A few left

The cruising season is coming to a close. I was talking to one of my best friends who was taking his beast out for a ride this past weekend. There is nothing like a warm sunny day and a convertible. And luckily today and the next several days are made for the top-down.

But beyond that, the weather will be kind of hit-and-miss. And more often than not, the day will start out like the one below with frost greeting you each morning.

I think we might need some de-icing before liftoff. Photo by Mike Hartley

So I hope to enjoy the coming warm streak, look for the roads with some twisties and enjoy the last few leaves clinging to branches before falling to the ground.

And while out exploring the wonderful roads of Howard County I hope to find some final images of the fall season of color.

Rolling hills, farms, undeveloped areas. They are getting too far and few between. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m glad I still am not at the edge of the development madness, but it’s approaching fast as it always has been. Living at the southern edge of the county for decades in my youth and now at the northern edge, it’s at least a little peace and quiet. But as soon as you step in your car you know it’s caught up to you.

I believe I got one more cut to do also before I put my tractor away for the season. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Writing is fun. Then again I don’t subject myself to reading it.
  • I think I’ll get more of a charge donating a few dollars to the Maryland Food Bank than dreaming about what I would do with Powerball winnings and wasting money on losing tickets.
  • It is wise to guard against greed.
  • There is a lot of shivering ahead if your staying put here in the old-line state this winter.
  • The level of entitlement in people is out of control.

Frosty morning

This morning, I had to pull out my insulated vest over the sweat suit. That cold weather is on the way. And as my friends say “embrace the hawk” translation – enjoy the cold. Who knows, maybe I should have a change of attitude towards winter. My normal instinct is to hibernate inside and if I have to go outside hide the women and children because the curses fly continuously.

Despite the temps in the 30s, I was surprisingly okay with it. Then again I didn’t spend a long continuous time outside. But it was refreshing in some ways in the short burst. Not on my lips which are chapped because I forgot to start the daily chapstick routine. Another thing about winter I could do without is the dryness.

The World Series is still on. Why not little league games at Kiwanis Wallas Park? The sunrise hadn’t cleared the hill yet. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope I get the opportunity to get out again and snap some more images and colors before the season changes the look of everything. But that creates new opportunities also.

So I’m wishing you all a beautiful morning and day ahead. Mine is about to get busy.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I got lost in the beauty of the season a few times while driving around and missed a few good photos because I kept enjoying what was over the next hill so much.
  • I made my very young grandson laugh hard yesterday, my proudest moment of the day.
  • I find it hard to say some things. I know that is difficult to believe for as much as I ramble on.
  • Props to my better half for sticking with me for 42 years. It’s hard, to sum up, the effort that probably took in words but “I love you” always was a good start for both of us.

2 and 4 wheels

I was reading a thread on the neighborhood site Nextdoor and the topic was bicyclists and cars sharing difficult roads in Howard County. And boy did it seem to start a firestorm. As you can suspect bad drivers were an issue but also bad cyclists also. There might be a few people in this county that have put more miles on a car and bike here but the number is small.

Share the road. Photo by Mike Hartley

As a youth, I put on many miles on the bicycle. We used to live on our bikes as youngsters. A large paper route for a few years as I grew, peddling to jobs anywhere from 5-6 miles from home before I got my license. And yes I’ve been clipped by a car on a bike. I’m so old we used to ride on Rt 29. I’ve ridden motorcycles for 3 decades in this county. I was driving years before I had my license so 50 years in a car now.

These are just my observations. Pretty much no matter where you lived in this county in the 60s you could ride a bike and there wasn’t an issue for motorists or cyclists. In the ’70s with the expansion of Columbia and Rt 29 and other roads became much more active, wider, and faster. This is the decade police stopped me for riding a bike on Rt 29 to my job at the Mall. But it was still pretty safe in a lot of the county.

In the last 4 decades, the volume of both types of traffic continued to increase at staggering rates. And here we are today with beautiful back roads and scenes choked with cars and bikes. On top of that our tolerance for each other went out the window a few years ago and now we have games of chicken repeated in front of us over and over.

Uncaring people trying to pass in blind spots for oncoming traffic instead of having a few seconds of patience to safely pass on a good vision spot. Then there are the ballsy ones that Mr. Karma is about to take issue with who regardless of what oncoming traffic will attempt to run head-on to you because they are going to pass that bicyclist no matter what.

I’ve noticed bad behavior on both sides but far less from cyclists than motorists. But riding a motorcycle is by far the most dangerous around here because you are out on the major roads and people don’t look to see you. I’d say this is the highest incidence per mile ridden of almost being killed and that is saying something because I’ve been hit badly in two car accidents, one where it took them forever to get me out of the car because it was mangled so badly where the roof had to be cut off because they couldn’t get any of the doors open. That is after they took the pickup truck off the front and top of the car. Strange things happen to a car when it’s hit at a standstill by someone doing 60mph from behind.

I found some stats for Howard County from 2016-2020 from the state in a PDF that is all numbers. Numbers of people injured and killed in many situations including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and vehicles. I hate numbers. Because when you are talking people, we are not numbers. I hate what I see us doing to each other on the roadways no matter what your mode of transportation is.

Selfishness is killing and injuring us needlessly. Some of these stats are not accidents.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I got up too early.
  • I’m staying up too late.
  • Good thing I took a nap.

Yabba dabba doo

I feel like Fred Flinstone when he gets off work. For this is the last work night of the week and spirits are high. Sometimes I take for granted how lucky I am and thankfully I catch myself now and then. Are things perfect, far from it but that is life. As long as I’m here to fight another day, life is good.

And I’m excited about the coming weekend because today has gone so well already after a wonderful dinner with my daughter. And tomorrow I’m spending time with close friends. Then a day with the granddaughter and life couldn’t be better.

So what will ring my bell tonight? Photo by Mike Hartley

On the other hand, the back end of the weekend looks very cool. And if you go out at night downright cold. So I think I’ll make good use of that time indoors those days. I have a lot more prints queued up to make larger prints. So let me get to work on that and wish everyone a good night.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Funny how minds work. They can sometimes drive you crazy.
  • Do you ever feel for someone so much that it hurts?
  • Breakfast, the meal that could be called dinner.
  • I promise to do better here and everywhere tomorrow. Because I’m almost out of time today.

Street parking

I’ve never been one for street parking. It’s like asking for problems. For instance, I could park right in front of my dentist’s office on Main Street in Ellicott City for appointments, but you won’t catch me doing that even on a rainy day. I’ll use the lot behind the old firehouse.

Because after one walk yesterday I see evidence that this is a wise move. Not that this is any surprise. I see people who can’t control a car or are too busy to feel like paying attention to driving every time I get behind the wheel. Why would I think a narrow city street wouldn’t be an issue.

I have no interest in adding someone else’s paint color to my car. Photo by Mike Hartley

In some ways, it’s good people do choose to park on the street still. It protects us a little bit walking the sidewalks. But then again you should be ready to duck a flying side view mirror which can easily be sent skyward.

I can’t see you anymore. Photo by Mike Hartley

In some ways, it’s surprising to see the remnants of cars on the street, but after hearing tires skid and the familiar sound of metal and glass crunching over the years this mind says to use the parking lots.

The road is no place to be making glass mosaics. Photo by Mike Hartley.

But at the end of my observation of this car carnage, I saw a mother and child walking up the street picking up loose trash from the streets of this beautiful town. So people do care, and I hope there are more of us than those who don’t.

Yes, these are from yesterday’s walk, busy night at work so haven’t been out yet today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Doing good work at the job, bringing in projects, making things as perfect as possilbe just doesn’t seem as important as it once did. Sometimes age is good for perspective.
  • If there is a pill for everything why do people still die from illness?
  • The song “I can see for miles” by The Who is not an appropriate tune for a foggy morning.
  • Food and money have a lot in common. Some people have a lot and some people have none.
  • There is no reason to purchase a stairmaster. Life is a big enough climb on its own.

Walking OEC

I took a walk this morning in one of my favorite towns. Sort of like a home away from home. Got married in Ellicott City, worked in Ellicott City, started a business in Ellicott City. So I’m familiar with it. From the 60s when we first moved here, till today, I walk those streets a few times a year, or more when it was working there.

I always find something new. When you get to visit a place and experience each season, it reveals a new town quarterly.

Don’t just stay on Main Street. Venture off the beaten path. Photo by Mike Hartley

Another thing is you just have to stop and look around. Front back, side to side, up and down. And low and behold things reveal themselves.

Sometimes things pop out of areas you wouldn’t think of.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I have a very hard time understanding people who don’t have an appreciation for life. And even less tolerance for them.
  • Some days I feel like I’ve maximized every minute of the day. I either feel great for such and accomplishment or to exshausted to appreciate it.
  • It’s one thing when I cost myself sleep, its an entirely different thing when others interfere.

The gift of time

Time is a gift I smile about each day. I’ve always appreciated being given another day, more so each day now the older I get. It’s a gift that also comes in many ways. Time to accomplish a goal at the job, time to share a meal with a loved one. Time to play with a grandchild.

Wandered up this street many times. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think a lot about time now because I’m so torn on how much longer to work. It would be an easy call if we were well prepared but like many, we are a little short of what I had hoped for. And the longer I work the more comfortable we will be if we live a long life.

I’ve seen my best friends change and start to do more activities, trips, cultural and fun things. And on all fronts. Wives, friends, children all are getting more time. Not one to be the last out of the pits I’m getting organized and moving.

You know, sometimes it doesn’t have to be that killer trip that makes a year. This will be the first year our family doesn’t take a trip together to Ocean City. So the planning begins with that. Where and when can everyone make it to for some short visits?

There are so many options my head is spinning about it so I’m going to let the others think and talk about it and see where the wind is blowing. I’ll throw suggestions out and I’m very flexible.

But I also hope to really get back to exploring Maryland and the surrounding states. I already have several days and weekend trips to be thrown out for consideration. I want to roam the Chestertown area. I’ve been to Ocean City for at least 40-50 years but I’ve never been down to Assateague Island. That is a must-do. It has been 3+ decades since I’ve been out to Deep Creek MD.

I’ve never been to Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg Maryland. Yep add that to the list of places west of home.

I’d like to visit the 3 art museums in Baltimore. Of course, I have to try out the new Horseshoe casino while we are down there getting cultured. It’s been decades since I’ve been to Sandy Point state park. I made my first trip to Gibson Island last summer and I must go back there.

Maybe a weekend bed and breakfast in St Michael’s and a visit to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. I know we have never been to Smith Island and if we go for no other reason than to get a cake, that alone is good enough.

Also, I’ve heard The National Cryptologic Museum is a good visit. Not the photographic places I normally like but would be interesting to know more about that art. And if I’m in that educational vain I might take in NASA The Goddard Space Flight Center. And while I’m there I might as well continue down the road to the new National Harbor and see how that is developing.

Another neglected site is St Mary’s Maryland. I know that area is beautiful. Also Chesapeake beach for a stay on the water at one of the fine hotels.  As well as the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and National Historical Park in Williamsport Maryland.

The Air and Space Museum in Dulles VA would also be good to spend a day at. Then take a real ride back in time on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

So it looks like I have a start to a good list of things to do this year. Let me see what interests my better half and what others I can add to it. I just hope we can get a couple in because it’s a very busy year with work and family expanding.

I saw a flurry of activity on a post on the NextDoor site about the amount of trash on Rt 70 and 29. They should add Rt 40 and 99 and 144. All the major arteries that lead to the dump. I’ve lived up in this part of the county now for 36 years and the problem isn’t getting someone out there to clean it up, the problem is how is it getting there in the first place.

And from what I’ve observed it’s a lot of people taking stuff to the dump and not having the load covered or secured. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen stuff dropped or blowing out of a truck bed. Maybe if each of us tries better we can have a bit less trash to pick up.

I think I’ll do my part while wandering the county for photos and pick up stuff as I see it. Every little bit helps.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The free time of the day was short, the list of chores for the day was long. I’m not satisified with either.
  • Some days I don’t start with the confidence that I’ll create a new post here. But I’m glad I overcome that. Helps give me confidence in other things.
  • A piece of advice for young people. If you got questions for older people, don’t wait to ask them.
  • Baseball doesn’t have Cal Ripkin to save it again after another lockout.

Fields of Dreams

A short morning ride early in the morning after daybreak allowed for a few images before returning to the homestead. I can’t wait till the following fields are full again of activity instead of dormant.

Hold on, spring is coming. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s so cold and spring seems so far away but if I can hold on another 2-3 weeks I might be able to see the light again. I don’t know the totals but it seems we haven’t gotten all that much snow this season. Dustings to a few inches here and there.

And the trees are lined up in their lanes waiting for the starting gun. Photo by Mike Hartley

I can’t complain, I’ve only picked up the shovel once this year and that was an easy one to clear. Not deep and light fluffy snow. Hopefully, that streak will remain intact for the rest of the season.

No spring training yet. Here or in Florida. Photo by Mike Hartley.

I was talking to my neighbor and asked when his son returned to the O’s spring training and he reminded me of the MLB lockout in effect. It really disgusts me, lots of rich people arguing about huge sums of money and shooting their future in the foot.

It was a snowy morning in Woodstock. Photo by Mike Hartley

I can’t wait to start getting out in the mornings again when the weather warms up. I plan on doing a ton of walking and exploring this year. I hope everyone has a great Stupor Bowl. Don’t go overboard and get a ride home if you need it.

Instead of worrying about a gift you can’t find because of supply issues or a rise in cost so much, think about making something personal. And by making something it could mean writing a letter with your thoughts and feelings. Make a meal, warm up the car for them, take care of some overdue chores. There are a million things you can do for that someone special.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There are only so many opportunities. Seize them.
  • There is a lot of trouble ahead you might want to get to appreciating the days we live in now.
  • There was a ton of reason for dispair before todays Maryland/Perdue game. But they made a great showing on national TV and redeemed themselves after that mess earlier in the week.

An hour of smiles

Yesterday was the car show at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn in southern Howard County. A very nice mixture of cars and owners. Given the list of chores back at home I didn’t spend long, about an hour just up and down each aisle and I’m sure more cars came in after I left so this is a small sampling. I really should have shot more. The sun came out more on my ride back home.

Classics to contemporary were found here. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was glad I took the time to go see some of these works. I love the arts and I see design and art in every car creation. And just like all art, some is better than others but even the attempts are good works because you don’t get great on your first attempt.

A trio of Speedsters. Photo by Mike Hartley

Sometimes it’s maintaining a classic car and body style. Others are massive modifications to classic or current platforms. Both can be stunning to me. I guess that is a bit of the old youthful enthusiasm I had for cars. Big American muscle cars.

The old Chevy phrase on the front panel there says “The Heartbeat of America.” Well, I bet his neighbors at least know when he starts that Heartbeat up. Photo by Mike Hartley

The reinterpretation of original design. The use of color and textures. The brilliance of chrome or width of a tire, the smell of leather or high octane fuel, the sound of a wonderfully tuned exhaust or open headers, it’s all here.

This might have been my favorite of the show. Nice Foose rim choice. Photo by Mike Hartley

The hidden arts of engine building and tuning. The underside of frame suspension and brakes. Yes being able to stop is nice. The vehicle can be a masterpiece on so many levels.

The chrome is even more impressive if it has some get up and go underneath it. Photo by Mike Hartley

This was a nice break and I’ll look for future events like this in our area because this kid needs to get out and about more. Plus the next one I’ll haul one of my best friends there with his Vette. I know I’m going to go check the calendar because I’ve always wanted to attend that Cruising Ocean City event in the fall. Oct 7-10 this year I believe.

The car’s front tires were wider than most rear tires.

I think I’ll post the rest another day, for there are many chores still on the list today. But some of them are fun like grilling out so I won’t complain.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Why does my mind draw a blank with the statement from my better half “do you need anything at the store” and then remember when I’m unloading the groceries from the car?
  • Another workweek begins. I think I’ll resume my countdown. That is one thing when I moved from the office to the home office that I didn’t continue. I had a few post it notes on my monitor that had a countdown of weeks to work left. Maybe because I didn’t have to make that drive and was reminded how much I hated it when I finally sat down at my station. Now the commute is much better.
  • My thoughts today have been filed with teachers returning to school. Because I’m a parent of teachers after I was a parent myself. I’m going to say a few extra prayers in hopes of a better year for them.

Wishing

Back to back sunny days here in central Maryland on Saturday and Sunday morning had me in a sunny mood. No pressing emergencies and a few free hours to work on my crafts so life is good as my tee-shirt says yesterday morning. Well, that was the situation before my neighbors tried to light the hood on fire with an open burn that got out of control. Thankfully it only burned structures on their property.

In todays postWishingPitifulRandom Thoughts of the Day

Fire out, Its an new week. Photo by Mike Hartley

Wishing – Only a few hours before the workweek starts anew. I remember the days the time before a new week would form a lot of anxiety for me. Almost to the point of panic attacks at times. Sometimes the pressure was of my own making in my own mind. I can be pretty hard on myself. Other times it was external pressures from managers and directors. Today I have none of that.

It’s not like I’m afraid of pressure or doing difficult things or taking responsibility or driving/doing something myself. But I was always afraid of judgments of others be they fair or not so I would always overprepare and overwork it so everything would go right.

Most of it was my own problem. People had much more confidence in me than I did in myself. And yes I worked hard to earn it but never gave myself credit along the way.

And then at some point, all this changed. I don’t worry about the work or what people think or judge my success by the words of others. Frustration with superiors or coworkers has disappeared. I just do my thing and look forward to the weekends. It’s a nice freedom I haven’t had most of my career.

Pitiful – What do sick children and sick animals have in common besides looking pitiful? Neither can communicate what is wrong. That is one of the most frustrating things in life. I’m seeing my granddaughter get sick every so often as every child does and I remembered that fear.

