Stones

No time to chat, I have to get out and mow. I’m not one of those retired people paying someone else to work on the homestead yet. I guess that day will come, but not this year.

I almost went right by this one when I noticed the stacking of stones. One an old bridge, one an art project.

Build it and they will come. Photo by Mike Hartley

Green

I had a few minutes on the way home and stopped for a few shots yesterday and everything came up green.

Be it the freshly cut hay.

Or the green tractor cutting it.

Or the Corvette that road by.

Now the tree line is green again.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Got a call from someone reading my mind.
  • It’s going to be a good Thursday. I can feel it.
  • BG&E was messing with my power at 3am. I’m thinking they thought I wouldn’t notice.
  • I love a manual transmission.
  • Funny thing, I’m seeing some Trump signs disappear.

Change

My dentist is retiring. This is not a good thing. I’ve been going to see him and his hygienist for decades. I do love going there also because it’s in my favorite little down right on Main Street. And I feel they took excellent care of my choppers. I’m not a fan of dentist/doctors, but these things made it a breeze.

Also, he is one of my favorite neighbors and has been for decades. So, a salute to my wonderful dentist Dr. Bob and his hygienist Dawn. Both have decided to retire and I’m very happy for each of them.

I believe in his post in FaceBook he indicated that he was the last of 6 dentists to occupy that same spot on Main Street in Ellicott City since 1900.

The green arch under the flag next to the Wine Bin is the entrance to DDS Robert Boman. Thanks again Bob.

Change 2

This getting old stuff isn’t going to be easy. They shell that carries around this twisted mind is feeling its age and in need of some maintenance and a change in style. I’m adjusting daily expectations and cutting back on how many hard physical things I do in a day.

No more working for hours straight or all day with just short breaks. I also need to slow the pace and be more deliberate. Slower down the stairs or hilly ground to reduce fall risks. To think before lifting something with the question, should I? Lots of little things that if I’m smart will allow me to keep upright and active.

At the same time, I’m going to increase my work on the things that are important to me. Speaking of which, I need to go charge another battery for today’s shooting.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Just saw another beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic from Ocean City. Too bad it was on a webcam. And it only lasted about 3 minutes before going behind clouds. But I SAW IT. Great way to start a day.
  • Try to make the best of life. That way when you get older the time you spend saying “I should have done this or that” will be at a minimum.
  • I hope the 3 days of rain we are going to get help solve this drought we have been in.
  • I was surprised by a friend’s news yesterday. It was a big decision for him. It probably is the right one for him.
  • Not getting all the sleep I need but I’m working on it.

Control

Control is an elusive thing at times. We think we have it, and it’s gone. Maybe it was an illusion that we never had any in the first place. Yes we have control over decisions we make. But a lot of times those are made within a constructed framework of options.

I felt like I regained some control of life when I retired. But when I watch the news, it reminds me of the late 60s when everything seemed out of control.

It’s good to let go of control. For instance, as your children grow up.

Control goes to a lot of people’s heads.

Those that think they have control might want to double check that assumption.

I’ve been told I’m out of control at times.

The only thing I control right now is when this post started and ended.

I guess the warmer temps spurred a little green in the fields, in rows. I wish I could see some green days ahead, but all I see are warning yellow and danger red ones.

So, I will venture out today and look for some positives in life and keep my spirits alive.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Things are beyond scary. Most just don’t recognize it.
  • Life puzzles are the most difficult ones to piece together.
  • I’m feeling good about today, even though it’s fairly packed.
  • That sunrise was a little late, about 7:40am, it had to clear that cloudbank near the horizon.
  • Wait until we all see what we have lost by the cuts to our government.

Oh yeah

I’m feeling inspired this morning. The day ahead outside is going to be a beautiful one. And if I’m lucky I will be spending more time outside today than yesterday. The camera did come out of its case, but I didn’t spend more than a few minutes shooting while trying to get a bit of exercise.

Photos by Mike Hartley

Another restless night. Just before 3 am the eyes opened wide, so I got up and started the day. Which means I’m either going to need a nap or I won’t be long for the Tuesday evening ahead. This is turning into the house that doesn’t sleep well.

For me there are obvious explanations for my nocturnal existence, but I worry about my better half. While she still gets a good amount of sleep it’s much more restless than in the past.

A fun tune with a great title just came on. Finish What Ya Started, by Van Halen is rocking my basement and at the same time reminding me to get my ass up and finish a few projects. So off I go.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Feeling relaxed is important, it’s just as important at the office, as it is at the beach.
  • Getting lost in music is good for the mind.
  • I’m guessing there is a more complex answer to why Trump continues to kiss Putin’s behind.
  • Envisioning the warm summer sand between my toes.

Good morning

Another chilly start this morning. How I look forward to the day where I can step on the back deck in only my gym shorts and feel the sun and warm breeze on my skin. Standing at the corner of my deck this is the view through the trees in the backyard in the mornings during summer.

The warm sun on a summer morning. Photo by Mike Hartley

There are some heavy rains followed by some strong winds forecast. I’m going to get a couple of posts finished today for early in the week in case we lose power. A common occurrence with winds in this area. It has improved but there are so many trees and lines that share the same space, it just happens.

Preparing posts for days in advance has been a seldom used practice in the past. Well, I’ll give it my best shot, because I want to keep my daily streak going. But first there is the now, present, this moment, right here. And right now, my better half isn’t sleeping well. That is not good. She excels at sleep. So, for her to be restless worries me.

Today I’m playing around with some close-up photography. There will be two subject matters. Shells and my family’s camera collection. Trying to learn more about light and angles. Practice makes something. I couldn’t say perfect because I’m too far from that goal.

A metal sculpture at a beach home we used to stay at. It was made of metal and about 5 feet across.

It’s another photo of mine I almost threw out, but having eaten some Maryland Blue crab yesterday I thought that would be disrespectful.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I’m motivated and disheartened at the same time. Strange combo.
  • Criminals much be jumping for joy at the thought of reduced law enforcement numbers to keep them in check.
  • I love putting new prints on the walls of our home.
  • I wonder what happens when Shock and Awe hits MAGA at home?
  • Time to prepare the home and electronics for storms. But as MacArthur said, “I shall return.”
  • Replace silence with a voice. Vive la Résistance

The Bird

My better half likes T Birds. The more recent ones though. But this is a classic and I love classics.

When cars had style. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was just doing some organizing and clearing some old clutter (photos) from the files and ran across this treasure. Not the best photo but the car. I just couldn’t bring myself to throw out a classic. I think it’s from the late to mid 50s if I were to guess.

I’m from the 50s myself so I guess I’m getting to be a classic. And like any classic I’m probably showing some signs of age. I’m not as fast as I used to be. I don’t start as easily. The shoes are a little worn. I’m so old I didn’t come with emergency flashers. See that little toy in the back window. We used to ride up there as kids.

I’ll be looking for some more classics to photograph soon. I can hear those car guys in there garages now getting ready to take the battery off the trickle charger and reconnect it for its periodic restart. Checking fluids and belts.

I can’t wait till they start to roll out on the first nice weather days of the spring. I was reading a article from Canon from photographer Larry Chen, on shooting cars and that has given me some new thoughts for the coming year.

And I can’t wait to attend my first show or catch some guys out on the street. Drive safe.

Random Thoughts of the Evening

  • My mother always taught me to try to look for the best in people. There has to be a limit on how long you have to search for it with some people though.
  • The NBA wouldn’t need an All Star weekend if they were playing competitive games throughout the season.
  • Sometimes when I get down I forget to remind myself my family has its health.
  • Speaking of the NBA. How many generations have to suffer through the Washington Wizards before someone develops a team worth watching?
  • Vive la Résistance – I think I’ll end each post with those words.

Satisfying

We had a wonderful lunch at Kelsey’s in Ellicott City today. Great service and food. My first wagyu smashburger along with stuffed mushroom and crab toast appetizers, were very tasty and something I’ll return for. Then we stopped at Brusters for a small ice cream. I love their chocolate raspberry truffle.

Blink. Photo by Mike Hartley

I had better get back on the treadmill this afternoon after that rich food. I’ve started 4 other posts today but finished none of them. A few were the kind where I had gotten on my high horse and I need to temper some of that.

Others I’m still finding other images to go along or I had the idea for an illustration to go along with it. So I’ll be back later between miles on the treadmill.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Getting notices of spring car shows and meets, might just be the thing that gives me the needed hope that I’ll make it through winter.
  • When you see mass resignations of good people who uphold justice, it may be time to start thinking about how to protect yourself. The rule of law is now being made up as we go along each day.
  • I’ve never subscribed to a streaming service before. But I’m thinking of trying Netflix. I hear it’s good for comedy specials.
  • I’m moving the few purchases I make off Amazon. I’m going to encourage my better half to do the same.
  • Happy Valentines Day

The Melt

Sun and warmer temps along with a very gusty wind will thaw things out a bit today. I had the chance to stop by Centennial Lake today and catch a few frames.

I keep telling myself I’m two thirds the way through winter. Photo by Mike Hartley

Despite the 50 degree reading the strong wind blowing across the snow and ice made it seem much colder.

I think I’ll make this one of my warm good weather walking loops this year. Photo by Mike Hartley

But some can brave that weather and run like the wind like our jogger below.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m finding my sweet spot. It’s between the candy and ice cream isles.
  • It’s possible someone is getting out in front of their skis.
  • I wonder if my optometrist knows the title of my blog?
  • The sound of wind is intimidating.

Local Social

A relaxing morning, a great lunch at Black Flag Social House Brewery Restaurant in Marriottsville yesterday. It was our first visit there and we will be back. We now have two local spots we love, Oscars Ale House in the Waverly Shopping Center and now Black Flag at the corner of Rt 99 and Marriottsville Road.

Yesterday’s meal was great. We had the Bourbon Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. This is an appetizer we have had at many establishments in this state and more. These were the best we could remember. The shrimp were very large and the bacon done just right. The sauce was great.

We each got a pizza, one Shroom’d with Roasted Shiitake, Cremini, Maitake, Truffle Oil, Fontina, Everything Bagel Spice for my better half and I had the Carnivore pizza that had House Sauce, Pepperoni, Sausage, Bacon, Ricotta & House Cheese Blend.

It had been a while since I had finished a pizza by myself. This was no problem. The problem I faced which I hadn’t had in ages was to save the last slice for later because it was so good or finish it. There wasn’t a long thought process before it was gone.

The beer and wine lists looked like they could keep many happy. I’ll bring my son next time for the beer review. I can’t wait to try out the outdoor deck seating when it warms up. It’s not a huge memu but it has a great number of things I like that are still to be tried. I’m sure we will visit again very soon and next time I’ll try not to come in famished and pick up the camera before the fork or fingers.

Have a great morning.

Up and Out

Good timing this morning in taking the car to the garage for a tire issue. Caught the sunrise off Woodstock Road going towards Route 99. On the way home it was in the clouds already.

The phone camera is good in a pinch. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m not enjoying the cold, but I am enjoying getting out early in the day. I think I’ll try to make a habit of it this year. I’m always up early, but this home is so comfortable it’s hard to leave it.

Photography Journey Day 68 – 1/8/25

You may have noticed I skipped a few days/weeks update. It’s not that I’m not editing, shooting, uploading, downloading, admiring my new monopod, reading or unsuccessfully trying some new settings. I’m just not disciplined as I need to be with updates, so I’m hoping back on the wagon.

This morning I’m reading Street Photography Tips from StreetsOfNuremberg.com – this is an area of my photography that I need to practice much more of. So hopefully some more work will be shown here soon.

Also working on finishing up the holiday prints for family. That will be another 50 easily. Then upload the high-def batch to the family vault.

There is a good chance I’ll get out and do some more snow shooting today. I’ve already stepped out back and shot some snow drift patterns. Trouble is I have one of those sinus headaches going strong.

Uncle

The second shoveling got to me this morning. The wind really blew a lot back in the driveway, and there was fresh snow from last night to clear. I began the shoveling around 5:15am and finished about 7am. It wasn’t quite daylight yet and sunrise was still 30 minutes off.

I took a shot of the plow going up our street. I was fumbling for my glasses and had in on manual focus from something I was doing inside last night. I tried to adjust but without the glasses I just shot. Sorry for the focus problem on shot one.

