Firing out

Some feel the need, the need for speed. Not me, I’m cruising into the week. A good friend described his Monday and Tuesday as cramming a week into those two days. I’m so glad I don’t have to put the pedal to the metal like that.

This sucker was loud and fast. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not that I’m slacking, I’m just going at my pace. I have grand goals for the week, but possible jury duty awaits.

I’ve gotten off to a good start on the computer but I’m going to switch gears to keep my grandchild entertained and work on her creative skills. She loves her drawing room. And I love drawing with her.

Have a great morning all.

Ready, set, read

I’ve gotten into reading more lately. My better half just got me a book from the library that I need to motor through.

So, I guess I should pull up a fence like this couple and get started.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Thanks to my better half, my children and grandchildren for making this a great Father’s Day.
  • I feel like I should say a lot of important things soon.
  • Tomorrow I teach art class. I’m also a student.
  • Summer is getting packed.
  • I no longer feel any guilt in taking a nap. Just took a very long time to accomplish that feat.

Airport congestion

This getting old stuff is filled with challenges. Today I have a couple aches conspiring against me, but that isn’t going to stop me.

I have a quick errand for a friend this morning and then lunch with my daughter. A couple of home things to attend to, but I hope I can focus on getting some work on my hobbies and read the book a friend recommended for my back. If it’s a good one, I’ll be raving about it here in the future.

As a father I’m thankful for 2 great kids. I’m thankful they are healthy, hardworking, smart, and loving parents themselves now. I’m glad they are better than me. They up the bar on my proud meter all the time.

I try to tell them I love them every chance I get. I write them often and we call and see each other when we can. I’ve busted my gut for them, and they are very appreciative of the efforts. It’s tough being a dad. I’ve taken the blame for stuff, I’ve always wished I could have provided more.

I probably/know of a few habits they could do without. I could relax a bit and I think chew quieter for my son. Hey, I enjoy my food.

Being a father has shown me rewards I didn’t know I had possible growing up. It’s also caused my beard to go grey before it’s time.

One of the many things I’m very proud of is how my children look out for each other. I’ve seen many families fractured but I believe these two will always be close, supportive and there for each other.

A good Father’s Day is waking up feeling confident that your children are happy in life.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel the need, the need for sand.
  • To all the fathers busting their behinds and making the effort every day, happy Father’s Day.
  • Being older is learning about adapting at the time in life when we are least adaptable.
  • I wonder what percentage of people say, “thank you Siri”?

Ready for the evening

Feeling like I wasted the day. There is an evening to salvage it though. So lets see if I can get something accomplished before midnight.

I can’t wait till I’m looking out over the water again. Be it sunrise or sunset.

Last of the sun

I know flowers like the rain. And there is a good bit coming. But they also like the sun. It started to get a bit overcast as I was finishing up outside. So, like them I was just soaking up the last few minutes of sunshine.

We went out to dinner at Ledo Pizza and then to the Snowball stand for a treat before the rain started. As I sit here yawning, I know it won’t be a late night. But then again, there is a baseball and basketball game I would like to see.

Brightening up my afternoon. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s been a good week and I’m looking forward to the weekend. I do have to get out and get some new images regardless of the weather. That just might be my focus. How do people handle the rain.

I guess I could capture some scary car video of people attempting to drive on wet roadways. They can’t do it in dry conditions, so you are guaranteed some good footage. That would be too easy though. I’ll have to see what I can come up with.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • With the rain I sense a creative streak at the easel coming this weekend.
  • It’s been a good year. But the best is yet to come.
  • I really have to finish a project for my granddaughter.
  • This is one unique neighborhood.

Smoking hot

Ah that first 90 degree day of the year. Kind of late I’m thinking for this area. I spent most of the day power washing and cleaning yesterday. A good physical workout.

I didn’t get a chance to take the go-cart for a spin while the sun was up but today is another chance. All I need to do is grab the keys and go. It will be the last warm day for a bit.

But first another round of power washing. Today is the back siding, gutters and walls. Oh, another section of sidewalk and steps also. Then that unit is put away till I take it to my son’s home and help him with his deck. It’s a training mission so when I get too old, he can come do my home.

I thought I’d brighten up the mid afternoon with a little color before I head back outside to swelter in the heat. So here is a shot from St Michaels Maryland of Simpatico Italian goods.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A beautiful moon out this week.
  • One of these years I’ll start using sunscreen.
  • I’ve got to increase my level of exercise.
  • Seeing a rainy forecast doesn’t leave me smiling.

Doors from Easton

As I was doing some street photography in Easton Maryland I mixed in a few shots of some doors for this Thursday Doors post.

Easton

We spent late afternoon and early evening in Easton Maryland last week. As we wandered down the streets which was mostly rolled up for a Thursday night except for the restaurants and a few stores, I thought I’d practice some Street Photography for an hour before dinner.

Easton is a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, in the heart of Talbot County.

In 2023 there were 17,225 people living there. Two of them are my friends from many decades ago.

I like it because it has a lot of things art related.

It’s an easy town to walk also.

I have yet to sample all the great eating establishments there. The few I have tried have been great.

Lots of shops for my better half to look at while I photograph.

Lots of county office buildings from the past and some quite new.

I’m not much for city life but I could see this town growing on me.

I find it to be a very friendly place.

Also a very patriotic town.

Bricks or a gate everywhere you look.

Frederick Douglass / Liberty below.

I have to stop walking and shooting at the same time.

We will make a return trip this summer or fall and maybe stay at the Tidewater Inn below.

Well, too many photos. Hey, there is no such thing as too many pictures. So one last one.

Maybe another post after the games tonight. If not, have a great evening.

Call it a day

I was out working in the yard wishing I was looking at this view in Ocean City Maryland. I will be soon again, but not today. I am working on my tan as I tend to chores.

From the inlet looking north. Photo by Mike Hartley

But like any smart senior, I’m pacing myself with a break in front of this box. And one can’t forget the trips to the kitchen to make sure the fridge is still working, and the ice cream isn’t melting.

The clock keeps turning like these wheels in the wind. Photo by Mike Hartley

After some weeding, leaf blower action, deck maintenance and raking. I’m about done for the day. I’ve aggravated the nerve in my neck and I’m paying for that now and maybe into the evening.

Such is life, I’ll adapt and move onto something that won’t irritate it. Have a good evening.

Envy

Actually, I envy this man. Living in a small town and having the ease of riding around on one of these bikes. Caught him on the streets of Easton Maryland late afternoon.

Easy Rider. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve always liked the eastern shore of Maryland but I’m falling more and more in love with it. And this summer it will be a common destination for the Miata and I to cruise and explore.

Envy is something I don’t spend a lot of time on, but I can’t say I’m without it at moments in my life. I try to stay busy appreciating all I have and building on that.

Usually, it’s just a moment. About 10 minutes before I saw this rider above, I passed this Vette parked on the street. Of course, I paused because I love automobiles. It’s a convertible, 2 seater, sporty and handles well along with some get up and go. So right up my alley.

I have to add a garage before I’d get one of these. Photo by Mike Hartley

Nice but I don’t need the tickets and attention. Nor do I want to risk the high speed runs I’d have to feel it do. I can probably buy 3 of my Miata’s for the price of this one. And so far, that fun machine with the manual transmission has satisfied my motoring needs.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I had a great evening with some friends. And one fixed great Rueben sandwiches for dinner. Nice way to start a week.
  • Warning – Idiots at the helm. See RFK Jr. for instance.
  • I have a lot of productive ideas. Now I’ll have to see if I have a lot of productive follow-through today.
  • I opened the work shed earlier than usual today. I’m coming for you Mother Nature.
  • I’ve seen my buddy “Box Turtle” more in the last few weeks than in the last year or two. I wish he would make an appearance when the grandkids are here.

Direction of the Day

I’m off to an early start and being productive this day. I thought this was a good photo to lead off a Monday with. I wish the wind vane and plane direction were a little more aligned, but it was close. I shot it in Easton Maryland last Thursday.

The plane has found the tailwind. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve been experiencing issues all morning with my Verizon Fios TV signal. I’m going to give them a call in a moment to get a tech out again. Since the upgrade, there’s been several issues.

It’s too wet to cut grass so that will have to wait another hour. Which puts a smile on my face because I will have some more time to create.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The wildlife around my home seems to have increased this year. I guess they find us nature friendly.
  • Feeling bad about one sick grandchild. Feeling good about a picture of the other 2 looking cute on a Monday morning.
  • Funny how things come full cycle. As with most older people, I take meds daily and it’s never been an issue. But lately I’ve been getting a few caught going down. Usually, the first one. Then I laughed and remembered what I would tell my mother. Take a good sip of fluid first to wet the tunnel. Been easier since that.
  • Suddenly, I have a deadline for something.

No time like now

A fairly productive day but why stop now with 3 hours to go. I’ll knock out some editing tonight and work on making some prints for several projects. Just installed some better lighting in the workroom so that hopefully it will help with my design skills or show me my errors earlier.

From the inlet to uptown, I love it all. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was great getting to the beach for a few days this week. And the perfect weather we had was a nice stroke of luck. I’m pretty sure there is going to be another day this month where the forecast is perfect, and I’ll be pulling out well before sunrise so I can spend the day soaking up the sun and environment.

Maybe sit down and pick some crabs, enjoy an ice cream soda, cruise the town and photograph the day away.

We are beginning to sail into summer. Photo by Mike Hartley

But till that day comes I should get back to some local photography, so I’ll head out tomorrow for some new images.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My first grandchild will be completing kindergarten soon. Excitement for her because of how she looks at learning and made many friends. Papa is so proud, and a bit shaken by how fast that time went from holding her as an infant.
  • The importance of something depends on your perspective.
  • Sports used to be inspiring to me. And it is at times still. But the gambling focus and ads are killing it for me. I’m not sure it’s done the fans any favors and I’m guessing the players feel a lot less safe now. I find that sad. I think I’ll try to catch a little league game this week at the local park.
  • I should make a schedule for the week.

