What a wonderful Wednesday! Exercise in some warm weather, a ride with the top down on the car, and a meal out. An evening of basketball and photograph work.
Photography Journey Day 6 – 11/6/2024
The new camera in hand and out I went. Boy do I need some time to get familiar with all these controls. And I look forward to spending that time learning and perfecting my skills with it.

I can already tell I’m going to need to use the tripod more. I’m also thinking about adding a monopod to the collection.

The weight of the new unit is somewhere between the old point and shoot and my DSLR D7100. It’s something I can carry on a long walk/hike.
Hopefully its a step up in my future image quality. Photo by Mike Hartley
This shot below is special because it looks so normal and I waited for it to look like this. I saw these two walking down the dock towards this bench. You might not pick up on it but that is a walking cane folded up next to her on the seat. The young lady looking at her smartphone had just assisted walking her down on this sunny day.
And though she is sight impaired, she seems to be the one enjoying this beautiful day but looking up at the building skyline and feeling the sun. I smiled when I shot this and I smiled when I came across it to edit it. For it reminds me to think beyond limitations that life may place on you and enjoy the moment.

This gentlemen reminds me it’s time for a lunch break. Or more appropriately a bite of breakfast.

But after that break there is no sitting on my ass today. I will be out and about testing aspect of my new toy.

I woke today to find myself in the minority opinion in this country. It’s not a small minority but it fell short of the goal and therefore is subject to the results.
But my approach this time has to be different. I remember the frustration the former term gave me and I’m not going to repeat that. Life is too short to be unhappy.
So I’m going into survival mode. I’m not even sure what that means yet but it’s going to start with a lot less TV. I’ll read my news and keep that limited to a few trusted sources.
The last time it split family and friends and I’m expecting more of that. I also expect poor behavior and discourse to increase so I’m preparing for that also.
Financially this changes a lot of things. I’m not the believer he’s the economic guru he pretends to be. And if he is, I’m not in the class that is going to benefit from it.
I’ll do my best to further restrain sharing any political opinions here in the future. Not like I spent a lot of time on it anyway. I’ll just stay in my lane. But I am worried for my children and grandchildren.
Either we are going into deep water or coming out of it. Photo by Mike Hartley
Random Thoughts of the Day
The good old days might have been quite recent.
A walk, lunch, and ice cream with my better half and all is right with the world for a few minutes.
If they come to take me away, the phrase “Say hello to my little friend” comes to mind.
What a wonderful few days weather-wise at the beginning of November. Feeling good and closing the year out strong. I’m developing the proper mindset to keep doing my best.
But first a goodbye to an old friend below. This little Kodak z812is captured a lot of history for this family and many trips. It was always with me. I’m going to pass it down to my granddaughter soon and work with her on taking pictures.
Photography Journey Day 5 Recap- 11/5/24
I’ve gotten some new equipment and the learning process has begun. With any new tool its important to learn the techniques that produce your best work. I’m a strong believer in RTFM. But I’ll begin with all the online videos. I’ll be experimenting with what settings I’m not already familiar with.
It’s got me excited about educating myself once again. I’ve just taken my first few shots and hope to head out around sunrise to see what I can capture with this new tool.
This is the first election I haven’t worked at a newspaper since 1976. It feels very strange and I miss the excitement and pressure. It’s kind of the first time I missed work since I retired at the beginning of the year. That’s 12 Presidential elections and I think 13 midterms.
It was the one time of year I saw a lot of the day shift folks I once worked with. Most of the action is between 5 pm and 3 am most years. With the last few being the exception.
I think I’ll send my old managers a text this evening and wish them well because it’s a busy and long evening.
Retirement puts a whole new perspective on Mondays.

Photography Journey Day 4 – 11/4
Both batteries for the camera have been charged and I was ready to shoot today. The body is not on the same page and that along with some chores slowed my roll during the day but I will bounce back this evening. And maybe I’ll even be out the door before the sun rises tomorrow.
I see a lot of similarities between photography and life. For instance, if you don’t get out and experience and see things, life can be less than fulfilling. Most times in life and photography, it’s up to you to see the beauty.
Sometimes your imagination can capture other’s imagination.
To me, it captures the memories and experiences of my life as I meander through its aisles. It’s a visual history for my kids and grandkids.
I learned today that not feeling well might alter where and when I shoot but it won’t prevent me from shooting.
Tonight’s agenda:
Download and edit the product shots I did this afternoon.
Upload images to the Zenfolio site.
Make some prints for both the Ocean City and Ellicott City projects.
Read some more of “The Photographers Playbook”
Read two articles on shooting wildlife.
Find something interesting tonight to shoot and share first thing tomorrow morning.
The title Brown Noser came to mind as I edited this shot below. Real brown nosers make me laugh now looking back at them. They made me laugh back then also. I don’t run into many now in retirement.

Random Thoughts of the Day
I’m trying to commit to cooking more. Sort of like the old Wanted posters “Dead or Alive”
We seem to surround each other and at the same time, we are so lonely.
Found a picture of my kindergarten class. At first, I smiled and then I got scared about how long ago that was.
I think the mind and the body are in a race to see which can cause the most chaos.
I have no proof but I think drinking a glass of milk a day has been good for me.
The view of this day is optimistic. The weather is sunny and warming slowly, the time is available for adventure and while not feeling 100%, there is reserve strength to be used. I’ve got the camera batteries charged and I hope to get out and about and capture some of life.
I meant to post the section below last night but I passed out early.

Photography Journey Day 3Recap
I was productive but not in the traditional sense.
I ordered a new camera. After a bit of research and talking to some technical people the choice was made. The two I’ve been using were purchased in 2007 and 2014. A Kodak Z812 IS and a Nikon D7100. I’m not going to divulge what I’m replacing the old Kodak with for a bit and first see if I can feel a difference in my photography.
Of course, I’m well aware equipment doesn’t make the photographer. I’ve made the choice based on developing some areas of shooting interest. Hopefully, they will be fully evident when I get to work.
I’m of the age where I thought to myself is this the last camera I’ll own? It might be given the length of time I seem to use them for. I hope it’s not, I hope I wear it out and have enough energy and desire in my late senior years to need another new one to keep plugging away at this craft.
My better half recognized how much I enjoyed it and encouraged me to move forward with it. Thanks for the support, my love.
Sometimes people don’t care to be photographed. Funny how it only happens when I’m using my big Nikon though. He’s probably unaware there are video cameras watching him more closely than I was. Actually I was just going for a shot of the train and bike by itself sitting there.
The look. Photo by Mike Hartley
First off I don’t photograph to make people look bad intentionally. Or even by accident like this but I do run into this more with the conventional camera because its so obvious. For all he knows I could be zoomed in on the banner, light and bell at the top of the train front.
Maybe he was just having a bad day that the scowl wasn’t for me. Whatever it was I hope the bike ride cured it.
I’m going to try my hand at shooting more people and hopefully not piss anyone off. Guess I’ll use that sneaky cell phone.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Workroom is the cleanest its been in a few decades. I’m pretty dirty though.
A wonderful Saturday ahead. One with some chores but many opportunities. My better half is storing the Halloween items and getting out the Thanksgiving and fall items that she hasn’t already.

Photo journey day 2.
In watching a lot of reviews on cameras I’ve noticed a few things.
There is no shortage of people with opinions and reviews of cameras.
Despite the amount of photography being done on phones there is still a great selection of conventional cameras.
Don’t worry, I won’t add to that flooded field of sharing my opinions on the good and bad of each.
VLOGing features and focus on looking at self, seem to be all the rage. I still don’t get it.
The more I watch the more I narrow down what options there are based on what I can afford and what I hope to do with it.
I’ve done maybe a dozen spec comparisons on the B&H Photo site. I have to do some soul searching tonight and make the order. If you know what your getting before ordering it, there shouldn’t be any surprises or disappointments.
Just beginning to scratch the surface of working in photography, I’m like a kid in a candy store not knowing what to taste first. I’ve enjoyed landscape and car photography. Wildlife and architecture also. I haven’t had much practice at storm photography but it’s certainly enticing.
The pet and flower photography used to draw more interest from me but has waned in recent times. I need to do more portraits, sports, and street shooting. Some documentary pieces would be fun also.
I’ve been doing a little more food shooting this year and I wouldn’t mind practicing some product shots this winter to keep me busy inside. I might teach myself a few things about lighting along the way.
Of course the typical family shooting for years along with the local community events and towns.
I’m too busy learning and doing to teach anything so it’s just going to be my experiences, thoughts, and images in this journey. I have no problem being a perpetual student. That way I don’t miss anything important or stop developing.
What I learned yesterday. – Fall is fleeting, shoot fast.
Are you sure you want to check and see if Judy is home? Photo by Mike Hartley
The talking has been done and time for some serious action. I was feeling good about some of my efforts in October. Probably my strongest shooting month this year by far. Also one that I stepped up printing efforts and finally got backup of the backup. And I’m moving images into my portfolio faster than in previous months.
But I’m still capable of much more and it’s time to get to it.
So where to on my photo journey of the day?
I thought about photographing the leftover Halloween candy but that would tempt me to pick up another piece so I nixed that idea.
Good old Kodak Film and GE flashbulbs. Photo by Mike Hartley
The rule of the month is to get a camera in my hands as often as possible and shoot shoot and shoot some more. So while I was out walking the neighborhood I grabbed a few shots. I saw this redness gleaming from a few doors down the street so off I went.