Thank you Howard County workers. Photo by Mike Hartley

I took a walk trying to stretch out a bit. I was smart enough to take the camera with me. But I was a bit concerned because it still is icy and the side of the roads are still deep.

Photos by Mike Hartley

It’ didn’t feel as cold as the temps indicated. I guess I dressed correctly for the weather. Though carrying the camera with bare hands that last 30 minutes was a bit chilly.

If it was just a little deeper. Photo by Mike Hartley

Up the street I went where one neighbor still has some holiday decorations out.

Maybe I’ll look at one of these in the future. Photo by Mike Hartley

A couple of locals had the snowblowers fired up. This one above on Woodstock at the Snowball Stand.

I’m not sure what all these are for but there is a 30K gallon water tank underground here I believe. Photo by Mike Hartley

I always am looking for color when nature isn’t providing it. She was trying but that sun wasn’t up yet.

As the Beatles would say “Here Comes the Sun” which is a good song I should go listen to.

I’m going to start getting out for the sunrise more often. I’ll see how good I am at that by posting the beginning of the day here.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’d rather be walking in the hot sand in flip flops than cold snow in boots.
  • There is a beautiful quiet to snow. We all have heard it.
  • Taking a swing at some abstract art for the first time. It’s interesting.
  • Got an important meeting today.

In the air

You can feel the coming snow in the air. Later tonight as I’m shoveling, I’ll be feeling it for real. Been a long time since I’ve had that youthful feeling in snow. If it’s deep enough, I’ll go for making a snow angel. The snowboard of my sons and the disk will stay in the shed.

Actually, I’m looking forward to being out in it early this morning. I love starting the day anywhere from 2-4 am. This seems to be the sweet spot my body and mind like to start. It isn’t the same cycle other family or friends are on but I’ve been marching to others schedules for decades and now I can make my own.

But it will be good timing for the snow. If it starts around 10 about half of it will be down by 3 or 4am and I’ll be out with the shovel. I’ll probably be helping an elderly neighbor or two later in the day so at least I’ll have mine done early and some time to rest and catch my breath.

I saw these geese coming in for a landing to join their friends already on the pond. The clouds are rolling in and soon all air traffic will take a pause as the storm goes by.

Landing gears please. The Woodstock Airport is still open. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Always depressing taking the tree out after the holidays.
  • I’m having to listen to the Maryland basketball game on the radio because its being streamed.
  • There are some things that leave lasting impressions in life. Most of them I smile about, some not.
  • Felt good to exceed my exercise goal today.
  • Looking for some positive energy. I’m just not working hard enough for it yet today.

Yes and No

I was searching through some old shots in Ellicott City and ran across this car shot of a Plymouth Prowler. I almost just trashed it, but I continued to look at it. One it’s a convertible which always interests me. Second the throwback styling also caught my eye. The colors they put on this were also very stunning.

But I never investigated one as a car I’d like to own even though they do attract me. So, this morning I saw why this vehicle failed to catch on. A weak motor and only an automatic transmission. The execs at Plymouth should have had their butts canned for those two decisions alone.

You don’t build a car that looks like that, put some meaty tires in the back and have it be a SLUG. It’s 0-60 is 7.1 seconds. My stock 2016 Miata does it in 5.9. And in the quarter mile I read its 15.3 to the Miata 14.5 seconds.

It should be illegal to build something that looks that good but can’t do a burnout. Sorry, I never knew before why it didn’t have more appeal till, I did some reading today.

This one below is a beauty, and I love his plate “SURREAL” and it’s a rag top with an older couple like we are cruising on a beautiful summer day so I won’t end with negative vibes, but on a positive thought. I wonder if a Hellcat Hemi fits in there.

Love the styling. Photo by Mike Hartley

Hideout

I wouldn’t have seen him, but that rack moved ever so slightly. He was napping in the back again. I’m going to make like this guy, and be inconspicuous on New Years Eve.

This is the only shot I took yesterday that wasn’t of our (delayed) family Christmas together. Those 80 shots will just be shared with family.

So I’ll get out today and try to do a bit better in capturing images for the sharing category.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Trying is succeeding.
  • Wind and cold = intolerable.
  • The last days of limited conflict are in our midst.
  • There’s a lot of tempting sweets in the house. I’m trying to moderate, but I’m weak.
  • My kids probably get sick of me telling them how much I love them. I know my father must have said it, but I haven’t a memory of him saying it. So I might overdo it for that reason. Plus I really do love them.

What would I do today

A free day except for a few chores and cooking later. But that is later. I passed out at the start of the MNF game and woke at 1:15 am. Now I’m wide awake and don’t feel like going to bed and looking at the ceiling.

Plus, I already turned on some inspirational music and we are Rocking & Rolling here at camp Woodstock. I’ll lift some weights to dissipate some of this energy that’s building. In the meantime, I’m continuing to upload images.

Around 5 am I thought I’d go get a few fog shots before sunrise. Those are below from Ellicott City. I caught a nap and now I’m ready to roll again. Not sure what I’ll shoot the rest of the day, but I will get out again.

I’ve got to force myself to get out each day. It’s pretty easy for me to become a homebody. And retirement even makes that easier.

I kind of like being out early in the morning before sunrise. Reminds me of old times when I was a nocturnal creature.

With the fog everything was a shade of grey, black or white. But every once in a while you can spot some color.

This morning it wasn’t too bad. About 41 degrees I think I saw on the dash. I’ll be dressing warmer later this week again it looks like. Mornings in the teens and 20s forecast.

All I know is that I have to live more in the moment and today has been a good use of that theory. But I have a lot of work to do on my fog photography. I think I’ll look for some examples for inspiration the next time it moistures up like it did today.

Capture Time

There are many reasons I love photography. But that aspect of capturing a point in time really is special.

Photography Journey Day 36 – 12/6/24

The sun was out, but I also heard that wind and stepping outside I felt very COLD. So to hell with that nonsense. Sorry, I know I should be out shooting but I have a severe dislike of this weather.

So, another series of shots is planned for another old camera later tonight. A Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model made between 1949 – 1961. Maybe I’ll shoot that other old Kodak and several Polaroids.

As I was doing some editing tonight, I ran across this street scene from Ellicott City. The location is in the photo. It’s not every day you can pull a rabbit (left) out of a photo.

Oh I’m longing for summer already and it’s still early December. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

The Canon printer has been humming along the last few days. And I hope to finish that pack of 8×10 off this evening.

More Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My mind says I could still run through a wall. Good thing the mind isn’t in total control anymore.
  • The best photo I’ve taken is the one I have yet to take. It could be tonight or tomorrow if I only pick up the camera.
  • Make someone happy and repeat.
  • One-man bands are better if they can play a lot of different instruments.
  • Speaking of bands, Aerosmith just doesn’t sound right unless the volume knob is at 10. Someone somewhere is asking “what is a volume knob”

Well as RUSH would say, it’s time to Roll The Bones.

Friday Follies

Fridays are still a lot of fun. People in general are in better spirits and optimistic about the coming weekend. I am also even though every day is a weekend now. The few shots in this post are from yesterday. Today was indoors and filled with logistics. Medical and car insurance to start with.

Shot this while waiting at the light at Frederick Road and Rt 40. I’m not sure if its a home or business to be honest. I do find the design and paint interesting. Photo by Mike Hartley

Good thing, a job isn’t in the way of all this progress. My better half started to remove the Thanksgiving decorations and began the process for the next holiday. I’m trying to figure out where the Xmas tree in the basement is going this year. I’ve been moving furniture around trying to maybe keep it out of the path of the young ones.

It’s berry cold outside. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I found the right spot and will begin the assembly of the artificial tree. We get a real one for the upstairs sometime this coming week.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Some people are just angry at heart. Others are being taught to be angry and that is troubling.
  • It’s nice when friends thank you.
  • Plans are good, actions are better.
  • Started another woodworking project today, for my daughter.
  • It’s going to be a good night for creativity.

Cool it

A cool start to December but I hope to heat this month up.

Photography Journey Day 31 Recap – 12/1/24

I didn’t pick up a camera yesterday. Only a few snaps with the phone. It was kind of a personal and rest day. I think I saw the intro to Sunday Night Football and that is the last thing I remember. Both my mind and body checked out early.

Went to a Maryland basketball game yesterday with my son and 2 best friends. A quick trip to 3 Brothers in Greenbelt Plaza after the game and than a snowball on the way home with my son. We visited for a bit and then I edited about 30 images and uploaded the shots of my son’s family that he wanted.

So it wasn’t a productive day for new images but it was a great day for my spirit. Back to shooting today.

Yes it was cold. Most were purchasing hot chocolate, but we took the snowballs home and ate them in the warmth of the living room.

Saturday Shiver

Windy and cold is not a good start to a Small Business Saturday. But it’s sunny so we will go with that plus and ride out the day with some warm beverages and food. With the feast on Thursday and leftovers yesterday one would think I’ve built up a little insulation. But I’ve done fairly well on the weight front.

I miss that feeling of youth where you could run all day without a second thought. That energy isn’t instinct anymore. I’m thinking it feels like mind over matter at this point. That’s why I’m trying to strengthen the mind as well as the body.

I’m trying to get that intensity back. Not the work type, that youthful energy and mindset. It’s hard to grasp again in your senior years. Music from my youth sometimes helps with that inspiration. I know I use music to try to keep in shape now.

I need to see those possibilities and images from my mind of decades ago. I’m looking for that path in my head that leads to endless creative thoughts and ideas that once flowed like a river. They seem to be farther and farther apart now. Or come in great rushes that I can’t keep up with.

Actually, shot this a couple mornings ago. While my mind is willing today, the body is in pause for a few hours this morning. I’m hoping for an afternoon ride though.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ll take good memories over material things.
  • That was one painful night.
  • I was less than thrilled with the winter (chapstick and lotion) season starting early this year.
  • Taking the weather outside a minute at a time. Amazing how many curse words I can use per minute.

Recap

I just realized I was a few days behind on a few things. It’s a good weekend to catch up and get back in step.

Photography Journey Day 28 & 29 Recap – 11/29/24

I started this last night and fell asleep. New shooting has been limited but progress is good on the editing and uploading front.

Grazing in my backyard again yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m going to brave the cold temps today and try to get some new images. Concentrating on some of the early Xmas decorations so I can start the month of December off with some seasonal spirit. I found a map of some homes in the county with light displays.

I’ve got to finish a few pieces that I’ve been lingering on in the workroom. Mostly for the family so I really should complete those. This one below is just a freehand cut I did from this shell as an example. I haven’t decided how to use them yet. They are pretty good size. The shell is 6.5 inches long and the board I cut is 11.5 inches long.

I thought about burning the wood a bit which gives an effect I’ve seen look interesting. But the grain of the wood seems to match the shell’s flow, and I might emphasize that. I should have taken a shot without the shell on top.

I should have used a thinner piece of wood. Live and learn. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve started carvings of two other shells, much more detailed but also decent sizes. But today I will try to finish a Dolphin and Horse for my granddaughter.

Doors – round 2

Wow, thank you for the feedback and welcome to the ThursdayDoors last week. Like I said, I hope to be a regular contributor. I’m just starting to wade through the previous posts in this area and I’m stunned by the wonderful images.

This first shot below isn’t so much a unique door but the reflection of the crosswalk signs, one on each side of the street reflected in each of the two doors with the arrows pointing opposite directions. I’ll have to go back one morning and see if I can capture it without the truck reflection also.

I like this series below better, but it wasn’t as positive a door as the one above. The next few shots are of the old Howard County Jail.

Here is the history of this building and site from Wikipedia which goes back to the 1800s.

Tired but happy

Tuesday, I put in a good effort on several fronts. Mainly on the personal one but productive in hobbies also. Didn’t sleep well again last night but made the best use of being up.

Photography Journey Day 26 Recap- 11/26/24

I almost forgot to charge the cameras before leaving yesterday for some shopping with my better half. Shopping isn’t something I do much, but I thought I’d check out Staples being I’m considering moving the photo ink and paper purchasing I’ve done through Amazon to someone else. I’m not a fan of J.B. His x wife on the other hand seems to be the generous side of the family.

