Foot Pain

There are too many hazards in the way of my feet. I’m going to be limping for a bit. Maybe if I had eyes on my feet. Maybe if my feet weren’t so big. All I know is my right foot is throbbing like all get out. Let me get back to my ice bag and elevated foot.

At least the feet aren’t sunburned. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I have discipline. I didn’t know I had it, but I do.
  • I’m awfully tired for a Saturday night.
  • Rain is essential, and I’m thankful for it but I still would rather have sun.
  • If the swelling goes down I’m going to take a long walk in the morning.

Going for a spin

Ah, the days of reaching under the dash to release the hand brake. An AM radio that would go in and out as you changed elevations and a hand-cranked window. No automatic door locks, you used your fingers. And if you look carefully this one has a unique knob. The heat came out at your feet. Big steering wheels.

My father had a 57 Chevy but it was gone before I could drive. Photo by Mike Hartley

I took something a little more current out for a spin. I can’t believe my Miata is 8 years old already. Still looks new to me. I think I’ll keep it till I can get historic tags on it.

Have a good afternoon all.

A blade and a buzz

It started with one. And then two and that is fine because cicada hornets leave people alone for the most part. Now I have several and it’s hard to walk out back so I’ll have to remedy this situation soon if more come. Rumor is the female’s sting is quite painful. I hope not to find out.

It was cloudy as hell yesterday when I shot these. I’ll get some sharp ones today with the sun out.

Below are 2 of 3 Boing V22 Osprey planes that few by. You should hear these monsters. I rarely see these going over my area. All I knew is something big was coming by so I grabbed the old Kodak I had lying around and got this before they cleared the trees. It was a nasty day out with minimal light and storms on the horizon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • At least one of my friends is not having a good technology day. I suspect more are also but too busy to reach out.
  • I’m ready for a great second half of the baseball season.
  • My better half said something about pizza for dinner. I’m excited already.
  • I see a lot of exercise this coming week. So I’m going to rest up today.

Savor

I’m trying to savor the moment more but time keeps marching on to a faster beat. Events, get-togethers, and meetings pass before we have time to fully catch up. I guess it seems limited to me still, with most of my friends and family working.

I’m savoring the cooler temps not listening to the AC run almost non-stop yesterday and today. It’s cool out this morning at 65 degrees here in wonderful Central Maryland when I started to write this. It’s my time of year, shorts, tee shirts, and flip flops so anything between 65 and 105 is fine with me.

Taking it easy today. Photo by Mike Hartley

This morning I’m savoring some fine music, good health, and great times. Right now this worldwide computer glitch isn’t affecting me. I wonder what my old compadres in IT are doing this morning?

Look, it’s Friday morning. Hold on for a few more hours and then the fun wagon pulls up and we can all board the bus. I’ll be the driver waiting for you. Because the party started early here.

All aboard. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Young children’s family birthdays are fun.
  • Being young in spirit is a state of mind.
  • I love watching wildlife. We have a family of raccoons now in the backwoods.
  • I have to stop falling asleep in the recliner.
  • Ronnie Van Zant could belt out a tune.

For the love of it

I just put the cover on the car because we have some storms coming, but tomorrow I’ll be in my element behind the wheel. I saw the tailpipe below and it inspired the title of this post. I saw it at the last Miata meet.

Temps will be in a much more tolerable range tomorrow so we can enjoy the miles. I’ll get out early and pull the cover off and do a little detailing. Then I’ll see if my better half would like to join me for a short road trip and maybe a lunch.

I live for summer days like the one ahead.

Do I hear 100

Good day Howard County and beyond. I’ve been out a bit already and that heat was beating down strong early this morning. So be it, I’ve still got chores to do and an early start was essential. I hope to be done before it gets to the max temps.

OK, 2/3 of the mowing is complete. I’ll do the rest on Wednesday or Thursday. With this heat and drought, I haven’t cut in 2 1/2 weeks. Was long in spots and dormant in others.

I saw 99 degrees on the computer, I strolled past the Weather Channel and Baltimore was 104. I was downtown yesterday and it cooks on those city streets.

I hope to pack in a ton of activities in the next 2-3 months. Some of them are local like the Howard County Fair which takes place August 3-10. I hope to spend a few days there shooting that event.

The Ellicott City project I’ve been working on has some holes in it that I will be filling with some shots this week.

Well, time for an early dinner at Oscar’s Alehouse in Woodstock. If the rain holds off I’m going out shooting after the All-Star Game.

Have a great afternoon all.

Wonderland

Friday was family day. We all drove up to Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster PA. What a fun day for all. Even though it was overcast and a little drizzle here and there, it wasn’t as hot as hades or a downpour that many of the surrounding areas got.

What a day. Photo by Mike Hartley

What a day for us grandparents trailing the kids and grandkids, my better half and I would look at each other and acknowledge that we loved that sight. Sometimes we carry them, dance with them. Wave to them on rides, watch shows with them, eat with them, run with them, and play in the waterpark with them.

Shower anyone? Photo by Mike Hartley

It was such a grand day and one I look forward to repeating often in retirement. I’ve made well over 100 prints for the family to enjoy.

I managed a little carving today and got the cover off the car for my ride this evening. I’ll throw the tripod in the car and see what I can capture.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I thought about mowing but that is as far as it got.
  • The violence continues. Just more high profile today.
  • Didn’t feel like I got a lot done, but the results say otherwise.
  • A very busy week ahead. I say with a smile on my face.

It’s going 2 be a Sweet Weekend

Even with the rain, it’s going to be a Sweet weekend ahead.

At Carlo’s Bakery in NYC a few weeks ago. Photo by Mike Hartley

Time with family is sweet and this weekend I have some. I had a great time with two best friends last night so my weekend is off to a flying start already.

I also have some time to explore my hobbies and I’d like to complete some carving this weekend. Being a one-man band I find it hard at times to keep up with it all but it’s fun trying. I find the more organized I am the more progress I make.

Working on being a better finisher is something I need to continue to do. I did finish a series of prints for some friends of their families. I have some more pictures from NYC to edit. There are 4 more panels to carve this weekend for my clock project. And I have to make prints for my granddaughter’s graduation.

Hell, my to-do lists are miles long. And I take some pride in that I have more than enough to keep me busy and happy in my senior years.

I’m going to try something new with technology starting today and I’ll let you know how it works out soon. If it does work, it should show here over time.

Dinner with Dad

If you could host a dinner and anyone you invite was sure to come, who would you invite? – An interesting question from the Daily writing prompt.

I was just thinking about something like this the other day. It was the anniversary of my father’s passing this week. I never got to talk to him as an adult and remember few meals with him at all as a youth, so it would be Mom and Dad.

It’s almost 6 decades since he passed and mom has been gone over a decade now also. A nice relaxing dinner with them to ask all the questions that roam about my mind unanswered.

On Dad’s lap holding what looks to be one of those old flashbulbs. I’m guessing photo by Mom.

Keys

It’s great discovering the keys to life. Some are a little late but better late than never. I guess wisdom from many lessons along the way helps.

There are special keys to every day in the decisions we make. What do you spend your time doing, thinking about, communicating with, helping out, praying or hoping for, playing with, laughing with, loving with?

What do you spend your money on or save for? Where and how do you choose to live?

The health key is one I was careless with. I didn’t appreciate what I was given and abused myself at times in my life. Luckily most of that was short-lived. You have been given this key for life. If you, treat it roughly, leave it in dangerous places or situations, and don’t take care of it, one day it might no longer fit.

Some keys you didn’t know you had, open the door to the wonders of your children and family.

Sometimes others give you keys. Like my better half who helped me stop the crash course I was on with booze.

Today I’m feeling capable of much more. That is a special key that isn’t always within grasp. It’s a nice key and one not to be wasted.

I recently acquired a key to retirement, which opened a whole new set of doors to walk through and a big keyring to pick and choose.

Today’s key will be hard work and then some rest for an early start tomorrow.

Tomorrow might be picking the right key for the desert.

Chevy vs Chevy

Just a little late day contrast. I’ve been busy editing photos, carving and catching a nap in the hammock. But now the rains have come and I’m still a little light on sleep so maybe I’ll crash early and get up and moving early again.

Still trying to optimize the space in the basement and making some progress in that. And like these two pictures I mix a little old with the new.

Go get’em Champ. Photo by Mike Hartley

Tomorrow I’m getting out and doing some new shooting. Not sure of the destination but I’ll be out and about here and there and everywhere.

Then again both neighbors had their yards cut today so I’m drawing the long blade of grass currently. I’m not too inspired for yard work the next few days though.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Bring on the heat.
  • Whoa it’s hot, step into the AC
  • Back outside because I’m not a wimp.
  • Back inside because I’m old.
  • Back outside because the hammock is now in the shade.
  • I think the lightning bugs loved that rain. They are lighting up the backyard.
  • See ya tomorrow. I hope.

Babes and my wood pile

My extended family was back as usual. These two are loving my backyard for play and meals. I’ve seen more wildlife this year than in past seasons. And that is wonderful, except that my better half tires of me saying “Come look.”

I probably get over-excited about it, but I grew up seeing a good bit and continue to love observing nature.

I hooked up my old speakers and receiver and kicked out some tunes this morning. My better half goes out for a haircut later so I’ll blow the dust off them while she is out. It’s been many years since I’ve had them active.

Now I have something I can use for an outdoor party. And it’s time for one indeed.

Dilemma #1 of the day – Do I take the cover off the car, go out in the heat, and then have to put it on later before the storms, or do I leave it on and take the SUV and the AC?

Dilemma #2 of the day – With the CD player inside alive again which to I leave in the house and which in the car?

Dilemma #3 of the day – Woodwork, drawing, or photography? Or all of them!

It’s nice to have easy questions to answer. I like being my boss.

Stay cool and flexible

Be like this guy, stay cool, move slowly, relax. I feel like diving in a pool of water. It’s cooking outside and getting even warmer. I decided to put the shovel down and spend the afternoon inside working.

Hang loose. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve got two cameras that need images downloaded. I’m wiring up my old stereo, multi-CD player, and speakers. I’ll have to wait till the better half goes out to test the system out. I need a new needle for the turntable before that can be incorporated.

It’s also time to crank up the printer again. I finished a project for two friends. But I have many more to do so let me open a new pack of paper.

Then it’s back to the workshop and turning wood into sawdust.

My better half picked up a large cherry snowball for me on the way home today so there is no reason to go out now. Except to catch a few rays or lay in the hammock in the shade.

Remember to watch your feet on hot surfaces and your pets who don’t have the benefit of shoes.

Timing

On a recent trip to Gettysburg PA., my better half and I visited the town and then drove the battlefield tour. I was walking back to my car after taking a monument shot and this old Caddy passed by. I just caught a glimpse of the plate and quickly hopped in our car, got behind him, and took this shot.

Right place-Right time

It’s a New York tag but I guess the guy has a connection or loves this place. Sorry it’s not the sharpest shot, I took it through our windshield. He turned off our path so this was my only opportunity.

Set Sail

Sometimes in life, you enter a zone. I’m kind of inspired this month so far. I’m making some prints for family and friends this morning. But apparently, I’ve been slacking here because the stats are down a bit. No problem, I’ll just step up the effort a bit.

