The eyes have it

I had the annual eye exam this morning and there has been no substantial changes which is nice to hear a doctor say. I didn’t think much had changed but I didn’t think I needed glasses till I got them either. What a relief to hear a doctor say you’re good for another year. Now if I can get the rest of them on board with this attitude.

I’ve gotten used to wearing glasses. I always keep a pair nearby.

How are these pair of glasses? Photo by Mike Hartley

Low and behold it’s MARCH MADNESS time. And Maryland made it by the first round of the Big 10 Tournament and played again today so that had my attention for a few hours. One of my two best friends and I watched the last game of the season.

Tonight, I’m getting away from this box and trying my hand at some painting. This afternoon I spent working in the yard but hope to put in a few hours editing images before calling it a night on this system.

Saturday resumes the biggest area car show/meet and I’ll probably attend that for an hour or two. The weather isn’t going to be that warm that day so attendance might not be what the summer months bring. Plus, it will give me a chance to grab a sandwich from the sponsor of the event Mikey and Mel’s Deli.

We Deliver

Deliver everything. How friggen lazy have we gotten. I’ve never used Door Dash or Uber Eats or many other delivery services. We will drive to pick up our carry-out. Yes, we have deliveries. From Amazon which does not make me happy because I’m no Jeff Bezos fan.

I find it amazing how fast our society has transitioned to buying online. You can see it caught a lot of people off guard, like the ones who own all those shopping malls and strip centers and invested in building more. These are now great spaces for car groups to meet up or seasonal carnivals. Huge empty parking lots and empty buildings.

Bring it. Photo by Mike Hartley

It spurred a whole new industry, porch pirates. It’s certainly put more, not less trucks on the roads. It’s further reduced human contact and experiences. I bet it increased the use of fossil fuels, think of all the people ordering one or two items at a time. How many times did you go shopping and just get one or two things. You picked up what you needed for a while. You thought and you made a list. Now it’s when the whim strikes.

Not to mention the manipulation that goes into online buying.

Oh, and online ticketing is very uncomfortable to me. I like physical tickets. I don’t want to be forced to take my phone to an event. And that uncomfortable feeling if my phone were to die.

If you think we reduced our destruction of forest for the newspaper industry which is disappearing, for the most part guess again. It has been replaced by the cardboard box industry.

Yes, it has a lot of great advantages for the elderly, disabled and those needing meds fast and many other things. But I liked running into neighbors or old friends at the store or parking lot. Yeah, I’m older so I’m not with this because I think I experienced something better and now it’s getting lost.

You’re NEVER NEVER going to see me buying a car online. If I can’t get the dealer to flip me the key and let me test that stick shift it’s NEVER NEVER going to be a deal.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I haven’t added my thought on Trump and his team of knee benders being one of the most disgusting groups of human beings on the planet for a day or two now have I. Well, there you go.
  • March, a month of temperature swings.
  • I wonder if delivery will be free if gas starts getting outrageously expensive.
  • Nice to be able to get a few tanning days in March.

I’m Up

Just went looking around for someone else who is up. Didn’t find anyone. Pretty normal for this time of night. No problem, I’m an expert at entertaining myself. Loneliness is not possible when there is always me myself and I to have a group chat with. I’ve always been a bunch of mixed-up personalities anyway.

Just put the headphones on so I won’t disturb those resting. I needed some music this morning. Was a bit down last night and fell asleep early so I’m up early. What a tangled mess I weave. Music is helping as it always does, getting my thoughts moving in a more positive direction.

It might not look like it but I’m up. Photo by Mike Hartley

Funny I just had a flashback to when I worked a shift where I was getting off work around 3-4am in the morning and those drives home on hot summer nights were great. The pinnacle of NO TRAFFIC. Once I cleared the city line and got onto the highway, I would crank up the volume on my favorite songs and just cruise along at the speed limit or less because of all the wildlife out at that time.

Those were some of the most relaxing rides imaginable. Just having completed a long shift. The dark, quiet and empty highways. Yeah, there was the occasional drunk who finally found his/her keys an hour after the bar closed still trying to make it home. And yes, I used to see a lot of them. But for the most part it was a sweet trip.

Speaking of sweet trips. Today was a top-down day filled with country roads. Boy was it beautiful and did it feel good.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hope I can go through the rest of life and not need all those drugs I see advertised on TV.
  • Getting my mind to slip into exercise mode is the trick I’ve learned to be consistent.
  • Party like it’s your last week. Thought inspired by the band The Doobie Brothers song, The Doctor
  • When a child smiles it’s genuine. When an adult smiles you can’t always be sure.

Century

Write a letter to your 100-year-old self. – Now there is an interesting task from the daily prompt.

Dear Mike,

First, congratulations on your making it to the century mark. You are a medical miracle at this point and have defied just about everyone’s expectations.

Secondly it must have been great to have that last 30 or so years to fulfill our dreams. You had better finish a few books and of course built an incredible library of images and art.

I hope our better half is still by our side. Your great grandparents by now. I know you’re driving a stick shift of some kind, be it the old Miata you kept or the wheelchair you might be in.

Probably still rocking out to our old classic rock as you are the 3am hour of night like tonight.

You had better still be laughing as best possible and making others laugh.

I’m guessing you have had to endure some great losses along the way. I know you had losses throughout life. That must be tough not to have many if anyone left to share them with you.

If you’re getting this message, take a ride in this. You will both be 100 years old and still kicking. Look out at the ocean, remember your young self with your family on the beach and in the pool.

This will be 100 along with me. That would be kind of ironic. My dad had a 57. Photo by Mike Hartley

Just strolling through life

Saw a friend out and we acknowledged each other. He’s not too talkative. Occasionally he has an attitude where he will stomp his foot which means I’m not in the mood for it today. Sometimes though he and others will stand there and let me yap at them. They will even resume grazing.

I think I’ll name him soon. Photo by Mike Hartley

I won’t be strolling the next two days. I’ll be out strutting. I’ve been waiting all winter to get that top down on a nice day and stretch my legs in that Miata. Also, a nice long walk outside instead of the treadmill will be nice. I think I’ll get some carry-out also and have lunch outside. It’s been a while since that treat.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Does it feel like the good old days are behind us?
  • I spent a couple of hours working for free for Verizon again today troubleshooting their issues. This is getting old.
  • The weekends activities are wrapped up. Time to relax and enjoy a quiet evening.
  • If you like Krispy Kreme doughnuts tomorrow is the day to go. A free dozen with a purchase of a dozen glazed.

Obscurity

There are benefits to being a rather obscure blogger. I don’t get hate comments, so far. My grammar or images might not be the best that day, or many days. That’s fine with me because I’m learning by doing.

I’m fine with it because it’s kind of a selfish effort. I do it for me and anyone else who could get enjoyment out of it. Be it a laugh, an emotion from a picture. Or maybe a random thought that connects with someone.

I do it for my family so they might have something to reflect on later because I know they are too busy to keep up with this now.

I create in hopes that something comes together that fits in with the wonderful work I see others create with such ease and frequency.

I’ve been reminded through my professional career that it’s the journey that’s the fun part, not the destination. So, I’ll get my lunch pale, tools and gloves and get to work each day.

Put in a good day’s work. It’s always rewarding, even if you encounter a few a-holes along the way. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve always liked to work. I don’t like to refer to my hobbies as work, but they are work. I devote time and effort to them just like a job. Just with a lot more personal passion and fun, mixed with the limitations of time being a senior citizen and busy grandparent.

Sometimes in life I’ve felt obscure, almost invisible. Lots of times actually. And the older I get the more that feeling seems to come around. I guess that is why I feel okay with it. I’m cool with doing my own thing and enjoying life as I cook it up each day.

Waiting for your ship to come in

Waiting for your ship to come in? Referring to becoming successful or wealthy as the dictionary says. Not me, because I’m not interested in it either. I do feel successful in my own ways but not in a way society would judge as successful. And I have wealth but not the monetary kind.

I think I’m happier not chasing riches or fame. I’ve chased financial stability, which is also quite illusive, but never riches. Success is not measured by others. You have to be good with yourself. I bet if Michael Jordan had only given 50% effort and was still the best player in the game the success wouldn’t have been as sweet.

That term – waiting for your ship to come in – is one I think of when I see people playing the lottery or gambling. That ambition for much more. The disappointment when it doesn’t come. I’m drawn to that, but I know how dangerous that mindset is for me. So, I don’t gamble.

I refuse to do these betting apps or services. It’s too easy and too addictive. When I think about gambling, I think there is someone who is hungry, that could use a meal or sick and in need of a cure. So, I donate to those causes instead.

I don’t know where the right balance is. My current impression is that we swung too far the other way and have incorporated gambling and sports together and I worry that it could be the death of some sports when coaches, players, refs, owners get caught up in it. It’s just too much money for some people to pass up.

Many don’t even realize their ship has already come in with the gifts already received. That is kind of sad. One of the good things about not having it all is you appreciate what you have more. I look at some having it all in monetary wealth, as a burden.

Random Thoughts of the Early Morning

  • I get to see children smile later today. I’ll let that good feeling carry me till then.
  • Care about yourself, there can be many times in life where you will need that.
  • Work on creating a space in life where you can thrive.
  • It’s a very exciting family day.

The spot to be

Good morning isn’t it wonderful to wake up to another day. I’m beginning to wonder if the sun is going to make an appearance again. Talk about your dark, foggy, wet dreary weeks. Here is hoping for much better days ahead.

I’m looking forward to getting to the beach before sunrise and laying in the sand or standing out on the rocks watching the day begin this spring, summer and fall.

Life is a beach. Photo by Mike Hartley

I could spend the day looking out over the water.

I took my first Uber this year.

I’ve never watched UFC MMA fighting. But I love the sport of boxing.

I always had a beard because I like it. But the time and expense I save by not having to shave each day is a nice side benefit.

I like placing good memories in my children and grandchildren minds for all time.

When I retired, I dropped keeping up with technology like a hot potato.

Did you ever have a day without one problem? Me neither.

I used to like watching CBS.

I finished my first painting in decades this year.

I have the desire to ride a skateboard again, but the sense not to.

This has been a year of big changes. Keep’em coming.

Ignoring spell/grammar check at times, makes me feel powerful.

Swimming Along

I didn’t answer the daily writing prompt till almost 11am this morning. Usually, I knock that out well before 6am. I was up early this morning at 12:30am but failed to do it before I went back to bed for a few hours at 6am.

Now I’m feeling better and I’m back in the swim. I’m getting my weight back under control. I got a little sloppy with sweets the last few weeks.

This is going to be a good year. A good start and hopefully a strong spring season ahead. I’m feeling a little more inspired today hopefully I can maintain that and make it a productive Friday.

There is a song by The Who called Who Are You. I find asking that of myself often. I think I’ve discovered it’s a journey of constantly finding out more about yourself. Just when I think I know myself pretty well, I’m amazed at finding something new. One might think by this age discoveries would be far and few between.

On the contrary, you’re tested more as you age into your senior years. You find courage and mental coping abilities you never suspected you would need. Challenges still are there every day plus some you didn’t count on.

I’m trying to embrace this stage of life. Mentally, I still feel very young. The grandkids seem to think so because they like playing with me. I’m trying to stay more active than I’ve been in years. I escape depressions faster. I’m still learning each day and figuring out what is important.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Even in retirement I wear a suit for half the year. A sweat suit that is.
  • Hegseth is really overcompensating for something.
  • Sometimes I miss standing in a crowd of tens of thousands of people at a rock concert singing along to one of my favorite bands. But watching live performances on YouTube is a lot more comfortable now. Not that I don’t get out of the chair and play a little air guitar.
  • Another day and Trump is still a blight upon this country and the world.
  • There is wealth in happiness.

A cold season

This season for the University of Maryland men’s basketball team hasn’t gone to well. It’s one of those years when I don’t get to pick them in a pool to go all the way again. I’ve been following them for 58 years, and they have made the tournament 31 years. We are used to sitting on the edge of our seats on selection Sunday to see where we are seeded in the tournament. We plan for the tournament games together. Not this year.

Last night was their next to last regular season game. And it didn’t go well against Wisconsin. The Badgers are 6th in the Big 10 and a lock to make the tournament with a 20-6 record entering the game.

Truth be told, Maryland is not out of it yet. They would have to with the Big 10 tournament, not being a gambler, I would still say the odds of that are off the charts. So, the likelihood of a much different March Madness this year looms. Oh, I’ll still watch the games because it’s still the most exciting thing in sport on TV.

My friends have been pretty hard on the new coach Buzz Williams this year. I hope to prove them wrong with a good season next year and remind them of their jump in judgement.

Well onto a new day and new challenges. I’m off to a good start with exercise. Also getting busy with some future plans for spring and summer.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I see the Senate failed to do their job yet again yesterday to reign Trump in.
  • I wish some memories of my early youth didn’t stand out so much.
  • Started way too many projects at one time.
  • For a long time, I didn’t know how to change my attitude on my own.
  • There are situations in life when you realize the effort isn’t worth it any longer, it’s kind of a sad day.

List

I just realized I have a lot of lists. I guess it’s a lot, it feels like a lot now that I’ve counted it. And even on those lists, there are sub-lists. Either I’m really organized or just a poor finisher who never completes anything and therefore list just grows.

The truth is somewhere between those two. I do complete and cross off a lot of stuff on my lists. But there is a lot of stuff on those lists still.

The lists are good. It’s a spot to come back to when you lose your way. Looking at them helps you sometimes prioritize better. Sometimes you have something on the list that one day you say, I don’t want to do that and remove it.

Lots of people use lists. I see a lot of them in the grocery stores and during holiday times. I see people walk into the auto repair shop with a list. You see people buying lunch for a team of people with a list.