But what is also pitiful are adults without any common sense and complete disregard for the law or others. No, I’m not going to talk politics here I’m going to talk about one of my neighbors. They have had several illegal burns over the last year. They had one so close to their house that the brick is black in sections from the fire. I gave them county regulations on it and that didn’t matter. I threatened to call the fire marshal and that didn’t matter. So yesterday morning they started a huge pile of brush, branches, and logs about 5-6 foot high and lit it. I said as soon as he lit it they were too close to their bird coops. Sure enough one catches fire. And of course, the plastic sheeting covering the metal frame goes up but there are plywood and hay inside so it’s got lots of fuel. Tweddle de and Tweddle dumb were out trying to put it out bucket by bucket and all it was doing is getting worse so I called the fire department.

No, normally I would have suggested to anyone else that it was too close to other structures. I would normally immediately try to help them put it out. But these are not normal neighbors. They have proven over and over they don’t give a rat’s ass about anyone else. So I sent the county the videos of previous burns they did that I videoed and I’m calling the fire department if I see them outside with a match. I’ll also continue to file the zoning complaints because they are now constructing another building too close to the property line and I feel it’s going to be used for the birds again which they were forced by the county to move once already. So it’s just a game to them.

Well obviously they have no idea with they are F’ing with.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I wonder if CopperFit makes a full-body sleeve. Because some days everything seems to hurt.
  • Do Sunday mornings seem quieter?
  • It’s depressing taking Christmas lights down.
  • I’m dreaming of summer vacation.
  • How bout Dem TERPS.

Random Political Thoughts of the Day

  • So the new Right-wing chant is Hang Mike Pence. Really nice guys. Summary executions because you don’t like someone doing their job.
  • Let me get this straight. The current president preaches law and order but LOVES the people who killed a Capital Policeman?
  • I’m all for free speech but running into a theater and yelling FIRE or standing up on an airplane and yelling bomb is still a CRIME. Inciting a riot against one of the branches of government that leads to the death of a policeman is a CRIME.
  • Guess what America. Those angry, hateful, threatening people on video all went home someplace. And most of them weren’t from the DMV (DC, MD, VA).

Trial and Failure

In this post below – Trial and Failure – Howard County TodayRandom Thoughts of the Day

Trail and Failure – I’ve been pretty harsh editing the last few days and thrown out a lot of shooting. That used to bother me but I’m trying to challenge myself to better the quality of images. So really I had nothing from last night’s shoot. But this shot reminded me there is a new dawn coming tomorrow and I should keep trying and not let failure stop me or slow me or affect me other than to learn from it.

It’s a hard thing to overcome, a failure that is. I guess we all should be used to it because everyone has some failures in their lives. I’ve failed a great number of times. And I’ll probably fail some more. It doesn’t feel good when it happens. Sometimes it’s hard to let go of. I know at times in my life I’ve been afraid of failure enough to not try. And that is a bigger failure in reflection.

I’ll do better next time. Photo by Mike Hartley

Sometimes it’s all in how you look at it. For instance, I wanted to do some more sanding today and only got to spend a few minutes on that goal. It looks like I’ve got nothing done and failed at this task. I felt successful because I didn’t blow it off entirely because of limited time today.

I remember failure as a young baseball player. I was just more comfortable playing pickup. Put a uniform on me and people on the side and I was a basket case. I wasn’t horrible, I just wasn’t able to do my best because I was too afraid of making a mistake. I got tense and nervous.

It’s easier as you age to separate failure from trying. Professional baseball players strike out, they make errors. That feeling of failure from a single plate appearance is nothing. But losing the ability to come to bat the next time thinking hit and an average of .500 is another.

So like I stated the other day I’m going to be trying things with this blog. I’m sure I’ll have many failures on top of the many examples already.

Howard County Today – I thought I’d start a section about the wonderful county I live in. Growing up we used to refer to it as Hazard County. But really it was a wonderful place to grow up myself and then raise a family. It’s a place I will probably pass one day from this earth. I was 3 years old in late 1960 when we moved to the southern part of the county.

And except for a 4-year stint in Catonsville, I’ve been in this county all my life. Even when I lived in Catonsville I worked in the county. So we were here before Columbia and saw that great change. We have seen multiple floods in the area. We have experienced the continued explosion of the population and land being swallowed up at alarming rates.

Just out of high school I was lucky enough to land a job with the Times Newspapers. This allowed me a wonderful and expanded perspective of the area for a few decades. It was wonderful experiencing the people of the county. Seeing their stories and photos grace the pages of local papers. Meeting them when they would come in to pick up shots of their sons or daughters at this or that game or award. I would meet them at the Times Information booth at the Howard County fairgrounds and other events each year. I could see new places through the lens of our photographers.

But now it’s time for me to start documenting the county and maybe mixing in some older shots along the way where it’s of historical interest.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I like writing in the mornings, but it’s a little tougher after being up all night.
  • Watching basketball makes me want to get outside and shoot. Someone page me when the temps hit 60+ degrees again. Go Terps
  • Learned about anchors today. Not the kind my Dad would think of being he was in the Navy.
  • That was an interesting call between Orange Julius and the Georgia election officials. It reminded me of a few conversations I’ve had in my life. And as I recall one of them, my statement to the VP was “I don’t care what that manager asked me to put in the report, it wasn’t the truth so I didn’t do it.”
  • Tip the people who work in your community. We are getting back in the habit of giving something to our recycle and trash teams. Buy a patrolman a coffee or the guy plowing your neighborhood streets. Maybe a bag of cookies for your mailman. Stop by and say hello and thank you to the guy opening and closing our parks and rec areas each day.
  • If I keep creating sections in this blog to fill with photos, I’ll be a happy camper.

Thank you and Condolences

I learned of the passing of a member of my newspaper family yesterday. Bob Moon was the husband of Jean Moon, the General Manager of the Patuxent Publishing Newspaper chain located in Columbia Maryland. An Architect, Bob designed the Flier Building in Columbia where I worked for 17 years. His death has triggered a lot of memories for me and I’m sure many others.

Patrick’s Entrance for us old timers. Photo by MIke Hartley

I had started with the Times Newspapers when they were in Ellicott City on Main Street in an old run-down building that now houses LaPalapa, SuCasa Furniture, and Main Street ballroom. Yes, this was back in the ’70s. The age and character of the building matched the wild personalities on the inside. The place was blue-collar, rough, and tumble old school. Some might even say a bit of old country Howard County.

This was a full production facility. Pressroom, Mailroom, Engraving, Typesetting workers in production and with Editors, Writers, Designers, Salespeople, Truck drivers out front. The place was loud and dirty and it constant chaos. But I did love it also.

In 1979 Patuxent Publishing purchased several of the Times papers, others closed or were sold to other buyers. The Times building was sold along with most of the equipment and like the Clampets we packed up our bags and headed to Columbia.

The Flier Building. I was beautiful with a flag on that pole and that tree in front blooming pink blossoms. Photo by Mike Hartley

There were many difficult days when this transition took place. First, we lost a lot of old friends. If memory serves me right before I look at the newspaper clipping I have on the wall of the sale we had a few hundred employees in EC. I think only about 60 of us were hired by Patuxent.

We had our tail between our legs because the competition had won and bought us out. Soon to be gone was the place where I learned my trade and a lot of people I loved working with. This transition was rough on both sides and took a lot of adapting by all involved. But two very different cultures and backgrounds soon developed into a new community of people working together. It was a wonderful transition to something that we all cherish dearly to this day even though decades have passed. Sometimes when your being handed a pass to Camalot you don’t really know it at the time.

Home for a few decades. Photo by Mike Hartley

The two buildings couldn’t have been any more different. Main Street was old and falling apart. The Flier building was brand new constructed in 1978 I believe. Main Street was dark and dirty. It was a brick building covered in many years of ink and newsprint dust. The Flier building was WHITE, clean, and pristine and didn’t smell bad. It has so many windows, some floor to roof, and skylights letting the days light and added a beautiful feel to the space inside. It had angles on top of angles, big staircases, and tall open ceilings in much of the upstairs.

There were planters filled with trees and flowers in a vast open lobby in Columbia. Kind of ironic if you think about it. The only trees that came into Main street were in the form of Newsprint rolls that weighed around 2 tons each. If you brought a plant into the Main Street office it would have been dead in 24 hours due to the chemical and ink smell, lack of light, and covered with the newsprint lint. The bathrooms were clean in this new office. You didn’t worry about ruining clothes by accidentally brushing a wall or door as you did on Main Street. It had air conditioning which that old drafty and dirty location in EC only had in the front offices. In the summer we would sweat like pigs and in the winter we would freeze our behinds off.

The new building was one of the first things I warmed up to. Maybe because it actually did have heat and A/C. But in meeting Bob I could see where his inspiration for the remarkable design of the Flier came from. He would always give me a warm smile just like the skylights scattered throughout the building did. He would stop and talk or invite me to his office which was next door to our photography/reproduction area to look at new architectural drawings. Bob was a talker. I know because they say it takes one to know one, and I am one. I think one of my first visits to the building for my interview for a job, Bob was out in the lobby and introduced himself with a welcoming smile. He wasn’t part of PPC but he was in a special way.

The longer I was there the more it felt like home. New friendships were made and many have lasted to this current day. It was a special place to work. With Bob’s design and Jean’s spirit that place was as alive as anything, I’ve experienced. Jean was a driving force for that organization. And their spirit was infectious to many who worked there for many years.

Thankfully many people above me allowed me opportunities that allowed my career to flourish. And in that, I got to work and touch many areas. There might be only a small handful of people who know that building better than I do. I think I crawled and worked in every inch of it several times over. I was there day and night so I got a great view from it. You always knew what the weather was because there was a window or skylight everywhere. Well, not the restrooms but everywhere else.

You could see your friends coming in from a good distance so you could prepare pranks on them. You could see who was having a rough day and was out walking or sitting in the parking lot or deck behind the building. You could look out the back windows at the huge daycare facility and watch the hundreds of little tykes in their Halloween costumes doing their annual parade around the parking lot. You could go up the ladder in the loading dock to the roof with a folding chair and look out over Columbia. Oops, that part wasn’t well known.

The old Editorial area. Photo by Mike Hartley

The place had a grand lobby. It was where we would gather for our company photos. It was where half my crew would be caught trying to chat up the receptionist of the day after dropping off reproductions to the design departments.

I lost count of the times the interior space was redesigned for our constant expansion. And Bob seemed to be part of that process often. The whole building felt like my home. It was small enough where you knew all the inhabitants but large enough to not be a mom and pop shop. We were the second-largest publisher in the state of Maryland behind the Baltimore Sun which eventually purchased the company shortly after I left.

Light from above. Photo by Mike Hartley

They say the tone of a company comes from the top. Well, Bob and Jean created a beautiful place, filled with a beautiful spirit, a ton of ambition and dedication. And that feeling seemed to trickle down to everyone who walked through those doors to work there. And when I left there I had some tears in my eyes because I knew something special was passing.

Bob faced some daunting and huge medical challenges in his life but that smile remained.

So thank you Bob for designing a wonderful home and to you both for making it feel like a real family lived there. RIP Bob.

PS: Please forgive the quality of these pictures. I had the opportunity to visit the building after it closed and the staff had moved downtown Baltimore. So it’s far from its pristine and beautiful days. Especially when it was filled with a lot of great people doing wonderful work and having fun together.

But for how long

I was down in Ellicott City taking a few shots and I saw the Bar Open sign on the Manor Hill establishment and I thought for a second for how much longer. I see our Governor did an update the other day because like most states our numbers are climbing again. I like his frankness when he said “Just wear a damn mask.”

Bar Open for how long? Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m guessing it won’t be long till we are reverting back to some rules we had earlier this year if things don’t improve. I know I’m going to start scaling back again. But at the same time, I hope to get out more for a little exercise. This holiday season is a good time for me to work on the beach body. Not that this has been a successful effort the last few years but I’ll always keep trying. At this age, I’ll settle for a 4 pack.

I really don’t like the sun going down so early. Photo by Mike Hartley

Yesterday’s walk was nice because I was able to wear shorts and a tee-shirt and that weather will make it a nice few days ahead also. And this Friday didn’t disappoint at all.

No twisted traffic today in town. Photo by Mike Hartley.

Today I put on my yard maintenance hat again and see if the body holds up to the day’s activities. Got the front half done yesterday. And if I’m fast about it I might take a walk with the camera later today. I also have to spend some time carving this evening.

One of my best friends just gave me some great news. I’m so happy for him and his wife. During these times it’s good to appreciate the good news of any type. Because life is about focusing on good moments.

So I hope everyone is having both a healthy and good weather day to enjoy this wonderful Saturday.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Felt good feeling that sun on my skin yesterday. Would have felt better on the beach but I’ll take it while sitting on the tractor.
  • More sun and fun today. The top is coming down. High test in the tank. Traction control OFF.
  • I’m on a mission again. Feeling positive and challenged.
  • You know what is really funny. I see Trump’s family is asking the GOP to have some backbone. Don’t they know their father removed their spines long ago?

A few minutes

Went out to drop my ballot off this morning and was lucky to catch the sunrise at a corner near my home. I’ve got to make a practice of getting out around sunrise because it just starts your day right.

Photos by Mike Hartley – from corner of Woodstock and Rt 99.

It gets me in a productive state of mind. Let’s see if I can keep the momentum going this fine Halloween Day.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I have discovered I need much less shampoo than when my hair was longer.
  • As the leaves fall this time of year, it reminds me I have neighbors through the woods behind us.
  • Working through difficult times makes you stronger. It does come with scars though.
  • I feel bad for the kids this year in regards to Trick or Treating. On the other hand, there may be more candy in the house.

Choices

Decisions decisions, I wonder what the fall will bring. Will I have to return to the office next year? When will I feel comfortable eating inside again with many people? Will the country break out in civil war after November 3rd? What will the Christmas season look like this year? Will the flu shot be effective? Hitting the PAUSE button. Reset mind. Think of the sun setting on Summer and enjoying the last few warm days of the year.

Seasons changing soon. Photo by Mike Hartley

Well, the choices I make today are enjoying the beautiful weather. Love those around me. Maybe take a few photos. Make a charitable contribution. Take a ride with the top down. Knock out a few chores and maybe a nap before my work week starts this evening.

As I was telling a friend the other day one of the things I’ll really enjoy about retirement is being able to have a holiday weekend. I’ve missed many over the years because of work. Such is life though. You would be surprised at how many people work on holidays and weekends. Think about the services you need 24/7/365. There are lots of them, aren’t there. A tip of the hat to all those working with me this holiday weekend. And to the day we can celebrate with the rest of society at the same time.

I’ve dried the morning dew from my ride and headed out and grabbed a few frames in one of my standby places. Old Ellicott City. They are having a sidewalk sale this weekend so it’s a good spot to go out, enjoy the weather, and support local merchants. Of course, I was there too early for them to be out so just a few joggers, cyclists, and couples out for a morning bite to eat and coffee.

What a beautiful morning. A sweatshirt was needed with the top down because the temp on the car dash said 59 degrees as I cruised from my home to EC.

This used the be the loading dock entrance to the Times Papers. I unloaded many a truckload of newsprint there. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a special town in many ways for me. It was my first job in my lifelong chosen profession. My wife is from this town. I started my own business in this town. I got married in this town.

I never get bored shooting this town. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve enjoyed shooting this town in good times. I’ve had to photograph it after floods and fires and it broke my heart. Sort of like life. Good times and difficult times.

I wouldn’t mind cycling into town. It’s the hills getting out of it I’d have an issue with. Photo by Mike Hartley

Everyone who moves from this area says how they miss this town. I can see why. There are a lot of friendly people here. Especially the locals and merchants.

Back in the 60s and 70s this was the firehouse. I believe they are still putting out fires, just with a different liquid. Photo by Mike Hartley.

It’s funny that the attachment still feels so strong. There has been so much changing there. Businesses I’ve loved gone. Important people passed or moved on. And now with the flood mitigation, the look of the town will change yet again when some buildings come down.

You can find it all here. Photo by Mike Hartley

It can be a challenging town to walk. Sidewalks aren’t that wide at points. But do venture up and down the side streets also and up to the courthouse area. Hell explore the whole town.

Might have to go visit this store, we will be looking for area rugs soon. Photo by Mike Hartley

I guess I’ve shot enough of this city for a while. I think I’ll venture to a new town in Howard County tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There is no such thing as a bad nap.
  • Nothing like good weather to lift the spirits.
  • Having come from a military family I find comments of Losers and Suckers so disturbing and offensive that he should be barred from any military installation and cemetery. If he goes to Arlington I’ll be meeting him to tell him he is the only Loser and Sucker on these grounds.
  • I’m recharged, I saw my children this weekend.
  • To all the teachers. If Tuesday is your first day back I urge you to treat yourself to a relaxing and enjoyable day on Monday.

Hump day observations

Don’t you miss being part of a huge crowd at a concert with everyone moving in rhythm to the music and singing in unison together?

I miss seeing people smile. But then again I don’t miss all the people with snarls on their faces.

Boardwalk expressions. Photo by Mike Hartley

I miss feeling comfortable around people.

Does music seem more important now?

Memories keep drawing us back to dangerous behavior.

I suggest taking all the empty shopping malls and turn them into schools.

I saw some leaves falling today. I almost screamed NOOOOO. It’s far too early for fall.

Duchess Sandwich Shop

Sweet simple and satisfying. We went to this EC mainstay for a quick snack today being we put off our day trip to the Antinum battlefield. We got two sandwiches, a birch beer, and a chocolate shake. Oh yeah, a bag of chips all for under $15. Took it down to the parking lot B behind the building we started a business many years ago and looked over the river and had lunch with the top down. I sucked down the shake before I had a chance to take a picture of it.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I read from WJZ that the Annapolis Capital Gazette is closing its offices. They will continue to publish it says. I wonder what fate awaits me, back to the office, or work from home next year.
  • I’m very sorry to see the Maryland fall sports postponed/canceled this year but I believe it was the right decision for the safety of the kids and community.
  • I’m so tired today.

Doing OK Today

Never wait to say what is in your heart.

I may be the luckiest man on earth for the wonders I’ve been given.

Get it together, help others get it together, help them help others get it together.

To my better half. I’m sorry I haven’t provided all the joys of life you so richly deserve.

I’m sorry if anyone feels I haven’t been there for them.

Time to relieve the pain.