I’ve done some reading on food photography and holiday shooting. I hope to put the new camera to the test.

This weekend forecast and beyond is for much colder temps which will test my internal will to get out each day and shoot part of the county.

Like these two, I’ve stood on this bridge with very good friends on more than one occasion having discussions about life and business. Photo by Mike Hartley

Tuesday Thoughts

Chipping away each day and seeing more and more progress feels good. It inspired more effort and results. Even short bursts of work in the workroom or editing or picking up the camera in the middle of other tasks.

One of the things I wanted to work on was breaking up some of the text and photos with some graphics. So, you might be seeing some more in the coming months while I decide on what I like. Sorry about experimenting on the fly, but that is the way we roll at this age.

I bet this text is going to be too small to read on a cell phone. It’s almost too small to read on the computer. I’ll look later. Anyway, I was working on a logo for the Howard County Photos of the Day and this was my first attempt above.

Don’t forget to support small businesses on November 30th and not just then but throughout the year.

Tuesday Thunder

Wow, an early morning thunderstorm in late November. Weather never fails to surprise me. So, my motivation to get out and look for a sunrise is damping as I hear the raindrops hitting the window. But I will get out today and walk and shoot because that is what I do.

I probably overshoot sunrises and sunsets anyway. I found a shot I took earlier this week of a storefront window in Ellicott City that I’ll have to revisit. The traffic was so heavy I couldn’t get a shot without a reflection of a car in the window. In some ways though I like it. Where the front of the car is overlapping the barrels on the bottle. It almost looks like a cork because the white SUV has the shape of a bottle when I squint at it. Maybe I’m just tired.

It’s 5 O’clock somewhere. Photo by Mike Hartley

I should get moving though because it will clear up outside by noon, and I need to get some fresh images and stories.

Random Thoughts of the Day – so far

  • I was getting off track for a bit and consuming too many sweets. I got my mind right again but I heard their voices from the pantry.
  • The Maui Invitational wasn’t the same without Bill Walton this year. While not my favorite announcer, he was colorful as hell and always that wonderful smile and warmth. There were still some great close games which he would have gone bonkers over.
  • Rumors of a cold front coming. Chances of me getting an attitude increasing.
  • Some people make me laugh, but not the funny ha ha laugh. The shake your head confused or disgusted laugh.

Another day down

It didn’t feel like a down day so I’m not sure why I picked the title “Another day down.” I’m kind of feeling up about the day and the evening ahead.

Photography Journey Day 25 – 11/25/24

I took a few minutes to shoot today between appointments. Also did some editing and printing this evening with the football game and some Rock n Roll in the background. I’m working on a plan for tomorrow’s shooting.

But first some rest so I can make the most out of Tuesday.

Out and About

A good evening all, a busy day but productive one. Took the car in for service on a air bag recall notice. No fuss, no muss, in and out in 2 hours. Thank you, Catonsville Mazda and George. Did a few minutes shooting and then home for a bite to eat and out again for a haircut.

Howard County Photos of the Day – Given it’s the Holiday season I thought I’d try to capture some holiday spirit from both our merchants and homeowners. This one is from Main Street in Ellicott City of Sweet Elizabeth Jane storefront this morning.

I was up well before sunrise and looking for it but my morning appointment for the car made me abandon that hope for a shot, so I got this one of the fading moon and two planes crossing the sky above the horizon line before sunrise.

Always up early. Not always out. Photo by Mike Hartley

Oh crap, I see we have some rain in the forecast tonight. Out I go to put the cover on the car. I need a garage. That is the first thing I’m getting built if I hit the lottery. Oh, that’s right, you have to play to win, and I don’t.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Trying to remember to have proper posture. But after years of slacking in that area change is hard.
  • I miss having a pet.
  • A sad day in our country’s history today. Not the first and not the last. But certainly, one that could have been avoided if people did their job as effectively as those who defended the Capitol on January 6th.
  • Feeling good about the days work. And I have an evening to go.

Letting it come to me

I’m trying to relax. Trying to think like a youngster and see the world as something unique and special. Wondering what each object is. Seeing things in nature for the first time. Looking at the world from a much lower angle.

Photo Journey Day 24 Recap – 11/24/24

When I started in photography in the late 1960s, there was of course the shooting. Pretty much as it is today except for the advancement in the cameras and accessories. But then it was off to the darkroom for film developing and then to the enlarger for prints and then to the sink and trays. I believe it was the early 70s when I got an enlarger. Before that, it was send your film out for processing and prints. No control there.

Again, today we have a lot of time spent in processing after the shoot. Just through the computer instead of the darkroom. I know I could do better with Photoshop or Lightroom or another post processing tool. But then I’m not out shooting.

Like yesterday, I’m going through this last month and editing what I want to upload to my photo site. I have the application that came the Nikon. A basic editing tool called NX Studio. I try to keep my adjustments to a minimum unless I’ve really screwed up a shoot. And that happens to us rookies. The cost and the fear of getting lost in those advanced tools makes me hesitant to purchase and use them.

The other thing about those tools. They can manipulate reality easily. And it’s very tempting to do because I’ve used them professionally at times in my career. But working in the field surrounded by journalist and photojournalist integrity was always first.

This was possible back in the days of processing film and making prints also, but it was much harder. One photog showed me how he could put a baseball before a batter swinging that had already missed the ball. Then he showed me a shot of the same batter getting a hit just the moment before contact with the ball close to the fake print he made. They were close and through newspaper reproduction nobody would have been the wiser. I remember saying something to the effect of how that wouldn’t be right and feels so wrong inside to publish a fake. Not to mention the standards in place against that. But it really does come down to a lot of self control back then and even more so today.

I guess that is why I shoot closer to the photojournalism rule than artistic goals. Nothing against that, I admire many beautiful works like that. And I have dabbled in some special effects but instead of putting Photo by Mike Hartley I’ll label it Illustration by Mike Hartley. That is just my personal style and choice.

While I do crop images from time to time I don’t do so to change the meaning of the image. So all these words are the cover for a lame day of shooting on my part. But the camera comes out today. That means I won’t punish you with more bable later and hopefully some good images to fill the space.

Memories

I was walking Main Street in Ellicott City earlier this week when I came across this storefront window. There isn’t as much window shopping now unless you consider that substance that makes up your computer screen as a window.

Kaur’s Boutique Collection is the store if my memory is correct. Photo by Mike Hartley

If memory serves me right my Mother used to design and do big store windows for Macy’s in Philly many decades ago. She told me it used to be the thing for people to come downtown to look at Christmas and other holiday displays.

I wish I had her artistic talent.

Maybe I’ll be on the lookout in her memory for the unique displays this holiday season.

Keep it rolling

Let me sit and pound some drums, I feel like Neil Peart. Hand me that guitar and let me rip like Eddie Van Halen and duck walk like Angus Young. Move out the way, I want to dance like Gene Kelly.

I can’t believe it’s Friday already. I felt a little inspired this early morning. I worked on some photo editing and took the cover off the printer and got going on a few more display prints for the basement.

And then it went and got cold and snowing.

Photography Journey Day 21 recap – 11/21/24

Yesterday I worked on some editing and organization. Did a few uploads to the photo site and participated in a new photo group blog called ThursdayDoors.

We were busy with childcare, and I didn’t take advantage of that opportunity but I’ll get another shot at it this coming Thursday when the family gathers for Thanksgiving.

I shot these at the Marriottsville Bridge crossing the South Branch of the Patapsco River.

Photos by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve gotten a little lax lately and put on a few pounds. Time to shed those before Thanksgiving.
  • Dr Oz. Is that a name or philosophy?
  • Starting to incorporate walnuts into the diet more.
  • I would say “where does the day go” but I’m afraid another one might disappear.

Out each day

Sometimes I feel selfish devoting time to my hobbies. I think that is one reason I don’t mind waking up early because I’m not taking time away from our relationship because she is sleeping. I’m excited to get busy with my hobbies and I’m going to accelerate my morning activities.

Photography Journey Day 20 – 11/20/24

The weather will present some opportunities in the next few days. Some rain tonight and high winds on Thursday and Friday. Of course, high winds also make me nervous about losing power with all those trees surrounding the power lines.

A couple errands let me be out and about today. I don’t know what it is, but I’m drawn to the Patapsco River lately. I’ve always enjoyed shooting around water. I’m going to try some trails this weekend that I haven’t ventured through before.

South Branch

I took a drive down Henryton Road today on the Howard County side to the South Branch of the Patapsco River. What a beautiful weather day. Always nice to take advantage of sunshine.

Another curvy and twisty road downhill to the water.

I’m trying to get a feel for the Patapsco so when I go hiking along it I know best spots to go shooting.

Good Start

A fairly productive Monday so far and lots of time left for more work.

Photo Journey Day 18 – 11/18/24

This post is looking a little grey even though its light on words. I have one more batch to edit from shots I took at the end of Henryton Road. I’ve been sharing them with a Patapsco group on Facebook and gotten some interest so I’ll keep trying to do my best to see if I can pick up some tips from others on spots to shoot from or trails to hike.

I’m getting better at hiding from them. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m spending more time on WordPress learning today than photography which I don’t like but I really need to pick up my game here with this tool also.

Style

As I was leaving the wonders of my nature walk along the Patapsco River yesterday, I saw a man made wonder and snapped my last two frames of the day.

I thought to myself this looks good coming and going. I love the style of the old cars. Things today look so much the same from one manufacturer to another with some rare exceptions. Even trucks have all taken on the same features.

Purple People Eater.. Photo by Mike Hartley

Styling is important. Not just in cars but in this forum also. I haven’t found my style as a photographer yet. I’ll probably be searching for it for a while being I’m still learning the craft.

A rear window you can see out of. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve got to bring more style to this site also. At least I’m getting a better balance of images to words.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel I’m always charging a battery of some sort. I must keep in mind to keep my own recharged.
  • I see some bad signs on the horizon. But I’m not worried because I know where I will stand.
  • We went right into the Medicare commercial barrage from the political one. And here I thought we were going to catch a break.
  • A good day for indoor photography. But I will venture out sometime for a rain shot.

Pretty good Wednesday

Any day that the doctor says “your all good, see you next year” it’s a good day. It was also a very quick appointment and NO WAIT. I should have got a lottery ticket today. Now if I can get the same reaction from some other doctors I see I’ll be dancing in the rain.

So onto the enjoyment of the day.

Photography Journey Day 13 – 11/13/24

Took my first bird shot with the new camera around sunrise this morning in my backyard. This task will serve a dual purpose. I’ll try to learn the types of birds along the way.

Not sure about this one. An Eastern Bluebird or female Mountain Bluebird.

After the doctor’s visit I was short on daylight so I headed to a spot near the home. The Patapsco River where it crosses under Woodstock/Old Court Road is about a mile down the road. The shot below is standing on the bridge over it.

I can see clearly now, the leaves have gone. Photo by Mike Hartley

Of course, I had to go down by the water, bad knee and all, and get a shot of the bridge I was on.

Crystal clear water. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll make sure to hike down here when the temps get colder and the ice starts to form.

It doesn’t look cold yet. Photo by Mike Hartley

What I learned today.

  • Hiking with my new camera is a lot easier than the big Nikon.
  • Even though you’re out in the wild doesn’t mean wildlife will be there with you.
  • I’m going to have to start taking my tripod with me more.
  • You can only capture your next shot if you’re out trying to get it.

Tuesday

The day didn’t start well with Verizon’s internet service being down for a few hours early this morning while I was trying to work. I do have a limited backup. But getting support from Verizon isn’t a pleasant process.

Photography Journey Day 12 – 11/12/24

I know it’s not winter yet but I’ll complain anyway. I don’t like cool or cold wind and it was blowing good today. The few leaves left on the trees were mostly on the ground today.

In my continuing effort to bring the best parts of Howard County out in pictures. I drove along the north edge of the county on River Road which borders the South Branch of the Patapsco River. That has some wonderful views in all seasons. Oh, there is one shot of the back of some buildings in Sykesville where I pick up River Road.

Lock and Key

I spent a few minutes watching both the sunrise and the sunset on some of the Ocean City webcams today, what a treat. Tomorrow I’ll get out and catch one here.