The good life

What are the most important things needed to live a good life? – A nice question for a Sunday from the daily writing prompt.

I would start with health obviously. Without that most other things are difficult to enjoy. Next would be love. Having children and grandchildren has been a nice touch. Some important work or passion. Maybe fortunate enough to live in a nice climate or go to one. Good and plentiful food.

Great friends that bring laughter and support, while you give back the same and more. The ability and desire to learn.

Live a long time and have nothing but great memories to reflect on in your final days or moments that leave a smile on your face.

Never owned a boat, but being on one is the good life. As long as it stays afloat. Photo by Mike Hartley

Turning your back on me

People will turn their backs on you. But Mother Nature? That is a problem. Hopefully I’ll be on her better side today.

I’m behind you all the way, keep on blooming. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • What was supposed to be a casual day turned into a quite busy Saturday. Good thing Sunday is a day of rest
  • Choices some make cost them far more than sums of money.
  • This week has filled me with creative thoughts. Now I just have to turn them into actions.
  • Instead of “are we not entertained.” I’m asking. “aren’t we paying any attention?”

Home again

We took a few days away from home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland this week. Some beautiful weather, beautiful sights, great food, restful evenings and worked on my tan in the sand.

No problem working in mid 70s temps. Photo by Mike Hartley

Much has changed and much has stayed the same in my favorite beach town. I wasn’t in town but a few minutes when I saw a new sign going up. And I really like the message.

By the time we walked to the end of the boardwalk, stopped for a snack, the installation was complete on the way back for this shot.

Like the sign says. Plus it’s a Friday. Photo by Mike Hartley

Life is good but the yard needs cutting. Oh, it’s raining, what a shame. I guess that chore will be moved to Saturday or Sunday weather depending.

But first downloading some more of the shooting I did last night and today in Easton and St. Michaels Maryland.

On second thought, I think I’ll go finish the second half of that shrimp salad sandwich and pretend I’m feeling that cool ocean breeze.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve discovered I shouldn’t go shopping alone for the grandchildren. I would overbuy.
  • I’m loving this feud between Musk and Trump.
  • I wish we could put out a sign that says, “this state is full.” Traffic is out of control.
  • My daughter got me a sign for my office. “The only B.S. I need in my life is: BEACH & SUNSHINE” – I love it.

Life can be hard

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A clean desk means I ran into a creative block.
  • If you want batshit crazy, tune in Truth Social.
  • I was one day early changing one calendar and 2 days late changing another. Proof I’m never on the same page.
  • Random thoughts flow like water when I’m relaxed. I guess I haven’t been in a while.

Peaceful and Stressful

The rains came Friday evening and this Saturday morning had that fresh smell to it.

Droplets. Photo by Mike Hartley

The pressure was on to finish something important Saturday. But first I had a little fun with the family. We had an afternoon together and a great lunch from Bare Bones. The grandchildren played, the children took turns taking care of the mobile ones while we took turns holding the baby.

What a special time in life. It’s just a marvel to feel those little fingers squeeze mine.

So just after they left to return home, I sat down to work on a speech about 5pm, and the power went out from the high winds we were having. 5 hours later it’s restored and I was back to work.

It’s going to be a long night.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When you visit your loved ones resting place, it’s both calming and upsetting.
  • I’ve got to take a picture of Cheetos in a taco shell.
  • There is a limit to stress. It’s called the breaking point.
  • I’m not going to celebrate till it’s here, but I see some warmer weather headed out way later this week.

The contrast of mother nature

Overnight rains were so quiet they weren’t heard.

Morning mist and fog, and the sun trying to break through and burn it off.

But transitioning back into a very stormy evening ahead with a flood watch and 40 mph gusts. Mother Nature always has her own schedule and plans.

Be safe out there if you’re kicking off your weekend this evening.

And no, this old guy hasn’t been overdosing on the Weather Channel. I’m just into Mother Nature.

Entree

These weekly challenges roll around too quickly. I’m just too busy in between, that is the problem. Again, I apologize for having to dip into my vault of old photos again for this week;s Thursday Doors.

I’ve heard of this

When I was young there was a phrase when you lost a race badly. It was “Getting your doors blown off.” I guess this race was a little closer because they are still attached.

I’ve never owned a yellow car. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve never owned a yellow car. I’ve owned a white one, a blue one, a green one, a black one, a red one, a gold one, a maroon one, a grey one and even one with stripes.

Enough about cars tonight. I’ve got a long evening of writing and printing ahead. Maybe catch a few minutes of NBA playoff ball and then hopefully a few hours sleep. That has been difficult to come by till complete exhaustion sets in and then its still broken.

Where’s my heat

Memorial Day weekend and temps in the 60s and low 70s making one think of early spring, not the brink of summer. I still got outside in shorts but having to put on a sweatsuit jacket for the morning errands isn’t right.

Pain became an issue this weekend. I started off in poor spirits mentally also but changed that. I fired up the grill, saw the children and grandchildren for a short bit.

And here it is midweek and the temps in the low 50s today and rain are not my idea for the end of May. Unfortunately, the pain is still a companion. Time to make that orthopedic appointment.

I need sun to work on my tan and loosen up this tightly wound body. I need some sand for a bed. I hope next week looks better because this one is a wash.

Winds and Sand. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m frustrated that I haven’t been interacting with other bloggers more often. Time has been flying by and consumed by many other priorities. Some planned, some not. Like making a speech soon and having little time to prepare.

Trying to work through issues from Friday through this morning with TV, Internet and phone because Verizon wanted to change hardware. They resolved the phone issue when the tech showed up today quickly on the outside connection.

I’ve been so busy and tired that I’ve slacked on my blogging and photography. I’ll have to work harder to get back into the swing again.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Today I think about the loss of my mother 14 years ago. Time does not heal all wounds.
  • Pardons for sale. See 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
  • I’m glad I didn’t have to teach my kids how to push a car downhill and hop in and pop the clutch to get it started.
  • I can use pain creatively if it’s in the past. I struggle with it in the present.

A simple day

Simple life is a lot of fun. I know a lot of people who have a lot more and they don’t seem happier than I am. I’m sure there might be some, but the more I see people have the more their focus is away from what is important in life.

I was going to get busy with the actual housekeeping by vacuuming the basement and maybe purging a few things but instead did some cleanup on the computers.

Verizon is here upgrading the hardware in my home. So I’m using the phone as a hotspot to get some connectivity.

Photos by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I see it’s National Photo Month. I’m just late to the party. Guess I should get my behind in gear.
  • Being retired can still be a lot of work.
  • Someone in Falkenstein Germany has taken a great interest in this blog. I notice because I have so few steady visitors and a few new ones from time to time. So hundreds of views in a day or two stand out.
  • Lots of people celebrate surviving cancer. That is a fine thing. But being a cancer survivor, I think the real brave ones are the ones that didn’t survived the surgeries and treatments and suffering.
  • Trump and his cronies are idiots and incompitent F**Ks. Just my opinion. While I still have a right to it.

Spin it up

The holiday weekend is upon us. Some may have already started early. In retirement, every day is a holiday. I’m getting things cranked up to enjoy a long weekend with all my working family and friends I have that will need the long break.

Turbocharged weekend. Photo by Mike Hartley

We began strong Thursday night with a 4 hour Happy Hour at one of my best friends home. The rain will clear out the next 4 days before the next monsoon season moves in. So, I just put the hammock outside, took the cover off the car. Now to figure out what to grill out the next few nights.

If I’m lucky I’ll knock out a majority of chores today and have the weekend to relax and enjoy.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It better start feeling like summer soon. It’s not like I want my winter attitude issues creeping into May
  • I have to make June meaningful.
  • That is NOT – one big beautiful bill. It’s a big piece of crap.
  • I love my home and yard. But its a strange neighborhood.

Mixed Doors

Good morning and welcome to Thursday Doors. For a change of pace, I’m posting on the day this challenge was meant for. I’m trying to accomplish more and if I let less slide, I get more done.

Life and poor weather got in the way of shooting some new images so I’m using up some old photos that I hadn’t posted in this before.

As always, thanks to the creator of ThursdayDoors and please follow the link to Dan’s site for far more talented posts.

Up or Down

Looks can be deceiving. Is this flowing downhill towards me or downhill away from me. For a minute I had to remember where I shot this. The water is actually flowing towards me.

Rocky Gap State Park. Photo by Mike Hartley

Kind of wondering which way this day will go in terms of direction. I’ve got a blood draw, but otherwise pretty much a free day. I’ll have to come up with a few photo assignments for myself.

First light. Sometimes this low light displays a deeper color. Like watching a sunrise before it breaks the horizon. Sometimes those are the most wonderful colors.

They look softer in this light. Photo by Mike Hartley

And then there is the full sun. I hope to soak up some rays today because the sun will pull a disappearing act for the next few days I’m told.

These Rhododendrons used to be one of my moms favorites. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Temps in the 40s in late May in unacceptable. It’s ruining my morning vibe.
  • Utilize the tools you have and build more tools.
  • I feel I’m the only one not in a hurry some days.
  • Had our first solicitor come to the door since I put up the No Soliciting sign. Good thing I was asleep because I would have asked why I would buy something from someone who can’t READ and point to the sign. The ironic thing is that the same guy saw me outside later in the morning and I saw him coming into the driveway and I said, “no thank you” and he turned around, not knowing my better half already told him no already. Good thing I didn’t know that or politeness would have been left behind. Because at that point he can’t read or hear so he’s cruisin for a bruisin on that little hoverboard he was riding.

Seat time

Cleaned off the ride and went for a short cruise. Lots of people beat me to the end of Henryton Road so I just snapped a shot or two exiting and then driving around the west side of Ellicott City.

I never thought of myself as what some photogs call ambulance chasers. But when I come upon a scene, I’ll get a shot if I can. This was along Route 40 westbound before Turf Valley. As sergeant Shultz would say “I know nothing” other than what I captured. A wrecked SUV on a flatbed, a school bus and lots of officers.