Cast off, Mr. Christian. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve picked up the Dremel tool a few times this morning. That is going to take some practice and learning some skills. Time to hit up YouTube. But I’ll keep practicing each day now.

I’ve got to dig out an azalea bush and put down some weed killer before it gets too hot.

I had a wonderful day with my children and grandchildren for a cookout at my son’s home yesterday. It was great fun and food. And we got sent home with leftovers so I’ll feast again today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was surprised by how light the traffic on the Baltimore Beltway on Sunday afternoon and evening.
  • Leave this place a better place for your kids – do it ONE VOTE at a TIME.
  • I love the honky tonk piano of Billy Powell on the song Call Me the Breeze.
  • Stay connected, it’s a lot more fun than the alternative.

Send it

Every once in a while it’s fun to watch someone send it. I haven’t seen this one send it but I sure would like to. Of course, there is a time and a place for it and a car meet parking lot isn’t one of them.

From Mikey and Mel’s car show in June. Photos by Mike Hartley

If any car needed a soundtrack it was this one. I think it might be the definition of a radical cam and a boatload of other performance parts equaling massive horsepower.

Maybe I’ll see some of these types out tooling around on this hot summer night in front of us. I had a choice a few years back. Muscle car or small convertible toy. I almost went the Hemi route but I’m glad I didn’t. First I’m bad with temptation and if I had that horsepower under my foot and a strong clutch I’d probably have some tickets and higher insurance.

As Dirty Harry said once “A man’s got to know his limitations” and as I’ve grown I’ve recognized I have some as we all do.

Let me go rinse the day’s dirt off and then put the tripod and cameras in the car and see if I have any luck with some night shots.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Does it feel like July is slipping by already?
  • I have figured it out. But I went upstairs and it was gone.
  • Anticipation is a bitch when it’s on the wrong things.
  • There it is again, this sense of urgency. It’s a little unsettling.

Don’t Overheat

Keep that engine cool today. I’m not cruising till this evening. that sun is just too much with the top down.

I had a strong start this morning but faded badly this afternoon. I seem to be catching a second wind now and I’m ready to get back to speed.

Line up

Yeah, I park with these guys and gals. Just a shot from the Maryland Miata Club meeting this past Monday in Columbia. I’m enjoying both the chances to meet people and shoot their cars. And start learning more about my own and what I might do in the future with it.

A row of reds. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve only been to 3-4 monthly meetings but they also do rides and track events, scenic cruises, talk cars, swap and buy parts, give advice and support, and just have fun and be friendly.

Take a deep breath, Sir. Photo by Mike Hartley

I might just go to one of the track events just to shoot photos of the group. I took enough chances in my younger days. I don’t push things anymore.

I’d guess there were over 50 cars at the July meeting. It was a beautiful day

I’ll be putting a few miles on my own this weekend but the cover is going on it soon because the rains are on the way.

Oh YEAH

Another HOLIDAY I’m NOT working for the MAN. Again, hats off to those who toil on holidays, weekends, and nights. You keep this world running. Happy 4th of July to all.

I remember not dealing well with working holidays downtown late in my career. It had gotten old and I was starting to get resentful. Only one or two years did I ever get to see a glimmer of the National fireworks on the Mall in DC.

Aim High, Shoot Low. The title of an old Yes song. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m sure we will hear some fireworks tonight. I’m a little surprised none have gone off already.

It was a great Wednesday evening with one of my best friends. One of those nights when I get home and sit in a chair and many hours later wake up in said chair.

Cooking some bacon this morning and hope to get outside a bit before the rains. And of course, I have to grill something today being it’s the 4th.

Have a great morning all.

Great day

What a wonderful day we had. A leisurely start, a trip to Emmitsburg Maryland, and Gettysburg Pennsylvania on a beautiful Tuesday.

We spent a few hours wandering the town and then did the auto tour through the battlefield. I’ve got to think through a better approach to this. I feel I did a better job when we visited Antietam. I might have to see if I can shoot one of those reenactments one year.

I do like the shot of the Union Cigar Club below and the men smoking under the awning. I’ve been trying to get a little better at street photography.

I used to like an occasional cigar but haven’t had one in decades. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m still a bit hesitant about shooting people. But I’m going to overcome that. Or at least I think I will. I’m fairly good with friends and family.

Goodfellas tonight. I like it but I’ll pass, will probably be outside enjoying a warm summer evening. Photo by Mike Hartley

Low 80s with a firm breeze all day and passing clouds for occasional shade. Perfect for a day outside.

Bang. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was a great day but there was one interesting moment. At one of the stops, some people were talking about politics and having some serious issues with liberals and how Trump is right in a rather aggressive fashion.

I just thought it was a shame that in this place, history might be brewing to repeat itself and the irony is completely lost on them. Or maybe it wasn’t and this a thought that is being entertained?

Well onto another sunny but more humid and hotter day. There is much editing to be done before I can shoot again. At least that is the current plan.

Nice Art, Nice Gentleman

I observed these two wonderful sculptures on Old Court Road for a while now. I tried to get a shot or two from the car but they were a distance from the road.

Yesterday I stopped at the edge of one of the two entrances to the driveway and started to take a shot from the fence line.

I try very hard to respect people’s privacy and property. Well just as I was starting to shoot the homeowner waved me down. So I entered and met a very nice gentleman whose name I wrote down but didn’t secure in the convertible down the road.

He was so generous with his time and allowed me to take a few shots of the carvings that I didn’t want to misremember his name. But I will stop and thank him and maybe drop a print in the mailbox. And I will update this post.

He shared a bit of history about the home and property as well as the people from Pennsylvania who did the carvings. If I remember correctly I believe he said they were done over 9 days.

They are nice works and made me think if I was capable of pulling off something like this myself.

It certainly would be an ambitious project. But I do have two oak trees in front that are struggling.

This is a real shed on the side of the property.

Bang

The starting gun has sounded and we’re off again on another adventure. A productive morning and restful one also. A quick haircut, some music and headed out for a cruise and some photos. A stop at Duchess for a sandwich for lunch and down to Old Ellicott City to eat it parked against the Patapsco.

Watched a fisherman for a few minutes. I didn’t see any landed but then again I wasn’t practicing patience either.

Parking it

Nice lines. Interesting parking spot shapes.

It’s good to be back and it was also nice to take a break. One of my best friends invited us to their bay home for the weekend. We were only able to do one day but it was a very good one. A wonderful early breakfast and lazy morning on the porch before a bike ride. The bay was a bit rough for kayaking.

A shower and off to dinner at The Narrows Restaurant a short drive from our spot on Kent Island. Wow, a great dinner with best friends and our better halves. We ate so well and returned for a muted sunset but a fairly good light show of lightning.

Unfortunately, we ran into that mess about 10 miles from home and crawled the rest of the way. I thought about stopping several times during that span but thankfully there was only another car or two on the road so I just felt my way at a snail’s pace.

Only 8 hours left in the wonderful month of June. It’s been a great one and I’ll remember the many special days with my children and grandchildren. And the closeness I continue to feel to my partner.

I hope this July is filled with highs. There is always one tough day this month remembering a close loss. But many good days are already planned. But first, make the best use of the last of June.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • New production method. Only emergency stopping.
  • I feel like I look healthier with a nice tan.
  • Mirror check, haircut needed.
  • Time to warm up the printer. I gave it a rest yesterday.

Shifting into the WEEKEND

I look at every day as a weekend now. But I also feel the excitement from those still putting in the Monday -Friday 9-5 at the office. And a couple of my friends are geared up for this one.

Very few people would have an idea how to move this car. Photo by Mike Hartley

My Friday was filled with grandchildren sharing love and laughs. I’m blessed to be somewhat close to my children so it’s wonderful to share the time with them and help where we can with their children.

My grandson loves riding on the tractor. He found the throttle today. There is a little bit of daredevil in this one. I ask if he wants to go faster. Yeah. We tool around in 2nd after a long ride in 1st. I say you want to go faster. Yeah. I put it in third but throttled down and he was smiling like all get out.

Today I caught some deer grazing out back and showed the kids. They were so excited to see the two baby deer with the mom. My grandson couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t come to him. He kept hitting his side like he does, when he wants his dogs at home to come or someone to come with him.

I could go on about the joys of the day with both of them but I’ll just say it was a special day.

Been a while

I haven’t tried a move like this in a while. I need to see what spine doctor he has. I do feel more limber and agile than I have in years. I hear rumors that is important in your senior years.

The clearing after the night of thunderstorms. The air smells fresh, and the birds are singing just as daylight approaches. And back to bed, I went. Yep couldn’t sleep around 2 am and was up till daybreak.

What a beautiful day outside. I sat on the deck for a while working on the tan and just watched the clouds go by. I think I might have been 8 years old since I can remember being relaxed and able to enjoy that as I did today.

Feeling good despite the busted sleep schedule. I might have to try a late-night workout this evening. Also hoping to get a few frames in the Nikon and a few miles on the Miata in the next few days.

Heads up

I haven’t heard the rumble of thunder yet but I believe it’s coming. The equipment and tools have been covered or stored. Things that can be blown are secured.

My back has been feeling it from some time spent with the power washer today. But in looking at the concrete pads I cleaned I’m happy with the effort. Tomorrow should be the final section.

Prarie Dog from Maryland Zoo. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m making my grandson some prints of animals they can put by his crib and switch out for learning. I’ll give them to his father to take home this week.

I’m hoping the Yankees even up the Subway series tonight. I’d love to sit and watch the whole game but I’d like to make some progress on some prints, some work on a book, and now that I have a clean space on the workroom table maybe some Dremel time.

Some days when I look back I wonder where the day went. Sometimes I don’t feel that major accomplishment. That is usually because I don’t into account all the small stuff I knock out each day. When I look at the whole, it’s a much better picture.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I swear there is heroin in ice cream. Either that or the Freezer has a voice.
  • Sometimes a different view or a second look yields a diamond not seen originally.
  • Don’t delay, go with your gut.
  • I sense a practical joke coming tomorrow.

Still Here

An email today from the V Foundation reminded me that June is National Cancer Survivors Month along with a few stats. I’m one of the fortunate 18.1 million in the US which is 5.4% of the population. Since 1991 the cancer death rate has decreased by 33% it reads.

I’m going to send a shout-out to the University of Maryland Medical Center and the doctors and nurses there who still have me walking around today. Thank you again.

So far, so good. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was talking to an old friend who has had medical issues also and the appreciation and thankfulness for each day is kind of a blessing we are both so glad for.

On the other hand, it’s like this shadow that moves behind you. It’s there but extremely hard to get a glance at it. You don’t know how close or far away from you it is. You don’t even know what it is but you feel that danger.

I hope it’s never or a long time before I’d have to go through those doors again. Photo by Mike Hartley

To my friends who have passed from Cancer, I remember you, I say your name. To my surviving friends, I wish you continued good health. I’ve donated already to the American Cancer Society which means I’ll have to get one to the V-Foundation also soon.

I just had a good idea of how to salute an old friend so I got to run and execute. Have a great afternoon.