Lock and Key is a song by RUSH that came to mind when I was editing this photo below. I’ve never attached a lock to a bridge. If I do I think I’ll do a personal etching on it.

Photography Journey Day 11 – 11/11/24

  • Found the Neutral Density filter for my new camera. Might give it a shot tomorrow.
  • Made a few more 8x10s for the beach project.
  • Assembled some props for studio work.
  • Went out for an hour of shooting
  • Upload 200 images to the site.

Daniels Dam

Good evening and welcome to a Friday evening. One I’ll spend by myself, not feeling social. But I am hard at work on images and thoughts to transfer into action.

Photography Journey Day 8 – 11/8/24

This is a nice relaxing spot I like in Howard County. It’s very small and only has parking for maybe a dozen cars and they will tow your behind if you park illegally. And usually, it gets crowded quickly. I haven’t walked many of the trails but I hope to this coming year.

I used to take lunch down there some days when I worked in Ellicott City decades ago.

I read earlier this summer that the dam is slated for removal. Not sure of the timeframe for that but this one looks a bit more complicated than some of the others that were removed.

The water still looks inviting. But you could feel the coolness as you got closer to it.

Half the fun of this site is the long twisty Daniels road leading to the dam. Just be careful on those turns please, lots of them are blind.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s almost SOUP Season.
  • For a bit I was wondering if a Costco membership was worth it. I believe it is.
  • If today was the last 70+ degree day with the sun out this year I’m glad I took advantage of it and put the top down for a ride.
  • I could probably live without the land line but it’s a nostalgia thing.

Discovering

What a wonderful Wednesday! Exercise in some warm weather, a ride with the top down on the car, and a meal out. An evening of basketball and photograph work.

Photography Journey Day 6 – 11/6/2024

The new camera in hand and out I went. Boy do I need some time to get familiar with all these controls. And I look forward to spending that time learning and perfecting my skills with it.

Hopefully its a step up in my future image quality. Photo by Mike Hartley

This shot below is special because it looks so normal and I waited for it to look like this. I saw these two walking down the dock towards this bench. You might not pick up on it but that is a walking cane folded up next to her on the seat. The young lady looking at her smartphone had just assisted walking her down on this sunny day.

And though she is sight impaired, she seems to be the one enjoying this beautiful day but looking up at the building skyline and feeling the sun. I smiled when I shot this and I smiled when I came across it to edit it. For it reminds me to think beyond limitations that life may place on you and enjoy the moment.

Photography and People

Sometimes people don’t care to be photographed. Funny how it only happens when I’m using my big Nikon though. He’s probably unaware there are video cameras watching him more closely than I was. Actually I was just going for a shot of the train and bike by itself sitting there.

The look. Photo by Mike Hartley

First off I don’t photograph to make people look bad intentionally. Or even by accident like this but I do run into this more with the conventional camera because its so obvious. For all he knows I could be zoomed in on the banner, light and bell at the top of the train front.

Maybe he was just having a bad day that the scowl wasn’t for me. Whatever it was I hope the bike ride cured it.

I’m going to try my hand at shooting more people and hopefully not piss anyone off. Guess I’ll use that sneaky cell phone.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Workroom is the cleanest its been in a few decades. I’m pretty dirty though.
  • Back to listening more and talking less.
  • Trying a new merchant. Fingers crossed.
  • Spending the day learning and the night shooting.

Beginning Again

The talking has been done and time for some serious action. I was feeling good about some of my efforts in October. Probably my strongest shooting month this year by far. Also one that I stepped up printing efforts and finally got backup of the backup. And I’m moving images into my portfolio faster than in previous months.

But I’m still capable of much more and it’s time to get to it.

So where to on my photo journey of the day?

I thought about photographing the leftover Halloween candy but that would tempt me to pick up another piece so I nixed that idea.

Good old Kodak Film and GE flashbulbs. Photo by Mike Hartley

The rule of the month is to get a camera in my hands as often as possible and shoot shoot and shoot some more. So while I was out walking the neighborhood I grabbed a few shots. I saw this redness gleaming from a few doors down the street so off I went.

And this nest which was exposed when the leaves fell from this tree. I believe that could be a bald faced hornets next if my past experience is correct.

There is a lot to be said for just walking around. You meet people, you experience nature, you breathe clean air, your body and mind feel better.

The tree is nice but the Grand National under that cover is also a thing of beauty. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think it was 2007 when I got the Kodak Z812 IS and it’s been a workhorse. Sometimes the battery doesn’t take a full charge. Even when it does the zoom and autofocus seem to be operating slower and slower. I’m about to abandon this old digital camera. It’s seen its day and many beyond its years. It’s a little point-and-shoot model that was a steal.

It still works well and I’ll use it to train the grandchildren. But time for me to move on to the next one. I will say it’s been a great tool and having the alternative to the heavy and bulky Nikon body and lens is great in certain situations.

It’s provided many wonderful shots in my portfolio and will take a spot on the counter of old family cameras. So its time to make a decision on its replacement and place the order.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Learning how to use light is a lot of fun.
  • I forgot how much I liked Nestles Crunch bars.
  • Vegetable egg rolls and Chick fill A dipping sauce isn’t a bad combination.
  • Might try my hand at doing some electrical work. And then a lightbulb went off and I thought better of it.

Hit the wall

Just ran out of energy yesterday. A few hours on the road and several with a 2-year-old have sapped my resources. That and not sleeping well of late.

But no complaint here, it was a fun day and special day. I’m hoping for the epic comeback by the NY Yankees in the World Series. Maybe the phrase “hope springs eternal” is something to hang my hat on.

Time and pressure. Photo by Mike Hartley

In the next few days, I hope to spend some time behind the wheel and make some stops for fresh images to share here and elsewhere.

So a good morning to you all, and let’s start having some fun on this wonderful Wednesday.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My son and daughter-in-law made my day yesterday. I’ll explain at another time.
  • Are you sure Halloween hasn’t passed yet? I’m certainly eating a lot of candy.
  • An interesting week ahead. Or is it just the preliminaries?
  • I’m going to de-stress by getting outside in this nice weather. A snowball sounds good also.

Life is good

I love their Life is Good tee shirts. They are so soft and I like the sayings and artwork on them. But I was thinking life is good this morning because I’m seeing opportunities to grow and expand my hobbies.

I’ll be replacing an old camera soon. I’m giving Canva a try to see if I can get more graphics into the blog. Also, stuff for the grandchildren to get them into the arts. Writing is becoming more fluid now. I’m not sure why, but it’s flowing with ease.

Life is really good because we are expecting another grandchild and it was announced this morning that it will be a girl. Lots of happy people on a Facetime call this morning.

It’s been a lazy Sunday. Did some quick shopping for a toy donation this morning. A BBQ at lunch and then some couch time because I was feeling a bit weak.

I haven’t photographed as intended and I’ve still got most of my workout ahead of me. At least the first two miles are in the books.

Feeling it

The body isn’t cooperating today but I’m powering through it and moving on. Had a wonderful lunch at a restaurant we hadn’t tried yet in Howard County. Hudson Coastal Raw Bar and Grille in Maple Lawn which is a couple of stones throws from where I grew up. The southern part of the county.

Anyway, this was my backup Seafood place to go because I just didn’t feel like making the drive to Annapolis today. Maybe next month.

It was a great meal and we will be returning again. It was a treat day for us. Oysters Rockefeller, Calamari, Crabcake and Shrimp salad sandwiches. Double graham cracker crust Key Lime pie.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love the lyrics by RUSH in the song “Roll the Bones”
  • My children have hundreds of notes, cards, and more emails that are signed “Love Dad”. I have two postcards from my Dad signed “Dad”. They are among my most prized possessions.
  • Our furnace has been cleaned again and is ready for the winter season. At least one can hope.
  • Another day to escape.

Convertible Advantage

I can have my eyes on the road and still capture an image or two.

Not only that feel the warmth of the sun like I used to on the motorcycle. And I don’t have to wear a helmet on the road. I’m keeping my helmet just in case I ever take the car to the track. Shot these along Rt 99.

Coming or Going

We all get so busy that it’s hard to tell which way we are headed. Are we coming or going? Thankfully my pace has slowed a little on the multitasking front. I was a clown trying to juggle too many balls for a lot of years. But now I have time to pull over and capture these two grazing in the fall season. Life is good.

I like the way I’ve turned the day around so far. Started out not feeling that hot but worked through some mental and physical things.

Back outside today but it looks like I’ll have to dress differently. My friends are already riding me about the cold coming for me. I told them I’d see them again in April of 2025.

I’m making some prints for the family today and processing some more shooting. I also have to gather up some digital files they requested. Let me focus on keeping that printer running for a few minutes and take a paper inventory.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m not doing this blogging thing right yet and it’s still a lot of work. But I do love it.
  • When you live in a home for a long time it seems you just put a new roof on when its time for the next one.
  • Trickle down is what happens when you watch your bank account.

It’s time to take the good camera in for some service and cleaning. I’d like to have a backup to use before that and the old Kodak is not. The phone is more reliable and a lot of times better quality. I think I got that Kodak in 2007.

So time to discuss spending a few dollars.

Winds of Change

Mother Nature is coming tomorrow to do some tree trimming in the form of wind which will take a lot of the fall foliage to the ground. A lot have fallen as I discovered yesterday standing by the Patapsco.

So I’m headed back out today to catch what is left on the trees. The next week or two I’ll be busy with the rake, leaf blower and mower tending to them. I remember liking the days I ran at full speed to a huge pile in the yard and just dove in.

I liked how the sun was hitting the freshly fallen leaves floating on top. Then I noticed a bunch that still had their color but had sunk to the bottom.

I loved my time working in Ellicott City even though it was short. I love visiting this town often to just take in it’s natural beauty, walk its streets, go to the dentist at the top of the street or for a meal at one of the restaurants.

TGIF

Fridays come along much faster now that I’m retired. And that is fine with me. I love early starts to the day and I got one today.

I’m a little limited on time today so new shooting might be at a premium. I noticed the work crew along Bethany Lane early this morning developing the few remaining inches of the county. I imagine that work along Rt 99 from Bethany to the Firehouse will break ground soon—more traffic, not my idea of rural living.

It’s kind of an overcast day so far. Maybe some sun later and hopefully a quick ride when my car is completed at the shop.

Yesterday in EC

I stopped by Ellicott City yesterday for a walk and a few photos. It was hard to park the car on such a nice day. You can’t beat a convertible on a sunny day in the low 80s.

Hopefully, this is the first day of many where I try to capture what is special about this area.

I found this storefront window above Gloss Hair Studio from across the street interesting.

I should have reached the door and said hello to this longtime merchant. It has to be a few decades there. Kind of got me thinking about one for my office when we redo the basement in the future.

I didn’t remember shooting this wall art below from this angle so I went up a small incline and pointed through a fence.

Now I know why I like this art. It’s the red convertible. Photo by Mike Hartley

I can always find something in bloom in this old town.

There is a lot more attention to the floral part of the town now. Photo by Mike Hartley

This is an easy place to shoot. Finding beauty here is fairly easy.

Go to EC yourself, have a meal, shop, check the sights, say hello, and have someone reply with a smile and hello. Photo by Mike Hartley

This probably doesn’t need any more promotion because it’s always packed. But it might be something I go downtown for again. It’s been a few years since I’ve been to the last one. The Main Street Music Festival is coming on Sept 21.

I still feel at home in this town over 5 decades after I first started working here. Well, it’s time to put a bow on this post and think about where in the county I’m going shooting today.

Initiatives

I really should start getting out of the house more. And to add incentive to do so I thought I’d start taking shots around the county each day. A goal I had long ago but never got off the ground. I’ve loved living here for many decades and it’s a beautiful place.

So out I go to capture some of its wonders on this warm September day. Like this home.

So hopefully I’ll return later today with more to share.

Rest of the Rally

I had 10 more shots to share from the Rally at Turf Valley from this past weekend.

I’m trying to find angles and lines highlighting the car’s best attributes.

Getting the depth of paint and color right is always a challenge. I never seem to do them justice.

The lines on most of today’s late-model cars don’t do it for me. Yeah, the horsepower and technology are great but the styling loses me.