And this nest which was exposed when the leaves fell from this tree. I believe that could be a bald faced hornets next if my past experience is correct.
Always good to be aware of your surroundings.Photo by Mike Hartley
There is a lot to be said for just walking around. You meet people, you experience nature, you breathe clean air, your body and mind feel better.
The tree is nice but the Grand National under that cover is also a thing of beauty. Photo by Mike Hartley
I think it was 2007 when I got the Kodak Z812 IS and it’s been a workhorse. Sometimes the battery doesn’t take a full charge. Even when it does the zoom and autofocus seem to be operating slower and slower. I’m about to abandon this old digital camera. It’s seen its day and many beyond its years. It’s a little point-and-shoot model that was a steal.
It still works well and I’ll use it to train the grandchildren. But time for me to move on to the next one. I will say it’s been a great tool and having the alternative to the heavy and bulky Nikon body and lens is great in certain situations.
It’s provided many wonderful shots in my portfolio and will take a spot on the counter of old family cameras. So its time to make a decision on its replacement and place the order.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Learning how to use light is a lot of fun.
I forgot how much I liked Nestles Crunch bars.
Vegetable egg rolls and Chick fill A dipping sauce isn’t a bad combination.
Might try my hand at doing some electrical work. And then a lightbulb went off and I thought better of it.
In a world of pickups and SUVs, my little Miata is always feeling pinched in parking lots. Well, I got a space in Ocean City that I was just tickled to death about. I even heard someone say “That’s wrong” after looking at it.

New TV Rules are in effect.
Look at the guide in the morning and decide if I’m watching anything live.
Record things I think I’d like. – This is good because most the time I don’t go back and watch.
TV stays off when not watching, no more background noise.
It’s okay to watch if I’m on the treadmill.
Don’t watch some of my favorite movies every time they come on again.
We may not be as divided as we appear to be. At least I don’t think we are. I think the middle far outnumbers the extreme on both sides.
I’ve voted, I’ve taken a chill pill, and might not watch much besides sports for the next week. Plus I’m looking to up my output this coming month in both hobbies and exercise.

Maybe we can meet each other halfway and get things done that would make the majority happy.
Almost time for the young ones to come frightening us old folks. We’re ready to send them back on their way with candy.
I used to have a set in flat black. Hooker Headers and side pipes sound great. Photo by Mike Hartley
Sorry about the absence, I’ve been playing grandparent and yard boy. Also trying to help some friends and family. I joined the Maryland Miata Club and I’m trying to contribute some time there.
Tonight I begin tearing my office apart to improve the use of space. Also, I’m firing up the printer again and doing some uploads to the photo site. Should be a busy evening.
But I also hope to get back to the 3 posts a day and maybe more if inspired. But for now, I have to get back outside and finish a few things before hitting the showers.
Just ran out of energy yesterday. A few hours on the road and several with a 2-year-old have sapped my resources. That and not sleeping well of late.
But no complaint here, it was a fun day and special day. I’m hoping for the epic comeback by the NY Yankees in the World Series. Maybe the phrase “hope springs eternal” is something to hang my hat on.
Time and pressure. Photo by Mike Hartley
In the next few days, I hope to spend some time behind the wheel and make some stops for fresh images to share here and elsewhere.
So a good morning to you all, and let’s start having some fun on this wonderful Wednesday.
Random Thoughts of the Day
My son and daughter-in-law made my day yesterday. I’ll explain at another time.
Are you sure Halloween hasn’t passed yet? I’m certainly eating a lot of candy.
An interesting week ahead. Or is it just the preliminaries?
I’m going to de-stress by getting outside in this nice weather. A snowball sounds good also.
I noticed another blogger proudly ran an image of his backyard recently and I do like mine so I thought I’d share it. Sorry the winds kind of took down a lot of the foliage. I love living in Central Maryland. And I was fortunate to have woods behind my home growing up and I have them now in my senior years.
Nice to look at, tough to mow. Photo by Mike Hartley
We have been very lucky in our selection of homes. Well we only have had two. The first one we were only in for 4 years because we wanted to be back in the county we grew up in and raise our children here.
So we have been at this home for decades now. The woods and wildlife are my favorite things but I do like just about everything about the property and home. I would like a garage but I can sacrifice.
It had a pool when we moved in. Well, let me be more specific, it was a big hole in the ground with a liner that had given up years before and it was a green pond with critters. The filter was shot and the pump wasn’t running. We didn’t want a pool and wasn’t looking for a home with one but after starting a family a few years after moving in it was a nice thing.
But pools are money pits and in retrospect for what it costs to maintain and upkeep I should have filled it in long before I did. But the kids enjoyed it so it served it’s purpose for a while.
I was out today looking at a firepit for the area that the pool used to reside. I’ll take my better half back later this week and see what we can get.
A busy evening ahead, for the photo printer.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Grilling season is fading quickly. But despite the 50 & 60 degree temps I will persist tonight.
I’m really in need of a Yankee victory tonight.
Looking for my second wind. Didn’t sleep well last night.
Time to switch wardrobes.
Treadmill time again? Yep. Away I go. I knew I’d pay as soon as I saw that candy come in the house.
Okay, the sun’s been up for a bit, it’s time to get busy.
I’m not sure why but I’m looking forward to this day. Monday’s usually mean the family and friends are back to work and I’m left to my devices. And this one is no exception.
I just know that I’m in good spirits and hoping to create something special this fine sunny morning.
I love theirLife is Good tee shirts. They are so soft and I like the sayings and artwork on them. But I was thinking life is good this morning because I’m seeing opportunities to grow and expand my hobbies.
I’ll be replacing an old camera soon. I’m giving Canva a try to see if I can get more graphics into the blog. Also, stuff for the grandchildren to get them into the arts. Writing is becoming more fluid now. I’m not sure why, but it’s flowing with ease.
Life is really good because we are expecting another grandchild and it was announced this morning that it will be a girl. Lots of happy people on a Facetime call this morning.
It’s been a lazy Sunday. Did some quick shopping for a toy donation this morning. A BBQ at lunch and then some couch time because I was feeling a bit weak.
I haven’t photographed as intended and I’ve still got most of my workout ahead of me. At least the first two miles are in the books.

Random Thoughts of the Day
I love watching the sunrise and sunset at the beach, even on a webcam. The one above was in person.
Looking forward to a haircut tomorrow. I’ve gotten a bit shaggy.
Temps in the mid-30s tonight. I think I’ll gather some wood for the fireplace soon.
I don’t intend on wasting any of the 4 remaining days of October.
Prognosticators are everywhere for everything. Sports, politics, environment, finances, technology, aliens, and whatever can create some attention. We all dabble at it ourselves. What will the weather be? Who gets the next promotion at the job? Will my team make it to the playoffs?
There are more experts than readers/viewers it seems at times. With legal betting on sports, the screens are filled with shows on what and who to wager on might outnumber the actual games. And the games themselves have stats and odds bettors want to see in real-time.
Then there is the endless flood of commercials for wagering services for every sport you want. How do you think they advertise so much? They are making money hand over fist.
So many flooding the airwaves or your inbox. Religions, employers, family, friends, and neighbors tell you what is right and what to believe.
Evolving at times is uncomfortable. Some get comfortable with certain perspectives and don’t alter them.
I’m no good at predicting most things, but I don’t let that stop me. I’m fairly good with the weather because of riding a motorcycle for a few decades. I used to feel comfortable sharing predictions, but like opinions, that comes with risks now. I’m trying to stay away from predictions now unless pressed for an answer.
But I will make this prediction. It’s going to be a very productive week ahead.
The ups and downs in life with a smile. I keep trying to put one on. The more I have one the better I feel. Fake ones don’t count.
So I did something to make me feel better. I got tickets to 2 Maryland basketball games this year for my son and me.
As I was taking apart my hammock frame I noticed the paint getting very thin and rust starting. So I’ll stand that down today and paint it tomorrow. I’ll give this one to the kids when I get a new one next year.
Random Thoughts of the Day
It’s already getting light too late and dark too early. And it’s only October.
Not starting the day as I hoped but that is how goes sometimes.
Trying to remember simple joys.
That was a brutal loss last night but game 2 is this evening. Let’s steal one.
The body isn’t cooperating today but I’m powering through it and moving on. Had a wonderful lunch at a restaurant we hadn’t tried yet in Howard County. Hudson Coastal Raw Bar and Grille in Maple Lawn which is a couple of stones throws from where I grew up. The southern part of the county.
Anyway, this was my backup Seafood place to go because I just didn’t feel like making the drive to Annapolis today. Maybe next month.
It was a great meal and we will be returning again. It was a treat day for us. Oysters Rockefeller, Calamari, Crabcake and Shrimp salad sandwiches. Double graham cracker crust Key Lime pie.

Random Thoughts of the Day
I love the lyrics by RUSH in the song “Roll the Bones”
My children have hundreds of notes, cards, and more emails that are signed “Love Dad”. I have two postcards from my Dad signed “Dad”. They are among my most prized possessions.
Our furnace has been cleaned again and is ready for the winter season. At least one can hope.
Another day to escape.
John Entwistle could play the hell out of a bass guitar.
I’ve got some momentum going and I just need to keep it rolling. I was reminded of it when I tried to fit into one of these and keep moving. After a step to get my timing, I was off. The key was consistency. Unless you want to pretend you’re ten and rolling inside a tire down a hill at breakneck speeds. And my old behind doesn’t even want to fall upside down in one of these.
Rolling along. Photo by Mike Hartley
Posting 2-3 times a day is a challenge I’m enjoying. I just have to bring some quality content into it now. I’m back to shooting more again so my pictures usually inspire some better thoughts.
This is the first year I could enjoy the fall trip to the farm for pumpkin picking and various farm entertainment. (Again, retirement is great) The wagon out to the pumpkin patch was full and I was about to walk back but the guy let me ride in the cab of the Case tractor with him. Been a long while since riding in the cab on a true farm implement.