Just chilling

Another great day of summer. The sun is blazing and I’m feeling good. I’ve picked up downed branches, and sprayed for ants outside. The decks have been blown off and the power washer is out and ready to get going.

Putting in some work on the hobbies today and making some progress. The printer was humming away early this morning. Made some family prints and a few for some friends.

Did a few hours yesterday with the top down. A bit warm but still enjoyable. If I don’t get out soon it will be too hot and then the storms roll in this afternoon.

Standing tall at the Maryland Zoo. Photo by Mike Hartley

A nice lunch yesterday with my sister and an old fellow graduate from our childhood neighborhood. It’s good to catch up with family and friends. I haven’t been able to connect with my sister much lately but trying to correct that.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There are the most beautiful pairs of birds out back. Bluebirds, cardinals, finches, robbins, and a pair of hawks.
  • I’ve been slack making the best use of the tools I have. Too correct that I’ve made my first daily goal to make better use of the nice printer I have.
  • The difference so far here with this high heat, the humidity is low which is unusual. I’m sure it will change but it has been nice.
  • I write and blog because it makes me happy and I hope someone else from time to time.

Missing it

I do miss riding a motorcycle. The convertible is very nice but that openness of a bike and nimbleness is a special feel. Each time I see a rider with a big smile on his face it takes me back to rides on local roads or when I’m heading to the Eastern Shore of Maryland the feeling of crossing the Bay Bridge and the open roads leading to the shore.

The smell of the salt water as you cross the Route 50 bridge into Ocean City. The quick temperature drops of a few degrees as the water-cooled air filters over you.

Rider entering Mikey and Mel’s cruis’in. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a delicate art of riding a bike. Lots of awareness is needed especially in this area. The power in those machines will test the rider’s skills if pushed. Road conditions have worsened. And the fact that due to Covid when everyone returned to the roads, a significant percentage forgot how to drive.

So while I long to throw my leg over a bike, put the kickstand up, twist the throttle, and go, I’ll just use my memories to satisfy that desire.

To those enthusiasts who continue that passion, ride safe, enjoy, and smile. I’m actively looking out for you. But always remember, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Stay upright, and live longer.

Backing into Monday

Yeah, instead of firing out, I’m backing into Monday. I might wash the car, cook some bacon, do a little carving or photography. I see a long nap in the afternoon in the hammock being I’ve been unable to sleep much this morning. I think I woke up at 1 am. Good thing I’m retired.

At the same time, I feel pumped and excited about creating something today. Maybe it’s just the musical inspiration I’m getting because I put the headphones on and the hard-driving rock & roll has my body moving in the chair.

Most of you are off again driving and diving into the new workweek. I’m doing the same but for myself instead of someone else. I love my schedule and commute, I can mix pleasure and progress at the same time, weaving in and out of each other.

I think this is the last week of work for my brother-in-law who is a few years older than me and finally retiring. I’m looking forward to some walks and exercise with him.

It’s so nice to unwind after a busy weekend and not have to think about someone else’s business. And given the level of chaos at my former employer (The Washington Post) I’m so glad I’m on the outside looking in.

That reminds me, I have to work on the career wall. The last piece came last month. The Post gave me a framed picture of the front page on the day I started. That along with other mementos and photos and the things from my first career with the local Times papers will make up a corner of my basement soon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Bon Scott could really belt out a tune.
  • A brief reprieve from the high heat today. I think I’ll spend it outside.
  • An early start to the day always feels good.
  • If you can be satisfied even on the toughest days, life is good.

When feeling blue feels good

I’ve been looking hard at other paint jobs and discovering what I’d like. Not that one is imminent but when it’s time I’ll know. And what better place than car meets? And it allows me to practice some photography along the way.

I probably still won’t go blue but this is a very nice shade with some great detailing above.

Engines keep the world running. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not sure which holds my interest more now. Cars or cameras. If I’m not driving them I seem to be shooting them. And learning more about both is a lot of fun. I hope to pick up some feedback on suspension changes when the time comes to replace the stock ones at the coming Miata meet-up a week from tomorrow.

The more I shoot the more I seem to enjoy life. I doing more experimenting with different settings than I have in a while. And that effort will continue today and into this evening. I’d like to get outside this night to work on some timed shots.

But first, the yard needs cutting. So out I go before the real heat of the day cranks up. Stay cool, stay safe. Well if I followed that advice, I wouldn’t have any fun now, would I?

I went early as did several people to beat the heat but that was a wish that didn’t come through because if you were in the sun at 8 am it was already getting hot. By 9:30 am when I left it was sweltering already.

Probably would have stayed a while longer but had another outside event to attend. I was one of the few convertibles out that I saw with the top down. I’ve mentioned before that I like summer.

I even spent some time in the hammock outside this afternoon. Yes, it was in the shade. I must have passed out because my better half woke me for dinner.

I hope you all either stayed cool or had more temperate weather. Now I’m just waiting for a late-night ride on a warm summer night.

Lookout

Good morning, just taking in the view and planning a great day. I have a ton of images to download and edit. I’d like to make use of this good weather and be outside a bit. There are several posts I’ve started that I should finish and publish.

I see you. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s going to be a busy weekend again filled with family and friends. Life is great.

Midweek restless

Still not sleeping well. Both the mind and body are still trying to be very active late into the night and early morning. I find myself sleeping in shifts some days. I’ll figure out a plan and see if I can get a grip on correcting it.

Rest easy big guy. Photo by Mike Hartley

A busy day of planning and some research. And some yard work as always. Knocked out some overdue items like sending some family photos to my children. Now I have to get to the prints that need to be made, but that will wait.

I hope to concentrate on capturing some new images tomorrow. Only one or two more zoo photos to share. Tonight I’ll watch a baseball game and then some shuteye for an early rise on Thursday.

Best nature side eye

Okay, enough of the clickity click. Yes after I got this shot I moved on.

SideEye – Photo by Mike Hartley

Pacing myself with outside activities today. Trying to remember that doing stupid things gets stupid prizes. So what better break to take than creating a post?

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I think I’ll wait to mow till this heat wave is over because I see no sense in helping the grass burn.
  • One of the great things about my home is the nature I get to see.
  • I’m waiting for the shade to come over the hammock so I can relax some more.
  • That segment on AI on 60 Minutes this past weekend confirmed my worry that this is a dangerous time in our history because technology is getting away from us. Among other things.

I bow no more

Well, I will bow before my grandchildren if they want. But not for a job anymore. And that feels liberating in many ways. Working for some was like oil and water, those days are in the rearview mirror.

The perspective change is a nice one. But it’s still very new and strange. Maybe it was just my view of the job that was a little off. I always looked at things like a partnership. But it isn’t. Some are very resistant to ideas, change, or being challenged.

I’ve been told I was rather outspoken at the job. I said what was on my mind. I wasn’t afraid to say the same thing I said to a coworker in the hall to management. Landed me in HR a few times but I have no regrets. That’s okay, I don’t have to deal with that anymore. And thankfully most of the time wasn’t negative.

I see the weight of the job and the imbalanced relationships some fostered on many people. The bigger the company the bigger the gaps a lot of times.

No more bows in this beast. Photo by Mike Hartley

I keep thinking it’s time to get on some schedule around here but I continue to wing it and I’m not upset by the results or feeling. My sleep schedule is still screwed up from many years of night shifts so that does interfere with plans sometimes. But the ride so far is nice.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Laughter and music, a good way to start the day. Grilling up some bacon was a nice addition.
  • We are about to see how educated this country is in the next election.
  • Time to get outside and enjoy the heat.
  • I think we have more kid’s stuff in the house than when we had our own kids.

Okay

Another fresh start to the week. And what a week it will be with the heat. No problem for me, I like it warm. I’m guessing it’s no problem for these guys either, warm weather is more natural for them.

A busy week ahead is planned which is nice. Especially when it includes family and friends. I’ll be catching up with some old friends this weekend also.

An evening to go out and do some detailing on my car now that the yard work is complete for the day. Maybe some carving after that. So let me get the worktable outside and get moving.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Good tanning weather.
  • Waiting to see some baby robbins out back soon.
  • Hard physical work isn’t a bad thing for the body as long as it’s not overdone.
  • We need to look harder at our priorities and think about the whole.

Busy

It’s good to be busy when you’re doing things you enjoy and I’ve been busy doing that. Thursday night with the boys, Friday morning and afternoon with our granddaughter, a dinner downtown, and a concert at Pier 6 in Baltimore for a great show by Little Feat with my better half.

Saturday we finished up with a trip to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore with our daughter and granddaughter. What a run of fun. And now I get a day to savor all the family time I’ve had lately by kicking back and doing little to nothing on Sunday.

Captured a few fellow creatures we share the earth with below on the iPhone. I also took my old Kodak with me but haven’t downloaded those yet. So be prepared to be bored with some more animal shots in the coming days.

Opposing views. So common these days. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll get right to the point. The Zoo is a great place to visit. Families and couples. Saw a few sailors that were visiting from Fleet Week. I didn’t realize the size of this place. I believe it’s 135 acres.

Random Thoughts of the Day.

  • Take advantage of each day.
  • Milwaukee shouldn’t be upset. Trump hates everything besides himself.
  • I believe I’ll enlarge my office. By cleaning out the junk.
  • It’s getting to be too much of an effort to keep in touch with some people.

A nice walk

My better half and I took a walk up some of the Number Nine Trolley Trail in Oella/Catonsville. Then we hiked up and down Old Ellicott City.

Then right saying

When I saw this shot I thought of the saying “birds of a feather flock together.” Nah, that isn’t right. And then I thought “between a rock and a hard place.” Nope not right either. But then I remembered the appropriate saying. “Cardinals appear when loved ones are near.” And that was so true as my better half was side by side looking over the bridge coming into Ellicott City. We were watching the ducks when I saw this beauty land.

I’m not sure you want to meet who lost that feather. Photo by Mike Hartley

If you listen to the TV long enough you know there is a pill or treatment for everything that ails you. But if you listen carefully you will know that the possible side effects are far worse than what is bothering you.

Had a guy pass me on a blind hill this morning. And I was doing 10 mph over the limit. Just one of a rash of bad drivers I’ve encountered the last few days. I’m really glad I don’t have to drive in rush hours anymore on a regular basis.

Yesterday a woman was kind enough to tell me I had my gas door open as I was pulling off. I stopped and closed it. I pulled back around to thank her and noticed she was older and had a cane. I asked if I could help her and she said she had to go in to pay. So I parked, went to her and she gave me her $20 and I took it inside and said it was for the woman on pump 5 in the silver car. She had the pump in hand already so I gave her a wave and returned home. One good turn deserves another. Maybe someone will save me a few steps someday.

Had a good friend hit 80 yesterday. It gave me pause because I don’t think of her close to that age. I have trouble understanding how my friends are getting so old. Same with my kids who seem intent on passing my better half and I. This keeps challenging my forever young theory.

And life goes on.

Night of Inspiration

A free evening to create and challenge myself. Staying focused is tough sometimes. So is staying awake.

One of my favorite blooms from my wife’s garden. I didn’t know what it was so I checked out Google images and found one that looks like this called a Lollypop Asiatic Lily. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m trying to work a few more hours each day on my hobbies, so I put in some time while listening to the NBA Finals game 2. Of course, I overestimated my stamina this past evening and ended up falling asleep at my desk and then recliner.