It could be the era I grew up in but I think it’s more than that. First, there is no chrome on the car anymore.

I mean, chrome and whitewalls. Simple but stated. Chrome bumpers, chrome trim, and emblems. Engine bays you could climb into.

Pony’s going left and right above. I’m sure the ones pointing forward win when the key is inserted.

Chrome and custom paint. I love the artistic touches added to some. And when done right it works.

I think deciding what color to repaint my car would be the toughest, of all decisions. And then you have to decide on graphics or not.

With the rain forecast for today and tonight, the cover will stay on my ride, but this weekend is looking good for cruising and that is what we do.

All photos by Mike Hartley

I think it’s almost time to retire that old Kodak z812is. I wasn’t pleased with the sharpness of these shots. My phone may be sharper than this camera. And it should be. I think it’s at least 16 or 17 years old. I believe I’ll put it away till bad weather or risky situations where I might not want to damage the Nikon.

Rally for Wreaths

I dropped by the Rally for the Wreaths car show at Turf Valley supporting Wreaths Across America and Veterans Cemeteries in Maryland this morning to practice my car photography. I believe it was their 3rd annual show.

Standing in front of this isn’t a good idea. Photo by Mike Hartley

I really should have spent a few hours but chores at home were waiting. I like trying to find unique things at shows to shoot. Be it the beautiful lines on a car or things you don’t see on every car.

I couldn’t let this pass without catching a shot. I love the bikes. Photo by Mike Hartley

The colors and contrast of styles and years are striking.

A dash type I started driving in. AM only radio. Photo by Mike Hartley

And even the size of vehicles varies. Just like those strolling the lot, young and old, black and white, and if I were to venture a guess Republicans and Democrats all enjoying the show.

Something for everyone. Photo by Mike Hartley

I like the friendliness at the rally. No matter which one I attend, I seem to meet the nicest people.

Hoods up. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was surprised to see this in the lower lot. They are going to need more room if they want to expand it. But weekend golfers are the priority I guess. It used to be in the upper lot if I remember correctly.

Well, time to cut the grass if the battery in the mower is taking a charge. Plus I didn’t want to use all the shots in one post. Have a great afternoon.

Do I hear 100

Good day Howard County and beyond. I’ve been out a bit already and that heat was beating down strong early this morning. So be it, I’ve still got chores to do and an early start was essential. I hope to be done before it gets to the max temps.

OK, 2/3 of the mowing is complete. I’ll do the rest on Wednesday or Thursday. With this heat and drought, I haven’t cut in 2 1/2 weeks. Was long in spots and dormant in others.

I saw 99 degrees on the computer, I strolled past the Weather Channel and Baltimore was 104. I was downtown yesterday and it cooks on those city streets.

I hope to pack in a ton of activities in the next 2-3 months. Some of them are local like the Howard County Fair which takes place August 3-10. I hope to spend a few days there shooting that event.

The Ellicott City project I’ve been working on has some holes in it that I will be filling with some shots this week.

Well, time for an early dinner at Oscar’s Alehouse in Woodstock. If the rain holds off I’m going out shooting after the All-Star Game.

Have a great afternoon all.

Chevy vs Chevy

Just a little late day contrast. I’ve been busy editing photos, carving and catching a nap in the hammock. But now the rains have come and I’m still a little light on sleep so maybe I’ll crash early and get up and moving early again.

Still trying to optimize the space in the basement and making some progress in that. And like these two pictures I mix a little old with the new.

Go get’em Champ. Photo by Mike Hartley

Tomorrow I’m getting out and doing some new shooting. Not sure of the destination but I’ll be out and about here and there and everywhere.

Then again both neighbors had their yards cut today so I’m drawing the long blade of grass currently. I’m not too inspired for yard work the next few days though.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Bring on the heat.
  • Whoa it’s hot, step into the AC
  • Back outside because I’m not a wimp.
  • Back inside because I’m old.
  • Back outside because the hammock is now in the shade.
  • I think the lightning bugs loved that rain. They are lighting up the backyard.
  • See ya tomorrow. I hope.

Babes and my wood pile

My extended family was back as usual. These two are loving my backyard for play and meals. I’ve seen more wildlife this year than in past seasons. And that is wonderful, except that my better half tires of me saying “Come look.”

I probably get over-excited about it, but I grew up seeing a good bit and continue to love observing nature.

I hooked up my old speakers and receiver and kicked out some tunes this morning. My better half goes out for a haircut later so I’ll blow the dust off them while she is out. It’s been many years since I’ve had them active.

Now I have something I can use for an outdoor party. And it’s time for one indeed.

Dilemma #1 of the day – Do I take the cover off the car, go out in the heat, and then have to put it on later before the storms, or do I leave it on and take the SUV and the AC?

Dilemma #2 of the day – With the CD player inside alive again which to I leave in the house and which in the car?

Dilemma #3 of the day – Woodwork, drawing, or photography? Or all of them!

It’s nice to have easy questions to answer. I like being my boss.

Bang

The starting gun has sounded and we’re off again on another adventure. A productive morning and restful one also. A quick haircut, some music and headed out for a cruise and some photos. A stop at Duchess for a sandwich for lunch and down to Old Ellicott City to eat it parked against the Patapsco.

Watched a fisherman for a few minutes. I didn’t see any landed but then again I wasn’t practicing patience either.

Stopped for a few shots along Woodstock and Old Court Road. I’ll have another post later with some wood carvings that were very impressive.

Saturday Freedom

We were going to walk the trolley trail in Oella but Ellicott City was packed so we will do that tomorrow instead. We rode for a bit with the top down and stopped at Rocky Gorge Reservoir in southern Howard County.

I hoped to walk for a bit there but my back tightened up and put that thought on hold.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I like watching the sunrise and sunset at the beach. And if I have to watch it on a webcam, so be it.
  • I have never trusted artificial sweeteners and never will.
  • Alone with my thoughts, that is the only safe place for them.
  • I’m thinking of a kayak and a bicycle this summer.

The Hands Have IT

A few years back, just before COVID-19, I got my better half a gift of a couples massage and lunch. I had forgotten all about it, till she mentioned earlier this year after retirement. She booked the appointment this past week and it was great.

To be honest I was a bit nervous. I’ve never been to a spa before. I’m ticklish so I was afraid I would bust out laughing. I’m not a prude, I grew up in the late 60s and 70s. My body has seen some airtime.

Well, experience is enlightenment. I’ve now added this to the treat ourselves to list at least once or twice a year. I’m sold on it. My body felt great the rest of the day and into the next. A very comfortable night of sleep and the numbness and tingling in my left arm reduced significantly.

I’ve been getting my better half, my daughter, and, my daughter-in-law gift certificates at Christmas to The Spa at Turf Valley for many years. I should have figured something was up with this.

Don’t worry, I don’t have the means to go all country club on you all. Plus something like this is a special treat and it wouldn’t feel so good if it was being done all the time. Without some hard work I might not appreciate something like this as much.

Love that sun

It’s baking out today and I love it. The outdoor cushions have vacated the house and are in their proper place on the deck chairs. The umbrella is up over the picnic table once again. Of course, a ton of pollen was removed from the deck first.

The ride has been shined and the county roads have been traveled. And there are always telltale signs you’re on a country road. Like this guy below who just came across a narrow bridge on Rt 144. There is a fair chance I could have driven the Miata under the center of that thing.

I feel like I’m about a month ahead on my tan. Mowing the backyard was a late-day activity. I finally spent a few minutes in the hammock just before dinner.

Might take another cruise this evening. Then again I have a ton of editing and uploading to do. Also, prep for tomorrow’s shooting.

A ride without being tailgated is a good ride. Photo by Mike Hartley

By the way, I was enjoying the drive too much to stop and shoot so these were taken over the windshield as I cruised.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love the sound of my children’s voices.
  • I’m almost to the waist size I was when I got married. And that was a long time ago.
  • Lots of thoughts cross my mind. Fewer cross my lips.
  • Trying to decide what modification I want to make first on the car is difficult.

Out and about

Outdoors today and loving life. I took my ballot to the West Friendship VFD drop-off point, yes it’s close to the last day but it’s in time and there isn’t a prize for doing it early.

Stepping into life

With a high of about 90 degrees today I soaked in the heat and sun in preparation for this weekend’s cooldown.

But it’s a day to savor for many reasons. One is because each day is special. It might be filled with problems, challenges, and frustrations or overflowing with joy, fun, and solutions.

No hesitation in that first step. Photo by Mike Hartley

It could be a simple day, filled with chores, music, a cruise with the top down, and some photography.

I may gather with friends for dinner and a refreshing beverage.

3 glasses, 3 friends tonight

It could be a momentous day. All I need to do is try.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The evenings of restless sleep and short cycles are returning, unfortunately. I didn’t dream it would be this hard to escape the many years of night shifts.
  • I have to do some planning for my granddaughter’s visit tomorrow. My hope is she looks back at these times here as some of the happiest days.
  • I sense a possible night cruising this evening.
  • Topped yesterday with today. I hope to do the same tomorrow.

What can I unearth today

I might have to do some digging today, to see what I might turn up.

More construction at Turf Valley yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

Will this be the day I capture a special image? Will it be the day I pick up a new book? Will it be the day the Dremel tool comes alive? Will it be the day I resume work on a book I’m writing?

We were going to head to the Antietam Battlefield today but it’s going to be baking and I’d rather choose a nice spring day in the next week or two to wander outside a good bit.

So I’ll get the cameras out for the local flavor again and see what I can bring to this blog this afternoon and evening. Unless I let myself be consumed with chores.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Many of my neighbor’s landscaping companies all like to start around 7 or 8 am. Because I always hear those big mowers crank up like this morning at 7:30 am. I always wondered if the adage of not cutting grass early in the day was true so I Googled it as any good idiot does nowadays and they say = “Early morning (6 – 8 a.m.) is not recommended for mowing This is one of the worst times to mow. Your lawn will still be wet from the morning dew which will make it messy and hard on your mower. Mowing wet grass also will tear it rather than cut it, which is an open invitation to disease and fungus”
  • Some people have the most infectious smile and laugh. I’m glad I know a lot of them.
  • I’ve got to photograph a few things for prosperity. Like the peel-off badges, I had for the day before my son was born. Or the notes the kids would write me when they were young. I also have a few old postcards with some messages from my dad that are also fading.
  • I learned another new thing about my camera today.
  • Let me get out of this chair and get to caulking the front porch.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Smiles are a good cover.
  • There was a lot of beauty out today. I didn’t have the time to stop and capture some of it but tomorrow is another day.
  • The search for that happy place continues.
  • It was one of those days I had to remind myself how lucky and blessed I am.

Saturday salutations

The sun is struggling to appear on this fine day. I’m changing some of the plans due to rain early this morning. The mowing is moving to the afternoon, the morning car show is a no-go for me with wet roads so I have a little creative time.

Just 3 deer of about 8 normally stroll through the court behind our home. Photo by Mike Hartley

A quick afternoon appointment and then I’ll wash and shine the fun machine put the top down and enjoy the day. I’d also like to capture some fresh images and a cherry snowball.

Holly crap, I just looked at the to-do list. If I pay attention to that the day could be ruined. I’m sticking with the above plan.

Random Thoughts of the Day (Morning Edition)

  • I hate, walking into spiderwebs. I was reminded of this morning.
  • Bees are our friends, till they sting you.
  • I need to order a few loads of fill dirt and maybe one topsoil. I’ve avoided ordering it because moving it follows that.
  • Having appreciation makes the day a wonderful thing. I need to remember that more.

Cruise

Few things are as good as a convertible on a mid-70s day with the sun shining on the back roads of Howard Country. My better half and I got out yesterday, stopped at Duchess for sandwiches, and ate by the river in Ellicott City.

Photos by Mike Hartley

We then ventured down to Fulton, over to Brighton Dam, and up some back roads to the western part of the county. Some freshly plowed fields, huge homes, and bright churches.

Oh, I couldn’t resist taking a shot of the beautiful Bobber. I wish I had asked the guy for some information on it.

I hope to get out again today and capture some images, but lots of chores might get in the way of that idea, and with the rains coming the cover is going on the Miata.