Having the morning and afternoon with the family and then some lunch together with the topping of the day being our granddaughter spending the night was wonderful. Sunday I had a chance to rest a bit and recoup without a week of work looking me in the face.
This retirement gig is pretty cool. I loved my job at several stages of my career. I liked my job when I left it, but I love what I’m doing now. And that has made life much more pleasurable again.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Critical decision on what camera to replace my old one with.
Another beautiful sunny day. I should get outside and enjoy it.
We all get so busy that it’s hard to tell which way we are headed. Are we coming or going? Thankfully my pace has slowed a little on the multitasking front. I was a clown trying to juggle too many balls for a lot of years. But now I have time to pull over and capture these two grazing in the fall season. Life is good.
I like the way I’ve turned the day around so far. Started out not feeling that hot but worked through some mental and physical things.
Back outside today but it looks like I’ll have to dress differently. My friends are already riding me about the cold coming for me. I told them I’d see them again in April of 2025.
I’m making some prints for the family today and processing some more shooting. I also have to gather up some digital files they requested. Let me focus on keeping that printer running for a few minutes and take a paper inventory.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I’m not doing this blogging thing right yet and it’s still a lot of work. But I do love it.

Not bad for out the car while rolling. Hey it’s a heavy camera and lens. At least the shot above was squared up.

It’s time to take the good camera in for some service and cleaning. I’d like to have a backup to use before that and the old Kodak is not. The phone is more reliable and a lot of times better quality. I think I got that Kodak in 2007.
I’m glad the pace is slowed this week. The last two weeks have been packed with appointments, events, trips, and much fun. It’s given me a little better balance being away from the computer for a bit longer periods.
It’s time to go for a cruise and continue the fall shooting. The top is coming down despite it being only 62 degrees. The sun feels good and it will warm quickly.
Great days for riding, or having the top down in my case. Photo by Mike Hartley
Given the number of bikes I saw out yesterday I’m guessing a few people were playing hooky from work. I did that a few days myself when I rode. Those early spring or late fall days that are warmer than usual trigger some kind of urge that is impossible to fight some days.
I think I’ll head to the part of the county I grew up in. Da Soufh, and see if I can remember some good spots to shoot. But chores will be calling me by afternoon.
Be safe, be happy.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Slow lenes like light. So say my slow camera lenes.
Time is of the essence. But I don’t feel as fast as I used to.
Figures the riding mower would mess with me on the last cut or two of the season. Push time.
I don’t want an app to make a reservation. I don’t want an app to let me into my hotel room. I don’t want an app to park. I don’t want an app to eat. I don’t want an app to shop. I don’t want an app to see a concert. I don’t want an app to pay. I don’t want an app to look at my medical records. I don’t want an app for the pharmacy.
I’m sorry about the above rant, I had to get a difficult app to park recently and lost it. I just realized if I lose my cell phone I can’t go anywhere. I got a CODE these companies can read.
Mother Nature is coming tomorrow to do some tree trimming in the form of wind which will take a lot of the fall foliage to the ground. A lot have fallen as I discovered yesterday standing by the Patapsco.
So I’m headed back out today to catch what is left on the trees. The next week or two I’ll be busy with the rake, leaf blower and mower tending to them. I remember liking the days I ran at full speed to a huge pile in the yard and just dove in.
I liked how the sun was hitting the freshly fallen leaves floating on top. Then I noticed a bunch that still had their color but had sunk to the bottom.

I loved my time working in Ellicott City even though it was short. I love visiting this town often to just take in it’s natural beauty, walk its streets, go to the dentist at the top of the street or for a meal at one of the restaurants.
A wonderful day of shooting and maybe another one ahead. I downloaded half of it and will start on the other half in a few minutes.
The top down on the go-cart soaking up rays in between shoots with the R&R adding to the motion. I might go back out this evening and tomorrow is a definite for more road time.
I’m appreciating the last few days with the tee shirt and shorts with the top-down combo. It’s going to get too cool for that from now on.

I should get to the evening’s production. Lots of editing to do and I’m feeling tired already.

I’ve been wrong about some things in life. Regardless, I move on.
I think The Who hit on something with the song “I Can’t Explain” – There is so much, I can’t explain.
I’d like to get out and do some fall color shooting today. We will see how the day progresses.
Whoops, just checked my to-do list and found I have to edit and print shots from the family visit to the farm.
Also a few errands to run today so I’m glad I got moving around 3 am.
But the first order of business is to VOTE.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Almost time to think about hibernating again.
Voids in life aren’t good.
As age increases, tolerance fades.
Revelations about life can have profound changes in perspective.
I think I found the color I’ll paint my car next. I’m also going with a tan top when that is time. I never thought about it being my last car but it just might be. I hope to keep it running a good while longer. At least as long as it takes to teach my grandchildren how to drive a stick.
I did a post on October 14th of a few images from the Endless Summer Crusin event in Ocean City Maryland. I mentioned that I had a lot more to edit, several hundred. I put a gallery up OCES24 this morning of the 577 images from that 2-day shoot.
I knew I would like this event, the sounds, smells, and sights. But it was great fun shooting it also. I have attended local car shows and tried some shooting but the weather, location, and volume of unique and special works of rolling art and horsepower were beyond what I imagined.

I’m guessing there were a couple thousand cars/trucks/vans/antiques and specialty vehicles that I only got a sampling of. I shot the boardwalk parade from a balcony Friday morning and from the boardwalk on Saturday. We also had a one-day pass to the Inlet parking lot and Convention Center and lots.
I liked the high angle on some of the cars. The design perspective changes a lot from the normal eye level. I just did a little crop on some. I did no color correction. These paint jobs didn’t need any.
Next year I’m going to concentrate on some of the club meetings around town and just the cruising action shots. And start doing some video also.
Health issues took two hours from my time on Saturday and I probably overwalked on my bum knee but all is well and it was one of the best trips to the beach I’ve ever had.

Next year I know to use the tripod to shoot from the balcony. My hands aren’t as steady as they used to be. And that heavy Nikon and zoom lens is a cinderblock in disguise.
I liked some of the low-angle shots but they were punishing on the knees. (order a kneepad)
I still don’t take enough frames. An old habit of shooting with film.
Be patient. Big events equal big crowds. You might have to wait a few minutes to get a good shot.
Finding the right angles with that early morning sun being so low in the sky is key.
15th Street was a pretty good location. Still going to search for another spot though. Or maybe a corner room where I could shoot down the boardwalk also.
I learned not to be near anyone with a coffee. Yep had one spilled on my Nikon. Still operating but it’s going to need a good cleaning.
Get more crowd shots. The number of people lining the streets day and night is impressive.
This was the last year using the old Kodak on anything. I’ll give it to my granddaughter and teach her about photography. Well maybe another year, she’s still young.
Maybe the last nice stretch of weather is upon us in the state of Maryland. I believe I’ll do some grilling in the next few days.
Saturday we went to Local Homestead Products Farm in New Windsor MD. It was a great time with the family. Stopped by this BBQ stand (RK’s BBQ) and had an excellent BBQ Sunday. Cornbread topped with pulled pork and coleslaw and BBQ sauce drizzled over it.
Nice touch. Photo by Mike Hartley
Today a milestone celebration for a brother-in-law. When numbers get this big we just don’t list them. He looks good and stays active. That is one of the major keys and one that helps when you get into your senior years.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I used to push this body and mind too hard. The bills might be coming due.
I used to worry about age. I’m just glad to wake up each morning.
At daybreak, I hope to be ready to go out and catch some of that fall color starting to dot the area.
A fine line between awake and asleep. I straddle that line a lot lately.
I have no scheduled travel plans this coming week so I think I’ll forge ahead and purchase a firepit. I meant to do that last year and with November coming it’s the season to make some use of the patio on the side of the house.
Who knows, it might get me outside a bit more during the cooler days and nights. What triggered it was being outside by a firepit the other evening at Rocky Gap. I wandered out to one for a few moments and it was nice.

These were nice gas pits but I’m looking for a wood-burning one. I’ll gather up my gift cards to Ace Hardware and pull the trigger on that this coming Monday or Tuesday.
I didn’t get as much done today as I hoped, but I’m satisfied with the good effort. And there is still time to add to the day’s production. I’m down to the last 300 images to edit and hopefully, I’ll upload all the ones that passed some mustard to the photo site.

I love shrimp.
My knee doesn’t seem to be improving.
Crap, I need to order ink again.
The space heater has been activated for the season.
Time to vote. One of my favorite things about living in this country.
My better half and I took a trip to Western Maryland this week. Allegany County to be specific. It’s quite the contrast to the Maryland Eastern Shore trip we took last week. The thing they have in common though is they are both beautiful.

The colors were out on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad we took on Wednesday. It’s very near peak season for the trees to change.
We sat in an enclosed car but they do have open-air cars on the train. Photo by Mike Hartley
The contrast of the lower eastern shore’s recent visit accentuated the height of the mountains we traveled on our way to Cumberland.

One thing I love about the eastern and western parts of the state is that they are rural. There are open spaces. Well Ocean City itself hasn’t an inch of open space but everything on the way there is.
I still think the prime color is about a week off. Photo by Mike Hartley
I know we will be heading west again, probably in the spring. They do have a Winter Express train which sounded nice but driving out there in the dead of winter won’t be as pleasant as this ride was this week.

We stayed a night at Rocky Gap Casino Resort and Golf. No, I didn’t play golf. I did casino and resort though. Some nice firepits outside at night, beautiful views of the lake, and surrounding grounds and state park.

This was the second train ride I’ve taken this year. I like it.
I’m into motors but this is a bit out of my range. Photo by Mike Hartley
It rained, misted, and was mostly overcast the entire day with a few precious peeks of sun. But it was a very nice day and ride, one we will take again. I’ll make sure to do one in the summer when the ice cream stand at the top of the station will get some of my business.
I met my daughter for dinner at Mt Washington Tavern last week. I highly recommend this spot. I arrived early to walk a bit and try some street shooting. We left the next morning for the beach so I’m just getting around to editing a few shots.

I had a friend who worked for the Enoch Pratt Library system. I should have come mid-afternoon for some better light but made do with what was available.
I just looked at the menu for Abbey Burger and I’m going to be dining there someday soon.

