Parking it

It’s good to be back and it was also nice to take a break. One of my best friends invited us to their bay home for the weekend. We were only able to do one day but it was a very good one. A wonderful early breakfast and lazy morning on the porch before a bike ride. The bay was a bit rough for kayaking.

A shower and off to dinner at The Narrows Restaurant a short drive from our spot on Kent Island. Wow, a great dinner with best friends and our better halves. We ate so well and returned for a muted sunset but a fairly good light show of lightning.

Unfortunately, we ran into that mess about 10 miles from home and crawled the rest of the way. I thought about stopping several times during that span but thankfully there was only another car or two on the road so I just felt my way at a snail’s pace.

Only 8 hours left in the wonderful month of June. It’s been a great one and I’ll remember the many special days with my children and grandchildren. And the closeness I continue to feel to my partner.

I hope this July is filled with highs. There is always one tough day this month remembering a close loss. But many good days are already planned. But first, make the best use of the last of June.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • New production method. Only emergency stopping.
  • I feel like I look healthier with a nice tan.
  • Mirror check, haircut needed.
  • Time to warm up the printer. I gave it a rest yesterday.

Learning the ropes

What makes a teacher great? – The Daily Writing prompt asks a very good question today.

I’ve been a mentor at times but never a real “teacher.” So this reply is from a novice.

Rope City. Photo by Mike Hartley

I guess it starts with mental and physical strength. Listening and compassion. Communicating expectations and goals. Remembering you’re in a profession that is very important but vastly underrated while remaining very upbeat. One who builds on the curriculum in new and interesting ways. An incredible immune system from all the germs the rug rats are bringing in and spreading around. Incredible patience while at the same time being driven. A love of building youthful minds and reaching each one.

I think the ability to endure and keep finding the passion that took you to it in the first place. There must be an internal love of seeing students learn and progress. I’m probably missing a ton and I might just ask my children what I should have written because I consider both of them great teachers.

There are a few of the ups and downs of being a teacher. I know it’s a tough job. You love the children but you see the vast discrepancies in abilities and levels but have to teach them all at the same time. You see who is doing a good job at home and who isn’t by the children’s actions and communications which means you are teaching a lot more than is in the books on everyone’s desks. You are in the middle between administrations and parents and that is a very tough spot at times.

So many factors go into what you might consider a great teacher. Is it one in a poverty-stricken area that works with kids who probably are more hungry than interested or scared because they had gunshots through the night and can inspire these children to do better and greater things with just words and actions?

Is it those few teachers who are singled out for Teacher of the Year awards? Or the masses behind and beside those recognized who work just as hard, who won’t win awards.

I think a great teacher goes to work each day has the best interest of the children in their care and imparts as much knowledge and skill in the given time to every child. And despite our uproar about education, there are a gazillion great teachers in this country. My hat is off to them.

Chop Chop

Have you ever had surgery? What for? – Now the Daily Writing prompt wants my medical records.

I’ve spoken before about fighting some cancers so yes I’ve had surgeries. Also, some other issues with the shoulders and knee required operations. A few others when I was young like an appendectomy. I believe the number is 20 surgical scars so far.

I’ve been told my back in 2 places could be helped with some cutting but I’m holding off on any more time in a hospital if I have a choice.

Shifting into the WEEKEND

I look at every day as a weekend now. But I also feel the excitement from those still putting in the Monday -Friday 9-5 at the office. And a couple of my friends are geared up for this one.

Very few people would have an idea how to move this car. Photo by Mike Hartley

My Friday was filled with grandchildren sharing love and laughs. I’m blessed to be somewhat close to my children so it’s wonderful to share the time with them and help where we can with their children.

My grandson loves riding on the tractor. He found the throttle today. There is a little bit of daredevil in this one. I ask if he wants to go faster. Yeah. We tool around in 2nd after a long ride in 1st. I say you want to go faster. Yeah. I put it in third but throttled down and he was smiling like all get out.

Today I caught some deer grazing out back and showed the kids. They were so excited to see the two baby deer with the mom. My grandson couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t come to him. He kept hitting his side like he does, when he wants his dogs at home to come or someone to come with him.

I could go on about the joys of the day with both of them but I’ll just say it was a special day.

The grandchildren are about to arrive at this homestead so no more posts till later today. It’s such a beautiful day I’m guessing we are going to be outside a good bit.

Been a while

I haven’t tried a move like this in a while. I need to see what spine doctor he has. I do feel more limber and agile than I have in years. I hear rumors that is important in your senior years.

The clearing after the night of thunderstorms. The air smells fresh, and the birds are singing just as daylight approaches. And back to bed, I went. Yep couldn’t sleep around 2 am and was up till daybreak.

What a beautiful day outside. I sat on the deck for a while working on the tan and just watched the clouds go by. I think I might have been 8 years old since I can remember being relaxed and able to enjoy that as I did today.

Feeling good despite the busted sleep schedule. I might have to try a late-night workout this evening. Also hoping to get a few frames in the Nikon and a few miles on the Miata in the next few days.

Open my eyes

Are there things you try to practice daily to live a more sustainable lifestyle? – The Daily Writing prompt asks.

