Things that can be blown are secured.

My back has been feeling it from some time spent with the power washer today. But in looking at the concrete pads I cleaned I’m happy with the effort. Tomorrow should be the final section.

I’m making my grandson some prints of animals they can put by his crib and switch out for learning. I’ll give them to his father to take home this week.

I’m hoping the Yankees even up the Subway series tonight. I’d love to sit and watch the whole game but I’d like to make some progress on some prints, some work on a book, and now that I have a clean space on the workroom table maybe some Dremel time.

Some days when I look back I wonder where the day went. Sometimes I don’t feel that major accomplishment. That is usually because I don’t into account all the small stuff I knock out each day. When I look at the whole, it’s a much better picture.

  • I swear there is heroin in ice cream. Either that or the Freezer has a voice.
  • Sometimes a different view or a second look yields a diamond not seen originally.
  • Don’t delay, go with your gut.

Just chilling

Another great day of summer. The sun is blazing and I’m feeling good. I’ve picked up downed branches, and sprayed for ants outside. The decks have been blown off and the power washer is out and ready to get going.

Putting in some work on the hobbies today and making some progress. The printer was humming away early this morning. Made some family prints and a few for some friends.

Did a few hours yesterday with the top down. A bit warm but still enjoyable. If I don’t get out soon it will be too hot and then the storms roll in this afternoon.

A nice lunch yesterday with my sister and an old fellow graduate from our childhood neighborhood. It’s good to catch up with family and friends. I haven’t been able to connect with my sister much lately but trying to correct that.

  • There are the most beautiful pairs of birds out back. Bluebirds, cardinals, finches, robbins, and a pair of hawks.
  • I’ve been slack making the best use of the tools I have. Too correct that I’ve made my first daily goal to make better use of the nice printer I have.
  • The difference so far here with this high heat, the humidity is low which is unusual. I’m sure it will change but it has been nice.
  • I write and blog because it makes me happy and I hope someone else from time to time.

  • I’m waiting for the shade to come over the hammock so I can relax some more.
  • That segment on AI on 60 Minutes this past weekend confirmed my worry that this is a dangerous time in our history because technology is getting away from us. Among other things.

Tractionless Tuesday

Yesterday felt so good with the top down and the sun shining. A cool rain is falling today and the cover is on the car. No more car pictures today. I know you’re relieved, I was on a roll there.

Back to some nature that visited my back door this week. This guy is my speed. I was too slow to shoot this beautiful red fox in my backyard earlier today. I’ll have to set up before daylight on the deck in some cover to capture him.

Now if I can stay away from the baseball and basketball that is on and get some work done, I might feel like it was a productive day.

The poor weather is the opportunity to catch up on the organization of my photographs. Both print and digital need work as does my photo site. Much editing awaits along with some trashing. And why not now? It looks like the next 7 days have some sketchy weather forecast, so there is no time like the present.

  • Another strong start to the week. A nice balance of chores and fun, hobbies and rest.
  • I love having the house to myself once in a while, to blow the dust off the speakers.
  • The photo assignment of the night is to find something interesting in the house to photograph.
  • Bacon & Eggs – Steak and Shrimp – Breakfast and leftovers, again nice start to the day.
  • My wife found a wonderful shot of my dad holding me on his lap. Looks like I might have been 4-5 years old.

We got home from lunch yesterday and had a box on our front porch. But this one at our front door was from nature and what a nice gift. Why he was up on the front porch by the door I don’t know. Went back out a few minutes later and he had motored off.

A Day for Ducks

What a moist day outside. I’m sure this guy below enjoyed the wet weather today. I did not and I’m not looking forward to a repeat tomorrow. While a glint of sunshine hit this picture none was present today.

This weather makes me so tired. I’m sitting here yawning and it’s just past 8 pm. A week of good physical labor also contributes to this feeling of depleted energy levels.

I’m going to have to look for a second wind here soon. While my best accomplishment was getting quality time with family today, I would still like to get a few hours in on the hobbies.

Food Thoughts

Eating baby back ribs is a real treat for me. I’ve been going to the Corner Stable on York Road for years and had a wonderful meal there this afternoon with my son. I got a full rack with fries and coleslaw. They were tender as always and tasty with their original sauce.

I was telling my son I’m going to get a smoker this spring and try some myself. Now that I have the time for some slow cooking, I hope I can get the taste and tenderness that make me want to stay home and cook them all the time. And then invite family and friends.

It’s time to give my better half a break on Sunday meals. She usually cooks something special on Sundays, so maybe I’ll suggest, that I cook tomorrow instead of her.

  • Some work on portraiture is in store tonight.
  • I never should have come home and sat down in that recliner.
  • Please be careful, ticks are out already this season.
  • I have a lifetime of memories, to still make.
  • My body feels like it’s reverting back, to up all night, sleep all day.

