Hoof it

Hoofing it, an old term I used to use when I walked to work some days in my youth. It was fairly common growing up. It just meant to walk someplace. I think that is why most of us were so thin. We walked and ran a lot. And when we were on wheels it was a bicycle.

Well it’s a Monday morning and I’ll be hoofing it again today with lots of walking. Some with my granddaughter, some photographing, and some on the treadmill.

Might as well get moving early. Photo by Mike Hartley

Soon I’ll have to help get breakfast going and then some drawing with my granddaughter. I’ve got an easel set up and I’m going to go over the different types of papers to draw on and the different materials used. And then we will make a few drawings together.

I love helping her explore the arts. I’ve got a camera battery charging for her to take my old digital out and take a few photos and I’ll make prints for her.

I’ve been reading a few things that are making me reevaluate how I’m spending my time. And sometimes making some hard decisions, because it involves people. But I’ve made some things a priority in my life now and I want to complete them.

I’m trying to reduce some things that are time drains. I’ve been steadily dropping my screen time on my smartphone. I don’t want my face in that thing. I’ve got to reduce the time I spend reading on it more though. It would be nice to get that time down to 15-30 minutes a day with just phone, messages, a weather check or two and maybe 2-3 news articles. Not that I’m dropping my news intake, its just easier to read on the computer or listening to something while also working.

But back to people. Another blog by Sadie reminded me of the effort I make to keep in touch with friends that isn’t reciprocated. Maybe they just don’t have time or just don’t care to keep in touch. Either way I’ll be dialing back this year the time I spend keeping in touch with everyone. Like I said I got a new set of priorities.

Not that I’ll completely lose touch bit it probably won’t be as frequent as in the past.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was trying to appreciate the sunrise, but the clouds over the Atlantic ocean weren’t cooperating this morning.
  • People know right from wrong. It’s ignoring the wrong and doing it anyway that makes it really bad. For those people I have no sympathy.
  • I was renamed the Cover Monster by my granddaughter as I used this big quilt to chase and cover her occasionally.
  • Age just keeps bringing on new pain experiences. It’s getting pretty good at perfecting it’s craft.

Sunday Stuff

It has been a wonderful family weekend. And it continues this morning with the children and grandchildren. But eventually everyone will be going home between today and tomorrow. We do have the luck of having one of the grandchildren stay another night tonight.

The more I’m around children, the more I become one again.

We had a wonderful meal at Oscar’s Alehouse in Woodstock last night. It was great. The shrimp and grits I had was excellent along with the steak and cheese egg rolls. Everyone’s meal was on point and service was great.

And that is why I left our server a nice tip. There is a lot of talk about tipping now. I’ve never been a cheap tipper. And when service is real good I go extra. Like yesterday with a couple of small children and a big group.

Watch out for the Beetles this Spring.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I went into a Hallmark store Friday. I’m no spring chicken myself but I was the youngest in there by far. I wonder if the next generation will send cards.
  • There is a wealth of information at your hands. It’s your choice to open them.
  • Not much better than the smell of bacon on a Sunday morning.
  • I found something better. Hugs from my grandson and granddaughter first thing in the morning.

Everyone starts somewhere

Caught this lad early one morning skimboarding (I think it’s called that) on the beach in Ocean City last summer. I feel like I started over a few times this past year and again this new year. Hey, I’ll start a hundred times a year if it results in more progress.

It’s never too early to start practice. Photo by Mike Hartley

So we begin a very busy weekend early this morning. Preparing for a celebrations, sleepovers and sports that will leave me winded by Monday evening. Crap, I just looked at the calendar for the coming week and every weekday is booked with something.

That is okay with me, I need a little interaction. I’m looking forward to some laughs, playing with grandchildren, watching the Terps with a best friend and the easiest doctor’s appointment of them all, the eye doctor (optician) for a check up from the nose up. Along with several other appointments and tasks.

No doctors appointment is really easy. My eyesight has been suffering for over a decade now. The glasses I got last year seem to still be perfect so I hope I haven’t gotten any worse.

In some ways this has been a very productive week. It just hasn’t shown itself here and that feels strange but I’ll take it as a win. And here is another start to a better blog.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A very special day for a very special person.
  • Searching for places to go is fun. Going to them is better.
  • You always remember your parents on their birthdays, if they are here or not.
  • I just can’t get the chill out of the house this morning.
  • I see protecting all citizens in known danger is out the window.

Hit the Wall

Every once in a while the wall of reality checks in with me. Thinking I can just power through most situations or outsmart life.

Well I ran head onto the fact that I can’t go without sleep. I also know I can’t get all the goals I’ve set for myself accomplished unless I change some time dynamics.

If you run into a wall, build on it. Photo by Mike Hartley

So time to regroup, replan, refigure, recalculate, reevaluate and rejoice. Because I will get back on track and do the best I can in the time I’m allotted.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I see hope in the future forecast this morning. But as I walk outside its still 17 degrees.
  • A haircut first thing in the morning is a good way to start the day.
  • Great to see the Maryland Men’s hoop team get a road victory last night.
  • Days that start without sun are less than inspiring.
  • The art of listening is becoming a lost talent.

Fly Strong Today

I’m feeling strong, but I also feels like something is lurking. So there is no alternative but to keep moving forward. I have my work cut out for me today, more than I’ve been doing, but I can adjust.

Life

  • Every time there is a holiday now I get kind of giddy. Because I don’t have to work them anymore.
  • There is nothing fake about a dogs affection towards you.
  • I miss the voice of my granddaughter this morning.
  • If your not extremely comfortable in your home. Think about moving.

Plumbing

  • You’re always working in a space meant for a person half your size.
  • You always need a tool you don’t have.
  • The odds of having a leak are pretty good.
  • The odds of leaving some of my skin on a pipe, wall or beam is good.

Sports

I think I hit a wall last night. I passed out at the kickoff of the National Championship game. That’s about how much interest it held for me last night.

  • Congrats to Ohio State. It looks like money well spent.
  • Only 18 days till pitchers and catchers report for spring training. So says the countdown counter.
  • The problem with the NBA is the games aren’t close anymore and they look like they are going through the motions till they get near the playoffs.
  • College Basketball will help me survive the cold months of February and March.

Politics

I didn’t watch a minute of yesterday’s Inauguration or its coverage. I’m changing the way I handle the next 4 years. The contrast in the two men at the forefront of attention yesterday is remarkable. I don’t want to waste time and energy listening to all the babble. Just what he does and doesn’t do.

  • I don’t agree with the pardons of the Jan 6 rioters and it disgusts me.
  • Pausing the ban on Tik Tok, proves again national security means nothing to him.
  • I don’t agree with ending birthright citizenship.
  • I don’t agree with implementing Scheduled F affecting federal civil servants.
  • I disagree with the withdraw from the World Health Organization and Paris Climate agreement.
  • The mandate to have federal workers return to the office 5 days a week is shortsighted.

Creating

  • I like to create each day.
  • Creating, makes me feel alive.
  • I love when I start something and then it spins off several other ideas.
  • I didn’t do art for a long time because I was concerned what other people would think. Stupid
  • Life creates restraints that you should ignore as an artist.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s cold
  • It’s too cold.
  • I can’t think when it’s this cold outside, so I stay inside.
  • If I had a temperature gauge I bet it wouldn’t register this morning.
  • But remember, its never too cold for a bowl of ice cream. Just put some hot fudge on it if your chilled.

Travel beckons

I’m pulling together a list of travel ideas for future consideration. And being the new year is here I’m ready to pursue those locations. When I saw the picture of this spot it really got me itching to get away. This picture is nothing like the rain, sleet and snow coming down from cloud covered skies this past weekend.

That call of the ocean, one of my favorite spots in the state of Maryland is the eastern shore be it the bay or ocean. It’s only mid January and I can hear that whisper “where are you, Mike?”

We have stayed here a few times but prices have risen, as with everything.

I could easily live at the beach, even year-round, only the love of my children and grandchildren keeps me rooted in Howard County. Along with a few very close friends.

Some might think I am living at the beach because I do plan on beating a path back and forth quite a bit from April till October.

I’m sitting here envisioning it because I’m chomping at the bit and drawing on my reserve of memories of hot summer days with the top down and that smell of the salt air as I cross the bridge into town.

Targets

Hitting that sweet spot on a target feels good. I didn’t hit all my exercise goals every day last week but I did exercise each day and maintained my previous standard and had 3 days of matching new goals. Adding more miles, is adding more time commitment. There’s the rub.

I see none of this in the 10 day forecast and if I’m lucky I won’t see any more. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m maintaining the communication targets I try to keep with family and friends. But as the grandchildren get older I’ll have to increase time with them. I’ve already started to send the kindergartener cards and letters by mail.

I’ve certainly missed my target of shooting new images this year so far. Some days okay, some not so good. I’ve been to the workroom for 4 days straight now and sanding a few projects. And I got back to work on the abstract pastel I started a while back.

I’ve missed my target of 4 posts a day. Kind of unrealistic in some ways given all that balls I have in the air at one time. But in other ways it is very simple. I could just get back to posting some images without a lot of words and that doesn’t take much time at all.

With a third of the month remaining, there is much to do. But getting my priorities right and not wasting time is the key to success.

MLK Monday

A manic start to a Monday. Oh that is right, it’s a holiday today to celebrate MLK day. I thought I’d look up a few quotes from the man and share them. And at the same time increase my knowledge of the man.

To our Legislators. –

“Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

From Strength to Love.

To our Educators –

“Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”

Martin Luther King Jr. wrote this in the “The Purpose of Education,” a 1947 article for Morehouse College’s student newspaper.

To all of us –

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

From his 1963 book, Strength to Love.

For myself –

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

From his 1957 speech in Montgomery, Alabama.

Another one for me to remember –

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”

From his 1965 sermon delivered in Selma, Alabama.

It seems we may have entered this period again –

“History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”

From his 1959 address at the Fourth Annual Institute on Nonviolence and Social Change.

Sustained Effort

Looks like a busy Sunday evening ahead. Two more miles to go on the treadmill to meet today’s goal. Another game to watch this evening. And then outside to remove the snow and ice from the walks, driveway and vehicles.

Sports

Each year I remind myself mid-season to tempter my expectations. Especially when it comes to college basketball and the University of Maryland basketball teams. Sports, even college and high school have such high expectations of winning all the time, and when you don’t you’re bums. Well not really, but a segment of the population looks at it like that.

Nothing but net. Photo by Mike Hartley

Don’t get me wrong, I think and hope they can win every game they play. When they play well early in the season which they often do, then expectations build. There was a win today but it wasn’t pretty and I’m sure made many more than me think we may have thought we were better than we were. No disrepect meant towards the Nebraska program which played very hard and smart today.

The wonderful thing about college sports is how well teams of young people jell and mature throughout the year or don’t. There are a dozen games left in the regular season. More than enough to make an impression and be invited to the Dance in March. I hope it’s a special one this year.

Some see these kids as pampered athletes, they still are affected like you and me when traveling, which they do a lot of. They have studying and tests to take. Most are 18-22 years old and still developing physically and mentally.

So while the mental lapses are frustrating. And the effort sometimes might seem lacking. Or that they are pushing too hard at the wrong times or being impatient. I’ll hope for the best, try to point out the positives which there are many.

This is a team that if it were to gell, has the potential to go very deep into the tournament.

Food

I love tacos. My better half makes up a good taco dinner. But we started last night at La Palapa Too Mexican Grill & Cantina off John Hopkins Road with some Shrimp Tacos which were very good. My friends had the Fritias and they looked and smelled great. Tonight some meat tacos and the spicy shells I like.

Weather

I’m not ready for that cold tonight, but I’ll power through it. And when I say power through it, not with power tools, but by hand and shovel. I just stepped outside to see what its like and it’s bitter. I’ll have to see if I have the energy in the morning to maybe get out and take some images.

Flying in

The first nice day we get this year, I’m going to head to Ocean City for some sun, sand, and ice cream sodas. One of my best friends said that is a long drive for a day trip. It’s a little less than 3 hours each way so it’s no big deal for me.

Hell, I used to spend a minimum of 2 1/2 hours a day, getting back and forth from work on a good day. Plus, I love to drive that car with the top down. And if I get tired on the way home, I have some old friends in Easton that I could stop and see and recharge if needed. For me, not the car. You won’t catch me driving an EV.

This cold weather leaves me depressed. The beach draws me like a magnet and always has. I love photographing there and have a big series of images on one of my basement walls. I don’t mind going in the offseason at all but I want it to be comfortable enough to be outside. And that day looks to be a while off.

Actually, the first trip will probably be with my better half. We do need to get away for a day or two soon. The next two weeks are just too cold to be out at the ocean. And we are pretty busy anyway. Maybe the next month or two. Better yet a destination closer near by with some indoor activities.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love sports. I get wrapped up in my favorite teams. I also remind myself it’s just a game.
  • Two local teams in the NFL playoffs, NICE.
  • Don’t think, DO
  • More shoveling tomorrow. oh boy.

Local Social

A relaxing morning, a great lunch at Black Flag Social House Brewery Restaurant in Marriottsville yesterday. It was our first visit there and we will be back. We now have two local spots we love, Oscars Ale House in the Waverly Shopping Center and now Black Flag at the corner of Rt 99 and Marriottsville Road.

Yesterday’s meal was great. We had the Bourbon Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. This is an appetizer we have had at many establishments in this state and more. These were the best we could remember. The shrimp were very large and the bacon done just right. The sauce was great.

We each got a pizza, one Shroom’d with Roasted Shiitake, Cremini, Maitake, Truffle Oil, Fontina, Everything Bagel Spice for my better half and I had the Carnivore pizza that had House Sauce, Pepperoni, Sausage, Bacon, Ricotta & House Cheese Blend.