Serious question. I wake up and I’m happy. But then I get hungry so I eat. Then I see my better half and I chase her, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

I worked a lifetime and a half to sustain the retirement (we hope) that we are a few months into.

I stay in motion and in thought. I stay in touch with family and friends.

I laugh when I can. I listen to music when I can. I cruise when I can.

Speaking of that it’s time to pull the cover off the car and being it’s such a beautiful day throw the top down and burn some fossil fuels. And maybe a walk with the cameras.

Exercise is Essential. I wish I could say I do it daily. Photo by Mike Hartley

Heads up

I haven’t heard the rumble of thunder yet but I believe it’s coming. The equipment and tools have been covered or stored. Things that can be blown are secured.

My back has been feeling it from some time spent with the power washer today. But in looking at the concrete pads I cleaned I’m happy with the effort. Tomorrow should be the final section.

I’m making my grandson some prints of animals they can put by his crib and switch out for learning. I’ll give them to his father to take home this week.

I’m hoping the Yankees even up the Subway series tonight. I’d love to sit and watch the whole game but I’d like to make some progress on some prints, some work on a book, and now that I have a clean space on the workroom table maybe some Dremel time.

Some days when I look back I wonder where the day went. Sometimes I don’t feel that major accomplishment. That is usually because I don’t into account all the small stuff I knock out each day. When I look at the whole, it’s a much better picture.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I swear there is heroin in ice cream. Either that or the Freezer has a voice.
  • Sometimes a different view or a second look yields a diamond not seen originally.
  • Don’t delay, go with your gut.
  • I sense a practical joke coming tomorrow.

Still Here

An email today from the V Foundation reminded me that June is National Cancer Survivors Month along with a few stats. I’m one of the fortunate 18.1 million in the US which is 5.4% of the population. Since 1991 the cancer death rate has decreased by 33% it reads.

I’m going to send a shout-out to the University of Maryland Medical Center and the doctors and nurses there who still have me walking around today. Thank you again.

So far, so good. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was talking to an old friend who has had medical issues also and the appreciation and thankfulness for each day is kind of a blessing we are both so glad for.

On the other hand, it’s like this shadow that moves behind you. It’s there but extremely hard to get a glance at it. You don’t know how close or far away from you it is. You don’t even know what it is but you feel that danger.

I hope it’s never or a long time before I’d have to go through those doors again. Photo by Mike Hartley

To my friends who have passed from Cancer, I remember you, I say your name. To my surviving friends, I wish you continued good health. I’ve donated already to the American Cancer Society which means I’ll have to get one to the V-Foundation also soon.

I just had a good idea of how to salute an old friend so I got to run and execute. Have a great afternoon.

Just chilling

Another great day of summer. The sun is blazing and I’m feeling good. I’ve picked up downed branches, and sprayed for ants outside. The decks have been blown off and the power washer is out and ready to get going.

Putting in some work on the hobbies today and making some progress. The printer was humming away early this morning. Made some family prints and a few for some friends.

Did a few hours yesterday with the top down. A bit warm but still enjoyable. If I don’t get out soon it will be too hot and then the storms roll in this afternoon.

Standing tall at the Maryland Zoo. Photo by Mike Hartley

A nice lunch yesterday with my sister and an old fellow graduate from our childhood neighborhood. It’s good to catch up with family and friends. I haven’t been able to connect with my sister much lately but trying to correct that.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There are the most beautiful pairs of birds out back. Bluebirds, cardinals, finches, robbins, and a pair of hawks.
  • I’ve been slack making the best use of the tools I have. Too correct that I’ve made my first daily goal to make better use of the nice printer I have.
  • The difference so far here with this high heat, the humidity is low which is unusual. I’m sure it will change but it has been nice.
  • I write and blog because it makes me happy and I hope someone else from time to time.

Delish

What’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten? – Not a bad question from the Daily Writing prompt.

By choice and default, I have to say freshly steamed crabs from Maryland.

Baby Back Ribs are also in the running because I can do them year-round, but crabs stay #1.

I could claw my way through a few of these soon. Photo by Mike Hartley

Missing it

I do miss riding a motorcycle. The convertible is very nice but that openness of a bike and nimbleness is a special feel. Each time I see a rider with a big smile on his face it takes me back to rides on local roads or when I’m heading to the Eastern Shore of Maryland the feeling of crossing the Bay Bridge and the open roads leading to the shore.

The smell of the salt water as you cross the Route 50 bridge into Ocean City. The quick temperature drops of a few degrees as the water-cooled air filters over you.

Rider entering Mikey and Mel’s cruis’in. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a delicate art of riding a bike. Lots of awareness is needed especially in this area. The power in those machines will test the rider’s skills if pushed. Road conditions have worsened. And the fact that due to Covid when everyone returned to the roads, a significant percentage forgot how to drive.

So while I long to throw my leg over a bike, put the kickstand up, twist the throttle, and go, I’ll just use my memories to satisfy that desire.

To those enthusiasts who continue that passion, ride safe, enjoy, and smile. I’m actively looking out for you. But always remember, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Stay upright, and live longer.