Feeling good this morning, makes me wonder why. Photo by Mike Hartley

That is OK, rest is important also. But an early start today is underway and with the first light of day about to break, we are off and running.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The burgers and scallops from the grill were good last night.
  • Sometimes when you see angry people and bad things happening to them, it’s just karma catching up. So just be happy.
  • If I can make my grandson laugh a lot today, it will be a great start to the week.
  • If enough educated and well-read people vote, we will be fine. If not, we won’t be.
  • When people are honest with you, life is good.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I like watching the sunrise and sunset at the beach. And if I have to watch it on a webcam, so be it.
  • I have never trusted artificial sweeteners and never will.
  • Alone with my thoughts, that is the only safe place for them.
  • I’m thinking of a kayak and a bicycle this summer.

Sun and Shine

Wasted days and wasted nights. An old song by Freddy Fender. I wasn’t thinking of the song so much as the words. I’ve wasted a few days and nights and I’m working on not letting that happen too often.

Today will not be one of them. Work on the home and yard took a good portion of the day but I did squeeze in a few shots. This squatter (Robin) is not happy with me disturbing the nest they built under my deck. Well, I’m not disturbing the nest but the shed is nearby and they still aren’t comfortable with my presence.

My listening skills are improving. I picked up on the unhappy tone. Photo by Mike Hartley

In addition to laying claim to the deck, he is also expanding to the shed. Guess the territory is being staked out for when the young are born. And given the attitude today that might be soon.

Are you, are you looking at me? Photo by Mike Hartley

Lots of time left tonight to make good use of. So off I go.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I sense a late night of progress ahead.
  • A tootsie pop is a test of patience.
  • I’ve gotten a lot of use out of a battery charger.
  • There it is again, the urge to pick up the pace.
  • Learning is fun when it’s applied to results. Back to the manual I go.

Learning from toddlers

I got the pleasure of my grandson’s time on Tuesday. He so reminds me of the love of life. The joy of discovery, the look of abandon, the focus of a laser, and the determination of a thousand men. At the same time, simple love and compassion are every glance, smile, laugh, or hug and kiss. The limitless creativity of a mind that has no guardrails yet.

When I lay on the floor, he comes over, snuggles right against me, and pretends to sleep for a few seconds before making sure I’m still awake and ready to play again. The discovery of his senses when trying a new food or treat. His eyes get huge when he likes something a lot. I don’t think I’ve lost that reaction after all these years.

I used to think it was me who would rub off and influence my grandchildren. What a great surprise it is that it’s them, who influence and inspire me.

Hump Day Results

I had a somewhat productive Wednesday and at the same time a restful one. I was able to knock out a few chores before the rains came. But I was lazy in my blogging having not finished this piece. Looks like a turnaround day today for productivity.

Lawn Services

You know what I’m sick of. These landscape/mowing companies coming at 7 am with their huge power mowers cutting neighbor’s lawns. Not that they have someone maintaining it, just at the hour these companies come to do it that pisses me off.

And I can’t figure out why the homeowners accept it. The grass is still wet and left in clumps around the yard. I’ve seen them cut in the middle of rain storms. That certainly isn’t good for the grass. They also cut very short which promotes weed growth which the yards are loaded with. Well, the ones without the spray services I see at some.

Such is life, just another thing to roll with.

The listener

I’ve always considered myself a good listener. Who knows, maybe I’m far from it. But I think I’ll try to take it to another level. You can learn a lot more from listening than talking. You can learn the essence of people by listening well. The more I hear the easier it is to know people.

It might change the dynamic in some cases but most of the people I’ve met and know, like talking so have at it. I’ll listen even more.

Don’t mistake my silence for not having an opinion. Don’t mistake my silence for agreement. Don’t mistake my silence for lack of feeling. Don’t mistake my silence for fear of sharing my opinion.

I’m just deciding who I want to respond to. When to reply, and what to say. And in some cases, I might let my fingers do my talking.

I hear you now. Photo by Mike Hartley

The Hands Have IT

A few years back, just before COVID-19, I got my better half a gift of a couples massage and lunch. I had forgotten all about it, till she mentioned earlier this year after retirement. She booked the appointment this past week and it was great.

To be honest I was a bit nervous. I’ve never been to a spa before. I’m ticklish so I was afraid I would bust out laughing. I’m not a prude, I grew up in the late 60s and 70s. My body has seen some airtime.

Well, experience is enlightenment. I’ve now added this to the treat ourselves to list at least once or twice a year. I’m sold on it. My body felt great the rest of the day and into the next. A very comfortable night of sleep and the numbness and tingling in my left arm reduced significantly.

I’ve been getting my better half, my daughter, and, my daughter-in-law gift certificates at Christmas to The Spa at Turf Valley for many years. I should have figured something was up with this.

Don’t worry, I don’t have the means to go all country club on you all. Plus something like this is a special treat and it wouldn’t feel so good if it was being done all the time. Without some hard work I might not appreciate something like this as much.

Good Day

I still enjoy washing and detailing my car as much today, as when I was a young man. It must be love. No, it’s not the same car. So I had to take it for a short spin around the county before rush hour started.

I’m moving to the music this fine Monday, with a smile, and a happy heart. I had some old friends reach out and touch me yesterday. It felt good. Not to mention the day with the family playing and feasting together. Plus the bonus of my son helping me with some heavy yard work.

What a way to get June rolling.

Goodbye May

The beautiful month of May is history. I feel like I’m gaining more appreciation for each day and that feels special. More good times to fit into the memory banks. I’m somewhat happy with the progress of the past month and the effort expended on my hobbies. I have grand expectations for this month of June so I better get moving on them.

The sun is out and there is not a cloud in sight, just a bright blue that is only dotted by a few cardinals and bluejays chasing each other.

I’ve completed the yard work for the day and think I’ll take some photos next.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’d like a cherry snowball today. And I know where to get one.

  • I see some hammock time in my future.
  • Looking forward to some help from my grandchildren tomorrow.

Break

This artist and I took a break today. Not that I don’t feel like putting some time in on it and probably will but the effort will be limited in time. Did a number of home/yard chores and some time with my granddaughter on top of a late night out with the boys last night and this guys is running on empty.

Maybe I’ll put in another hour or two and get an early start on Saturday. Then again some of the music that just came on is kind of inspiring, coupled with the volume increase with the headphones that I had to switch to because the better half is going to bed early.

I’m really working. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m going to start tomorrow remembering an old friend who passed a few years back . A very important friend of my youth. One that helped me during some difficult times. We worked several jobs together, played a lot of ball together, graduated together. He loved the Orioles and I love the Yankees so we always were going back and forth.

I just remember a very warm, thoughtful, caring, smart and fun person who liked to smile and have a good time. I wish you were here to call and wish you a happy birthday. Rest easy Big Pete.

Next I’ll send a note to a very good friend wishing him a happy anniversary. And then it’s hitting the road early for some morning shooting. Maybe even before sunrise. Should be a brisk morning at that hour. The batteries are all charged in the cameras so I’m ready to rock. Till tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The printer is humming tonight.
  • One of my friends is teasing me with shots of a good restaurant in Fenwick Deleware that he’s at.
  • There seems to be a lot of chest-thumping talk going on. I wonder if the Def Leppard song “Too Late for Love” is going to be accurate.
  • I just looked up and saw some wall space I haven’t filled.
  • Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution. A statement song title.

Thursday Motion

Nothing like some sunshine and some inspiration hard driving rock and roll to start the day. And being my health is returning I’m more than fired up to make some fine use of this wonderful Thursday.

The shower is done and an overdue haircut has been had. I pulled the hammock out for a spot to relax later this afternoon. This afternoon was a top-down back road, slow-pace day through Howard County.

Few probably love driving as much as I do. Well, that’s pretty pompous. I’ll rephase I love to drive as many do just for the sake of it. Then there are the few that still love and cherish a manual transmission. I’ve driven one for most of my life and that a good long time. I always will and that means even if they are no longer made in new cars, I’ll buy a used one and fix it up.

An actual organization. Time to shine the go-cart and go through some gears today. Hell YEAH. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The WHO – where bass, drums, guitar, and vocals play lead, all at the same time. Ain’t it great!
  • A busy June ahead. Not a bad thing at all.
  • Paid my respects to my father and mother in-law today.
  • There are too many people behind the wheel that shouldn’t be.

Round and Round

Good feeling about yesterday’s accomplishments but today is another day to go round and round. So I’m boarding the ride again to see what breakthroughs I can make today.

Here I am in a good mood and I make the mistake of reading about the new road construction project that will make traffic around my area a mess for the summer. From mid-June to late August with, the caveat (weather permitting).

This will dump a significant volume of traffic, onto a few single-lane roads, that are already overtaxed. I hope the local body shops and EMS services are ready for this change. I’m practicing my deep breathing in advance to prepare myself.

So that means I better make good use of the next 3 weeks and get out and about. Tomorrow kicks off a great stretch of weather here in the mid-Atlantic. I think a haircut, a nice lunch, and a snowball.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Major League Baseball is going back in time to catch up.
  • I have a good luck charm for my health hanging in my basement.
  • I love old Warner Brothers cartoons.
  • Those who insist on making life difficult will find themselves alone a lot.
  • Greed is one of the many things killing society.

The Day Ahead

I must be feeling better because I’m looking forward to the day ahead again. Not that I don’t every day but the last several have lacked the normal enthusiasm I normally have due to illness. It’s hard to hear the birds singing in the morning like today when you’re blowing your nose or coughing up crap and in pain.

I’m not 100% but better than the last several days so it’s time to start flying high again.

On the passing of Bill Walton

I was reading through some tributes to Bill Walton and came across ones from people I respect, and admire and who knew Bill. I enjoyed watching him play. I enjoyed his commentary and sometimes thought he would get off track during a game but it was always fun listening because you knew you were getting a special perspective and sometimes not just on basketball, but life.

From Kareem Abdul Jabar.  “On the court, Bill was a fierce player, but off the court, he wasn’t happy unless he did everything he could to make everyone around him happy. He was the best of us.”

From Steve Kerr coach of the GSW’s. “His incredible energy, passion, love, and zest for life was never turned off.”

From Jay Bilas basketball commentator and former player – “Walton was about enjoying every minute of his existence, and making your existence around him meaningful and unforgettable. He was a free spirit, with endearing eccentricity. But deep down, he was about finding joy in others. Man, was Bill Walton fun.”

What a beautiful things to say about a friend. I will say thanks for the great effort in your game. Thanks for the entertaining commentary. I think I’ll put on some Grateful Dead this morning.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s time to put on the shoes and head outside now that the sun is up to check for storm damage.
  • Life would be better with a Navigation system to prepare you for the twists and turns it takes.
  • A day of hard work ahead. Hope the body holds up to it.
  • It’s my sincere hope and desire that Donald Trump never steps foot in Arlington Cemetery again. He’s a piece of crap who knows nothing of sacrifice. And he said it himself to General Kelly whose son is buried there.

Memorial Day

Please think about the meaning of this day. Please take a few seconds, or minutes to maybe add a prayer or just say thank you to those who made the greatest sacrifice.