I was catching up on some reading of events while I was on vacation a few weeks ago and read that Fernand G.M. Tersiguel passed. I can’t say I was a frequent diner but when I did it was a great meal and his smile and staff made it a great evening. Ellicott City will miss him.

Good thing you guys don’t rely on me for breaking news.

There are few things as satisfying as a cold Coke in a Bottle. Especially after working outside in the 90-degree heat. I don’t know what it is about a bottled Coke but it is different. Maybe just colder, I don’t know but its better. I’ll go to Google it later. I’m sure there is an opinion or an actual reason.

So why don’t I buy it in bottles? I have no answer. I got a bottled 4 pack from my Son as a gift recently and I save them like a vintage wine. It’s almost ceremonial. When I have one, that is what I do for the next 10 minutes. I don’t open it and walk away, I don’t get up and go to my desk with it and sit it next to the warm computer. I kick back on the couch and sit it on the glass table in front of me. I lean forward and take a sip. Of course, that is followed by a belch and I lean back. This act is repeated like that plastic bird that would bend over and dip its beak in water and then bounce back to an upright position. Life’s simple pleasures. Well, back outside to work.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I believe basic practical skills will once again be in great demand.
  • Time for a random donation today.
  • I’m conflicted. I’m beginning to like my hair long again but it’s not too popular with my better half.
  • If at any point in your life you discover how blessed you are no matter your circumstances, and you are able to just feel thankfulness, is the day you are alive and at peace. I don’t mean this in the religious or spiritual sense but just in life.

Morning drive

Got moving before daybreak which is always nice. Especially when it does not include pain waking me up. And being it’s my favorite season its a pleasure to head out early and put the top down. Had to dry it off first because of the dew early today.

Being a holiday morning few were out and about which was also nice. I love the quiet of mornings except for a little nature here and there.

Over the hills at the Howard County Conservancy. Photo by Mike Hartley

This area is still as beautiful as it once was. It’s just so busy you can’t stop to enjoy much of it except for at odd times. Daybreak and before are really it. How many times can you just stop your car in the street and grab a frame or two? NEVER. Unless you’re nocturnal like me.

Sometimes I have to check which way is up. Photo by Mike Hartley

This virus continues to turn our world upside down. As I saw the sun coming up over Mt Hebron HS I thought would this empty parking lot still be the same in September? This really is a no-win situation. If I were a parent of a young child I’d be very hesitant to send them off to school. On the other hand, if they are not in school how can we go to work? And maybe the worst part is we are still going to be determining these things on the fly and differently in different areas.

Sunrise over Mt Hebron HS this morning. Photo by Mike Hartley

Actually I’m the parent of two teachers which has led to having to worry about the situation like I had my own children still of school age because they are with those kids of school age all day long. It’s of course about the safety of children. But we also have to think about the teachers just as much. Not all of them are young. I have no idea how this is going to happen. But instead of discussing if bars, nightclubs or beaches are going to be open, we should be coming up with some possible solutions to kid’s education because if they aren’t in school two bad things happen. Parents might lose jobs. Kids might be left alone. The economy will suffer.

Everyone enjoys the 4th. Photo by Mike Hartley

Well, the dog days of summer are upon us. Isn’t life grand? I’m going to have to schedule some more long weekends this summer. I love being off during the summer months. I can hear that day trip to some Maryland destination calling me.

EC was pretty quiet this morning. A few bike riders and some walkers. Must have been shift change at the police station because 3 of them followed me to the office complex at the top of the hill.

So I hope everyone enjoys their 4th of July and stays safe.

Recoup

What a beautiful Friday and Saturday. Actually got a little more sun than I intended. I should have just used some sunscreen but it was so pleasant I didn’t feel the burn till today. Luckily its nothing serious. But that sun those two days did revive me a bit. A ride in the car with my better half for a few hours did us both good.

We toured the rural part of the county out by Clarksville and Brighton Dam and then drove through Rocky George, Fulton, Ellicott City, and Catonsville. A short window visit with my father and mother inlaw also felt good to do. I’ve always been fairly good at appreciating the small things in life. I think that makes getting through these times easier.

It was good to see everyone keeping a distance and masked up in EC. The only thing that was bunched up was the traffic through town.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I really enjoyed that series on Jordan and the Bulls.
  • I scheduled a few days off in the coming weeks and I’m really looking forward to it.
  • I’ll be glad if the weather forecast is off for the next 6 days because all I see is clouds and rain.
  • A few burgers from the grill today have me grinning.

Good morning HC

I finally got my behind in gear and got out early today. I should have been out yesterday for the nice sunrise because clouds were the scene this morning. That was OK though, it felt great to be out and warm enough for shorts and not having to put on sweats to start a day.

Morning in Woodstock. Photo by Mike Hartley

Of course, I wasn’t just out and about snapping a few images. I had to get some gas for the mower which is being fired up today. And that leads me to my next comment. I almost never go to the Waverly Shell because they RAPE you on price but I will fill the gas can there because it’s the closest. Well, they weren’t open shortly after 6 am so I had to go to Rt 40 and St Johns Lane where the price per gallon is 30 cents cheaper than Waverly. And that the St Johns station isn’t the cheapest around either. It did cement one thing in the future for me. I’ll never even fill the can there again just out of principal.

The early bird catches the fish. I guess he didn’t like his picture being taken because he had quite a snarl on his face this morning. The pond at the entrance to Waverly off Rt 99.

It used to be you could tell the day of the week by the traffic. Now every morning seems like Sunday morning.

The morning dew having trouble burning off without the sun.

Even though I have over an acre of land, I feel like I need more space between my new neighbors and myself. For the peace and quiet, we once had is shattered by roosters and geese. That’s ok though, I got some rock and roll for them today.

Nothing jumping here. Except for that snake, I saw slither away as I approached the water.

So my mission this summer is this. I’m going to try to get out and shoot a spot in this county every day. I think this will be possible because I just got the news from my employer that I’ll be working from home all summer.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Smile at someone you don’t know. Wave to someone you don’t know. Tell someone to have a nice day that you don’t know.
  • Figures when I get home the sun would finally emerge from the clouds.
  • Like someone recently said – VOTE.
  • It would be good to stop thinking a day ahead and more like months or years. There is more hope that way.

Finding fun in the sun

Well, cabin fever hit today so a quick ride in the convertible with my better half soaking up some rays was a nice treat. I put the old camera in the cab and away we went. We stuck to the back roads and a few neighborhoods we hadn’t traveled through before. And when I say neighborhoods in the west part of the county you are talking about big properties and little human contact chance.

Along Rt 99 in Howard County

Of course, our trip started along Route 99. A good road to lean into a few turns like the one above. By the way, that’s not camera distortion, that’s a curve. This one brought back memories when I had my motorcycle and the enjoyment of the back roads of the county gave me. If it wasn’t the expansive views it’s the sweeping turns that can add to that smile on your face.

It’s been a while since having the top down and I can tell you I thought about what’s going on when I went to pull the handle to retract it. Do I have to be scared of the air I breathe now? Well yes in some situations I guess.

Don’t fence nature in.

Many neighborhoods nestled in between expansive farmland. And by the way, I love the FARMLAND FOREVER Signs I see hanging by their entrances. I hope that never disappears from our county. So much has changed and been lost already I can barely cope with what little we have left.

Not a worry in this pasture today.

That ride changed my mood today for the better and I’m glad we got out of the house. Especially with the rains coming tomorrow. It’s hard to determine when to go out. We have been really good about staying in and having no contact with people and will continue to do so.

Today felt like living.

I also discovered today that given the season it’s impossible not to touch my face. Such is life. I’ll do my best but pollen is pollen and it will do what it does. At least I’ll have a mask to sneeze into. Wait, that’s not a good idea either.

Out here your voice had better carry when you say “hi neighbor”

I’m thankful my workweek ended a day early. I had a comp day left so I decided to get that out of the way. Not that I’m in any danger of not working but just needed a mental break. Just trying to get ready for the long haul.

This person had the biggest smile on their face when I blew image up. I’m glad they were enjoying the day also.

And yes I socially distanced in my car as I went by anyone. That is why there are two lanes. That was some ride today. I kind of let the car point itself. When I got people behind me I turned down another road. A slow cruise in the country. A day when driving was a complete and utter joy.

As you can probably tell from these I really never stopped the car to take any of these images. Guess convertibles are good for many things. Well, tomorrow the top stays up and I’m staying indoors to work on my studio setup. Once I get the junk out of the way.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hope our youth is watching who the brave ones are in this crisis. Not the ones wanting credit every day. The heroes are too busy doing the job. And when this is over support your medical professionals.
  • Feelings expressed even though FaceTime is incomplete when it comes to your close friends and family. But that and the video chats are still the best things around today.
  • I see the Governer designated our county (Howard) as a hot spot today. Yeah, we rock. Whoops, not a good thing.
  • Be safe, tell those you love that you love them. And if you feel like it, tell a stranger.

How much

When you hear the words how much, most people think of the monetary cost. Today when I wrote that title I was thinking of how much I can cram into this day. Not a bad thought being there are so many options and opportunities.

It’s not there yet, but the strength is returning to this town.

Well at the end of the day I can say I crammed a lot into one day. A mixture of work and enjoyment. After playing yard man we took a trip to the Ellicott City Main Street Music Festival for a few hours. We walked to the city and saw all 3 outdoor stages. The bands sounded pretty good and it was so good to see this city alive again. We had a quick bite to eat in town and then went for a cruise till dark.

The temps were hot, the music was cool.

I think I’ll make this an annual event to attend in the future. And I hope it continues to be a great success for the city. If the crowds on the street and in the shops and parking lots were any indication it was.

Packed sidewalks bring a smile to my face.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was very glad to see the youth of the world concerned and making their presence felt by voicing global climate issues/effects. Maybe they can inspire some adults.
  • Weather-wise it was a good week to be off of work.
  • I need to work on my patience.
  • Do you believe the nonsense and all the wasted time with that Storm Area 51 crap? Proof that a dumb ass idea or thought can go way too far.

Saturday stroll

Walked one of my favorite towns with a great friend today. Well, actually I walked Ellicott City before he got there and then we walked Oella. I felt good but put on an extra mile or two that my feet could have lived without. But surprisingly everything else felt great after the hike.

There are few things that I love more than summer mornings with temps in the 60’s and 70’s with a nice breeze to make life special.

Blue skies are a nice touch also and add a little red white and blue and we are cooking with juice.

I should thank my better half for allowing me a few hours to photograph and chat with a very old friend. It was a great conversation as it always is and one I hope to make more frequent. It’s good to get out and he is an avid walker. I hope I don’t hold him back to much. Maybe some more practice and I’ll be able to hold a better pace. I think I’ll get out on Sunday morning as well.

I do love old stone buildings. And this town has a few.

Beautiful Buildings in front of Lot B.

This structure above was our first office when we launched our own weekly newspaper. I enjoyed the short commute and being back in Ellicott City where I started my newspaper career. I believe its a legal and title group now that occupies it.

Always a hard-working town.

Ellicott City seems to be an example of what small business strength is all about. The risk of doing business in this town that’s been flooded a few times. The reliance of getting people out of big box stores and down to a neighborhood shop. The hard work and limited space they all deal with.

I could sit and watch the classic cars and bikes tool through town. I can walk and be greeted by total strangers and wished a good morning with almost every passing person. I can lean over the bridge and watch the families of ducks. You can see store windows done with style and thought.

You can peer into spaces between homes and businesses and see wonderful garden treats. You can find many talented artists inside stores and out on the streets.

At least I got out this day and worked at a craft I love. Sometimes I feel selfish about taking photos and working on this blog. But in a lot of ways, it makes me very happy and hopefully will continue to give me enjoyment in my senior years. And who knows, maybe others will find things they like.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Balance out thinking and doing then smile about the accomplishments.
  • I love getting pictures of my granddaughter on days I can’t be with her.
  • It seems the more I photograph and write the less time I have to read.
  • Having conversations about what we can do to improve this country is something all of us should be doing each day. Who knows, there might be a winning idea someplace.
  • My walking partner today was like a treadmill that had the incline set at the moutain level.

Be ready to pivot

Had to alter plans today. It’s always good to be ready to pivot. Don’t let a set schedule imply inflexibility. Everything is flexible. Well most everything. I’m finding the more flexible that I am, the happier I am. So today I adjusted plans a few times. Yeah I got less done than I hoped for but Sunday is a day of rest isn’t it?

Be ready to pivot.

Was just playing around shooting a few frames of my tripods and I might not get out to shoot that beautiful moon this evening so these will have to do for the day’s post. Maybe I’ll get the chance to shoot some in the morning.

But have a firm base to pivot from.

Just finished watching football. I’m not encouraged to even watch the Super Bowl this year. But I’ll probably pivot from that decision also.

Stormy Saturday – rise before the rain

Stormy Saturday – Well the forecast says so. But for me being out and about early in the day I’ve gotten a few shots and stayed dry. When I saw the possibility of 2-4 inches of rain I thought oh crap. They just opened Main Street. I wanted to ride down there anyway to just walk and maybe catch some early morning activity.

The sun struggled to come up this morning and did its best to fight through the clouds but it was a losing cause. But cruising with the top down is nice regardless. I stopped at the Snowball stand and the Howard County Conservancy for a shot or two.

As I headed to old Ellicott City for a morning stroll I discovered there was someone more tired than I was who planted this sign upside down at the entrance to Town and Country apartments. I wonder if they still call them Town and Country. Well that’s what they were several decades ago when some friends lived there.

Someones world is upside down this morning.

In the time it took to drive from Woodstock to EC the sun had vanished behind clouds. As I enter a town with my first drive down main street in months the flashing caution lights with the dark clouds were not a combination I was hoping for.

Not the skyline this city needs.

As I expected I found beauty and destruction. But more progress than I though possible actually. One of the things I’ve always liked about this town is the wildlife it has. No not the people. You can step out and look at a stream and see ducks, fish, blue heron and the occasional snake, fox or deer depending on the time of day you’re in town.

An early morning fisherman just under the bridge. These are some big birds.

There was an awful lot of this also.

This sign isn’t really needed. The town is evidence enough.

I wonder how many of these have come and gone.

I can’t imagine the pain of losing your work.

We liked eating here. So if your hungry or thirsty next weekend on the 28th, think about attending the EC Strong Festival.

Think about supporting the EC Strong Festival.

And give them.

And live by.

Words to live by.

Even in a town hit hard, there is beauty to be found.

Random Thoughts of the Day

I need to get to the range. You never know when that practice will come in handy.

Did something change with the crust at Ledo pizza? The last two I’ve had have been thicker and rather doughy. That thin and crispy is what I like. And I’ve seen this from two different shops.

Rain = Sleep

1pm Veterans Day parade in EC

Veterans Day parade in Ellicott City today at 1pm. Didn’t know till I drove down to take some early morning shots and saw the people setting up and banners. Wish I could get back down for it but some chores await me. Did get a lot of other shots which I’ll share later. Felt great taking a walk through the town. I need that kind of exercise every morning. And only one person is going to make that happen so I’ve got to find a mirror to keep me accountable.

Even though it’s a bit cool the town was hoping 4 hours before the parade. I love this town, I parked behind my old Newspaper building. Well the first one that I worked at in EC which was Stromberg Publications or as people know it “the Times Papers.” Lots of good memories there before Patuxent purchased it and moved to Columbia. But even better memories were made there so no complaints. But if given the choice of towns to work in, I’d pick EC.

Saturday signals

What a great day. Grand dog is visiting and getting a few chores done. Relaxing is one of them and that is going fairly well. Grabbed a shot below at the Pink Cabbage yesterday after a bite to eat next door. It reminded me of this weekend, a little caution on either side and full speed ahead in the middle. I was going to try to get up to the Fairgrounds but that is looking iffy. Probably just make a donation and skip the relay part.

Pick a bucket and roll with it.

I’m very glad we finally stopped by the Town Grill at Foster Country Store on Rt 144 and Triadelphia road. I think I’ll give it a shot for breakfast this week. I’ve been looking for a new place to stop in the morning. But anyway lunch was great and I love the service and small feel of the place. Plus is prompts me to take a ride down Triadelphia road, which is a nice cruise.

Yep and its good.

I love the back roads of Howard County. But its troubling to see every space continued to be filled. Speaking of that we went past Wallace Park the other day and lo and behold that beautiful field on the left that seemed to go on forever is being developed it appears. When will it stop? Anyway I’ll let you know how breakfast is here soon.

I’m counting on a day that the body is all on the same page.

Pushing myself to learn more than I did today, and each day.

Can you smell what Mother Nature is Cooking?

Thoughts to those who just need a positive one.

And that’s all she wrote for this post. Whoops, I guess that should technically read “That’s all he wrote for this post.”

Monday flashback

Ah the simple days of working on Main Street. Started in 1976 near the top of the hill at Stromberg Publishing (aka The Times papers).  Started dating my better half who lived up the road during those early years. Fell into a career I had no idea I was interested in. And now 41 years later it is decision that I’m glad I stuck with.

Mr Yates was a fine merchant. I patronized him often.

But I do miss working so close to home and in such a town that felt like family. Well lots of them were family at Stromberg. Hell if there were a policy on nepotism then over half the company would have been let go. But even if you weren’t blood family, you we’re part of the company family. I’m sorry that so many young people miss out on that feeling now.

I miss the nickel Popsicle’s from Mr. Yates store. I miss the feel of that small town. Especially being I commute to a large town (DC). And the company I work for doesn’t feel like family anymore. Then again that’s not a knock at it, most companies don’t have that feel. All I know is I miss the close relationships I once had at work.

I got to see my daughter on her birthday. Took her some flowers and a balloon. She is so precious. I’m so glad my children settled fairly close to home so I can still do these things.

Well, didn’t get a chance to shoot today but hope to this fine Tuesday that is almost upon us.

Take a minute

Wow, adding that 10 hour work day at the job that pays the bills back into the schedule really crimps my free time. Such is life. I did take a minute today to grab a frame at the Howard County Conservancy. And another from the entrance of the Conservancy looking up to Woodstock and the famous Snowball Stand.