Sometimes when I get to run errands, I’ll write myself a list, so I don’t skip by a needed stop.

I like it when we forget our list. Both my better half and I have called each other to take a picture of the list and text it to us because we left it on the counter and went out the door without it.

I guess people still ask for birthday and Christmas gift lists.

The List of my Lists

  • General To Do list
  • Photography list
  • Paint and Drawing list
  • Woodworking list
  • Blogging idea list
  • Home project list
  • Yard project list
  • Travel list
  • Reading list
  • Medical appointment list
  • Car modifications list
  • Exercise list
  • Watching Grandchildren list

Autobiography sentence

The daily prompt asks – You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?

Wow you’re still alive!

I don’t know why I chose that sentence. Someone once said it to me, and it popped in my mind when I read the prompt. I never thought about writing an autobiography. In some ways when I think about writing one it is appealing. I don’t know how interesting my story would be. Lots of ups and downs. Lots to be thankful for. Lots of scars and pain. A lot like other people’s lives.

Uncle

This doesn’t look like spring to me. Snow on Monday and Tuesday morning. Then freezing rain and then rain and now we have fog. At least the cover is on the car, and I don’t have to go anywhere if I choose not to. Not the start to March I was looking for.

Monday was both a productive and lazy day. A good start to the morning but I faded before lunch and took a nap. The late afternoon I’ve gotten very busy and I carried it into the early evening. Passed out at 9:30 and was up at 2am this morning having some fun.

I saw my daughters and granddaughters’ school was delayed 2 hours yesterday. Hopefully the last delay of the year for them.

Tuesday was productive editing photos, making more prints and uploading images. Felt tired and crashed early

Photography Thoughts of the Day

  • A good day is when many prints come out of the Canon Pro-100. Today was a good day.
  • Finished shooting the remaining old cameras this morning.
  • I always share my work with a bit of trepidation discomfort. I fear that it could be substandard and that if I thought it was good that it wasn’t acknowledged that way. It’s a daily challenge I’ve grown to love.
  • I’m redesigning my office walls with hundreds of photos. I like being surrounded by the faces in my life.
  • Learned a few more things on my camera today that I didn’t know before. I need to remember my old moto – RTFM

Getting a leg up

Always someone wants to climb the ladder higher. Some willing to step all over you. I’m glad to be out of that rat race. When I started off work it was much more team orientated. When I left it was like we were set up to compete against one another. A bit of a contrast but that is life, I guess.

I have a 28-foot ladder and that looks like only the second highest along this wall. Those taller ones are impressive.

I try to avoid ladders now but being a homeowner makes that impossible. The occasional cleaning of the gutter guards and power washing the siding require some ladder time. I’ve pretty much cleaned out the attic so no need to get up there. My better half doesn’t like me on ladders since one of our neighbors fell and passed.

I’m not climbing social ladders, I’m not climbing political ladders, I’m not climbing popularity ladders. I guess the climbing I do now is when I set the incline on the treadmill.

Walk

I’m walking much more this year and I’m feeling better for it. I’ve exceeded last year’s effort already and hope to increase my time as I go throughout the year. Most days my back feels better for it. At least I’m having more good days than not. Days when my back does ache, it’s sometimes difficult to get on the treadmill. And I usually limit the time those days.

I like walking in and around Ellicott City. Photo by Mike Hartley

Soon I’ll be outside again, and I’ll need to remind myself to watch the terrain a bit. Plus, the difference when I’m walking outside, is that I’m usually carrying a camera of some type.

Then there is the hiking walking when I choose that route, more inclines and dips, uneven footing even on worn trails. One thing I have to get this year is a harness strap vest for heavy cameras. I’ve seen a few that have one mounted on the middle of the chest and one on the hip. They look like they distribute the weight much better than just having a heavy camera around my neck which hurts both my neck and lower back after a while.

Today I’ve gotten a good start already having put an hour in on the treadmill.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The government clown show continues. And it gets worse every day.
  • Saw a pair of beautiful foxes hunting in our backyard yesterday.
  • The time in between eating bacon is the hardest.
  • Reading more each day feels good.

Objects

What are three objects you couldn’t live without? – Asks the daily writing prompt.

At first, I really had a hard time thinking of objects I couldn’t live without. I don’t like to think there is any material thing I could live without. But really, it’s a good question to think about. Simple things like fires or natural disasters can take everything in the blink of an eye.

Thinking of losing everything and only keeping 3 things would be tough. So, you start to think about what isn’t replaceable. The little things over time from the grandkids, my own children, the little things my better half and I have done together and saved. The things we have saved from our parents that mean the world to us.

I’d be very depressed if I lost all my images, artwork and writing. I wanted to include this in the 3 but that would be selfish. I would go on living and creating new ones.

I really like my old Miata and driving that. But I lived without it. I grew up without all the digital devices we have today so I know I can live without them.

I guess I would have to pick 3 personal items. One of my mom and dad’s things I’ve kept. Maybe his burial flag and her scarf. Next would be a personal item from my life with my better half. Maybe the ring or a photo of us when we were young. Last would be a big chest of all the photos of the children and grandchildren we have from birth to now.

Held up well after 8 plus decades. My grandmother gave this chest to my father before he went into the Navy in 1940. Photo by Mike Hartley

Here’s the beef

Saturday, I found the gift card I got for Xmas from my better half to the local pit beef stand called The Canopy. I had a taste for a pit beef sandwich with BBQ and tiger sauce on it, an order of fries and their coleslaw is great so an order of that also.

The Canopy. Photo by Mike Hartley

Sorry, I get excited about food. And we like The Canopy and have been going there for decades. My better half said her pit turkey sandwich was the best she’s ever had.

On a mission. Photo by Mike Hartey

When Mission BBQ opened just a few hundred feet down the road a few years back, I thought this might be a serious challenge to them. But The Canopy seems as strong as ever though. I’d rather support local businesses than chains. Not that I haven’t been to Mission BBQ a few times.

I’ve got to come up with a few menu items for the coming week. I’d like to cook at least 2-3 dinners a week. This is a busy week coming up for my better half.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Do you ever feel you’re being tested without knowing it.
  • I don’t like it when my better half doesn’t feel her best.
  • I’m surprised to still see trees standing with the number of sticks and branches down.
  • Progress during difficult times is even more rewarding.
  • I’m thinking about all the people in harm’s way now because one man has an ego problem. And what is this going to war without Congress approval? Maybe that body of our government could grow a pair and get control of the situation. Of course, that should have happened long ago, but they advocated their power. The sad part is it’s just a distraction for the ills at home and the Epstein mess.

And we’re off

Is a week a week?

A new week, so says the calendar. I’m not really on a schedule, but so many others I interface with are on that work schedule which begins today. Mine has no beginning and end. It’s just when I decide to take a break.

It’s somewhat different not having that weekly reset. The weekly staff meeting reviewing last week’s work and the coming weeks ahead hasn’t been part of my life for a few years now.

Those short- and long-term goals list that the manager wanted is long gone and I just add and subtract as I want now. Nobody but myself reviews my performance.

I’ll always be wishing my children a good week ahead on Monday. Asking my better half what we have this week is still pretty much my routine. And wishing my best friends a good week at the job is a Monday habit even before I retired.

The shows on tv sometimes remind me of the day of the week. Doing the daily blog always keeps me aware of the date and day. But the further removed I get from that weekly cycle, the more relaxed and freer I feel.

So, while I wish you all a great week ahead, I’m taking it more day by day and seeing what life brings me.

I haven’t missed the commute back and forth to work at all. But I have become too much of a homebody and need to get out more.

In the background I hear the local news talking about possible snow. I’m going to keep a brighter outlook and ignore that nonsense. I can hibernate for a few more days if needed.

Photography Thoughts of the Day

  • Uploading prints to my photo site is pleasing. Making prints makes me happy.
  • One of today’s assignments is to finish shooting all the family cameras I have collected. I’ll post them here when finished editing.
  • An old camera can take a fine picture. At least that is what I’m hoping, most of mine are old.
  • Textures have been appealing to me lately. I ran a few shots of wood this past week. I’m photographing some more.
  • I’m going to try to finish reading the book – The Photographers Playbook in the next day or two.

Soaring

I got to spend the day with my son and grandson attending a University of Maryland basketball game and then having a meal together. What a great time that was. That little guy makes me feel so loved. He wanted me to carry him a lot today and he sat on my lap almost the entire game. And he wanted to sit by me for the meal. Of course I had to share my milkshake with him.

Back to being a solo pilot. Photo by Mike Hartley

Unfortunately, Maryland didn’t win the game but I’m a winner today without a doubt. I hope I’m granted many more days together with all my children and grandchildren. This is a special week coming up also with another grandchild’s birthday celebration.

It’s also a week where the schedule is pretty open. We don’t get many of those weeks, so we had better take advantage of it. I know I’m making lots of plans already. Most of it is working on the hobbies.

A summer sunset in Ocean City MD. Photo by Mike Hartley

Photography Thoughts of the Day

  • I could make better use of my equipment. I don’t take my tripod and monopod with me enough and I’m getting older and less steady.
  • Putting more images up here and being less wordy is a goal. More of my original intention also.
  • I don’t have any editing tools to speak of. Just the Nikon NX crappy package that is available. And I don’t do much with that except the occasional crops and overall tonal adjustments if needed. I’m almost scared of getting something better because I don’t want to spend my days editing.
  • I guess I follow journalistic rules for the most part. If I alter a photo much, I’ll label it an illustration.
  • As far as the photo challenges go, I hope to participate in a few more than I do now, but I hate committing to more if I can’t be consistent at it.
  • This month I’m going to challenge myself to shoot much more each day.

Knot today

Some days are just like that. Where that old saying “fit to be tied” gets thrown around. Be it too many lose ends at the job or home. Or projects at a standstill. Or that bill you know you paid but they are claiming is overdue.

Knot City. Photo by Mike Hartley

Is your body or mind fit to be tied? Not eating right. Not sleeping right. Too much stress. Zipping from one thing to another and then zipping back again.

Are you at the end of your rope. Having trouble hanging on. Does the climb look too great. Is the wind blowing you off course.

Take the Climb. Photo by Mike Hartley

Well, hang on because that is just life. It’s what happens when you’re not having a good day. On the upside, you will have lots of company struggling with you.

I’ve always found it challenging to get out of a bind. To overcome a situation. To make that difficult payment over and over. To get over a loss.

But over time the sheer number of challenges takes its toll, and I find myself not wanting to deal with them as I used to.

Flying Solo

Being a one-man band is both fun and challenging. It is also limiting in ways. Time to work on all the ideas and projects just runs out before they all can be accomplished. And I’ve now accepted that and it actually helps me prioritize better now.

The only limiting factor is how much I’m willing to do. And lately I’m finding I’m doing more. Not just blogging but in all facets of my work.

Skimming the waves of life. Photo by Mike Hartley

In ways we are all flying solo through life. I’ve been thinking about that and feeling it as of late.

Saw an interesting article – If you grew up in 70s, you likely developed these 5 rare traits most people don’t have today. I could relate to a lot of that.

This season is typically lacking the color we find in spring, summer, and fall. But occasionally it appears. It’s almost time to think about the last snow of the season. I see some mixed precipitation on Tuesday and I’m hoping that is it. We have had snow in March, but it isn’t that common and I’m so sick of the cold weather a really warm March would be nice.

The last day of February is upon us. Not my most productive month but I’m somewhat satisfied with the effort. Hopefully I’ll emerge from hibernation soon and resume my nature shooting.

I don’t know what is on the agenda today and I’m afraid to look at the calendar or any of my to-do list. I’d like it to be one of those days where I just go with my flow and let my thoughts guide my actions.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I see our lead IDIOT has now started another war we don’t need to be in.
  • I smile when I think about my grandchildren waking up and their big smiles.
  • It’s going to be an outside day today being it’s been so long since I’ve seen sunny and 63 degrees here.
  • My back hurts looking at the number of sticks and branches down in the yard that need to be picked up.

Phase out

Describe a phase in life that was difficult to say goodbye to. – An interesting ask by the daily prompt.

I was going to say it was difficult to say goodbye to the career and in some ways it was. You don’t do something all your life that you like and don’t miss it a bit. I really do miss the teamwork of working on projects together.

The phase of life that I miss the most now is that healthy period. Not that I’m sick now, I just experienced a few setbacks after the age of 50 and now that I’m well into my senior years, I miss that carefree mindset and days when you didn’t think about doing something, you just did it.

Those days have passed. I think a lot more about each step some days depending on the terrane. I used to think eating healthy was eating regularly. I didn’t think about making a move in basketball before. Now I wouldn’t attempt a lot of stuff. I miss the days of springing out of bed. I miss being able to run fast for long periods. I miss my back being able to withstand anything instead of struggling periodically.

The senior years are about being smart, knowing limitations and risks and adapting to your changing body and most importantly staying active despite the challenges.

Alone

It’s odd having the house to myself overnight. My better half is at my son’s home watching his dog. She returns later today so things will be back to normal.

What I did enjoy was being able to listen to music through the speakers instead of having to use the headphones in the middle of the night when I’m usually up. I liked taking the trash out at 3am because that is when I remembered to do it and didn’t have to worry about waking her. I liked leaving all the dishes in or by the sink till I put them away an hour before she returns.

Having dinner at 10:30pm wasn’t an issue. I enjoyed having the bed to myself again, like I did when we were on two different sleep schedules. I danced through the house on my way to different rooms because I had music loud enough to hear throughout the house.

I used the Dremel tool in the middle of the night. Oh yeah, that reminds me. I usually crank up the temperature a few degrees when she’s gone for any length of time, but I always return it the previous setting well before she comes home.