I shouldn’t have turned on the TV this morning being it’s Memorial Day. It’s not that I don’t love the segments memorializing those who gave their lives in defense of their country. It’s that they sometimes play Taps during those segments and that causes some flashbacks for me that are very emotional.

Hearing that at 9 years old for my father was one of those traumatic moments in my life. I purposely only go to Arlington on Sundays so I don’t have to hear that being played at services they do on other days because it triggers something that takes me a good while to regain my composure.

Tomorrow’s date is also the day my mother passed so I’ll be dabbing at my eyes watering early this week.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Whatever virus this is it sure isn’t giving up easily.
  • Not the best day, not the worst day.
  • I don’t know what it is but most professional sports seem to be suffering, from questionable officiating.
  • I watched “The Great Escape” today and thought about that post from one of Trump’s staffers for the Unified Reich. So they say it was a staffer. My father and both uncles didn’t fight that war to see that shit come up again. And many families who paid the ultimate price certainly don’t need that.
  • Larry Hogan, (former governor of Maryland and running for US Senate seat) you are not fooling me with your abortion commercial. Your party is so over the top with pro-life that even if you were serious with your message, your chance of succeeding is 0. I voted for you twice as Gov because I thought you were the best person for the job. Sorry, not the Senate seat.

Ocean

We did an overnight trip to Ocean City this past Wednesday/Thursday. Great weather, small crowds, easy traffic, lots of exercise and good food. You could have the beach to yourself and the ocean as well. A little too chilly for me though in the water. 63 degrees is an ice bath to this guy. I look for at least 70.

I’m sure this weekend looks quite different. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A wonderful lunch with my brothers-in-law and their spouses today.
  • I was going to pull the cover off the go-cart and go for a ride but the weather radar says that might not be the best thought.
  • All I want this weekend is for my health to be back.
  • I’m starting to like Pineapple a lot more.
  • My throat is still sore, I think I’ll have some ice cream. Have a good evening all.

Holiday weekend

Another holiday weekend. A special one honoring our service members who gave their lives for the country. I’d be happy if that was the first thought of everyone in this country. But I doubt it is. And that is wrong.

Arlington National Cemetery. Photo by Mike Hartley

This will be my 4th holiday this year that I’m not working. A benefit of retirement, that is very nice.

Unfortunately, I caught some virus that is kicking my behind so my celebrating might be put off another day or two. It was the reason I didn’t post but a few lines yesterday.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Congrats to the Midshipmen of the US Naval Academy on their graduation today.
  • Pen and ink draw a fine line.
  • I’m sick of this justice system that has rules for the rich and another set for those without money.
  • I bet the old Roman Empire believed they were the greatest and would be around forever. Maybe a lesson this country could consider before we go too far.

Belongings

What personal belonging do you hold most dear? – The Daily Writing prompt inquires.

A scarf of my mothers. My photos and artwork. Multiple small gifts from my children.

I could probably list more but I’m sick as a dog and headed to bed.

Catching my eye

The morning dew on the deck table with the morning sun provided a nice textured background for the accessories my better half added to the table earlier in the week.

This old Kodak camera is about to bite the dust. Photo by Mike Hartley

Lots of things catch my eye. And I’m so glad of that. Photography has taught me to look at life and see things I might have missed if I weren’t looking intently.

It almost looks like concrete instead of water on glass. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I would rather be criticized for being too early instead of too late.
  • Life goes by very quickly.
  • I just noticed at one time I liked putting bumper stickers on some of my file cabinets.
  • It’s not the number of frames I shoot per day, it’s if I can get a good one out of the batch.

Love that sun

It’s baking out today and I love it. The outdoor cushions have vacated the house and are in their proper place on the deck chairs. The umbrella is up over the picnic table once again. Of course, a ton of pollen was removed from the deck first.

The ride has been shined and the county roads have been traveled. And there are always telltale signs you’re on a country road. Like this guy below who just came across a narrow bridge on Rt 144. There is a fair chance I could have driven the Miata under the center of that thing.

I feel like I’m about a month ahead on my tan. Mowing the backyard was a late-day activity. I finally spent a few minutes in the hammock just before dinner.

Might take another cruise this evening. Then again I have a ton of editing and uploading to do. Also, prep for tomorrow’s shooting.

By the way, I was enjoying the drive too much to stop and shoot so these were taken over the windshield as I cruised.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love the sound of my children’s voices.
  • I’m almost to the waist size I was when I got married. And that was a long time ago.
  • Lots of thoughts cross my mind. Fewer cross my lips.
  • Trying to decide what modification I want to make first on the car is difficult.

Shoot to Thrill

Shoot to Thrill, a song title by AC/DC but I was thinking about doing a lot of photography to make my week thrilling. I have parts of a few days to exercise that desire. Today probably won’t be one of them but I’ll still try to squeeze in some fresh frames.

Another photographer captured the moment at the Antietam Battlefield. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope this is the start of turning a new page and making shooting a bigger priority in life. Finding things that speak to me is a good way to feel good. Maybe they will for someone else also.

There is also the benefit of just being out and about catching life while also getting some exercise walking and hiking around the various areas of the great state of Maryland.

And there is no time like the present because I see the sun about to rise soon so a shower and then snapping away I go.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Smile regardless. At a minimum, you will leave them wondering.
  • I feel like duck walking like Angus Young.
  • Some people feel they know you well and you know how little they do.
  • I like music in the morning.

Sunday on the Boards

I like it now that I start Sundays with a smile instead of the trepidation of another workweek. Not that I won’t be busy and have a lot of work planned/scheduled and probably some my better half hasn’t told me about yet. It’s just I’m more comfortable about who I answer to now.

The Daily Writing prompt sucked so here is the one I’m using today.

Love of Motorized Transportation

Today is also the last day of the Cruisin Ocean City event. I love vehicles, cars, and motorcycles but also some trucks. I guess I didn’t pass that gene or love to my kids. Cars are transportation to them.

To me, they are so much more. They are marvelous works of style, sound, and speed. Cars and motorcycles have represented a ton of fun in my life. I love the sensation of driving.

I’ve never owned anything outrageous, a classic, or extremely fast. But I have enjoyed them nonetheless. I enjoy a stick shift and have had one just about all of the 5 decades I’ve been driving.

I don’t know who is happier in this car. Photo by Mike Hartley

My better half humors me by wandering some of the shows with me. I usually go to the local ones alone. But I doubt the kids would have any interest in them.

I love personalizing them. I’ll be starting work on my Miata soon. Who knows, maybe that will be the car one of my grandchildren learn to drive in the future. I did teach both my children to drive a stick though. My guess is they won’t ever buy one though.

Dreaming of being behind the wheel. Photo by Mike Hartley

Speaking of cars, let me go pull the cover off mine so I can go for a spin early tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Whoever said Sunday was a day of rest, forgot to clue me in a long time ago.
  • Actions have consequences. So do inactions.
  • Think I’ll watch a ballgame this evening.
  • Life is easier when people tell you where they stand.

Foundation

Nightcap

Making the best of a few hours this evening. Got some music on to keep my mind from spinning out of control on some troubling issues. Trying to keep my fingers moving and get the creative juices flowing.

Just about finished my shooting plan for tomorrow. Making a few more prints and hanging a few others before I try to catch up on some rest later.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Respect loses another notch each day.
  • Weeds are the heartiest growing things on earth or, at least in my yard.
  • There are many mad people out there and my mission is to avoid as many of them as possible.
  • My screen time was down on the dumbphone. Yeah.
  • Events have converged to remind me of times, I had in my youth. Sort of a full-circle kind of thing. A bit unsettling.

Unexpected Day

I had some high hopes for yesterday. And as life often does, it threw some brushback pitches instead. But with that came clarity in a few areas of my life. It was a day that changed me.

So onto a Friday, I’ll start hopeful again but with a new perspective.

A bit of stretching and exercise to start with. So I’m mixing that in as I write this post. Our granddaughter is here and she is in good spirits.

As I look over at one of my many worktables, there is an old rose sitting on my drawing pad. Should I get that out or continue my photo editing of the last car shoot? The editing wins.

Time to open that new set of charcoals. Photo by Mike Hartley

But I will draw this weekend. I have some energy that I think I can channel into a piece or two with a couple of ideas that just sprang to life.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I find it interesting how oblivious people are in situations.
  • Simplifying my day today.
  • The more I listen to what people are saying the more I worry for all of us.
  • I love having a car cover. I hate having to put it on because that means I can’t use my favorite toy.
  • Finding outlets for negative energy is important in maintaining balance.

Rundown

I feel like I’ve been run into the ground. Just not feeling that hot today. Both mentally and physically it’s been a difficult day. So I just keep picking up the feet and putting them down again and moving on.

Run, or walk, just move. Photo by Mike Hartley

And by doing that I learn to pivot and adjust. Changes can be fairly major and unplanned but that is life. It changes and we adapt. And if you don’t you may be stuck in some unhappy places.

So here is looking forward to a better tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Was just warm enough to have the top down tonight.
  • Sometimes people surprise me.
  • Busy Friday ahead.
  • Take your time on important decisions, bad ones can bite for a long time.
  • Seems like wet and weekends are going together this year.

This is still weird

Only 4 and a half months into retirement and I feel all over the place. The first two months of the transition were very busy with just the logistics of acquiring new medical coverage and finances. It was also loaded with medical/dental and eye appointments.

I’ve been happy with my increased effort in the area of blogging. I’m disappointed I haven’t done a lot more photography. I have picked it up this last month so if I can build on that maybe I was just a slow starter. I haven’t done the woodworking I was hoping to. I’ve also been slack on my drawing production.

Some days I feel I’ve been lazy. Others I’m very productive.

Some days I question why I’m doing certain things like yardwork. Sometimes I enjoy it and other times I feel like I could be spending the time better elsewhere.

Mostly I feel much more relaxed and at peace. But at the same time, I want to accomplish much more this day, week, month, year. So time to slip this transmission into gear and get moving again.

I have to find something else to shoot this weekend. I was going to the Cruisin Car Show, in OC but Mother Nature is not in the mood for it.

Night Owl, is at it again. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I can’t imagine the NBA without the TNT crew.
  • Not the best of days, but not the worst either.
  • People in Costco drive their carts like their cars in the Columbia location.
  • Will streaming services destroy sports?
  • Inspiration is a great thing. When it flows there is so much fulfillment. The more time I spend doing and having my senses open to input in a positive frame of mind, the more creativity is a byproduct.

Tractionless Tuesday

Yesterday felt so good with the top down and the sun shining. A cool rain is falling today and the cover is on the car. No more car pictures today. I know you’re relieved, I was on a roll there.

Back to some nature that visited my back door this week. This guy is my speed. I was too slow to shoot this beautiful red fox in my backyard earlier today. I’ll have to set up before daylight on the deck in some cover to capture him.

I believe this might be a different one than the one that was out front. Photo by Mike Hartley
I walk the yard now before I mow to make sure they aren’t hiding out. Photo by Mike Hartley

Now if I can stay away from the baseball and basketball that is on and get some work done, I might feel like it was a productive day.