I didn’t catch the name of this fashion shop being dresses aren’t on my list, but I found it unique to have them lined up outside for viewing.
Well, the day is getting away from me. Let me grab a shower and get some fresh shooting in because it’s a nice sunny day, so I can be even more behind on my editing. That is a nice problem to have though.
We spent the last few days in Ocean City Maryland and it was a great time. The trip was for the 27th annual Endless Summer Cruisin event. The weather was great and the place was rockin’. I sucked in enough high-octane fuel fumes for a year.
We had a place on the boardwalk on 15th Street so the morning parade for 2 mornings was great. I shot one from the balcony and another from the boards. We also hit the show at the Convention Center and the Inlet parking lot.
It was a real treat staying at a nice hotel on the oceanfront on the boardwalk. The offseason rates are nice and as I opened the slider to the balcony the sunrise yesterday morning, it made it seem cheap.
No ocean sunrise this morning. But it was sure nice yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley
Many miles were walked, and many miles were cruised. I had my favorite cherry ice cream soda from Dumsers on the way out of town today. Road all the way home with the top down enjoying the wonderful sunshine and temp of about 80 degrees.
The editing of the hundreds of images I took has just begun. Please don’t panic, I won’t bore you with tons of them in the next few days. I will however sprinkle some of my favorites in now and then. Lots of them are works of art to me.
The show is full of customs and muscle cars/trucks. So I was a little out of place driving around in a Miata but I don’t care, I had a great time.
I’m a Camaro guy myself. I once owned a 74 that was very nice. Photo by Mike Hartley
I guess I should get my feet on the ground and get motoring again. I’ve finished cooking the bacon, on my second blog post of the morning and am about to do a little carving. I also sent some photos of the weekend with the boys to each of them.
This was a comfortable position this weekend. Photo by Mike Hartley
It’s going to be a great day. Prepping for a few photo projects this weekend. Having dinner with my Daughter today which is something we haven’t had a chance to do together in a while. It’s something we used to do every school year but got out of sync for a bit. We are both kind of giddy about it.
Lots to do between now and then though. So let me step away again.

Poor education will help you make poor decisions.
Hoping my furnace holds out another year. Seasonal check is next week.
Get your seafood now before it’s out of season and not as fresh.
Is there such a thing as a free day? I was thinking I had one today, but that was short-lived. I worked on a couple of important letters this morning to my granddaughter and an old friend. One was fun and the other a little difficult.
We are trying to navigate our way around political differences and I’m trying to get him to leave politics out of it but with limited success. Such is life.
Some of my plans were put on hold due to the body not cooperating. So I spent the afternoon editing and writing along with some planning. I charged the batteries, did some reading and finally fought off the headache.

I saw a good question the other day that got me thinking. Where do I feel most centered and happy? And the answer is my basement office.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Living with the beauty of Florida means risking losing everything. Nice place to visit, wouldn’t want to live there.
I love the smell of cinnamon buns in the morning.
I’m excited about the coming college basketball season and the University of Maryland’s team.

When I took typing in high school (yes it was a class) I didn’t realize it would be one of the most important skills I would use.
Still a good month for crabs in Maryland. These guys were out working the Bay early one morning this past weekend.

I hope to spend a little more time across the bridge before the year is out.
The sun has set on one beautiful weekend and we’re off to a good start this week. The weather looks great, we have some wonderful plans and life is good.
I got away this past weekend, with two of my best friends and we had a fine time. We ate well and sprinkled in a few activities like boating and skeet shooting at a great farm on the eastern shore. We watched sunsets and ships go by and had a lot of fun.

Today is full of chores, vaccinations, car detailing, shotgun cleaning, mowing, and then the Miata Club meeting late this afternoon. Retirement life isn’t bad.
I’ve got a few hundred photos to edit, some writing ideas, and oh yeah, I got to write and send a letter to my granddaughter. Good thing I finally got a good night’s sleep last night. That string of 4-5 hours a night wasn’t right.
Random Thoughts of the Day
A weekend without TV. That is nice. Might have to expand that.
People have different ideas of commitments.
Water is both beautiful and intimidating at the same time.
A few years back we were wandering around Indianapolis and looking for places to eat. I thought of how ironic it would be to start at the Rock Bottom Restaurant but we moved on.
A sunny weekend ahead. Get outside or out of town but get out. Photo by Mike Hartley
I used the title “Why Not” because I’m going to start asking myself that more often. Can’t fret about what the future holds, just have to go for it now. I’ve got to get the child’s curiosity back. Maybe a little more sense of adventure. Getting out and about more.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Either I have the world’s busiest mole out front or his entire family has moved in.
Sweet Emotion is a great tune from Aerosmith. It just happened to be the first song of the day. Sad to think we won’t hear Steven Tyler sing again. I
I’ve got to find the strap to the leaf blower because it hurts my back without it.
As one of my best friends says “It’s time to turn it up this weekend” and we have the perfect weather for it.
Welcome to October. The transition month as I think of it. Some warm days but cooler nights and then towards the end of the month that chill begins to take hold. Must be those damn pumpkins.
I’ve got 3 months to complete a lot of things and start even more. The first day of the month was devoted to our grandson though. His parents were lucky enough to be able to attend the Orioles playoff game with their best friends.

They were telling us its the first time they have been out together alone without their children in almost 2 years. So glad they could do that and they all are big fans. We see our grandson fairly often but at this age he seems to add new words to his vocabulary every day. And its a lot of fun trying to figure out what he is saying because its a language all his own at times.
I also got to spend some time with my favorite pet. My sons oldest dog. Pets are here for such a short time. They give so much love and become such a part of a family.
The second day of the month has a doctors appointment and some chores but hopefully a little shooting in the county and maybe some carving this morning and drawing this evening. And maybe I’ll sneak in another post or two.
Random Thoughts of the Morning
Someone needs to explain why the summer goes by so fast.
If you see people dancing in the street today it’s because it finally stopped raining.
Feeling the urge to rearrange the basement.
I’m moved to make a donation to the Red Cross this morning.
The week is progressing nicely so far. The haircut and doctor’s appointments are complete. I prepped the basement for studio shooting this evening.
Looks like a rocky road ahead. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’ll put in a few hours this morning for photo editing printing and uploading. The home team, the Baltimore Orioles playoffs start and I’ll have to catch a few minutes of that. Also continuing some images of image capturing equipment I have several thoughts on compositions.
Hopefully, this will be the last day of wet weather. I’m pretty tired of it right now.
Random Thoughts of the Day
As the first line in the song says – I can feel it in the air tonight, Oh Lord
Time for an early morning stroll, on the treadmill.
Flu shot down, Covid and RSV to go.
Accomplishments start to pile on more accomplishments.
I can’t wait to ride a bike on the boardwalk this month.
The schedule this week looks nonstop, with multiple tasks and appointments each day. Of course, I’ve mixed in a little fun to go along with the responsibilities.
I hope to be nonstop in producing new work this week.
The political ads seem to be nonstop now.
Time moves on nonstop, doesn’t it?
I like non-stop flights when I fly.
Oh and the assault of pumpkin spice and other pumpkin things are nonstop at every farm and store.
The sun took a minute to shine on these the other day. Photo by Mike Hartley
Maybe is an interesting word. Reminds me of an old friend who says he’s 50/50 on attending at times and never shows. I think I’ll eliminate maybe from my vocabulary. I don’t like the word because it lacks any commitment.
I got lazy this afternoon and took a nap. So I’ll make up for that by getting busy tonight. I’ve got over half of a family shoot yesterday edited and printed. I’ll finish that up tonight.
Tiss the season. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’ve got some medical forms to fill out for tomorrow’s appointments. I’d like to put a few miles on the treadmill and I’ll accomplish that while catching a few minutes of MNF. After that back to work on uploading images to my photo site.
This ugly weather is starting to get to me. But I will power through. More of it is to come.
This past week has been a turning point for me. I’m exercising each day now. I’m more focused and producing more each day than I was. I feel better because I’m accomplishing more.
This week I need to challenge myself to shoot more. This reminds me I need to charge the batteries for both. It’s been a long time since I’ve ventured out with low batteries but if I hadn’t just remembered I could have been in that situation tomorrow.
I hope everyone had a beautiful weekend.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I heard my granddaughter liked the letter I sent her. Made my day. Working on my next one.
Looking forward to seeing if I can top this last week with this coming one.
Short-term disappointments can be overcome. Not so much for the long-term ones.
I was going to the car show in Maple Lawn today but it’s still wet. I did go out and dry my ride off and hopefully, I’ll take a ride later today if that sun decides to come out. I guess I shouldn’t speak ill of the sun. It does provide us with important aspects of life.

I feel conflicted about people, and how to proceed in certain areas. I feel conflicted about what to work on today.
I guess I should just go do something and get on with life.
I still get excited about Fridays. Must be all those years of work and getting to Friday was the reward. As is normal now I’m off on Fridays. So a few weeks ago we stopped by Berlin Maryland on a warm Friday. A little town only 8 miles from Ocean City MD that we like to stop in on our way home.
We stayed at the building below, Hotel Atlantic, and spent 2 days there a few years back. Two active glassworks shops in town always pique my interest. I’m sure we will return there and stay again.

We have sampled several eateries in town and have been very happy. I love small towns in Maryland. Always so friendly and welcoming both from the merchants and locals.

It certainly has its history being incorporated as a town in 1868. If you are down this way on the first Saturday in August you should stop by for the Peach Festival.