I parked the cars in odd spots, which I’ll move back soon.

Well, let me do that and take the recycling out, bring the trash can in from the road, adjust the thermostat, take care of the dishes and pick up my clothes and take a shower. And that pile of shredding that I have to finish. I’ve been promising to vacuum the basement also.

And if I feel motivated, I must renew my tags and get the emissions test done on my car. I better get my behind in gear.

If you’re torn about issues. Pick up the pieces and move on. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m taking a lot more pride in small gains. Because sometimes a lot of small gains add up.
  • With so many people I know passing in recent months, it really gets me busier every day.
  • Even though I might not add it each day I still feel Trump and his group of Nazi friends need to go. Now that idiot is going to get us in a war.
  • I see Holman has joined Mike Johnson in arguing with the Pope about the Catholic Religion. Talk about people feeling holier than thou.

Good morning

What a night out with the boys. Lots of laughter, tacos, vacation discussions, fishing trip plans and solved a lot of the world’s problems. Unfortunately, the Maryland men’s basketball team didn’t come out with the victory, but we had a good time anyway.

Pony Up. Photo by Mike Hartley

A cloudy day so far so I’ll concentrate on indoor photography and painting. I will venture out, maybe the hardware store for some Dremel bits. I have to pick up a car from the garage.

I’m getting disgusted looking at the mess this office is. Well, it’s not horrible but it needs some maintenance.

This is going to be a good day. Even though I’m going to have to put the cover back on the car before the rain comes later.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Never order ribs when wearing a long sleeve shirt.
  • The commonality in my problems is me.
  • I’m thinking a new chair for my office is in the works.
  • I like the idea of getting Fisher’s popcorn, but I always eat all of it.

Let it Roll

It would be nice to have a classic car. I’m working on one now. It’s turning 10 and I’m pretty sure I’ll be keeping it till I can’t drive anymore and then a few years more just to sit in it or have someone drive me around in it.

I can’t get enough of classic cars. Who knows, maybe I’ll pick one up someday. The designs, chrome, wheels were all so unique. In the 60s and 70s if 10 people saw a getaway car they could tell you the brand, year, model, color, 2 or 4 door, trim package and engine size because that was on an emblem on the side.

Today you would get – it was grey, maybe dark grey, maybe metallic, somewhere between a 2010 and 2026, couldn’t tell how many doors it had. It could have been a Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai, Subaru, Mazda, Kia or Honda something. It was a possible EV, Hybrid, Fuel sucker. If 10 people saw this getaway car they couldn’t agree if it was a sedan, crossover or SUV.

I didn’t start out with the intention of having so many car shots in the blog but I kind of like hanging out at the shows, getting ideas about paint colors I like and modifications. And then dreaming about an old muscle car sitting in the driveway next to the Miata.

But that would lead to all kinds of problems because then I would have to modify the muscle car. And then get a trailer for it. Oh, and buy a pickup to tow it to events of some distance. Well, hey, I can dream.

I’ll be happy if I can keep that current car running for a long time. Because after driving it this evening for the first time in a month, it’s one of my great joys.

Soft

This green bottle used to be my penny jar. The light coming through my office window one morning cast its shadow. Almost looks like a painting.

Sometimes the simplest shots are right in front of us. It’s funny the difference some days make. There are days I struggle to find what I like or any opportunity to get something good. Other days I wander and just turn and fire, low and behold I come home with a wealth of images.

I guess that is that natural ebb and flow of luck and energy and the right time and right place.

I didn’t get as much shooting done yesterday as I hoped. Today is another opportunity, but one challenged by chores and tasks. Also, a Maryland game to watch later and a few miles on the treadmill. And the other list I haven’t checked yet could probably fill a few more days so off I go for a bit.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My fun machine (Miata) is in the shop. Getting prepared for the spring driving season. It will be 10 years old in another 40 days. I’ve left it stock this entire time. I hear change is good.
  • Can’t listen to the divider and chief. I’ll read the transcript.
  • I’m jealous of a good friend escaping to the warm weather of Florida this weekend.
  • I’ve let my multitasking skills lapse a bit but I’m getting my act together.

Who

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. I was in my workroom and a piece of wood with a knot had overlayed some templates I was using for a mug carving project for a friend who likes The Who. It caught my attention. I moved it just slightly and grabbed a shot.

I should have moved that drop light, but it did create a nice shadow around him and then the guitar in the darkness.

I love the texture of wood. Photo by Mike Hartley

Your guess is as good as mine

I was going through and editing/housecleaning/organizing some of my photo vault and came across this photo. I was going to trash it when I said to myself, what the hell, give it a shot. It was taken in Annapolis MD on a day with my daughter.

I was trying to come up with the best caption for whatever this is.

  • Is this a doorman saying – no man, you aren’t coming inside with those dogs.
  • Maybe an odor problem?
  • The act of washing Jesus’s feet.
  • Prep for foot modeling job.
  • Just cool your jets, the new sneakers will be here soon.

Visitor

Like the parking space says, visitor from another time period. Just like me. I’m a drop top man also but this ride is a little too heavy for me. It is a color my daughter would like though.

Good day all. That sun this morning is inspiring me to get moving. And then I opened the door and that cold 20 something degree temp hit me. I will still venture out but I don’t see much time in that cold.

Won’t be long till the car shows crank up again and I’ll be out early on Saturday or Sunday mornings with all the other motorheads appreciating the works of automotive art and performance.

Let me get moving here and go collect some fresh images.

Intense

I feel my intensity building. And no better time than now to funnel it into some action. My furnace is stoked and I’m ready to cook.

Music had slipped out of my daily routine for a while, but I’m made the proper course correction, and the dust is off the speakers and headphones. That always releases some good feelings and a smile. And when the weather changes and the car stereo is on with the top-down life will be great again.

I’ve got a few dozen new images to upload to the photo site and some blogs there to catch up on. As well as a lot of them here on WordPress I haven’t been keeping up with properly. Not out of obligation, I enjoy your work.

I’ve got a lot of alone time to fill today. I see some sunshine in the forecast, so I think I’ll head out with the camera and capture a fresh set of doors for this Thursday’s challenge. As well as filling some other holes in the portfolio.

Time to fire off this computer and accomplish something.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I enjoy political cartoons.
  • You can find great happiness in others. Just don’t make that the only reason you are happy.
  • What you choose to create and for who is unique to you.
  • Something about water draws me towards it.

Searching

I’m warm and toasty inside despite that nastiness outside. Just heard the plow come through.

Alone again in the office looking at some prints I made earlier and what wall they will go on. Thinking of venturing outside and taking some pictures. Then again after opening the door and catching some of that wind, I’m rethinking the expedition.

Thanks to OC Webcams

I was watching the webcams in Ocean City Maryland and many of them went offline last night with that blizzard. Any drink you order there will be a frozen one. Got this snapshot above from the 94th Street cam overlooking Coastal Highway just before daylight.

If I’m lucky, I can see myself wearing a path between my front door and the beach this year. And many points in between because I’d like to do a lot of Eastern Shore of Maryland photography. There are many great small towns and waterways to explore.

That will also serve the dual purpose of having the fun of getting to and from those destinations in my Miata. I can’t explain how much fun that has been to drive.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Yesterday was another day of missed opportunities. But feeling better about today. .
  • Sometimes being nocturnal feels more natural.
  • If I had the room, I was thinking of adding a heavy bag (boxing) to my office.
  • It’s lonely in here at times no matter how much I talk to myself.
  • The picture of the flower above is for balance. I might have some snow, fog and rain pictures soon.

Think Pink

Just doing my part to put a brighter face on a sloppy day. Old man winter is telling me I better get a snowblower and hang up the shovel or there will be hell to pay. I guess this last decade of just dustings gave me a false sense of security. I just looked outside and the snow is beginning in earnest.

Natures Fireworks. Photo by Mike Hartley

Just about time to head upstairs and prepare dinner. I’ve met my goal of cooking a few times this week and hope to build on that this coming week. I’ll have to get a few new ideas for our feast.

I see the Lakers and Celtics play tonight. The time when you would say that you would have a major viewing event is long past. While both teams are good and the Celtics could compete for a championship, the Lakers would need a miracle to make the Finals. I might catch a few minutes, but I’d rather work on my hobbies.

I’m on a roll building out my photo site more this past week and hope to continue that effort. Now if I could devote some time to the easel and woodwork, I’d be smiling ear to ear.

It doesn’t feel like a late Sunday afternoon. The kids are probably excited that the prospect of school tomorrow is fading away with every snowflake. And parents are wondering what we are going to do for childcare because work is still going to expect staff tomorrow morning.

My only responsibility is to check to make sure that the snow isn’t getting too deep tonight where I have to do it in two sessions. Other than that, I wake early to do my hobbies and that is so sweet not to have to think about fighting the elements if I don’t want to. I really should get out and take some snow pictures though. These bright flowers are a bit out of season here.

Recognized it

I was going through some of my parent’s old photos and found this one of an intersection. It was very familiar to me because I drove through it for almost 3 decades coming home from work in Washington DC. It’s the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road/Route 29 looking northbound in Silver Spring Maryland.

By the age of the cars, I’m guessing this was shot in the 1950s. Check the Silver theater on the top right of center.

Route 29 North. Photo by my parents.

Here is a shot I took one night on the way to work about a decade ago of that same theater.

Getting a grip

When I feel I’m losing my grip, I turn inward and try to recover. Such is today’s feeling. I’ve got to get back to creating some new work. I’ve started with some music and some visual inspiration from various artists this morning.

Jaws of life. Keeping things turning. Photo by Mike Hartley

I just put the camera on the tripod and have a few ideas to execute once I clear and make some studio space. Tonight, might be an opportunity to do some night snow shooting depending on the depth we are getting. Maybe some cooking shots while preparing dinner. I missed a good opportunity Friday night when I had all those red, orange and yellow peppers cut up and grilled.

When I get stuck, I stop seeing opportunities to create. I’m getting better at getting unstuck but I’m human and depression has always followed me. Waiting for the opportunity to block me at every turn. It prevents proper rest. It twists thoughts. I neglect my body maintenance. I feel guilty about what I haven’t accomplished instead of forging ahead.

Time to shake it off and get moving again. Some time on the treadmill, being I neglected that yesterday is a good way to start. Double up today’s walk to make up for the slackness.

Bored

The daily writing prompt asks – What bores you?

I guess a bad book, show or movie have bored me in the past. Some discussions about jobs. A lot of today’s music. Recent car designs. Trump and his circus clown show. Cutting grass, raking leaves, shoveling snow. Some traffic situations. Waiting for the first coat of paint to dry before putting second on.

Being on hold with Verizon support. Some technical classes I’ve taken. Watching people in stupid arguments. Watching golf. Shopping and power outages.

Waiting rooms because nobody talks anymore because everyone has their heads in the phone.

Undergoing radiation.

I hope I never have to go through those doors again. Photo by Mike Hartley

Waiting

Nothing like walking outside in the summer and smelling the flowers in bloom. I’m having trouble waiting for spring let alone summertime. I guess I’ll just have to dream for a few more weeks at least.

Music has had my mind racing all day. And it’s got as many ebbs and flows as the ridges in this flower. I can’t get at ease and that’s affecting production. I’ve got a few things done today but not much that I’m really excited about. Yeah, some essential chores, but nothing on the creative front I’m happy with so far.

I’m out of balance on several fronts. As I pulled the cover off my car today and started it to charge the battery that frustration of not being able to use it as I’d like due to the season and melting snow/salt covering the highways. I miss the enjoyment and freedom that toy gives me.

I blew off some of my exercise time today which wasn’t smart because that could be one reason the body feels tense. I haven’t picked up the camera all day Saturday and that is pretty much a failure.

The thought of having to shovel wet snow later today isn’t doing anything to improve my attitude. I will get through it and the winds on Monday and power through the week ahead with a renewed effort and mindset.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Maryland’s men’s basketball team got a nice win.
  • Some instrumental tunes can say a lot.
  • Don’t you just love people who can look you in the eye and lie.
  • I’m really going to be depressed when my grandchildren get old enough when they don’t run to my arms.

Paradise City

Not quite, but close. It would be nice to be back in Florida, instead of looking out on my yard of mud that was snow-covered till yesterday and about to be recovered with snow tomorrow. So, I’ll make the best of a cold situation. Why not start searching out what next year’s warm weather escape will be.

This year’s trip was kind of a spur of the moment one. My brother in-law and his wife had just taken a trip to Hawawi and that triggered the thought in both of us to say why not escape for a few days.

We looked at the southwest coast of Florida, but that area is still recovering so we went eastside to Fort Lauderdale. Specifically, the town of Lauderdale by The Sea.

And the beach was beautiful and open as can be on the first and second day there. By Friday people were elbow to elbow. The pool was far less crowded and warmer.

One of the nice things I remember about the trip was the complements we received on how nice we were compared to the locals. We were told they have some major attitude of entitlement. And I guess all that money there plays right into that hand.

I thought the cars were impressive. Watching these monsters of the sea go by like cabs was something else. Photo by Mike Hartley

One other thing that struck me in this area was the drivers. Holy crap, they are some aggressive sons of bitches. And that is saying something because I drive in the DC/Baltimore corridor. I didn’t see the signs, but I think there is an unwritten rule to test your horn at every intersection. And I guess NASCAR has moved the preliminary qualifying races to the streets. You didn’t see this action in the downtown area but a mile from the beach it was green flag racing.

It’s a town I’m glad I visited and would recommend to others. Great beaches and good restaurants all within walkable distance and there is a free shuttle around town. The open-air dining was perfect for the weather we had. The grandkids and kids liked their gifts and we were very relaxed. I do know Florida is a little to MAGA in my face and probably won’t be down for many more visits. The Caribbean has caught my interest and might be my next winter destination.