It had been a while since I had finished a pizza by myself. This was no problem. The problem I faced which I hadn’t had in ages was to save the last slice for later because it was so good or finish it. There wasn’t a long thought process before it was gone.

The beer and wine lists looked like they could keep many happy. I’ll bring my son next time for the beer review. I can’t wait to try out the outdoor deck seating when it warms up. It’s not a huge memu but it has a great number of things I like that are still to be tried. I’m sure we will visit again very soon and next time I’ll try not to come in famished and pick up the camera before the fork or fingers.

Have a great morning.

Hopeful

I’m so hoping that that it can be a good Friday. It’s the only day my better half and I don’t have other plans this whole week. So we can make of the day, what we will. That’s a nice feeling to start the day with. At least I know I can fit my exercise in throughout the day and evening.

I hate being strapped for time. It seemed I lived my life in that mode. It’s so nice to have some control over it again. Having removed the bounds of employment, the ability to take in that deep breath of life is so sweet each morning.

The clock in my old area of IT. Guess they couldn’t find anything to anchor it to the concrete pilar. I was always entertained by their solution. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m hopeful my better half is feeling good and would like to get out. She has been on the move a lot lately, so I could also understand her wanting to just relax at home and if that is what makes her happy than that is what we will do today.

I don’t mind a day relaxing myself. Especially with a busy weekend ahead. I’ve got to get the attic project going again. Taking the last two items (kids first bikes) out and then start to remove and seal off attic ceiling fan. And I need to schedule another estimate for adding insulation.

Finding dozens of things to keep busy with, is no problem. And I’m thinking cooking might be one of them because I’m hungry.

Recently I had a friend say to me. “I’m not retiring and sitting around the house all day doing nothing.” And I felt for him in many ways. I don’t know if it was the limited preparation and thought, I took before it happened. Or if it was just my attitude going into it. Maybe it was the anticipation of having a chance to complete something I wanted early in life, but didn’t seize the opportunity.

Of course part of the excitement of retirement for me that other can’t always share because of distance is the fact I have my children and grandchildren within driving distance. Not short, but doable. And the extra time with them has been wonderful. Tiring but wonderful.

And the simple fact I don’t report to anyone but #1, not me stupid, my better half. Not because she is in charge, were partners. And we share being boss which takes the pressure off sometimes when needed. Because life in retirement can be challenging also.

Time to move on and maximize the remaining 15 hours of the day here.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • You learn more by letting others talk and listening.
  • I’ve been using Chapstick more and more this winter yet my lips are still chapped. Either I’m not using it enough or this stuff doesn’t work. I think I hear Mother Nature laughing.
  • It was difficult watching Maryland lose in overtime last night. But they live to play another day.
  • I think I’m practicing great restraint not using this blog as a daily critique of this ultra cold weather and sharing my feelings about it. But seeing the 7 day forecast, be prepared for a RANT.
  • Being sidetracked from tasks for fun, is fun again in my senior years now. Sort of what I remember it being like when I was very young. You could step away from things without serious consequences.

Untapped Energy

I’m found an untapped source of energy this evening. Maybe it’s the hard driving Rock and Roll I’ve been listening to. That has always been one part of my inspiration in life among many things.

Sometimes it’s certain lyrics, or an amazing guitar riff, or the rolling bass or thundering drums. Maybe a horn section or a wizard on the keyboards. Every vocal instrument from Steven Tyler’s screams and harmonica to the operatic Freddie Mercury and piano.

This world needs more music. I know I need more music. It makes me feel good. It makes me think. It makes me move. It’s a great exercise companion. It helps me know I can. It aids me in imagining something special. It takes me to a place of tranquility. It can inspire me with untapped courage. It makes me feel passion. And oh, my can it fly through the gears on a stick shift like nobody’s business.

I love music and now that I have time to really enjoy lots of it instead of snippets here and there. You know having to turn it down or off to concentrate on life’s questions or tasks. I got far less of those so if I want to duck walk around the house like Chuck Berry or Angus Young I certainly can. I’m far less stressed so if I want to play drums like Neil Peart while sitting on the tractor cutting the yard, so be it.

Or maybe just sit back and tap my foot to some groups doing unplugged versions of hits that are rhythmic masterpieces. Or maybe sit and listen to “Wish you were Here” by Pink Floyd and maybe shed a tear for those I miss dearly.

I’ve been to a good number of concerts over the years. Most of them are in my younger years but I think I’ll check out a few more this summer. But tonight, it’s been a concert in Woodstock.

The books are under way. Daily writing on these projects is now part of the day. I’m working on 3 separate efforts and progress is good. I wrote a lot this evening.

I shot a bucket list item tonight. I’ll post those photos later in the morning.

I’m not detecting the first light of day yet, so sunrise is a bit off. Let me switch from my nocturnal self and morph into the day walker environment.

And on a bah humbug note. I’m not thrilled about the very cold temps and forecasted snow.

The fountain of life

Living and Loving each day is the fountain of life. Some days are filled with both. Those are good ones.

Outside the Gaylord Hotel at the National Harbor. Photo by Mike Hartley

Today was one of those. It felt good so I think I’ll put it on repeat tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I said “I love you” to my kids this morning by email. It’s much better by phone or in person.
  • There are 7 pairs of glasses in my office. I thought the 4 on my 2 desks were a lot till I saw the 3 pair of sunglasses in the bookcase.
  • I’m working on challenging my property tax appraisal. I think I have a case. Just like I did last time when I got it reduced. But they have the say and the power.
  • There is a hosts of places I’m thinking about eating tomorrow for lunch. But I’m thinking BBQ

Shake that tree

Good morning fellow frozen ice cubes. A balmy 18 degrees with a feels like temp of -8. when I started writing this in central Maryland. I’m going to create some warmth with the morning workout and then I’m going to shake the creative tree today and see what falls out.

And low and behold, the song Low Rider by the group War came on as I was editing a few Miata club meeting photos. A nice combination to thaw out the chill in the air in my office. My baby is under the cover and freezing outside. I wish I had a garage. Even more I wish it was warm and I was pointing it EAST with the top down and not stopping till I hit the Atlantic Ocean.

Maryland Miata Club meet. Photo by Mike Hartley

The first warm day we get this year that is what is going to happen. It will be a spur of the moment call one morning. And I’ll be gone, like we would do in our youth with the infamous “ROAD TRIP”. We used the phrase a few years before Animal House made it famous as I’m sure other before us had.

Sorry about getting sidetracked, back to the creative endeavors. Today is a great opportunity for progress, and maybe completing the beach project. The goal this year is to be a better finisher. Having a lot of things competing for my interest is sometimes a distraction, and also a help if I run into a block in one area.

Interesting life observation. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I’ll go add a few things to that pastel drawing I’m working on before hitting the treadmill. I’ve got some shots from last night to download and process. After a few miles and some weights I’m going to crank up the color printer and exhaust my paper supply.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Taking that next shot is better than thinking about that next shot.
  • Made a great fettuccini dish with red pepper, mushrooms and bacon last night. The point now is I’m trying to avoid having the leftovers for breakfast it was so good.
  • There is a time and a place and that time is now and that place is here. At least for me.
  • Almost time for another beautiful sunrise over the ocean.

Keys

Yeah, that’s right, the magic keyboard. The slayer of sentences. The pounder of the paragraph. The crusher of chapters. The builder of books. And then I thought what if I couldn’t use that tool? That gave me a pause.

What triggered this thought was when I sat down a few weeks back, my nerve pain overwhelmed my arms and hands, and I couldn’t work for a few minutes and was slowed for hours. What an unsettling feeling.

I’ve got to adapt my photography by using a tripod more. Weight was certainly a big factor in my last purchase. I won’t be leaving home without the monopod and tripods if I’m using the Nikons for any duration of time. Old man, slow lens = tripod if I want sharp shots.

And then I thought as I always do, how do I adapt if needed? Getting older is a lot of adapting. Things you took for granted for decades are suddenly an issue. Pain and eyesight are a few I fight.

The eye doctor’s appointment at the end of the month should help with the latter. And I’ll power through the rest and adapt.

Today we are battling the cold. I’m headed out this afternoon for a few minutes of photography combined with exercise because I’d love to find a spot to hike down and get some partially frozen streams.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Something that can make you feel old. The invitation to your 50th high school reunion.
  • I love that deer use my lower back yard as their beds in the winter. Looking out and seeing 2-8 sleeping is nice.
  • Sometimes I’m thinking about tomorrow, but today I’m thinking about today. But in a few minutes, I could be thinking about yesterday. But then there is next week.
  • I’ve got to get back to work on 2 carvings and finish them this week. So off I go.

Monday’s are fine with me

Start that wheel spinning. We’re off to another adventure, spinning with the earth’s rotation. I thought it was an open week till I checked with my better half. I think there is one free day in it. Being retired can be quite busy. Much busier than I thought it would be but that’s okay also. Keeps me sharp and moving.

I long for a summer breeze while riding this. Photo by Mike Hartley

I paused yesterday with a headache that started in the afternoon and wasn’t gone till this morning. Good thing I had the sense to tape that late playoff game which was a classic and watch it this morning. Watching games tape delayed and being able to fast forward through those commercials and still not knowing who won the game before watching it is the way to go some nights.

The treadmill looks like the option this morning being it’s a brisk 22 degrees outside. I’m trying to up my daily mileage starting this fine Monday morning.

I’ve also got to get back to work here and on my photo site so those will be the efforts today between other obligations. Oh yeah, can’t forget to watch the University of Maryland basketball team play this evening.

Have a fine morning all.

Appointment

Do you ever have an appointment you wish you didn’t have to keep. I get a few of those a year for medical checkups that I don’t care about. It’s not so much the appointment itself it’s the possible ramifications.

It’s like going to a casino in some ways, give some blood or take another test and spin the wheel of results. I got one of these coming up. I’ve got a busy schedule between now and then, so I won’t dwell on it all the time but it’s in the back of my head.

Many are wandering around thinking about that next appointment. Many have so many appointments they blur together.

At the hospitals waiting rooms I always try to be very positive and smile. I see a few others doing the same, but I see more that are having trouble smiling. Either due to concern or knowing results and there for treatments.

So how do I react to this? Getting to work is usually a good one and employed often. Adding some music to the mix is also helpful. Focusing on another aspect of life for enjoyment. And I’ve got some of that planned with friends and family.

It’s a waste of time thinking and writing about it. I should get busy and put the morning to good use.

I need to make each days outlook this bright. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling good about the exercise start to the day.
  • Doesn’t it make you wonder how much money gambling is raking in if they can afford to advertise more than pharmaceuticals, insurance and energy. I don’t know that for a fact but it certainly feels like it some days.
  • An old friendship was on the mend. And then came politics again.
  • I wanted to make a snowman but these past snows weren’t good snowman material.
  • I wonder how much further the rule of law can bend. We might be on our way of finding out.

Fresh

An inch or two of fresh snow fell overnight. That means a quick shovel at daylight and cleaning the cars off so when it freezes later tonight I won’t deal with ice. This looks like the last snow for a bit but some colder than normal weather is still forecast for next week.

I’m entering survival mode now. I can’t stand cold and it’s colder than normal for what seems longer than normal. And were only on the 11th day of the month. It’s possible I’ve shoveled more snow in the last few days than the last few years.

I was a bit stiff so I laid down for an hour or so this morning before going out and low and behold a neighbor did the driveway with his front end loader and my better half did the cars and edging. What a nice treat.

A promise to my better half this month was to hit the movies. I think we are going to see A Complete Unknown, about Bob Dylan. I need to take her to the movies more. She likes that activity. Maybe we’ll put that on the schedule this coming week.

We don’t get gifts except for stocking stuffers for each other. But I did give her a number of tickets to redeem with me for activities like the movies this month. I plan to honor all of them.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Listen to the music, smile to the music, move to the music.
  • It’s daylight so I had better get the shovel in hand and have at it.
  • I have a taste for Italian food today.
  • Sam Moore of Sam and Dave, may you RIP.

Life and death and life

A day of contrast ahead for me. I’m very excited about having time today to work on my hobbies and create. I’m feeling a bit better than yesterday, I hope that isn’t just the morning energy masking something but I’m going with the feeling.

This stage of life always presents more loss because it’s just the way life works. People get old and pass. After all this good feeling this morning and lots of shooting and maybe some drawing and carving, I’ll get ready to go to a viewing of an old friend.

After that I’ll come home and watch the Maryland basketball game and feel upbeat again. I think that is a lesson I’m learning gradually. It’s okay to get living again quickly while also mourning those who have passed.

Because we should get on with living each day to its maximum potential. I haven’t been too good at this in the past, but over time I’ve gotten a bit better. Each passing seems to take a chip out of my heart. Sometimes I’ve been able to rebuild, sometimes not.

Each year there is a loss. This one will be no different. One of my best friends last year had so many services to attend I remember him talking about how draining and difficult it was a few weeks ago.

I belong to a couple of alumni groups from former employers. I love looking at photos and memories people share, and I contribute also from my stash of history but the number of people passing is disheartening at times to where you open the group with trepidation.

Cool Friday Start

I watched a beautiful sunrise on the Atlantic Ocean this morning from one of the webcams in Ocean City MD. There is still snow on the beach and boardwalk there. And some more on the way later today.

It’s time to trim the beard before I start looking like Grizzly Adams. Even though it does provide a little extra warmth at this time of year.