Friday Full Discloser – I had the camera bag packed. I even had a gift card for the local BBQ spot. I stepped to the front door and noticed the rain. I paused. I took a step off the porch onto a patch of nuts that had dropped from the oak trees in front. I skated for a second till traction was regained took another step and went to my knees in pain.
I figured that was enough and if I took another slip or fall I’d be horizontal the rest of the weekend. So discretion was the better part of valor. I’ll find something to photograph inside today.
Random Thoughts of the Day
They tell me pain is relative. I feel like mine is one who moved in and won’t leave.
Now that my granddaughter has started kindergarten I’ve started to mail her letters now that I’m not seeing her as often.
I like seeing someone’s face when they get a print of a photo I’ve shot and they like it.
I’ve tipped my hand far too often in life. But I’ve learned.
It’s Here—that nasty stretch of wet weather for a week and more. I can only hope being 4 days into it that the forecasters are wrong wrong wrong. To those down south, the best of luck and safety regarding that hurricane.
In some ways I kind of like the rain. I’m getting a ton of work done in writing, photo editing, uploading, and organizing. I ventured out yesterday when it stopped for a few hours and saw a few friends. I hate taking the cover off the car and using it in this weather but I have no choice.
And what do they say about driving through standing water? Photo by Mike Hartley
As we approach the end of September I’m trying my hardest not to get depressed. I won’t be wandering around in shorts and flip-flops because temperatures will be cooling.
Oddly enough I’m tempted to go out in the rain today to get some foul weather shots. Looks like it’s going to be pretty wet all day.
It’s been an excellent week as far as exercise. I’ve been lifting and on the treadmill every day. Trying to make that a regular habit now in addition to working on all my hobbies each day.
Working hard brings a lot of gratification. However, I always had difficulty finding a good balance between working hard and overworking. And in recent months I was beginning to feel I wasn’t making the best use of time. This week I mentioned I’m trying a new mindset and trying to be much more productive with my time.
And it’s working out without overdoing it. So far I’m finding that sweet spot. Being very satisfied with the day’s work at the day’s end.
I was doing some editing I ran by this shot from earlier this year. It reminded me of that early morning. A few hours before sunrise I was wandering the back streets of Ocean City Maryland in February when I walked by this about a half hour before daylight.
It was both cold and mostly deserted. I ran across this mural and a partial piece of another one in front of it on a sidestreet downtown lit by dim streetlights. It’s not the best photo but it reminds me to work early and often because I have never seen it all.
And for my lazy butt to carry a tripod when out at this hour.
Getting out at various times of day and night is a great way to see things from different perspectives. I think this looks quite different during the day. Maybe I’ll get out early Thursday morning and see what I can capture around home. Opportunity awaits.
Feeling It. The “It” being my age. I’m in better shape than I’ve been in for at least 2 decades. The trouble is I sometimes pay a price for physical activity. Not all the time but often enough it makes me want to cut back. I don’t push myself hard each day and never when I’m already in pain.
I’m conflicted because sometimes the exercise leaves me feeling better. And I know it’s good for my overall health. I guess I have to work on techniques and the proper exercises and listen to my body a little better.
Some days I’m as bright and flexible as these flowers. Other days I’m like that stone they are encased in. Right now stone is winning.

I’ll give it another go later after some more treadmill time. I should wait till the system can replace the 4 tubes of blood they siphoned from me and work out later.
Maybe I should have started with the core instead of with the extremities.
Random Thoughts of the Day
It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it. Even with one that isn’t 100% anymore.
Not much dry outside today so we are moving into the store. I was hoping to do some shooting today but it’s cold and damp. So I’ll switch to inside activities.

I finished editing the shots from Harpers Ferry yesterday and uploaded them to a portfolio on my photo site. All 48 images can be found HERE. Just select the slideshow box in the upper right if you want to go through the larger images.
It’s amazing what a full day’s work can accomplish. I kicked ass yesterday and hopefully can top it today. Got some important backups done and migrated a boatload of data. Several hours of editing and writing were accomplished.
Today isn’t free of obligations but there’s a lot of time to get work accomplished. But I’m switching back to carving and photo editing so I’ll be back here later this afternoon.
One of the many wonderful cars from the Maryland Miata Club. I’ve missed a few monthly events but won’t miss the October meeting. I enjoy these events and meeting fellow drivers.
I have a newer model but I love all the body styles since its introduction in 1989. Photo by Mike Hartley
There are several parts of the club I haven’t gotten into yet but there is time. Such as Spirited drives, Autocross, and actual local race tracks. Of course I’ll need some modifications like a roll bar if I want to do that. There is also the monthly meet and swap meet.
This weekend (weather permitting) the group is going to a local car show in Maple Lawn. I hope to be part of the club that rolls in together.
A morning full of meaningful correspondences. Some important backups of data were completed. I’ve finished editing a full day of shooting from Harpers Ferry. The office has been picked up a bit and a workout is mostly complete except for some treadmill time.
I’m also planning a good night’s rest after some football and writing time.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Fall and I are off to a poor start. Cold and rainy is not my idea of a good Monday.
Who is fact-checking AI ?
It’s been a very productive day so that new mindset is working so far.
Thinking is good. Thinking about the right things is better.
Every day of every job I’ve had for half a century has been filled with deadlines. I kind of turned them all off after retirement earlier this year. I’m starting to incorporate some again.
It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it. Even with one that isn’t 100% anymore.
A shadow crossed our path the other day. Live and love as much as you can as often as you can.

I had some plans this weekend but I didn’t feel like going out much. My mind is elsewhere. It was a good morning for some yard work yesterday and I continued that till mid-afternoon when we took a break and went to Brusters for ice cream.
I detailed the engine bay in the go-cart for a bit. Still looks new 8 years later. I covered the car because of the storms last night.
Looks pretty gloomy out so far this morning. Hopefully, some improvement in the weather will be seen later on. So till then, I’ll make a lot of progress indoors.
Random Thoughts of the Day
The less TV watched, the better the quality of life.
There isn’t a time of day that I can’t be tempted by a bowl of ice cream.
The truth is out there. Pretty easy to find and see on most days.
I love waking up to the sounds of birds chirping and singing.
So I read today is the first day of fall. I guess that thunderstorm that rolled by this morning and knocked my power out was summer saying goodbye.

I’m not ready for fall. I want more rides with the top down and warm sun on my arms. I want my warm nights. But I’ll make do with what I’m dealt.
I cut the backyard yesterday. It was looking pristine at sunset. This morning it is leaf-covered again, and that nonsense is just starting. I’m not ready for the increased darkness. Or the holiday season or perish the thought, of being cold again.
So as the saying goes, it’s time to improvise, adapt, and overcome.
Maybe some of you are too young to remember but people used to wave to acknowledge someone letting them merge. A quick raise of the hand to signal thank you. I still do it most of the time. Always when traffic is heavy.
But I rarely see it being used now. I remember it being the rule instead of the exception but times change. So we don’t acknowledge each other now. No big deal, I can live without it but that won’t stop me from raising my hand in thanks.
The slowest common denominator. Photo by Mike Hartley
I would also encourage the use of turn signals but I believe manufactures no longer install those either from the looks of things.
To the 350 Z and the VW who slowed in the 3rd and 4th lanes of the beltway to 30mph to race today in the late afternoon, may Karma visit you soon. If you want to race get out in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere.
Well enough road talk. I spent over 3 hours on the road today so I’m ready for some seat time in my office without the threat of idiots.
What a great morning! Feeling good and ready for a full day of fun and creativity. I’ve got a good plan working already. It’s looking like the prime weather days for shooting are today and Monday if I want sun.
It’s also a good day to move the workbench outside and increase my carving skills. I’ve got 3 pieces I need to put the final touches on and another block of wood that demands my attention.
There is a small car show near Westminster today for a cancer benefit and I’m thinking of heading up that way.

Then again a few minutes in the hammock sounds like a winner also. I got in it for about 30 minutes yesterday and it was very relaxing looking at the wonderful blue sky and the leaves blowing at the treetops.
I should start thinking about a road trip for the week. We have been talking about Harpers Ferry or DC.
But first, making the best use of today. So let me get up from this seat and to work.
Daylight is fading away faster and faster. My favorite season slips away each day now. The end of summer would trigger depression but I’m in a different place now being retired. Pass stresses have or continue to disappate.

So the end of another Saturday is at hand. I think I’ll get an early start tomorrow. I wasted too much time today.
I’m heading out today and letting the car take me to the spot I get out and photograph. I sense it will head west. Sometimes I like heading out without direction or an assignment in mind. To be truthful, most of the time I head out without direction or assignment.
While out I might try a series of low-angle shots or reflections or focus on certain colors, lines, or objects. Sometimes seasonal or architectural. I never head out with the intention of shooting (photographing) people but I’m enjoying it more lately.
Given what goes on in this country shooting means guns usually which is sad because even as a young photographer I heard professionals refer to things as shoots, did you get that shot or I’m heading out shooting for a few hours in town.
I only took two shots on the pier on a day at the ocean earlier this month, the other I used of two birds a few days back. I think I like this one better. Photo by Mike Hartley
I hope to make the last quarter of the year something special. Not that it hasn’t been a great year so far. One of the best in my life. But in terms of finishing some projects and getting a great start on others.
I’ve got a head start reorganizing my workroom and purging things to create more floor space so I’m not moving something all the time.
I’m going to try to fight my normal instincts to hibernate this winter. Yes, this is your pre-warning that I will be complaining about the cold again. I can make it through fall but the negative waves will begin in December.
Holidays will be special not working them for the first time in ages. I know I’ve worked the last dozen Thanksgiving mornings where I got off at 6 or 7 am and would have to be up in a few hours to shower to start greeting family or head to a family member’s home.
Pretty much the same for Christmas and New Year’s holidays. A highly overlooked aspect of the job that wasn’t the only one that felt it. Lots of crews didn’t have the option of not being staffed 365 or 366 if it’s a leap year.
Let me get back to a few chores before I rinse off the ride. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I’ll try to share the day’s shooting later on.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I like cheese bread.
I realized I’ve been slacking on sharing random thoughts.
Popsicles are a good sweet treat that doesn’t put on a ton of calories.
I don’t know who misses it more. My dad not being able to see me growing up and old or me not seeing him.
If summer stretches into late September and October I have no problem with that.
The number of deer is getting out of control again. Or is it the number of people?
Fridays come along much faster now that I’m retired. And that is fine with me. I love early starts to the day and I got one today.
I’m a little limited on time today so new shooting might be at a premium. I noticed the work crew along Bethany Lane early this morning developing the few remaining inches of the county. I imagine that work along Rt 99 from Bethany to the Firehouse will break ground soon—more traffic, not my idea of rural living.