Branch Out

Got some Northern Cotton in bloom. And no, I’m not looking forward to more snow on Sunday. I had better make good use of today then and do a few things with the cars that need attention.

Music has been guiding me today. Very introspective afternoon and evening on Friday. Some of the lyrics have really hit home. Some of the hard driving cords have me kind of pumped up. Which is good because I’m hitting the treadmill in a few minutes. And then some light weights.

I’m on a daily routine with it now like I am blogging so it’s just adding to the frequency and intensity of my workout.

Pick One

You can Go, you can Stop, you can proceed with Caution. Personally, I’m on GO today and I see no reason to change that in the future. I had my grandson and son visit today. The young one is on GO+, with endless energy. He will be 4 years old this summer and I love this age.

They are so curious and fun and imaginative. We played, ate lunch and talked up a storm. Fixed dinner for my better half and now back to the computer. I think I’m going to try cooking all weekend.

Sounds like Caution may be the word of the weekend weather with either a blizzard or dusting on its way Sunday. That might Stop some plans but not mine. I’m going for it this weekend on several fronts. One is hoping to be more active here with some fresh images and thoughts.

So, caution to the wind. Full speed ahead.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The more you get inside yourself, the more you discover. Some of it gives me pause.
  • For those about to rock, we salute you.

Brighten

I’ve got to reach out to someone important tonight and try to brighten their day. Then again, I’m still working on myself this fine Tuesday afternoon. I’ve put a few miles on the treadmill and tried to get comfortable, but the spasms won’t let up for long.

Walking has really helped with my back pain. So, I’ll try some more this evening.

The slight warming today did nothing for me with all that snow still on the ground. Photo by Mike Hartley

A few chores and tasks have been completed today. Unfortunately, the list is as plentiful as the number of sunflower seeds in the above bloom.

Wishing I was as productive as yesterday. I must take advantage of this evening to feel like it’s been a good effort today.

All these responsibilities when we return home suddenly reappear. And it’s my better half who has by far been the busiest. Taking a week off from the normal routine has a way of paying itself back.

Let me set sail from this computer chair, surfing through some of my old photo galleries and instead sit with the paint brush for a few moments at the easel.

Rolling like waves

I try to be consistent. Like the waves hitting the shore. Some days smoothly, some days with thunder. But every day, every few seconds we break onshore. Blogging is one thing that keeps me consistent. Trying to get new images for it keeps me consistent.

I’m much more pleased with the images I share than the words. I wish I could express my thoughts more clearly at times and come up with interesting and witty topics/subjects.

I think it’s partially because I’m confused as to what I want to do and accomplish. In some ways the blog is a lot of fun and play. In other ways it’s kind of serious to me. I don’t mind doing it in obscurity for the most part. I do it for the few that might come across it and see or read something they like, a few family members and a very few friends who look at it and mainly for myself.

In some ways it’s like a daily challenge. I go through other blogs reading and gazing at wonderful words and images. And I think to myself I want to be part of that and see if something I create works. In other ways it’s practice for the book I hope to write for my kids someday.

Occasionally blogging is for my own therapy. Maybe expressing some things or thoughts that are part of me. It certainly helps me start the day right and in better spirits. Well, most days. Blogging inspires me to read more and open my mind. It allows me to see places and learn about them that I won’t get a chance to visit and see in my lifetime.

I do know one thing. I’ve been inside for far too long and I’m getting out this week and will have a ton of new shooting to share.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I see we tied the record low temp for this day at 3 degrees this morning. Not a record I like to see tied or broken.
  • It’s much easier to know people now by just listening to them.
  • A great opportunity is before all of us. We can fix things.
  • It’s surprising how few friendships last a lifetime.
  • Taking daily meds is how I keep track of the day of the week.

Choosing what to focus on today. I was thinking of doing some painting. Yesterday I downloaded and edited a ton of studio shots I did last week and uploaded some family images. Also, a few blog posts, some housekeeping and emails. Then I worked on a few illustrations.

Making choices each day is harder than I thought in retirement. I guess that is a biproduct of having a lot of interest. But am I losing focus on the one important thing? I never know really with the exception when I make the call to spend time with family and friends.

People and relationships are always the most important. If they are the right ones.

Even though I wonder recently, should I use a little of that family/friend time to work on a few of my projects more. It actually just worked out that way for a while when I was sick and some friends were out of town for a bit. It was an unusual gap in time which turned out to be productive in other ways.

Right now, it’s time for a little face maintenance or as some would say, trimming the beard. Which reminds me I like the few videos I’ve seen of young fathers shaving their beards and then surprising their young kids with the new face. It’s funny how strongly the young ones associate the facial hair with their father and when it’s gone how upset they get. I’m tempted to do it to one of my grandchildren, but I like my beard too much.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Monday was Groundhog Day. Sort of feels like it’s been that each day for the past year.
  • I’m not thrilled about having to go outside today.
  • Lies are always harder and harder to sustain.
  • I can’t imagine being in law enforcement now and being faced with the coming decisions. I think there is something in there about protect and serve.

Line up

Get your Ducks and Dragon in a row now. There are only 43 days left in the year and much to accomplish. There is so much I hope to get done this year. There is a lot of time to work with but it’s also a very busy social time of year.

A lot of people do end of year round ups, or best of. Some assess the yearly accomplishments or lay the foundation for next year.

I’m just going day by day. I’m not into judging what I think my best work is. I’d rather concentrate on trying to create it today because it’s a never-ending pursuit.

Assessing goals is a private matter. There are so many factors, ups and downs, changes, additions, deletions along the way not to mention all the personal stuff in between that has impacts. I already share enough imperfections here, I don’t want to list them all.

I’m not hung up on stats or subscribers. I do love the comments and likes from those who interact here and I thank you for taking the time. I do like to see how many posts I can make and how many words and new images I add.

So, here’s to another day of blogging, some painting and I’ve returned to doing some stone etching. I’ll have to put that one away when the better half goes to bed this evening.

Persistence

I’ve been persistent with this blogging for over a decade now. Still cranking out posts with some frequency with a vague purpose most days. Some chronicling events and plans of the day. Some thoughts of the day. Some pictures of the day.

Let’s go racing. Photo by Mike Hartley

Occasional commentary on life, politics, sports, kids, grandkids, education, cars, nature and whatever strikes me each day. A lot of feelings and observations from my perspective and experiences. Some of my career points, experiences with friends.

But for what purpose. Yes, I’m still true to my original thought of sharing my photography through my blog which I do by using all my own images. I do it because I thought it would help me grow in that area. And I need to make images more a focus.

The writing part is something that just came upon me as an interest. I know I still have work to do in this area but again the practice may lead to something good eventually. I think I’ll do less writing here and more on my book ideas though.

Automotive design used to be a stunning thing. Photo by Mike Hartley

Doing this blog sometimes while working was difficult. Free time and pressures of the job certainly impacted creativity and productivity.

Now it’s something I look forward to each morning to get me thinking and doing. And as time allows a few more posts here and there.

Okay, time to leave this chair and go out and catch some fall colors I’ll share tonight. I’m sure nature can give the paint shades of red above a go for the money.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I listened to Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon this morning. Money is a great track, but Time might be my favorite from that album.
  • Life would be difficult without glasses.
  • Not allowing military leaders to speak to Congress is dangerous. And the takeover continues.
  • Using my mind against pain.

Salute

My apologies to the bloggers I follow and to the ones I haven’t discovered. The last month or so I’ve been slack on interacting with the community and I’m going to resolve that starting now by carving out some time each day.

Yes, there might be a day here and there that I might be traveling or it’s a beautiful day outside and I only get to a few regulars, but I will be more active in consuming and responding to the wonderful work you all produce.

Not only does it enlighten me, but it also inspires me further in my own work. The wonderful words and images, the hobbies and knowledge, the perspectives and thoughts I’ve encountered here. Views of the world I probably won’t get to personally but appreciate but have through other eyes.

But I’m back to viewing the many wonders of fellow bloggers. My motor is running again.

I’ll be purring along like this monster. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Just once, I’d like to hear a doctor say, “see you next year.” Besides my optometrist.
  • I saw a dozen examples of colors I’d love to have my car painted this past weekend. That is going to be a project when the time comes.
  • Some knowledge I’d rather not have.
  • If someone hits me and says it wasn’t me, it was my hands-free driving vehicle. I might hit them and say it wasn’t me, it was my hands-free body.

Missed Her

Saturday my better half was out all day with family. I missed her and always have when she isn’t with me. But I have the pleasure again of her company all day today.

How much is Enough

I’ve always considered myself one not in need of a lot of material things. Especially expensive, status and luxury items. Oh, I like them, I ogle over them at car shows or a boat show, but I’m not a buyer.

Now would I be if I had more? Would I be drawn into the same trap that money can make me happier? I hope not, and not at this age I believe. Possibly when I was much younger and didn’t have some basic wisdom.

I’m out for less than 5 minutes on a Sunday morning and a BMW 840 passes a car on the exit lane on Rt 99 and the car he passed was going over the speed limit. All just a couple hundred feet before the elementary school. Luckily, he didn’t do that on a weekday when parents were out to witness it.

Some parents might have taken upon themselves to FUBAR the driver.

Everything has been more out of whack on the highways since Covid. The empty roads were speedways when nobody went out much. Now they are full again and we have people that can’t adjust. Or that they are so self-entitled that they will hurt someone without a second thought.

I was out for a total of about 20 minutes on the road and saw another driver run a red light and got cut off badly by another driver trying to get to HIS turn lane.

Here’s hoping for a smoother drive this afternoon.

Department of War

I see Trump has told military leaders to handle the enemy within. I guess that is me. He declared the company I worked for decades for “the enemy of the people” in his first term. I’m a registered democrat and he defines that blocks as radical left lunatics. I’ve always thought I was rather middle of the road.

I’ve never had any thought ever about raising arms against my own military but jeez, if you’re going to send them, I guess I have no choice. My father and two uncles are probably rolling over in their graves thinking they defeated the one and only Hitler.

A lot of military leaders, troops and even local police have some very important decisions to make soon it appears. I’m right here. Same address I’ve been in for decades. Thanks for the warning of war against your own citizens you took an oath to protect and serve. Much appreciated.

Sunday Choices

It felt good to get the Dremel tool out and do a little work with it. I was playing around with carving some seashells. A theme my granddaughter loves – the sea – and I do all I can to encourage her. Broke the first few, but I’m getting the knack of it.

Sort of wishing I was at the shore with this view. I could use a nice cold frozen drink. It’s still a beautiful day right here today.

The beer was my sons, and the wine is his better half’s. Photo by Mike Hartley

Football is a far thought from wasting time on. I’ll catch highlights later. It’s not that I don’t like the game, I do. It’s just to beautiful outside and there won’t be many more days like it.

I’ve put in a few hours work, now it’s time to play before I light the grill. And maybe a late night-ride later.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel out of place in most places.
  • I read a quote that said, “Happiness is only real when it’s shared.” I might be less happy than I thought.
  • Not knowing what I’m doing isn’t a problem. Lots of people tell me often.
  • Action is one of the keys to telling you about people. Inaction can tell you a lot also.

Get a handle

I keep trying to get a handle on life, but it keeps illuding me at times. Some doors are locked. Some are stuck. But I keep trying to find the handle each day that opens to something to make me smile.

Turn please. Photo by Mike Hartley

All kinds of concerns today. A grandchild under the weather. Many decisions and plans to be made. Not feeling my best this morning. Lots of chores facing me but haven’t had any seat time in the car the last few days.

We need to hit the store, but I hate shopping. I miss my kids, but they are busy. I’d love to spend the day photographing but I have week’s worth of landscaping ahead of me.

Life is about choices, and I’ve got a lot to make. But that is the norm in life, it just seems to get overwhelming at times.

I guess I’ll start today by getting that electrician list together and measuring the gravel area so I can add pavers. And clean the firepit and grill for later use today. Then move the woodworking tools outside. Sounds like a good start and fine choice.

Have a great morning all and try to make the best choices for yourself.

Reading Goals

I’m constantly falling behind on my reading goals. Just keeping up with blogs I like and discovering new ones seems to be a challenge. And finding time to write a few lines with a new image or two is tough some days with life getting in the way often.

Are you meeting your reading goals? Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m not what most would consider well read. I do keep up with current events and history. I read a good bit about my hobbies and sports as well as a few other topics. But I’ve discovered the more I read the more I enjoy it.

Unfortunately, I enjoy a lot of things, so it’s been tough to expand the time for more. My better half reads up a storm. She polishes off books like I polish my car, often and with veracity.

Well, it’s better to have too many goals than too few. So let me go read up on proper firepit use before I burn something down.

Get a grip

I hope to get a grip on my steering wheel and shifter today. And that be the guide for the day on getting a grip on enjoying life. I’ve been working too hard for the last few days. Time for some fun. And with a sunny day of 80 degrees what is not to like.

A shot from a recent car show. Photo by Mike Hartley

Some upgrades to the home this week, that are long overdue. New front doors and a new cover for the well head in the front yard. I’ll share some photos of before and after later when work is completed.

Being it’s a new month I thought I’d get back to walking on the treadmill instead of sitting in front of the TV. Welcome September.

No time to be sitting here any longer when it’s so nice outside. Time to put a few miles on some outside trails. Have a great holiday Monday.

Mirror

It’s good to look deep into the mirror once in a while. A good chance to be honest with yourself. A chance to see how many grey hairs are moving up from the beard to the scalp. A time to see the lines that life has left. Maybe catch the sight of a surgical scar. A time to evaluate how much life is left in those eyes.