I hope they didn’t hit the school bus. Photo by Mike Hartley

As usual I waited too long to get out and before I knew it the song on the stereo was reminding me of what I needed to do – Get Back – home.

Good day

I was an early bird this morning. Rising well before dawn which was fine with me. I like getting an early start. But 3:15am was a bit extreme. Maybe a nap in the hammock I just put out this afternoon.

We have lots of Robins, an many more birds. Photo by Mike Hartley

The car is the first project this morning. Another coat of pollen to be removed. I hope to take it for a cruise today. Some back roads but also to the local ice cream shop for a treat.

I should do oil and filter changes on the mowers. I should do a lot of other things on the to do list, but I spent most of the weekend doing that so maybe a little fun today.

I’m feeling inspired, maybe I’ll sit at the easel for a bit and see what my mind can draw.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When you retire, Monday isn’t such a bad day after all.
  • I hope there is more sun than clouds today.
  • The number of people not being able to stay in their lane on the highways is staggering.
  • I think it’s a good day to take a break from the news.

Here’s looking at you kid

This summer I’ll be working on my automotive photography in addition to the nature, street and whatever else it is I can capture. I’ve always had a passion for cars. Mostly driving them but appreciating their beauty has also been satisfying.

Nice eyes. Photo by Mike Hartley

Instead of the normal whole car shots I want to learn to capture the special design, color, modification and angle that defines a feeling.

Some of the colors available now are unique. Photo by Mike Hartley

I used to look at car magazines when I was younger quite a bit. But I’ll be dammed if I remember the special photo aspects that made shots great. So, I’ll have to keep practicing but look for others work and see how they are covering the same event. And how I can differentiate mine and keep it special.

The show at Mikey and Mel’s has a lot of variety. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’d certainly like to continue to get shots of the Maryland Miata Club meetings and give out prints. They seem to be very appreciated, and I like doing it.

Of course I’ll always be looking for light hearted messages from the motoring community. Warning though, they can be opinionated. Photo by Mike Hartley

Luckily for you guys the next few weekends won’t have time to hit any shows but June should be an active month.

Workout

Some go to the gym. I go out the door, open the shed and there is my gym equipment. I spent longer than I would like working outside yesterday. But that was then, there is more work to be done today. Today was leg day. Translation, mowing the lower back HILL.

This week we go back to working on arms when we get the pressure washer out.

But first, I’m going to fire up the grill and have a nice dinner.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This has been a cool May.
  • Smile, it avoids difficult questions.
  • I’ve been very tired lately.
  • I didn’t get to an important goal this morning.

Easy does it

My schedule is easing up a bit this coming week. Or at least I think it is, but life happens. Right now, there are only 2 appointments scheduled but I have to make a few more for estimates on some home repairs.

I hope to get outside more if this rainy weather clears out. I’m taking the cover off the car and giving it a bath because Sunday and Monday are supposed to be nice, and I’ll want to get out with the top down for some therapy sessions.

I haven’t spent a day on the water fishing in a while. And I’ve never fished here at Lake Habeeb. Reports of good largemouth bass. Photo by Mike Hartley

Part of this Saturday will be filled with yard chores. But I do hope to get out later and collect some new images to share.

Ah, there is it, I can see sunlight through the windows finally. So let me get away from this device and get this body moving.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s been feeling like the Amazon Rain Forest around here.
  • I’m working on a new and improved version of me each day. Well, most days.
  • I love getting older. I’m not so in love with the side effects.
  • Scheduling medical stuff is sometimes more painful than the appointment.
  • I have two errands to run this weekend. The Snowball Stand and Bruster’s Ice Cream stand.

Door time again

Found a few old ones to share for Thursday Doors. From grey to some color. I was going to do some shooting today, but it cleared up and my son took me to a ballgame with his son.

I’ll have some new work to share next week.

It has hinges, is it a qualifier? Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a good thing I have a small body of work to draw from once in a while for these challenges.

Another building from my favorite town, Ellicott City MD. Photo by Mike Hartley

Speaking of doors, I’ve got to call tomorrow for estimates on replacing both our front and screen entry doors. Frames and all.

I believe this was shot in the town of Havre de Grace MD. Photo by Mike Hartley

And thanks again to the creator of ThursdayDoors and the link to Dan’s site to explore the entry to greatness.

Short Trip

We took a short trip on Monday and returned Tuesday so I’m feeling a bit refreshed. The visit to the Rocky Gap resort was fun and relaxing. We hiked several miles along the Lakeside Loop Trail. We had some good steaks for dinner. We spent some time in the casino and came out only down $10. Normally we walk out winners but not this time.

The drive there was sunny and pleasant. The drive home, not so much.

It’s a beautiful place to stay. We had a room on the 4th floor overlooking the lake.

Hiking around the lake and that is what we did on Monday while the weather was nice. We lost the sun to the cloud’s midafternoon and the nice breeze we had at the start faded. I’m glad we are both healthy enough to get out and hike a little bit.

Good Tuesday morning

Some days are meant for this. Today is not one of them, here in Maryland.

Photos by Mike Hartley

I’m following up on that blue theme from yesterday. I wish it was a sunny day where the top could be down.

It’s going to be a busy day of editing. But that means I’ve done some shooting, so life is good. Catch you all later today. Lots of goals to accomplish.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve got to start writing my memories down.
  • I love sunshine when it comes through the window and cast a shadow next to you.
  • Some of the simplest photos of mine have great significance to me. I bet it’s that way for a lot of people.
  • I’d better get out of this computer chair and get some real work accomplished today.

Blue

The sky on Saturday was a beautiful clear shade of blue. Every once in a while I see a shade of blue here on earth that throws a challenge flag to the sky and says here I am. Clouds today and much of the week will obscure that bright blue that comes in spring on low humid days.

I bet lots of people can picture themselves behind the wheel in that. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m taking things a bit more relaxed this week.
  • Despite the coming rains, I hope to spend more time outside this week.
  • I lost my discipline and I put on a few pounds. I’m back on track and shedding that now.
  • Working on my education this week is a priority. But so are some fresh images.

Late day check in

A happy Mother’s Day to all. I’ve been busy celebrating with family today which means it’s been a great day. I haven’t even answered the daily writing prompt yet. I had better get back to work this evening. That day of playing with the loved ones set me back. But in the best of ways.

This truck was something. The paint job was beautiful. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s left me in great spirits. I got to hold my new granddaughter for a good while. I played with both my grandson and my oldest granddaughter, to give their parents a break.

I always want them to remember being here a great experience and I think we pull that off.

Let me get back to answering another writing prompt and then start on tomorrow’s plans and challenges.

Time for rest

At least this weekend we won’t have to worry about rain running off our feathers. It looks like there could be enough of that because my phone forecast says it will rain Monday through Saturday. Isn’t that sweet. It kind of rules out going to the beach.

There was a pond that I hadn’t seen before behind the parking lot where the car show was today. Stepped down and grabbed this shot. Photo by Mike Hartley

I will be too busy with appointments this week to consider it anyway. But the following week might be a different matter altogether.

I think I’ll crash early tonight. Been a full day and I can record the late NBA game and watch it early. I’m tired and sore. Also, kind of hungry so if I stay up, I’ll probably eat a bunch of junk. Plus, I want to wash my car at sunrise and take an early morning ride.

Have a great and safe Saturday night all.

Saturday Speed

Went to the car show at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn this morning. Met up with a very old friend from the neighborhood we grew up in. We also graduated together but lost touch after high school. We are both into cars and always have been.

Both of us really enjoyed the reunion and will be meeting together again. Oh, be forewarned, I have other car photos to share.

This guy was trying to mimic the color of the sky today. Photo by Mike Hartley

This was the only car at the meet that wasn’t showing any pollen on it.

My daughter’s favorite color. Photo by Mike Hartley

I saw a saying about kids the other day that made me think I haven’t lost the total child in me.

I don’t mean to interrupt people. I just randomly remember things and get excited.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling invigorated again.
  • How long can Fox News keep up the charade? Only time will tell.
  • Sun and a weekend, what more can we wish for.
  • The calm before the storm should be called not the storm.

Stones

No time to chat, I have to get out and mow. I’m not one of those retired people paying someone else to work on the homestead yet. I guess that day will come, but not this year.

I almost went right by this one when I noticed the stacking of stones. One an old bridge, one an art project.

Build it and they will come. Photo by Mike Hartley

Peaceful day

Along the Patapsco yesterday morning I came upon this green scene. I hope to take another walk along the Thru Trail and hopefully catch some wildlife tomorrow.

Today I have an acre of property that needs attention. I’m about 2/3 of the way through it and some other maintenance, but I think I’ll finish the rest tomorrow before that hike.

Things got green quickly. Photo by Mike Hartley

The grass was so long I had to cut in low gear. Boy, was it nice doing it on the rider again. That would have taken twice as long with the push mower. I do have to do the lower hill with the push, till I get that path to the lower back made.

I guess summer is on simmer because it certainly isn’t getting off to it’s usual early start here in central Maryland. Have a great evening.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Kids do the cutest things.
  • For being in a drought area, I’ve been cutting the grass fairly often.
  • I hope these trees are finished shedding soon.
  • Time to pull the cover off the fun machine.

A May Goal

I’ve got to get to the beach this month. And one of the spots I love to visit is the Dumser’s Dairyland Ice Cream Soda Fountain and Restaurant. I love their cheeseburgers and follow that with my favorite Cherry Ice Creams Soda.

This dining room is packed with families when the season gets rolling. We were there during the offseason, I still have to stop for ice cream. Photo by Mike Hartley

Another goal is to get back to shooting. I’ve been my own worst enemy and allowed things to interfere with that effort. I’ve done a little the past few days but it’s time to step it up. I also have to take one of my Nikons to Service Photo for a cleaning and checkup.

I think I’ll head out now for a couple shots in between the storms rolling through.