It’s kind of an overcast day so far. Maybe some sun later and hopefully a quick ride when my car is completed at the shop.
Ah, that date, September 11th. I believe the term is “never forget.” And I won’t for a few reasons. The date was always significant because it was my mother’s birthday. And of course the tragedy of what that day now means 23 years after the event.
Both of those events bring tears to my eyes. I miss my mother dearly and that day and the following weeks and months at work are burned into my memory from 2001.

I spent some time yesterday thinking about her and those families who had such tragic losses. People take such little time to reflect on history now that I fear we act without perspective.
My parent’s generation, who experienced the Great Depression, World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam are gone or going soon. Now it seems 9/11 is just becoming another day. How many pause, listen to some of the reading of the names by family members, or just reflect for a few minutes?
I looked at the spot where I used to pick Mom up from work yesterday. I thought about looking through the window at her in the composing/makeup room of the newspaper. I thought about the Thanksgiving meal she used to prepare and many other good and loving memories.
Reflecting is good. Even if they are difficult memories. I think I’ll take a ride by the home I grew up in today. Don’t forget good people.
I was going to post this last night but it was an emotionally draining day and I fell asleep shortly after 8pm.
I stopped by Ellicott City yesterday for a walk and a few photos. It was hard to park the car on such a nice day. You can’t beat a convertible on a sunny day in the low 80s.
Hopefully, this is the first day of many where I try to capture what is special about this area.

I should have reached the door and said hello to this longtime merchant. It has to be a few decades there. Kind of got me thinking about one for my office when we redo the basement in the future.

I didn’t remember shooting this wall art below from this angle so I went up a small incline and pointed through a fence.
Now I know why I like this art. It’s the red convertible. Photo by Mike Hartley
I can always find something in bloom in this old town.
There is a lot more attention to the floral part of the town now. Photo by Mike Hartley
This is an easy place to shoot. Finding beauty here is fairly easy.

This probably doesn’t need any more promotion because it’s always packed. But it might be something I go downtown for again. It’s been a few years since I’ve been to the last one. The Main Street Music Festival is coming on Sept 21.

I still feel at home in this town over 5 decades after I first started working here. Well, it’s time to put a bow on this post and think about where in the county I’m going shooting today.

I’m finding it hard to measure progress in retirement. But I hesitate to bring structure to my hobbies and fun fearing it might take some overall enjoyment and relaxation from them.
It’s easy to see progress on carvings, as I make prints and post to the blog or work on some writing projects. But at the same time, I wonder if I can do more if I add some old work techniques.
I enjoy being able to switch up working on various interests throughout the day. If I hit a writer’s block I pick up the Dremel tool. If I get tired of being covered in dust I shower put the top down on the car visit a local city and do some photography.

Of course that’s between chores and doing things with my better half. So progress seems to be made on many fronts by outward appearances.
I think about progress because I feel a strange sense of urgency to do as much as I can each day. Because it’s both fun, and rewarding, and the list of ideas and things I’d like to accomplish is very long.
So today I’ll be working into the wee hours of the morning hoping to stumble upon something that makes me smile.
Not feeling 100% this morning. More like a piece of toast that has been in a bit too long. Such is life after the first Monday Night Football game. A treat I haven’t had in over a decade because I always worked Monday nights.
I’m taking strides to turn that around that crispy feeling and they are working already. Some exercise and challenges to get the mind kicking on all cylinders.
I’ve got to notch a few chores before any fun but they won’t take but a few hours.
After that, I’ll go out to wash and detail the ride and put a few miles on it with the top down and maybe my better half as the seat cover on the passenger side. And then out again tonight for some night photography.
I’m not worried, I plan on making a lot out of this day. Have a good morning all.
Sometimes beach traffic on Rt 50 looks different on weekdays than on the weekends. I was behind this farm train coming through Easton last Thursday morning on our way to the beach.
I’m pretty sure my car can drive under that. But I’m too old to play fast and furious. Photo by Mike Hartley
The drive to the shore has always been an enjoyable one during weekdays. No traffic jams and people are not in a hurry. We get to stop at our favorite (Wrights Market) a chance to say hello and enjoy the sights of the many farms being tended.
The scene below is what I see when I’ve spent a day at the beach by myself and I’m about to head home for the night. The Route 50 drawbridge leaving Ocean City. With the sign saying Sacramento California 3073 miles ahead. Luckily I only have about 150 miles at this point.

I’ve seen enough bumper-to-bumper on this road over the years so we travel at off times when we can.
As I noted earlier, Bike Week starts Wednesday 9/11 I believe in Ocean City. I used to love the ride to and from the beach and spending hours up and down Ocean Highway and up to Bethany and back. Please be safe and give each other some space. And have a grand time.
It’s bike week. Love the plates. Photo by Mike Hartley
A great week ahead with grandiose plans. Lots of things accomplished for a Monday already. Let me keep it going and ready another post. Have a safe evening.
When I say it’s Bike Week, I’m guessing this is what my granddaughter pictures. Photo by Mike Hartley
The weekend is about over, the rides are winding down like the sun is. The grilling is complete and consumed. There is a chill in the air already.
Big week at the beach coming up though. Bike Week and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate. Lots of bands and events it appears. I’ll be waiting till that is over before venturing down. I’ve done enough damage to my eardrums over the years without the roar of thousands of Harleys.
Tomorrow I’ll spend some seat time in the Miata with my better half. Not sure if a short ride or longer cruise is in order. I’ll come up with some suggestions tonight while mindlessly watching some football.
I think I’ll get that covered bridge tour map out and see how many of those we can do in a day sometime this fall.
I do know it’s going to be a week of good exercise. The mindset is right.
My better half and I went to the beach (Ocean City MD) for a day/night and spent some time in Berlin MD on the way home.
It’s funny that we thought about having the children and grandchildren with us like our family vacation several times that first day as we talked and lay on the beach. The kids playing in the sand or pool and laughing. It’s a lot of fun with them all.
But it’s also nice to get away ourselves.

This trip helped put some wind under our wings again. A change of scenery and feel. Away from the chores and responsibilities.
Sunset at the inlet. Photo by Mike Hartley
The sound of the waves and the warmth of the sand and sun. And despite the sunrise being completely obscured by clouds on Friday morning and a fine mist I still got a few miles in the shoes along the boardwalk and side streets.
A couple of good meals, and a restful night downtown. See you again soon sand and sun.
A destination on our travel list in the future. By train of course. After getting a look at traffic on a trip earlier this year to New York City, I will pass getting behind the wheel in this web of asphalt and concrete.

My better half is into travel and is busy planning. I’m more the homebody I guess. The little I have done this year is slowly changing my opinion though. Maybe I’m turning over a new leaf.
I’ve found an old list that has me excited about a few projects I’d never started or had forgotten about that sound quite tempting now. Along with a ton of photography goals, I have for the remainder of the week, so I had best be busy achieving them all.
I wonder if these are like snowflakes where no two are alike? Or are they all alike?
Wish upon a star. Photo by Mike Hartley
Stardom doesn’t appeal to me. Starry nights are wonderful. Star in your production of life. I never go to Starbucks. Not a huge Star Wars fan. My better half wants to see a star in a Broadway play. I have a unique connection to the Star-Tribune. I’m not a Cowboys fan so they can keep their Star.
Star in making it a better world. Create your own Star.
Miata is The Answer. See the license plate. Especially here today in central Maryland.

I was out tooling around a bit today. What a day for cruising with the top down. A cherry snowball from the Woodstock Snowball Stand on the way home, enjoying the view of the Howard County Conservancy grounds while turning my tongue red.
I’m thinking of a late-night ride but I have a ton of work ahead of me. So till tomorrow.
It was only 9 months ago that I retired. The contrast between where I was and where I am now both mentally and physically is oceans apart.
I’m more at peace and appreciate life instead of a ball of stress. Yesterday was a great example. Normally after preparing for family to come for a few days with my better half, cooking and playing with the kids/grandkids, having a full day of fun, food, and love, I’d have to go to work after helping finish clean up after dinner.
And when I say go to work, start around 6:30 or 7 pm and work till 6:30 or 7 am Monday which means I was up over 24 hours straight. That was my normal Sunday/Monday where I’d switch back to night shift mode for the last decade.
Ironically that was the least stressful thing about the job. But I’ll go there another day. I wish I could remember who said to me a few years ago “You will know when it’s time to go.” I had thought about working till at least mid-next year and probably beyond.
This holiday, just like the previous ones this year feels special. Again I’m not working holidays like I used to so I can enjoy them like many do. But as I have reminded people before, we have become so accustomed to having all the services available on holidays that the number of people working them is massive. Have some courtesy and thank them if possible.
There was something special I remember when I was young about holidays and Sundays when most businesses would be closed. Everyone had a chance to take a collective sigh. Not now though.

I still don’t sleep well yet but I’m working on it. At least I’m not up all night for someone else.
This is the place to be this weekend. Ocean City Boardwalk and Beach in the great state of Maryland. I loved the old homes that used to populate the boardwalk. Most are long past. Maybe next week or the week after I’ll take that drive to the shore.