Mirrored firewall, nice. Photo by Mike Hartley

A holiday weekend is upon us. Time for a cruise and maybe a stop at the town ice cream shop later. I hope to fire up the grill and cook some burgers and grill some scallops.

It’s funny how things changed so quickly. I remember being giddy with joy at having holidays. I worked a great number of them the decade before I retired and many before that. So having a holiday like most people was this strange thing for me.

Now in my second year, I’m taking that joy for granted already. Weekdays, weekends, holidays kind of blend together. Which is okay with me because every day is a holiday. Unless there’s a doctors appointment.

Time to step away from the computer and knock out a few chores before grilling and a spirited ride in the go-cart.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Music strikes many emotional chords in me.
  • I can’t believe it’s the traditional end of summer already. I’m disappointed in my beach attendance.
  • Would the world lose its mind if the internet went down?
  • If we ever sell this house, I’m going to have to cut out two bedroom doorframes that we have used to mark the grandchildren’s growth.

Why I blog

Why do you blog? – The daily writing prompt asks us this morning.

A very good question and one that I should examine again. Because a flood of thoughts just raced by.

I started blogging to share some of my photography an occasional thought, observation or opinion. As I first wrote on my About page “I hope you find or have found something here that moves you in some way or inspires thought or illicit emotion.”

I blog for myself because I want to be creative in this medium is one of the ways I can express myself and my outspoken opinion.

When starting it, I was thinking about a business off it but it’s really a hobby that I work hard at. Even though the content or quality doesn’t always hit the mark, I occasionally touch someone.

Having worked in the publishing business for almost 5 decades I’m getting to play on the side I supported for many years. I wasn’t a writer or photographer or artist. I worked on the technical and production sides for most all my career.

I admired the work of those writers and photographers for all those years. And now being retired I get to do my own daily publication.

Maybe someday my kids or grandkids or friends will look back at what I’ve shared in life and maybe a thought or image will stick with them and that will make me very happy.

I blog to increase my knowledge from reading other blogs and connecting with the many positive people who do blog.

I blog to examine my own thoughts. I photograph to capture moments in time in my eyes and share them if I like them.

I blog because it starts my day off actively and in a positive mindset most of the time. It gets my blood flowing.

I blog in hopes of occasionally making someone laugh.

I blog to help me become a better writer so one day when I get going on a few book ideas that are in various stages of development a real run at completing a work someday that would be worthwhile.

I blog to become a better photographer.

I think I’ll step outside again this morning to catch another sunrise. Photo by Mike Hartley

Nice

I noticed yesterday that I had a 365-day streak going on. A year. I went back last year and looked to see what broke my last streak. Ah, the good old 30-hour power outage took it away. I believe the streak at that time was 246 days.

Those are just numbers, but in some ways important. When I started blogging over a decade ago my goal was to post each day. I’m no more prepared now than I was last year to keep streaks alive. I don’t have posts scheduled in advance much. 99% of what I do is spur of the moment. I don’t have a backup power system besides a small generator.

I remember being bummed out about breaking a daily goal. But I’m more relaxed now and if it happens, it happens. It’s life. But I still have my personal goal.

Keeping a white car clean is a constant challenge. I had one once. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m feeling good from the yardwork exercise, and I’m headed back out for another hour or two in the sun. Then a shower and into the convertible to test the coordination between my left knee/foot and right arm/hand going through the gears. Respectfully of course.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I sense a wild week ahead. Then again, I could just be inspired.
  • Being retired doesn’t mean you don’t still have a ton of responsibilities.
  • Grandkids grow up too fast just like their parents did.
  • Sometimes the keyboard feels like a musical one. I wish my words had the feeling and beat of a good song.

Reflections of yesterday

My better half and daughter had a wonderful day together. I love seeing that. And I know her mother and mine would love to see that relationship.

What a beautiful day it was. Mostly sunny but a few clouds gave me a break from the sun every so often. Spent some of it mowing which is my meditation time. I’m trying to relax a bit more and let go of some things.

Wow, the Prince of Darkness John Michael (Ozzy) Osbourne has passed. Another soundtrack of my life silenced. A couple of my favorite Ozzy tunes – Changes – Mama, I’m Coming Home and of course Paranoid, Iron Man, I Don’t Know, Crazy Train, Close My Eyes Forever, No More Tears.

Doing this blog in relative obscurity isn’t a bad thing.

I think Stephen Colbert said it best to Trump – “Go F**k Yourself”

I love watching nature.

Just numbers

I don’t spend a lot of time looking at stats. And I rarely look at all time stats, but it caught my eye this morning that this will be my 4,000th post.

When I started blogging in 2014, I really didn’t have a great idea of where I was going with it and what I wanted in it. And over a decade later I still don’t fully know, apart from a few things.

I wanted to share my photography and a few thoughts. I haven’t done as much, as well or as often as I hoped, but I’m still here trying.

I’m sure I’ve used too many words, some incorrectly or with incorrect punctuation. And maybe at the end not a clear point. But I’m trying.

I know it’s an unorganized mess. I’ve got an old theme I need to get rid of and move on to something current. I don’t utilize the tools at my disposal. But I’m trying.

Sometimes I question whether I should be doing something different or focusing my energies elsewhere.

I hope it’s something that has touched a few people. I hope it’s something my family and friends might reflect on someday.

All I know is it needs a lot more work, and I hope to get the opportunity to do it and make it something that I’m proud of. Here’s to the next 4K.

Monday musings

Just looked at the list and it’s a very packed week. So much for the schedule I was thinking about. I’ll adjust because that is what life is about. A never-ending series of adjustments and modifications. And being a senior, it’s going to be one after another.

But the few free minutes I will have I’ll make very good use of it. I’m going to work my behind off this evening. Oh yeah, catch a few minutes of the Home Run Derby.

I was thinking back when I started blogging and I would use photos I had taken to kind of inspire the days thoughts or topics. I’ve gotten away from that, and I feel the need to return to that formula.

Color me. Photo by Mike Hartley

This flower made me think about all the beauty possible but the UGLYNESS killing it on so many levels is making me sick and it’s time to rock and roll against it. This greed and lack of compassion is out of control, and it only keeps being reinforced by those in power.

I’m going to have to work harder for a change. Not for me, but for my children and grandchildren.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s good to be feeling better today. Whatever attacked my sinuses this weekend has abated.
  • There are Monday’s and then there are MONDAY’S.
  • I feel like I’m in a washing machine that has lost its spin cycle. You feel wet if it’s raining or not when stepping outside.
  • As one of my best friends is commonly heard saying, “it’s time to turn it up.” And he isn’t talking about just the music.

Untapped Energy

I’m found an untapped source of energy this evening. Maybe it’s the hard driving Rock and Roll I’ve been listening to. That has always been one part of my inspiration in life among many things.

Sometimes it’s certain lyrics, or an amazing guitar riff, or the rolling bass or thundering drums. Maybe a horn section or a wizard on the keyboards. Every vocal instrument from Steven Tyler’s screams and harmonica to the operatic Freddie Mercury and piano.

This world needs more music. I know I need more music. It makes me feel good. It makes me think. It makes me move. It’s a great exercise companion. It helps me know I can. It aids me in imagining something special. It takes me to a place of tranquility. It can inspire me with untapped courage. It makes me feel passion. And oh, my can it fly through the gears on a stick shift like nobody’s business.

I love music and now that I have time to really enjoy lots of it instead of snippets here and there. You know having to turn it down or off to concentrate on life’s questions or tasks. I got far less of those so if I want to duck walk around the house like Chuck Berry or Angus Young I certainly can. I’m far less stressed so if I want to play drums like Neil Peart while sitting on the tractor cutting the yard, so be it.

Or maybe just sit back and tap my foot to some groups doing unplugged versions of hits that are rhythmic masterpieces. Or maybe sit and listen to “Wish you were Here” by Pink Floyd and maybe shed a tear for those I miss dearly.

I’ve been to a good number of concerts over the years. Most of them are in my younger years but I think I’ll check out a few more this summer. But tonight, it’s been a concert in Woodstock.

The books are under way. Daily writing on these projects is now part of the day. I’m working on 3 separate efforts and progress is good. I wrote a lot this evening.

I shot a bucket list item tonight. I’ll post those photos later in the morning.

I’m not detecting the first light of day yet, so sunrise is a bit off. Let me switch from my nocturnal self and morph into the day walker environment.

And on a bah humbug note. I’m not thrilled about the very cold temps and forecasted snow.

Shake that tree

Good morning fellow frozen ice cubes. A balmy 18 degrees with a feels like temp of -8. when I started writing this in central Maryland. I’m going to create some warmth with the morning workout and then I’m going to shake the creative tree today and see what falls out.

And low and behold, the song Low Rider by the group War came on as I was editing a few Miata club meeting photos. A nice combination to thaw out the chill in the air in my office. My baby is under the cover and freezing outside. I wish I had a garage. Even more I wish it was warm and I was pointing it EAST with the top down and not stopping till I hit the Atlantic Ocean.

Maryland Miata Club meet. Photo by Mike Hartley

The first warm day we get this year that is what is going to happen. It will be a spur of the moment call one morning. And I’ll be gone, like we would do in our youth with the infamous “ROAD TRIP”. We used the phrase a few years before Animal House made it famous as I’m sure other before us had.

Sorry about getting sidetracked, back to the creative endeavors. Today is a great opportunity for progress, and maybe completing the beach project. The goal this year is to be a better finisher. Having a lot of things competing for my interest is sometimes a distraction, and also a help if I run into a block in one area.

Interesting life observation. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I’ll go add a few things to that pastel drawing I’m working on before hitting the treadmill. I’ve got some shots from last night to download and process. After a few miles and some weights I’m going to crank up the color printer and exhaust my paper supply.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Taking that next shot is better than thinking about that next shot.
  • Made a great fettuccini dish with red pepper, mushrooms and bacon last night. The point now is I’m trying to avoid having the leftovers for breakfast it was so good.
  • There is a time and a place and that time is now and that place is here. At least for me.
  • Almost time for another beautiful sunrise over the ocean.

Keys

Yeah, that’s right, the magic keyboard. The slayer of sentences. The pounder of the paragraph. The crusher of chapters. The builder of books. And then I thought what if I couldn’t use that tool? That gave me a pause.

What triggered this thought was when I sat down a few weeks back, my nerve pain overwhelmed my arms and hands, and I couldn’t work for a few minutes and was slowed for hours. What an unsettling feeling.

I’ve got to adapt my photography by using a tripod more. Weight was certainly a big factor in my last purchase. I won’t be leaving home without the monopod and tripods if I’m using the Nikons for any duration of time. Old man, slow lens = tripod if I want sharp shots.

And then I thought as I always do, how do I adapt if needed? Getting older is a lot of adapting. Things you took for granted for decades are suddenly an issue. Pain and eyesight are a few I fight.

The eye doctor’s appointment at the end of the month should help with the latter. And I’ll power through the rest and adapt.

Today we are battling the cold. I’m headed out this afternoon for a few minutes of photography combined with exercise because I’d love to find a spot to hike down and get some partially frozen streams.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Something that can make you feel old. The invitation to your 50th high school reunion.
  • I love that deer use my lower back yard as their beds in the winter. Looking out and seeing 2-8 sleeping is nice.
  • Sometimes I’m thinking about tomorrow, but today I’m thinking about today. But in a few minutes, I could be thinking about yesterday. But then there is next week.
  • I’ve got to get back to work on 2 carvings and finish them this week. So off I go.

Appointment

Do you ever have an appointment you wish you didn’t have to keep. I get a few of those a year for medical checkups that I don’t care about. It’s not so much the appointment itself it’s the possible ramifications.

It’s like going to a casino in some ways, give some blood or take another test and spin the wheel of results. I got one of these coming up. I’ve got a busy schedule between now and then, so I won’t dwell on it all the time but it’s in the back of my head.

Many are wandering around thinking about that next appointment. Many have so many appointments they blur together.

At the hospitals waiting rooms I always try to be very positive and smile. I see a few others doing the same, but I see more that are having trouble smiling. Either due to concern or knowing results and there for treatments.

So how do I react to this? Getting to work is usually a good one and employed often. Adding some music to the mix is also helpful. Focusing on another aspect of life for enjoyment. And I’ve got some of that planned with friends and family.

It’s a waste of time thinking and writing about it. I should get busy and put the morning to good use.

I need to make each days outlook this bright. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling good about the exercise start to the day.
  • Doesn’t it make you wonder how much money gambling is raking in if they can afford to advertise more than pharmaceuticals, insurance and energy. I don’t know that for a fact but it certainly feels like it some days.
  • An old friendship was on the mend. And then came politics again.
  • I wanted to make a snowman but these past snows weren’t good snowman material.
  • I wonder how much further the rule of law can bend. We might be on our way of finding out.

Recharge

I was losing momentum and getting down. Life will do that to you every so often, but I’m on the right track again. As a friend tells me “it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you react that matters” and as usual he is right. So, I’m going to stay positive this weekend.

One thing I feel really good about is my goal of walking a few miles on the treadmill each day besides the other regular walking in life and photography hikes I take. I see the Red Cross has a 100-mile challenge/fundraiser for the month of February.

Take that walk, pause and reflect. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m tempted to try it but I’m only averaging 2 miles on the treadmill each day and that will require 4 miles a day. I do a fair amount of other walks throughout the day most of the week, but my right knee has been an issue with pain for a couple of months now.

The short-term goal is to sprinkle in some 3 mile days and then make that the norm for maybe another month and then evaluate. The thing I like about it is that even if I have a lazy and catch some sports and just tinker around the house, I’m still getting a few miles walk in and some light weights.