Angle

What is my angle early this morning. Like the tower, partially upright. Tired and mentally spent I don’t know what I’m doing yet. I stayed up way too late watching hoops with the boys and then doing some photo editing till early this morning.

I can’t wait till the sweet corn is in from the Eastern Shore this year. Photo by Mike Hartley

But like the field behind the tower I will look towards the sun this morning and move with the days breeze and grow as a person. A good day to reflect on some things, like priorities.

I pulled the cover off the car and I need to get to work detailing it a bit. I think I’ll pull a few of my favorite CD’s out and go for a cruise in the afternoon on this sunny day. And that means a Cherry Snowball as I head home from the ride.

I’m doing that to avoid looking at my to-do list. It’s long and full of needed attention but so is life and that is a higher priority today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The song Dangerous by the Doobie Brothers is a good riding tune.
  • So much to accomplish today and only 12 hours left.
  • I’ve never picked up a guitar but some days I feel like grabbing one and plugging it into a big amp and going to work. Other days I long to climb behind a drumset and pound away. I guess that is the good thing about singing, I can bust out when I want, and of course when people aren’t around.
  • It would be nice outside without that strong wind, but that’s March.
  • I sense a good summer ahead.

What makes you laugh? – So inquires the Daily Writing prompt.

I love finding humor in life and I love to make others laugh. I like to laugh so much that it’s a big part of each day. My friends and I go back and forth till we can’t catch our breath a lot of days. Comedy helps snap me out of a funk.

  • Daily life makes me laugh. I mean come on, it’s filled with people. And people do the darndest things.
  • Cartoons from the 60s and 70s. Bugs, Road Runner, Daffy, Wile E Coyote, and the crew.
  • When I do something stupid I tend to laugh at myself
  • People who can do good stand-up comedy.
  • Clean jokes, crude jokes, any good joke.
  • Physical comedic actors.
  • Comedians like Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and hundreds more.
  • My better half, our children, and grandchildren make me laugh.
  • My friends make me laugh. Well, let me put that more accurately. We are trying to kill each other with laughter.
  • Some people’s idea of management.
  • Some people’s idea of driving.

Small town x 2

I went out to get gas and ended up stopping in two small towns (Ellicott City and Sykesville). Some of my favorite local ones. It was a bit chilly but I put the top down after gassing up. Driving the country roads getting to and from them. And yes some exercise walking each of them for a little bit.

From a mother with 3 small children hitting Firehouse Creamery to a couple watching the Patapsco flow by. Joined by the same railroad tracks that go through both towns.

Photos by Mike Hartley

This morning’s event of the bridge collapse has left a cloud over the day. I was so upbeat this morning before I saw this sad news. I had started a post and ended up trashing it and not being able to think till I got out for a few minutes and cleared my head with the camera.

Tomorrow is Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving. We are going for lunch or dinner. They donate all sales to local charities I believe.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s ok to waste a part of the day but never the whole day.
  • I’m going cold turkey from Jelly Beans till after Easter.
  • I wonder if all the people watching that bridge collapse will be more nervous driving over big bridges from now on.
  • I remember going under the Key Bridge with our friend Dan in his boat.

Get moving

I’ve got to get on a schedule, like the trains. Predictability is good. I never had the time to make that a part of my blogging. Just time to pull together an image and a few words while working and living was a goal I had trouble doing daily.

Now, without a full-time job, I can crank out a few posts a day without much issue. So why not try to start a routine for this mess of a blog?

Trains are rolling art displays. Photo by Mike Hartley

This train will run 7 days a week. Track maintenance (doctor visits) might affect the schedule. There will be multiple trains each day that may run anytime day or night. The engineer has a weird lifestyle and many other loves, passions, chores, and obligations.

This train might go off the rails at times. It might seem to be more off-track than on.

This train has many different speeds and will go at whatever is inspiring it, or slowing it down with negative vibes.

Train getting ready to cross Woodstock Road Photo by Mike Hartley

This train has many unscheduled stops along the way. If the conductor or engineer feels the need to stop and look at something beautiful, then enjoy it.

This train may be an express at times and only a start and reach its endpoint.

This train has a dining car. For Food Reviews of course.

This is also an auto-train. Yep, it stops and we get off for some 4-wheel adventures.

This train hauls freight so some baggage might be unloaded from time to time. But also some important presents here and there.

I worked for a short time, in a building just to the right of this bridge. Photo by Mike Hartley

This train may go through tunnels of darkness but don’t worry, we always emerge out the other side.

This train has many stations and new ones, constructed all the time.

I read that trains are symbolic of progress, destiny, change, and transitions. Maybe some of that will rub off here.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling the need to listen to music today. And we know that inspires the feet to move.
  • Way too cold for the first day of Spring. I’m staying inside as a protest.
  • It’s bracket-picking time. I’ve talked my better half into doing one. I’m going to do it like one of those ab lib games. I’m just going to give her the names of both teams and fill out the brackets. The odds are she wins it all.
  • Never write off any day.

A quick ride

I went for a quick ride Thursday and snapped a few images, soaking up some rays, sights, and smells. The shot of the bike below was at the Rt 99 and Rt 32 intersection. It had a beautiful green paint job and the plates 01RDKG (2001 Road King). It sounded nice also.

The shot of the open field with the front-end loader and spreader truck and farm while peaceful, had the ominous smell of the fields being fertilized. Whoo Nellie, not that I haven’t grown up in the county and smelled it before, but this was fresh and in the process of being put down. I hastened my pace through here a bit.

Photos by Mike Hartley

The tree and swing, the roofers working and the kid punting footballs on the baseball field at Wallace Park all along Rt 144.

I hope to get out tomorrow and capture more images of life around the area. The bulk of today was spent on chores but we did have a wonderful dinner with our daughter and a Facetime with our son so it’s been a great day.

When you love simple pleasures it’s a lot easier to love life.

Talk to the umbrella

Communication – I love it if it’s both ways. Otherwise, it’s a lecture, I’m not always big on those.

Just passing by at an interesting angle. Photo by Mike Hartley

Good day, I wish I had gotten an earlier start. No problem, I’ll stay up later today working on my passions.

I have a love-hate relationship going on with my property. I love my yard so much and then there are days like this and I look at the work in front of me and sigh with dread. Charging the battery for the rider is the first thing today. I don’t want the grass to get out of control from the get-go. I’m guessing in a week or two, it will need its first cutting.

It does feel good to be outside. That sunshine feels nice even though it’s much cooler this weekend than the last few days. I still took some outdoor furniture back outside, if there is sun out, I want to enjoy it.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The earlier gouge on my hand reminded me to use my gloves before working outside today.
  • Our shed is old but in pretty good shape still. It’s small but functional. And like the mower in it, both will need to be replaced in the coming years.
  • There is always one power tool that will give me trouble in the spring.
  • Taking stock is difficult. Taking a flier is easy.
  • My willpower is fading, I’m hungry. I have to keep active. Back to work in the yard, I go.

Scary Trees

Trees are haunting this empty home along Rt 99. I might have to go back and shoot this on a full moon. With all those vines those trees won’t be standing much longer.

What will fall first, the home or trees? Photo by Mike Hartley

What a beautiful day. I got to spend a few hours cruising with my better half around the back roads of the county and down into Old Ellicott City and then to Danials. Things are starting to green up on the ground and there are buds on some trees already.

Along Rt 144. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m holding out hope to do some shooting before sunrise. Also, some videos from Monday to download edit, and upload. And I haven’t made any prints yet today so that has to be a priority the rest of this evening.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There is a cleanness of the air today.
  • Flowers peaking out of the ground make the moment you see them special.
  • Today I rode. Tomorrow I walk.
  • Time to schedule a vacation day from retirement.
  • Sitting here wondering if the 26 year old John Deere will crank up and run another season.

Choices

Will I shoot most of the day, stay up late editing and playing with photos, or go out for some night shots in the area? As long as I do 2 of the 3 I’ll be happy.

Along Rt 99 by the Conservancy. Photo Illustration by Mike Hartley

Will I sell the Chevy this week or hold out for more?

Will I get Chinese or BBQ for the game on Wednesday night?

Will I remember to make a doctor’s appointment today?

Will I answer the dumb ass question of the daily writing prompt today?

Will I blow off my to-do list of responsible things and have some fun?

Window message received

This message was rather striking on an early morning walk in Old Town EC a few weeks ago. It also reminded me I’m going to fall far short of reading a book in February. I haven’t touched the one I started in two weeks. I guess I’ll have to move things back or double up in March.

I would like to apologize for not following along with the postings for the last few days. I’ve been horizontal with a bug since Wednesday night and I was away 2 days before that. Hopefully, tomorrow is a better day and I can return to normal reading and production.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Health is everything.
  • It’s hard to type while shivering.
  • Despite the poor start, this is going to be a great month.
  • My sleep has been so disturbed, it’s almost like I’m back working night shifts again.

Logistical Day

Today was not a day for my creative endeavors, but it was a very productive day. Tons of family planning for trips were made after exhausting searches and coordinating schedules. It’s also tax season so gathering all that info has been almost completed, mostly by my better half but I contributed several things also.

A haircut was squeezed in this morning, some financial planning this evening, and family and friend communications. Two of those were very important because of close friends with ill family members. A good reminder of how precious life is.

Streetlight and early morning dawn on this snow-covered tree made it look like it was in bloom. Photo by Mike Hartley

This is a packed week and may be a good test for me to see how much creativity I can cram into a few minutes here and there. A few days with grandchildren, a day of automotive and power equipment repairs, bank and financial appointments, some home repairs, and doctor appointments to make.

Taking advantage of time is so important. Like right now I’m multitasking by listening to some music, editing photos, writing a blog, and making a few prints, before getting back to a few chores.

Could it be, nah, don’t tease me, weatherman. What is this string of 60+ degree days next week and SUN you talk about? It’s got me smiling already and it’s a week away but I can’t help myself. I’ve had it with winter and the snow that is still on the ground and night temps in the 20s.

I’m ready to cut loose in so many ways. Warm up the roads and tires for some cruising. To find my shorts and tee shirts and walking/running shoes. To step onto the porch or deck with bare feet and feel the warmth. Hell, I might just peel the shirt off next week and start working on the tan. Hell YEAH.

Because sunshine and warm weather just inspire me to be outside. Plus the faster it warms up the faster my local snowball stand will thaw out, open, and no longer will look like the shot below.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Just when you’re ready to give up, DON’T.
  • Things take time. Good things take more time usually.
  • Upbeat music, upbeat thoughts.
  • Let me go charge those camera batteries before I forget and get caught short tomorrow. Cold takes a toll on them when outside for a while it seems.

Thank you

To the road crews of the county and state, who keep our streets safe, I say thank you. That is a tough job and one that is very important.

Well as week 7 of retirement comes to an end, I find that time is going even faster than it did when working. I guess that means I’m having a good time. Doesn’t feel like it at times though. Mostly because of logistical chores and tasks.

But those are mostly complete and time for other things will present itself.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Pizza for breakfast isn’t just for the young, we seniors enjoy it also.
  • Can’t believe it’s been a decade since a friend passed.

Early shoot

I got outside before sunrise today. Felt good but a little too cool for my liking. I knew it was going to get windy and blow the snow off the trees so I wanted to get out early.

Shots around in Ellicott City and Woodstock this morning.

Right up our alley

Keeping my emotional happiness at a high level each day is the key to more productivity. It makes the moments more special, the creative juices flowing, the health better, and a smile on my face. Therefore more is accomplished, and it just creates an ongoing cycle of feel-good.

Yesterday wasn’t that day. But today is starting much better.

It’s an alley I’m familiar with. Photo by Mike Hartley

Dinner and a Maryland basketball game with a best friend Wednesday night was a great way to spend an evening, especially with a comeback victory by the Terps. And then some great conversation, laughs, story trading, and family updates.

Followed that up with both my best friends on Thursday night with a great happy hour or two or three. Last night I just kept my behind inside and fell asleep early like I had planned.

I was wondering how long it would take for weekends to lose their significance being I’m not doing the traditional workweek any longer. I think it’s starting to change now because I’m starting to lose the distinction from other days in the week.