In between

It’s a blooming good day. I was in between cutting the yard, doing the trimming, weeding and ant killing and saw this. Back to work for a little while longer so I can enjoy tonight and tomorrow.

Realize

It’s too bad we don’t recognize how great things are when we are going through them and experiencing them.

Sometimes that relentless pursuit of perfection clouds the real accomplishments.

I wasn’t working for the money all these years. I was working for my family.

Before you know it you’re past it.

Mother Nature reminds us we are here and under her control every once in a while.

The more time I spend watching the sunrise and the sunset and filling the time between with family and friends the less I give a hoot about the Internet or Politics or any man-made object.

Stealth and non-Stealth

Boy, I have a lot of photos that I need to go through and edit, organize, and upload to my Zenfolio site. Also, a number to be trashed. But not so hastily. When I’m going back to previous shoots I always find something I haven’t displayed or uploaded yet that now makes the cut.

I don’t know if that cut means I’m lazy and not shooting enough new things and I’m going back to look for stuff I didn’t think was good enough or if I was harsh editing the first go-round.

I had a few extra minutes this evening and thought it might be more cheerful to send out a brighter photo than the foggy one this morning. That sunny day I hoped for today didn’t materialize often but it was dry.

Mother nature has deposited some more work for me I see in the way of large tree branches down in the backyard. Such is life with property and woods. I hear the winds will continue tonight and tomorrow so I’ll wait till Monday to start maintenance.

Random Thoughts of the Day (2nd edition)

  • Seeing trees with color blowing in the wind is a nice sight. But it’s a short-lived one.
  • Very few go through life without major disappointments. It’s how we bounce from them that matters.
  • The wind I prefer is a warm wind. The exception to that rule is if it’s 95 degrees on the beach I’ll take a cool breeze off the water.
  • When you see grown adults stepping up to help their elderly parents, it’s a wonderful thing. So many don’t have that.
  • If you do anything for yourself when you get older, stay active, engaged, and challenged.

This guy is way ahead of us in going green. I almost didn’t take this shot because he was walking up the back doorframe that I’d sanded a few months back, but not painted yet. But the reason I posted this is because it pointed to the simplicity and opportunity that my cell phone provides that my cameras didn’t.

I’ve always carried my cameras with me no matter where I went, long before cell phones and to this day. But I don’t walk around the house or everywhere with them all the time. But I seem to have my cell phone with me a majority of the time now and have that camera for quick captures like when you open a door and see this guy at eye level.

I never made much use of the camera on my old iPhone. I have a newer one now and I’m reading up on it and giving myself an education. And I’m finding it quite useful. The more I know the less of a novice I am. But then again, I have no issues with being called a novice or an amateur in my field now or when I’m retired.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • At one time in my life, I used to think the late 60s and 70s were a time of great uncertainty. Well, I think we may have topped that.
  • I miss having a cat fall asleep on me.
  • Seems like you develop more patience as you get older when it should be the other way around.
  • I see a pizza in the near future.
  • Most days it’s difficult to find two weather forecasts that even agree on the next 24 hours.

Here we go again

Another fresh week is under way and I’m loving life this morning. Many accomplishments before the sun is barely over the horizon. Great way to start the week. There is a lot to fit in between now and the family cookouts for the coming holiday weekend.

I think I’ll celebrate a little extra. This is the last Labor Day I will be laboring at the job that pays the bills while everyone else is off. But that is next week and this is this week.

This week marks the return to school in our area, so just another reminder to please be careful on the roads. I believe more kids are walking this year from what I have seen reported in the Howard County news on busing.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A haircut always makes me feel better.
  • At some point in history, we have to stop passing down all this hate to the next generation.
  • I get more done when I break it into smaller pieces.
  • Tonight we pick up the pace.
  • The people demanding perfection from the school system on the first day aren’t living in reality.

All I know is I wasted an opportunity to shoot more today and I’m rather miffed at myself. So I’ll try to make up for it tonight with some more focus on displaying some images here at home.

I can’t wait to get some shots of the eagles my friend has next to his home.

New socks can change your attitude. I recently got a new pair of shoes. Now for most of the human race that isn’t much of an event but I look at shoes like a car. I don’t own many and I drive them till they drop. But while I was making that purchase a set of cushioned socks caught my eye.

I’ve never really worn cushioned socks before but today is a good foot day and that translates to a few more smiles. Thank you Sketchers. I think I’ll try a walk tomorrow.

Almost time for me to get my own phone. Since a phone was mobile the employer has always taken care of that need. I was one of the last holdouts that had a flip phone. My iPhone is a 5 I believe so an upgrade will be nice. I think I’ll get one this fall and start the transition so it won’t be an issue when I do pull the plug on the job that pays the bills.