Comfort

If you were forced to wear one outfit over and over again, what would it be? – The Daily Writing prompt is delving into fashion today.

My favorite pair of gym shorts, a University of Maryland Basketball tee shirt, and flip flops (below). Going for comfort over style here. Of course, I’d have to move to a warmer climate to make it through winter.

Backing into Monday

Yeah, instead of firing out, I’m backing into Monday. I might wash the car, cook some bacon, do a little carving or photography. I see a long nap in the afternoon in the hammock being I’ve been unable to sleep much this morning. I think I woke up at 1 am. Good thing I’m retired.

From Mikey and Mel’s cruisin meet this past Saturday. Photo by Mike Hartley

At the same time, I feel pumped and excited about creating something today. Maybe it’s just the musical inspiration I’m getting because I put the headphones on and the hard-driving rock & roll has my body moving in the chair.

Most of you are off again driving and diving into the new workweek. I’m doing the same but for myself instead of someone else. I love my schedule and commute, I can mix pleasure and progress at the same time, weaving in and out of each other.

I think this is the last week of work for my brother-in-law who is a few years older than me and finally retiring. I’m looking forward to some walks and exercise with him.

It’s so nice to unwind after a busy weekend and not have to think about someone else’s business. And given the level of chaos at my former employer (The Washington Post) I’m so glad I’m on the outside looking in.

That reminds me, I have to work on the career wall. The last piece came last month. The Post gave me a framed picture of the front page on the day I started. That along with other mementos and photos and the things from my first career with the local Times papers will make up a corner of my basement soon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Bon Scott could really belt out a tune.
  • A brief reprieve from the high heat today. I think I’ll spend it outside.
  • An early start to the day always feels good.
  • If you can be satisfied even on the toughest days, life is good.

Flawed faith

How important is spirituality in your life? – Wow you’re going there again. I thought there was a recent delve into this area from the Daily Writing prompt if my memory is correct.

The Oxford definition of spirituality – the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

I would say that by this definition, it’s very important to me. And I believe I’m doing a better job at making that part of every day now.

I have many faults and flaws. I try to work daily on improving them. Seeing so-called spiritual people preach one thing on Sunday and then act immorally the rest of the week and then hold themselves up as holy’er than thou makes me sick.

Or if you go stand in front of a church holding a bible upside down pretending to be spiritual.

It might be more interesting to ask and see how people define spirituality.

When feeling blue feels good

I’ve been looking hard at other paint jobs and discovering what I’d like. Not that one is imminent but when it’s time I’ll know. And what better place than car meets? And it allows me to practice some photography along the way.

I probably still won’t go blue but this is a very nice shade with some great detailing above.

Engines keep the world running. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not sure which holds my interest more now. Cars or cameras. If I’m not driving them I seem to be shooting them. And learning more about both is a lot of fun. I hope to pick up some feedback on suspension changes when the time comes to replace the stock ones at the coming Miata meet-up a week from tomorrow.

The more I shoot the more I seem to enjoy life. I doing more experimenting with different settings than I have in a while. And that effort will continue today and into this evening. I’d like to get outside this night to work on some timed shots.

But first, the yard needs cutting. So out I go before the real heat of the day cranks up. Stay cool, stay safe. Well if I followed that advice, I wouldn’t have any fun now, would I?

Active

How do you practice self-care? – Another rather personal question from the Daily Writing prompt.

Good old Google to the rescue – the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

I had to look it up because I have so little practice with it.

Before I get to what I do now, my history might be a list of the things you might now want to do if you’re interested in self-care. I’ve had old acquaintances see me and the first thing they say was “Wow, you’re still alive.” I lived a little hard for parts of my life.

I’ve never been a daily workout guy, but overworked at the job. My diet hasn’t been horrible but it probably falls on the unhealthy side for most of my life. I’ve taken too many risks sometimes in the thought of self-care.

Now I just try to eat smart and exercise a bit. I do things that make me happy and feel good. I stay active in both actions and thoughts. Unless I’m in the hammock.

I went early as did several people to beat the heat but that was a wish that didn’t come through because if you were in the sun at 8 am it was already getting hot. By 9:30 am when I left it was sweltering already.

Probably would have stayed a while longer but had another outside event to attend. I was one of the few convertibles out that I saw with the top down. I’ve mentioned before that I like summer.

I even spent some time in the hammock outside this afternoon. Yes, it was in the shade. I must have passed out because my better half woke me for dinner.

I hope you all either stayed cool or had more temperate weather. Now I’m just waiting for a late-night ride on a warm summer night.

Reflect

How do you waste the most time every day? – Now this is an excellent question from the daily writing prompt. A little self-evaluation can’t hurt.

That varies day to day I’d say. And defining waste can be hard. I’ve spent some afternoons in thoughts and ideas and felt the next day that was a waste of time because nothing panned out from it. But the next time I thought about some of those ideas I modified them or they inspired others and then work was initiated and progress was made. So was the first effort a waste?

Some might look at me later today lying in the hammock in the shade and think I’m wasting the evening away. It may be the thing my body and mind need after a busy mental and physical day after a shower and the temps cool down to unwind.