In looking at the images of the devastation in California, it has moved me to make a donation to the Red Cross this morning. Someone has to start asking the question, “should we build here” when these events happen. They asked those questions after other disasters like Katrina. I hear insurance was difficult to get even before the fires. It’s going to be impossible for anyone to get it in the future.

Other parts of the country could be in store for more events like this. The population of many coastlines are in jeopardy. And its far from the only area of the country that experienced drought.

Had a few friends visit outside my back slider door this morning. This guy had me in his sights. It’s so friggin cold out today they would sit, duck and close their eyes at times when the wind would gust. Then just as fast hop up and fly away.

If my mom were alive I could call her and ask what they were, and she would know. I did keep a few books of hers, and I think one was a guide to birds. I might have to go rummage around for that if I intend to keep posting wildlife.

I love to blog but I need to improve my content. I started off this year trying to increase the number of posts I do each day. My goal was 4 a day. I’m averaging 2.6 so far. Good thing I caught myself slacking already 10 days into the year.

The thought was the more post would inspire me to do more photography. It does but that is an additional production to fit into the day.

Time is mostly the limitation, but not utilizing my time correctly is another. I’m good at starting early and getting the first post out most days. And sometimes a follow-up one before noon. But the second half of the day, I’ve been allowing too many distractions.

I have increased communications with some people which is a good thing but it takes time. I’m also trying to read and learn more which is great, but producing at the same time is difficult.

Of course there is life which gets in the way. Doctors appointments, social visits, babysitting, appealing my property tax, insurance comparisons, to mention just a few this week.

But I will get back to my goal and at the same time try to get some better content.

Cruise Control

I woke this morning not feeling 100% so I’m going to take it easy today. No morning walk outside being it’s 17 degrees with a stiff wind making it feel below 0. So I watched the sunrise cam in Ocean City this morning while tending to some office cleanup.

That snow is blowing off the roofs today with those winds. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m waiting for the Tylenol to quell the pounding headache. Once that happens I can get back to some hobby fun. I had grand plans for last night but they fell by the wayside. I couldn’t get warm and huddled under a few blankets and being I was in the recliner that didn’t last long before I got up and went to bed.

I can’t get over the devastation and pain so many are suffering in California from those fires.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Snow will tell you how much wildlife you have around your home. It looks like a small army has marched through my back yard.
  • I always had this feeling my children were growing up too fast. I’m getting that same feeling now with my grandchildren.
  • I wonder when peoples breaking point will come with so many stupid things going on the highways.
  • It’s depressing not seeing a day in the long term forecast that will allow this snow to melt.

Up and Out

Good timing this morning in taking the car to the garage for a tire issue. Caught the sunrise off Woodstock Road going towards Route 99. On the way home it was in the clouds already.

The phone camera is good in a pinch. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m not enjoying the cold, but I am enjoying getting out early in the day. I think I’ll try to make a habit of it this year. I’m always up early, but this home is so comfortable it’s hard to leave it.

Photography Journey Day 68 – 1/8/25

You may have noticed I skipped a few days/weeks update. It’s not that I’m not editing, shooting, uploading, downloading, admiring my new monopod, reading or unsuccessfully trying some new settings. I’m just not disciplined as I need to be with updates, so I’m hoping back on the wagon.

This morning I’m reading Street Photography Tips from StreetsOfNuremberg.com – this is an area of my photography that I need to practice much more of. So hopefully some more work will be shown here soon.

Also working on finishing up the holiday prints for family. That will be another 50 easily. Then upload the high-def batch to the family vault.

There is a good chance I’ll get out and do some more snow shooting today. I’ve already stepped out back and shot some snow drift patterns. Trouble is I have one of those sinus headaches going strong.

Mid Week Blues

I was searching for some inspiration looking through some of my older shots, and came across this one. It fit my morning being I’m just feeling a little out of focus. I’m trying to get the body comfortable with limited success.

I’d like to be as flexible as those pedals. Do I miss those days where I get in about any position. And the only way to get near that again is to keep working on it, and I’ll continue to apply myself at that goal.

I see the feels like temp is 2 degrees outside. I can attest to that fact as I went out to warm up the cars.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m one of those people missing out on all the benefits of coffee. Never drank a cup and therefore never contributed to the Starbucks of the world.
  • I think I’ll spend some time cooking today.
  • It also feels like a good day for drawing.
  • I don’t see a problem eating ice cream on a very cold day.
  • Change is good if it makes you feel good.

Chop Chop

I need to get back in gear. A great start to the day, but I faded fast. Working out in the cold can take it out of me. I can work all day out in the heat. Not the cold though. That first 3 hours of the day outside was like 8.

Then off to an important meeting and I had to engage the brain after that physical work this morning. By this afternoon I was toast and took some comfort in the recliner. Been fighting a headache the last few days.

So tonight I get back in the swing. Some treadmill time to get the blood moving. Some music to get me inspired and a relaxed mind to create.

I hope to do a few more posts tonight. Maybe on some medical thoughts, maybe just a few more images I run across editing some previous work. It could be a rant on drivers passing on blind spots on our single lane road and what I’ll do to them if we meet. Or maybe thoughts on the conversation I’m going to have with a neighbor who likes to speed through the neighborhood. I wonder how much a set of spike strips cost? Just kidding, I’ll have a rational conversation with them first.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hate missing calls from friends.
  • Beef Stew is a hearty cold weather dinner.
  • I made a lunch date with my daughter which gave me a smile for a long while today.
  • I love the way sun makes snow sparkle.
  • Each time I think my knee is improving, I tweak it and we begin again.
  • I saw a video of my granddaughter sledding and giggling on the way down. That was the sweetest sounds I heard all day.
  • Again my hearty thanks to people keeping the roads clear and all those struggling in less than good conditions to goods to market.

Uncle

The second shoveling got to me this morning. The wind really blew a lot back in the driveway, and there was fresh snow from last night to clear. I began the shoveling around 5:15am and finished about 7am. It wasn’t quite daylight yet and sunrise was still 30 minutes off.

I took a shot of the plow going up our street. I was fumbling for my glasses and had in on manual focus from something I was doing inside last night. I tried to adjust but without the glasses I just shot. Sorry for the focus problem on shot one.

Thank you Howard County workers. Photo by Mike Hartley

I took a walk trying to stretch out a bit. I was smart enough to take the camera with me. But I was a bit concerned because it still is icy and the side of the roads are still deep.

Photos by Mike Hartley

It’ didn’t feel as cold as the temps indicated. I guess I dressed correctly for the weather. Though carrying the camera with bare hands that last 30 minutes was a bit chilly.

Up the street I went where one neighbor still has some holiday decorations out.

I’m going to start getting out for the sunrise more often. I’ll see how good I am at that by posting the beginning of the day here.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’d rather be walking in the hot sand in flip flops than cold snow in boots.
  • There is a beautiful quiet to snow. We all have heard it.
  • Taking a swing at some abstract art for the first time. It’s interesting.
  • Got an important meeting today.

White stuff

It’s hard to replicate all the muscles used in snow shoveling. A few are sore, most are doing okay but we have another round to go. I should be finished snowing by 11pm and I’ll go out and do the final clean of cars, driveway and walks. Till then some dinner and more rest.

I love it when school is cancelled for snow days. That means my daughter and daughter in-law who are teachers get a break and get to spend the time with their own children. Days they can just focus on each other and fun.

The beach is snowed in real well this evening looking at some of the Ocean City Webcams. So I thought I’d run a picture I took on a warmer day with what looked like a family fishing together one morning. I’d rather be standing in the white stuff they are than snow.

Random Thoughts of the Evening

  • Sad day in our countries history.
  • Feeling refreshed after that afternoon nap.
  • Cutting down on my screen time on my phone is a priority. I want to keep well less than an hour a day.
  • I get along with myself much better than I did as a youth.

White Monday

I woke a little earlier than usual today 1:30am. I did get 4 hours sleep and that is about the max I sleep at any time. After about 15 minutes of contemplating if I should go back to sleep I got up and here we are at the Station to start preparing the first blast of the day.

I expected to see some snow on the ground but its just starting to fall now at 2:30. I know there is a lot of you out there that are fed up with the totals you got already and are saying UNCLE. And for those fighting the ice my heart goes out to you. We have been in those bands before.

Power outages for days in this weather are not nice. I remember one year where the family went to my wife’s parents and I stayed home with the pet. We slept together in front of the fireplace. I miss not having a pet. They are great friends.

I just remembered I haven’t worn my old one piece snowsuit since I lost all this weight. It was difficult to get into before. I’m looking forward to sliding right into it and not struggling to get the zipper up.

Random Thoughts of the Early Morning

  • I love the quiet outside when its snowing. Especially in the middle of the night. I’ll be outside shortly.
  • The first snow cover is when winter is beautiful to me.
  • Doing extra stretching now to get the body ready for the days physical workout.
  • Time to charge the camera batteries and get some breakfast to charge myself.

In the air

You can feel the coming snow in the air. Later tonight as I’m shoveling, I’ll be feeling it for real. Been a long time since I’ve had that youthful feeling in snow. If it’s deep enough, I’ll go for making a snow angel. The snowboard of my sons and the disk will stay in the shed.

Actually, I’m looking forward to being out in it early this morning. I love starting the day anywhere from 2-4 am. This seems to be the sweet spot my body and mind like to start. It isn’t the same cycle other family or friends are on but I’ve been marching to others schedules for decades and now I can make my own.

But it will be good timing for the snow. If it starts around 10 about half of it will be down by 3 or 4am and I’ll be out with the shovel. I’ll probably be helping an elderly neighbor or two later in the day so at least I’ll have mine done early and some time to rest and catch my breath.

I saw these geese coming in for a landing to join their friends already on the pond. The clouds are rolling in and soon all air traffic will take a pause as the storm goes by.

Landing gears please. The Woodstock Airport is still open. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Always depressing taking the tree out after the holidays.
  • I’m having to listen to the Maryland basketball game on the radio because its being streamed.
  • There are some things that leave lasting impressions in life. Most of them I smile about, some not.
  • Felt good to exceed my exercise goal today.
  • Looking for some positive energy. I’m just not working hard enough for it yet today.

Up and smiling

Lots of stuff could be better but I’m up and smiling this morning. Looking forward to some exercise and working on my hobbies today. I’m having trouble deciding if I’m going to make the Miata club meeting this afternoon. I’m sure they are going to be treating the roads, and my ride is all clean under the cover right now.

On the other hand, the roads are going to be a real mess with snow for at least a week with nothing above freezing happening in the 7 day forecast, so this is my last chance. It’s so strange driving that car with the top up anyway.

Well, I’ll contemplate that dilemma later, right now I have some good music inspiring the morning and thinking of the possibilities. So, I took a break from writing and decided to continue the editing project and the song “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith came on as I opened this photo.

A good reminder to keep it slow and steady.

Determination. Photo by Mike Hartley

And here I was tempted to throw this guy away before that moment. He’s a visitor each summer and made me wonder how old these box turtles live. Google says 25-35 years but possible up to 100. I’ll just look at it like we are sharing the land.

I’ve almost hit him a few times in the yard with the mower. That’s another thing I don’t like about these lawn services with the huge mowers that go so fast. They aren’t worried about what might be in the way. I stop for snakes, turtles, frogs.

I should get some exercise and finish a post about a co-worker who left the job. Have a great morning all.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • 37 Days and 18 hours till Spring Training opens. Hey Hey Baseball
  • Once the cold gets in my body it’s hard to get out.
  • I had better brush up on my snow settings in the camera. It’s been a great while since we have seen significant snow.
  • All people change over time. Just watch out for which direction that is.

Have a ball

I heard someone say it’s the weekend and time to cut loose. Well, I can have a ball as well as the next person. Got a ton of them in the basement for the grandkids. That isn’t the type of ball I think they were referring to.

I think I’ll have to put that thought of having a ball on hold for a few more hours but after that I think I’m in step with the idea. Why not, life is short.

I do have some more exercise to fit in this evening along with a few more posts. Feeling good about keeping up with those goals so far. I’d been neglecting the workroom so I even did a few minutes of sanding today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When things change, change with it.
  • This cold is for the penguins.
  • It’s nice to have someone to be happy with, but don’t rely on it. Know how to be happy yourself.
  • Cold gives me headaches.
  • I wonder how I get my hopes more closely aligned with reality. Then again, why should I.
  • Sometimes I make mistakes. The volume of them depends what facet of life we are talking about.

Wrong tool

This might have worked for that dusting yesterday, but the shovels will be needed Monday. The wind blew the rake into the fence.

I don’t think my logic of waiting for the snow to melt instead of shoveling it will work this week. It’s going to be far too cold for that to happen. Photo by Mike Hartley

I see Ocean City even got a dusting of snow yesterday, looking at the white boardwalk this morning as the sun is beginning to rise and low and behold a jogger runs by on the Howard Johnsons Oceanfront Webcam. On a cold morning like this with the feels like temp nearing single digits. I’ll watch that warm sunrise from the comfort of my slightly chilly basement this morning.

The snow won’t be the only thing falling soon. I’m taking the Christmas trees and lights down today which is kind of depressing to start a Saturday with but it has to be done. I took a shot of each before starting the process.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Finally a good night’s sleep.
  • Today we overcome and adapt. Or maybe watch a little football.
  • If I get out more I can say “did you see that” more in my blog.
  • If you got a moment to smile, take advantage of it.

We think We do

I realized how nobody knows me recently. They know pieces or aspects of me. Some might think they know me well. I had a pet that knew me well because we used to have lots of talks. My better half probably knows most of me, but is still far from the whole person.

Which got me thinking about how well I know others. I decided I need to get better at this. So part of my 2025 goals were reading and learning so I got a book called “How to Know a Person” by David Brooks. I’ll begin reading this today and let you know what I think in a later post.