So about a month and a half, when weekdays and weekends started to run together. That’s not too bad. At least I still know what day of the week it is. I wonder how long before I start to lose that distinction.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A day of rest is needed. I believe Sunday looks good.
  • Dogs wear me out.
  • I feel the need to do something special tonight.
  • Anger management – Working on it. A lot better than I used to be but one can always improve.

Sun to Snow

Like the day itself, the longer it goes the more I feel like a shadow of myself. Tomorrow morning those trees will be as white as that wall behind them with snow.

I’m hoping to drum up the fortitude to face the cold tonight and do some photography. We will see how that old front-wheel drive Chevy does.

The other day I wrote illuding to switching insurance companies and referred to someone not being on my side. Well, today since they screwed with me after I canceled the policy by taking another deduction from my bank days after the policy was canceled. This has now pissed me off and cost me time. So Nationwide you are now named as my piss poor past insurance company so there is no mistake as to who I could be referencing the other day.

  • I could use a new office chair. So says my back and backside.
  • Looks like Comrade Trump is having another bad day. Karma baby.

Progress, pizza, party

We’re off to a new week. A good start for a Monday if I must say so. Kept at things today and accomplishments started to stack up like a pile of freshly cut wood. So why not keep the spirit going into the evening. I’ve got 2-3 hours left in me.

We treated ourselves to a Ledo Pizza after running errands. It was great to dig into a pizza that doesn’t cut corners. I’ve been to a number of locations in the state but our most regular is in Normandy in Ellicott City.

we were hungry and destroyed half of it before I thought about grabbing the camera. Photo by Mike Hartley

Always cooked to perfection, good service and so good. I was thinking about being healthy but hey, it was pizza day and nobody has the pre-cooked bacon like they do so what the hell. Heart attack in a pie. Well it was a large with half mushroom for my better half. The other side was the heart blocker.

This evening I guess I’m having myself a little party. Trying to let music be my guide in creating some new pieces. I’ve had to move to the headphones because my better half has decided rest is important.

Rumor of some snow around 4am so maybe some very late night shooting is in order. Burr. I’ll have to set the alarm for that one. But till then I think I’ll crank up the printer and work on a family wall of images I started.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I had a day with each of my grandchildren this past week and it was wonderful. It takes a lot to raise children and parents need all the assistance they can get.
  • That rolling piano style of Billy Powell really catches my ear.
  • My eyes are just being opened to all the wonderful things to see and read. Better late than never.
  • A thank you again to the person who said to just go ahead of them in the pharmacy line at Walgreens today.
  • Living outside reality can smack you hard someday.

Super

The day doesn’t have to be Super Bowl Sunday to be super. But we will go with the theme and spirit of the day to keep the positive attitude rolling. Starting the day with some inspirational music to get rolling on some creative endeavors.

A cloudy day ahead with the winds picking up. And that means I better get the strap on the car cover this morning before they get gusting the next few days. And with the temperatures getting milder again I’m going to hibernate for a bit.

I’m still getting used to being off for events like the Super Bowl and holidays. And who knows what might happen over the next 2 months with College Basketball coming to a peak with conference tournaments and then March Madness. I guess we will discover if someone can overdose on basketball or not this season.

So pick out your favorite chair today and get comfortable for the game. Or take your place in front of the snack table and munch out. I think I might get on the treadmill for a few miles during the game to burn off a few calories I’m sure I’ll put on today.

I’m going for something a little more comfortable later on. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I’ll work on some drawing today and step away from the computers for a bit. That is one of the nice things about having a few different hobbies. If I get writer’s block I can edit photos. If I get tired of cropping, toning, and printing I can draw. If I get tired of looking at 2 dimensions, I can grab my camera and look at 3. If I tire of pressing the shutter I’ll grab the Dremel tool.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of my favorite songs.
  • I like having a candle lit in the office.
  • Every once in a while I think about letting my hair grow long again.
  • I don’t have to have a business to be a professional.

A lock on love

Just a few more shots from the mid week shoot.

Crossing Into Love City. Yeah I love this little town. Hell, my wife is from here. Got my first real job in newspapers in this town. Started our own newspaper in this town decades later with two wonderful partners. My dentist and friend is on Main Street. It’s great exercise to walk the town. I have enjoyed many walks and meals with family and some of my closest friends.

Where a lot of people smile and say hi or hello. Well at least I do when in town. Photo by Mike Hartley

When troubled or feeling good I go there to walk, or sit or photograph or explore. Or just to chow down of a roast beef sandwich from Duchess up the road while watching the Patapsco flow by.

I can’t wait for it to green up again. Photo by Mike Hartley

The town changes looks so much during the various seasons that I always feel like I see something new. It’s my next project to put together the shots of this over the years and start to fill in a few things I might have missed.

And being its near Valentines day there seemed to be some symbols of love around town.

The seasons are always represented well by the merchants. Photo by Mike Hartley

In some ways it will always be part of my home. We got married in town. Our first apartment was just up the road in Normandy Woods.

It’s been a place for engagement photos or even wedding events/photos for decades.

A town where some have generations of people living there or surrounding hills. Not as much as when I first ventured into town in the early 70s, but a good friend of mine who grew up in town, still keeps in touch with a few long time residents.

I bet it’s the place where you see more people holding hands than other spots in the county.

When floods devastated the town from Agnes in the 70s to the 2 once in a thousand year floods a few years ago it ripped a piece of a lot of peoples hearts out. I was in town the morning of the two most recent ones. A family walk from the home my wife grew up in to downtown EC the day of the 2018 flood.

The second one I was out photographing along College Avenue and on the way home early that morning I stopped at the corner of Main and Maryland Avenue by the old Phoenix Restaurant. As I pulled onto Main it was quiet and I just raise my camera over the windshield and snapped a shot of what would be destroyed later that day.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I don’t remember feeling so indifferent about a Super Bowl before. I don’t know if its the gambling or the league treating the players like old Roman gladiators, totally indifferent to there health regarding the brain injuries and that settlement they came too is appearing to be a joke. So NFL, take the game and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
  • Finally realized some sad truths recently.
  • Time to put the cover on the car again for the coming rains.

Nope

When you can’t see all the steps to even count them to get to the front door, no thank you. Beautiful home and porch though in Old Ellicott City. And the view is probably great. Maybe there is a back drive up entrance? Then again, taking the trash to the curb might be an effort.

Hard

It’s hard to keep your head above water sometimes. I feel like I’m drowning from time to time. But wisdom has taught me survival techniques. Making use of one of them right now. Music is changing my spirit as I type. Listening to an old tune from the Doobie Brothers “Dangerous” and its an upbeat one that reminds me of motorcycle riding days. Followed that with “The Doctor” which is another upbeat song to smile to.

Maybe that’s my problem. I’ve been looking above the surface. Photo by Mike Hartley

I don’t have much energy left in the day. The granddaughter can burn through my reserves without missing a beat. But she is back with her mother tonight and my body is sending me urgent messages to get horizontal soon.

But my mind feels like there is unfinished business and ideas to work on. I did some shooting this afternoon I should download and edit, I haven’t worked on my books yet today. I owe a couple people emails.

Well let me flip a coin and see if we work or rest. There is it, we WORK. Gentlemen, start your engines.

I have roots in this town

Decided I needed to do some walking outside yesterday and skipped the treadmill. So I took the go cart (Miata) out to Ellicott City, parked at the upper lot, wound my way up to the old courthouse and down by the old fire station. Back up the street to the Wine Bin and back down the street to the Trolley Stop and admire the river for a bit and then back up the street through a couple of back ways and lots.

I sat outside the old Times building and the Stone building at the bottom of the hill by the river which both used to be my offices. But really I went down to see some major changes in the towns where buildings are being torn down for the new flood tunnels and park area I believe.

Lower end of EC. I’d like to see this town bounce back in a big way in the future. Photo by Mike Hartley

The next time I’m there I’m going to try that Milkshake shop called The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar.

It’s also been a bit since having a meal in town so I’m going to have to change that also. More photos from the shoot coming later. Busy morning ahead.

Perspective in a shovel

In some ways, I enjoyed shoveling this month. The exercise, cool air in the lungs, and snowflakes in the face. I looked across the street at a neighbor’s home knowing he was probably inside looking out wishing he was on his tractor with the plow doing his driveway and helping others as needed.

Unfortunately, he is in his 90s now and unable to get around much and his better half said he wasn’t doing well. A very nice man with a great smile. Always a wave and would take the time to chat for a few minutes if we were out together working. Yes, my better half and I did shovel them out along with another neighbor. But that isn’t the point.

You’re going to need a bigger plow. Centennial HS – Photo by Mike Hartley

I remember the year I had surgery one summer and for the first time in my life, I had to hire someone to cut the yard. I would look out as they cut and wanted to get back out there so bad on my mower and do it regardless that I despised wasting time on a mower. It was the first time in my life I wondered how many more cuts I would have the pleasure of doing. From that day forward I never looked at cutting the yard as a chore.

And now recently I thought about how many more times I would have the pleasure of shoveling my driveway. After not having snowed here in 2 years, getting back-to-back ones in a week was a change of pace but one that I have appreciated also. That was till my back reminded me that I was too old and should be done with a shovel and either get a snow blower or tractor.

We take a lot of things in life for granted for long periods till reality shakes us and we realize things are finite. Surrendering to those devices (equipment) also means my time with them may be limited. So enjoy life as you can, one shovel full at a time or one crank of the engine. You never know when you will be looking through that window at others outside.

Random Thoughts of the Day

Time, ain’t it something

I blink my eyes, and my kids are grown. I blink my eyes and my career has come to a close. I blink my eyes and WordPress says it’s been 10 years together today. And 2,845 posts later here we are. Doing more then ever and loving each day I get a chance to take a crack at it again.

Keith Weller shot this picture of Amy and myself in our camera room at the Times building on Main St Ellicott City back in 1976. Those 48 years just flew by. But I have a whole new career ahead of myself now.

It was time to get together for a dinner with my oldest best friends last night and it was a wonderful time. An appreciation for that time together is always between us. The silent acknowledgement that time is not on our side now and that we are to savor these events sometimes comes to the surface but we are usually too busy having a good time to reflect on that aspect.

Time to crank up my own publishing machine. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was going to do a food review of where we ate but I’ve started to think about how I want to do reviews and I don’t feel like making anything other than positive ones. So when I think a place is average or maybe below I’m just going to skip it.

The restaurant business is so tough and costly and it might be more of a disservice to a company if you just caught them on not their best day. We are all human, we all have them.

When I like a place a paragraph or two maybe of what I liked. But when its a hit, you will know it.

Lots of things go into making a good meal. The setting/location/view to the staff/service and of course the food. Different things are also more or less important to individuals. For instance comfort is a big one at our age an uncomfortable seat make it hard to enjoy a meal.

So here is hoping our next meal out is a special one that I can share with you all.

It has taken me most of the week to start feeling okay again. I’m sitting here smiling about it because the options are in front of me as they were before but now I have energy/health and a great mindset to move ahead again. Life is great today.

Cotton balls of snow

Greetings fellow frozen ones. Outdoors on a wintery day again. The cloths are hung again to dry from the snow. The warm and comfy recliner will soon be visited in between working on a few projects in my office.

I was so pleased earlier when some inspiration and time available just happened to pair up and I worked on a book I’ve started and feel good about what I got done. I’ve read where people schedule their writing times and I just find that difficult.

Lots of times when I sit to do the blog and if nothings coming along I’ll get up and walk away and do something else. Most times I’ll get a photo of mine, new/old and that will inspire a blog and off I go. Most of the time it works that way. But writing for a book and a blog I’m discovering are two different things.

In writing for the book and not using images except from my mind so far. And immediately I found that I can’t sit and write some material when I’m down in spirits. I can knock out a blog on my worst day mentally and still keep it positive for the most part. No such thing in writing books I’ve started so far. Then again maybe I’m trying to write the wrong book, when I’m depressed. I’ve never tried writing something dark.

I hope time allows for me to finish a few works. Don’t know if it will amount to a hill of beans but like blogging, it’s become a purpose.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Snow doesn’t look as deep as it is from an inside window as it does outside with a shovel in your hands.
  • Try to limit disappointment and then move on.
  • As is typical. The plow comes down the street as I finish shoveling my driveway. That is just fine though, I’m happy with the job they do in this area with snow removal.
  • If you look and listen hard, it’s easy to figure out where people stand and their priorities. Now taking that information and processing it can be the hard part for a lot of us.