The poor weather is the opportunity to catch up on the organization of my photographs. Both print and digital need work as does my photo site. Much editing awaits along with some trashing. And why not now? It looks like the next 7 days have some sketchy weather forecast, so there is no time like the present.

I might have found another image to add to my Arlington collection.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Another strong start to the week. A nice balance of chores and fun, hobbies and rest.
  • I love having the house to myself once in a while, to blow the dust off the speakers.
  • The photo assignment of the night is to find something interesting in the house to photograph.
  • Bacon & Eggs – Steak and Shrimp – Breakfast and leftovers, again nice start to the day.
  • My wife found a wonderful shot of my dad holding me on his lap. Looks like I might have been 4-5 years old.

Out and about

Finish/Start

It was a pretty good week last week. A strong start and finish and a few days in between of relaxing also. I grilled some dinner last night, cleaned up, hit the recliner, and was out cold for the evening.

So I’m up early today working out and ready to start a new week. If you believe the weather people today is a prime day to spend outside so that is where I’ll be.

It’s also the day of the monthly meeting of the Maryland Miata group and I haven’t been to one in some time so I might attend that later. Which means I should wash the ride. So out I go to shine and gas her up.

Antietam Battlefield last week, where should we take it this week? Photo by Mike Hartley

Much respect for all mothers.

I went to Arlington National Cemetery and had a nice conversation updating my parents on their grandchildren and great-grandchildren yesterday. It had been a while so it was kind of tough. I hate having to start by apologizing for the time between my last visit and this one.

Maybe I’ll get back to my 2-3 times a year average to pay respects so I can skip the lame excuse. With the GW Parkway torn up and one lane each way I should find another way in. On an early Sunday morning, the sun was breaking through some pesky clouds. The sounds of planes climbing after liftoff from National Airport.

Birds and squirrels dart between the headstones. There are no burials on Sunday unless something has changed. The sightseeing tram hadn’t started its first run so I had total privacy this morning. It’s a beautiful place and I see why so many come far and wide to visit. I just like the peacefulness of a Sunday morning there.

I took them some Rodedemdrum blooms, mom loved them.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I bet a lot of working stiffs wish they had today off. I’ll make good use of it for you all.
  • The song (Simple Man) always makes me slow down and listen for a bit, and have appreciation.
  • Thinking back I didn’t spend enough time thinking about what was important. And if I did, I didn’t spend enough time doing something about it.
  • People keep slipping further and further apart. I wonder who sold all that wrong-direction lube?

Family day

I was recharged today. Both my children and my grandchildren together. What a treat. Our daughter-in-law’s mother is also visiting. We got online with her other daughter who lives across the country and was having a reveal party for their first child. It was a boy, I guessed wrong.

Talk about a joyous day. Celebrating Mother’s Day (yes early) but together. And another addition to the growing family of cousins for our grandchildren.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom. You were the best. You’re always with us in spirit at family gatherings. I’m not sure who shot this of her holding me.

I’m thinking of my own Mom tonight. I look outside at the beauty of the season and remember how much she liked to garden. One of her many talents. I miss that reassuring hand and smile. I miss the encouragement. l miss the dishes she fixed. I miss her smell. And so many other things.

Time with family and friends for me is a key to happiness.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It must have been a good week because it flew by.
  • Little ones can wear you out.
  • This was a special Mother’s Day weekend for someone close to me that I won’t forget.
  • I should sleep or try to. I need to rise early.

Glasses

I purchased a pair of prescription glasses today. Another week or so and I’ll be practicing with a set of progressive lenses. Maybe I’ll be seeing things more clearly now.

Whoops, wrong glasses, well maybe not. Photo by Mike Hartley

My sight was the first of my senses to start changing with age. Luckily the other 4 senses remain sharp and intact. I hope this helps my shooting abilities. I never grew up using autofocus lenses but I’ve had to adapt.

Each day I’m trying to work a little harder in taking care of this body and mind. Something I should have been a little more conscious of throughout life. But I can’t change what’s in the past, just what’s in front of me.

So let me get up and exercise a bit before I read what the daily writing prompt is and then some more rest.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Walls are just opportunities to hang pictures.
  • Being older, I get tons of medical emails. It’s Mental Health Awareness Month. I am yet to be aware of any so far. But there is some time left in May.
  • If I may borrow a quote from the band The Who – “LONG LIVE ROCK”
  • After months of retirement, I still have trouble sleeping more than 4-5 hours. Good thing I can add a nap during the day if needed, or sleep in shifts.
  • I wonder if anyone saw me working out if they would think that’s a dumbbell picking up a dumbbell.

Century

My father would have been 100 today. I have 7 pictures of him above my desk that I’m looking at. I’m trying to learn more about him, from some mementos my mom kept of his life and service. I wish I knew the man much better.

I was young when he passed and the last few years of his life were difficult with health. I don’t know if I’m like him or different. My mom said that I had some of his traits. I do know I’ve missed him all my life. It’s difficult, even to this day, to open a box of his things.

Dad

I put off a visit this past weekend, it was pretty sloppy outside so I’ll go this coming weekend.

From Dad’s headstone. Photo by Mike Hartley

This picture below is from him on Operation Deep Freeze with the US Navy in the 1955-56 expedition to Antarctica. I believe his role with the medical wing. I know he had his name on some research papers written on that mission and the cold effects on people and evaluating the gear to combat it.

He enlisted in the Navy several months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the start of WWII. He was on a Destroyer in the Pacific in the early 40s. He was in war in Korea but I have found few details of that so far. He was medically discharged from the service after a few decades and that is what my mom said killed him because he loved it so.

So Happy Birthday Dad. I’m sorry you had so few to celebrate.

Box on the porch

We got home from lunch yesterday and had a box on our front porch. But this one at our front door was from nature and what a nice gift. Why he was up on the front porch by the door I don’t know. Went back out a few minutes later and he had motored off.

Thanks for the visit buddy. It brightened our day. There are benefits to living next to the woods sometimes.

Shortbed, Longboard

Anytime I get off to a good Monday start life is pretty good. I had a lot of fun with friends last night, and a great time with my better half during the day. I even squeezed in a nap, because I burned the candle a bit, on both ends over the weekend.

Surf’s not up today, nor the sun. Photo by Mike Hartley

We’re continuing the strong start this Tuesday, despite the morning fog and rain. A quick meeting and then a meal at one of our favorites on Reisterstown Road – Lenny’s Delicatessen – We always go there after a meeting we have up that way periodically. I love their Rueben.

The morning was very fruitful. A lesson I was reminded of today is, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Another good day of exercise and hopefully some shooting this afternoon and evening for new images to edit. So off I go again.

Reminder that Cruisin’ Ocean City is May 16-19, lets hope the weather is nice.

Hole Shot

Do you ever have days when you feel like cutting loose? You know, the kind where you would be at a concert with say 50 Thousand other screaming lunatics. All singing, jumping, both arms in the air, hands clapping and playing in unison with each beat of the band and everyone else there.

Oh, that’s right, everyone has a phone in one hand now. Poor kids, won’t know what it’s like without that attachment at a show. As far as I know you can’t clap, play air guitar or drums with one hand. (Def Leppard drummer being the exception).

I’ve noticed it’s harder to cut loose at this age. I’ve been to a few concerts of older bands and the crowd that used to be on their feet during the show is now planted in their seats for the most part. Maybe a song or two at the shows end, but nowhere near the enthusiasm that was there once.

We all get older and it becomes harder to reach into that well of youthful feelings and let loose in public that we did with abandon as youths. But that is what I feel like doing. Just having that honest gut reaction to things.

Cheer. Photo by Mike Hartley

Body

I’ve picked up quite a tan from last week. I love getting some color during the summer. I don’t know why, it just makes me feel good, about the way I look. Maybe a little tone on the face offsets this greying beard a bit more.

I’m trying my best to do what the body allows me to do. I got more exercise last week than I have in a while. Had to dip into the doctors pill bottle one day but otherwise I’m feeling stronger, more toned than I have in a while. Time to keep it going this week.

Mind

I was making some mistakes in keeping the past in my present and I’ve corrected that. The mind feels good and sharp now. Positive and inspired. Focused and purposeful. Ready to take on the world or read a good book. After a nap.

Well that is the current status. Will worry or depression hit? They do seem to come around far too often.

Opinion

I saw one of those Tesla Cybertrucks on Padonia Road the other day. My first reaction was YUCK. So I went to look up some information about this. I’m not a fan for the following reasons. I don’t like the design/shape, style, lack of color.

It’s HUGE and weighs almost 7 thousand pounds. To me the increased weight of the EV vehicles by thousands of pounds over standard vehicles creates more wear and tear on our highways and more importantly creates more danger for those of us with underweight cars/trucks in accidents.

To support that beast it has 20″ rims with HUGE 35″ tires.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Breakfast might be the best meal of the day unless you have a BLT for lunch and bacon-wrapped shrimp for dinner. mmm bacon
  • I’m getting excited about the coming Maryland Basketball season already.
  • Mid week parties are great.
  • Sometimes you do your best, but you can’t control the reactions or actions of others.

Buzzing along

The land of endless weekends is where I hang my shingle now.

One of my best friends told me the other day, he has decided to work a little longer in his profession before hanging up his nameplate. It’s probably a good decision for him if he doesn’t keep extending it beyond that next point.

I’ve seen so many reactions to this next chapter in their lives. Retirement is a big leap for some. I know 2 that are close, that have to work the rest of their lives. And they certainly don’t want to. And I suspect I’ll know more along the line in that spot.

There are a few others that I think will work till they drop because either they love what they do so much or don’t know what else they would do without it.

I thought retirement would be wonderful, and it is so far. I miss work, but I don’t. I miss some people and challenges but I’m good now without any of it.

In some ways having the decision made for me was a blessing in disguise. There was a cutback at our company and either take a buyout or be laid off. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but I got this one right.

I was entertaining thoughts of part-time work but that is out the window. The last 4 months have allowed me to get to the place I didn’t know I could be in. I’ve experienced the land of endless weekends. And I’m thriving in this role both mentally and physically.

At one time in life, I thought I would have a real problem walking away from work that I loved. I’m so glad that wasn’t the case.

I have a better view now. Photo by Mike Hartley

Some could be because I had a plan, prepared in advance. I talked to others, thought a bit, read on it a bit, and when it came time, bada bing. As the end to so many jokes go, – So far, so good.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • What others think only matters if you think it does.
  • I’ve been far less productive today than possible but I’m just as happy as if I had been.
  • I’m going to try to cook every other day this week.
  • It’s been a day without music. I knew I felt there was something odd about the day. Mistro, queue the loud Rock & Roll, please.

Sunday dread

I woke this morning remembering how unsettling Sundays used to be. Like most people, it signified the end of the weekend. Only that in my case right after Sunday dinner, my workweek started. Which meant being up for 24-27 hours straight.

Sunday I would fit in the last of the family activities and home/yard chores into the morning and afternoon. Dinner and then work overnight till 6 or 7 am Monday. That was the beginning of my workweek.

For the last decade, I would pull an all-nighter after being up all day to flip back into night shift mode for the rest of the week. Then on Thursday at 7 am when my workweek would end I’d sleep for 3-4 hours in the morning after work. Stay up till 11 pm, sleep, and wake up the next morning, to get back into a day mode for the weekend with family and friends.