I get to see my son and grandson for a few hours this morning. Which reminds me I haven’t made prints from our family gathering. And looking at my paper supply, I had better make an order soon. All these logistical tasks really get in the way of creativity.

I’m looking for that peaceful easy feeling this morning. But it’s proving illusive. I’ll have to see how morning back pain and a 2-year-old mix. I’ll report back this afternoon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Getting lost in a song, feels so good.
  • I know what day it is when I go to take my daily meds.
  • Doing is more therapeutic than planning.
  • Look for the opportunity in every moment. That doesn’t mean you can’t look for the opportunity to relax also.

Yes and No

I was searching through some old shots in Ellicott City and ran across this car shot of a Plymouth Prowler. I almost just trashed it, but I continued to look at it. One it’s a convertible which always interests me. Second the throwback styling also caught my eye. The colors they put on this were also very stunning.

But I never investigated one as a car I’d like to own even though they do attract me. So, this morning I saw why this vehicle failed to catch on. A weak motor and only an automatic transmission. The execs at Plymouth should have had their butts canned for those two decisions alone.

You don’t build a car that looks like that, put some meaty tires in the back and have it be a SLUG. It’s 0-60 is 7.1 seconds. My stock 2016 Miata does it in 5.9. And in the quarter mile I read its 15.3 to the Miata 14.5 seconds.

It should be illegal to build something that looks that good but can’t do a burnout. Sorry, I never knew before why it didn’t have more appeal till, I did some reading today.

This one below is a beauty, and I love his plate “SURREAL” and it’s a rag top with an older couple like we are cruising on a beautiful summer day so I won’t end with negative vibes, but on a positive thought. I wonder if a Hellcat Hemi fits in there.

Love the styling. Photo by Mike Hartley

Kickoff

After the 2024 year with the WordPress Daily Writing Prompt I’ve decided to move onto my own mind and not rely on something like that. Or at least that is my hope. Finding things to explore in a variety of topics or observations or trains of thought.

Despite the title it doesn’t have anything to do with football, even though that topic will be broached in the future. It’s the kickoff of a new year and new possibilities.

So, I’ll start with a simple one. In November and December, I was doing some photography along the Patapsco River along Howard and Baltimore counties. The scenic photos got good notice but what really got people’s attention, was an area people were using as a dump.

It got me thinking about my photography and how I might use that in the future to help change things. If nothing else, it sheds a light on what could improve or use help. And I’m putting a trash bag in my car so when I’m out in nature I can pick up a bit from those less considerate of the world we live in.

I was also looking at the train bridge that crosses River and Ilchester Roads. From an inexperienced structural engineer, that one looks suspect. So maybe while I’m doing structural photography, I could help our infrastructure engineers maybe catch a weak spot before something happens.

I’ll capture the homeless if out and about. Another problem so few seem concerned with.

Homeless but not helpless.

I am out of balance with my complaining and actions. If I spend more time trying to correct things, then I have no problem shedding my light and opinion on things. But if I’m not lifting my own weight, it’s a bit hypocritical.

So here’s to capturing some more images that focus not just on problems but some solutions and actions along the way. Anything I can start doing to make a positive difference.

Happy New YEAR

Sorry I’m a few hours late with the well wishes for the New Year but we were babysitting our grandson so his parents could attend a party with longtime friends. We only saw a few people that might have had a few too many on the beltway around Baltimore on the way home.

The police were active with one pulled over and another on his way to get someone because he came blowing by me.

The fireworks of Hong Kong at New Years were incredible. I haven’t been out in years to see any, maybe next year. Photo by Mike Hartley

Today is the start of a whole new set of goals. And none of them are from the JOB. That is sweet and invigorating at the same time. There are few things, like setting your own agenda and carrying it out.

Of course some are common with many people. Exercise for instance. I have goals for this blog. I averaged a little over 2 posts a day over the last year and my goal is to double that number in 2025.

There is so much swirling around in this head to do I had better get working on some more of it. There is a 2025 challenge that needs to be posted this morning, and that one is going to take another hour or so. I’ve got about 80 images to finish editing and a couple hours of sleep would be nice sometime.

I hope you all made it home safe tonight and wishing everyone a healthy New Year.

New Years Eve

I’ll be spending mine next to my better half. Nice. A night of joy, celebrations and expressions of love.

As the guys shirts below state, a night of free hugs and kisses. Some booze inspired and short lived, some with meaning so deep it lasts a lifetime.

Have a Safe and Happy New Years Eve. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I’ve had the full range of New Years experiences. Done the wild and casual parties, done the casual dinner with good friends. Did the family for a few years if memory serves me right. Celebrated with a nice dinner and night together with just my better half most years. Celebrated babysitting grandchildren. Celebrated alone. Been hammered drunk for a few but sober for most.

Never been interested in Times Square celebration. Unless it’s on the TV. Very few nights have I missed the stroke of midnight. Can’t even remember the last one I didn’t see. Probably when my kids were very young. Actually, a faded memory of one year waking up next to my wife shortly after midnight realizing we missed it, rolled over and kissed her and we each said happy New Year and went back to sleep.

I feel both invigorated and sad. I feel challenged and nervous.

I’m going to go to bed tomorrow morning and I’m going to SLEEP. Having worked the last several New Years Eves’ and days’, it’s nice to kick back and join the crowd who enjoy these holidays.

Summation

I’m trying to get a jump on things so I’m not leaving the summation of the year till tomorrow. Plus it’s going to be a busy day. I don’t have the time to review the photos I took this year and find my favorites. I’d rather spend the time trying to capture that new illusive image that I’ll always be searching for.

It’s been a great year. I’ve gotten to enjoy my family immensely. Being able to spend more time with friends. I’ve started down the road of pursuing my hobbies. The progress on home and yard projects picked up dramatically.

We ventured to some new and some favorite locations throughout the year. Put some new memories in the mental scrapbook.

I’m glad to wake up each day, even if it is due to a back spasm early in the morning. I’m glad that most around me are still here to enjoy the day.

I’ve been catching up with some old friends and making new ones.

I worked on learning to be happy more. It greatly improves the quality of life.

All aboard, time to exit 2024 tomorrow so might as well ride out in style.

More Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Much respect to former President Jimmy Carter. Thank you for your service. Thank you for showing what a strong, and at the same time a compassionate human being can be.
  • Matthews 1600 in Catonsville is on my list of Go-To favorites to eat.
  • Tomorrow is going to be a long day and night. I’m yawning already.
  • Some may not know it, but there is a line between a beautiful Xmas display of lights and something gawdy. And don’t forget, sometimes fewer can be better.

Hideout

I wouldn’t have seen him, but that rack moved ever so slightly. He was napping in the back again. I’m going to make like this guy, and be inconspicuous on New Years Eve.

This is the only shot I took yesterday that wasn’t of our (delayed) family Christmas together. Those 80 shots will just be shared with family.

So I’ll get out today and try to do a bit better in capturing images for the sharing category.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Trying is succeeding.
  • Wind and cold = intolerable.
  • The last days of limited conflict are in our midst.
  • There’s a lot of tempting sweets in the house. I’m trying to moderate, but I’m weak.
  • My kids probably get sick of me telling them how much I love them. I know my father must have said it, but I haven’t a memory of him saying it. So I might overdo it for that reason. Plus I really do love them.

Flowing

The mind is flowing with thoughts and ideas. I’ve been executing a few and also enjoying the day with the Maryland basketball win earlier, some editing and uploading. Now I’m headed to the workroom and the Dremel tool.

Looking at the last few days remaining in the month of December and thinking about what to do with the rest of the year. Sunday is booked with some great plans, so that leaves Monday and Tuesday.

I know I want to have a good meal with my better half one night. It looks like rain so grilling out isn’t in the cards. Maybe an early dinner out and beat the crowds. If we are doing that, I might want to make reservations now if I’m not too late already.

Whoops just remembered we might be babysitting on Tuesday night. No problem, we will still have a nice meal this coming week sometime. We were good and didn’t eat out much at all in December.

Just got our insurance information for next year and the rates. It’s been some time since reading all the fine print, so I think I’ll try to do that and make sure I have what I think I do. Then again, I’m no lawyer and they revel in fine print.

Kicking Friday

Shave and a haircut, makes a man feel good. Well in my case a beard trim and haircut. What didn’t feel good was that trunk lid hitting me in the back of the head when it fell unexpectedly.

Photography Journey Day 57 – 12/27/24

I may have underestimated the effort to go through over a decade’s worth of images in a short amount of time. Select, edit, upload and sometimes make some prints. I just have to keep plugging away each day. It could take the month of January.

While trying to upload new images I’m still organizing portfolios and moving about 500 images to new spots that made more sense.

I did get out to the Patapsco River today near Grist Mill Trail and what I thought was the old Simpkins Industry’s building.

My better half’s family and I used to walk that trail together, and I’m going to come back down here and do that walk on the next nice day.

Unfortunately people have turned this old site into a dumping ground right along a beautiful river. I think I’ll start taking a trash bag along with me on walks and do some cleanup.

Hopefully one of these days one of these peckerwoods dumping illegally will back their truck too close to the edge and I’ll find it down there next time. Photo by Mike Hartley

It had been a good while since driving River Road just outside Ellicott City in Baltimore County. When I worked at The Times Newspapers, I would sometimes drive down by the river and sit there and have my lunch.

Not the ideal place for a foundation. Photo by Mike Hartley

There is no parking along River Road now for a long stretch where there used to be several spots to pull over and sit and listen to the water and woods.

And where there is spots to pull over, look out for broken glass. There are a few spots as River Road goes over the bridge and becomes Ilchester Road on the right that have legal parking.

It was nice to get out for a few minutes this morning. Something I should make a habit of every morning.

We keep passing the infrastructure issues down the road. Photo by Mike Hartley.

Were going to get a soaking rain it appears the next two days. Where’s my raincoat?

Light it up

Being our family celebration is postponed I had some time to PLAN.

For 2025 I hope to take many steps here and elsewhere in my life to improve. I hope to work much harder at ideas I’ve been flushing out and execute them.

A few of the words I’m thinking I need to incorporate into my 2025 plans.

Risks” – It’s time to take some more risks here and in life.

Schedule” – I’m hoping it will help me with both production, quality, consistency and enjoyment in this and other endeavors like my exercise.

Love” – The coming addition to the family will certainly need me to turn up the Papa Factor. I also have to spread some love to the local pet shelter. And do a better job with my better half and children.

PowerHouse” – No, not the energy bar. I’m going to turn next year into taking care of some needs of our humble abode. I have more than a dozen listed so far that are very significant projects that I’d like to complete before June on the home and yard. Some I’ll have to hire out and others I’ll be attacking.

Sponge” – I want to get back to being a sponge for knowledge. I’ve gotten lazy and I need to stay even more challenged mentally as I age.

DayTripper” – Yep we are going to be out and about again this year. Hopefully even more than 2024 and we were more active than we had been in decades. So why not build on it.

Attitude” – No sense waiting for my health to fail. Time to run through those walls now before they leave a mark or prevent me from moving forward.

BeachBum” – I’m going to wear a path between Ocean City and my house this coming year.

History” I have to go through some more family history and learn. For instance, a few thousand slides. Also some old papers from my father.

Car and Driver” – I’m going to get a little more seat time this year and maybe do a modification or two. It’s going to need a new exhaust so that will be first this spring. Then maybe some handling mods. As the group Little Feat say, “Let it Roll”

Image” – In addition to publishing here daily I’m really going to build out my photo site and work on videos to add to the YouTube collection. My goal of daily shooting will begin today and not stop till I can’t hold a camera or see through the viewfinder.

Dust” – If I have my way I’ll be creating a lot of sawdust in 25. I’ve got to move that activity outside. It will save cleanup time.

I’m going to be a bolt of energy this coming year. Photo by Mike Hartley

Together

Some illnesses this year have led to some schedule changes, but as long as we get together later, it will be okay. Today will feel strange not gathering with our children and grandchildren, but it’s another story to add to the holiday list.

Taking a care package to one of them for a porch exchange and talked at length with the other last night.

I was up early, as I am most Christmas mornings, wrapping my better half’s gifts and thinking about our parents who are no longer with us. Even holidays when they were older seem distant now. So much has changed.

I paused once or twice when I was decorating our tree and still using some ornaments my mother would decorate her tree with. Or special ones with pictures of my better half’s parents. Some years or times those things bring a smile, sometimes a tear, sometimes both with a chuckle.

Being together is always possible if you let the memories make it so.

Merry Christmas all.

Weak-Strong Start

I got lost in space yesterday morning so I laid back down and took a two hour nap and started over. Got the right frame of mind and started production.

Several logistical tasks were accomplished. Banking, haircut appointment made, doctors appointment made, car maintenance completed, boxes returned to storage, playpen assembled, read security precautions, clean out email, vacuum and clean up the office a bit.

Todays start was much better where I was up hours before sunrise working and exercising. I feel like I got a days work done before noon.

The season of flu, rsv and covid is messing with our holiday plans. We will adapt but it will most likely result in split delayed celebrations. Can’t say it doesn’t hurt though, but it’s life.

So a great song came on to cheer me up a bit (Free Bird from Lynyrd Skynyrd) the live version of course from 76. This might be my favorite band of all time but I never went to see them after the plane crash killed and injured so many.

And while some original members were always part of the band after it reformed with it just wasn’t the band I loved. I’m glad they were able to bring the music to later generations but again, I only listen to the pre crash days.

I’m sitting here trying not to be bummed out about the change in plans and thinking of how to make the best of it. We will take the sick ones some food and see them from outside. It will probably make us sad on the way back home but it will make them feel much better.