Goodbye drought

We were in a D2 severe drought level in central Maryland on the map I saw on May 1st. I’m not sure what it’s going to change too, but those rains yesterday and continuing wetness today and beyond will certainly move the needle.

So, balance is being restored. I’m usually not into rainy days but I’m trying to adapt and utilize them.

I did capture a few drops. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was highly unsuccessful in capturing some of that wind driven sheets of rain yesterday. That was impressive. My monopod was in the car, and I couldn’t hold the door and the camera steady at the same time because of the wind. Next time I’ll know to shoot from a window.

We did lose power for a few hours yesterday. I hope there won’t be any repeats today with more thunderstorms.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • There is a mess in this office waiting to be cleaned. This is where I need a staff.
  • I’d really like to get some prints made today. I just got the printer fired up and loaded with photo paper.
  • Feeling different recently. Some good and some bad. But that is the way things roll.
  • I’ve got more done this morning than a few others put together this week.

A Simple Saturday

I’ve had both a busy and lazy day. Wrapped it up with a nice dinner at Kelsey’s Restaurant and Irish Pub in the evening. Great Crab Toast app and Burger with coleslaw. We decided to go out when the power went out from the storms.

My better half’s parents used to dine there often. The place is growing on me. The booths are very nice, and service has always been great, like the food.

BG&E was working earlier in the week on the pole in the backyard and several of the electrical boxes along our street. I’m all for what they are doing because there are less outages and when we do have them, they have been corrected quickly.

This contraption crawled into my backyard to work on this utility pole. Photo by Mike Hartley

The trip to Home Depot on a Saturday wasn’t the smartest idea but we survived. They didn’t have one thing for the mower even though they carry John Deere products.

I did manage to squeeze off a few shots between the clouds, sun, and rain.

Photos by Mike Hartley

I’ve had a major setback. The mower I wanted to purchase won’t fit into my existing shed. And a new shed isn’t in the budget right now even though we need a bigger one anyway. I store a push mower and pressure washer inside because there is no room for them.

So. I guess I’m looking at fixing my old one for the time being, so I don’t have to push cut the whole yard. I’m so ready to be done with the issues with the old tractor. Step 1 is pulling the old dead battery out of it and find a replacement. Completed and it started.

Got the air and oil filter part # and I’ll be off to the store this morning for those and some oil. I hope it last another year till we can get a bigger shed.

I don’t have anything against these bees. But once they start drilling into my deck it’s another matter entirely. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel like I’m turning nocturnal again.
  • The only ink on this body is when my grandchildren draw on me.
  • He’s lied to you. He will continue to lie to you. Because that is all that one trick pony knows.
  • I went to a new dentist for the first time in almost 4 decades this week. I was pleased.

Green

I had a few minutes on the way home and stopped for a few shots yesterday and everything came up green.

Be it the freshly cut hay.

Or the green tractor cutting it.

Or the Corvette that road by.

Now the tree line is green again.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Got a call from someone reading my mind.
  • It’s going to be a good Thursday. I can feel it.
  • BG&E was messing with my power at 3am. I’m thinking they thought I wouldn’t notice.
  • I love a manual transmission.
  • Funny thing, I’m seeing some Trump signs disappear.

Road Trip in ?

In 4 days the Cruisin’ Ocean City event starts. There are two possible conflicts this week in the way of doing a day or two in town. The first is they moved the event up two weeks this year. And the long-range weather doesn’t look comfortable for my convertible. More like early spring temps with a chance of rain on the day I was going to drive down.

The second is we may have to be available to help a growing family. Again, the date changed and moved it closer to the birth of our granddaughter this week. And family is always a priority.

So, I may just have to look forward to the October event, my monthly club meeting and the local car shows till then. We will play it by ear as some say.

I wonder if the early date will affect attendance?

I had the charger

I had my phone charger. What I forgot was the PHONE. I was away for 4 days without my phone.

The experience was friggin great. My better half had hers and I was with her the whole time so it wasn’t like I was out of total communication, but I didn’t borrow it once except to take a few pictures.

It has inspired me to make another concerted effort to leave that thing alone. Life is not about my face in that for more than a few minutes a day. I’m going to try to make another effort to get the daily usage of that device to less than an hour. If I limit it to just text, calls and a few photos, it might just be a few minutes a day.

Actually, it allowed me to have a better time with my grandson because I had no distractions from that device to interrupt us. It’s so easy to get distracted from life with phones. Yes, it has use, but it’s so easy to abuse.

I spend enough time on the computer each day working on this blog, and other writing as well as some photo and design efforts. But those are my activities/passions. And I think I keep a good balance away from them and participating in real contacts or experiences.

Come to think of it. When did I make the transition from putting a few nickels, dimes or quarters into a phone to make a call. Or just a few dollars ($2-4) per month for a landline. I think I’ve been suckered.

Maybe I’ll install one of these and get back to living life. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There is a lot of beauty in the minutes before sunrise, just as there are after sunset.
  • I’m trying to figure out when I’m going to squeeze in some photography today.
  • Spring adds a soundtrack of nature that winter doesn’t provide. I love hearing the birds sing outside.
  • I hope it warms up quickly, I have a lot of outside work to do today.

Good Sunday morning

A Happy Easter morning to those celebrating. I’m looking forward to the day because family will gather and share some quality time together and a fine meal. And that is like a shot of energy and well being that I hope will carry me throughout the coming week.

Kind of a strange day for me, which I’ll explain tomorrow. I got an early start today because computer time is limited. Completed some yard work yesterday, so that is off the agenda for a few days. I’m going to give the body a rest from that activity.

Don’t eat too many sweets.

Carry out

Ah yes, back to finding dinner.

Ah, SUCCESS.

Nice

I liked this store window in Westminster MD. And it happens to be the name of this shoe business (Run Moore). I like this town. It has lots to photograph yet.

I’ve got to add a little color to my footwear. Photo by Mike Hartley

Okay, I’ve prioritized the day, and the chores will take the morning slot and the afternoon will be for some cruising and photography.

The car show is monthly, and I like that bright sun to work with and that ain’t happening today. There is another show next week (Howard Co. Sheriff’s Car Show April 26 9-2 Rain or Shine 6751 Columbia Gateway Dr  Columbia, Md) that I might check out. And there is a good chance I might take a day to drive to Ocean City in the beginning of May for that big event from the 1st to the 4th, so I’ll have many chances.

So, it’s off to the gas station to fill the 5 gallon can and get to mowing. I need the exercise and it’s not the humidity of summer, so I’ll be good to go.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Oh crap, I forgot it was Jazz appreciation month. I’ve got some catching up to do on music.
  • Excitement fills my heart. A new grandchild is near.
  • The battle with Mother Nature has started strong on both sides. She keeps putting them up and I keep knocking them down. I really hate those sticker bushes though. That is where she gets her revenge sometimes.

Not a bad Friday

This morning was a little cool, but it warmed nicely.

Took a hike with my brother in-law who is also retiring. I can see us doing these walks regularly in the future. Except in the dead of winter. This shot was about 13 years ago. We went over some rocks today but not like these.

We can walk a good distance, but gymnastics over trees and streams are limited. Photo by Mike Hartley

  • NBA Playoffs – The time of year they add defense to the game.
  • What a beautiful time of year.
  • I wouldn’t be paying for Aaron Rodgers salary next year if I owned an NFL team.
  • Got some good advice today.

Open Sesame

Crap, I missed the Thursday Doors day again. Good thing they have a flexible deadline. I haven’t gotten out to shoot some fresh Thursday Doors, so we have some things from my photo archive. I didn’t realize all the doors I get in shooting places various places.

That didn’t fit through that door on the right.

Practice

It’s car season again here in the Mid-Atlantic. I went to the Maryland Miata Club meeting on Monday and took the opportunity to practice some shooting. There is another big show at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn this Saturday, and if time allows, I’ll be there also.

So, buckle up and close that hood. It’s driving season again.

Time to spread your wings and escape the shadows.

Then roll out and hug the pavement.

Ready to breathe fire and hug the corners.

You might hear some AC/DC Back in Black.

So, take a number and take the top off and cruise.

Get a good grip on that wheel, lean back and hit the button.

Raise those tail feathers and put it in gear.

All photos by Mike Hartley

Next meeting I’ll just concentrate on body lines.

Tanked

My tank is full and ready to go. It would be nice to ride a bike again, but those days are probably behind me now. But my mind is ready today and regardless if the body wants to cooperate or not, I’m about to release the clutch.

I saw this beautiful color tank in Westminster Monday. Photo by Mike Hartley

I do have to squeeze in some chores for the yard and home, but the cameras will be out again today. It’s a bit cool and windy but I won’t let that deter me.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • There is a fine line between relaxing and laziness.
  • The clouds are moving faster than I am this morning.
  • 2 realities being spun is one too many.
  • Love regardless of the situation.
  • I know I shouldn’t cook that pack of bacon. But I can’t resist.

Monday is a wrap

I had the best lunch ever with my daughter today at one of our favorites, RockSalt Grille. And a lovely walk around the town of Westminster after that.

I couldn’t be prouder of my children. The talk was the best. It’s so rare we get the one-on-one time where it wasn’t rushed with one of us or both having to go somewhere, or she wasn’t tired from having worked all day.

East Main and Railroad Ave. in the heart of Westminster Maryland. Photo by Mike Hartley

Between this afternoon and the car meet I probably shot over 150 frames. The club meeting gave me a chance to practice my photography and meet some new people. Actually met 3 first timers. I just edited and posted 59 pictures I shot on our FaceBook group.

And no, the car below is not part of the Miata group. I was peeking between buildings and caught a glimpse of this and had to come around to see this work of art.

It probably needed a paint job anyway. I hope they didn’t use watercolor. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Tomorrow is more work than play, see I’m trying to bring balance to the universe.
  • I decided not to listen to one falsehood today. Feels pretty good.
  • The attic calls me tomorrow.
  • I didn’t get the cover on the car in time before the rain.
  • I can see tough times ahead. I guess it’s good we have some previous experience.