I like the treadmill because it’s an even surface. Yes, I love getting out also but I step much differently outside. I’ve torn my ankles up enough for several people over the years.

It feels like it helps my balance which was getting suspect for a bit. It helped me relax and unwind. Also using it to multitask. If I’m going to watch a game, why not walk and watch. I’m also thinking of things to write about as my mind wanders during commercials.

I see yesterday January 10th was quitters day. I believe I read somewhere, a study said 80% of New Years goals will be given up on by the second Friday in the month. Luckily for me its full speed ahead on exercise as well as a few others.

Cool Friday Start

I watched a beautiful sunrise on the Atlantic Ocean this morning from one of the webcams in Ocean City MD. There is still snow on the beach and boardwalk there. And some more on the way later today.

It’s time to trim the beard before I start looking like Grizzly Adams. Even though it does provide a little extra warmth at this time of year.

In looking at the images of the devastation in California, it has moved me to make a donation to the Red Cross this morning. Someone has to start asking the question, “should we build here” when these events happen. They asked those questions after other disasters like Katrina. I hear insurance was difficult to get even before the fires. It’s going to be impossible for anyone to get it in the future.

Other parts of the country could be in store for more events like this. The population of many coastlines are in jeopardy. And its far from the only area of the country that experienced drought.

Had a few friends visit outside my back slider door this morning. This guy had me in his sights. It’s so friggin cold out today they would sit, duck and close their eyes at times when the wind would gust. Then just as fast hop up and fly away.

If my mom were alive I could call her and ask what they were, and she would know. I did keep a few books of hers, and I think one was a guide to birds. I might have to go rummage around for that if I intend to keep posting wildlife.

Photos by Mike Hartley

I love to blog but I need to improve my content. I started off this year trying to increase the number of posts I do each day. My goal was 4 a day. I’m averaging 2.6 so far. Good thing I caught myself slacking already 10 days into the year.

The thought was the more post would inspire me to do more photography. It does but that is an additional production to fit into the day.

Time is mostly the limitation, but not utilizing my time correctly is another. I’m good at starting early and getting the first post out most days. And sometimes a follow-up one before noon. But the second half of the day, I’ve been allowing too many distractions.

I have increased communications with some people which is a good thing but it takes time. I’m also trying to read and learn more which is great, but producing at the same time is difficult.

Of course there is life which gets in the way. Doctors appointments, social visits, babysitting, appealing my property tax, insurance comparisons, to mention just a few this week.

But I will get back to my goal and at the same time try to get some better content.

Cruise Control

I woke this morning not feeling 100% so I’m going to take it easy today. No morning walk outside being it’s 17 degrees with a stiff wind making it feel below 0. So I watched the sunrise cam in Ocean City this morning while tending to some office cleanup.

That snow is blowing off the roofs today with those winds. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m waiting for the Tylenol to quell the pounding headache. Once that happens I can get back to some hobby fun. I had grand plans for last night but they fell by the wayside. I couldn’t get warm and huddled under a few blankets and being I was in the recliner that didn’t last long before I got up and went to bed.

I can’t get over the devastation and pain so many are suffering in California from those fires.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Snow will tell you how much wildlife you have around your home. It looks like a small army has marched through my back yard.
  • I always had this feeling my children were growing up too fast. I’m getting that same feeling now with my grandchildren.
  • I wonder when peoples breaking point will come with so many stupid things going on the highways.
  • It’s depressing not seeing a day in the long term forecast that will allow this snow to melt.

Chop Chop

I need to get back in gear. A great start to the day, but I faded fast. Working out in the cold can take it out of me. I can work all day out in the heat. Not the cold though. That first 3 hours of the day outside was like 8.

Then off to an important meeting and I had to engage the brain after that physical work this morning. By this afternoon I was toast and took some comfort in the recliner. Been fighting a headache the last few days.

So tonight I get back in the swing. Some treadmill time to get the blood moving. Some music to get me inspired and a relaxed mind to create.

I hope to do a few more posts tonight. Maybe on some medical thoughts, maybe just a few more images I run across editing some previous work. It could be a rant on drivers passing on blind spots on our single lane road and what I’ll do to them if we meet. Or maybe thoughts on the conversation I’m going to have with a neighbor who likes to speed through the neighborhood. I wonder how much a set of spike strips cost? Just kidding, I’ll have a rational conversation with them first.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hate missing calls from friends.
  • Beef Stew is a hearty cold weather dinner.
  • I made a lunch date with my daughter which gave me a smile for a long while today.
  • I love the way sun makes snow sparkle.
  • Each time I think my knee is improving, I tweak it and we begin again.
  • I saw a video of my granddaughter sledding and giggling on the way down. That was the sweetest sounds I heard all day.
  • Again my hearty thanks to people keeping the roads clear and all those struggling in less than good conditions to goods to market.

Timing

Finding my creative cycle is a rather elusive thing at times. I feel like a cat chasing its tail. I catch it and it’s loose again. Like cats it’s sometimes active at nights. Sometimes wildly so. Maybe I’ll be that cat roaming late tonight.

Too many things stopped my creativity over the last year. The supply of excuses and things that could stop me in my tracks are too endless to list. This year I’m trying to retrain myself. To let loose, to not let things stop me, to not get distracted, to not get frustrated, to not worry, to not let no or less flattering comments slow me.

Now I’m learning each day, and working longer, harder and more effectively. I’m seeing opportunities and it’s amazing and the more I see and get to work on the more that seem to open up.

The biggest thing is to just keep working even in the most difficult times I’ve learned. The holidays are always tough for me. Apprehension about medical appointments. Maybe an argument with my better half or a family member being distant get me out of sorts and I slow or almost stop.

Yes things will give me pause. Like learning about the loss of an old work friend the other day and the issues mentioned above and others, but my focus is on creating and if I’m working, I’m able to recover and regain my footing and energy.

Tonight I’m staying very busy to keep my mind from wandering down other paths of concern.

After the meet

This Sunday is the Maryland Miata Club meeting. I’m going to go and join in for an hour before returning home and covering the car for the upcoming snow on Monday. I just threw the cover back on the car this afternoon for the dusting that’s on its way today.

The meets usually last 2-3 hours easily but when it’s 30 degrees, even the strong will move inside or head home after an hour. One thing I’m looking forward to is a slice of Three Brothers Pizza. They took over the old Neo Pizza spot. And that’s the lot we meet at.

I’m a ragtop man. So begins a year of travel, but first the long season of cover on, or top up. Hence the name on the logo below – Full Circle Road Trips. Those sunny days and warm summer nights are balanced out with the cool temps and snow.

This year is the year of the destination. I hope to make my travels, a little more part of this blog this year.

I tinkered with the logo below that I’ll use to detail my road trips this year.

There won’t be too many this month in the Miata but that won’t stop the other vehicles. Between the weather and appointments this January is busy. I did take the fun machine out Thursday night because I hadn’t started it in a week, so I thought I’d exercise it a bit with a trip to my friends home.

May you enjoy the drive and the bad drivers be on another road than yours.

Here’s to safe travels and exciting miles ahead in 2025.

Kickoff

After the 2024 year with the WordPress Daily Writing Prompt I’ve decided to move onto my own mind and not rely on something like that. Or at least that is my hope. Finding things to explore in a variety of topics or observations or trains of thought.

Despite the title it doesn’t have anything to do with football, even though that topic will be broached in the future. It’s the kickoff of a new year and new possibilities.

So, I’ll start with a simple one. In November and December, I was doing some photography along the Patapsco River along Howard and Baltimore counties. The scenic photos got good notice but what really got people’s attention, was an area people were using as a dump.

It got me thinking about my photography and how I might use that in the future to help change things. If nothing else, it sheds a light on what could improve or use help. And I’m putting a trash bag in my car so when I’m out in nature I can pick up a bit from those less considerate of the world we live in.

I was also looking at the train bridge that crosses River and Ilchester Roads. From an inexperienced structural engineer, that one looks suspect. So maybe while I’m doing structural photography, I could help our infrastructure engineers maybe catch a weak spot before something happens.

I’ll capture the homeless if out and about. Another problem so few seem concerned with.

Homeless but not helpless.

I am out of balance with my complaining and actions. If I spend more time trying to correct things, then I have no problem shedding my light and opinion on things. But if I’m not lifting my own weight, it’s a bit hypocritical.

So here’s to capturing some more images that focus not just on problems but some solutions and actions along the way. Anything I can start doing to make a positive difference.

You ask me why

Why do you blog? – So ask the Daily Writing prompt on this fine Thursday.

I blog because I love writing and sharing my photographs and thoughts. Doing it daily and hopefully well has been and is still my goal. It’s been a lot of fun over this first decade of blogging, but I hope I’ve just scratched the surface of things I’d like to do.

I’ve been in a daily publishing routine and business for so long that even when I retired I thought keeping this going daily was a good idea. I hope to become a better writer so my work on books is more effective. It’s a good way to start the day. A little music, sharing some thoughts and images I’ve shot.

That is why I do it now.

When I started blogging life was in turmoil. I had been a few years recovering from my first cancer and a second one had started so the feeling of life being finite entered my mind. I was pissed at myself for not acting after the first health scare and got my ass in gear finally. I felt like I had this creative side and desire from a youth, I didn’t pursue as I hoped.

So many changes at the job had taken place, many were quite disruptive. Little did I know what was to come for the last decade. It was a great escape and one of the positive things to focus on for my future.

Here we are in retirement and I’ve got a good head start and ready to spread my wings more.

Writing enjoyment

What do you enjoy most about writing? – The Daily Writing prompt inquires.

I love that it gives me something to look forward to each day. I like the opportunity to possibly write something meaningful to someone.

My writing would surprise my mother and my high school English teachers but make them both proud I believe. I happened to have failed 9th grade English and had to take summer school to make it up. One of my mother’s many skills and jobs was a proofreader and a damn fine one who I’ll never measure up to without the help of technology.

The challenge of writing a book or books is in front of me. I’ve been blogging for a decade now and have written over a million words here. I will most likely continue it for the rest of my days because it allows me to express myself.

I don’t know if you have heard the adage “think before you talk” or “engage brain before mouth” or the variations of that thought. Sometimes I’m good at expressing myself verbally, sometimes not. My emotions can override my brain.

Writing allows me time to think and hopefully express my real thoughts in a well-communicated manner. While at the same time writing with feeling and emotion. I like the opportunity to pair the right photo I’ve taken with the right words or thoughts.

Writing has moved me to read more and that is also enlightening.

Ops, I might have rambled on too long answering a simple question. Onto the next post or chapter. Enjoy the day.

If you’re lucky, you get to write about life or anything you want. Photo by Mike Hartley

Better Questions

I’ve been tinkering with the Daily Writing prompt questions for a while now and I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the type of questions. Most are related to the personal type of information being asked and how that might be used.

Occasionally the consensus is the question has been asked before in several different ways. I haven’t made a complaint yet about a question but today’s “If you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?” is so off the charts it is going to inspire me to create a list of questions better than this to send to WordPress because this one is for a 5-year-old and I don’t know too many people that age blogging yet.

Just a few off the top of my head that I might write about in the future when I run across a lame one from WP. Who knows, maybe I’ll start adding a top 10 list of possible questions on each of my replies so people have a choice if they don’t like the WP Daily Writing prompt.

My apologies to the WP person who created this. Momma taught me if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all. But mom passed a while back and I forget this once in a while.

  1. Soft Serve or Regular Ice Cream?
  2. What is the best view you have ever had?
  3. Do you believe EV’s are the future?
  4. King Crab or Blue Crabs, which are your favorite?
  5. What cut of steak is your favorite?
  6. Do you like swimming in a pool, ocean, or lake? Or simply can you swim?
  7. If you could change the look of your home, what would it be?
  8. What is the longest you ever let your hair grow? Post a picture.
  9. Do you think drivers can get worse than they are today?
  10. Do you fear heights? At what level do you start to get uncomfortable?
What kind of question was that? Photo by Mike Hartley

Listen

What do you listen to while you work? – Another very vague question from the daily writing prompt.

Being recently retired I don’t listen to anything while I don’t work anymore.

This morning while blogging and editing photos I’m listening to the birds sing as the sun started to approach the horizon. Most mornings I’ll listen to some music, something inspirational to get the juices flowing.

When doing other “work” like mowing the yard or washing the car I like to have some light classic rock on because those are mellow activities.

Other times I just like silence when I’m working.

When I worked at the College Park printing plant I would listen to the presses running in the background.

Do I hear 100

Good day Howard County and beyond. I’ve been out a bit already and that heat was beating down strong early this morning. So be it, I’ve still got chores to do and an early start was essential. I hope to be done before it gets to the max temps.

OK, 2/3 of the mowing is complete. I’ll do the rest on Wednesday or Thursday. With this heat and drought, I haven’t cut in 2 1/2 weeks. Was long in spots and dormant in others.

I saw 99 degrees on the computer, I strolled past the Weather Channel and Baltimore was 104. I was downtown yesterday and it cooks on those city streets.

I hope to pack in a ton of activities in the next 2-3 months. Some of them are local like the Howard County Fair which takes place August 3-10. I hope to spend a few days there shooting that event.

The Ellicott City project I’ve been working on has some holes in it that I will be filling with some shots this week.

Well, time for an early dinner at Oscar’s Alehouse in Woodstock. If the rain holds off I’m going out shooting after the All-Star Game.

Have a great afternoon all.

Bothersome

What bothers you and why? – Here I am trying to start the week out on a positive note and this Daily writing prompt question is leading me the other way.

Holy crap, asking this on a Monday morning? My replies are sometimes too long-winded and I could go on about this one but I’m trying to take a better direction and not live in the world of bother, but fun.