Speaking of food, we had better decide on our meal this evening. I think we are treating ourselves to some carry out. Maybe some seafood or Chinese. Then again I haven’t had any Mexican in a bit. The picture of the crabcakes has me thinking that route but I don’t like getting seafood to go.

I think I’ll take my better half out this week for a seafood dinner. Food by Fagers Island Ocean City MD. One of our favorite spots but I think we will do something a bit more local. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll probably post through the evening a bit but wishing you all a wonderful, peaceful, healthy and comforting Christmas and Hanukkah Eve.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Instituting a new family tradition for the grandchildren. Showing them the importance of sharing, especially during this season by letting them pick a charity or needy person/group.
  • When apart from family at this time, the heart strains.
  • The University of Maryland Men’s basketball team is getting no respect. Teams will pay for this.
  • Faith, as unique as each of us.
  • I bite my lip, as I think of Christmas past with those no longer here to celebrate with.

Cold

Well I should expect the cold this time of year. And the location I live in does get a winter season. Not much of one in terms of snow but it can get cold. And 24 degrees as I write this last post of the day is a good reason to stay in this evening.

Photography Journey Day 52 – 12/22/24

I’m working hard and I’ll have something to show for it when completed but I’m going through all my old shoots for the last few decades and getting things sorted out, edited if needed and uploaded to the photo site.

Much work remains but I’m putting hours into it each day. Once finished I’ll get some trusted friends to review my galleries and do a little weeding.

Tomorrow night I’ll go out and get the tripod to get some steady holiday lights. Not this evening though, I’m done, the body has nothing left to give. The mind is active and having thoughts of heading outside. And while the mind is the key to unlock many things I haven’t seen it turn the ignition key yet.

The tree is complete. Well as complete as its going to be for this year except for some presents around it in a few days. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This is one of the longest stretches this year I haven’t seen my children. That will end this week.
  • I think a good nights sleep is in order.
  • Editing photos of summer in the winter is depressing.
  • Plans are nice, execution is better.

Slowly he creeps upstairs and enters the kitchen. So many decisions. Do you take all the containers back to the basement? Do you take a sampling of each or maybe a few of each?

Do you get a bowl of ice cream to put them in? Nah, you grab one and save the rest for family. That is till they start talking to you again.

Because sharing is caring. Plus she is making more today and I’m looking forward to trying a sugar cookie with a cherry filled Hershey Kiss on top of it and a peanut butter cookie with a regular Hershey Kiss on top.

He kids, if your reading this you might want to text Mom to hide the cookies by Sunday.

Plugging away

I’m giving up on normal sleep cycles. I just can’t get it together.

Photo Journey Day 49 recap – 12/19/24

Yesterday a concerted effort began to fill out and organize my photo site. I have several thousand images, and I want to get many more there before the end of the year. A lot more because I haven’t probably touched half the images I’d like to edit, upload, sort and organize.

A warm weather image being it’s snowing out here today. Photo by Mike Hartley

We are going to need to get away in January or February. I’m not sure if we will take a day or two at the beach or inland. But we are both feeling the need for a break.

Too chilly to walk that beach this morning. Plus I just checked the webcam and the sun isn’t up in Ocean City either. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel like making sausage gravy and biscuits.
  • If you haven’t noticed, society is starting to break down at normal activities.
  • Maybe we should vote to shut down Twitter, Tesla and Space X and see how that feels to Elon and his employees. Bet Republicans didn’t know they were voting for Musk to run the country. And poor JD he’s back to the rear seat of the car.
  • Pet’s are worth their weight in gold. And more in some cases.

Here’s looking at you

Crap, only a week before Xmas. I better go shopping. Oh good, my better half has it under control and wrapped. One of the many wonders she pulls off each year.

Photo Journey Day 48 – 12/18/24

I didn’t shoot much yesterday, or the day before. I’m getting slack again, or just busy also. It is the holiday season. So, I caught this squirrel outside the back door yesterday enjoying the warm weather.

They still are cute. They love all the nuts from my oak trees in the front yard. Photo by Mike Hartley

We took advantage of the warm weather to go get our live Christmas tree yesterday. Lights go on it today.

I had good intentions with the camera yesterday. I went out in the afternoon to gas up the go-cart and was going to shoot for an hour. But to be honest I got selfish. It was 61 degrees and sunny, so I put the top down and cruised for an hour or more. Just soaking up some sun and listening to music going through the gears.

So chalk one up to a lazy sunny day. You don’t get many of those in the Mid Atlantic in mid-December. And when you do, you see others touched by it on their motorcycles and convertibles with the tops down.

I’ll do another shot when decorated. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This transfer portal thing is injuring college sports. But it’s a mirror of society. The rich get richer. I’m not sure what happened to the word commitment, but it sure has changed.
  • I might not be able to reach out and touch a satellite spying on me, but my gun and aim are pretty good with skeet shooting, so a drone should be no problem. And if they come in volume, I have lots of friends who love to shoot skeet also.
  • Being a one-man band is time consuming and hard work. But it’s damn good to have a band.
  • It’s almost time to hibernate for a few months. The cover is on the Miata. It’s warm inside. I’m good.
  • I love the smell of a live tree. Well, used to be alive tree.

Year 1 of Retired

Do I wish I had retired earlier? Yes, but I didn’t do the right things to make that happen. So here we are, a bit older but inspired to have an opportunity of a second chance at pursuing my artistic interests that I set aside early in life.

I didn’t put any restrictions on anything when I retired on the last day of 2023. I needed to unwind for a few months and take care of both financial and medical transitions. I was just going with the flow for the first 4 months of the year. I allowed myself to be lazy at times. I picked the pace up after that in both our travels and my hobbies. It’s not till recently that I’ve added some structure and dedicated time each day to move my hobbies along and exercise regularly.

The secret is to keep busy with them. When I run into a creative block or tire of one discipline, I move on to the next. Secondly is to do them every day. I’ve learned this with exercise. Trying to do it piecemeal I fail at it every time. If I don’t make it part of everyday it doesn’t happen.

With that being said, it’s not like I didn’t get a lot more active in these pursuits throughout the year. For instance, this blog. I will over double the number of views this year over any of the previous 10 years of blogging. By working on more content and hopefully better quality it might be on the way after a slow start.

I don’t put a lot of weight on stats so maybe it’s not completely accurate. It could be the volume of posts I’m making. The previous high for the year was last year at 404. With 14 days to go, I’m at 758 posts so far this year.

I’d like to think some of it was better quality, but I won’t make that leap of faith yet. I know I haven’t invested in being found except for WordPress. I don’t market or publicize my blog. Hell, some of my friends and extended family aren’t even aware of it.

Doing it helps me grow. It gives me purpose and goals. And when I create something, I like or that someone else likes the effort is well worth it.

Feeling like it’s very important to make use of every opportunity.

Did I meet all my goals this year, not quite but I exceeded some and others I was a bit behind. I’m going to spend the next few weeks organizing for 2025. The list for home/yard improvements is complete for the first half of 2025. A lot of my personal goals for the year are done. I’ve got a fairly long list of state spots to visit and some out of state ones also.

I’ve completed the list for blogging goals and now I’m starting on my photography and woodworking goals. This year I’m also starting something new. I want to do something special with each grandchild. Something they will remember. Maybe a new tradition like a hike or and activity. Maybe a ballgame or two together or whatever Something new that would make that lasting impression on them.

It’s going to be another year ahead of change. One of my best friends might be moving further away. Family members are looking at homes also. We had a good bit of changeover in the neighborhood last year and there might be more this year.

Like they say, the only constant in life is change.

Great balls of fire

I hope your Sunday was a good one. I was less than 100% but I’m feeling good this Monday morning.

Photography Journey Day 45 recap- 12/15/24

Read a little more of the Photographers Handbook and got some ideas for this weeks shooting. I cranked up the printer and made several family prints. I tried some shots of the artificial tree in the basement but I didn’t like any of it. Charged all 3 batteries for a fresh start today.

Still deciding where to put this red string of balls up. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll have to see if I can get back on track today and do this daily instead of recaps. And to do that I need to get moving now.

I wasn’t feeling focused yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

Held my breath

It was an adventurous day.

I was coming home with my new “used car” this Thursday afternoon and sure enough someone tried to destroy it. Luckily this old man has some skills and good reaction time. So, while the car and occupant avoided injury as well as a few others he cut off on the same move, my new camera went flying off the passenger seat.

Yeah, I know my bad, I normally don’t keep it on the seat. I had it in its case and that appears to have saved it to my great relief. I’ve always been pretty good at keeping things in cases or some kind of protection.

The case I got with my new camera. Photo by Mike Hartley

I had my daughter get me a Craftsman tool bag a long time ago for Xmas. It’s one of my camera bags. It holds the big Nikon, the new camera and case, a small Kodak video camera, my cell phone, filters, reading glasses, keys, wallet, lens tissue, Chapstick, a knife, and the electronics have separators and bubble wrap under them.

Taking care of hard-earned equipment or anything has been something my parents taught me. For instance, I take care of the cars we get. We get anywhere from 150 – 200 miles and still sell a running car when we decide to move on. Or maybe the Black and Decker leaf blower from the 1960s that is still clearing the property.

Anyway, thanks to the foresight of buying a new case for the new camera and using it, I live to shoot another day. Thank you Ruggard and your Hunter 35 bag.

Fruitless and Fruitful

One of those days I felt like I was spinning my wheels but in retrospect I did get a good bit accomplished. I’ll take days like that as a win.

Photography Journey – Day 43 Recap – 12/13/24

Yesterday was spent running errands and I still have more today but I did make good use of time at home by uploading about 400 new images to the photo site. There is so much work to be done there in organizing, labelling and maybe starting to use a watermark. So much I have yet to learn but the journey is the fun part.

As I was doing some editing, I found a few images that I might attempt to turn into some wood carvings.

A decent size buck appeared in the backyard in the afternoon. He pulled up a nice soft spot and caught a nap for a few hours. That time creating sawdust in the workroom finishing up a horse for my granddaughter kind of ate into my imaging goals.

The sun returns today so I’ll try to make the best use of it and get some better shots.

Nap time. Photo by Mike Hartley

I left this guy alone for a long time before stepping out to my deck. Their hearing is amazing. I’ve learned to be quiet over the years but never enough for mother natures ears.

Balls to the Wall

Sorry about the rude title but it’s a phrase our group uses about maximum effort. Sort of like “pedal to the metal” or “Full Bore” or “All OUT.” It’s just our groups nature, we go full tilt boogie through life.

When I Googled “Balls to the Wall” it returned something I didn’t know. – First attested in the 1960s in the context of aviation, in reference to ball-shaped grips on an aircraft’s engine controls (typically throttle, prop pitch and fuel mixture). Pushing these “balls to the wall” would put the aircraft at maximum thrust.

This nice sled was in Frederick Maryland a few years back. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think 2025 is going to be one of those years I put the pedal down. I had a good year in 24 but I could have accomplished more. I did let myself relax after pushing myself hard for a long time and I’m glad I took the break.

My goals are much clearer now a year after retirement. I’m glad I had a good plan going into it but now I can refine and refocus. And hopefully produce something more robust.

By working steadily through the year each day, I learned not only skills and techniques but more importantly the effort it’s going to take to keep this up and expand it to my vision. I learned that I liked to have the ultimate flexible schedule but that wasn’t always the most productive.

Photo Editing and Writing are time consumers. There might not be much of a way around that. Both could use more time to be honest to increase the quality here and on my display stuff.

I really got stronger the last few months on a few woodworking projects. That is a lot of fun because you can see your progress very clearly. I’ve been working on a pastel piece for 2 months now and I’m nowhere near done.

Sometimes when I think I’m done with a project I find something I’ve missed in previous shoots that need adding to, or I pay a fresh visit or maybe at a different time of season and have a whole new aspect to add to the subject.

I don’t know why I feel like I’m in a creative lul sometimes. It’s ridiculous, because there is endless possibilities.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • You can tell the stress level of the general public by taking a drive.
  • Why can’t those drones fly over my house. I’d like some target practice. Hover low over my airspace at your own risk.
  • I love putting up Xmas lights. I have someone to keep me in check though.
  • The workout felt good today.

No change

There are a good number of things we might like to change about our home, but this fireplace and brick isn’t one of them.

Family room fireplace decorated for the holiday. Photo by Mike Hartley

The decorations are coming together. We have yet to purchase the real tree for the living room, but I have the artificial one in the basement together with lights and some beads strung around it. Just ornaments to do. I have a few red ribbons to put by the windows in the front and a string of lights for the deck which I’ll do tomorrow.

I didn’t do much shooting today. The rain dampened my spirits. Despite the cold I hope to get out early tomorrow morning for an hour of shooting before the day’s chores.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I believe the cost of healthcare just went up again with all the security the executives of these companies will be hiring.
  • I know people who like the sun like to retire in Florida. I wonder if people who like rain want to retire in Seattle.
  • Whoever invented the space heater, you have my appreciation.
  • In the past I’ve let my lips get very chapped in the winter. I’m trying to turn that around this winter. I have multiple ChapSticks in my travel bag, my photo bag, my desk, my car and probably one or two in the coats.
  • A day of errands but a great lunch with my better half.

What would I do today

A free day except for a few chores and cooking later. But that is later. I passed out at the start of the MNF game and woke at 1:15 am. Now I’m wide awake and don’t feel like going to bed and looking at the ceiling.

Plus, I already turned on some inspirational music and we are Rocking & Rolling here at camp Woodstock. I’ll lift some weights to dissipate some of this energy that’s building. In the meantime, I’m continuing to upload images.