Barely keeping up

I took a break Saturday and laughed with friends and ate well (broiled crabcakes and fried oysters) while watching a scenic view. And though it was a misty, cloudy and very windy cold day in mid-April it was still a good break from the norm.

Sunday just a few chores and some good family time. I should have worked harder, but I have a few hours to try to finish the day strong.

Today is booked with great things for a Monday which makes it kind of a bonus.

No cropping, just a little zoom-zoom. I’m just starting to get busy with the Nikon P950.

Photos by Mike Hartley

I believe my friend who was looking up the ship positions on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday said this one was a car container ship. Probably had just dropped the load at the Port of Baltimore.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • It feels strange to like Mondays, but retirement put a new perspective on them.
  • Today I got back on my photography horse.
  • This is going to be a great week.
  • It still boggles my mind that RFK Jr was confirmed. And his policies continue that process.
  • Beautiful sunrise this morning at the ocean. Wish I was there.

Change

My dentist is retiring. This is not a good thing. I’ve been going to see him and his hygienist for decades. I do love going there also because it’s in my favorite little down right on Main Street. And I feel they took excellent care of my choppers. I’m not a fan of dentist/doctors, but these things made it a breeze.

Also, he is one of my favorite neighbors and has been for decades. So, a salute to my wonderful dentist Dr. Bob and his hygienist Dawn. Both have decided to retire and I’m very happy for each of them.

I believe in his post in FaceBook he indicated that he was the last of 6 dentists to occupy that same spot on Main Street in Ellicott City since 1900.

The green arch under the flag next to the Wine Bin is the entrance to DDS Robert Boman. Thanks again Bob.

Change 2

This getting old stuff isn’t going to be easy. They shell that carries around this twisted mind is feeling its age and in need of some maintenance and a change in style. I’m adjusting daily expectations and cutting back on how many hard physical things I do in a day.

No more working for hours straight or all day with just short breaks. I also need to slow the pace and be more deliberate. Slower down the stairs or hilly ground to reduce fall risks. To think before lifting something with the question, should I? Lots of little things that if I’m smart will allow me to keep upright and active.

At the same time, I’m going to increase my work on the things that are important to me. Speaking of which, I need to go charge another battery for today’s shooting.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Just saw another beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic from Ocean City. Too bad it was on a webcam. And it only lasted about 3 minutes before going behind clouds. But I SAW IT. Great way to start a day.
  • Try to make the best of life. That way when you get older the time you spend saying “I should have done this or that” will be at a minimum.
  • I hope the 3 days of rain we are going to get help solve this drought we have been in.
  • I was surprised by a friend’s news yesterday. It was a big decision for him. It probably is the right one for him.
  • Not getting all the sleep I need but I’m working on it.

Sure

Rolling down the boardwalk, soaking up rays, enjoying the sights. Yeah sure, I could do that. I enjoy riding as much as anyone. Spent a lot of time in a bike seat. Both pedal and motorized. From my own legs to 1100cc, I’ve always loved 2 wheels.

I only saw this one rider with the OC Ryderz. We didn’t rent bikes there on our last visit. I’d like to buy some and get a carrier for them. But having had surgery on both shoulders I think my days of hanging on to ape hangers are over.

For as much as I cruise this town when there I wonder if I could get membership for my Miata.

One of my friends had those ape hanger handlebars when we were young. Not for the faint of heart if you’re going to do any trail riding. Almost suicide, at least you won’t go over the handlebars, you will catch them and take the bike flipping over with you.

So I’ll be on the plain jane old man single speed bike with the nice cushioned seat. Ride safe regardless what you ride and where.

Good morning

I’m no food expert. I know what I like, and I like to eat. And food doesn’t move so it’s an easy target to photograph. The trouble is my own discipline. I see food and I eat it. So, my goal this year is to practice patience in eating, to capture some more food shots. And while doing that share some of our favorite spots.

Breakfast Favorites

Ah, I wish I was on my way to the ocean again. Because then I could stop at a little diner, we like on the way to the shore like we did last week. The Easton Diner is our go to stop. It has the old time feel, service and food are great and fast.

This was my bacon and cheese omelet. And yes, that is my unhealthy white toast with butter.

I think I’ll hit a local breakfast spot this week. My better half recently went to Cozy Cafe and Bakery on Main Street in Ellicott City and liked it a lot. But first I think I’ll hit an old spot just across the bridge called The Trolley Stop.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve kept a healthy weight most of my life. I did get sloppy for about 15 years though.
  • Up late for the game and up way early with the body complaining. I’ll pay for that later I suspect.
  • I can’t believe it’s below freezing this morning on April 8th. And with the wind it feels like 19 degrees. Way too cold for this time of year.
  • I’ve always wondered if my dad would be proud of me.
  • I never thought I’d have to think about becoming a prepper but some signs of society norms falling makes me wonder.

Wall Art

I looked to my right, while having dinner with my better half last week at Harpoon Hanna’s in Fenwick Island Delaware and saw this colorful display. I’ve always liked this restaurant. It was a great meal. I had a Fillet and Crab Cake. Treated myself.

I’m working on a much simpler wall piece for my side deck area that used to be a pool. I saw our neighbors across the street getting their pool and deck area redone. Pools can be a ton of work. Glad that is off my daily chore list.

Hope to make the best of a dreary weather week ahead. I’m going to have to cram some outdoor chores into the next two days because they are the only ones the sun will be out. It’s time for the first cut of the year. It’s going to be a tough one with the push mower so a trip to the tractor store is also going to be on the agenda.

I’ve also got to stop by a local mower repair shop and see he much they might give me for the old tractor.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Short sighted leadership equals long term pain.
  • Teams win championships.
  • Children make me forget about the children in authority now.
  • Grandchildren give the best surprise hugs.
  • RFK Jr going to the child who died of measles is a sad irony. I wonder how many more funerals he is willing to attend because there could be more on his hands.

Mug Shot

A semi productive Saturday. Had to pause earlier than I intended. One of those signals from the body that I pushed too hard. Enjoying some Final Four action. I had hoped to go out and enjoy it but taking it easy this evening and regaining my footing.

Truth be told I passed out before the second game started and I was up early Sunday morning watching the replay.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Some days your body reminds you of your real age.
  • Rainy days used to bother me. I guess the option of not having to go out in them is nice.
  • It looks like the people are starting to mobilize. I’m encouraged.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • A very cold start to the week ahead is not the forecast I was hoping for. So I better enjoy this weekend.
  • Grass grows; grass gets cut. Sounds so simple but it can be a lot of work.
  • Children should grow up learning interactions with animals. If not a pet, then at the zoo. Something magical happens in those meetings.
  • Kleenex season is upon some. Bless You.
  • I just learned one of my backup memory cards isn’t compatible with my newest camera. I might want to pick up a few now.

Any Door

I was slack again last week and didn’t post due to recovering from Covid. This week my better half and I took a sanity break at the beach for 2 days. So I’m a day late for the Thursday Doors but better late than never.

The doors were all a bland white, so I accented their surroundings. Photo by Mike Hartley

At least these are new shots that I didn’t have to crawl through my archive for.

I know, below isn’t the typical door but I saw it and couldn’t pass it up for inclusion here. A big Zero on style points. That red clashes with the camouflage.

Looking forward to your return Dan. Catch you next week. Thanks for leaving a placeholder.

Semi Back

We just returned last night from a few days at the beach. We haven’t been away this year and needed a break because it’s going to get boo-koo busy soon. What am I talking about, it’s been busy as hell so far this year.

Semi Back is a good title for my own back. Some days the spine and muscles work well, others it’s a pain. Another post or two are possible and that’s semi back into my blogging routine. I didn’t do much shooting while away so I should continue to pick up the cameras more today and get back in that grove.

The beach is one place we will always be back. Well, as long as that thin strip of land on Maryland’s eastern shore is there.

Offseason is a nice time of year we both love to be there. Almost

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I’m always proud of my children, but yesterday my daughter turned up my pride meter a whole lot.
  • When you don’t hear the truth, it’s hard to make good judgements.
  • Salt air is refreshing.
  • I wonder if we will get to watch a cult crumble.

Monday thoughts

Every once in a while, I get this smile on my face as I’m sitting here working. Especially on a Sunday night/Monday morning where that would be the start of my workweek. It’s been 15 months of retirement now and I’m still grinning ear to ear this morning thinking about not starting the work week for someone else.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m one busy SOB but it’s doing the things I like or working on my home and yard or things I make for my children or grandchildren. No more worrying about what Mr. Bezos is going to do or say or support.

Ending March on a high note. The music is rolling this morning, and I hope to keep it part of my whole day. The collection is big, and I’ll have no problem listening to different songs.

With the warm temps the last few days I find myself looking forward to summer and riding bikes with my better half.

Beach and Bikes go together. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was listening to an old group 38 Special and the song – Hold on Loosely – and I loved the following lyrics. A good reminder to me to not overwhelm my better half.

Just hold on loosely
But don’t let go
If you cling too tightly
You’re gonna lose control

Your baby needs someone to believe in
And a whole lot of space to breathe in

It’s so damn easy
When your feelings are such
To overprotect her
To love her too much

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I can’t remember the number of times I worked 24 hours straight. And not just when I was younger.
  • I can remember the days I worked 36-48 hours straight.
  • I probably averaged at least 60 hours a week for my career. And that is with vacations bringing the averages down.
  • Thinking back, I worked my behind off.

Keep on keeping on

Do you ever feel like unplugging? Until recently, I never really had that urge. I try to keep a balance and I’ve been pretty good at that. But the reason I’d like to unplug isn’t the use and joy I get from working online but the security aspects. I got a note today that one of the medical facilities I’ve used in the past had a data breach.

Unplugged. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll take the needed steps and try to protect myself as best possible. But the numbers working hard day and night against us stand a decent chance of wreaking havoc on honest people as far as I can see ahead.

Times have changed and you can’t really unplug.