Times change and so have I. Slept on the beach or in the car some nights in my teens and early 20s. But we went and had a good time, outdoor showers, nightclubs, subs, sand and sunburn.
Sometimes the day trips by myself feel like a throwback to those days. Of course, I’m in a car I know will make it there and back now. And I have the money not to go hungry or worry about cash enough for gas. I won’t have to sleep on the beach because I won’t be staying up all night.
But it’s still kind of a bare-bones trip when I go alone, a beach towel, change of clothes, flip flops, tennis shoes, music, and baseball cap.
I also like the luxury of staying at a nice hotel with my better half. Maybe later this year for that.
The leaves on the trees are looking tired. Some have even started to turn and fall already.
My favorite season is going to enter its last month soon.
The sun while strong is not in the sky as long anymore. Mornings start later and night comes earlier.
The heat is still strong during the days but the nights are beginning to cool.
The actions of my daughter preparing for teaching the coming school year.
The last real warm days at the beach before the cool of the offseason hits.
Traffic is on the increase, school is to begin, and then it gets insane.
I’m reminded on some cool mornings that ragtop season only has a few months to go and fewer opportunities in between.
After this month, cookouts just seem to have fewer people around you than during the summer.
The 2024 NOAA hurricane prediction was for 8-13 hurricanes this year. We have had 3. We still have 3 months to go in the season, but halfway, we are doing well.
On a positive note, the prime months for Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs are Sept-Nov. They are bigger, fuller, and usually cheaper. So I plan on getting some steamed in front of me a few times between now and then.
I’m trying to savor the last few days of this fine month.
Jeez, I used to bounce back quicker from being sick. I just don’t seem to have that ability any longer. I hear that comes with age. Maybe I’ll be able to sleep some tonight.
I’m looking forward to tomorrow, it’s got to be better than today.

Random Thoughts of the Day
My goal tomorrow is to be able to spend some time vertically.
I’m worried that people think there is a pill, lotion, or treatment for everything now on TV.
It disappoints me that Trump set foot in Arlington National Cemetery again. I’m guessing the 400+ Medal of Honor families buried there weren’t thrilled either.
Being under the weather is a good reminder to make the best of each day you’re not.
Because that is what we do in Maryland. We Cruz. It was such a part of my early life. And it is again now with retirement. I believe I’ll go for one this evening before sunset.
Cruising is something I just never outgrew. Photo by the guy in the reflection. You would think by now I would learn how to get out of the way.
I hope everyone is having a good day. Mine has been special again with a nephew’s son celebrating his first birthday. That means I got to see my kids and grandkids also which is a great way to end this week.
And I got lucky because I was being my usual observant self. On the way home I was coming down our street and saw something on the road. As I passed it I thought to myself that looked like a piece of leather. I stopped backed up and got out and it was a wallet. I looked at it and the license said it was my neighbor. He was very happy to get it back.
I dropped by the Rally for the Wreaths car show at Turf Valley supporting Wreaths Across America and Veterans Cemeteries in Maryland this morning to practice my car photography. I believe it was their 3rd annual show.

I really should have spent a few hours but chores at home were waiting. I like trying to find unique things at shows to shoot. Be it the beautiful lines on a car or things you don’t see on every car.

I like the friendliness at the rally. No matter which one I attend, I seem to meet the nicest people.

I was surprised to see this in the lower lot. They are going to need more room if they want to expand it. But weekend golfers are the priority I guess. It used to be in the upper lot if I remember correctly.
Well, time to cut the grass if the battery in the mower is taking a charge. Plus I didn’t want to use all the shots in one post. Have a great afternoon.
I’m feeling all tapped out this morning. Waiting to catch my second wind. Shot this photo below at the Yard House in NYC. Great food and my son said the beer was good.
Respect for the wet stuff. Sometimes we take our water supply for granted. This is one of the many natural resources that are under strain. Public infrastructures failing. Too much rain and not enough in others. Water quality is under question.
I think I’ll donate to preserving one of my favorite pieces of water. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is an organization one of my best friends enlightened me about.
I bet we could get water management down for the world if we weren’t spending so much on weapons trying to kill each other. Photo by Mike Hartley
I worry about my water supply. We are on a well. But there is a county dump up the road a few miles and that has always concerned me. I believe I’ll have it tested again. A friend of mine just put in a special filtration system on his well system. I’ll have to visit him and learn about this.
With the cool weather at night now the water temp is bound to start dipping in pools if not the ocean and bay. I see the Ocean City water temp was 74 degrees. Time to get there and get wet now unless you’re into chilly water.
I know one person who doesn’t mind it. My granddaughter, I might set up the sprinkler for her tomorrow. Because she is going to grace our house for the day and I can’t wait for that treat that is her smile and hugs. The laughs are just like a wonderful desert.
Serious thought – My grandson is 2 years old. So when I heard a 2-year-old was hit and killed by the boardwalk tram in Ocean City I haven’t been able to get that out of my mind. It was less than a month ago I was walking with him on that same boardwalk. The pain of that loss has to be unbearable for that family and my heart goes out to them.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Learning by doing. One of my favorite ways.
Sometimes I think I know people. And then I’m surprised.
I’m enjoying baseball more and more lately.
I knew this streaming stuff was going to get out of hand. I think I’ll start weaning myself away from watching sports and playing instead.
A little voice is sitting on my shoulder yelling ROAD TRIP!
My son and his wife have returned from a trip and are safe and sound at home again. My daughter returns to her teaching job today to start another new school year. My better half and I are home together again after a few days apart and away from our home.
So normalcy has returned to the family for a few moments. It can be taken or changed in a blink of an eye. I was so concerned about my son and daughter-in-law flying in during those storms yesterday. Any kind of travel is a risk. I was reminded of that driving around a large stretch of the Baltimore Beltway the last few days.
My better half and I had the opportunity to be with our 2-year-old grandson and two dogs for the last few days. I learned a few things. Their 2-year-old is fast. And he is solid. But he is also smart. Maybe more than I. The thing that I adore the most is his sweetness.
Such a natural compassion. Sharing and inquisitive. Devious and funny. Laughing, loveable, and lollipops. I loved it.
Those feet don’t stop moving. Photo by Mike Hartley
Looking forward to the next time we visit and play. He inspires me to create things for him. I do have to work on getting him to stop throwing things. But as my wiser better half reminds me, that’s what they do. Plus his parents are on the case already.
I’ve got to remember that more. I’m the grandparent and I have to let them be the parents. I guess that instinct kicks in. I also have to remember to let kids be kids.
I’m so thankful to have a family so close. We put effort into being together and supporting each other. Are we perfect, nope, but we all do our best.
Watching my grandchildren grow up has been so much fun and I know the coming years will be even better. I hope I can stay active and participate in physical activities with them.
Growing up I never envisioned such joy from having my own family. I never dreamed of it being my premier accomplishment in life. I didn’t know the importance of appreciating it along the way because it passed by so quickly.
So today I savor. I take pictures to freeze these moments in time. I put marks on the doorframe of these grandkids growing taller. I try to teach them new things. And I always try to make them laugh.
About 48 hours of wetness to get through then I can take the cover off and cruise again. Summer is getting away from me and I have to make good use of the remaining warm weather. I’m sure this Chevy SSR owner feels the same way as I saw them cruising The Avenue in White Marsh on a beautiful Friday.

The fun machine was waxed the other day so it looks like this coming Tuesday will be the day I get to give the interior and wheels/rims some attention.
I still find joy in detailing my ride. Yes, I’m sure some professionals could do it better but I can live with the job I do fine. Plus I’m not shelling out a few hundred dollars to have it done.
But I’m no longer a mechanic. Not that I couldn’t learn and get back into it, but I’d rather leave that to the pros and enjoy the upgrades while driving.
Well, enough about the 4-wheel enjoyment.
Random Thoughts of the Morning
The wonderful smell of bacon never gets old to me.
Learning woodworking is a dusty experience.
This is looking like a week full of opportunities.
My ice cream addition is surfacing again.
Time to enter the production zone while the weather sucks.
I know I am. Now I just need to add one to my car. I’ve been looking for weeks and I just need to decide and order one.

Good day all, and what a beautiful one it is. I’m feeling all kinds of good vibes this day. Maybe it’s just the music pumping through the speakers but it’s something stronger than that.
Could it be that peace and contentment are settling in this old body of nervous energy? Wow, that would be a change. Probably a much-needed one for me.
A cool start to the morning which is nice because it warmed quickly. Time to get some sun in the next few days because it looks a bit cloudy this weekend.
Sleep will be easy this evening. A 2-year-old grandson has sapped the energy reserves.
The morning dew and moisture have cleared. I’ve accomplished a few creative things and knocked out a few chores. A great afternoon ahead and some new images to download later is the hope.
Moisture on my Miata. Photo by Mike Hartley
The ride is waxed, which is very good exercise. I kept hearing “wax on, wax off” in an Asian accent behind me. The tires and rims will get a good polishing this evening.
The sun is out and the temps are in the low 80s. Once I shower and freshen up and head out to fill up. Till later today.

Someone is having a very bad case of crowd envy.
Funny how a few seconds can change the perspective of days.
Don’t let someone else define another person for you. Make up your mind yourself.
You’re here. And you’re not here.

The county fair has come and gone and I didn’t get there. Bummer. I was sick the first few days of it, when feeling better the weather sucked and the last day when it cleared we had other plans. But I think I’m going to propose going to the State Fair this year to my better half.
This ride is from OC MD but the State Fair is bound to be loaded. Photo by Mike Hartley
I need to get some more people shots this summer. And fairs and the ocean are fine spots for them. Did I say ocean? Must be time to be heading east again till I hit water and drive no further. More on that thought soon. I hope to make at least one trip for each of the next 3 months.
Some seat time in the convertible in the summer is therapeutic. That bookends time on the beach and some photography. I’m looking forward to a day by myself. Just some music, my thoughts, sun, sand, and the cameras.
Of course, I’ll stop at a few favorite haunts for refreshments and grub. But it’s usually a very good mental reset day.
Good night to the Olympics – I shot a few things around Montreal on one visit. Maybe I’ll get to a live one someday. LA in 4 years, who knows?