Around 5 am I thought I’d go get a few fog shots before sunrise. Those are below from Ellicott City. I caught a nap and now I’m ready to roll again. Not sure what I’ll shoot the rest of the day, but I will get out again.

I’ve got to force myself to get out each day. It’s pretty easy for me to become a homebody. And retirement even makes that easier.

I kind of like being out early in the morning before sunrise. Reminds me of old times when I was a nocturnal creature.

With the fog everything was a shade of grey, black or white. But every once in a while you can spot some color.

This morning it wasn’t too bad. About 41 degrees I think I saw on the dash. I’ll be dressing warmer later this week again it looks like. Mornings in the teens and 20s forecast.

All I know is that I have to live more in the moment and today has been a good use of that theory. But I have a lot of work to do on my fog photography. I think I’ll look for some examples for inspiration the next time it moistures up like it did today.

Blooming ideas

It’s been a fairly creative day. Not especially on the photographic end but overall.

A gift from friends that is brightening up our kitchen. Photo by Mike Hartley

Photography Journey Day 39 – 12/9/24

I hope to get out later and take a few fog photos. I see some rolling in already and if it thickens up that might make for some interesting shots. In the meantime, I’ll upload some images to Zenfolio.

Some images were added to the family wall. Also, some editing on some recent shots and cleanup of some that should have been trashed on the first edit.

I should have taken a few photos in the attic while I was cleaning it out. I’ll add that to the very long list of things I should have shot. Laziness got a hold of me a bit the last few days in terms of my hobbies. I didn’t abandon them, just didn’t make the dedication I’d like to.

As long as I’m alive and kicking I’ll work to turn that back around. And work to make the village around me a better place. Have a good evening. all.

I don’t have to worry about the cat, but I do have to keep an eye on the grandkids. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a wrap

Well, if you measure by the week this one is about in the books. Some prep for the season and home maintenance. We’re cleaning out the attic and I hope to finish that job tomorrow. Worked on hanging a few strings of lights on the front porch.

Tomorrow I venture out for the area light displays. Photo by Mike Hartley

I also finished putting the tree together in the basement and got the lights on that. Tested 4 other strings of light and fixed 2 other strings of lights that had several out which put a smile on my face.

It’s almost time to break out the gift wrapping tools.

Photography Journey Day 37 recap and Day 38 – 12/8/24

I haven’t done the shooting I hoped for the last two days but I’ve got a good mental balance working again. I needed some rest and it’s a busy season getting ready for the holidays. I didn’t take advantage of the nice weather today, so I’ll venture out into the rain tomorrow.

I did get another shot for the family camera series. This is another oldie. Manufactured between 1949 and 1961 I give you the Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera.

Ah, only 5 minutes to the start of a new week. Most dread Mondays. I now love them, as I do every day.

Decade ago

A decade ago this past August, I went to the Newseum in Washington DC with my Daughter. I remember it raining, but that didn’t put a damper on the day with her at all, because every minute with her is a gift. If my memory serves me right now, she had gotten me tickets as a birthday gift.

It was fun seeing her interested in my business, having worked in Newspapers for 4 decades at that time. I ran 3 pictures in that original post on August 16th 2014 and talked about the day. I came across the folder and realized there were a few more fuzzy shots I didn’t share on that first posting.

Newseum in Washington DC in 2014. Photo by Mike Hartley

I can still remember her smiles, and I have a few personal shots of her from that trip. Now thinking back on that day, it means the world to me. She knows more about what I did for almost 5 decades.

My grandchildren will never know about it because it won’t be here in their generation. I have a project I’m thinking about that might change that, if I have enough years left. I’m not sure the pressroom in Springfield will be around much longer for the kids to visit if I could swing it from one of the old timers who still might be there. I’ll have to add that to the goals list in the next few years.

Newseum in Washington DC in 2014. Photo by Mike Hartley

I also went back and read those words from that day. And the thoughts on TRUTH in Journalism are still very true today, but muddier than when I wrote this original piece.

Here are some of the other shots I took that day of the Newseum which no longer exist. Just like a lot of good journalism. Fact checked, verified and always looking for the truth. Trouble is now there are so many Truth versions nobody believes anything or only one thing from one source which is also dangerous.

Newseum in Washington DC in 2014. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m glad to be out of the business now. Having a target on my back because of the place I worked in Trumps first term and being called the enemy of the people wasn’t fun and I’m glad I don’t have to go through that again. The threats and security ramped up quite a bit during those years.

Newseum in Washington DC in 2014. Photo by Mike Hartley

You wouldn’t catch me going downtown to work there without some protection now. And that’s not legal so I’m glad I don’t have to cross that line. Of course, that knife I carried for years wasn’t legal either. But if you work nights in DC you had better be prepared if you got a walk to the garage or subway.

Capture Time

There are many reasons I love photography. But that aspect of capturing a point in time really is special.

Photography Journey Day 36 – 12/6/24

The sun was out, but I also heard that wind and stepping outside I felt very COLD. So to hell with that nonsense. Sorry, I know I should be out shooting but I have a severe dislike of this weather.

So, another series of shots is planned for another old camera later tonight. A Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model made between 1949 – 1961. Maybe I’ll shoot that other old Kodak and several Polaroids.

As I was doing some editing tonight, I ran across this street scene from Ellicott City. The location is in the photo. It’s not every day you can pull a rabbit (left) out of a photo.

Oh I’m longing for summer already and it’s still early December. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

The Canon printer has been humming along the last few days. And I hope to finish that pack of 8×10 off this evening.

More Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My mind says I could still run through a wall. Good thing the mind isn’t in total control anymore.
  • The best photo I’ve taken is the one I have yet to take. It could be tonight or tomorrow if I only pick up the camera.
  • Make someone happy and repeat.
  • One-man bands are better if they can play a lot of different instruments.
  • Speaking of bands, Aerosmith just doesn’t sound right unless the volume knob is at 10. Someone somewhere is asking “what is a volume knob”

Well as RUSH would say, it’s time to Roll The Bones.

Friday Follies

Fridays are still a lot of fun. People in general are in better spirits and optimistic about the coming weekend. I am also even though every day is a weekend now. The few shots in this post are from yesterday. Today was indoors and filled with logistics. Medical and car insurance to start with.

Shot this while waiting at the light at Frederick Road and Rt 40. I’m not sure if its a home or business to be honest. I do find the design and paint interesting. Photo by Mike Hartley

Good thing, a job isn’t in the way of all this progress. My better half started to remove the Thanksgiving decorations and began the process for the next holiday. I’m trying to figure out where the Xmas tree in the basement is going this year. I’ve been moving furniture around trying to maybe keep it out of the path of the young ones.

It’s berry cold outside. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I found the right spot and will begin the assembly of the artificial tree. We get a real one for the upstairs sometime this coming week.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Some people are just angry at heart. Others are being taught to be angry and that is troubling.
  • It’s nice when friends thank you.
  • Plans are good, actions are better.
  • Started another woodworking project today, for my daughter.
  • It’s going to be a good night for creativity.

Brownie

Ran a few errands and thought I’d take a few shots on the way home. Got out of the car once. The wind wanted to rip the door from my hand when I opened it, a gust just about knocked me over and the vest over the sweatsuit wasn’t enough for the temps for any amount of time. So back home and inside.

Photography Journey Day 34 Recap and Day 35 Update – 12/5/24

Spent yesterday sharing some photos work with some old friends who were visiting, doing backups, editing some videos.

The main effort today was uploading images to the photo site and editing some family shots for the holidays. Tomorrow I’ll start my holiday shooting to get this blog in the proper seasonal spirits. Till then some history.

Our first item is a vintage 1920s Eastman Kodak #2A Brownie Model C Box Camera. Made between 1924 and 1933. The oldest camera in the family collection. From my grandparents to ours.

The Doors 3

I believe I shot this door below in St Michaels Maryland a few years back. Remember, a few years could be a long time being I’m a senior. It’s one of my favorite shots of a door. Sorry if you’ve seen it before. I think I first published it back in 2014 or 2015.

Also another old shot of the Embassy Theatre in Cumberland Maryland.

The Embassy. Photo by Mike Hartley

About 5-6 years ago I was laid up for a couple weeks during the summer and had to have someone else cut the lawn a few times. For that I received a broken slider door. If I had been well enough to pull the mower out of that shed in the background, this wouldn’t have happened. They did replace it but it took like 7 weeks if I remember correctly.

I’m having fun participating in the Thursday Doors where people post their best Entrances and Exits. Remember to share your link in the comments’ on Dan’s site.

Now is Nice

Had a great day with some old friends yesterday but finished it up with a headache. Such is life. A couple Tylenol and all was well again.

Today might not be so nice. Got some 50+ mph wind gusts coming later this morning and that always increases our likelihood of power loss. So I’m charging the batteries on the cameras and will do some shooting if we do.

Two of my least favorite things, wind and cold together. A warm summer breeze is a welcome thing. A 50 mph gust and temps in the 20s is pretty unpleasant.

I do have go out for a few errands but I’ll probably stick close to home in case we have issues from the wind. Being surrounded by trees is always an adventure. I was just out securing the light items and bringing the trash cans under the deck and it’s so quiet and calm out right now.

It looks like the animal kingdom is also hunkering down. I don’t see the normal morning activity out back. No deer or squirrels and the birds seem to have disappeared all but a few distant chirps. At least the wind will clear out this cloudy start to the day.

Still enjoying life. Photo by Mike Hartley

So if you don’t see anymore postings today you can assume I’m powerless and gone out photographing for a bit till I have to worry about how to heat the house. Enjoy your day, be safe and healthy.

Late Start

Waking at 5:30 am is late for me. But that was the starting gun for today.

Photography Journey Day 33 Recap – 12/3/24

Another busy day distracted me from my camera. Some errands and chores along with some woodworking but little in new imaging efforts on Tuesday.

I finished boxing up several hundred old prints. And actually, when I looked at the new prints I had made for a few projects I realized the day wasn’t a total loss. It just feels like it when I don’t get any new shooting in.

Oh, I also went through another 200 slides from my parent’s collection. I’m just starting on a box that is filled with 16 slide trays all packed with images. I’m starting to run into more images from my father’s trip on Operation Deep Freeze.

I really must finish that project because I know my kids won’t know the significance of some images. I’m going to have trouble with some. If I could match some of the images with my father’s journals from WW2 , Korea and his trips to the poles that might be something.

I should have retired earlier.

Giving Tuesday

Raise your spirits by raising someone else’s.

A lot of people will open those wallets today and give to many charities. Helping people and providing hope. But I heard some chatter that less people than previous years because of the economy.

I worked on helping this morning and I’ll probably do more this afternoon. I used to feel inferior if I couldn’t make a substantial donation. Now I just feel good about what I can give.

Each little bit helps, and I always feel I should be doing more. I think my parents are still talking to me. I realized that the few bucks I might spend here and there over the year would be better in the hands of the Red Cross or Maryland Food Bank.

One less dinner out or tank of gas could be a donation to the V Foundation or American Cancer Society. A less extravagant trip might help The Chesapeake Bay Foundation. And so on.

I think I’ll be in a better position to do more financially next year (fingers crossed) and expand to some new organizations. The personal time I hope to invest in doing some type of volunteer work is high on my wish list for 2025.

Then again, the family is expanding so time may be tight again.

You can raise your own Spirits by helping lift someone else’s. Photo by MIke Hartley

The trouble with donating is the hounding you are bombarded with after. The mail, the email, the calls, the unsubscribing.

I wonder if the Salvation Army Red Pot collections outside stores are down because, so few people carry cash now?

Sorry to ramble on. Just wanted to thank those who give not just today but throughout the year to so many causes. It’s something that has a common cause still in this country.

Regardless of the weather I’m still trying to get out and about. Even though every bit of my former common sense says stay inside, it’s too cold out. But today was about logistics and not hobbies.

Photography Journey Day 32 – 12/2/24

Kind of in a funk lately. Still managed to make some progress with some more prints for the basement walls. Did some much needed cleanup and a backup of some other work. Also worked on some illustrations.

But no new shooting. So here is a blast from the past till I get out tomorrow.

Partial Success

Partial success is better than no success. I finished one woodworking piece today instead of the two I hoped for. I did do some work on a pastel piece I started a while back that I didn’t plan on.

Photography Journey Day 30 – 11/30/24

I love black eyed susans. These were in Annapolis Maryland. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was able to add about a dozen prints to the family wall and a couple to my friends wall. Also made a few display prints for the Shore project. I stepped outside a few times but returned to the warmth of the house and inside activities.

A real chill in the air tonight so thought I’d run something a bit more summer like instead.

Saturday Shiver

Windy and cold is not a good start to a Small Business Saturday. But it’s sunny so we will go with that plus and ride out the day with some warm beverages and food. With the feast on Thursday and leftovers yesterday one would think I’ve built up a little insulation. But I’ve done fairly well on the weight front.

I miss that feeling of youth where you could run all day without a second thought. That energy isn’t instinct anymore. I’m thinking it feels like mind over matter at this point. That’s why I’m trying to strengthen the mind as well as the body.

I’m trying to get that intensity back. Not the work type, that youthful energy and mindset. It’s hard to grasp again in your senior years. Music from my youth sometimes helps with that inspiration. I know I use music to try to keep in shape now.

I need to see those possibilities and images from my mind of decades ago. I’m looking for that path in my head that leads to endless creative thoughts and ideas that once flowed like a river. They seem to be farther and farther apart now. Or come in great rushes that I can’t keep up with.