Yep the stand is close for the winter. But we made it through January and I think we’re at least half way to spring so I’m starting to think about what flavor my first snowball of the season will be.

But I also took a minute to look at the sky today. Something I used to have time to do and enjoy as a youth often. Not so much now and I miss it. And I think I figured out why. You see as I’ve aged I’ve watched the generation before me age. And men seem to go through this morphing at a certain age.

All your life your standing at 90 degrees. At 50 you feel the sudden inertia behind you pushing you forward, sort of like a stiff wind at your back trying to fold you in half. At 60 you’re slouching forward at a 80 degree acute angle at least half the time and you didn’t even notice it till you see a photo. Yeah your neck still works fine and you can see the sky.

At 70 years of age your listing forward at 60 degree angle and even if your neck is still fully functional your only able to see about a 1/3 of the sky. Your starting to see more ceiling fan in the bathroom than clouds.

At 80 years of age you’re at a 45 degree angle forward and basically looking at the pavement and shoes. If someone speaks and you get your neck to move upwards you may be able to make eye contact but seeing their hairstyle is probably out of the question. That is why old men are always in trouble, their wives go to the salon and expect them to notice the new dew. Well they always miss it because they can’t see it.

At 90 you’re so bent over you’re looking at your own behind. The sky is a reflection in a puddle. That is why I don’t take puddle reflection photos now. I figure I’ll have time to do it when I’m older.

At 100 you’re going back to your youth. They have scooted your bed out to the porch so you can stare at the sky all day and night. Well I can dream of living to 100 years old.

A New Years eve dinner

What a great evening last night. A fun time and dinner with a couple of our best friends. But I have to comment on a business that closed its doors last night in Howard County. I’ve always liked their entrance. It says “Love, Laughter and Friends. Always Welcome Here.” So it’s with a heavy heart that I see another HoCo business close. Baltimore Sun article about it here.

This establishment, Luna Bella is no more. It’s located very close to one of my best friends homes and its a restaurant we have patronized for some time. Both dine in and carry out. Great food and great service, gone from the community.

Goodbye growing season

Almost time for that dormant winter season. Not that I’m any expert on growing anything but given the season in the northeast its pretty much planning for next year I’m guessing. Of course these guys could really answer all those and more questions at the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Central Maryland Research Branch along Folly Quarter Road.

I love traveling that road. Well the bike riders who like it complicate it at times and people not paying attention but its a much better ride than Route 29 if you got the time and want to see some country. This U of MD site along that road is well maintained and I’m always looking at what they are growing and how well it’s doing.

But this looks like the final cutting of the year so I’ll just look forward to spring and the coming of the Green Again. In the mean time I had better get out and try to capture some of the fall colors. Were going to be subjected to that grey of winter all too soon.

Sweet Saturday Mornings

Nothing like getting up early and quick walk. Also got a haircut which always makes me feel better. Saw this scene on the way home from that task. It seems like the winds have taken a lot of the color away here in central Maryland. I’ll have to see if I can still find some later. Been marveling at all the wonderful images that other photos that I follow have caught. Some amazing shots of fall.

I’m really going to start pushing myself this coming year to work on my many crafts and finally get proficient with the tools, learning to edit both words and images better, and put some design into this blog. I still waste too much time on unimportant things. And while I’d love to invest the time and money into Photoshop, I think I’ll first get better at composing and capturing the best images I can. Plus I enjoy getting out more behind the camera than I do sitting at my desk.

I also find that if I’m happy with a days shooting the words and stories come more easily because the images usually inspire some kind of drivel from me for good or bad. Hoping I can get out and shoot some more between the days task and do a few post.

Someday again

Found a few shots of Ellicott City from this year before the flood that I hadn’t posted yet. Longing for the days the town returns to the unique visit it was. Special restaurants, shops businesses and residents. My home away from home. Where I started my career in the newspaper business. Where my wife grew up. Where I got married. Where I returned to as a partner/publisher on our own newspaper. Where I go for a good walk. Where I go to photograph. Where I go to eat.

Time to pump it up

What a beautiful day for mid October here in the northeast U.S. Spent a few hours cruising northern Howard County and then a walk around Ellicott City. Felt great to get some exercise and feel that warmth of the sun. I’m both excited to see so much is done in such a short time. It really is amazing. But I’m disheartened with distance so far to go for many owners and businesses. This one was a sea change for our town. I’m going to try to do my part to help it return to glory again.

I miss the days of endless farms throughout the county. Yes its still a beautiful area but already over developed in most part of the county now. I guess it’s the price for having such a good area and services. No wonder everyone wants to move here.

Nothing like getting outside and taking a walk. Did it today and hope to do it tomorrow. Of course the Saturday walk won’t be with my better half which won’t make it as fun but I’ll power through. Did the loop around Lake Kittamaqundi and captured a few shots. Should have done many more miles, but wasn’t feeling 100% today and it was a lot hotter than I anticipated.

Thinking ahead

So cooler temps are on the way. I’m just hoping the sun makes an appearance for most of the weekend. I feel like getting out and walking a few miles for the exercise each day and to see what I can find in my viewfinder. Lots of plans and a short time to do them in but, whats new there.

But those storms last night are not encouraging. Good thing they were fast movers. Speaking of fast movers, I saw an old Cobra while cruising last Sunday morning. Those are nice cars, never driven one but with that small weight and monster power plant its got to be entertaining.

Well, here is hoping I can come up with some entertaining work in the next few days. I’ve gotten a bit sloppy lately. My goal in August was to post every day. Well I missed 4 which was better than the 5 I missed in July but what the hell, its improvement. As far as the quality well that is always a subjective thing, but I’m going to try to make a marked improvement in that area also.

But its time to set my goals a bit higher. Maybe 2 post a day and each with its own sections. Sort of like a morning/evening edition. Its project time and I hope to kick off September with my review of BBQ in the area. I’ll be starting a series of the Eastern shore of Maryland. I’d like to take a few days at Arlington National Cemetery this month also. Mom’s birthday is coming up so I have to take her some flowers to her and Dad. I’m also going to try my hand at some more night shooting. I was video taping some lightening last night and might try my hand at more video work. I do have to learn the editing part more. Got a million other ideas and thoughts so I better get to work.

  • randomthoughtsYou know if I retire at 65 I only have a bit over 1500 days of work left. When I look at it that way, it evokes a smile.
  • Why do I waste time listening to a 5 or 7 day forecast when the batting average of the forecast even 24 hours out is shaky.
  • You got to love happy hours. No matter where they are or who you’re with.
  • Attitude is everything. And mine is improving so there is room for hope.

Riding with the Heroes

Was lucky to catch the Motorcycle ride pulling out onto Rt 99 heading towards Rt 32 this morning in Howard County. I got on a hill by Marriots Ridge school and shot the procession. The Riding with the Heroes run Sponsored by Howard County Police and Howard County Fire and Rescue. This was the 2nd one and it looked like a success to me and the route it takes is something I’m going to try in the car soon. Of course with the Top Down.

A good reason to rise early

Nothing like early mornings. Then again I seem to love every part of the day and night. Doesn’t bode well for my sleep patterns but I do get a lot of perspectives. Sometimes the morning air is so clear and crisp. This time of year is great to enjoy our outdoors. And with the National Park Service celebrating their 100th year it is another good reminder to go see a lot of what makes this country great.

A lazy morning

Did some shooting this morning. Actually did more driving than shooting. Which was fine because it was a beautiful morning indeed. And being the driving wasn’t towards any city of any size like it normally is, the roads I chose were great and scenes were very nice. Sometimes as I’m driving looking for new shooting spots, I find myself enjoying the view too much and forgetting to stop and shoot it. Such was the case this morning after I caught myself saying I should have stopped there and grabbed a few frames for the 5th time.

But that is the good thing about shooting locally. You can go back and back with ease. And each time you do you see something different or new if you got your eyes open. That is a gift I think I’ve gotten back from trying my hand at photography. I stop and pause to look at things a bit more. Composition, color, contrast, texture, angles, feelings and all kind of things.

So I’ll have to go back out and take another stab at some shots today while we have sun because Sunday looks like it might not be so good. Plus time gets tight after this evening anyway.

Found a gem

Found this photo below of Main Street Ellicott City from Saturday morning 7/30 before the flood that evening and thought it was a good thing to look at and hope for the future of this wonderful place. I’ve spent a fair amount of time in this town. From working there a few years at 2 newspapers to eating, shopping and just walking in. And thankfully many wonderful photo ops along the journey. My wife and family lived right up the street. We got married in this town.

I’m going to miss this landmark for a while I believe. I’ll miss the people and meals and exercise and great images it provides. Not the ones I’ve seen first hand and shared recently after the flood, but ones that show the great town it is.

Its funny, I had no idea that this image would be the last I took of the town before this disaster. To have snapped it that morning is special to me. I never get tired of trying to capture a new angle on this place. And while this image Saturday morning wasn’t anything special, it reminds me how each moment is special in life. And how any minute it can change in a flash. So here’s to rebuilding this wonderful small town of America.

Saturday morning 7/30/2016. I was just returning from a ride down New Cut Road and had just made the turn next to the Phonenix Resturant onto Main Street. Had the top down so just held up the old Kodak and snapped this. Photo by Mike Hartley

Limited access but a few good frames

Went down to Ellicott City this morning and police had just about every angle blocked off but I did manage to wander around and snap some 80 images of flood damage. Nothing much downtown Main street except for a few shots from Church Street. I heard they were doing a press walk through and I probably could have faked my way into that but decided to hike up the street a bit where the cameras weren’t but there was still damage.

Reflecting on Ellicott City

As I walked around town taking flood pictures this morning I was able to capture this reflection in a window of the old firehouse top and it made me think about all the good images I have of Ellicott City in both my mind and on film. A good friend said this could be worse than Agnes in the early 70’s. So I’m going to start this day with a nice image of the town because what little I saw broke my heart.

Wheel me up Scotty

Just a random shot down in Ellicott City this morning. Clouds made the morning less than optimal but it was nice to be out tooling around the county. Took a drive down College Avenue and I couldn’t believe how much it had built up. Every time I take a trip down a road I traveled long ago all I see is new development. Well, that at least answers the question of “where did all these people come from?”

  • randomthoughtsThe more I get out and shoot, the more I want to get out and shoot. Pictures that is. In today’s world that is worth clarifying.
  • My new goal is to shoot 100 frames a day. Easier said than done.
  • Being older it is still hard to click away with total abandon. When you have shot so much film, you trigger finger is still conservative.
  • My wife better get home soon. Were almost out of Coke. And we all know that this guy does not shop.

Morning sunning

Found this boy floating just under the surface at Scott’s Cove. Well he did poke his head through the surface when I snapped. While he looks small he’s actually at least a foot and a half. He was out in the middle of the reservoir and I used all the zoom I had 300mm without a tripod. I’m going to spend some time down in this area trying to capture a bit more nature.

I’m also going to have to set up and watch some fisherman and see if I can capture that moment of action. Now that can take patience and I’m hope I’m capable of that. It’s not one of my best traits. Smoking Saturday

Got together with some friends and started the day off with laughter. What a great way to begin the day. A warm one out there and I got a bit too much sun with the top down. Combined with yesterdays ride I’m toast. But its good to be out and about. For I think back about a year ago and I wasn’t doing anything or going anywhere. I was just thankful to be out of the hospital.

That is one of the things I try to think of when I start feeling down because of the small stuff. How good it felt to walk out of UMMC and get in that car and go down Russell street to go HOME.

I got so busy this afternoon I didn’t get out to see if they are serving jerk chicken at the Fairgrounds for the Jamaican Fest. And just a reminder about the upcoming county fair in August. I hope the family will want to go together again. So many fond memories of the fair. Both working at it for the Howard County Times papers with great friends and attending with family and friends.

Its nothing special, just a county fair like a gazillion others. They always have done a nice job on improving it every year. I’m really going to try to get up there and get some good shots this year. One eventual goal is to go every day and try to put together a project of it but that is grandiose thinking for sure.

So its off to get some more images this evening. First a plan. Nah, not my normal operating mode. I’m more a go out and see what strikes me. But if I’m going to be effective, I have to start planning and putting more complete works up.

That goes for both my writing and photography. So I’m going to begin with making the post more organized by section so with all the different things I might ramble on about can at least catch some of the people who might not be interested in my whole rant but might like a food review or my random thoughts.

Also going to try to enhance the design a bit. Maybe start to incorporate some graphics to break up the grey and photos. Hell I’ve worked for hundreds of designers over the years so I should have picked up a few things. But I have a tendency to go overboard when simpler is better. That is why I picked this simple theme.

I know one goal of posting each day is becoming reality. Like that little train to my left. Just need to keep up the pace and prepare some things in advance to post when I’m busy. I’m discovering there is a lot of time needed in creating good content. Well at least it is for me. And obviously by the lack of that here, you can see time is sparse to say the least. But I’m working at it more and loving it more.

And thankfully the more time I get to work on it the more I think of to do. That is a blessing I guess because at times before starting this I thought I’d have enough to write about for maybe two days.

What is transported through your back yard

Exactly one mile down the road is a rail line that is used fairly often. I’m sure there are some dangerous cars in the middle of some of those trains. It’s funny as you grow older your thoughts change. The only things I thought of when I saw trains when I was younger were marveling at the sheer size and sounds from the engines. The graffiti on the cars. The cargo and how many cars were on that train.

Now I think about safety or terrorism and our rail system. Or how many cars contain oil or other toxic or explosive or both are going by us each day. I might have to go do some recording and research on that just for my own curiosity.

I need to get back to that kid mentality. Life is a lot more fun that way. Think I’ll walk the train path and try some photos along that beautiful stretch of land in northern Howard County. I also need to get to some areas down by where I grew up in the southern part of the county.

I hear Savage has grown. Been a long time in visiting that neck of the county. Also Rocky Gorge.

Actually that is an excuse to get some exercise which I need. I’ve been getting lazy again and its time for a change. Another incentive is one of my brothers slimming down to the point where % of body fat might be swinging my direction. Of course we still have one friend who I think owns that title of most out of shape.

So out I will go early this weekend each day for some exercise and shooting. Sounds like a good plan.

And speaking of behaving and thinking like a kid. It was a great day tooling around with the top down on the car. Yeah a little hot but what the hell. I love summer and sunshine. Drove out to the Lisbon/Woodbine area and some of those back roads.

Hay Bail me out

You can always go back to the farm to get bailed out. This was up by the fairgrounds which will be buzzing with the annual fair in another month. Can’t wait to shoot that event this year.  Also noticed while I was out riding around that a lot of that storm damages remains.

Bee all you can be

A warm one out there yesterday afternoon. I love it though and so did this bee. And the line at Rita’s confirms the temps in the 80’s. This has and always will be my favorite season. I can lay in my hammock, not wear shoes and a host of other benefits. Just the sun on my skin feels to energize me. So as I see the coming up this morning I think I’ll head outside.

I should have purchased a Rita’s franchise long ago. Those things seem to be a hit but are seasonal. They need to find something to sell during the winter months though.

Yesterday I was so inspired but the body and mind had nothing left after chores. Yes I did get out for a few minutes of shooting but nothing substantial. I hope today is better but it already looks pretty full. So I think I’ll run out this morning and grab a few frames before a 10am appointment.

You know holiday weekends just aren’t as important when you work them. But such is life. At least I’ll know I’ll appreciate them more when I retire someday. The first one or two that you work and get that double time pay its nice but I can tell you it’s not worth it at all.

Doing your own thing

Despite common sense and signs (right above the riders head) saying  “WALK your bicycles, skateboards and play vehicles on SIDEWALK” this guy is starting to ride up the winding, narrow street at 2mph blocking the normal flow of traffic. I have nothing against riding a bike in this area. It is full of wonderful places and streets to ride. But we need to work together and this isn’t it.

Hitting the ground running

I’m coming back to earth after a wonderful weekend where my Son got married. A wonderful time it was. Everything went perfect. And joy and happiness abounded from both family and friends. Another great reward of being a father. And I learned a very important lesson, you can dance but there is a price. But I’m still glad I did dance. And anyone who has photos or video of said father making a fool of himself, I would like to purchase original copies. I’m sorry I missed saying a happy fathers day to all the Dad’s yesterday.

Around the county in the AM

Took a drive and a walk. Felt good to get some exercise and grab a few shots along the way. Spotted a few things I’m going back to shoot on Saturday morning. Nice to be able to get out and not need an umbrella. Hope I can shoot more later in the day. I’m learning about this new lens and I like it so far. I hope to get to love it.

Mall

Had some errands to run at the Columbia Mall yesterday. The Tailor shop for me and my better half had a few returns and wanted to get her eyebrows done. So given we were going to have baggage I only took my old camera along. I’m surprised that thing works so well still. I believe its 8 years old and still kicking.

I must get out more, when did the radical hair colors become stylish again? And when she turned I saw she also had matching blue lips. Very radical, I guess my generation was just the long hair.

While it’s too late for this gentlemen below to be saved, I thought I’d send the warning out that it’s not only unsafe at the shore but at your local Mall. Beware of man-eating signs. He looks a bit like the character Quint in Jaws and his line “This shark, swallow you whole.”

  • Well, much to do and little time for it all. Till the next Post.

Torture to fond memories

Each day now as I drive to work, I look at the building I called home for almost the last two decades, being torn down piece by piece. This is a big complex of buildings in DC that used to be home to The Washington Post. Now its quickly becoming a pile of rubble. Don’t get me wrong, the new home of The Washington Post is beautiful, wonderful, temperature controlled and without rats and roaches so far. Really nice digs in other words.

But that doesn’t make it easier. For some reason I am compelled to stop, watch and think. But as I watch it I feel like a part of myself and others are being lost. Life experiences are somehow changed when the physical environment that they happened in no longer exist.

I can go back to the building in Howard County on 8307 Main Street Ellicott City where I started my career in 76 for Stromberg Publications and stand there and think about hearing the noise of the press spinning up or seeing people running about, the smell of chemicals from the engraving room. Looking through a hole in the concrete floor and seeing the Tiber run under the building.