So here are the Top 10 serious ones with short justifications.

  1. Dangerous drivers – They are arrogant and don’t respect human life.
  2. Selfishness and greed – It causes lots of pain.
  3. Predidjous – We are all human beings and all flawed in some ways but all deserve to be treated with respect.
  4. Senseless violence – Need I say more?
  5. Arrogance – It’s just so unbecoming of people.
  6. Dishonesty – Lose trust, lose respect.
  7. Lack of respect for your environment – I guess this could fall under the category of selfishness but it’s another level.
  8. Winter – I don’t like being cold.
  9. Making mistakes – I just don’t like screwing up at anything.
  10. When I don’t finish what I started. – Because when I finish, I feel much better.

Certain about

List 10 things you know to be absolutely certain. – So asks’ the Daily Writing prompt.

10 things I’m certain about on a Sunday morning before the sun comes up. That’s asking a lot.

  1. I try to do better each day.
  2. Maryland has the best crabs and makes the best crabcakes.
  3. I see the sun trying to rise.
  4. My body isn’t as young as it used to be. The brain though has the luxury of ignoring this.
  5. I’m in love with a lot of people.
  6. Creating makes me happy.
  7. The feeling of beach sand between my toes feels great.
  8. We need to do a better job taking care of each other and this planet.
  9. I miss my parents.
  10. I’m thankful for today.

Seeking fun

Are you seeking security or adventure? – Interesting question from the Daily writing prompt.

I don’t seek either of these as I interpret the question.

I feel secure and don’t live in fear. Otherwise, I’d never get in a car, or go online. I don’t sit at the front door with my shotgun. I’m not careless and I’m aware of my surroundings. A matter of balancing life and all its dangers.

My adventure days are behind me in some ways. Not that every day isn’t an adventure. There is a lot of fun and travel in my life. Every day watching a grandchild is an adventure. I’ve been married over 4 decades so that is always an adventure. I have adventurous friends and sometimes go along. So adventure finds me, I don’t have to seek it.

I seek FUN. Photo by Mike Hartley

Admiration and Advice

List the people you admire and look to for advice…. – A serious question from the Daily Writing prompt for a Saturday morning. Not sure I’m up to it with my eyes half open.

Admiration is a funny thing. Most of us admire the traits or actions of an individual, not always the whole person. All of us have flaws. So if you’re looking for that perfect package you might be disappointed in your search.

I also realize the people you admire and look to for advice could be two different people.

I’ll start with an easy one of a sports star I admired. The first would be Derek Jeter. A class act, kept a close group of core people around him, focused on his craft and family, played his best every day, showed up every day, and respected the game and opponents. Showed gratitude for the appreciation. Showed character in difficult years. Showed greatness at key moments.

I admire my parents, and always will. They grew up in the Depression era, fought wars, knew hard work, and sacrifice, and passed on some wonderful values.

I admire my better half. Such a strong person in such a small package.

I’ve admired some of my bosses and coworkers over time. I admire our public servants like Fire and Police and those who serve in our military. I admire healthcare workers. And many who do thankless jobs that keep our world running smoothly.

I admire artists of many types. I admire children for their honesty.

I admire volunteers. I admire the happiness of the little girl I used to sit across waiting for radiation treatments. I admire the common man who steps up in emergencies without hesitation.

I admire the friendships I have and have had.

Advice, like opinions, everyone has some for you. I take advice from those very close to me and total strangers. If a professional photographer, I’ve never met offers advice it’s probably wise of me to listen and absorb it.

Sorting out the advice you take is key in life. Letting others make decisions for you may not suit your desires in the long run. So I go with my gut, listen to that voice in your head for advice. Enjoy life. As far as any of us know it only comes around once.

Flow

I’ve got a much better flow going this month. Each day I’m more excited to see what I can accomplish. And each day I feel I do better and better. At the same time, I’m able to relax, rest, and regroup after years of hard work.

Inner Harbor Baltimore. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m cranking out prints, editing, and taking more photos daily. Tonight I’m going to catch up on reading some blogs I follow. I’ve been neglecting that in the last few days, and that isn’t right.

I should spend some time on the treadmill also. As I look to the right I see a couple of photos that need frames and hanging. Retirement is being excited about all the stuff to do.

The week ahead is booked tightly. Some responsibilities but time for some fun also. I think I’ll try to do 3 posts a day starting this week and try some organization at the same time.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Hugs from a toddler are so genuine and special.
  • The upper 70-degree temps agree with me. But I sense sneezing ahead.
  • Nice start to the season by the NY Yankees. The Evil Empire Returns.
  • I love listening to the song Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd early in the morning.
  • Someone took my breath away today.

Blogging

I just realized I passed the 3000 posts mark a few posts back. I saw the 5400 image mark passed a while back. Not bad over the 10 years but a drop in the bucket I hope to do over the next 10. I’ve only been retired for 3 months now.

I also found a list of goals from January and February of 2014. I thought about starting a business in Photography, Blogging, Book writing, and other arts. 10 years later I want nothing to do with business, but everything to do with pursuing those roles. If a business comes from it later on, so be it.

All I want to do is create. And several of the ideas on this 10-year-old list need to be fulfilled. Sometimes I’m glad I’m a packrat. Hidden gems appear now and then.

I feel like I’m on this unfinished journey to realize something I feel the need to communicate and create.

When I started, I thought it was just for my photography. I discovered I enjoyed writing (running on at the mouth without talking). It’s the practice to learn and develop so I can get a book or two completed.

But I use blogging for a lot of things. Simple ones like just getting moving and motivated every day. It makes me think, reflect, and sometimes share what I’m feeling about what I’m hearing or seeing. It’s something that family and a few friends occasionally look at.

It reminds me to pick up the cameras, turn on the music, get into a positive mindset, and begin the passion I feel each day.

I get to share the random crap that crosses my mind, and my photos and hopefully make someone else feel better and myself at the same time.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The sounds of pickups and trailers unloading huge mowers have started again. Maybe someday they will be pulling up in front of my house. Of course that comes with a COST.
  • Good friends, good food, March Madness. Blissful Sunday morning.
  • The news is the news, it’s there every day. I’m more of a history buff now being retired from news organizations. I catch it when it’s convenient with me.
  • I fall a little short of writing my children every day but at least that reminder is there and I have a fairly good batting average.
  • I have two dead batteries this morning and only one charger.

Get moving

I’ve got to get on a schedule, like the trains. Predictability is good. I never had the time to make that a part of my blogging. Just time to pull together an image and a few words while working and living was a goal I had trouble doing daily.

Now, without a full-time job, I can crank out a few posts a day without much issue. So why not try to start a routine for this mess of a blog?

Trains are rolling art displays. Photo by Mike Hartley

This train will run 7 days a week. Track maintenance (doctor visits) might affect the schedule. There will be multiple trains each day that may run anytime day or night. The engineer has a weird lifestyle and many other loves, passions, chores, and obligations.

This train might go off the rails at times. It might seem to be more off-track than on.

This train has many different speeds and will go at whatever is inspiring it, or slowing it down with negative vibes.

Train getting ready to cross Woodstock Road Photo by Mike Hartley

This train has many unscheduled stops along the way. If the conductor or engineer feels the need to stop and look at something beautiful, then enjoy it.

This train may be an express at times and only a start and reach its endpoint.

This train has a dining car. For Food Reviews of course.

This is also an auto-train. Yep, it stops and we get off for some 4-wheel adventures.

This train hauls freight so some baggage might be unloaded from time to time. But also some important presents here and there.

I worked for a short time, in a building just to the right of this bridge. Photo by Mike Hartley

This train may go through tunnels of darkness but don’t worry, we always emerge out the other side.

This train has many stations and new ones, constructed all the time.

I read that trains are symbolic of progress, destiny, change, and transitions. Maybe some of that will rub off here.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling the need to listen to music today. And we know that inspires the feet to move.
  • Way too cold for the first day of Spring. I’m staying inside as a protest.
  • It’s bracket-picking time. I’ve talked my better half into doing one. I’m going to do it like one of those ab lib games. I’m just going to give her the names of both teams and fill out the brackets. The odds are she wins it all.
  • Never write off any day.

Why

Why? Because everything has its timeline and we get frustrated when it surprises us. Why? Because we have the illusion of control when we don’t. Why? Because hope seems futile till it gets you through some things. Why? Because some people are born bad. Why? Because some people are born unlucky. Why? Because some people make bad choices.

Why Not? Place a bet, everything is a gamble. Why not? Order that steak, you know you want it. Why not? Sleep an extra hour to feel rested. Why not? Live today like it could be your last day. Why not? Share something special. Why not? Do your own thing. Why not? Rise above the rest.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Old is when you saw the NBA Logo play a game.
  • All the things I don’t know overwhelm the feeling that I know a lot of things. And that is a good thing. It keeps that learning things gear engaged.
  • My first red car I got a lot of speeding tickets. My current red car has no tickets. But my current red car is faster than my first red car.
  • I wonder if my kids will laugh at some of the things I collect.

Ambition-Reality

I was thinking back because the daily writing prompt asked me to “Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.”

Let’s see, I’ve done the typical home projects like a deck, landscaping, and basement but I did have help from friends with those so I guess that’s not a true DIY.

And then it popped into my head, what I’m doing now is the most ambitious project in my life. I’m starting a new career as a photographer, writer, and artist and I hope to become a professional in each. Yes, a lofty goal, one that will take a ton of work. The time in this career won’t equal the 48 years in Newspapers so I’m under the gun to make my mark quickly.

So I work at them every day. It’s kind of easy in one respect because it’s a passion. In reality, it’s tough as hell because it’s real work. And it’s all me doing each piece. Each day I realize I didn’t start that sketch I thought of, work on that photo project, or complete that chapter in the story I’m writing. So each day I fall a little short of my goals and it’s a little frustrating. But that fades with sleep and the next morning I’m excited again.

And then there are the mornings I’m kind of riding high because of the previous day’s accomplishment when I realize that I forgot to charge the camera batteries as I’m going out the door. A good reminder that it’s a lot of little things that make you good. And also that I’m finite, which is a limitation.

Today is another day to build on the most ambitious project of my life. What more could one ask for? The opportunity to build an original.

Weeding

I was looking at my blogging drafts folder and what a mess. Hundreds of ideas started. Time to weed out that mess and trash, or finish and publish. I guess I got spurred along to do this because I finally cleaned out and organized one of my email accounts and that felt great.

Weeding for effect. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve started to look at things and was reminded I’m a bit of a pack rat. So here is to a fresh start of getting things back to a manageable level in a few areas. Cleaning up the photo library, the office, the workroom, and the filing system to start with.

Doing this to kind of restart my start. I got busy and made a ton of progress immediately upon retirement last month. But all kinds of logistics, commitments, appointments, changes, and as always unexpected emergencies left me with unfinished business.

So I’m going to use the few remaining days in February to get my act together.

A few verses I like from a song called Something for Nothing by Rush

No, you don’t get something for nothing
You can’t have freedom for free
You won’t get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dream might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story

In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your song

Oh you don’t get something for nothing
You can’t have freedom for free, no

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Damn good start to the morning.
  • There is strength in silence at times that is stronger than speaking out.
  • I miss having a pet.
  • I’m a resilient son of a bitch.
  • Experience and life are teaching me some of the reasons people stop writing. I won’t be one of them though. Learning to use things for inspiration.

Take me Home

The song Take Me Home came on last night as I started the car to head home from one of my best friends. It brought a smile to my face with that warm thought on a cold night.

I don’t believe I could be comfortable in another home at this point. This place has become so much a part of me that I can’t imagine moving.

Moving would hurt my children I think. I always remember going to my Mom’s house as an adult and there is just something about wandering around the house you grew up in. I can see their comfort level when they come to visit to this day.

We hope to live out our days together here. I hope we can make that dream possible. Because it will always be home.

I’m eventually going to have to hire someone to shovel/plow the driveway though.

I figured this was an appropriate shot being we are getting snow tonight. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Music moves me to move.
  • Time to change the look of my office and workroom today.
  • I’ve got to start pushing myself a little harder in my new profession. I’m not satisfied with the results in the first 45 days.
  • Time for some snow shooting tonight. Now where did I leave my snow boots?

Doing?

What were your parents doing at your age? So ask the daily writing prompt.

That one required a little thought and addition. My father never made it close to my age. Passed decades before it. After being in the Navy during WWII and Korea and expeditions on Operation Deep Freeze, I won’t forget the sacrifices he made that provided me and others our freedom.

My Mom, still a widow was doing some part-time work at card stores, traveling, and doing volunteer work for the Red Cross at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Then again she might have been fighting one of the many medical challenges she had in her senior years. But that didn’t stop her from helping others and when she wasn’t under the weather, she was out busy doing something.

Help raise someone’s spirits today. Photo by Mike Hartley

Now what was Mom really doing? She was busy being loving, generous, and kind to people. She would help people, donate to charities, and always look for the good in people. She had a great smile. She was warm. She believed someone always had it worse off even when she was suffering. Not that she didn’t notice every ache and pain, but she also acknowledged many had them and worse. She spent great effort and time loving her family and friends.

As time has passed, those examples aren’t front and center as they once were. Sometimes when our parents come up in memories our kids might say something like the above, and I’ll smile. I also know as time passes their recollections fade even faster because they are shorter.

So I’m going to try to remember those many good qualities my parents had and the ones my mother and father-in-law also had and keep them going so our children take the positive and good ones and pass them to their children.

What I’ve been missing

This was the first Super Bowl I’ve watched from start to finish in the last decade. Working Sunday nights for those years kind of made it just another thing I was missing out on. It was a competitive game so it was fun to see from kickoff to the end of overtime.

Dad showing me the proper grip on a football.