Actually, shot this a couple mornings ago. While my mind is willing today, the body is in pause for a few hours this morning. I’m hoping for an afternoon ride though.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ll take good memories over material things.
  • That was one painful night.
  • I was less than thrilled with the winter (chapstick and lotion) season starting early this year.
  • Taking the weather outside a minute at a time. Amazing how many curse words I can use per minute.

Recap

I just realized I was a few days behind on a few things. It’s a good weekend to catch up and get back in step.

Photography Journey Day 28 & 29 Recap – 11/29/24

I started this last night and fell asleep. New shooting has been limited but progress is good on the editing and uploading front.

Grazing in my backyard again yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m going to brave the cold temps today and try to get some new images. Concentrating on some of the early Xmas decorations so I can start the month of December off with some seasonal spirit. I found a map of some homes in the county with light displays.

I’ve got to finish a few pieces that I’ve been lingering on in the workroom. Mostly for the family so I really should complete those. This one below is just a freehand cut I did from this shell as an example. I haven’t decided how to use them yet. They are pretty good size. The shell is 6.5 inches long and the board I cut is 11.5 inches long.

I thought about burning the wood a bit which gives an effect I’ve seen look interesting. But the grain of the wood seems to match the shell’s flow, and I might emphasize that. I should have taken a shot without the shell on top.

I should have used a thinner piece of wood. Live and learn. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve started carvings of two other shells, much more detailed but also decent sizes. But today I will try to finish a Dolphin and Horse for my granddaughter.

Pumped

For some reason (unknown) I’m really feeling good about today. Maybe the music I started with today. Some upbeat Van Halen is on now. Little Guitars and Right Now. Maybe its my body not sending pain signals constantly.

Could be the fact that I have a free day to do some photography and other artistic pursuits. That always gets me in a good frame of mind.

I’m sure some of it is the residual feeling from being with my family yesterday and this morning. I made some of my granddaughter’s favorite (bacon) this morning and my better half made her cinnamon buns.

It could be the excitement I feel training my granddaughter in photography. She now has my old Kodak Digital camera. And the fact that she seems interested and excited about it is a real plus.

Maybe the thought of not having to go to a store today, even though I’m sure I’ll see or experience some idiot drivers. Good thing I’m in a holiday spirit and will just let it roll off the back.

With the clouds this morning I’m going to spend some time pumping the body up. Some weights and treadmill time. But this afternoon I hear sunshine will return so out I will go and try to put a few more miles on this body. There are lots of leftovers to consume so I’ve got to increase the calorie burn rate.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There is only what you do.
  • I swear there is a voice in my back.
  • The thought of not hearing Steven Tyler scream an Aerosmith tune out again is depressing.
  • Another month is almost down, but one of my most productive ones by far this year. And still two days to make more of mark.
  • I think the best thing about holidays now besides not having to work them is not having to go back to work after then. Hell YEAH.

Smiling

Ah the smells of the Thanksgiving feast have started. The family will be together in a few hours. The Macy’s parade is starting. Normally I’d be getting off work around 7am and just going to sleep about now but retirement has freed me from that nonsense, and I get to enjoy another holiday the way most celebrated.

Photography Journey Day 27 Recap – 11/27/24

Another slow shooting day. But good progress on organization, editing and upload images. I found several old ones that inspired some new blogging ideas.

Lessons I learned yesterday.

  • Even though I’m hungry as I can be I need to be disciplined enough to take a picture of the food first. Because some dishes are just beautiful to the sight as well as the pallet.
  • You can’t get any new shots unless you pick up the camera. I only took 3 frames yesterday and it was so little I didn’t even download them yet.
  • Watched a video on Macro photography. Never had a camera with a macro-option.
  • Read some more of The Photographers Playbook. Reading is good for knowledge.

Just one of the many activities that kept me from my hobbies yesterday was the University of Maryland Basketball game. But it’s always good to take a break every so often. And it was a great game filled with many highlights.

Tired but happy

Tuesday, I put in a good effort on several fronts. Mainly on the personal one but productive in hobbies also. Didn’t sleep well again last night but made the best use of being up.

Photography Journey Day 26 Recap- 11/26/24

I almost forgot to charge the cameras before leaving yesterday for some shopping with my better half. Shopping isn’t something I do much, but I thought I’d check out Staples being I’m considering moving the photo ink and paper purchasing I’ve done through Amazon to someone else. I’m not a fan of J.B. His x wife on the other hand seems to be the generous side of the family.

I’ve done some reading on food photography and holiday shooting. I hope to put the new camera to the test.

This weekend forecast and beyond is for much colder temps which will test my internal will to get out each day and shoot part of the county.

Like these two, I’ve stood on this bridge with very good friends on more than one occasion having discussions about life and business. Photo by Mike Hartley

Tuesday Thunder

Wow, an early morning thunderstorm in late November. Weather never fails to surprise me. So, my motivation to get out and look for a sunrise is damping as I hear the raindrops hitting the window. But I will get out today and walk and shoot because that is what I do.

I probably overshoot sunrises and sunsets anyway. I found a shot I took earlier this week of a storefront window in Ellicott City that I’ll have to revisit. The traffic was so heavy I couldn’t get a shot without a reflection of a car in the window. In some ways though I like it. Where the front of the car is overlapping the barrels on the bottle. It almost looks like a cork because the white SUV has the shape of a bottle when I squint at it. Maybe I’m just tired.

It’s 5 O’clock somewhere. Photo by Mike Hartley

I should get moving though because it will clear up outside by noon, and I need to get some fresh images and stories.

Random Thoughts of the Day – so far

  • I was getting off track for a bit and consuming too many sweets. I got my mind right again but I heard their voices from the pantry.
  • The Maui Invitational wasn’t the same without Bill Walton this year. While not my favorite announcer, he was colorful as hell and always that wonderful smile and warmth. There were still some great close games which he would have gone bonkers over.
  • Rumors of a cold front coming. Chances of me getting an attitude increasing.
  • Some people make me laugh, but not the funny ha ha laugh. The shake your head confused or disgusted laugh.

Another day down

It didn’t feel like a down day so I’m not sure why I picked the title “Another day down.” I’m kind of feeling up about the day and the evening ahead.

Photography Journey Day 25 – 11/25/24

I took a few minutes to shoot today between appointments. Also did some editing and printing this evening with the football game and some Rock n Roll in the background. I’m working on a plan for tomorrow’s shooting.

But first some rest so I can make the most out of Tuesday.

Out and About

A good evening all, a busy day but productive one. Took the car in for service on a air bag recall notice. No fuss, no muss, in and out in 2 hours. Thank you, Catonsville Mazda and George. Did a few minutes shooting and then home for a bite to eat and out again for a haircut.

Howard County Photos of the Day – Given it’s the Holiday season I thought I’d try to capture some holiday spirit from both our merchants and homeowners. This one is from Main Street in Ellicott City of Sweet Elizabeth Jane storefront this morning.

I was up well before sunrise and looking for it but my morning appointment for the car made me abandon that hope for a shot, so I got this one of the fading moon and two planes crossing the sky above the horizon line before sunrise.

Always up early. Not always out. Photo by Mike Hartley

Oh crap, I see we have some rain in the forecast tonight. Out I go to put the cover on the car. I need a garage. That is the first thing I’m getting built if I hit the lottery. Oh, that’s right, you have to play to win, and I don’t.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Trying to remember to have proper posture. But after years of slacking in that area change is hard.
  • I miss having a pet.
  • A sad day in our country’s history today. Not the first and not the last. But certainly, one that could have been avoided if people did their job as effectively as those who defended the Capitol on January 6th.
  • Feeling good about the days work. And I have an evening to go.

Letting it come to me

I’m trying to relax. Trying to think like a youngster and see the world as something unique and special. Wondering what each object is. Seeing things in nature for the first time. Looking at the world from a much lower angle.

Photo Journey Day 24 Recap – 11/24/24

When I started in photography in the late 1960s, there was of course the shooting. Pretty much as it is today except for the advancement in the cameras and accessories. But then it was off to the darkroom for film developing and then to the enlarger for prints and then to the sink and trays. I believe it was the early 70s when I got an enlarger. Before that, it was send your film out for processing and prints. No control there.

Again, today we have a lot of time spent in processing after the shoot. Just through the computer instead of the darkroom. I know I could do better with Photoshop or Lightroom or another post processing tool. But then I’m not out shooting.

Like yesterday, I’m going through this last month and editing what I want to upload to my photo site. I have the application that came the Nikon. A basic editing tool called NX Studio. I try to keep my adjustments to a minimum unless I’ve really screwed up a shoot. And that happens to us rookies. The cost and the fear of getting lost in those advanced tools makes me hesitant to purchase and use them.

The other thing about those tools. They can manipulate reality easily. And it’s very tempting to do because I’ve used them professionally at times in my career. But working in the field surrounded by journalist and photojournalist integrity was always first.

This was possible back in the days of processing film and making prints also, but it was much harder. One photog showed me how he could put a baseball before a batter swinging that had already missed the ball. Then he showed me a shot of the same batter getting a hit just the moment before contact with the ball close to the fake print he made. They were close and through newspaper reproduction nobody would have been the wiser. I remember saying something to the effect of how that wouldn’t be right and feels so wrong inside to publish a fake. Not to mention the standards in place against that. But it really does come down to a lot of self control back then and even more so today.

I guess that is why I shoot closer to the photojournalism rule than artistic goals. Nothing against that, I admire many beautiful works like that. And I have dabbled in some special effects but instead of putting Photo by Mike Hartley I’ll label it Illustration by Mike Hartley. That is just my personal style and choice.

While I do crop images from time to time I don’t do so to change the meaning of the image. So all these words are the cover for a lame day of shooting on my part. But the camera comes out today. That means I won’t punish you with more bable later and hopefully some good images to fill the space.

Chomping at the bit

I’ve been in the workroom each day chopping away at some wood. I’ve been trying to make that a daily habit as well as my photography.

Photography Journey Day 23 – 11/23/24

Uploaded over 200 images to the photo site. Probably edited another 50 or so. It was cold and windy and I’m still not 100% so I stayed in except for dinner at one of our local favorites (Oscars Ale House)

Those bits above and many more are the tools I like. Below is a set of manicure tools made with Mother of Pearl. The belonged to my Mother’s Mother. They have just been passed down in our family to yet another generation, so 4 and counting.

These were so beautiful I wanted to get a shot before they let the house. I know my Mom would be happy with them being passed along.

I should get moving on some editing. By my count I have 256 images remaining. I must watch myself getting trash happy when I’m tired. So let me light the other end of the candle and get to work.

Effort

It’s all about the work you’re willing to put in or not. The last few days I’ve haven’t made that commitment I’d hoped for in my hobbies. Today we get back on track.

Photography Journey Day 22 Recap of 11/22/23

The day got away from me yesterday. I didn’t pick up the camera much. The only shot I took that I liked was below. Some days my body won’t cooperate. Some days it’s my mind. I usually can make those days productive still. But both give me pause and less accomplishment.

I did catch a few educational videos on my new camera. Also sorted and stored some physical prints. I have a wall of professional items from my career that I’m also working on arranging in the basement. And I picked up the Dremel tool, so the day wasn’t a total loss. It just felt like I wasted a lot of time. And that is one thing you can’t get back.

Keep it rolling

Let me sit and pound some drums, I feel like Neil Peart. Hand me that guitar and let me rip like Eddie Van Halen and duck walk like Angus Young. Move out the way, I want to dance like Gene Kelly.

I can’t believe it’s Friday already. I felt a little inspired this early morning. I worked on some photo editing and took the cover off the printer and got going on a few more display prints for the basement.

And then it went and got cold and snowing.

Photography Journey Day 21 recap – 11/21/24

Yesterday I worked on some editing and organization. Did a few uploads to the photo site and participated in a new photo group blog called ThursdayDoors.

We were busy with childcare, and I didn’t take advantage of that opportunity but I’ll get another shot at it this coming Thursday when the family gathers for Thanksgiving.

I shot these at the Marriottsville Bridge crossing the South Branch of the Patapsco River.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve gotten a little lax lately and put on a few pounds. Time to shed those before Thanksgiving.
  • Dr Oz. Is that a name or philosophy?
  • Starting to incorporate walnuts into the diet more.
  • I would say “where does the day go” but I’m afraid another one might disappear.

Out each day

Sometimes I feel selfish devoting time to my hobbies. I think that is one reason I don’t mind waking up early because I’m not taking time away from our relationship because she is sleeping. I’m excited to get busy with my hobbies and I’m going to accelerate my morning activities.

Photography Journey Day 20 – 11/20/24

The weather will present some opportunities in the next few days. Some rain tonight and high winds on Thursday and Friday. Of course, high winds also make me nervous about losing power with all those trees surrounding the power lines.

A couple errands let me be out and about today. I don’t know what it is, but I’m drawn to the Patapsco River lately. I’ve always enjoyed shooting around water. I’m going to try some trails this weekend that I haven’t ventured through before.

Photography Journey Day 19 – 11/19/24

I guess I should start naming these guys. I’ll be catching them around the yard this winter.

Note sure how much more shooting I’ll get to this day. I’m trying to edit, upload and sort the most recent weeks and then start the process of going through the library and figuring what I haven’t edited and uploaded.

Good Start

A fairly productive Monday so far and lots of time left for more work.

Photo Journey Day 18 – 11/18/24

This post is looking a little grey even though its light on words. I have one more batch to edit from shots I took at the end of Henryton Road. I’ve been sharing them with a Patapsco group on Facebook and gotten some interest so I’ll keep trying to do my best to see if I can pick up some tips from others on spots to shoot from or trails to hike.