I know I sometimes spend a few too many minutes watching YouTube videos. Occasionally I find myself watching a little bit too much TV. So I guess that would be my answer.

PB&J

Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood? – An interesting question from the daily writing prompt.

Easy, PB&J. Yep good old peanut butter and jelly. Ate so many of them in the school years that I stopped eating them for a lot of years after that. And now that I think about it I dropped the jelly part when I do make a peanut butter sandwich.

Lots of food takes me back to my youth. Mom’s grilled cheese sandwiches. Steak and cheese subs from Festival carry out. Hot dogs off the grill harken back to my youth along with roasting marshmallows after that.

Picking crabs with friends.

I need to end this post now because I’m hungry. Sorry about the late reply to today’s prompt. I was in NYC for a day with my son. I’ll share some images later. Have a great day all.

Not the normal choice

Who is your favorite historical figure? – A Daily Writing prompt question I wasn’t ready for.

I do like history but it’s a bit after 3 am so I’m in a fog. I’ll go with someone who makes you think and laugh. The Dean of comedians George Carlin.

FDR came to mind because of the decisions and period in history. Muhammad Ali was an intense part of my youth and a big part of history.

Midweek restless

Still not sleeping well. Both the mind and body are still trying to be very active late into the night and early morning. I find myself sleeping in shifts some days. I’ll figure out a plan and see if I can get a grip on correcting it.

A busy day of planning and some research. And some yard work as always. Knocked out some overdue items like sending some family photos to my children. Now I have to get to the prints that need to be made, but that will wait.

I hope to concentrate on capturing some new images tomorrow. Only one or two more zoo photos to share. Tonight I’ll watch a baseball game and then some shuteye for an early rise on Thursday.

Crush

Write about your first crush. – The Daily Writing prompt asks.

My first Crush was from a soda machine at a Southern States store. I had tried Fanta Orange and that was just okay. But Orange Crush was the refreshing drink I was looking for.

My next Orange Crush was in my teens at Ocean City I believe. A mixture of fresh-squeezed OJ, triple sec, vodka, and Sprite. This is a drink that was created on the Eastern shore of the mid-Atlantic I believe.

Okay, I believe my first crush was in elementary school on a sweet young girl named Cindi. Interestingly enough she just messaged me the other day, first time in many decades, and asked if I was going to the HS class reunion next year. So we will be catching up again.

Best nature side eye

Okay, enough of the clickity click. Yes after I got this shot I moved on.

SideEye – Photo by Mike Hartley

Pacing myself with outside activities today. Trying to remember that doing stupid things gets stupid prizes. So what better break to take than creating a post?

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I think I’ll wait to mow till this heat wave is over because I see no sense in helping the grass burn.
  • One of the great things about my home is the nature I get to see.
  • I’m waiting for the shade to come over the hammock so I can relax some more.
  • That segment on AI on 60 Minutes this past weekend confirmed my worry that this is a dangerous time in our history because technology is getting away from us. Among other things.

I bow no more

Well, I will bow before my grandchildren if they want. But not for a job anymore. And that feels liberating in many ways. Working for some was like oil and water, those days are in the rearview mirror.

The perspective change is a nice one. But it’s still very new and strange. Maybe it was just my view of the job that was a little off. I always looked at things like a partnership. But it isn’t. Some are very resistant to ideas, change, or being challenged.

I’ve been told I was rather outspoken at the job. I said what was on my mind. I wasn’t afraid to say the same thing I said to a coworker in the hall to management. Landed me in HR a few times but I have no regrets. That’s okay, I don’t have to deal with that anymore. And thankfully most of the time wasn’t negative.

I see the weight of the job and the imbalanced relationships some fostered on many people. The bigger the company the bigger the gaps a lot of times.

No more bows in this beast. Photo by Mike Hartley

I keep thinking it’s time to get on some schedule around here but I continue to wing it and I’m not upset by the results or feeling. My sleep schedule is still screwed up from many years of night shifts so that does interfere with plans sometimes. But the ride so far is nice.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Laughter and music, a good way to start the day. Grilling up some bacon was a nice addition.
  • We are about to see how educated this country is in the next election.
  • Time to get outside and enjoy the heat.
  • I think we have more kid’s stuff in the house than when we had our own kids.

Visitor

What countries do you want to visit? – The Daily Writing prompt is getting into the travel business.

Do I answer this? Will I start receiving travel offers? Will someone think I have a lot of money because I dream of going someplace? Will a bunch of travel bloggers condemn my choices?

Ah, screw it. I’ll answer as I always do. My better half would love to visit Ireland so I’ll be going there someday.

Me, I want to see my own country. The United States and its wonders. For you who don’t live in the U.S. going from state to state is like visiting other countries at times. I’ve only been to 15 states and Washington DC, so far in my life.

But not to be lazy, I looked through the list of what I believe were 195 countries and found possibilities.

  • Australia
  • The Bahamas
  • France
  • Italy
  • Sweden

We started this first year of retirement by seeing my home state of Maryland. We will venture out after that. Then again, I am a homebody.