Random Thoughts of the Day
The sunset last night was beautiful. Looks like someone put it on repeat for tonight.
I so enjoyed the Olympics this year from Paris. By all appearances and reviews a great job France.
Made some juicy grilled chicken this evening. Nothing like a warm summer evening and the grill.
Use what works for you. If it brings a smile, go with it.
Mondays make me smile now. So does every other day of the week.
Yesterday my daily streak of 246 days was broken. I heard a pop around 3 am and looked where the clock should be telling me the time but darkness was there. I didn’t get power back till this morning from the storm that came through. About 30 hours of outage time. Yes, I have a generator but I’ve been under the weather this week so till this morning the thought of getting it outside and fired up wasn’t in the cards.
Plus I need to build a dry spot for it, especially in the downpours we were getting. That is another project before winter hits.
The sun was up but with the gloom and doom outside there was little light. Photo by Mike Hartley
Good ole BG&E got the power on within 10 minutes of me getting home with the filled gas can for the generator. If I had known it was that simple I would have gone for gas yesterday. I saw a neighbor out yesterday morning and he was on his way out to pick up a new generator because his just bit the dust. Therefore he said the power should be on just before he got back. He was wrong.
No recliner action yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley
I thought about doing a post through that app on the phone but I could barely see that and I needed it because my better half, daughter, and granddaughter were away and I was using the phone for its intended purpose being communication.
Did that streak matter, yes it did because it’s another unit of measure I use to be consistent. But I’m not upset that it broke, life happens. I worked being creative yesterday and that is the streak every day I most cherish. I reorganized my bookcase, took photos, put a few new lines in a pastel piece, wrote on a pad of paper ideas for future posts, and did a few other tasks.
The pen and paper on the arm of the chair replaced my computer screens. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’m getting slack and I’m going to have to tighten up. Too much time passing by without the tangible results I’d like to see. No better time than the present to get going. I hope the power stays on, I’d like to get some work done.
Ironically one of the first songs on this evening was the Eric Clapton “Let It Rain” cover by Peter Frampton and the Doobie Brothers which seemed so appropriate. Along with the tornado and flood warnings for tonight. The thing that I don’t like is that this is coming from the southeast and our trees are used to storms coming from the west and northwest.
I did have some time to learn more about the various cuts and bits with the Dremel tool. I’m learning to take my time. Started another dolphin carving for my granddaughter.
Time to get back to work, it’s eerily calm outside with the rumble of thunder around.
I’ve cranked out about 50 prints so far and hope to do another 50 before taking a break.
Be safe, be dry, and try not to drive through this stuff.

Anytime I hear the song Aqualung by Jethro Tull I have a flashback to sleeping out overnight in the Capital Center parking lot for the box office to open for tickets for about 20 of our friends.
Make plans, and follow through with them, that’s living.
I’m sad I won’t hear Stephen Tyler sing again as recently announced. And sadder when I hear a Tom Petty song knowing he is gone.
The camera batteries are charged, time to put them to use.
Sick days. It began yesterday and it’s been brutal today and tonight. Hoping to get in the grove again tomorrow. I just wanted to preserve my daily streak.
Storms look like they will be training over the homestead in a bit so it’s time to hunker down. Time to clean up after a day out in the yard. Well, not the whole day but a good bit of it.

I’ve knocked out a hundred prints today and hope to get another big stack done this evening. I haven’t touched the Dremel tool today but maybe I can correct that oversight also.
Things I forgot to say this week –
It was great seeing our prisoners released.
My daughter and son made time for me this week, what a treat, thanks, guys.
Worried about a few things so not hitting the highs I had planned. That early morning cruise didn’t materialize, the heat impeded my outdoor progress and any thought about playing outside.
Days like today make me think about looking at a watercraft like this. Photo by Mike Hartley
But I’m making good progress on a few tasks like vacation printing and some woodworking. I have to find a place for the stereo and speakers I just hooked up and tested.
I’m getting a shooting map together for the next trip to the shore. I have a list I didn’t work much on while on the family vacation.

I hear thunder. This reminds me to check that generator this weekend.
Feeling good about the progress today.
Junk food is so good. Only in moderation so says a distant voice.
Contentment is the nice feeling while you’re working on something, not when it’s done.
We were recalling the days of no air conditioning for our kids last week. It’s just the way it was back then. Apartments didn’t have it. Our first home (which was new in 1961) had no AC. I guess it was into the 70s before we had the money for a room AC unit. That went in Mom’s room.
I remember sleeping in the basement because it was a few degrees cooler at times. Some nights just not sleeping. I guess that is where I just kind of adapted to the warm weather. Now it’s my friend. Gym shorts and hat.
Our first few cars didn’t have AC. And even when I did have it in my 2nd car I didn’t use it. I drove for 10 years without AC back and forth 100 miles to DC.
Practicing for Sunday. Photo by Mike Hartley
That doesn’t count the years I spent on the bike in summers. There are no tops or AC on motorcycles.
I still do to this day with the top down at every opportunity I get. Even today in central Maryland when it’s in the mid to upper 90s I’ll have it down.
I can imagine the total meltdown of society if the AC went out. My suggestion to the masses is, to get used to it because it’s getting hotter and hotter.
For instance yesterday I saw almost every other convertible with the top up and AC running. Whimps, they are. I love summer and the warmth.
Time for me to get outside and work on the tan and yard. Be well all.
Most all my sunrises at the beach last week were muted or nonexistent. There were 2 that were nice but the nights were clearer than the days but there were some storms also at night. One of the cloudiest and wettest weeks I can remember.
Last Thursday’s sunrise at the beach, reminded me of this morning at home. Minus the beach. Photo by Mike Hartley
No problem though, a good time was had and grandchildren are endless entertainment. Even when watching them nap. But what a scene when they are up and at’em. One of the movies that was playing that week was the original Ghostbusters. I started calling my grandson Gozer The Destructor. The destroyer of sand castles.
I don’t know how people are unhappy at the beach unless a hurricane is coming through.

I will be returning to the ocean, in August for a day trip or two of photography, fun, and relaxation. Mostly photography. There are several spots I would like to try that I haven’t shot from before.
It was good to get away, I feel kind of recharged and creative again. And now back at home base with both computers being exercised, the cameras snapping, and the printer humming along we are ending the month on a strong note.
Physically I’m doing more daily with the treadmill and weights, I just need to keep it up. And the combination of mixing both computer time and exercise seems to be beneficial. I used to keep them separate.
Random Thoughts of the Day
It’s one thing having strangers and delivery vehicles speeding down your dead-end street. It’s another when neighbors do it.
I got out of sorts for a few days. Not looking at all the opportunities I had.
My granddaughter is itching to get over and put a new height mark on the doorway of her age.
On the other hand, I feel like I’m getting shorter.

It’s one of those late July days that if you aren’t in the water it’s tough outside. I was washing the car earlier and that felt good till I was finished. I wish I was back at the beach or in a pool.
Instead, I’m inland and stuck on dry surfaces like these beached horseshoe crabs. So, we make the best of it. Maybe a grandchild will roll by and squirt me with the hose. The word is more heat but with rain this week so I guess it’s the best of both worlds. I know we could use the rain here.

Grilling out soon and then maybe I’ll get the hammock out and lay in the shade before sunset a bit. Sundays are great.
I’m back from a wonderful week at the beach with the family. All are home safe and sound and life is good. I ate well and still lost 3 lbs. Guess that walking helped. And I didn’t overdo it with sweets and junk even though that was tempting.
Worked on my tan, my tickling abilities with the grandchildren, and a chance to talk to my children who haven’t been kids for some time but will always be “the children.”
We did the annual trip to Ocean City Maryland. Stayed at a condo that had a beautiful view of the Isle of Wright Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from a 6th-floor wraparound porch.
With children and grandchildren meeting us there last Saturday afternoon till pulling in the driveway this afternoon, it brought a smile to my face many times, and now as I sit here.
It feels so fortunate to have those moments. And I captured a ton of them but now its time to print. That will keep me busy most of the evening.

I hope to return soon to the beach in my convertible and capture some more images of the town, people having fun, and surrounding nature.
What are your future travel plans? – Interesting ask by the Daily writing prompt.
We have never traveled extensively. Either money, time, or priorities kept us fairly local. But now retired, we have some time. Still a little limited on resources but we will make the best of it and do some traveling.
My better half has always wanted to go to Ireland so that is on the bucket list.
I’m more into seeing the United States. To me, it has so many wonders and things I’m interested in like it’s National Parks and significant locations. For instance, we hope to visit New York City and see the 9/11 Memorial and other famous sights in the city this year.
We both like the idea of going to San Francisco.

So far this year we have been concentrating on local jaunts. We are going into DC for a few days and hit the monuments and museums next. After working there for many years it will be nice to go down for something else.
Another spot my better half has wanted to visit is Charleston South Carolina and I’d like to see Myrtle Beach.
Maybe further south to see Key West someday and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio. And while I’m there take in the NFL Hall of Fame.
I could go on because I have an extensive list for retirement but of course resources and health will dictate a lot of it. But getting out of the house and experiencing the world is finally an opportunity I hope we are fortunate enough to experience.
What would you change about modern society? – The Daily writing prompt asks.
Attitudes. I hear lots of complaining but few are willing to step up and do anything about it. Or the complaints are so trivial that it just indicates a spoiled society. The negative voices that existed in relative silence have been given a megaphone with social media. The bitchiness has been magnified while the good that goes on gets less attention.
Dependence on technology. This one is going to bite us in the ass one day. A minor example of it this week happened.
We have gotten STUPID and dumbed everything down. My example, I heard the other day. Car manuals in the 60s contained how to adjust your valves on the engine. Today they say don’t drink the windshield washer or battery fluids.
Manners, Respect, and Compassion – Someone forgot to teach many children this over the years. Even many adults seem to be forgetting these keys to a great society.
We have gotten entirely too greedy – Money and status symbols seem to be the only things a lot of people are interested in.
Trust seems to have gone out the window. And that is because there is a small segment of society that will take that away and we don’t do anything about those people.
Everything is disposable and that is a problem. We have forgotten how to take care of our planet.

I could go on but it’s time for fun. Have a good day all.