My first job in newspapers fresh out of high school. I was hooked. I was in love with what we did and who I did it with. I have friends still from that first experience. That place gave me a confidence in myself I didn’t have before. I had an opportunity and I stepped up. And its been a great ride from then on.

I can go to Columbia at 10750 Little Patuxent Parkway and see the old Flier Building that I spent 17 years in. So many fond memories just driving by the place sometimes. So many great friendships, accomplishments and growth. Possibly the greatest and most chaotic time in my life. I wish I had appreciated it more while I was there because there were some wonderful things done by some wonderful people.

I can go to the bottom of Main Street in Ellicott City and see and stand in the building where two wonderful partners and myself started a newspaper from scratch. Talk about your life experiences. Wow what a wonderful and also stressful time. Learned a ton about myself that I didn’t know before, with that experience.

But now my home of the last 18 years on 15th street is disappearing before my eyes. A strange feeling indeed. Sometimes I’m sitting on the street trying to figure out whose office now has a floor to ceiling window view that didn’t before. Sometimes I’m in awe of the machines effectiveness in ripping a structure like that to the ground.

Sometimes I think back to events on the exterior of the building. The Limos picking up some old friends retiring after many decades of service who retired together and celebrated on the way out. Talking to the gals and guys outside the L Street Employee and delivery access door while they finished off their cigarettes. I quit smoking there 17 years ago. But there was always some good conversations outside the walls there.

I remember the motorcades and guys in suits/sunglasses and hardware (guns) escorting dignitaries or government officials in and out of the offices. And I’m guess with the occasional sniper team on the roofs of adjoining buildings for the leaders of state/countries. I’m pretty sure I spied one once or twice.

Then there was the anthrax threat with white powder being sent to Editorial. Guys in space suits in the Building checking for contamination. The day and days after the election where people lined up around the block to get extra copies of the paper.

Sad days where the presses on 15th street were stopped and removed. Wonderful days where journalist won many Pulitzer prizes. Great days where my teams were involved in keeping that paper publishing every day without exception and only by remarkable effort did it happen. And all the way to current times where its a 24/7 operation.

The glass on the windows out of the cafeteria were shattered the other day. I spent a number of breakfast, lunches and dinners looking out those very windows. I saw a chair that we probably sat in crushed but the laughter was still coming from it. I’m surprised they actually need to spray the building for dust as they tear it down. There were so many floods in that place I’m surprised it isn’t waterlogged. But again my mind wanders.

Think about all the famous people you have seen coming and going from this place. I Remember the time I walked out the L Street door and was met with secret service guys almost immediately because they had the street sealed off for the President coming into the Capital Hilton service entrance across the street.

The day and night of September 11th. Watching the city evacuate with sidewalks and streets clogged and an hour later the place being a ghost town and just Hummers with men with automatic weapons around. Very surreal image of DC that sticks with me today.

An elevator ride with Ben Bradley, and he spoke to me. And always amazed at how many people Don Graham knew by name. And then there is the symbol of what I held dear as a sign of my industry. The Linotype machine that was at the front entrance on 15th street. A symbol of strength and the power of words on paper. A symbol of a time when newspapers were the main tool in communication in a democracy.

Wow, a growing pile of rubble. This is a new experience for me. At first when I saw it begin, it was a nasty feeling that just hit me wrong to the core. And as the days progressed the emotions expressed above rolled along. Now I’m thinking about what is important about memories and becoming at peace as the demolition continues.

I look at all the wonderful relationships that I had and continue to have from that time there. I think about the gut splitting laughter at times I thought would never end. I think about accomplishments done with others over the years. I think about the loss of some people while there. I reflect on the special opportunity that my first boss gave me there and will ever be in her debt for it.

It was my first BIG company. My first experience with bureaucracy.  My first experience with such a diverse set of personalities and egos. My first experience of the pressures of a daily product vs a number of weekly ones. The pressures of being right all the time because everything was critical. But it’s always been exciting and I wouldn’t trade it or the people who are important to me that I’ve met through there for anything else.

For it’s a leader in the industry and draws awe from others. Then again if it’s a person who read an article that the paper published who they seriously disagree with, then it draws ire. Either way its interesting working for an organization that is recognized as it is. In some ways it is amazing. Some of the best teams of people at any newspaper.

But you know, I had the same feeling when I worked at a lot of local papers. Great teams of people with the same dedication, drive and desire to produce the best story, photo, ad each time. To print it beautifully and to get it there on time regardless of mother nature. These institutions are special. They were and are part of the fabric of our nation. Communication, understanding, argument, debate, resolution. From nations leaders to the little league baseball organizations. From photographers on the front lines in wars to here at home covering floods, tornadoes and other disasters or terrors.

100_7520

I’m so proud to have had a career in newspapers. I think it would have made my parents proud. I think it’s an honest profession. And that is why it bothers me so to watch a physical symbol go as it is. But just as time has changed the newspaper industry. It will change for the current hot digital organizations also. But if you noticed that the journalism leaders before are still at the top of the digital charts also because content is always king.

Quality writing, images and video will always be important as well as being delivered consistently and on time. I just hope the future generation does it with dignity, honest/truthfulness and objectivity that past veterans have. For if they do they will have a place in the publishing world for a long time.

I’ve been working on this off and on for a few weeks coming back and adding or changing a line. Well the old buildings are gone as of about a week ago. So here is to hoping the new building on 13th and K and the new people inside the new one (along with a few old timers) can form many happy memories and experiences also. But the old ones will be hard to top.

Relaxing Saturday night

I have to start this off with the fine meal we had a Portalli’s this evening in Ellicott City. It was excellent company, with great food in a wonderful environment close to home. We sat downstairs for the first time for dinner. I found this very comfortable and might asked to be seated down there in the future. I found it a bit easier to talk. But I did like the piano music last time we were upstairs. Well give and take and just alternate. Or go with the mood in the future I guess.

Anyway service was grand. We did have to wait for a valet for a short bit but I think he was the only one working so its hard to be in two places at once. Regardless he was very nice and we were seated quickly with the exception of waiting for someone to take a family photo at dinner. No problem at all. Our waitress (I’m very sorry I didn’t catch her name) was very good. I though her timing was perfect. I didn’t feel rushed. She was there confirming all was well several times (after each course), cleaned up any dishes promptly and most of the time without interrupting the flow of our multiple conversations.

I didn’t have to ask for a thing all evening. Drinks and refills were always there. New silver between appetizers and main entrees. A steak knife for yours truly. Plates for our appetizers. Waters refilled. Crumbs cleaned from the linens. Everything went well. You know a waiter/waitress has to have a good sense of timing and people. And when you have multiple people finishing it can’t be perfect for everyone but tonight was about the best table service I’ve had in a good while.

And a tip of the hat to the Chef. The Baked Oysters were the best I’ve had in some time. The cold seafood appetizer we also shared (a special of the day) was very good also. The melting butter candle was unique and good. My three dinner mates all had salads. They seemed to be very happy with them. I think they were the Portalli’s salad. Sorry, I’m not a salad person, but I have had their Caesar before and that was great.

Instead of going with my favorite Seafood Carbonaro, I decided to go for the Filet Minion with friend eggplant as a side. The steak was ordered medium. It was perfectly cooked and had some nice seasoning. Very tender. My better half had the Surf & Turf Rigatoni. Our friends had the Cioppino Over Pappardelle and the Prosciutto-Wrapped Cod.

Everyone was very pleased and it was a great meal and conversation. It was a great way and place to spend a Saturday evening. It also was another great reminder to take every opportunity possible to get together with friends. I love my wife dearly and enjoy her company very much. But it’s also nice to have friends to socialize with. For both of us and anyone really its a healthy thing to have and do often.

And I say often because the more you do with friends, the stronger those relationships are. The more fun is had and the quality of life for everyone is improve. Thanks for the great company last night C&J.

A simple lunch, a simple bloom and a wonderful weekend

This week I was able to make some time to have lunch with my Daughter. What a wonderful thing to have some time with your children when they are grown. So much more of life to share. You do most of your child raising before they leave the nest but I’m realizing you never stop mentoring your kids.

And they never stop helping shape you as a parent. For that day, I was able to hear something in a way from her that made a lot of sense and it changed my approach to something and therefore improved and maybe even elongated my life. And in my rambling on through a nice lunch at Bare Bones in St John’s Plaza, I hope she picked up on some words of wisdom.

Life is precious, helping someone enjoy and get the most out of it is something we all should be helping each other do. Because I’m starting to learn, what you do for others comes back to help you out even more. Hey, I never said I was a fast learner. I’ve made a lot of mistakes to get to this point.

Exercising my menu selections. I’ve been slowly trying new dishes when I go out to eat. I love a great meal. So I decided to veer from my traditional favorites at China Taste in Enchanted Forest and made a selection from the Thai section. The Thai shrimp fried rice with pineapple and cashews. It was great. Loved it and now I have another favorite. Variety is the spice of life they say.

OK, I believe Ernesto’s in Enchanted Forest, may be challenging El Azteca in Clarksville, as my favorite south of the border fiesta. Well they have the advantage of being closer also. But the food is very good. Burritos Grande is a meal and a half. Very good. Yes its a chain and I believe in supporting my local businesses and certainly will visit El Azteca again.

This week my passion to learn returned again. This week I spent a lot of time worrying about a good friend and spent time letting them know it. This week my love for my better half grew. This week I didn’t let pain stop me all the time. This week I saw my best friends. This week I got excited about baseball season starting again. And also the championship of college basketball season. This week I realized I need to get busy creating something worthwhile. Make that many worthwhile things. This week is almost over. I’m looking forward to this coming week and seeing my children and friends and finding love each day. And remembering as my daughter taught me to not blow my horn or yell at all the people on the road that can’t drive.

Random Thoughts for Sunday April 3rd 2016

  • It’s not like I stop having random thoughts on days I don’t post. I just miss writing them down.
  • Looking forward to driving a real machine again.
  • If you watch TV you learn there is a pill for everything that ails you. If you listen closely though there are far more serious effects from taking those drugs.
  • I have to start testing myself more physically again. And spring and outdoor yard home chores and other sports should keep me active.
  • A new week begins again, what a wonderful thought, even if it does begin with work.

Intersections

Was going through some slides from my parents and came across some shots of an intersection that I’ve probably gone through a gazillion times. Route 29 and Gorman/John Hopkins road. When we first moved to Howard County in 1961, Rt 29 was a single lane road each way with no shoulder for good stretches. Most intersections were stop signs.

I remember Dad and Mom stopping at this point and taking these shots of our new neighborhood signs and the Southern States store across the road, along with many more shots around the neighborhood. And yes that is the family powder blue 57 Chevy. Also notice the two Postal Employees installing a mailbox on the corner that day. You can see their truck on the other side of the road behind our car.

Crossing Rt 29 used to be almost a daily pastime on summer days. Gather enough change to walk up to the Southern States store and stand in front of this wonderful soda machine with a big glass door. The sodas were lined up on the right side and a thin vertical door would open when you paid for them. Nehi Grape, Root Beer and refreshing Orange. RC Cola’s and YooHoo’s. Never liked the YooHoo’s. And eventually I believe a Coke machine. But then our parents didn’t like us crossing Rt 29, even though it was a single lane each way road with little traffic.

So we used to collect bottles along the road and take them to Scaggsville Market at Rt 216 and 29 and turn them in for penny’s and nickels to get more treats. Boy life was simple at that age. Woods where we would build forts and new homes to wander through as they were being built. Most people never even locked their doors. And if you did I’m sure several of your neighbors had keys.

I still have many friends from growing up in this neighborhood. Many wonderful memories of fun, games, playing every sport known to man and some we would make up,  late night antics as we grew into our young teens. But just like us it has aged. In most spots well but in some time has taken its toll.

Which brings me to present day. For even though we sold our family home in 2007, if my memory is correct, I’m blessed with having a best friend who brought a home in the same neighborhood about 30 years ago. So I’m still going though the same old intersections on a frequent basis. I pass it twice a day still on work days. It’s a six lane highway today that still gets clogged. You wouldn’t dare run across it even if you can run a 4.5  4o yard dash. And while much has changed, much remains the same.

All I know is that there is a strange comfort passing this spot frequently. I guess because it has been such a fine memory.

So as these guys finish installing that mailbox, I’ll finish rambling on about my youth for the moment. But it does make me glad I took the time to look through some old slides and share some of Howard County in 1961 or 62. Not positive which year on these, but it is one of the two.

A neighbors tree

Soon the trees will bloom as this one did across the street from me last year. The flowers are already poking through the ground. And let the sneezing begin. No problem though. I’m all about the warm temps. Yeah it means lots of outside labor but it also means outside sports and shorts. So bring it all on. If I can just make it through that cool breeze and lower than average temps today.

The front porch

Sunrises and sunsets are one of my life’s addictions. One of my healthier ones. I’ll never get enough of them. I try to pause, think, reflect, relax and use them to appreciate that which has come my way. This transition time when the sun is stronger, warmer and contrasted still against the bare trees is a nice time of year.

Soon leaves will fill the space across the street. But somehow these views are still beautiful all year-long from my front porch. I certainly haven’t taken full advantage of that position. When I do there is an utter relaxation and peace that has been one of the many moments in this home that I had envisioned before we came here.

My better half and I have always admired homes with front or even wrap around porches. Ones with swings maybe or a wood cut banister. Maybe a few old style wooden rockers. Anyway I digress, we have a small and quaint porch and it has two fairly comfortable outdoor chairs with a table between them.

But its our porch and it gives me strength. I’ve sat on it and watched my children come and go. I’ve sat there after mowing the yard for 3-4 hours on a HOT summer day and caught my wind. And I’ve always been able to bolt off the porch with a burst of renewed energy. I’ve rested there on FREEZING days after shoveling my driveway for hours. I’ve listened to music on the old Walkman and lost myself in the tunes on a fall evening. I’ve stood there and watched huge thunderstorms roll over with lightning displays. I wave goodbye to my better half as she leaves for work as she does for me.

It’s a small section of concrete with some white pillars and a few chairs with cushions surrounded by a small garden area and a dogwood tree. And its been mine for almost the last three decades and it is one of the many views I have from my home that I’m in love with. But really I’m just in love with the many memories it has given me that are movies in my mind I can draw from when needed.

Especially that one where it’s that hot summer day and I’ve been working outside an my better half comes home with the big cherry snowball and I get to sit there and try unsuccessfully not to get brain freeze. Then again stringing the Christmas lights up each winter is also one that I like to. Oh yeah the sounds of the wind chimes. Or watching the bee’s go from flower to flower or the squirrels sprinting from the two oak trees in my front yard.

Then there is the many memories of my pet waiting for me at the door as I step up to the porch. And many others that I think about it now. I hope you have a front porch in your life.

You can’t beat weather like this. So crank up them engines and let the good times roll. I shot this maybe 4 decades ago on my best friends dock, on St Leonard creek. I have spent many a day with them and greatly enjoyed their family sharing that bay lifestyle with me.  Boating, swimming, crabbing, fishing. And rumors of some huge fun fest that I have no knowledge of.

Howard County Food

Had a wonderful dinner at Ernesto’s in Enchanted Forrest recently with my better half. The place really hops and I’m glad to see it doing well because I like having a good Mexican restaurant close by to home. Would recommend it highly. Had a great server also. I think his name was Louis.

Also stopped by Shannon’s a few weeks ago and had a wonderful dinner. That place never disappoints and its great service compliments the fine food.

And while I can’t wait till Mission BBQ opens to try that because I love BBQ, I won’t go without saying that Canopy has been a mainstay in this county for ages and I still am very pleased with the quality of their products.

A look to my left and some more around the county

Looking over this area the last 30 years gives me a calm from the madness. As soon as I pull out of my neighborhood I get this view to my left. I should have been taking a photo of this view every day of the year as I did this morning. It’s a beautiful view. It changes often with the field in the foreground. There is often wildlife out there. There is sometimes work being done on the field. There are people sitting at the snowball stand where I shot this from cooling off from the hot summer sun looking over this view.

I love this view. I always spend a lot of time looking that direction and holding that image as I think about the drive I take to DC for work. I try to hold the calm it provides. Not always successful in that but I try. I think I’ll do more with this angle over the year. That’s if this old guy writes it down so I don’t forget.

You know I used to think that stating goals out loud helped me keep to them. Well the truth is that doesn’t work. Doing something each day does. A fact I keep forgetting and letting inaction become my action. I thought about this in working on this blog. I didn’t want to overwhelm possible followers. I didn’t want to bore with my writing that might not be up to snuff. I didn’t want to post average or below average images. I know I’m not organized or a good designer so the thoughts and presentation aren’t up to par.

I worry about all these things and stop creating. A constant fight I need to overcome. Well maybe it is average work at best but at least I’m going to keep plugging away trying to get better for the time being. Because the beauty around me needs to be captured and the thoughts I have might help someone in addition to myself.

I also took my old (and I mean old) Kodak out this morning because I had my long lens on the Nikon. Still takes an acceptable image for a 8 mp camera from 2007.

A final dusting

A final dusting overnight. At least I hope it’s the final blast of snow for the season. I’m ready for spring myself. But I got out and walked a few spots this morning between 6 and 8am. Was fairly brisk but a beautiful morning it was. Snow has a way of quieting life and letting you reflect with less noise and distraction. Combine that with the sound of running water from a brook and I was very content. Actually stood at a few spots and just listened, forgetting I needed to maximize every free moment to shoot the quickly passing conditions.

Felt good to get out and shoot again. Took a hiatus from it for a few days. Not intentional, just busy with life. But now I’m thinking I want to go out again today and do some more. I know were going for a family walk this weekend and that will be another opportunity for some candid work and maybe some nature depending on the path and park chosen.

It also feels good to get in front of the computer and write share some thoughts again. I was letting life get out of balance again and working on this blog, photographing and creating again keeps that positive balance I need. While I’m still good at the technical work I do and I enjoy learning new things there they just don’t excite me like they used to. It doesn’t stop me from trying my best or applying myself fully, it’s just different at this stage of my life.