Finding out

Listening to some music this morning when an old song I hadn’t gotten down to in a little while made me really pause. The song was Find the Cost of Freedom by Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

I can’t remember this country being so divided since the Vietnam war era. And somehow I think this might even be a more dangerous time.

It’s possible we are about to find out again what Freedom Cost.

Brothers in a bin

I always keep an extra leg to stand on around the house, in the car and often on the camera. We have some light rain this morning and I see clouds in the forecast. That coupled with some other duties today will limit my shooting a bit.

Photography Journey Day 15 – 11/15/24

Tripods, something I’ve rarely employed but I’m going to change that dynamic. The first reason is I’m just not as stable as I used to be. And the equipment I use isn’t particularly light. In addition, I’m shooting at greater focal lengths now and the less vibration, the better the image.

I anticipate the need for these more as I age. Photo by Mike Hartley

I have 4 of them. The two above, and two full size ones. One from my parents that I think was made in the 1950s. It’s a Davidson Star D Aluminum tripod. I still use it and but mainly the indoor unit. One of the legs at full length won’t stay tight.

The main unit is a MeFoto Roadtrip aluminum in Red. Match my car color almost. It’s a nice steady unit that holds a DSLR and a heavy lens with ease. It’s fairly lightweight and adjustable. And it was in my price range. (always the great determiner)

This will be a regular companion from now on. Photo by Mike Hartley

Here it is evening already and I haven’t shot anything today so far. We were helping the family with young ones and old ones. They both need watching. It was fun as always, but kind of draining.

Maybe this is the night I step outside for some evening shooting. I’ll have to see if I have any energy left after watching the basketball game.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I wonder if Bezos has Musk envy.
  • There is a lot to be said. Trouble is it’s become a game of one upmanship.
  • Dealing with some tough issues. It’s kind of impeding my creativity and spirit.
  • When someone wants to put my family or my health at risk, they should realize that it is a two way street.

Working through it

I see that my OS on both computers got an update as well as a new version of chrome again. I feel mentally refreshed after a good 7 hours of sleep. The body feels otherwise. I left the camera batteries charging this morning and we are ready to roll again. Unfortunately, the weather outside is cloudy and rain starts this afternoon.

So making the best of a less than optimal day and continuing to learn.

Photography Journey Day 14 – 11/14/24

I love getting outside when it’s nice to take photographs. I struggle when it’s not so nice to get motivated and creative. I have a chance to work on that weakness today.

So, I thought what do I shoot inside because I had just put the cover on the car.

I thought about what is unique about the interior of the house. Ahh, the granddaughter’s growth record on my sons doorframe. She gets so excited when I make a new mark. I got to get a picture of her smile someday when we are doing that measurement. Better yet a video. That will have to be another day.

Then I opened a box of things I was sorting of my father’s trying to decide what to keep and organize. In it was his WWII googles. I said let me get this and share its history. I believe he also had a similar pair for Operation Deep Freeze.

Photo Tasks accomplished today

  • Went through 200 slides and only kept about half. I have thousands to go.
  • Started to organize about 2-300 prints by category and file with existing ones.
  • While stretching the back out on the floor I reached over and grabbed a few volumes of photo history (below) and skimmed.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I smile at the memory of going with my Son to get our haircuts at Sal’s Barbershop and then having breakfast at the Forest Diner. I can’t believe that was decades ago.
  • I’m too old for the amount of conflict coming. Don’t get me wrong though, I can still give it out.
  • I wonder if this camera I just purchased is my last? Given the length of time I use cameras I could be a very old man when this one bites the dust. If so I hope it gets a good workout before I go.
  • I haven’t heard my daughters voice in a while. I miss it.
  • My mind is getting weak, pain and discomfort are taking over thought and creative juices.

Style

As I was leaving the wonders of my nature walk along the Patapsco River yesterday, I saw a man made wonder and snapped my last two frames of the day.

I thought to myself this looks good coming and going. I love the style of the old cars. Things today look so much the same from one manufacturer to another with some rare exceptions. Even trucks have all taken on the same features.

Styling is important. Not just in cars but in this forum also. I haven’t found my style as a photographer yet. I’ll probably be searching for it for a while being I’m still learning the craft.

I’ve got to bring more style to this site also. At least I’m getting a better balance of images to words.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel I’m always charging a battery of some sort. I must keep in mind to keep my own recharged.
  • I see some bad signs on the horizon. But I’m not worried because I know where I will stand.
  • We went right into the Medicare commercial barrage from the political one. And here I thought we were going to catch a break.
  • A good day for indoor photography. But I will venture out sometime for a rain shot.

Pretty good Wednesday

Any day that the doctor says “your all good, see you next year” it’s a good day. It was also a very quick appointment and NO WAIT. I should have got a lottery ticket today. Now if I can get the same reaction from some other doctors I see I’ll be dancing in the rain.

So onto the enjoyment of the day.

Photography Journey Day 13 – 11/13/24

Took my first bird shot with the new camera around sunrise this morning in my backyard. This task will serve a dual purpose. I’ll try to learn the types of birds along the way.

Not sure about this one. An Eastern Bluebird or female Mountain Bluebird.

After the doctor’s visit I was short on daylight so I headed to a spot near the home. The Patapsco River where it crosses under Woodstock/Old Court Road is about a mile down the road. The shot below is standing on the bridge over it.

I can see clearly now, the leaves have gone. Photo by Mike Hartley

Of course, I had to go down by the water, bad knee and all, and get a shot of the bridge I was on.

I’ll make sure to hike down here when the temps get colder and the ice starts to form.

It doesn’t look cold yet. Photo by Mike Hartley

What I learned today.

  • Hiking with my new camera is a lot easier than the big Nikon.
  • Even though you’re out in the wild doesn’t mean wildlife will be there with you.
  • I’m going to have to start taking my tripod with me more.
  • You can only capture your next shot if you’re out trying to get it.

Church and State

While I was shooting this church yesterday one of the thoughts that has been on my mind is the separation of Church and State in this country. I’m not sure these lines won’t try to be blurred in the coming years. I think that is dangerous.

Politics has been active in our churches in the last few decades unlike I recall in my youth. I have some differences with the faith I was raised in, which has led to far less participation in the traditional sense. And I believe it’s also a reason church attendance has dropped off. Politics, stances on abortion rights and some unforgivable transgressions have fractured churches in my opinion.

You have these mega-churches supporting rich and famous lifestyles for their leaders and wielding great political influence. Therefore more power and more money. I don’t get the following of these television preachers. Again my personal opinion is that they talk the talk but I’m not sure they walk the walk.

I probably should have stayed away from this topic but it’s coming to a head anyway. I try to respect all faiths and I respect those who chose not to practice any faith. I have a very good friend who is an atheist and he acts a lot more Christian than some who pretend to be.

Maybe if people referred to the words found in their faith they might be a lot more accepting and helpful of and for each other.

I think I remember a phrase I heard some time ago. Our strength is in our differences. Forcing school prayer of one or any faith is wrong IMHO.

Tuesday

The day didn’t start well with Verizon’s internet service being down for a few hours early this morning while I was trying to work. I do have a limited backup. But getting support from Verizon isn’t a pleasant process.

Photography Journey Day 12 – 11/12/24

I know it’s not winter yet but I’ll complain anyway. I don’t like cool or cold wind and it was blowing good today. The few leaves left on the trees were mostly on the ground today.

In my continuing effort to bring the best parts of Howard County out in pictures. I drove along the north edge of the county on River Road which borders the South Branch of the Patapsco River. That has some wonderful views in all seasons. Oh, there is one shot of the back of some buildings in Sykesville where I pick up River Road.

Creating a studio

I shot this a few weeks back because that sign “Studio One” caught my attention. The thought of creating a studio in my home has been a wish for a bit and I’m starting to take steps towards it. Got my first light about a year ago. I’ve got a few tripods and I found my good flash.

Through some creative means, I’ve got a few backdrops. I’m cleaning out some old family items and creating some space for work. It’s just the time for it because as you may have heard me grouse about, the cold weather. So I’m thinking of a name for my Studio. I’ll get back you on that one.

I’m kind of excited about the coming holidays and maybe doing some portraits when the family is over. Unlike previous years when I was working nights, I hope to utilize the coming season to capture a lot of the spirit of the holidays in lights.

But first, there is today. And that means getting outside and some shooting on this beautiful Monday in central Maryland.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve never lived in a home with a garage.
  • I cried the first time I heard Taps and every time since then.
  • Found a happy picture of myself when I was young. Of course, there was a pet in my lap.
  • There is a scene awaiting my camera so I must go.

Salute

On this Veterans Day, I would like to express my respect and thanks to Veterans who serve and have served our country. Much appreciation for those men and women today.

Slacking again

Our monthly Miata club meeting starts in about 5 minutes. It’s cloudy and hazy out which isn’t any good for photographing. It’s cold out which I abhor. Yeah, I know, I’m slacking. I should have been ready a few hours ago but a leisurely morning with my better half and time got away from me.

Everyone in the club seems nice so far. I’ve only been to a half dozen meetings but it’s an active group who really like this car. The Facebook group is active every day with multiple posts. It’s a very helpful and responsive club.

It seems to encourage the feeling I used to have when seeing another biker and acknowledging them. I also like the ideas and modifications a lot of them have done.

I’ve got a virgin (stock) model that I haven’t modified yet but the time is soon coming. Mostly because of age, my go-cart will be 9 years old next year. This coming year I hope to do a bit more photography for the group and maybe go to one of the track events and also do some shooting.

All I know is these cars are a lot of fun to drive and finding a group of fellow enthusiasts is a nice treat.

Which reminds me with the rains coming in a few hours I should go throw the cover on the ride. I’ve thought about storing it this winter for a month or two.

Making it work

I was excited about the weekend but the body had other ideas. No problem because I hope to make up for a lost opportunities. I started out strong on chores yesterday but faded fast and didn’t do any new shooting. But I did try to educate myself and did a few test.

Photography Journey Day 9 recap– 11/9/24

Uploaded some of this week’s shooting to the Zenfolio site.

Watched another video or two on shooting wildlife. Going to try some continuous shooting this week. Being rather old school photography, (film generation) I never wasted frames. And I never got that chip removed from my memory banks. I’ve finally accepted the new world and to take advantage of the tools.

Yes I know they had motor drives back in my day but they were beyond my financial reach.

I took some time to look at and optimize settings. I did a little experimenting with Noise Reduction settings and have decided to keep it on Low. This camera doesn’t allow it to be off apparently. Changed JPEG resolution to high and tinkered with shooting RAW options.

It might be that I may have to use exposure compensation a bit more with this camera than the DSLR Nikon. I’m going to have to do some side by side testing.

Daniels Dam

Good evening and welcome to a Friday evening. One I’ll spend by myself, not feeling social. But I am hard at work on images and thoughts to transfer into action.

Photography Journey Day 8 – 11/8/24

This is a nice relaxing spot I like in Howard County. It’s very small and only has parking for maybe a dozen cars and they will tow your behind if you park illegally. And usually, it gets crowded quickly. I haven’t walked many of the trails but I hope to this coming year.

I used to take lunch down there some days when I worked in Ellicott City decades ago.

It felt good to get out and walk today. I think I’ll go put a few miles on the feet tomorrow.

I’ll work my way along the Patapsco tomorrow also.

I read earlier this summer that the dam is slated for removal. Not sure of the timeframe for that but this one looks a bit more complicated than some of the others that were removed.

The water still looks inviting. But you could feel the coolness as you got closer to it.

If you’re into hills there are a few around here. Photo by Mike Hartley

Half the fun of this site is the long twisty Daniels road leading to the dam. Just be careful on those turns please, lots of them are blind.

My ride is always easy to find. It’s not a truck or SUV. Photo by Mike Hartley

5 parking spots on this upper lot and maybe 7-8 on the one below the dam.

Tonight’s photo journey will be learning the new tool more and maybe testing some portrait work.

I’m all ears

I said I need to work on my listening skills. These two were side by side when one looked back.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s almost SOUP Season.
  • For a bit I was wondering if a Costco membership was worth it. I believe it is.
  • If today was the last 70+ degree day with the sun out this year I’m glad I took advantage of it and put the top down for a ride.
  • I could probably live without the land line but it’s a nostalgia thing.

Yet another reason

I was reading this morning in The Washingtonian that The Washington Post is telling it’s staff it’s back in the office 5 days a week. Boy, am I glad I’m retired! I could never get used to going back and forth to that site after working at home for the last few years.

I feel for the people who had made a better life and avoided that horrendous commute downtown and the associated problems in working there. The cost of parking, expensive food options, crime, and other perks await them again.

That new office never felt like home anyway. I wish them all well, there are some good hard-working honest people there. For some reason, I’m suspicious of the collaboration reason and leaning more towards the control one. Just my opinion.

Also it could be a way to thin the herd being they just lost so many subscribers. Only time will tell. Hard to predict what song Jeff is telling them to sing now.

Timing

Time is flying by and so are opportunities. I’ve missed a few this morning but I’ll recover. Like the athlete, looking for the next pitch or next shot or next game. Looking forward, learning from past mistakes is the way to go.

A cloudy sunrise is giving way to sunshine so I’m heading out to test more of this new camera while running a few errands.

Photography Journey Day 7 recap – 11/7/24

  • Watched some more videos on my new camera.
  • I’m working on testing scene modes against what I might shoot manually.
  • Cleaned the D7100.
  • Shot some nature out back.
  • Read more of The Photographers Playbook

I’m looking at each day as its own opportunity. And while it appears there is no path forward I will forge my own. Maybe someone will follow. Or maybe I’ll cross paths with other like minded individuals to smile and enjoy life with.

Luckily I got one by my side.