I had just turned 9 in the photo above, we never got to watch a Super Bowl together because he passed just a month before the first one was played. I’m glad I got to watch a few with my son.

Another milestone also in the form of a holiday Monday next week. If a holiday fell on a Monday we were working. Also the Sunday night before the long holiday weekend. I was kind of giddy being off New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. And then off for MLK Day and now Presidents Day.

I find myself smiling and rested on a Monday now instead of exhausted. I look forward to holiday weekends knowing I’m available and can be at events with family and friends.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I thought it was a better-than-average year for Super Bowl commercials.
  • The more I accomplish each day, the better I feel.
  • Decisions are just a part of every day. Making the right ones makes the day easier.
  • A day full of errands, I think a pizza reward is in order.

Laws

The Daily writing prompt asks: If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

If I were to change one thing is that it would be to keep the violent offenders and rapist in for their full sentences at least. To hell with early parole and that good behavior bull getting their sentence cut.

We are a nation of laws. But we seem to still be troubled. We are the solution, we have the ability to change small and big things.

The powerful and wealthy have their justice and the other end gets another form. If laws aren’t applied equally, justice is slanted. We can right the ship if we try.

Invent

The Daily writing prompt asks what The most important invention in your lifetime is….

I got to admit I had to go look up what has happened during my lifetime to get the most accurate answer I could. I see birth control pill was invented the year I was born, as well as the 3 point seat belt. That one must have taken a while to catch on because as a youth I don’t remember wearing a seat belt till I was a young teenager when I started driving myself.

But its hard to choose as I look back over time between medical or energy or communication inventions which have been significant. Some medical advances have probably kept me living till today.

But then I stumbled on the Smoke Detector. In the early 70s the single station detectors were ready to be sold for homes. I believe hardwired ones became standard in the late 70s. While slow to take off they are in homes in this country in the high 90% range from what some searches have been saying.

I always have to remember to shut the windows before grilling. Photo by Mike Hartley

The number of lives saved and injuries prevented must be significant and its a gift that keeps on saving people and property. Proof that small things can bring big results.

Life and perspective

How do significant life events or the passage of time influence your perspective on life? Asks the daily writing prompt.

If I were to choose a one word answer to that question it would be “Profoundly.”

Significant events like deaths, early in my life changed me. Some of it made me stronger and other ways it took away confidence and security.

Time changes things over time. For instance the importance of the job over the years took on the shape of a bell curve over my career for me. Early on it wasn’t everything, then it really took off and it did become more important, and then more than it should have. And in the last few years many other things became priorities than the work being done for someone else.

Events give you experience and time gives you wisdom. For instance there is a lot of joy in creating a child. And that joy turns into a lot of wonderful smiles, memories and love in my heart and mind having helped raising them.

The passage of time changes all of us. We either adapt or not.

Every day you have the potential for events to change your perspective. It doesn’t have to be something drastic. It can be simple, from something someone says to you or how look at relationships in different ways from actions or inactions of others.

Creative

How are you Creative?, so asks the Daily Writing prompt.

I’m creative through my art interests like photography, drawing, carving/etching, and writing. But I feel I’m creative in almost all facets of life. From creative solutions at a technical job to well-timed humor with friends. From how I customized my cars in my youth to the games I invented with my grandchildren.

I found it difficult to be creative when depressed. But when I’m not it just flows.

Fitting photo for the morning given the 2-5 inches of rain the last serval hours. Photo by Mike Hartley

My granddaughter reminded me to be more free-thinking and creative in the time I spend drawing with her. As I teach her about contrasting colors and staying within lines, she teaches me to just do what comes to mind. To be happy doing it. To share it.

I feel I’m creative in love, cooking, and even in my workouts. Creativity can come from anywhere and in almost anything. From mowing the lawn to shaping the shrubs.

I’ve never felt more creative in my life. And I’m freeing up some time to express myself more this coming year.

All of us need to get busy coming up with creative solutions to a lot of the world’s problems.

Peaceful mornings

Mornings should be peaceful. And they usually are in the hours I’m up experiencing them. When I’m on vacation I found my normal rising time somewhere between 4-5 am in the mornings. That is a quiet and peaceful time.

My better half likes to sleep in so if I’m up and at work early at that 4-5 am hour, I won’t be taking away our together time. After that, the schedule is yet to be developed but I do like to start the day with as little chaos and as peacefully as possible.

There is a good chance I might even incorporate a mid-day nap if I’m staying up late doing evening shooting or out with the boys. I’ve read that a regular sleep schedule is good for the body and especially the mind. After decades of not having one, I think I can confirm that statement is true. I feel like I’ve taken years off my life working such an abnormal schedule.

So I hope it’s not too late to change that feeling and pattern for the better. At least we will finish the right way.

Here we go

One thing I know about publishing is consistency works. I’ve been anything but consistent when I publish posts. I’m all over the clock because of my crazy schedule now.

So starting in 2024 I will try doing morning and evening posts daily. And roughly the same timeframe each day in addition to trying to find the sweet spot in people’s viewing times but also so they know when my posts are regularly published.

Plus it will get me on a schedule of production and up and out the door each day my better half and I are healthy. But I’m a person that when an idea strikes I don’t like waiting on it so I’ll give it my best shot now for the two weeks remaining this year while I’m still working full time.

Which means I have a lot of work to do in the middle of the holiday season. So as the plate below says.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hope that I’m too busy living experiences instead of sitting around telling people about past ones.
  • If the music you’re listening to doesn’t move your shoulders and hips, you should find another tune.
  • If I could tell my younger self something important it would be to have more confidence in myself. Not that I’m not still working on it at this advanced age.
  • Having close friends over lifetimes is like making great music together.

Nosey

I love how dogs communicate with facial expressions. I think my Sons dog has a bit of a herding breed in her. She seems to use her nose to direct people. She also likes to put it against you if she is resting. But her main use is for food. She would be an elephant if not for her parents restraint.

This was shot a while back but I’m guessing she has this expression now. She is recovering from some surgery so she isn’t the happiest of campers yet.

I like how she furrows her brow when she is concerned like above. And then relaxes like below.

Writing

I’m no professional writer. Might never get close to being one but that won’t deter me. I didn’t even know I liked writing till I started blogging about a decade ago. I didn’t start off thinking I’d write much in this blog because it was for my photography.

Writing has turned into a joy and I hope to get much better now that I can devote some time and energy into it. In the past I’ve done a few poems for friends, humorous stuff. I’ve written a few touching things for special occasions.

And now I want to do a lot of it. I have no idea if I can accomplish it or will be satisfied with it but I’m going to try my hand at a few books.

The most important writing I do is to my children and that is often in the forms of almost daily emails.

But there is this itch to do something new in life. To make an impact. To help others and myself at the same time. So off I go to make the best use of this day and every one forward.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My hats off to Mr. Norman Lear. You helped change the world through laughter. RIP.
  • When I retire soon I worry about not being exposed to the young people at work who secretly challenge me to keep up with things and also their views and observations.
  • I love the thought of having the time to read more soon.
  • I didn’t realize the comfort I was giving up working on laptops the last few years till I got a nice desktop unit. These old eyes need screen real estate.
  • I slept 6 hours this morning. I haven’t slept 6 hours in a long while. It’s a nice feeling. The hair on my neck tingles at the thought of 7-8 hours.
  • My Mother could decorate the most beautiful Christmas trees I’ve ever seen.
  • We are all responsible for the demise of sports as one of the great things in life. Money has changed every level of it now and taken away many of the most special things about it.

Action

I feel like a movie set director this morning yelling ACTION to the crew and cast. The trouble is I’m the only one up. So I’ll get me, myself, and I in gear and see what the cast can accomplish.

The first order of business is to make sausage gravy and biscuits. Boy was that good. Now I have to do a cleanup. Always the worst part of cooking. A part I used to do when I was young working at restaurants.

I’m taking some biscuits and gravy to my grandson who I’ll see today. Might be too spicy for him. I’m sure his dad will consume it if so.

Listening to the song Lucky Man by ELP this morning. A live version that has me drifting back in time. It also is appropriate because I’m feeling lucky to be here. My better half just shared a photo of a friend’s husband in hospice.

Mental over physical. Nice concept that I haven’t fully perfected but I’ll keep trying. Pain is a nice adversary. One that only gets stronger as I age. So I have to keep upping my game at the same time both physically and mentally.

It’s never too late to make some positive changes. Long ago a friend suggested morning stretching and I adopted some of that routine. Recently I’ve cut out a lot of sodas and bad snacks which resulted in a nice weight loss.

I’m walking more this year than any in the recent past and using the treadmill when I can’t get out. But more steps are needed and why not get going on them?

Perspective

Well, I did it again. I passed out and broke my daily streak of posting. I think it was around 120 days this time. I’ve passed 200 before but illness or pain of some sort usually catches up with me at some point and I’ll sit down for a few minutes and I’m out cold. This time I had the 3 previous days where I had only slept maybe 10 hours combined.

My reaction to messing up my daily streak is different this time than in the past. I know I do this daily. I work on my photography daily now. I work on education daily in my crafts. I work on making things for loved ones or friends daily. I look to upgrade my writing daily. (I know it may not appear that way on this one). I’d love to do more woodwork but that might have to wait till next year to be added to the daily list.

So I’m working daily on more and more things important to me all the time. And that is my measure of success. And doing that at the same time while still working full time plus now is difficult at times, it’s still a ton of fun.

So I forgot to hit the publish button before sitting on the couch. No big deal. Another streak begins today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Holding a grandchild yesterday. Holding another grandchild today. Life is good.
  • I’m a big fan of history. That is why I watch events so closely each day.
  • I finally found an internal voice that balances out the one that says I LOVE FOOD.
  • Anytime I have a few free minutes, it’s happy hour time.

Two a days

I wonder if they still do two a days, 2 practice sessions a day in sports. The preseason prep for the regular season. Well, I think I’ll give that a go here. The time between now and my retirement is preseason and then the regular season begins next year.

Having the daily routine down I’m hoping to get into the morning and evening blast from mission control and post two a days. Sort of like the old days when your daily newspaper had a morning and evening edition. Now all I need to do is create interesting content and designs.

Old Man Inside/Outside

Time to be outside today with this wonderful weather. If there is an eject button on the couch use it today if you’re in the mid-Atlantic area. I’ve been up and cleaning the grill for later and putting up the umbrella and patio cushions.

Keeping it simple with burgers and hot dogs tonight. As we approach the midday hour remember to moderate a bit, it’s still warm out. As I was quickly reminded after a little time behind the push mower.

Food

Had a wonderful dinner at Pachanga Cocina Mexicana on Rt 40 in Ellicott City last night. My better half had the Burrito Maria Grande and I had the Crab and Shrimp Burrito Grande. Both were excellent with rice and black beans. A Fried Ice Cream for dessert and all was well on a Saturday night. Oh, and the service was great.

We will be returning again soon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feels good to have a functional workroom again.
  • Time to schedule some time off in August.
  • Is it wrong to eat your leftover burrito before 8 am the next morning?
  • I wonder what percentage of people cut their own yards? I guess the guys who sell home lawn equipment know because I’m guessing they have seen their numbers dip in this area.

Why

Because it’s therapy. Because it challenges me. Because it gives me a voice. Because it helps me learn. Because I meet others. Because it raises my spirits. Because it gives me ideas. Because it might provide a laugh or make me laugh. Because it might leave something for people to think about and at the same time makes me think.

That is why I’m blogging today.

A busy day and the workweek beginning have left me short on time. A common occurrence.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hate stubbing my toe.
  • There is a fine line between a mess and organized chaos.
  • The Who = Where every member played the Lead instrument. And the song was just the highway for the race.
  • I’m not a fan of days with more pain than without.

Precious

What I do with my time is the most precious commodity I have. Sometimes I wonder if I’m wasting some rambling on here each day right or should I just concentrate on the photo part? Or should I abandon that and focus on other arts? I don’t feel I waste a lot of time. I might check FB every 2-3 days for a few minutes. I don’t belong to Twitter, Instagram or TikTok, or whatever flavor of the day social media is. I don’t spend my day immersed in email or the smartphone.

I have a photo site with about 7500 images and growing that I’m going to make into something someday. And I have this mishmash of a blog. I guess I continue because it makes me happy. It doesn’t feel like work. Well, most of the time. Sometimes when my head isn’t on straight or depressed, it becomes difficult to write.

But I got to admit that I like it and find blogging somewhat therapeutic.

Don’t you dare roll through that STOP SIGN! Photo by Mike Hartley

“No Excuses” is a good motto to live by. I was thinking about this on the job the other day. I forgot to send something at the end of the shift because another coworker forgot to do something they promised to do earlier in the evening and I had to do that after my shift ended and forgot to get back to that last task of the shift because I was miffed. I thought about talking to my boss to explain myself and I said “No excuses.” Despite having to do something else unplanned I should have still done my role. So I didn’t make an excuse or talk to the boss.

I think I’ll try to go forward and not make any excuses. (let’s see how long that last)

Now, which boat do you want to be in the storm? Photo by Mike Hartley

Family is like the tide. Sometimes in and sometimes out. Being older and seeing my own family go through huge changes through decades and seeing other close families it’s an amazing thing. And sometimes surprises happen that are least expected. And sometimes things that seemed destined sadly become that way.

I’ve had some recent family successes and it feels good. Even for something I thought was over at one time.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Everything changes, but I thought the hope was for the better. Now I’m not so sure.
  • Raising children is difficult enough with both parents’ and grandparents’ involvement and support. Anything less is a miracle.
  • The reason we can’t get past important issues is that we are of two different minds.
  • It’s ok to admit you’re tired. You might find yourself in the majority.