It’s that time again

OK, time to freeze our behinds off again for a few days. No matter how warm it gets during the summer here, I never get as uncomfortable as I am when it gets as cold as it can get here. So the HAWK (what my friends and I call the cold) is in town with his whole family it appears. Well I plan on giving them plenty of space by staying inside as much as possible. I’m sure I’m going to get a call from my friend who is walking his lab down by the river today and saying it’s just brisk outside.

Snowball Stand

I’ll take the large dirty snowball with salt on top. What a mess out there on the roads. But I won’t say more without adding another thanks to the men and women who take care of our highways and streets for us. They look beat, just like every resident in this area. I’ve spent parts of 3 days now shoveling out. I know my children won’t like that but everyone has to work. I did try to do it right and I’m not really that sore from it at all.

And a wonderful neighbor Scott came over with his front end loader to finish off what the plow put back into our driveway that we had shoveled out. Again, no offence to the snow plow driver. It’s got to go somewhere. Was just nice to have our street cleared on late Monday.

So be prepared for disappearing lanes, sudden stops out of nowhere. Be courteous, yeah I know it’s not in you, but give it a shot. If I can do it anyone can. Also be patient with your local businesses also. It’s not like snow didn’t fall on them also. I did go by O’Donnell Honda today and they were plowing away so we could go test drive those nice new cars in the heavily salted roads.

A prickly start

Well we got all our shopping done. We have been comfortably snug in the homestead preparing for the storm which is here. And as long as I have power I’m going to be a happy camper. But losing that is a real possibility if history is any measure. And I’ll really need it on soon if it does go off because my better half has a birthday to celebrate in the coming days. And no power would leave her unhappy and therefore I would be unhappy.

I think I’ll work through the night and prepare as much material as I can and maybe even learn how to use the scheduled publish option I think I read about at one point. See even old guys can learn to adapt.

I know, your asking, why run a picture of a wild cactus when we are about to get 2-3 feet of snow in 36 hours or less? Well it’s because I want to and I found it along with some other images as I was cleaning out an old slide drawer. And I’m searching through drawers because I don’t feel that good to be out and about shooting right now.

Maybe later tonight after we get the first 12 inches of snow. Maybe not. I know were going to get enough snow, that pictures of it will get old fast. So why start early, might as well change it up a bit.

Sometimes photography is a wonderful thing. Like when you remember the day you stopped along Murray Hill road to snap this shot. It’s the rolling hills that used to dominate this county. A warm summer day. Cattle grazing. Yeah, simpler days.

Oh and another shot that has to be 40-50 years old along Gorman Road below. I grew up near this location. Hammond Village to be exact. I’m sure the few land owners in that area weren’t thrilled with that new community at the time either. I still like to drive down Gorman Road but that has changed also.

Wow, if I was really prepared I’d have all my devices fully charged. Well 3 out of 4 isn’t bad. Let me go plug-in the last one. And as you can see below I’ve transitioned back to the cold reality of winter we are all facing now. Use your heads, don’t overdo it with the shovels. Keep warm and dry. And enjoy the WEEK OFF OF WORK. Just kidding with that last thought. Take two weeks off.

Sleepy Sunday and a holiday Monday

Well, it’s almost Monday. What, a holiday Monday? I guess court won’t be in session today. No problem, people in my profession work holidays. We also work weekends and nights. We work all the time which is a major problem with this type of job. But its good to have work as they say. And if your work covers your bills and needs than your good to go.

Running like a stream

Well not really running like a stream, but I’m walking more and that is kind of like this stream. Slow and steady. Just like these shots along Henryton Road earlier today. It’s a goal of mine this year to get back in fairly good shape. The weight part is doing well but getting my energy and stamina back is the first thing on the agenda for this month and next.

I’ve gotten out now 2 days in a row shooting a bit. Not a lot of time either day, but its good to keep plugging away at the craft. And the exercise while doing it helps my first objective. I’m also starting to realize how much exercise leads to a good attitude again. Always knew that but when pain is in the way that benefit gets deluded. But as my health returns a bit I’m again feeling the benefit.

I don’t know if this warm weather has changed the growing season or not. But I did see this farm combine with some activity around it along Route 99 today. I don’t know why farms are so interesting to me. I admire people who work the land I guess. It’s a business where so many things aren’t in your control. Things that can wipe you out. Weather I would be guessing is one of them. But on the other end, you see harvest of your hard work and skill come in.

You know, I’m going to have to start reading about whom I’m going to vote for very soon. At least that is what I thought of when I looked at the shot I took at Centennial Lake the other day below. I can hear the Republicans (gulls) saying look at those stupid ducks swimming in that freezing water. And I can hear the Democrats (ducks) saying look at those stupid gulls standing on the freezing ice. And neither realizing they are in the same body of water. In all my years of voting, I can’t remember a time when I’ve been more disappointed by all the choices available on either side of the fence. I’m tired of the lies, soundbites, money grubbing, arrogance, hate and lack on leadership and a plan everyone can get behind to be a real leader in the world. Yeah we might be the biggest guy on the block because of our might. But were showing that we aren’t all that smart and are easily divided and have gotten so petty with our own self interest that getting anything accomplished now in Government is impossible.

You know I’m thankful for small things in life, like the tools my Mom passed down to me. And two of them were camera lenses. One a AF Nikon 70-210mm f/4-5.6 and 35-70 f/3.5. The guy at the photo store laughed and said maybe a hundred or 150 for the two of them together. Certainly not fine pieces of glass I’ve had to work with in front of that nice D7100 body. But you know what, they work just fine for lenses that are 28 years old. And I’ve used them the last 2 years (I wish more) and they have held up fine. Yeah they might not give me the professional quality or abilities of fine glass. But they got this amateur photographer off the ground. One of them was so bad it made the 10 worst Nikon lens list by a prominent reviewer. And yes I know I need to move on from them and will but a big thanks for leaving them for me and enabling me to get shooting again at a level above using that Kodak Z812 I bought long ago. See, even when your parents are gone they are always leaving you gifts along the way in life. From tools and lessons to many memories.

So I hear the sun makes a return again today after the rain last night so let me get things charged up and ready to go. Because while Tom Cruise might feel the “need for speed.”  I feel the need to create.

Caught sunning, Progress? and Thoughts

Pulled up along Manor Lane off Rt 108 yesterday afternoon. Hadn’t been back that way in a long time. Unfortunately I disturbed this fellows nap in the sun. I believe the eyes were shut when I rolled up slowly and got out. But they weren’t for long. For all three horses seemed to be interested in the new company.

I love turning down roads in this county that I’ve never been on before (very, very few) or ones that I haven’t cruised for years or decades. Yeah I used the word cruised. Because that is what we used to do. I’ve left a lot of rubber on streets, routes, drives, interstates throughout this county. Every paved and sometimes unpaved surface. Most of it through very normal driving but I can’t say that I’ve never done a few burnouts also. I’ve also ridden a bike and motorcycle also over a gazillion miles of county roads in addition to those in the cage.

Yeah its a bad hair day, did you stand out in that wind the other day. Photo by Mike Hartley

I still enjoy driving and seeing all the beauty this county provides. But its more of a challenge now. For the progress and density of growth has started to overwhelm me. I miss the openness. I miss roads that weren’t bumper to bumper cars. I miss long stretches of rolling hills and the occasional red barn in the distance. Yeah that red barn is still there but it has a new addition to it.

026

I remember the day when you could spot a lot of friends out on the road by their particular cars.  That’s a lost art with the volume of traffic we have now and the divided highways. I realize that time changes everything. I was trying to relate the changes I’ve seen to words. That is very easy and difficult at the same time. For if I wander down to Rocky George as I once did in the late 60’s and early 70’s, things seem relatively unchanged. Swing sets might be made of different things. But the water, woods and roads remain the same to my untrained eyes. Days where every home seemed to have a tire swing and basketball hoop.

Rope swing and basketball hoop, what more could one need.

Then there is Columbia. That didn’t exist when we came to Howard County in 1961. The days were everything was single lane roads. Days were in a good winter you might wait for many days for a plow to come by. Time when you still went to school with 3-6 inches of snow falling or already on the ground.

If it weren’t Columbia it would have still been mass development of some sort so in retrospect that “Planned Community” is probably a great thing. I’m sure some might argue but for a city, it’s pretty well disguised. And while it has a beauty and many places that I like to shoot at, I still gravitate towards the old school Howard County. Guess that is what I grew up with and what I’m comfortable with.

I always thought I’d be happy to retire here. Some days I wonder about that.

So this little over 1 mile stretch of old county road provided me with a few things to share today and I hope to be taking many more views from around the area. And don’t worry, I’ll continue to share my thoughts about development.

Condition

Saw a note from a friend about an old neighbor I grew up with, passing on Dec 31st. He graduated Atholton high school the year before I did. He was a Marine (didn’t know that part about him) and former Howard County police officer. His service is this week and I think I’ll go and pay my respects and if I can’t make the time for that I think I’ll pull by his home in Hammond Village and pause for a few moments. For Mike taught me something recently.

Condition of relationships. Photo by Mike Hartley

Condition of relationships.

One is, it’s never to late to reach out and reconnect with good people. Take the time to do it,  for I always haven’t taken each person up on it and I’ve regretted it from time to time. Yeah were all busy and yes we all have packed relationships and don’t think we make enough time for people we already hold close. The thought about taking on more is staggering. But do it. You don’t have to make huge commitments with today’s technology. Just a letter or note once every so often. You will both benefit from it. Because life is about shared experiences and creating new ones so why not include all the people you can that make you happy.

I saw a few comments about how young he was (59) And being I’m 58 I’d have to agree with that but a wise older co-worker once taught me a valuable lesson many years ago. He was about 60 at the time and he was always going to either a wedding or funeral. And he would note that the funerals were getting more frequent and not just older people but people his age. I saw him re prioritize his life and retire shortly there after. And he hasn’t regretted a day of it from what he tells me as people passing around him has increased.

No I can’t retire anytime soon. But I am about connecting more with people who have been in my life at various stages. I have been blessed with having lifelong friends. Most 3-4 decades old and very close. But I’ve also lost touch with some good friends from both childhood and work. And I think I’m going to drop a few notes or maybe even make a few calls to say hello. I’m sure some might be short or some might not meet with a reply, but others will be very fruitful. Because of having experienced it before you know you can just pick up with some people from almost the moment you left off be it a year or a decade. And the things that made that relationship special at that previous time tend to come rushing back. And then you can move on and create new laughs.

I try to be a good friend. I try to be a good co-worker. I try to be a good Dad. I’m sure I’ve failed at each at times so if you see a negative review about my life, it probably could be deserved. But I won’t let it be from a lack of effort. Because you never know when that last conversation or laugh or fond memory that might even trigger a tear might happen and then never happen again.

The nice thing about being older is that sometimes recollections of others are special gifts. Especially if they knew your family and go way back in some way in your life. It can lead to many thoughts and memories, maybe put aside or seen or heard from another perspective that now bring something more to an already special person or moment in your life. Of course, life is risky and at times it can go other ways. Because we all know life has two sides.

So today I’m going to reach out to a few old friends. One in person and one by email. And I’m sure both of these will be met with a very positive response. See when starting something always set a few victories early to stay inspired.

And like the sign above says. We all become Used, Old And RARE. As in Treasures, if you work at it.

PS: The sign above is from Ellicott City. The book store at the top of the street I believe. Thank you for sharing your sign.

But the end result is the same. Death.
  • So what to do about the worlds ill’s today. I have a full glass of loose change. Time for a few charitable donations. You’d be surprised what a big glass full of loose change amounts to.
  • Well I’ll also play the flight of fantasy called the Powerball lotto being it’s so high. And if I hit then you can see some true donations. And no I don’t spend more than $2 on it and I only play a half-dozen times a year at the most.
  • Oops, too many words and not enough pictures in this Post. Balance you idiot.

A Sunday morning shoot and stroll

Like I said, I was going to get shooting again and I was going to try to explore the county more. Well I only had an hour this morning and had to stop for gas but it was great to get out and work at this craft. I also did a bit of walking but really too cold for my taste. But a friend of mine says embrace the Hawk so a bit of walking I did. Plus its easier to get better shots if I get my behind out of the seat while I still can.

Then again I sat in the car to take this shot along Woodstock Road above.  And the one below of DD.

I almost stopped at the new (well relatively) Dunkin Doughnuts but I don’t drink coffee and doughnuts are the last thing I need even though I do desire them.

Actually was going to throw this picture out but it reminded me of one of my pet peeves in this County. All the damn Real Estate signs at every corner. I’m tired of it. I was tired of it decades ago and I’m still tired of it today.

Well now that I got that off my chest, back to some pictures. As I traveled down Marriotsville I’ve always admired the flag at the county dump up on the hill catching sunlight. Well, not much of a breeze this morning to make it fly but it was standing tall as always. Hats off to the staff that runs that up and down each day.

The Shell station confirmed my frozen fingers and slow-moving zoom functions this morning. Even though this might be suspect because the time that follows the temperature there is an hour off still. Kind of sad nobody has corrected that yet. But who am I to complain. My clock in my car is wrong 6 months out of the year. Or whenever daylight savings time is.

And the price is holding below $2 at the St Johns Shell. Wonder how long these prices will last. Gets tempting to buy that muscle car with gas at this level.

Drove down to the County Courthouse. And took a walk till my hands and equipment were plenty cold. I’m going to have to read up on cold weather shooting tips for photographers if I’m going to be out in this climate.

New Years Eve

Spent the afternoon visiting my Mother in-law. She is at Encore rehab, assisted and nursing living. And is there for the rehab part and looks like she is doing fine. It was refreshing to hear her say “I’m not going to let this thing beat me.”  And said with determination and conviction. You need that kind of determination to heal both physically and mentally. And I’m proud of her attitude.

Don’t have time to pull an end of year review of my blog. Not really interested in going back but more interested in getting out and snapping a few hundred frames to start the New Year early on Friday morning. Yeah its fun to look back, because as they say “if you forget the past, your doomed to repeat it.” And that is the last thing I want to happen when the object of this blog is to keep it fresh and growing.

But I will look back at this year as the time my wife and I got much closer. I think crisis will to that or it can also tear apart couples. I’m personally glad it was the first. I’ll remember it as a year of personal and physical challenges. I’ll remember it as a year of professional challenges. And in another 3 hours I can say I made it through them all this year.

I also remember it as the year my Son got engaged. I remember it as a year where I really got busy with this blog. Even though I had started it in 2014, this year was the year it came alive. Yeah it wasn’t the consistent effort I had hoped for but with all the things going on I’m pleased with my effort and start. Mainly because I think this helps my health. I think sharing and applying myself to a task gives me purpose besides the job that pays the bills. This lets me be in charge. This lets me share my views or images. This lets me relax. Its kind of like my personal therapy session.

So tomorrow begins a new year with a new effort and new ideas. Can you smell what TME is cooking?

Random Thoughts for Thursday December 31st 2015

  • Wishing everyone a healthy New Year.
  • I don’t know at what age I stopped going out to tear up the old year and ring in the new one but it happened. I’m fine with being home and relaxing. There is plenty of good sports to keep me entertained. And its much easier to see, hear and hold my wife the way I would like at home instead of some loud and crowded party.
  • The only way to repay someone who has shown great love and devotion is to repay it in kind.
  • We did as any good Marylander has done this evening. We are eating crab cakes.

Foggy hump day morning

Being we have so much darkness this time of year in the northeast US, I figured I had better start to brush up on my night photography. It’s something I’ve wanted to accomplish this year but time is short to make that come true so we carry this goal into 2016. But it does accomplish the start of my goal to try to do a shot in Howard County each day and post it.

I was going to shoot some Christmas lights but wasn’t feeling up to snuff. But I see a simple gate in the fog along Folly Quarter Road and I turned the car around and grabbed a few frames before heading home. Actually this gate leads to a huge estate that is for sale for I think 7 million $$. I believe I’ll head out this evening and shoot some Xmas displays.

And what was that brief light in the sky yesterday? Something bright behind those clouds but it never appeared. Rumor is some used to call it the sun. Well even though it’s not supposed to clear today, I think I might take a walk by the Patapsco river later. That is so close and I’ve ignored it long enough.

  • I have cleared more wall space for photographs. So my color printer starts acting up as I get to work trying to fill it. As Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say in a whiny voice “It’s always Something, if it’s not one thing, it’s another.”
  • It’s good to see families stepping up to take care of parents in their elder years. It’s sad to see those that don’t have that care.

Busy Monday

Aren’t they all. Busy that is. One appointment or task or place to be after another. Such is life and I’ll never again complain about life or being busy. I believe busy is good. I know it is for the mind. And when I apply it to exercise that is good also. Wish I did more of the later.

So I’ll post a few random shots from the weekend. That same weekend that was also very busy so I’m not thrilled with the limited selection. But in an effort to keep working hard on posting, sharing, photographing and writing each day. And by reading some others tips on blogging I’m learning to work and plan ahead more.

Color surrounds us. Photo by Mike Hartley

I have to learn to transition from work, chore and responsibility time to creative time better. Lots of time, I’m mixing my shooting between family trips or events. Hell if I didn’t do that I’d never get a chance to get some practice.

But the transition I think about is one where I’m relaxed. Where I can think and slow down and see things I usually pass at light speed. Or hear sounds or take the time to look at a young child’s expressions.

For when relaxed and open, you are going to find things in life you didn’t know were there or were a quick blur seldom taken into account.

Anything can be interesting. Hell I could spend half my life photographing sand and I’d always be able to find something new. But I can only do that when I’m at peace. When I allow myself to turn some parts of  my life off.

I’m just glad I get the chance to spend a few minutes a day to think creatively. It’s a good contrast to the exacting computer work I do for the job that pays the bills. So I must continue this mission I’m on.

Another back road drive with a few stops

I love just exploring the old roads of this county (Howard). Especially at this time of season. The only problem is there is absolutely no place to pull over in a lot of spots. I’m going to have to drag my better half along with me and let her drive so I can hop out and shoot more. Wishing it wasn’t so overcast this morning.

I’m going to try to get back to one of my original goals which was to get out and shoot part of the county each day. Of course it’s fairly easy when nature provides the palette it does at this time. So the challenge will be to stay creative without the color.