Like that feeling when I give someone cash. I get this stunned look or even “we don’t take cash” reply.

Life has changed, I used to be able to see the thief coming.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m definitely seeing more classic cars riding around this area.
  • I gave myself a gift today. I didn’t watch or read one word of politics.
  • Sat on a bench with a couple of older couples eating ice cream this afternoon. And for me to say a couple of older couples that means there were a lot of old people sitting there.
  • Another grandchild on the way soon. I pause, gather my thoughts of anticipation, joy, wonder and happiness.
  • I gave myself a break from yard work today. I will pay for that tomorrow.

Saturday struggle

Finished washing the car and cleaning the rims, dusting off the interior and glass. That always makes me feel good. I started the day off in a funk. Just a lot to work out mentally. Isn’t that always the case though?

A nice ride this afternoon to split up some home/yard chores. Then another quick trip to pick up a prescription that turned into a 45 minute ride.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Good thing I retired, this grandparent business is a pretty busy role.
  • I’m not sure which is more colorful, spring or fall?
  • I do know which season doesn’t include mulch.
  • Taking away vaccines, that’s one way to trim the Social Security recipients.
  • I really try to be nice to everyone, tailgaters make it so difficult though.

On the edge

Friday mornings are sweet with a beautiful sunrise. On the other hand, the season for the Maryland basketball team came to an end last night at the hands of Florida. So, It was a great morning and afternoon because our grandson and son were visiting today.

I love having them over. It was a great day, and it keeps me from drifting into the rage the news brings about in me. I’ll relish in the things I taught him today. He saw a ladder I had out for pulling the final things from that attic.

I taught him about where to position and move his hands along it. How to use each leg and make sure you have a firm footing before going up more. And how to come down slowly and safely. Of course, his father panicked when I let him climb up and touch the ceiling. I had a hold of his body all the time of course.

He was grinning ear to ear. He also liked my snowball and the pizza and games and destroying the castles of Lincoln Logs I built. But he really got into the shredded paper pile I made him.

Tomorrow is going to be a fine one. I’ll be out at daybreak pulling the cover off the car and begin the bath. Then some detailing, maybe even a nice wax job. Armor All the tires and turn up the tunes.

Check the fluids, tire pressure and engine. HIT START, Reverse out of driveway. Shift, Smile, Sway, adjust volume, head bob to the tunes and become one with the car. Head west, seek some twisties.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The grass isn’t growing yet but I can hear it taunting me already.
  • Time to take a trip to York Automotive. Handling and ride height adjustments.
  • These big business leaders that backed Trump, like the auto barons are now seeing they backed the wrong horse. Good luck trying to educate bonehead about supply chain. And the nice thing is I’m not going to be buying a new car for some time so shove those price increases where the sun don’t shine.
  • I’ve come to realize that some of Maryland basketball fans are idiots. Booing Willard was a classless move yesterday. People who don’t think he can coach are idiots.
  • I’ve got me. Barely but we are hanging on.

Relaxing

Ship, sunrise, and surfers. Took this at Virginia Beach years ago and was just cleaning and had never noticed the Navy ship in the distance, just to the left of the sun before.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Would someone remind Spring that it’s Spring, because it certainly feels like winter this morning.
  • The Madness resumes this evening with the home team (Maryland) playing a #1 seeded Florida. Go Terps
  • I’m starting to be more satisfied at the end of each day.
  • Sleep was difficult again last night. A busy day ahead. Maybe a quick nap this afternoon.

I would pass by this a few times a night. I always liked it.

Good thing I can lose myself in my young grandson for a few hours this week to help me cope. And I’ll be absorbed in basketball this weekend. The trouble is I’ll worry about his and all our safety.

Our Day in MD

It’s Maryland Day – And being a longtime resident I’m going to celebrate. I was sick all weekend when events took place but hey, I’m feeling half human again and I don’t mind joining in late. I read the meaning of it and have put it at the bottom of this post.

But first I wanted to take a minute on what it’s meant to me.

I like the climate. I like the state flag. I like the mountains. I like the beaches and the Bay. I even like THE Bridge. I like the beautiful highways, on a warm summer night around 3-4am (the only time they aren’t jammed).

Ocean City Maryland Beach and Parasail

I like the states university. I’ve liked our Governors, both Republican and Democrat ones. I like the states importance on its natural resources. It’s education system, did okay with my generation and my children’s. And I’m hoping for my grandchildren.

I like the small towns where people look you in the eye and say something like “Good morning” or “beautiful day” or at least node in acknowledgement. I have met many many more good people than bad.

I like the trails in the parks and along the rivers.

Maryland Blue Crabs – I LOVE THE SEAFOOD. Sorry, I didn’t mean to shout that one so early. The proud home of The Naval Academy in Annapolis. Pass the Old Bay please.

Of course we like deserts – Smith Island Cake, Berger Cookies, Fishers Carmel Corn, Fountain Soda from Dumsers (cherry), and The Snowball stand a mile from my house.

I’ve watched large parts of the state become well integrated melting pots. While not perfect James Rouse did something special with Columbia.

Memorial on boardwalk

A short drive to the Nation’s Capital. A short drive to Baltimore. A short drive to the mountains and a short drive to the shore. And oh yeah. Like the license plate on this car says – DOOKSUX – Translation Duke Sucks

Meaning of Maryland Day lifted from the site linked above

Maryland Day, March 25th, commemorates the formal founding of the colony of Maryland, when the newly-arrived colonists erected a cross on St. Clement’s Island, offered prayers (perhaps by saying Mass), and took “possession of this Countrey for our Saviour and for our soveraigne Lord the King of England.” According to one of the three versions of Father Andrew White’s account of the voyage of the Ark and the Dove, this event took place on 25 March 1633/34 at the colonists’ first landfall in Maryland. In the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, this day is the Feast of the Annunciation, or “our blessed Ladies day” as Father White termed it, referring to the Virgin Mary. After consulting with the “Emperor of the Piscataway” and the “King of Yaocomoco,” Leonard Calvert, governor of the colony, negotiated the purchase of land on a nearby tributary of the Potomac River. This became the site of St. Mary’s City, the colony’s first settlement. Marylanders began observing Maryland Day in 1903, when the State Board of Education designated it as a day to be devoted to the study of Maryland history. In 1916, the General Assembly authorized the celebration of Maryland Day as a legal state holiday.

Congrats Lady Terps

Not bad. The University of Maryland Women’s Basketball team won in 2 OT’s to also make the Sweet 16 this year along with the men’s team. Truth be told the Women’s program has had a lot more success over recent years than the men’s, but this year they both are riding high.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Funny when you’re well, normal life seems so routine and boring at times. When you’re sick, normal life is this special place you yearn to return to with a passion.
  • All our lives are more at risk now than just mere weeks ago.
  • The cover comes off the car today.
  • Sorry Canada, I didn’t vote for the idiot. Ditto to EU, and the rest of the world apart from China, Russia and North Korea.

Taking the wheel again

For the first time in a few days I was inspired to come to the computer and write. I also plugged the camera batteries in because I need to get back to work this week. I lost some production time for sure. The clarity of thought is returning, I’m looking forward to leaving the house again Monday and a positive mindset is returning.

I’ve got 4 sick days on my calendar where I keep track of my treadmill miles and I’m looking forward to putting numbers on there again.

I’m missing a family event today. Few things frustrate me more. Actually, nothing frustrates me more than that. I’m on the mend but this persistent cough I’m sure would have made others uncomfortable and my energy reserves would have been severely tested. I get winded and coughing going up the stairs.

I’ll make it up to my daughter and take her and her daughter out to dinner soon.

Sports

The Maryland Terps play tonight and if they win they make the Sweet 16, something nobody predicted. At the beginning of the season and they weren’t even picked to make the tournament this year. Picked to finish 10-11th in their own conference (finished 2nd).

Our group lives for these games. Some of my friends, became quickly spoiled this year when the early games showed a lot of promise. Forgetting the complete unknown they were before the season started. No idea how 4 new starters would jell with the senior fixture in the center.

It’s a credit to these young men and the coaching staff that they made the round of 32 and if they win tonight, the round of 16 which before the season would have been unheard of. There is something special about this group and I hope they go further. But I thank them for the excitement, promise, and opportunity to really enjoy the March Madness.

I was able to attend 5 home games this year. And what fun they were with friends and my son. I have one wish for that program and they really need to fix this. The good seats are sold out but rarely completely full. Sometime embarrassing partially full. There has to be a way to get those seats that aren’t being used to kids and families that someday might be inspired to play for their home state. Get my drift. It solve two issues. It helps with recruiting and it keeps the stadium packed.

Oh, retaining this coach would be a good first step before anything else.

Warm and Sunny

What is your favorite type of weather? – A simple ask by the daily writing prompt.

Warm summer days and nights are my favorite type of weather. Blue skies and sunshine and a bright moon at night. I love summertime with passion, always have and always will. Ideally 85 – 90 degrees and low humidity but that is asking for a lot living in the mid-Atlantic region.

I’ve got to admit I was almost tempted to put down extreme weather. I find storms mesmerizing. Lightning, wind, snow, ice, and hail all intrigues me. But there is too much of a downside to that type of weather to be my favorite.

Alive again

I think my fever broke last night and hopefully I’m on the upside today. Like getting up off the mat after losing a fight. This guy beat the hell out of me. I guess age is a factor in fighting viruses now. I only have half a kidney on the right side due to cancer and when I’m sick it feels like George Forman (RIP) was giving kidney shots for 12 rounds.

My better half was sick earlier in the week and some friends seem to have had the same thing and they all were saying it takes 4-5 days to start feeling normal again.

Hopefully this week I’ll be able to get back into the surf of things.

Frustration

For the first time this year I couldn’t put some miles on the treadmill. I was sick on my daughter’s birthday. I had to move 3 days of planned to do list items to future days. There was a nice day when I missed riding with the top down on my car in the warm sun. I haven’t picked up a camera or worked on a piece of art in 3 days. I haven’t worked on yard or home in 3 days. It bothers me that I haven’t kept up with blogs I like.