Trail

Saw this young one strolling out of my back yard yesterday leading a pack of 6. They were all back sleeping in my lower back this morning in the snow and they are still there as I peer through the woods.

Wildlife, I love it. Photo by Mike Hartley

With the snow on the ground I’m seeing the trails they take through the neighborhood and lots of them cross through the woods behind us and between my neighbors yard and mine to cross the street or across my front yard.

I grew up with nice patch of woods behind my family home. For nearly the last 4 decades I’ve had woods behind our home. I love looking out into woods. But as most areas in this county every inch seems to be developed and some of the woods are now a few homes but there is still deep enough in the woods to hide them in the winter and summer and with the exception of one home and even that is a bit obscured in the winter.

Sometimes when I’m looking out back now it seem doesn’t seem like 60 years ago we would march into thick woods and make forts that lasted each season. A secret refuge. Nothing special, mostly constructed of woods, maybe an old piece of carpet or scraps of wood/materials from home. I remember going out to it in the middle of winter sometime to what we had built and used all summer.

Ah to be young and just look at something or a spot and start building. I guess I’m doing that still but in different ways and no more heavy lifting of fallen tree logs/branches. I’d rather not build walls anyway.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • You know I do battle with Mother Nature spring, summer and fall. But boy does she piss me off when I have to battle her in winter. Yes it’s pretty, unless your shoveling it.
  • Some say dressing in layers is important. I say staying inside is more important.
  • I just finished the longest vacation I’ve ever taken. I’ve been off for 3 weeks in a row. I kind of like it and the chance to make it permanent leaves me grinning.
  • Writing is easy when healthy.

Half back x 2

Sorry about the absence on Monday. I hadn’t been that ill in a while and I’m still only feeling about 50%. My chest hurts, my throat is raw and I lost (not intentionally) some more weight. I feel weak. I messed up my daily posting streak again. That happens when your a one man band sometimes.

That snow shoveling yesterday didn’t help and now my back is giving me fits today. All this reminds me that if you don’t have your health, you don’t have much going for you. That is why I’m optimistic about the half of me that feels better today allowing for some energy for thoughts to share.

Snow melting on barn roof at Howard County Conservancy. Photo by Mike Hartley

Other than that I’ve been flat on my back today pretty much. And that is something I couldn’t allow myself before when working. So it feels good to take care of myself first instead of the job. I did a lot of stupid things for the job for way too long.

Working when very sick. Coming back early from both of my cancer surgeries. Never missing a day of work while doing 11 weeks Mon-Fri of daily radiation. Then the massive overtime I used to put in while on salary. But like I said those were my stupid choices.

They might be leading to some of the difficulties I’ve had or may have in the future. I’ve done a fare share of hard work. I can still remember the back pain I had as a youth from working in the pressroom every so often flying papers off the conveyer, jogging them and loading counts of 50-100 at a time on a skid. Hours and hours of bending over, lift, standing and bending over again.

But such is life. Many have carried greater burdens or aren’t blessed with the possibility of good health either physically or mentally. So no more complaining today. Just turning on some inspirational music now that I’ve missed the passed 3-4 days and getting back in my grove. First tune (Time Stand Still) by RUSH. Utilize each day the best you can.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Chicken noodle soup is so good after your sick. Seems to be the only time I have it though.
  • When the snow is on the ground you can really see all the wildlife that treks through my back yard.
  • It’s good to remind yourself of your age when you go out to do something you used to do.
  • Nothing like pictures of young children enjoying the snow.
  • Being a good neighbor can be painful if they have long driveways.
  • I feel an urgency to things. Going to really let it flow soon.

One of those days

Every once in a while you get these wake up calls. Enlightening information or perspectives. Ones that change your thoughts and actions in life. I had a few in recent months. Some good information that changed my outlook for the better and some not so good information that I’m also looking at for the better.

For example, retiring a bit earlier than planned. While that has turned out to be a blessing (at least the first 10 days have been). It also shook me up for a few days when cutbacks were announced. After 26 years at the same place it’s a bit like your second home and all those neighbors are going away.

I’ve gotten charged up on creating and the more I do the more I’m fired up to do more. I’m trying to do 2-4 posts a day this year, working on a few books each day, utilizing that nice printer I have and cranking out larger prints for framing. And from today forward I’m going to be doing a lot more shooting (photography type) which means more time editing. All of this is becoming a labor of love.

No rest here. One of the many runners and cyclist around Centennial Park. Photo by Mike Hartley

A few months back I saw a photo of myself that a friend snapped that I used to change my direction in taking better care of my body. It’s not that I hadn’t seen pictures of myself when I was heavier, but it was this particular one with friends that caught me and provided the switch that said stick with it. And after a few months I was able to change what I hadn’t in a few decades. I’ll post the shot I’m talking about when I take another one of me and the same friends at the beach this year.

There are other recent events that have taught me things about people and about myself. Ones that will shape my future and have refocused me. Ones that are a real wake up call. And I’m thankful for that because today will be better for it and every day forward.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Wind = Mother Natures hedge trimmers and chainsaw. And sometimes house renovator.
  • I have a taste for pizza today.
  • Gambling is becoming such a part of sports broadcast, programming and advertising I’m losing my interest in most of them.
  • Each day just got more special.

Milling About

We took a trip to Savage Mill today after some errands. And started with a great lunch at The Dive Bar and Grille. I had the Alabama Slammer burger and my better half had the Strawberry Balsamico salad. We finished it with each having a buttercream from Sweet Cascades Chocolatier. In between we strolled around indoors and outside for a short bit.

I was very sad to see HorseSpirit Arts Gallary closing its doors. They have many beautiful pieces in there. I haven’t downloaded it from the other camera but had a few images from the phone to share. I’ll be going back there in the spring where we can sit outside and dine if it’s nice and wander outside and some nearby trails.

I have to admit this is my first visit to Savage Mill and it’s got that artist environment that I like in between other stores my better half is drawn to. I liked the ArtCraft store the most. A couple of books were purchased from The Last Word bookstore.

My first suggestion for what to do this week looked to be a winner.

What a Day

I haven’t felt this alive in a while. Like I’m looking out and I have the chance to redefine my world. What an opportunity that is to have. And now that the job that pays the bills is no longer, the time to live again for wonderful things is about to happen. I don’t know who is more excited, my better half or me.

I’ve boxed up my work computers and they are ready to be sent back. Moved my work desk back into my office and got my two computers set up nicely on a separate desk. Also redesigned the TV area of the basement space a bit.

I think this is the first New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day that I haven’t worked in a long time. It’s sweet to have the time off. Tomorrow is another day off followed by another one and so on. Life is great again.

Coming up with my own 2024 goals list. It’s already pretty flushed out with ideas to review with my partner in travel and adventure. Tonight we are going to travel and see local light displays. Was too tired last night but we are out and about for a bit this evening.

Company Man

I’ve been a big supporter of the companies I’ve worked for throughout my career. I worked my ass off for these companies. I’ve sacrificed for these companies. I believed in these companies. I believed in the people working their asses off side by side with me. I’ve defended and sometimes even been a public face for them.

I believed in the mission these companies stood for and provided to the communities I lived in. I was proud and honored to work at each of them. I gave it my all, well most days, nobody’s perfect. I worked with the most inspiring people. I worked with the most talented people. I worked with the most respected people. I worked for some great leaders, publishers, editors, writers, photographers, technicians, and every other person who supports and makes a news organization run.

I have great respect for those behind the scenes and in the production and support areas that keep those news machines moving 24/7/365. Without fail, without pause, regardless of conditions, with ingenuity, with guile, with dedication.

Select your companies carefully. Photo by Mike Hartley

I never believed when I started in the mid-70s that the profession of local and national journalism would be mistrusted, despised, and hated. But coming out of that 2000-2008 timeframe and depression the dynamic changed. And continued to this day.

I feel like I was kind of blessed to work in the era I did, with the people I did, with the companies I did. Today is my last day with The Washington Post. And formerly of Zip Publishing, Patuxent Publishing, and Stromberg Publishing. Almost 5 decades flew by in the blink of an eye. And yes I did enjoy the journey. And a special thanks to all those I encountered along the way for all the laughs and successes at the same time.

So tomorrow I’ll be working for the company of my better half, my children and grandchildren, my friends, and of course here at TME. I might be retiring from Newspaper Publishing but I hope to be publishing for a long time to come both here and in other spots. Professionally who knows what’s ahead?

I love it when I have a camera in my hands. It triggers this instinct to LOOK at everything. My head is on a swivel from side to side and up and down. I’ve been known to do 360s walking down the street not to miss something I’ve passed at a different angle. I guess I should be careful doing too many of those at my age.

I’ve been quite lazy in picking the cameras up recently. That will change this weekend. I’m going to try some experimental stuff this evening. Tomorrow I hope to venture out early in the morning and get a few night shots before what is predicted to be a cloudy sunrise if any.

I like painting the town with my camera. But I will attempt to turn my images into some pastel works this year. Photo by Mike Hartley

Then shopping for stocking stuffers and home before most will step out of bed. Some final decorating touches inside and out to wow the grandchildren. A nice meal with my better half, a few chores, and then a good night’s rest to get ready for a long Sunday/Monday.

Let the Holiday Season ROCK.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m excited about cooking more this coming year.
  • My better half said she asked the cashier at the grocery store how it was going. She said the same Christmas song had been stuck on a loop all day long so far. I’m guessing whatever the song is, that it will be barred at all events she attends in the future.
  • My friend gave me a nice bar of Toblerone chocolate last night, I had one piece. I have been doing so well with snacks and treats that I thought I could do the same with this. I was wrong. I’m down to the last 1/4 of the bar. So much for discipline, I’ll have to pass on a meal soon.
  • I need two computer screens. One on my desk and another one upstairs so when I get there I can remind myself what I came up for.
  • Last year UCLA came to Maryland and blew them out of the gym. This year in a few minutes we go to UCLA and I hope the Terps return the favor and run them out. Of course, our team looks worse than last year so far. I’m hoping for the turnaround tonight.

Windblown Monday

What a busy start to the week. I hope those 40-50 mph wind gusts will be behind me today instead of a headwind. We did lose power for a short bit around 4 am and I hope that isn’t a warning for more to come.

As has been the case this year surrounding areas either north or south of us seemed to get hit harder. We have been in a sweet spot this year.

When you get a serious expression of thanks and gratitude for a gift, so much so that you know you made a difference in the person’s day and maybe beyond that, it’s a nice feeling

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Powering through physical pain has its limits. So says pain.
  • I miss my parents a lot this holiday season. I always do each year but more memories seem to be flooding back this year.
  • We are fast approaching my least favorite day of the year. The first day of Winter
  • If you listen to fearmongers all day the likelihood of you being fearful is high.
  • We are a third-world country now because we forgot how to get along together.

Home stretch

A week till Christmas Eve and I’m hoping to be ready and able to relax and enjoy Christmas Day. I love time with the family and that day is so special. I’m not sure if I’m working that night or not yet but it doesn’t matter because I’ll be at peace if everyone is happy and healthy. And with the young ones, they will be crashing before I have to sign on for my last working holiday.

But first, a nasty storm moving up the coast to entertain us this evening and tomorrow morning. 2-3 inches of rain, maybe more, in a fairly short timeframe along with high winds. Might be a test for those new catch ponds protecting Old Ellicott City.

Yesterday was National Wreaths Across America Laying Day. This shot below is from Arlington National Cemetery from a few years ago. I need to get over and visit my parent there before the end of the year. That is one donation I have made for years running but I’m a little late with that this year. But as they say better late than never.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Having a family funeral within a week of Christmas will remind us all how special each one is and how thankful we should be for having another one together.
  • If you want a mentor with a lifetime of experience, visit a senior center.
  • Sometimes you may feel like you’re the only one going through a problem when in reality there may be millions with the same issues.
  • I feel like my schedule is so packed and difficult. And then I see the schedule of my better half and I feel a little better.