For those of you not from Maryland, Old Bay is a seasoning that we love to put on crabs and other seafood dishes. Well, truth be told, on a lot of things. Photo by Mike Hartley

An evening to go out and do some detailing on my car now that the yard work is complete for the day. Maybe some carving after that. So let me get the worktable outside and get moving.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Good tanning weather.
  • Waiting to see some baby robbins out back soon.
  • Hard physical work isn’t a bad thing for the body as long as it’s not overdone.
  • We need to look harder at our priorities and think about the whole.

Fave

What is your favorite thing about yourself? – Interesting question from the Daily Writing prompt.

Having to think so early in the day is tough. Having to pick one thing also is tough. My first thought was that I lived this long and woke up again this morning. But I’ll give it a better try than that.

I see the humor in life and can laugh. I love to laugh. I can make others laugh. And that feels good, really good.

Or – I’m a loving partner, parent and friend.

Sometimes as I’m answering these writing prompts I think about how would have replied differently at different stages of my life. Priorities and desires shift with time. I guess I found answers along the way, instead of thinking I had them all. Not that I do now.

Moving on

How do you want to retire? – Interesting question from the Daily Writing prompt being I haven’t even been retired for 6 months yet.

The word retirement is a word for me that means freedom to pursue the dreams and ambitions that may have been put off or never achieved before. To stop sacrificing my health and time for others and focus on a better approach to sleep, diet, and exercise.

I want to be here for my children and grandchildren. To provide love and support. I want to be able to stay in my home and not have to move.

To have the relationship with my better half that we sometimes put on hold because of work or raising a family or taking care of parents or just too damm tired because of all those things. To go places together or just watch a show or sit on the deck or a drive with the top down.

More visits and activities with old friends and maybe time to make new ones.

I’m slowly building momentum in my hobbies and pursuits.

I’m still new at retirement so it’s a work in progress. And I’m going with the flow. I’m discovering some things I didn’t think about before I retired. I have yet to get to some things I did plan on doing like some volunteer work.

What I learned about it so far. Time seemed to speed up. A lot of friends and family are still working so they can’t come out to play as often as I had hoped. The more you planned for retirement the more comfortable you will be in it. Have a lot to do each day but also be comfortable with days doing NOTHING. Be flexible and go with the flow. Take some time to listen to the waves hitting the shore or the birds singing on a summer morning. But work hard on the things that bring you joy.

I have found or returned to passions that I hope take me into many years ahead. But live each day and do things like it might be your last.

This afternoon, I’ll be doing some ZZZs here. Photo by Mike Hartley

Busy

It’s good to be busy when you’re doing things you enjoy and I’ve been busy doing that. Thursday night with the boys, Friday morning and afternoon with our granddaughter, a dinner downtown, and a concert at Pier 6 in Baltimore for a great show by Little Feat with my better half.

Saturday we finished up with a trip to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore with our daughter and granddaughter. What a run of fun. And now I get a day to savor all the family time I’ve had lately by kicking back and doing little to nothing on Sunday.

Captured a few fellow creatures we share the earth with below on the iPhone. I also took my old Kodak with me but haven’t downloaded those yet. So be prepared to be bored with some more animal shots in the coming days.

Opposing views. So common these days. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll get right to the point. The Zoo is a great place to visit. Families and couples. Saw a few sailors that were visiting from Fleet Week. I didn’t realize the size of this place. I believe it’s 135 acres.

This has kind of inspired me to visit the National Zoo in DC sometime this year.

It’s a fine zoo and maybe I’ll get a chance to go with my grandson also someday.

Random Thoughts of the Day.

  • Take advantage of each day.
  • Milwaukee shouldn’t be upset. Trump hates everything besides himself.
  • I believe I’ll enlarge my office. By cleaning out the junk.
  • It’s getting to be too much of an effort to keep in touch with some people.

Home Sweet Home

What is the oldest thing you own that you still use daily? The Daily Writing prompt would like to know and so would I.

So this requires a little thought, I own some old things but don’t use them daily.

I guess the answer after some thought would be my home of 38 years. The daily use rules out a lot of my older things.

This is a dual-purpose post. Being we are getting into a heat wave this coming week I thought the cool snow might set a lower temp.

Home sweet home. A good Motley Crue song and also my home. Photo by Mike Hartley

Family

Describe one of your favorite moments. – The Daily Writing prompt asks us to recall.

I’ll just go with the first one that popped into my head. I was thinking of our family vacation because of the new beach towel my better half just got me.

We take the family to the shore each year and I was thinking of the feeling I have when we have finished a day at the beach and we are all out to dinner on the bayside, we’ve been served our drinks and everyone has decided and just ordered.

Just then, everyone is relaxed. The kids start talking and laughing. Grandchildren making faces at each other and laughing. I look across at my better half and see her smile as she watches and joins in. I sit back and smile and just listen to happiness and watch the sunset and savor those minutes before the food comes.

Each year I worked very hard to make things like that happen and those moments are the greatest gift I get in return. Well worth any sacrifice I had to make. And now I savor each one a little more.

A nice walk

My better half and I took a walk up some of the Number Nine Trolley Trail in Oella/Catonsville. Then we hiked up and down Old Ellicott City.