  • It has been a beautiful fall this year.
  • Only by getting out and experiencing life, can you enjoy it. There are more things than a keyboard and smart phone.
  • You know for two lenses that aren’t worth crap, they certainly give my photography a lot of mileage.
  • Dinner with my family this evening. What a wonderful treat. Celebrating my Son in-laws birthday.
  • I love learning new things or new ways to think about things.
  • I’m going to see if I can lose another 10 lbs by walking more often and longer.

Random Color of early Fall

Took a ride to Brighton Dam today and grabbed a few shots. Had a wonderful lunch at El Azteca in Clarksville and ran some errands. But the best part of the day was spending it with my wife. After a long work week for both of us it was nice to spend a Friday, taking a walk, talking and grabbing a bite to eat. Just like the old days when we had some time to ourselves.

I’m so in love with her. And at almost 35 years together, it just keeps growing. I knew I was in love with her when I met her. She is the best thing in my life and gave me the two best children I could ask for. Again I state for the record I’m a piece of work. One who doesn’t deserve such love and riches. And I thank her for sticking with me despite my many faults.

But each day now I spend in thought about her if I’m not with her. If I am, I spend it looking deeply at her and holding her hand often. Or giving her a kiss or a hug. I’ve always told her I love her. I’ve even had my times where I have shown her my love in some very good ways. I’ve always been a good provider. Well I’ve kept us out of the poor house but were not swimming in wealth. Except in the kind of wealth where I have her and she has me.

So as I head out to see some friends for a quick HH and then back home into my wife’s loving embrace, I think about what a great day its been. How wonderful it is to witness the change of season. How going out yesterday in the upper 70s and warm breeze to the brisk temps of 60 with a cool breeze today is reminding me we are in a state of change. But that is the human condition. Adapting to change.

Outside

Wow, what a beautiful day here yesterday in the northeast US. Reminded me how nice it is to be out and about. The changing of seasons and the colors. It’s a great day to be alive. I’m starting to appreciate all the small things I take for granted as I whip through the work days and chores in between the few moments of fun with family and friends.

This guy reminded me of what I’ll be doing in a few weeks out on the bay. Spending a sunny day on the water. Now while yesterday was in the 70s and this young man was going barefoot, I will most likely dress a bit warmer when its November. You never know what you’re going to get in this state weather wise.

I only had a few moments to shoot yesterday but hopefully today will provide more opportunity. It’s a wonderful time of year if you like color. But one of the things I used to hate about this season when I rode a motorcycle was wet leaves. Being they are all over the road this time of year its a real safety issue on 2 wheels. Be careful bikes, if you get some moisture.

Kids, birds and thoughts

As we wandered the Columbia Mall this weekend, with the throngs of people who had the same idea and were tired of being trapped inside because of the weather, we came upon the play area for young children. What a joy to watch. Shear joy and abandon. I will never grow tired of watching the natural display of energy and emotion kids bring to play.

I was just a hair off with my aim on this one. My back yard yesterday was a bird airport. I got lucky and caught a trio of blue birds. One on the tarmac lower left, one landing lower right and one just took off upper left.

So now that the sun has returned, keep your head up and eyes open for that next great thing. And remember it isn’t in a lotto ticket or fantasy football bet or job promotion or new car or big house. It’s that next kiss and hug from the ones you love.

So get off that merry-go-round of life that is focused on stuff and make it about experiences. And remember stupid. It’s about family and friends first. The only time you get on that merry-go-round is with your son or daughter on your lap. Riding a floor buffer with a friend is also acceptable.

Feeling FINE

You know each day I’m finding more of a spring in my step. I’m learning that no matter what is ahead its how you look at each day that allows you to feel happy, feel fulfilled, feel connected, feeling like your making a contribution and to move forward. Yesterday I finally got around to some work on etchings in stone. Felt good to create something. Felt good to get moving on a  project. Felt good to make something for someone else.

Of course with practice my skills should increase so I’ll wait a bit before sharing some of those pieces. Thinking about switching to wood just for the ease of work with the materials and that I can get quicker practice on this. I’m realizing I have to think things through a bit more before grinding away. It is exciting to just freelance at it though. Sometimes those are the things I’ve been most pleased with.

Lunch at Shannon’s.

Took my wife and in-laws to Shannon’s today. Well let me correct myself, they treated us (thank you again). I’ve always like Shannon’s Bar and Restaurant. Its good comfort food. I’m surprised it doesn’t attract a younger crowd though. Food was excellent as always. Never been disappointed here. Today’s meal was a grilled Reuben which was great. Actually two of us had the Reuben. A tuna melt and open faced roast beef sandwich with lots of gravy rounded out the order. Service was good as always.

  • So much to do, isn’t it great. So little time, doesn’t that suck.
  • I love living in this county. But its on the verge of such a drastic change that I’m not sure it’s still for me.
  • I had a county office tailgating me the other day. Too bad the law doesn’t apply to all.

So I’ll leave you this morning with this smiling face below. Just playing around.

Tuesday thoughts

I have no direction today. I’m on autopilot. I played some basketball and my mind wandered to my youth. That was till I tried that extreme reverse lay-up and my back reminded my I’m in my late 50’s. But I powered through. Work is a blur lately. So much change and chaos. Don’t get me wrong, my professional work life has been one big change. I’ve worked through the golden age of publishing in the Newspaper industry. I’ve gone through so many technology changes I could be a walking museum.

Yesterday I decided to see if anyone was having an early practice or game at the Wallace Park HCYP fields along Frederick Road. As I passed by the coffee shop on the corner I saw something on the sign I hadn’t seen before. “ICE CREAM.” So I’m guessing I’m going to give this a try for the pastries and other treats in the morning and stop by in the evening with my wife for an ice cream or shake.

To bad the fields look quiet again. I miss those days of helping coach little league. Helping young kids learn the game and sportsmanship is, a wonderful thing to share. And the joy the kids display is more than any paycheck could give.

This coming weekend I’m going to be a shooting fool. I hope to get so much work done photographically starting Friday that I’ll be boring you with photos from it for months to come. It’s not often I get to spend hours in a day shooting for a few days in a row.

So another few days at the job that pays the bills and then a glorious weekend. I sense the last swimming weekend of the year might be upon my. I also have an itch for something I haven’t had all year. Well I’ve had a ton of crabmeat but I haven’t PICKED any crabs this year. That is almost grounds to be ejected from the state of Maryland so I had better get on that horse and get a dozen or so of those bay dwellers.

So as this day winds down, I look forward to reflecting on how wonderful it was. How much fun it was to be able to get out and about. How lucky I am to have a great partner in life. How my stomach doesn’t ache for a meal.

Other random observations:

Through the abundance of chores, through the time spent on the job that pays the bills, through the endless appointments, through the endless commute, through the restless nights. My hammock cures all. Well as least for as long as the nap last.

Was it me or was every 3 out of 4 commercials for either Fan Duel or Draft Kings during football games this past weekend. That is not right. We are going to have a massive gambling problem in this country before long.

Sunday shells and stuff

Those were some rains yesterday and last night. I should get my backside outside in that and learn to shoot foul weather pics. But instead I decided to tinker around in my basement which becomes my makeshift studio. Never really thought or practiced studio shots before. I’m hoping to learn by shooting more. Anyway I also found a few close-up filters that were so old I had to clean them a few times before even using them. I’d say they had to be about 45 years old to be exact. And being I didn’t have much money back then the quality of the glass is suspect. I even stacked them at one point, but its good to experiment.

Well lets see. I’ve misplaced (forgot where I stashed them) the different color background paper I had. Strike one. Lights, still don’t have that setup. Strike 2 and no shutter release – strike 3. Guess I could use the timer option but I don’t know that function on the camera yet. Tripod-check, table-check, camera-check, seashells-check. So you get what you have above.

Lets see if I can so something more creative in the future.

I was a little slow and didn’t have enough lens to catch this guy well over in Columbia at the lake the other afternoon. Guess I’ll have to concentrate on the Hawks up this end of the county.

Beside me lays the output of a book I started to write about 6 1/2 years ago. I like the concept, I like the stories and ideas. I like the reason I started to write it. I like the effort I put into it till I forgot why I was writing it. Then it languished in never-never land till I output the contents of what I had to date to paper last week. The reason for writing it was re-inspired recently and this time it will not languish in never-never land. For today I begin again anew. And that is probably better because the first draft needed a lot of refinement.

What is the perfect day

Was just thinking about what makes up the perfect day, if there is such a thing. That day on the beach, that Christmas morning as a child, the day I got married and I let my mind continue wandering that path for a bit. Then I realized that they are all perfect so far. For if I look at small victories or pleasures each day I’m alive it’s a great experience. Even my worst days for the most part I have a lot to be thankful for.

I slept in Friday. I rarely do such a thing. It felt great. I also went for a walk in Columbia with my better half. We don’t get a chance to do that often with our schedules, so that is wonderful. Time to talk, laugh and cry together. We hugged, we kissed. We came home and shared an evening together. We shared our home which we worked so hard for.

I have enough to eat today. I have a roof over my head. I have my health (sort of) but for the most part I’m good now. The sun was out and in the low 80’s so weather was perfect. So it was another in a string of wonder perfect days I’ve had. I’m glad I have the ability to see that now.

Today we even might go to Soft Stuff for an evening ice cream. I know, it’s not the best thing for me and it doesn’t set the right example if you’re trying to be healthy. But as a good friend of mine who uses words sparingly says “F it”. But what better thing to do on a rainy Saturday.

Thinking about the perfect day is a mindset for me from now on. Yeah there are things that piss me off throughout the day. Poor drivers mostly but I’ve learned to appreciate so much lately that I feel kind of guilty about any complaining I’ve done about life before this. For it showed the ignorance I had for the simple things or just the fact that I’m lucky enough to draw breath for another day. But now were on the right track.

For simple things like hearing my children’s voices on the phone. Sunshine hitting my back. The ability to go for a walk. Seeing friends and family are much more special.

So back to our walk in Columbia. Even though I’ve lived here before Columbia was a concept in James Rouse’s head, I hadn’t taken a walk around Lake Kittamaqundi on that new path they put around it. A very nice job was done on that project. Lots of benches to grab a break on or just relax and let the quiet surround you. A nicely paved and wide path all around it with a few nice bridges. And it’s pretty much level walk.

We did see some older folks. Some walking and some on bikes. There were also some young people. Of course the two kids with the Jehovah Witness church interrupted the zen feeling of the walk and sights and talk we had, I kept it very short and didn’t get rude but it was an unwanted interruption none the less.

It was funny as we strolled around the lake remembering the early days of the lake with skating or hockey games going on in the winter, fireworks from the roof of your car sitting on the medium of Route 29 and then walking over to the lakefront and back again. Parties, festivals and concerts. Taking a boat out to the small island near the north end and for nefarious activities. Oh the days of youth.

So below is a gallery of the walk and things I was able to capture and share today. I wouldn’t mind seeing some of that blue sky today but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen.

Free time and it RAINS! But its football season

Not sure if I want to get outside and shoot the elements this evening or work on setting up my studio in the basement? Maybe both if I’m not to tired from watching the game later with the boys. For its FOOTBALL season and that is a good as an excuse to get together and raise some hell as any.

For our group it’s more about the time together than the game most of the time. We love the game of football, but were not your fantasy guys or the overly loyal or over-zealous fans. We have our teams we follow and support. We stay up with what is going on with teams and players but it’s about the friendships and laughter and catching up.

It’s about the BBQ and beverages. It’s about the ability to stay up till the end of the game and not be photographed sleeping with a beer balancing on your stomach with your hand on the mug. It’s about keeping one of our members from getting in a 3 point stance. It’s about sharing a gripe about the job or traffic.

It’s about what is going on health wise. It’s about what our spouses are up to and how happy we are or aren’t from time to time. And when you have been married as long as this group has, you have some war stories. It’s about what your siblings are up to or aren’t doing.

It’s about catching up on what are kids are doing and the last time we saw them and what we did. It’s about sharing stories from the past. It’s about planning trips for the future. Its talking about the few days left in our scheduled that the wives haven’t booked already to get together. I call that part counter planning. But of course women are better at it than we are.

It’s about a team that gathers together to celebrate life but never talk about that fact itself because we are too busy doing it. It’s a strange collection of men who I call my Brothers. I owe them so much. I cherish their friendships. If there is anything positive in me they helped shape and form it. A toast to my Brothers, no matter what sports season it is, or how misguided their sports loyalty’s are.

OK, I know I’m a month ahead of time with these but with the way time is passing the trick or treater’s will be upon us again.

These are some old shots. Very old shots, I think that they may have been shot with that old Kodak D50 digital camera.

I think these were out at Landing Road Cider Mill Farm. Well of course I had to go Google it before wasting a ride down there to see if it still there. But this web page says the farm is now a housing development. Kind of sad. It does give some history about it and some good cider tips.

Wow, another old-time pleasure of the county lost forever. That place used to attract a huge crowd in the fall on the weekends. And the kids loved it.

Random Thoughts for Thursday September 10th 2015

  • I once got a fortune (yes from a cookie) that said “you have the ability to touch the lives of many people.” I really believe that is true, I just hope its in a positive way.
  • I wasn’t always at peace with myself. And I might not always be at peace with myself in the future. But I can say I’ve had some days finally that I feel that way.
  • When I look at my family, I feel like I was a lottery winner. One lucky SOB.
  • Professional cultures vary like the number of businesses in operation.
  • I finally realized I can do a lot. And all I need to do is keep that confidence to do more.

Time got away from me yesterday but won’t let that happen again anytime soon.

Equal time

Being I have to spend part of my day working in the city I figure its only fitting to spend some time away from it when I’m off. So today I took a drive down a local street (Henryton Road) that I haven’t been on in a while. A beautiful spot that is just a long dead-end. It used to be a through street till a flood took out the bridge a long time ago I believe.

I’m going to be walking this road a good bit in the future. For not only is it littered with beautiful woodland, it has streams snaking through it all along the road. When you enter it there are farms on both sides of the street. As I drove down the street its like my dead-end street, people wave and smile. They watch but they trust.

It’s so quiet down here also. As I got out of my car a few times the only thing I could hear was the water in the streams and occasional squirrel jumping from branch to branch. I’m going back on Wednesday to measure out some distances in the car. Then I’m going to walk it a few times this coming fall to see what gems I can find. And I’m going to bring my tripod along.

Morning ride in the county, under the clouds

A Saturday morning on a holiday weekend and out before the crack of dawn I go. I’m all excited because the weatherman says its going to be beautiful out. So out I got at 7am and it’s cloudy as hell. But I’m not deterred so I head out to a spot I thought about yesterday because I haven’t been down there in many years.

So down Ten Oaks road I head to Brighten Dam road. I remember going out there with my Mom a few decades back to look at the azalea’s blooming in the spring.

Well today the lower area of the dam is not accessible. So I walked over the bridge a bit and caught some early morning fishing going on.

And as I stood there I was still in awe of what I just drove past. I now know where the “Have’s” live. The homes in this area are just stunning and huge and every other description you can come up with. On the way down I was passed going the other way by a Porsche, Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW and other high-end rides. I thought there was something special going on till I saw some of the estates.

Very impressive building and landscaped properties, so if your inclined to take a peek at the affluence in the area take a drive out here. I’m going to make sure I go back when things are in bloom around the dam to get some good color along the water.

So I leave this spot and head down Highland road. Just before the intersection at 108 and 216 this little gem caught my eye. I have no idea what it is beside military so I’ve got to go look this up or stop someday and ask some questions on this. And of course Google is your friend and I found a picture below it of in action. Never had seen this type vehicle before today. Being my Dad was a WWII vet I might have to go meet the keeper of this toy.

Just after this shot of the vintage vehicle, I notice the sun trying unsuccessfully to break through the clouds. So I figure if it does Rocky George might be a nice close spot to get a few shots. Plus I needed to take a walk and get some exercise. And while I was enjoying my musical selections, I needed to get up.

032

So as soon as I’m walking down a short path to the water this guy takes off on the other side. Oh how nice a long lens would be at this time.

No problem, I’ll get it someday and then he will be as sharp and beautiful as some of the other images I see out here. But they are still majestic birds so I had to put this out there anyway.

The water level was low so I walked along the shore line. I’ll take the wooded trail another day when I get my better half to go along with me.

There were few people out this early which was a bit surprising. I guess people were enjoying sleeping in. With the overcast I was beginning to feel like I should have been one of them catching more shut-eye.

That blue heron wasn’t the only one going fishing this fine morning. There was a father/son team I ran into that hadn’t had any luck yet but the youthful enthusiasm wasn’t deterred one bit.

Oh, free photographic tip. Anytime you catch someone launching a boat, take pictures. While most like this one are successful you never know when your going to catch someone taking an unexpected swim or making their SUV into a submarine.

So I stay out for 2 1/2 hours hoping the clouds will dissipate and I get maybe 2 minutes worth of sun peaking between clouds. Well when I pull back into my driveway it decides to come out for good. But now its work and chore time so there goes that. No problem, I’ll pick up later today when I have to run some errands.

The thing about photography is taking your hardware with you at all times and being open to seeing things. So I didn’t let the clouds get me down and upon reflecting like the canoe above, it was a great morning.

Saturday in the saddle for some

What a beautiful day. The blue of the sky this afternoon is hard to describe. I know I watched it from my hammock and it was very soothing. So I applaud this gentleman on the bike that keeps our skies blue. I put a lot of miles on a bicycle at one time in my life. Damn good exercise and a good way to see things. Of course with the traffic in this area it’s fairly dangerous also. But the thought of it has me thinking I might have to go wander that new bike shop (Race Pace Bicycles) on Bethany Lane.

Had a wonderful dinner at Portelli’s in Ellicott City on Friday night. It is great to see them thriving and busy. It’s a tough town to sustain a business so when you find one who is standing the test of time, it’s going to be good. Service was great and my in-laws were very happy. My favorite is the first dish below. Was perfect last night.