Because I quickly discovered nobody would be around to interact with me if I stayed on a night shift schedule throughout the weekend.

When I started that schedule, I was a bit younger, but in the last years, it took a heavy toll. But I knew I had to hold on to get where we wanted to be.

So here I am retired now and Sundays have returned to a normal schedule. When I get tired this evening I can go to sleep instead of war trying to flip my body and brain into some twisted switch to nocturnal existence.

Life is good again.

Hold on. Photo by Mike Hartley

A Day for Ducks

What a moist day outside. I’m sure this guy below enjoyed the wet weather today. I did not and I’m not looking forward to a repeat tomorrow. While a glint of sunshine hit this picture none was present today.

This weather makes me so tired. I’m sitting here yawning and it’s just past 8 pm. A week of good physical labor also contributes to this feeling of depleted energy levels.

I’m going to have to look for a second wind here soon. While my best accomplishment was getting quality time with family today, I would still like to get a few hours in on the hobbies.

Eating baby back ribs is a real treat for me. I’ve been going to the Corner Stable on York Road for years and had a wonderful meal there this afternoon with my son. I got a full rack with fries and coleslaw. They were tender as always and tasty with their original sauce.

I was telling my son I’m going to get a smoker this spring and try some myself. Now that I have the time for some slow cooking, I hope I can get the taste and tenderness that make me want to stay home and cook them all the time. And then invite family and friends.

It’s time to give my better half a break on Sunday meals. She usually cooks something special on Sundays, so maybe I’ll suggest, that I cook tomorrow instead of her.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Some work on portraiture is in store tonight.
  • I never should have come home and sat down in that recliner.
  • Please be careful, ticks are out already this season.
  • I have a lifetime of memories, to still make.
  • My body feels like it’s reverting back, to up all night, sleep all day.

Winding down, maybe not

A day full of chores and tasks. It feels good to have a few more completed. With the weather turning wet the focus will shift indoors.

Some things didn’t work out today as I hoped for personally, but that’s life. Off to the next adventure I go.

Another home for sale in the neighborhood. 2nd one in 3 weeks. A couple of nice neighbors are leaving the hood. It’s changed so much in the close to 4 decades we have been here. It’s a great and crazy place at the same time. I’ll go into that another day.

I’m holding my own against Mother Nature. She has gotten a strong start but so did I. The property is looking good.

A day’s end. Looks like we won’t be seeing that orange glow for a while. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope to attend two car events this month, one local at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn and the Spring show in Ocean City. I was thinking about a few days in OC but a scheduling conflict will make that a day trip.

This month I hope to shift my walking outside. I’ve already started that a bit in the last week, it will get me photographing more. Speaking of that I got to find a good day to get a few more shots of the old Columbia Flier/Patuxent Publishing Building before it’s torn down.

I imagine a piece of me will die that day just as it did when the old Washington Post building on 15th Street was demolished. Between the 2 locations, I spent many decades, in those homes away from home.

The memories are never erased no matter if the physical structures are gone. There is a good chance we might be able to pull off another impromptu meeting/party/reunion/memorial/thank you before it is laid to rest. I’ll have to call one of my best friends tonight and get that in motion for next month.

For a second, I was mad at myself for not shooting anything new today. And then I realized, I have 3 hours left this day. So let me get to work. Rest well all.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Genuine hugs from your children are special.
  • I feel like treating myself tomorrow to a good meal.
  • Looking like, I’ll have to get the sweatsuits out for the next two days.
  • My lungs have a salt air deficiency.

Searching

We are all searching. For many different things and reasons. It’s sometimes good to know what you are searching for, it makes it easier to find. You can search high and low, in and out. Make sure to search for the right and important things in life. Tip, most of them aren’t monetary.

Stepping into life

With a high of about 90 degrees today I soaked in the heat and sun in preparation for this weekend’s cooldown.

But it’s a day to savor for many reasons. One is because each day is special. It might be filled with problems, challenges, and frustrations or overflowing with joy, fun, and solutions.

No hesitation in that first step. Photo by Mike Hartley

It could be a simple day, filled with chores, music, a cruise with the top down, and some photography.

I may gather with friends for dinner and a refreshing beverage.

3 glasses, 3 friends tonight

It could be a momentous day. All I need to do is try.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The evenings of restless sleep and short cycles are returning, unfortunately. I didn’t dream it would be this hard to escape the many years of night shifts.
  • I have to do some planning for my granddaughter’s visit tomorrow. My hope is she looks back at these times here as some of the happiest days.
  • I sense a possible night cruising this evening.
  • Topped yesterday with today. I hope to do the same tomorrow.

What can I unearth today

I might have to do some digging today, to see what I might turn up.

More construction at Turf Valley yesterday. Photo by Mike Hartley

Will this be the day I capture a special image? Will it be the day I pick up a new book? Will it be the day the Dremel tool comes alive? Will it be the day I resume work on a book I’m writing?

We were going to head to the Antietam Battlefield today but it’s going to be baking and I’d rather choose a nice spring day in the next week or two to wander outside a good bit.

So I’ll get the cameras out for the local flavor again and see what I can bring to this blog this afternoon and evening. Unless I let myself be consumed with chores.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Many of my neighbor’s landscaping companies all like to start around 7 or 8 am. Because I always hear those big mowers crank up like this morning at 7:30 am. I always wondered if the adage of not cutting grass early in the day was true so I Googled it as any good idiot does nowadays and they say = “Early morning (6 – 8 a.m.) is not recommended for mowing This is one of the worst times to mow. Your lawn will still be wet from the morning dew which will make it messy and hard on your mower. Mowing wet grass also will tear it rather than cut it, which is an open invitation to disease and fungus”
  • Some people have the most infectious smile and laugh. I’m glad I know a lot of them.
  • I’ve got to photograph a few things for prosperity. Like the peel-off badges, I had for the day before my son was born. Or the notes the kids would write me when they were young. I also have a few old postcards with some messages from my dad that are also fading.
  • I learned another new thing about my camera today.
  • Let me get out of this chair and get to caulking the front porch.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Smiles are a good cover.
  • There was a lot of beauty out today. I didn’t have the time to stop and capture some of it but tomorrow is another day.
  • The search for that happy place continues.
  • It was one of those days I had to remind myself how lucky and blessed I am.

Flaming Finish

I just realized we finished the month of April. I feel good and disappointed at the same time. I was less balanced that month. Things are either going right or wrong.

Great smile. Photo by Mike Hartley

April had far more productive days than not. However, I’m still way behind where I thought I could be after the first 4 months of the year in many aspects of life. I can’t fix the past, so changes going forward. And today looks like a good day to start.

Attempt 3 blog posts a day for May. I pulled that off in April a few times but not consistently. Improve and organize content better for each post.

My physical workouts in April improved, but I need to increase reps and steps this month.

I took a step back in dealing with troubles in April and didn’t bounce back from them like I know I can.

I picked up my shooting but need to get the cameras out every day, without fail if I’m to improve. And get that pastel and charcoal in my hand each day and create.

Time to get out of this chair and into another one. Have a good morning all.

Morning observations

  • The first order of business is to flip the calendars.
  • Glad I put the cover on the car because it rained well last night.
  • The first Coke of the day always tastes best.
  • I like rising early, around 4 am.
  • I have a good portion of the day to make of it what I can. Will I choose chores or fun?
  • May is an emotional month for me.

Old school

As I opened my morning Coca-Cola this morning and waited for the sun to rise while knocking out the morning reply to the daily writing prompt I ran across this image which seemed fitting to kick off the day. I shot it a little before sunrise off a side street in Ocean City. It’s an old Dumsers Dairyland sign.

Side streets have a history. Photo by Mike Hartley

Another warm day ahead and I’m headed outside with some power tools again. Yep, Mother Nature and I are in another 15-rounder. I’m a little sore from yesterday’s match but still standing.

Wow, time flies. It’s noon now and a few hours of work is already in the books. Again I’m dirty and tired. Another hour or two and then I’m shutting the chore whore activities down.

Observation

Many people think Karma isn’t watching. Don’t worry, we’re sending him videos.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Anyone for a conga line? I don’t care that it’s a Tuesday.
  • I’m learning some good techniques with the power washer.
  • My home gets more special each day.
  • I believe I’ll treat myself to a rack of ribs this weekend.
  • Now that I’m retired most of the miles I drive are more enjoyable.

Another Brick in the Wall

Sorry, I’m on a music bent lately. And I just happened to be editing this image when some Pink Floyd came on. Music, the mortar of life.

The headphones are unplugged and the external speakers are enabled again. Let there be music all around.

After several hours with the pressure washer gun in my hand, the body is giving out. A ride and maybe a few minutes in the hammock before sundown. I’ll do the side deck tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Must be throwback Monday. There are Hostess Orange Cupcakes in the pantry.
  • I must be relaxing more because I catch myself dancing a bit here and there.
  • A clean car feels faster.
  • Would you consider me confused if I listened to country, blues, jazz, soul, rock, and funk today?
  • I’ve gotten a lot of color the last two days of sun worshiping.

Working

Funny thing, it doesn’t seem like the start of the workweek. But it is for many that I still have regular contact with. I now look at life, day to day, instead of the previous workweek/weekend schedule.

Roadwork in Frederick MD. Photo by Mike Hartley

No end, or start, just days that I get to make of what I choose. At least till my better half rises or after she crashes. And even though it might look like work to many it’s just me having fun. Writing, photographing, drawing, carving, working on the home, or cutting our yard.

This old man washing and detailing his ride (Miata) isn’t cheap, I like doing that work. It reminds me of being young. The pride I took in polishing, motor, paint, and chrome.

It’s not that I retired young, I didn’t. I contemplated working till 70. But given my past health history, I jumped when I had the opportunity.

A couple of relatives will be retiring this year. It will be a year or two before my good friends follow me. So I will have more company soon.

I saw a recent AARP article headline that if I recall correctly said 1 in 4 seniors plan on working the rest of their life. Pew Research says 9% of those 75 and older are still working. That is way up from the 4% in 1987. And these numbers will continue to grow would be my guess.

I know a couple of people I love in situations where they will end up working the rest of their lives and not by choice. I also know some who may choose to work out of their desire or fear of having nothing to do in retirement.

I hope I can stay retired from working for someone other than myself. Well, other than doing some volunteer work in the future. Time will tell.

For those of you rising, risen, on their way, or already at your workstation, I salute you. Have a Great Day, regardless of that asshole customer, boss or coworker.

And for those of you in school for an education, suck it up, enjoy it. Work is the real bitch. And that is for those of us who love what we do.

What retirement brings me are passions, not work.

Pop

I feel like popping off this week. It’s been a blah weekend so it’s time to cut loose.

I’m ready for a stellar Monday. Record heat will set me free. I spent the day today working so tomorrow is a fun day.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Half the car is waxed. Ran out of daylight.
  • The days I need two showers are usually very productive.
  • Not happy this evening. Think I’ll crash early.
  • I’m puzzled by people. But that is what makes life interesting.