It was a day in the low 70s and a very strong breeze so it was a very enjoyable walk.

I woke up

What notable things happened today? – The Daily Writing prompt inquires.

I’m not sure if this is what they were looking for in an answer but I’m going with it anyway.

I woke up, got a shower, and will be off to attend the Doughnuts with Dad with my granddaughter shortly. I’m filling in obviously but she and I are both excited about it. I even hung her invitation on my office wall.

It’s the birthday of a family member. It’s also the birthday of my son’s first pet.

I’ll try to create the best photos and drawings I’ve ever done.

I will spend some quality time with my better half.

I’ll stop and get a snowball today.

In history on this day something that seems relevant today with the Supreme Court in disarray. Google told me: On June 13, 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Solicitor-General Thurgood Marshall to become the first Black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

I think I’ll avoid the news cycle today. That way I can avoid doing what the guy below does all day.

Then right saying

When I saw this shot I thought of the saying “birds of a feather flock together.” Nah, that isn’t right. And then I thought “between a rock and a hard place.” Nope not right either. But then I remembered the appropriate saying. “Cardinals appear when loved ones are near.” And that was so true as my better half was side by side looking over the bridge coming into Ellicott City. We were watching the ducks when I saw this beauty land.

I’m not sure you want to meet who lost that feather. Photo by Mike Hartley

If you listen to the TV long enough you know there is a pill or treatment for everything that ails you. But if you listen carefully you will know that the possible side effects are far worse than what is bothering you.

Had a guy pass me on a blind hill this morning. And I was doing 10 mph over the limit. Just one of a rash of bad drivers I’ve encountered the last few days. I’m really glad I don’t have to drive in rush hours anymore on a regular basis.

Yesterday a woman was kind enough to tell me I had my gas door open as I was pulling off. I stopped and closed it. I pulled back around to thank her and noticed she was older and had a cane. I asked if I could help her and she said she had to go in to pay. So I parked, went to her and she gave me her $20 and I took it inside and said it was for the woman on pump 5 in the silver car. She had the pump in hand already so I gave her a wave and returned home. One good turn deserves another. Maybe someone will save me a few steps someday.

Had a good friend hit 80 yesterday. It gave me pause because I don’t think of her close to that age. I have trouble understanding how my friends are getting so old. Same with my kids who seem intent on passing my better half and I. This keeps challenging my forever young theory.

And life goes on.

Season Sensational

What is your favorite season of the year? Why? – Oh oh oh, Hand in the air to answer this Daily Writing prompt.

Sum Sum Summertime. Hell yeah, I can’t sing the praises of this season enough. Here in the mid-Atlantic state of Maryland that is mid-May to mid-September. So I’m in my sweet spot right now and looking forward to another great summer.

Getting outside again after a cold winter and cool spring is what I long for. The days of extended sunshine, warm nights with windows open. A good tan and that warm feeling that seems to unwind this body that gets so tight during the winter season.

And best of all the TOP-DOWN on the convertible and cruising with a tee shirt and shorts and being comfortable. Sometimes I think back to the motorcycle days and the summer rides.

Of course, there is the beach in the summer with the family. The highlight of my year. That along with a few day or overnight trips I might do on my own or with a friend. I’ve been going to the beach for many decades and it’s just this incredible internal draw that takes me there a few times a year.

But I can have a lot of fun right outside my doors. I love getting up and walking out to the porch or deck and just stretching out and enjoying nature coming to life.

After some long years at night shift, I figure I’m short a bit of sun so I’m doing my best in retirement to make up for the lost rays of light. And I see the sun out now so time for me to get out of this chair and outside. Have a great day all.

Bring on summer. Photo by Mike Hartley

What did they expect?

I read an article in the USA Today on MLB players fearing for their safety, because of threats from gamblers. Well, who didn’t see that train coming? One of just a host of problems facing all major sports now that they crawled into bed with the gambling companies.

We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. I think one player was just suspended for life for gambling. I’m sure people have lost untold fortunes already. They can’t blame themselves for doing something stupid so obviously, it’s going to be directed at the team players, owners, and front office.

As the article implies, people aren’t cheering for the team. They are yelling for their bets on anything from a team win to if a play scratches his ass or not 3x or more.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Gambling will be the death of sports. And it appears to be moving quicker than I thought towards the end.

Hell, the players should sue the leagues for creating an unsafe workspace if you want my opinion. But they are also part of the get-rich-quick mentality.

So much for the history and integrity of the game. So much for teaching kids etiquette at a game. Looks like I lived in a time of great music, muscle cars, and pre-steroid sports.

The money and greed in this country out out of control. And we certainly have enough nut cases out there with guns that something senseless could happen in time.

Night of Inspiration

A free evening to create and challenge myself. Staying focused is tough sometimes. So is staying awake.

I’m trying to work a few more hours each day on my hobbies, so I put in some time while listening to the NBA Finals game 2. Of course, I overestimated my stamina this past evening and ended up falling asleep at my desk and then recliner.