Just a Reminder — OK, you have been on the rides down in Ocean City while you were on vacation. You have been to your local county fair. Only one more big one to go. Yep the Maryland State Fair on August 28th to September 7th. This is a special time of year for me because the State Fair was the first date I had with my wife. And despite this she married me anyway. There is no luckier man than I.

Howard County Fair

The 70th annual Howard County Fair has taken place and we were part of it again. A family tradition here in this household. We still go and I love it. Mainly because it’s so simple. It represents a lot of the old county before it was so developed. It’s about the kids and smiles. The competitions of animals, arts and crafts, gardening/farming, cooking and talent.

A pair of my favorites. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s about the rides for the kids and its about the Pit Beef for the adults. It’s many things to many people. They had a nice run of weather this week and I hope attendance was good. From those I spoke to it was. Which surprised me to see some empty booths in the Exhibition Hall. Then again it was the day before the fair closed so I guess a few booked early.

I didn’t take anywhere the number of images I had hoped for because I got lost in family time. From eating the pit beef, pit turkey or put ham along with some great onion rings to wandering the barns, it was a wonderful time that just relaxed me.

For any minutes with my family is a wonderful thing. And while there isn’t the same excitement as when they were young and wanting to do the rides and games, it’s still wonderful.

It also represents decades of memories. I used to work for the Howard County Times from the mid 70s to the mid 90s. So working the Fair Booth was a volunteer operation staffed by members of the Newspaper staff every year. We would sometimes volunteer for a few shifts during the week. Of course this wasn’t paid except for the free tee shirts we would get. My daughter reminded me of that one which I had forgotten. And it brought a smile back to my face also. I can see those green tee shirts now.

They would sign you up in pairs so one of my best friends and I would always do it. It involved sitting in the Fair Information booth making announcements, giving information, handing out fair copies of the paper and having fun. Of course we took our own cooler with us to keep properly hydrated. Luckily we always kept it under control. But as the night would go on the announcements became more spirited.

So tempting Photo by Mike Hartley

I was looking at this booth all night, yep the sign is correct, Deep Fried Oreo’s. I swear it was calling me each time I walked past it. I have no idea how I avoided not placing an order.

There are lots of booths like this that had total support from my waistline to intake. But I was able to limit myself to one small cherry dip cone at the end of our visit. And unlike many fairs this time of year it was cool enough where it didn’t melt down my hand before I had a chance to finish it.

Something new at the fair. WINE AND BEER. That was a first if my memory strikes me right. Didn’t see any ill effects and most people who want to drink do so without approval anyway. But now you can purchase it in the fairgrounds.

All I know is I love the fair and hope to attend for many more years.

Scotts Cove

An old friend called me the other morning. Rocky George, the paths, water and wildlife. I parked at Scotts Cove. I can’t believe they put a children’s play area there, when did that happen? It’s been decades since I used the trails back there along that water. So as the sun was starting to touch the treetops the other day the voices said to pull my ass off Route 29 and get some fresh air. I took a quick walk down to the water, with camera as always. Now that I’m walking more I’ll have to put this back on the destinations to explore again.

This county has so many wonderful spaces to get out in. Centennial is nice but a bit crowded at times. I used to go to Alpha Ridge till they took the hoop courts down. I feel like I’ve been to most of the parks through sports leagues or just pick-up stuff. I’ll have to get out and re-discover them all again and share them with you through photos. But that start will be next week because today is the Fair and some work on etchings.

And I’ve taken a few minutes to relax and unwind from a stressful part of the week, which I thought was over but it’s dragged me back in today also. So time to regain my focus and step away from the desk.

But before I go a few tidbits below.

I was glad to see a fellow county blogger AnnieRie Uncovered covered the County Fire Event this past Tuesday morning. I worked a night shift the evening before and just couldn’t make the call after an hour of sleep.

So it’s the weekend, get your sword out like the guy below and have at it.

Random Thoughts for Friday August 14th 2015

  • I picked up a basketball for the first time in 2 years I’m guessing. And boy did it feel good. So part of the exercise routine it becomes again. Now I just have to hit the local sports store and see if they are selling games, because I must have misplaced mine.
  • Most quality writing takes time. Obviously I lack time. So thank you for putting up with my scribbles.
  • Recalling many fond memories of the Fair with my children and friends. Seemed like a closer knit community back in the day. Whoops, there I go showing my age.
  • There may be a day that I have nothing booked this weekend. Keep that secret between us please.
  • There is a new net on my basketball hoop. I plan on breaking it in. But I might have to invite friends.

OK, I’m trying to decide if I should take off and go see the Doobie Brothers and Greg Allman at Pier 6 on the 2nd of September?

Agnes 40 years ago

I was digging around an old box and ran across these B&W images (hey, I was a teenager and couldn’t always afford color film) and realized it was 40 years ago that these were taken. That was a bad year. Huge impact on the area and economy with hurricane Agnes. Things didn’t get back to normal for many months and in some cases years for some homes and businesses. One of the worst/costliest storms that I can remember. And it was the rain that wouldn’t stop. I know I have more and if I remember I think I did shoot a roll of color. Now where did I put that?

Ellicott City

I have to force myself not to stop and shoot in this town often. I love it and its got so many gifts photographically. Plus its like an old home that you used to live in. Actually worked in the town for about 6-7 years and loved it. It’s where I started my career in Newspapers. It’s the location of the first business I opened. It’s the town my wife grew up in. Its been the spot of many important meetings, conversations and dinners in my life. Not to mention some wonderful friends from there that I still maintain relationships with today.

I found a few old shots buried in a folder. Wish I had the negatives with them for a better quality scan but what the hell. Would rather post them, than spend time searching.

But I do know I have to find the negative for the picture of Mr Yates behind the counter of his store (above). It brings back fond memories of running over there on hot summer nights and getting a handful or two of 5 cent Popsicle’s and a pack of smokes. If it was payday maybe the 10 cent fudgecicle’s or ice cream sandwich’s. For our plant didn’t have A/C so summers we baked in the pressroom area.

It’s been a while, maybe I should return for a great meal one night. And speaking of night I had these two old shots down by the bridge as I was leaving work late one evening. Yeah our office for our own local paper was behind this picket fence and it was a wonderful spot.

Sunday morning images and thoughts

Nothing like an early Sunday morning ride along a county road in Howard County to start the last day of the weekend. Lots of joggers, bikes, a few motorcyclist and yours truly plodding along in the SUV. Don’t worry, I’m switching back to a car or bike soon. I miss riding the bike because of how much more I saw when riding. So much that I had a long list of places to come back and photograph. I learned this lesson again while riding as a passenger after surgery recently. I saw things going down that road I would never see if driving.

So now I park the beast (SUV) and get my behind out and walk a bit. Wow, exercise, feels great. Just kidding, I enjoyed it for many years but the last two decades I got a bit slack. Well, a bit more than a bit slack. So I’ve decided to use this recent surgery and weight loss to get back on a better plan. A change to food/drink intake and regular exercise. I’ve been pretty good at it so far.

Today was pretty much the first time in a month I’ve gotten outside for a quick shoot. It felt wonderful. Even though I didn’t come back with much it felt good to concentrate on the work I enjoy again. It did take me to an area I’d like to explore more. The Tridelphia Reservoir. Looks like a good area for nature shots.

Didn’t realize till I got home I had a number of reflection shots. Was just enjoying the moment and trying to remember what seems like a million things I had known when the camera was in my hand. Talk about rusty. No problem, just have to get back in the saddle and work hard at the craft again.

I remember as a youth, this county being nothing but farms and a few small neighborhoods. I’m glad to see some still here and doing well. Remember to get your behind out to the county fair and learn something about it, before Columbia came calling. And the rest of urban sprawl. Not that there isn’t some beauty in the new parts of the county. But some has not changed for the better.

Hump Day – feeling peachy

Actually I’ve lost track of days of the week, being off and pretty much home bound for over 2 weeks. But the calendar says it’s Hump Day, so be it. And in some ways it does feel like crossing a hump. The last two days have been the first in weeks that I’ve felt somewhat comfortable in a number of ways. Yesterday I tried driving again. Kind of strange when something you do at a clip of over 100 miles a day easily, to none at all for weeks, I felt a bit rusty. But being a veteran of the Washington/Baltimore madness, it only took a few minutes of orientation. So with that milestone I’m feeling just peachy again. Even though my better half insist on rest and healing.

I had a co-pilot on my first drive out, just in case I had any issues, but the drive went fine. So after a good lunch and Snowball, I took the opportunity to get my better half a dozen roses to surprise her with when she got home from work. It’s the least I can do for a wonderful partner in life.

And it was a wonderful lunch. I had the Rockfish Fingers with corn fritters and coleslaw. Melissa had the crab pretzel and corn fritters also, and both meals were great. I like their menu because it always offers a good variety. The shrimp salad sandwiches are always spiced to my liking. The cream of crab soup is another one of my favorites.  My wife has always been a fan of the Bare Bones Special Salad. I’ve only tried the BB BBQ burger and Chili Burgers but both were great. Also the BBQ Pork and NY Strip steak sandwiches were tops.

The salmon, crab cakes and ribs have passed before me many times. But I just realized I’ve never tried a steak here. Well, we will have to make sure that it taken care of this year. And I already see the one I want. The Brewmiester Steak. Guess I’ll have to take the family next time to have my Son and Son in-law do a beer sampling/review. I’ve always enjoyed taking our parents and kids there so it covers the range of needs. And I’m guessing everyone knows about the bar side because that place always seems to be hoping whenever we go in.

Random thoughts for Wednesday July 8th, 2015

  • It seems like every commercial during the day is trying to take advantage of some older person for final arrangements or some kind of medical coverage. For middle-aged people we have the accident chasers or medical malpractice. And for the youth the promise of a great job through this or that online school.
  • It is better to be able to appreciate things in life, than have adversity set you back to make sure you have the proper perspective and respect for everything.
  • It was nice to pick up my camera again to FOCUS on an image instead of the pain and recovery issues. Even those will be there a while. I now have the ability and desire to shoot again.
  • I’m writing again. YES – lets see if I can sustain it again.

How long will the painting last

Along Rt 144 sits the old Friendly Inn. At least that is what I remember it as. And if I keep reaching back in the memory banks that mural around the top of the building was done shortly before it closed up I believe. So even when the sky isn’t painting the backdrop the mural provides the area texture. Actually this might be the next stop for the next strip mall of stores. For along Rt 40 they have just about used up all the free space, filled the old space and now have to move west along 144. At least that is what it feels like.

It seems like it has been vacant for 3-4 years now. A shame because I remember coming home this road for a number of years when I worked in Columbia. A much more peaceful drive than 29 at rush hour. Homewood to Folly Quarter to 144 and so on.

I wonder if my children will see anything like I have in terms of the pace of change in an area for over 5 decades in Howard County. Sometimes when I’m riding by these old places I say to myself, “what could I do with that?” I come up with all kinds of grand ideas and then go to work every day. And then the next thing you know these places disappear one by one. I guess we’re all just temporary residents.

Yesterday was a special day because it reminded me of what makes me happy in life. I got to spend it with my family. It was a great day and I thank them all for their time and gifts.

Patapsco Valley State Park – Grist Mill Trail

Took a family hike this morning. A walk for some of them but a hike for me. Took the camera along and thought I’d share a few shots from this morning. I believe I’ll start walking more each day after I feel better. For I helped move my Son yesterday before the hike this morning.

Great Whites

There are many Great White trees lurking in the forest. So as always, stay out of the water and get to the woods. Plus that water temp in Ocean City at 58-60 degrees that is a bit cold anyway for a dip.

Preakness Celebration Balloon Festival at Turf Valley

Wow, I thought for sure we would see these balloons skyward Saturday morning but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. I believe they said the wind. Meaning I guess some was needed because it felt still to me. But what I know about ballooning could be summed up in one word, NOTHING. I should have gotten my behind out there the other days but work and responsibilities stepped in. But Saturday was a nice tribute to Wounded Warriors early and families were out enjoying the warm spring morning.

I do know balloons make a fairly good photo op and judging by the number of photographers out there it wasn’t getting by many in the area. I took a good number of shots but would like to edit that mess. In the mean time here is a quick video below. Wish they would have flown, it seemed like a beautiful morning. Because there is a limit to the beauty of the balloon on the ground.

Stopped and had some lunch at Clyde’s in Columbia yesterday. Always liked Clyde’s despite the menu changes they have remained consistent. I miss a few of the old favorites but some new ones are very good also. It was a beautiful day out but just a little chilly. We took a few minutes to take in the view.

As I stood there I though back to when this lake in front of us was being made. I remember the land being cleared by these huge Cat’s and trucks up and down 29, 32 and 108 for years to come.

It was quite remarkable to grow up and watch farms and a few small towns and even smaller neighborhoods grow into what Howard County has become today.

In a few weeks I’ll have some time to sort through some of the old photos my family and I snapped of the county before it became the juggernaut it has become. I’ll see what I can remember and share here.

I’m hoping the weather improves this week so I can get out and do some photography on Sunday. Then again I need foul weather pictures also so its never a bad day to photograph.

A walk on a cool morning in Ellicott City

After a wonderful breakfast with my wife we decided to take a walk in Ellicott City this morning. I’m so sick of this cold and cool weather. The first thing I see as I walk under the railroad bridge is ice still dripping off the stones. But we soon emerged into the warm sun and it felt great for a change of pace. And while it was not the normal end of March day, it was showing signs of springing to life again.

I see in the news, a report from AAA that basically says teen distracted driving is involved in 58% of accidents they have. Well I think that is pretty good because its got to be near 100% for adults. OK, I’ll take 10% off that for booze. Using your smart phone or tablet or computer going down the road has got to be one of the worst things I’ve seen in my 4+ decades of driving.

Even police can’t do it and they are some very good drivers. I wish I had the camera on when a Montgomery county trooper I was next to and behind was weaving in and out of lanes while running something on his laptop the other day.  All of us see many instances of people either causing near misses or accidents from using the phone or texting or browsing while they THINK they are driving.

Actually as in most cases in life, statistics like the one released yesterday are meaningless when people are dying on the roads.

My first experience was (way back) when it was too expensive for companies to give everyone a cell phone which was really a brick. So they gave us beepers. My career has been one where I’ve been on-call a good bit of my life so having an electronic umbilical cord attached was done by my employers as soon as the technology was available. I never had a CB radio so about the most distracting thing in my car before that was the radio and that Hurst 4 speed.

Anyway you had a little beeper with a one line display of what might have been 15 numbers max. Just that little task of looking at that number while going down the road was enough to distract me I learned. Of course I then had to look for a pay phone to call back within 5 minutes and sometimes turn around and head back to work if I was on my way home or in the middle of any other activity. Can you believe they had pay phones at one time?

But I believe its more than just the act of looking at the device. Its the concentration that is taken away. I know that I can’t talk to work going down the road and troubleshoot a serious issue without complete concentration. And driving at the same time would be like putting a car on autopilot without an autopilot. Very stupid. And you know what, that is why I don’t believe that Hands Free really makes a substantial improvement.

And before you pass judgment on me as an inept nerd who can only do one thing at a time. I’m very good at multitasking. And I can and sadly say I have certainly mixed these activities in the past but I’ve been very good for a long time now and concentrate on driving only. Now I know some might say there is a lot of difference between saying hello honey, I’m 5 minutes from home and I’ll see you then in 10 seconds time vs. having an hour conversation going down the road. And that difference is that your chances of having someone step out in front of you or brake sharply are greatly reduced but what if your number comes up in those 10 seconds and your distracted?

All I know is a lot more people will be maimed and killed before we take action as a society change this behavior. And that is very bad. It’s leading to road rage and more unsafe driving. Its going to cost us all more for insurance. Its going to destroy lives. Driving is tough enough without distractions.

I’m always amazed at how many cars in this county (Howard County Maryland) have the bumper stickers that reads “Choose Civility”. Kind of ironic in a way. While out of our cars we would never think of killing someone, but while in our cars, we don’t give it a second thought.

I was waiting to get a haircut at Sal’s today and saw two things that made me sad. I watched a Mom who brought her two young sons in for a haircut pretty much have her attention in her smart phone. I saw the kids looking over at her, but her face down with the exception of telling Mike how short to cut her son’s hair. For I cherish the time I remember going for a haircut with my son and not doing anything else but watching and smiling.

Then I saw another Mother walking out of one of the stores through the lot with her young son with the phone in her ear. And she clearly wasn’t watching her child in a parking lot, especially a busy one like Village Green. Not that he did anything wrong but you could tell he could take a few wrong steps easily and she wouldn’t have noticed at all. Not that my attention with my own children has been the greatest at all times or that I’m slamming Mothers here today, Men are equally guilt I’m guessing.

And to top it off the ride home provided the weaving driver texting or playing a game but had that smart phone rocking along with their car. And yet another one face down with a green light. I did my standard, I counted to 3 and then hit the horn lightly to wake up the individual but not piss them off (that is a very fine line with some people). By the way I used to count to 5 but discovered that was just another way to waste 2 seconds because it didn’t matter to the person in front of me looking at the weather or stocks or news or blog or texting their girlfriend/boyfriend that the light was green.

All I know is I talk to my children about it. I try to not use the phone or apps or anything while I’m driving at all. And now I’ve written my first manifesto on the subject of technology and driving. There is a time and a place for those tools. Please make that choice wisely.

Who knows, I’ve been looking at those GoPro cameras and being I do a fair amount of traveling on some of the worst roads in the area, I might have to put some of the more entertaining drivers up here.

Snow shovels, back in the shed and Robins out.

Yep, its changing and I like it. Despite the cool day today and Tuesday ahead, I’m not the only one feeling like stretching my wings.

Won’t be long now for the Snowball stand in Woodstock to be opening. Can’t wait for my first large cherry snowball of the season.  It will certainly wash away the dog days of winter that covered the building.

Along Route 99 before Waverly fully invaded the Woods.  What a pleasant stretch of road before that development came. Now it’s almost a daily event where someone will pull out in front of you from a dead stop while you’re doing 50mph which is the speed limit. By the way, when I took the shot below I didn’t realize my car lights parked on the other side by the post office were illuminating the speed limit sign so well.