And now the sun has set, and my cough is coming back and I feel warm. Maybe a premature prediction of life returning.

Politics

I see our Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was quoted saying “Let’s say Social Security didn’t send out their checks this month. My mother-in-law is 94, she wouldn’t call up and complain. She just wouldn’t. She would think something got messed up and she’d get it next month,” he said. “A fraudster always makes the loudest noise, screaming, yelling and complaining.”

Well I’m no fraudster Lutnick, and yes I’m going to be pissed as hell if I don’t get my check on time. You took it out of every one of my F’ing paycheck so do you part and get it here on time or there will be HELL TO PAY for it.

71 Million Americans will be letting you know how we feel about missing even one social security payment.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I believe I’m going to start to supporting the organization Democracy Forward.
  • Mess with my Social Security and I will FUBAR YOU.
  • If you don’t have your health, it seems to stop life.
  • I seriously doubt we will make it 4 years without major unrest.

A bridge too far

The winter season which ended today was a good one. I managed to stay healthy the whole time. But waking this morning with sinuses draining, a fever, cough and body aches, I’ve picked up what my wife has been fighting the last 4 days.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Our March Madness party kicks off today and I’ve never missed it before. Well, a first time for everything because today I’m going to take it easy and stay home. I’d just succeed at getting everyone there sick if I went.

I’ll see if I can cross the health bridge tomorrow. Today I fouled out and I’m riding the bench. Photo by Mike Hartley

This really sucks because March Madness is probably our group’s favorite sporting event to gather and go wild. We go all out on food an spend the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament watching basketball from noon to midnight or beyond.

And if our team is successful, we will gather again on Saturday and Sunday for a few games. And each of the following 3 weekends we watch as much as we can all the way to the Final on Monday night.

I won’t know what to do with myself today. The house won’t have all that good grub. There won’t be anyone too high five or running around yelling OOHHHH after someone gets jammed on. I’ll be missing the laughter and jokes. The taunting and disagreements. The friends that come that we don’t see regularly. Lots of things I’ll miss out on today.

Well boys, have a great time and I’ll be with you in spirit today.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I won’t be signing up for any of these betting apps/services. I think they are bad for society.
  • The sun is out this morning, but the weather is telling me to get the cover on the car.
  • I refuse to watch anything on Fox anymore. And I’m going to boycott as many of their advertisers as possible.

Going to the well

I feel like I’m running on empty today. I’m not refreshing my internal tank enough. And I’ve increased my physical work with the outside coming into play again.

Okay, I brushed off the last yawn and I’m back in gear.

Mother Nature and I have entered the ring again for another knock down, dragged out, brutal war to maintain the yard and keep the woods at bay. Round one is a tie. I’ve managed to get the raking, weed and feed down and beat back about 10 feet of wood encroaching on more of the back yard. I’m trying to return it to the original tree line, so I have another 10 feet to go along the back.

I always feel good being able bodied enough to do battle. Though I’m getting a bit old for extended periods and the extreme heat of the summer takes its toll. I still remember looking out a window one summer at someone else cutting my yard while I was recovering from a cancer surgery. I still remember that thought that I’d never complain about yard work again if I was healthy enough to be outside doing it.

So that battle comments aren’t so much as a complaint. More out of respect for the opponent.

Random Thoughts of the Day

Beautiful March Day

I had the pleasure of spending some time outside. A beautiful sky, warm enough to get down to a tee shirt and shorts in the afternoon. And it leaves me looking forward to tomorrow which should be even nicer outside.

I’ll be sailing into March Madness starting this evening. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I’ll spend the evening exercising, watching hoops, and doing some drawing. On the other hand, I’m tired, have sore hands and back from raking.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Most of my friends and neighbors have yard services. I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment or poor.
  • Excuse me but I think the market seems to be in a free fall. I thought it was the prices at the supermarket that were supposed to fall.

Control

Control is an elusive thing at times. We think we have it, and it’s gone. Maybe it was an illusion that we never had any in the first place. Yes we have control over decisions we make. But a lot of times those are made within a constructed framework of options.

I felt like I regained some control of life when I retired. But when I watch the news, it reminds me of the late 60s when everything seemed out of control.

It’s good to let go of control. For instance, as your children grow up.

Control goes to a lot of people’s heads.

Those that think they have control might want to double check that assumption.

I’ve been told I’m out of control at times.

The only thing I control right now is when this post started and ended.

I guess the warmer temps spurred a little green in the fields, in rows. I wish I could see some green days ahead, but all I see are warning yellow and danger red ones.

So, I will venture out today and look for some positives in life and keep my spirits alive.

Luck of the Pen

St. Patricks Day is something I never really got into. But to all who choose to celebrate, please be careful. And please don’t get on the road if you’ve been drinking.

Luck in Writing. Photo by Mike Hartley

I haven’t had much time at the computer or behind the lens today because it’s Granddaughter Day. We are just watching her for the day. Her school was out but her mom’s county was still going so we got a bonus day.

And what a day it was. She was just a joy to be with. and she drew me some pictures. We sat at the computer and printed out shots I took from her birthday party. I had pre-edited them and just let her pick which she wanted prints of.

Spent a few minutes teaching editing and what to look for. Had a number of similar shots and had her look for certain things like expressions, sharpness, content. The excitement when she saw the best one was exciting for me. Taught her to change ink and how to handle prints, where paper is loaded and how to tell which side to use.

Of course, we played and ran and had pizza for lunch. I also got her a cannoli to try for the first time. Liked the icing but not the shell so much.

I’m sitting here smiling but a bit sore. I always use a few muscle groups when grandchildren visit, that don’t get exercise normally.

I believe I’ll sit at the easel a bit this evening and see if I can draw something myself.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m sick of sports talk shows talking football year-round.
  • Courts may not stop him, people will.
  • I’m sick of sports shows so focusing on individuals within teams, more than the team. These are team sports we are talking about, NOT Javelin, NOT Golf, NOT TENNIS – team sports. Individuals don’t win or lose games, teams do.
  • Just figured out what was wrong. I haven’t had music on for an extended period.

Broken Dreams

Some seasons ended last evening. Some in very disappointing fashion being close to the Dance but not getting that invite. The team I follow has been on the outside looking in a few years. Sometimes in extremely tough fashion.

From the NCAA history section – The NCAA tournament field grew to 16 teams in 1951, doubled to 32 in 1975 and expanded to its current size of 64 teams in 1985. An opening-round game was introduced in 2001. Three more games were added to that round in 2011 for the inaugural First Four to take the tournament to its current size of 68 teams.

The 1975 expansion was partially due to one of The University of Maryland’s best teams ever, being denied entry to the tournament despite being the #3 rated team in the country. Back then only the ACC Champion from the ACC Tournament went. And that year it was NC State who eventually became the National Champion.

Some shoot no longer. Photo by Mike Hartley

While I feel bad for the schools that were left off, but let the games begin. There were a few this year who shouldn’t be in (North Carolina), but fate is what it is.

As a basketball junkie this is the fix season. One and done. Drama every game. Emotions on display. Great basketball.

Pools are nice but the real excitement is in the game.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Time to try harder.
  • Found this image and post started 8 years ago. As you might have noticed I’m cleaning out my drafts folder.
  • I’m beginning to wonder if this country as a collective whole is too stupid or lazy, to change the direction we’re headed.

This and That

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Happiness is found when looking for it. Unless it’s your default state of mind.

  • A plan for the coming week is being formed. And it’s a good one.
  • Speak up before it’s too late.

Step up

I was up early but my productivity has been slack. Still trying to feel comfortable in my skin today. And I’m not going to feel comfortable outside. It’s cool and damp. And those nasty storms that are killing and hurting so many in the south seem to be headed this way tomorrow.

It’s time to step it up this evening and knock out a few things. I was doing well with my To-Do list, but it’s filled up again. Adding those outdoor activities takes some significant time out of the schedule.

Steps at the State House. Photo by Mike Hartley

I need to get back on the exercise routine. Some pain slowed my roll on, Friday and this morning. Yesterday hurt my monthly average and I’ll have to hustle to make it up.

Politics

I’m disappointed in the following members of the Senate who voted for the budget yesterday. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Brian Schatz of Hawaii, Gary Peters of Michigan, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire—as well as Angus King, a Maine independent who caucuses with Democrats.

It is my opinion they showed an incredible lack of a spine.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I read about a long list of people who are stopping posting on X. I’m proud to say I never even had that crap, when it was Twitter.
  • I guess the plan is to wipe out our life’s saving, and then bring prices down.
  • I enjoyed reading John Feinstein a sportswriter, author and former Post employee. He passed yesterday. A nice tribute to him by a former co-worker Eugene L. Meyer, found here.
  • Tough loss today for my Terps. But we go dancing next week.

Work your craft

I observed this gentleman at the Home and Garden show at the State Fairgrounds a few weeks ago. It reminded me to get busy today working my crafts.

I’ve had a hard time starting much of anything in the last 24 hours. The body has been in a very uncooperative mode. Which means the mind isn’t right.

Maybe this evening I’ll get back on track. Like right after the Maryland basketball game that is about to start.

It’s that wonderful time of year. The sound of basketballs going through the net, the crowd jumping in unison, people moved to tears of joy or sorrow. Ah, March Madness is under way with it’s preliminary tune up – the conference tournaments, which conclude with the Selection Show on Sunday evening for the seedings and matchups for the BIG DANCE next week.

The home team The University of Maryland has had a wonderful year and I wish them great success in the coming days. GO TERPS

Come to order please

Good day Maryland and beyond. I’ll do my best to keep things civil today and dispense fair rulings on many subjects.

I’d like to commend the road crews out patching the numerous crater like potholes dotting our fine state. I thank you, my tires, rims and shocks, thank you.

Next on today’s docket. I see Howard County stepping up to support Federal workers. While job opportunities around here seem to be plentiful, I’m not sure the sudden volume of unemployed workers from the Federal side can find enough work.