Feeling good this morning, makes me wonder why. Photo by Mike Hartley

That is OK, rest is important also. But an early start today is underway and with the first light of day about to break, we are off and running.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The burgers and scallops from the grill were good last night.
  • Sometimes when you see angry people and bad things happening to them, it’s just karma catching up. So just be happy.
  • If I can make my grandson laugh a lot today, it will be a great start to the week.
  • If enough educated and well-read people vote, we will be fine. If not, we won’t be.
  • When people are honest with you, life is good.

Time

What’s the one luxury you can’t live without? – The Daily Writing prompt asks.

Never really had much luxury in my life in the monetary items. Never had a luxury car or home/homes. Nor jewelry or clothes, or boat and jet. No exclusive vacations or any other traditional luxury items. And that is just fine because I feel very rich.

The luxury of spending time with family and friends and the love and contentment that comes from it. Time to spend on my passions and hobbies. Those are the luxuries I can’t live without.

A comfortable bed and pillow is a distant second.

Don’t need a luxury brand. My little Miata is just fine. Photo by Mike Hartley

Good Life

What are the most important things needed to live a good life? – The Daily Writing prompt inquires.

I imagine the “good life” means a lot of different things to many different people.

The first thing I think of is having your health. It’s something a lot of us take for granted. But for those who are ill, it’s the first thing they would say would lead to a good life again.

Love is next on the list for my good life. Love makes life wonderful. Family, friends, pets – find someone or something to love. Life is very difficult and without love.

Finding your passions. Be it a job, a hobby, or a cause. If you’re doing something you love, life is more rewarding.

Have an appreciation for what you have been given and find the humor and laughter in life.

The good life depends on your perspective and outlook. Photo by Mike Hartley

Sun and Shine

Wasted days and wasted nights. An old song by Freddy Fender. I wasn’t thinking of the song so much as the words. I’ve wasted a few days and nights and I’m working on not letting that happen too often.

Today will not be one of them. Work on the home and yard took a good portion of the day but I did squeeze in a few shots. This squatter (Robin) is not happy with me disturbing the nest they built under my deck. Well, I’m not disturbing the nest but the shed is nearby and they still aren’t comfortable with my presence.

My listening skills are improving. I picked up on the unhappy tone. Photo by Mike Hartley

In addition to laying claim to the deck, he is also expanding to the shed. Guess the territory is being staked out for when the young are born. And given the attitude today that might be soon.

Are you, are you looking at me? Photo by Mike Hartley

Lots of time left tonight to make good use of. So off I go.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I sense a late night of progress ahead.
  • A tootsie pop is a test of patience.
  • I’ve gotten a lot of use out of a battery charger.
  • There it is again, the urge to pick up the pace.
  • Learning is fun when it’s applied to results. Back to the manual I go.

My Partner

Who do you spend the most time with? – A softball question from the Daily Writing prompt.

The answer is my better half of course. My one and only, life partner. Such an obvious answer to me now that we are enjoying retirement together. BUT!

As I thought about the actual amount of time, I quickly reminded myself of the many hours I used to put in at work each week. And the years we worked opposite shifts to raise our family without outside childcare. And even after the children were grown we both had full-time plus jobs.

Then there are the times with friends and the separate times with the kids being they both had activities and sports to practice and play.

And those thoughts scared the hell out of me because I realized we spent a lot of our waking hours apart for a lot of years. And I mean a lot of DECADES. Maybe that is why the time together seems so sweet now.

Was it difficult being apart so much, yes. Were our lives out of balance, sure was. Could we have made better use of the few free minutes we had, sure we could have but that is water under the bridge. But it’s a good message for those of you trying to balance careers, families, and keeping the bills paid. Make good use of the time you have to love as much as possible.

Names I think of today

If you had to change your name, what would your new name be? – Sorry, not my type of question from the Daily Writing prompt.

I can’t think of anything that I would change my name for or what I would want for a new name. Changing the first thing my parents gave me seems so removed from any thought I’ve ever had. I guess if you had to go into witness protection from something but I don’t see that happening.

I also have at least 3 nicknames given to me by my best friends so those aren’t changing either.

So instead, on this 80th anniversary of D-Day, I’m going to honor 3 names of family members who fought in WW2. My Father Jim, my Uncle Bob, and Uncle Frank are the names I’m honoring. Like many WW2 vets, they have passed a long while back. So few are left today and I fear the lessons and perspectives that are so needed today are lost.

WWII Veterans. Photo by Mike Hartley

We have so many people removed so far from the sacrifices so few make to provide the safety and democracy we enjoy. The gap in that needs to be much shorter. We need to learn from our history or we are doomed to repeat it. People who have no respect for our service members or the sacrifices they made and continue to make have no place in elected office.

Learning from toddlers

I got the pleasure of my grandson’s time on Tuesday. He so reminds me of the love of life. The joy of discovery, the look of abandon, the focus of a laser, and the determination of a thousand men. At the same time, simple love and compassion are every glance, smile, laugh, or hug and kiss. The limitless creativity of a mind that has no guardrails yet.

When I lay on the floor, he comes over, snuggles right against me, and pretends to sleep for a few seconds before making sure I’m still awake and ready to play again. The discovery of his senses when trying a new food or treat. His eyes get huge when he likes something a lot. I don’t think I’ve lost that reaction after all these years.