In between

It’s a blooming good day. I was in between cutting the yard, doing the trimming, weeding and ant killing and saw this. Back to work for a little while longer so I can enjoy tonight and tomorrow.

I got my hammock out today. Now I just have to find a few minutes to get into it. Maybe after dinner tonight.

Anytime I need a calming song to get me on track again, I listen to Simple Man from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Looking up

After I took this I walked around the deck and said that would be the first thing I powerwash this week.

Before I get to the fun of the day, the chores need to be done. That must be some throwback to the way I was raised. So I’ll return this afternoon, a bit dusty and dirty till my second shower of the day.

Overcast start and finish

The lack of my morning inspirational sunrise slowed my positive start. So I exercised, spoke to a few friends, and edited images. A trip to the hardware store and a stop for lunch at Canopy, I thought I’d come alive.

But that wasn’t the case, the combination of a good meal, a cool, cloudy, and rainy afternoon put me to sleep in the recliner. So really nobody has been at the helm all day. This ship has been cruising on autopilot. And even though my eyes are open, and I’m sitting at the computer, I’m still getting out of a fog bank.

Nice Wood. Photo by Mike Hartley

Maybe the brain and body are on a secret mission to allow me the reserves to enjoy tomorrow. Sun and the upper 80s and I’ll be outside from dawn till dusk, and beyond. At least I hope that is the case.

Sleep always makes me feel like I’m wasting opportunities. I used to think it was just the job but now I feel it still, being retired. That need, to utilize each moment better. That I failed to do more because I rested. I woke feeling that this afternoon after the nap.

Well then, let me engage the transmission from the mind to the rest of the body and make the rest of the day a glorious one. That sounded rather religious, I didn’t mean it that way.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Tomorrow is a wax-on and wax-off day. Yep, I’m going to put a shine on the go-cart.
  • It’s 8:30 pm and I feel like I’m just getting going.
  • I’ve used over a million words and used 5500, of my photos in this blog in 10 years. I’ll make that seem like nothing 10 years from now.
  • I believe I can fit in a couple more miles on the treadmill tonight during the Lakers game.
  • Warm temps, warm roads, warm tires, a thrill a minute.

Real Ones

What are your favorite emojis? – So ask the Daily Writing prompt.

I’m into real emotions, not emojis. Try living life outside that smartphone or computer. There isn’t an emoji for what I feel when I enter Arlington National Cemetery. There isn’t an emoji for the thankful feeling or how much I love my wife and children.

There isn’t an emoji for the level of hell I’ve raised with friends and how much fun we have had. There isn’t an emoji for something beautiful I see in nature. There isn’t an emoji for how much I enjoy eating Maryland crabs this summer.

There isn’t an emoji for what I feel when I dance or play air guitar. I haven’t seen an emoji that comes close to pulling a big fish into the boat way out at sea. There isn’t an emoji for the feeling of a wheelie on a motorcycle or a 145 mph speed run.

There isn’t an emoji for being told you have cancer that I’ve seen. There isn’t an emoji for going around a corner on a warm sunny day with the top down in the Miata or the motorcycle or pulling onto Ocean Highway and smelling the salt air and warm breeze.

I could go on with other great and brutal emotions, but EMOJI’s don’t hold a candle to the real thing. Try creating your own. I do it with pictures.

This question sucks (sorry to complain writing prompt person). I don’t use them much at all and I rarely pay attention to them. I’m old school if you haven’t noticed.

Hey, if you are happy about something tell me about it, I’d love to hear the details. If you’re sad and need support pick up the phone and tell me to come over. I’m into communication, not guessing.

My apologies for the long rant. Short answer below.

I use the heart occasionally when texting my children or wife a bit. But I’m using the words, “I love you” to my wife and children in addition to that heart. Maybe sports-themed one or two to my son, I can’t remember.

Moon and Mast

I’m thinking about going out and doing a little night shooting but the body is fighting that idea. Time will tell. Looks like the adage Mind over Matter will get a test tonight.

Moon and Mast from the harbor near Chesapeake Beach. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was a good fitness day. Both some aerobic and weight sessions. A short cruise in the go-cart and a cherry snowball from the Woodstock Snowball Stand.

I think I’ll practice some sports photography and shoot some of the little league games, where my kids used to play and I used to coach a bit.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel like dancing.
  • I feel like photographing.
  • I feel like pizza.
  • I feel like carving.
  • My car is the cleanest it’s been in a few years. I like detailing.

Here comes the HEAT

I love the heat, so the predicted sudden increase in temps starting Sunday does me just fine. I will spend as much time in it as I can. It might even be the first time the flip flops come out this year.

But lots of people will be scrambling inside for the AC. Some might even look for inside shade. I have found the place for you below.

From Frederick Maryland. Photo by Mike Hartley

I will have to remember I’m not a youngster when I’m out and about in the heat not to overdo it. That is one of the biggest adjustments of getting older. Retraining your mind to take it slower on many things you used to just jump through, like flights of steps. I don’t break out into a full sprint anymore without stretching a bit. Using your knees to lift or getting help with a real heavy load instead of taking it yourself. That I can’t work hard outside for 8-10 hours without taking a break.

And others like watching out for too much sun on the skin or nasty ticks. Staying off ladders and the roof as much as possible. Being careful with the power tools and on those steep hills out back.

Ah, what the hell, where are my gloves. Out I go to do battle with Mother Nature. Have a good day and I’ll try to check in later if I haven’t hurt myself and hopefully fit in a few minutes with some fun.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • One would think a Supreme Court would have supreme judgment. One might be thinking wrong.
  • It’s good to get a hug each day. More than one is great. When it’s a long one, you hit the trifecta.
  • I’ve been better at carving out productive time this week.
  • I almost gave up on a pastel piece, but it’s starting to take shape.
  • I spent a wonderful evening with one of my best friends, a brother from another mother on his birthday last night.

Slow waking day

Good morning

I’m having trouble getting moving this morning. Both the body and mind are stuck in 1st gear. I’m up, showered, and been out and back from a haircut, but I’m sore as hell and the mind isn’t clicking with a lick of creativity yet. Unusual, because mornings I wake up motivated, not having an issue finding my grove.

Looking for my wave this morning. Photo by Mike Hartley

I did a little drawing last night and hope to start another piece today. Practice makes perfect. Or in my case better than the last attempt.

I had hoped for a bit of sun and some shooting but clouds are forecast all day. So maybe a little yard work first to get the blood flowing and the body limbered up. Nope, nix that idea, cold outside.

Take a Seat

Where to sit isn’t always clear. There are no assigned seats in life. Maybe a good seat up front looks good till you sit in it and find it broken. Or that seat in the nosebleed section you thought was the worst is the one that gives you the best perspective on life.

Porch at Tidewater Inn. Photo by Mike Hartley

Do you look for a comfortable seat or one that helps your posture? Do you like a bucket or bench seat in the car? Maybe a heated seat in a recliner or car? How about a racing seat with a 5-point harness?

I’ve chosen a seat in front of the computer for a bit. Next a higher chair at the drawing table. And it’s getting close to lunchtime but I don’t want to take a seat in the kitchen. The less time there, the easier it is to keep a good senior shape.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There have been few times more important in history than what we are experiencing now.
  • On the lighter side, it’s one of my best friend’s birthdays so a celebration will break loose some time.
  • He also made a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. So I contributed because it’s a good cause I normally contribute to.
  • It’s a bonus day. I get to see both my daughter and granddaughter for a few minutes.

Wicked Wednesday

It’s been a great day. I had a few free hours for some work on the sketchpad. That was bookended by chores, like mowing and home chores.

I can still kick ass with a push mower. But I do like the rider. Thankfully I can cut 2/3 of the yard with that trusty 26-year-old John Deere. Then again it’s early in the season and still cool out. We will see how this senior body is holding up in August pushing that hilly backyard.

All kinds of things are going well to start the week off. Mother Nature did her part and provided beautiful sunshine for the 2 days. Today wasn’t the best but there were breaks in the clouds.

My better half had a busy day so I had the house to myself for a few hours. We all know that means the dust gets blown off the speakers and any other surface in the house. Queue the old classic rock.

Toddler Tuesday

Satisfaction after a wonderful Tuesday with my grandson. When he gets up in my lap and sits contently it makes me feel good. This bundle of energy is hardly still unless he is asleep and that is decreasing also. So when he chooses me to sit on for a few minutes it’s like I’ve won a medal.

I love making him laugh. And the pure joy when he realized I would share my tootsie pop with him was beyond happiness for both of us.

He is so into airplanes now. I’m going to have to get him one. Let me clarify, he is just short of 2. A toy plane. I bet he would like an airshow. Oh, the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles would also be good.

Homeowner mowed?

I wonder how many homeowners in this county still cut their property. From the number of yard services running around the roads and neighborhoods, it’s not too many. I think 3 of us in this neighborhood cut our own out of maybe 20 homes.

Sneakers and exercise

I started to break in a new pair of sneakers with a few miles around town and on the treadmill. My first pair of Under Armor. Fairly, comfortable so far.

A little time with the weights trying to put some tone back in the muscles. It’s a good incentive to step away from the computer for a few minutes. Seeing some results already.

Details, details

Detailing my car is becoming part of my weekly routine. It brings back memories of when I was a bit of a car nut as a youth and kept the ride shining.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It feels like there’s something in the air. Oh yeah, pollen.
  • Music takes away the pain, till the song stops.
  • I’m starting to experiment with a new medium. If successful it might turn into a new large.
  • It’s getting warmer and warmer and I’m wearing less and less and smiling more and more.

FredBrick

The town of Frederick Maryland is a great place to visit. Some more images from this past Monday.

There was a store there called Brick and Mortar Mercantile that we enjoyed. I’m also a fan of The Candy Kitchen on N. Market St.

Deeper Reflection

Having more time to reflect is a nice perk. Avoiding, mistakes of the past, and taking advantage of knowledge gained along the way. Knowing the important things are love and connections. Helping enrich the lives of those close and sometimes perfect strangers.

Carroll Creek Park. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m focusing better on what I’m trying to accomplish. Inspired more each day to create and produce. I look forward to getting up each day like never before. An appreciation for all I’ve been given, in length of time and opportunities.

Reflection of the above shot. Photo by Mike Hartley

So it’s a great start to a Tuesday morning. One that I won’t waste. I don’t want to miss an interaction, a smile, a laugh, a tear, or a picture.

I must look like a child when I’m shooting, like watching a young one discover. I try to think about that when I’m photographing. I’m wandering, looking in all directions, stopping suddenly when something catches my interest or I hear a sound. I can look at something that nobody else sees anything to look at but I see a spaceship in how those branches in the tree merge. I look at the sky and see a pattern in the clouds or a bird. And down at my feet for no specific reason and, walk forward at the same time. I can park myself in a spot taking in everything around me or run forward at full speed towards the screening fire engine pulling out of the station.

Not as fast as I used to be, I didn’t catch it leaving. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • That bright sky this morning is hiding a deceptively cold start.
  • You can sleep in a recliner. But you will regret it.
  • I’m going to pit my smarts against a young child today. The outcome is in doubt.
  • Don’t you hate remembering something you needed to do a week ago and still not having the time to get to it immediately?