The weather gets an unfavorable rating this morning with cool and cloud conditions blocking my sunrise. This is followed by clouds all day and a high of 56. FAIL.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was listening to the Beatle song “Come Together” and ran across the cover of that by the band Godsmack. What a rocking cover.
  • I don’t need artificial intelligence. I enjoy learning by experience.
  • Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain says Fox to its viewers.
  • There is a lot to learn about human nature. Because there are some sick individuals out here that keep pushing the envelope.

Thinking

This shot from my visit to Annapolis the other day made me think of my own son who will be having a daughter soon. Luckily, I have a daughter to share my heart with also. It’s hard to put those feelings into words that are adequate.

Sometimes a photo does help though, as these two below have arms tightly around each other, at the water’s edge, it’s that kind of trusting, secure embrace a father looks so forward to giving and getting.

Always good

There are so many good/great choices to eat in Annapolis that we could have stopped at a dozen places and been happy. We went to one of our favorites there called Carrol’s Creek Cafe for lunch.

It has a nice view of the harbor area and looking across at the Naval Academy. They hadn’t opened outdoor seating yet but I’m guessing it’s any day now.

The BBQ Shrimp wrapped in bacon and the Baked Oysters topped with horseradish, house made bacon and cabot vermont cheddar were really good. The Rockfish Tacos and Salmon Salads were excellent also. As usual, service was top notch.

Then it was over to Storm Brothers for some ice cream.

Annapolis is only 45 minutes from us (non-rush hour) so it’s an easy trip. Parking is getting a bit expensive, and I might have to look for alternatives instead of downtown.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Another sunny day ahead puts a smile on my face.
  • A note from my daughter this morning will make that smile last all day.
  • The only thing that was missing at the White House yesterday was one of those air-filled balloon characters that flop around as the President was trying to sell cars.
  • I may be repeating myself, but RFK Jr is an idiot. And a dangerous one.
  • Don’t be silent.

Zoom Zoom

Being a Miata owner, I like the phrase Zoom Zoom. I also like a zoom lens on a camera. Yes, there are drawbacks. Namely slower, and not as sharp throughout the whole range. But as I’ve gotten older the option of always getting closer is tougher than it used to be.

I’ve got a couple of zooms that I’m loving and learning to use. The cameras have different sensors so a comparison wouldn’t be fair, but I might post some from time to time. I had the opportunity to test out the range on this camera and found a good subject while shooting from the dock in Annapolis Maryland. Those two towers in the distance in the center have a smaller one at an angle just to the left of the two.

That small leaning tower is a crane. And behind the crane is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Not bad for handheld. Thought I didn’t have it extended all the way.

I zoomed in a little more trying to get the guys working on the barge but couldn’t get anything sharp. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve got to start at least taking my monopod out with me with this camera, if not the tripod. Because in addition to being slow they aren’t light either. I’ll give details on the equipment later and some same shoot comparisons this summer.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • When my better half is sick, nothing else matters.
  • Once my legs are in shape, I’ll move up and work on the core.
  • I wish I didn’t get frustrated when I start a new drawing, and it doesn’t work out.

Random Political Thoughts of the Morning

  • Worked very hard, all my life for that Social Security and Medicare I paid into, and it’s mine you meddling moron.
  • I wouldn’t rely on elected officials to wake up and stop this direction we’re headed in. Maybe it will be the people.
  • Elon calling Senator Mark Kelly and 25-year Navy Veteran, a traitor is hysterical. Then again if you take Elon’s Nazi/Communist and greed viewpoint, he might see himself as justified in saying that.

Easy Street

The first shot of the day as we walked out of the parking garage in downtown Annapolis, I caught a couple on Easy Street. What a way to start life. I wish them good health, good fortune and lots of love.

And to be technically correct I believe they are standing on Francis Street off Main. But I still like the Easy Street on the awning.

I just pulled the lens cap off as fast as I could and shot this first one because I could sense they were finishing up the shoot. Photo by Mike Hartley

Fortunately they had a professional working. I did capture a few other shots of the streets of Annapolis, which I’ll post later tonight because I have a few other tasks to catch up on first.

Picking your direction

Each day we are offered choices. Which path will we take. Where do we go, with whom do we go with, what time do we leave and return. What tasks or fun do we choose? Do we stick with the same profession? Or in the same relationships.

Do we have that bowl of ice cream? Do we leave on time, so not having to speed to get to the destination? Do we get the tires replaced or squeeze a few more miles out of them. Do we take that loan or pay one off early?

I was about to throw this photo out when I noticed all the different directions people were pointed. I walk the city and beach a lot when I’m at the ocean. I feel like I’m going a dozen different directions at times. About the only time I don’t is when I’m on the treadmill.

My better half says we walked close to 5 miles today. And I have time to get on the treadmill for another few. I do have a lot of editing and printing to do for the family. And I haven’t even downloaded the shooting I did in Annapolis today.

Random Thoughts of the Afternoon

  • Kids at play are the coolest.
  • Ah, I see more market destruction.
  • Veterans are being fired. And VA services being cut. I’m thinking of organizing a protest anytime Trump thinks about visiting Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Prices up, mindless cuts being made and important services about to disappear for good. Interesting what Fox News calls success.
  • Ran into a lot of friendly people today out walking. Bet it was the weather that put everyone in good spirits.
  • The way Trump is treating Veterans should really help the recruiting efforts. NOT

Get up

I slept longer than normal and now I’m feeling rushed. There is much to accomplish today so I best make use of every minute. I haven’t had time to create much new work on the photo side, so I grabbed a shot I hadn’t used before to get this week off to a colorful start.

The only shooting I did this weekend was from my granddaughter’s birthday party. Which I have to edit, send and make some prints from later today. I did charge the batteries up for today if I get the opportunity there will be some new images later.

The weather today looks nice so some time outside will be had. I love soaking up the sun. It’s almost, warm enough in the afternoon for shorts and tee shirts. Like I said, almost and that is only a few hours in the afternoon. But hope of even warmer days is ahead and I’m pumped.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Watching another beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic this morning.
  • I wonder what the tipping point will be in support of Trump. There is one coming, I’m just not sure which or what combination of events will trigger it.
  • There is a ton of pollen out there already. And I’m ready to sneeze through spring.
  • It’s almost warm enough to move the woodworking outside. Less cleanup that way.
  • We might be skipping further into history than I thought. Maybe near the fall of Rome.

Couldn’t pass this up

It’s National Crabmeat Day. And in Maryland, that is something to Celebrate. Who picked this date, is my first question? Our season in the Chesapeake Bay runs April 1 to December 15th this year. What is with March date? Okay, I won’t obsess with that.

Instead, I think I’ll make a point to get some crabmeat this week and maybe for dinner this evening if I can talk my better half into at least a crab pretzel or cup of crab soup at the local establishment.

We LOVE our CRABS here in Maryland. I can’t wait to teach my grandson how to pick them. I don’t think my granddaughter was thrilled with that though. Maybe in a few years.

Each summer is a feast of these critters. Prepared in so many ways, all of them great. From picking them fresh out of the steamer to crab imperial, you can’t go wrong.

There is no way I’m going to be able not to have some kind of crab today now that I’ve spent the last few moments thinking about it.

Inspiring

My son and I attended the final game of the regular season for the Maryland Terps men’s hoop team yesterday and relished the victory. It’s been a special season. One that was unexpectedly very successful. It appears Maryland will finish in 2nd or 3rd in the Conference when they were picked to finish 11th on average.

It’s also been a rarity of a season in many ways. I’ll start with the coach. After last season he was already on the hot seat, despite not having much talent. An entirely new starting lineup this year with the exception of one player. That one player is a senior. What? A senior still playing for the same team for 4 years. And not a bad player at that. He could have transferred when a coaching change was made in his time. He stayed. He is Maryland Pride.

Julian Reese and his teammates have come together as a unit in a unique way very quickly. The success the entire starting unit dubbed the “CRAB FIVE“, a takeoff of the old Michigan teams “Fab Five” has had together is special.

Anyone on that starting unit can score 20-30 points a game. All 5 starters average in double figures. The team averages 81.5 points a game. But the strongest part of the team is their defense. They are stifling. Defense has kept them in every game this season.

And while the bench hasn’t been the scoring machine they have provided some pressure defense and a few key plays this season to keep victories alive.

I so hope they do well in the Big 10 Tournament and the Big Dance NCAA Tourney. It would be nice to send the seniors off with a championship and keep this train rolling. Because when this team is playing well, they can play with anyone in the country. Go TERPS.

I hope to attend a lot more games next year.

Sands

This has been a festive day. It started it off in a good way and in good spirits. There is a birthday in the family to celebrate, it’s Friday, I’m retired, and was nothing pressing on the agenda today.

Sand and stones. Photo by Mike Hartley

That sun is feeling stronger by the day. Soon the call of the sands will become impossible to resist. It’s 54 days till Cruisin Ocean City May 1-4. I know I’ll be doing at least a daytrip one of those dates. From my limited attendance I like the fall show better. And now that they moved the spring show earlier in the month that means cooler temps are possible.

I don’t know if I can wait that long though. I can see one of these warm 80 degree late March or April days triggering that itch to throw the beach towel, flip flops, floppy hat and cooler in the car, put the top down, hat and glasses on and head east.

Reflection

I used to like having our old Post Office close by. The shot below is from 9 years ago. It has since been torn down and a row of townhouses now occupies this space and some of the woods that used to be there.

This, like much of Howard County has been carved up. I live here, and have a hard time keeping up with all the changes going on.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The treadmill is a walk of the mind.
  • It’s not the lie, it’s that people believe the lie and perpetuate it.
  • When I’m alone, I miss having a pet. That is a lot of the time.
  • With the huge drop in circulation at both the Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post it seems like the area is ripe for a Middle Left publication. The Baltimore Banner is trying to fill that void but they are digital only. Not that many people read print anymore.