I used to think it was me who would rub off and influence my grandchildren. What a great surprise it is that it’s them, who influence and inspire me.

Hump Day Results

I had a somewhat productive Wednesday and at the same time a restful one. I was able to knock out a few chores before the rains came. But I was lazy in my blogging having not finished this piece. Looks like a turnaround day today for productivity.

Lawn Services

You know what I’m sick of. These landscape/mowing companies coming at 7 am with their huge power mowers cutting neighbor’s lawns. Not that they have someone maintaining it, just at the hour these companies come to do it that pisses me off.

And I can’t figure out why the homeowners accept it. The grass is still wet and left in clumps around the yard. I’ve seen them cut in the middle of rain storms. That certainly isn’t good for the grass. They also cut very short which promotes weed growth which the yards are loaded with. Well, the ones without the spray services I see at some.

Such is life, just another thing to roll with.

MMM Chocolate

Describe your dream chocolate bar. Not a bad question from the Daily Writing prompt.

A mixture of Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, Snickers, Krackle, and Heath Bar. With a Reeses Cup chasser.

This question is kind of funny this morning. I was with my two best friends last night and one of them has this fish bowl of candy bars. We usually attack it on the way out but last night we all passed which was very unusual.

Don’t worry, I’m sure we will make up for it at some point.

The listener

I’ve always considered myself a good listener. Who knows, maybe I’m far from it. But I think I’ll try to take it to another level. You can learn a lot more from listening than talking. You can learn the essence of people by listening well. The more I hear the easier it is to know people.

It might change the dynamic in some cases but most of the people I’ve met and know, like talking so have at it. I’ll listen even more.

Don’t mistake my silence for not having an opinion. Don’t mistake my silence for agreement. Don’t mistake my silence for lack of feeling. Don’t mistake my silence for fear of sharing my opinion.

I’m just deciding who I want to respond to. When to reply, and what to say. And in some cases, I might let my fingers do my talking.

I hear you now. Photo by Mike Hartley

Another book?

Do you remember your favorite book from childhood? – Another book question from the daily writing prompt.

I remember a book my parents got me on Mickey Mantle. I also still have a book I used to pick up from my Dad (Single Lens Reflex Photography) from 1965. I used to look at that book and then that 35mm camera my parents had that I couldn’t touch yet.

The book that saved me a few times as a youth. The Chilton repair manual and tune-up guide for old Camaros.

The Hands Have IT

A few years back, just before COVID-19, I got my better half a gift of a couples massage and lunch. I had forgotten all about it, till she mentioned earlier this year after retirement. She booked the appointment this past week and it was great.

To be honest I was a bit nervous. I’ve never been to a spa before. I’m ticklish so I was afraid I would bust out laughing. I’m not a prude, I grew up in the late 60s and 70s. My body has seen some airtime.

Well, experience is enlightenment. I’ve now added this to the treat ourselves to list at least once or twice a year. I’m sold on it. My body felt great the rest of the day and into the next. A very comfortable night of sleep and the numbness and tingling in my left arm reduced significantly.

I’ve been getting my better half, my daughter, and, my daughter-in-law gift certificates at Christmas to The Spa at Turf Valley for many years. I should have figured something was up with this.

Don’t worry, I don’t have the means to go all country club on you all. Plus something like this is a special treat and it wouldn’t feel so good if it was being done all the time. Without some hard work I might not appreciate something like this as much.

Good Day

I still enjoy washing and detailing my car as much today, as when I was a young man. It must be love. No, it’s not the same car. So I had to take it for a short spin around the county before rush hour started.

I’m moving to the music this fine Monday, with a smile, and a happy heart. I had some old friends reach out and touch me yesterday. It felt good. Not to mention the day with the family playing and feasting together. Plus the bonus of my son helping me with some heavy yard work.

What a way to get June rolling.

Maybe not

What fears have you overcome and how? – The Daily Writing prompt asks again. Or at least I think I answered this sometime before. It’s difficult to remember when you’ve been writing a while.

I was thinking of a few fears I overcame but when I’m honest with myself I’ve never really overcome any of them. I manage them and sometimes overcome them for short periods, but they always seem to come back to be dealt with again.

Health, for example, not the normal aches and pains or flu bugs, but the fear of cancer again I just can’t shake entirely.

Other simple things from time to time like doing a blog post. Seems stupid being I do it daily but there is still the fear of sharing my words and images.

Everyone who lives has a fear for their loved one’s safety in this dangerous world. I manage it but it’s always there.

I try to stay busy living, thinking positively, and hoping for the best and put fear in its place at the bottom of the list or out of mind.

Have a good day. Photo by Mike Hartley

Goodbye May

The beautiful month of May is history. I feel like I’m gaining more appreciation for each day and that feels special. More good times to fit into the memory banks. I’m somewhat happy with the progress of the past month and the effort expended on my hobbies. I have grand expectations for this month of June so I better get moving on them.

The sun is out and there is not a cloud in sight, just a bright blue that is only dotted by a few cardinals and bluejays chasing each other.

I’ve completed the yard work for the day and think I’ll take some photos next.
