Early workouts

I’m finding one of my keys to exercise is to do it early. I’ve been able to get most of my workout in before noon recently. I’ll be walking around shooting today and that will help put a few more miles on the body. A friend who is an avid walker is getting geared up for the outdoor season. I’ll have to venture over the northern Maryland border, pay him a visit and see if I can keep up with him.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I never thought I would be applaud so much by people that I thought had integrity.
  • Maybe I can capture that photograph that changes the world today.
  • When I roll my neck this morning it sounds like a truck going down a gravel road.
  • I was tired of winter before I looked at this weeks forecast of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow.

Seeing

Started the day at the optometrist early yesterday morning. All is well, except for the expected age related issues. The new glasses I got last year are still good, and I’ll see the good doctor again next year.

I love early appointments, no waiting usually, back home in a blink of an eye. A little (very little) vision humor.

Are you giving me the eye? Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m developing another type of seeing. I feel I know people much better now. Of course that comes with some risks also.

Taking a few days to pause and absorb the tragedy at National Airport. That ballet we do in the air is usually a spectacle of beauty, a choreographed dance between partners in the air and on the ground. That was not that case last night.

A day the rest of us will take for granted next year, will be the first of many painful anniversaries of this tragedy for many families. I hope they can get through the grief and remember the love and best of the ones lost.

And yes, who is the one person who could make something like this worse. Yep you guessed it.

I know where I’ll be spending one spring day in another month or two, in St. Michaels Maryland. On one of the many paths and small streets with beautiful homes, bed and breakfast, restaurants and shops. Brewery/Winery and ice cream shops.

I believe this is along Cherry St. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • If you thought you faced tough decisions before, just wait.
  • My goal is to volunteer this month. Not sure at what yet, but getting a start.
  • Having a backyard that goes into the woods allows the grandkids to have experiences they don’t see at home. It’s one of the first things my grandson does, is grab the stool and look out the back bay window for deer, squirrels, groundhogs, foxes.
  • Less TV, more enjoyment

Firing Out

I wonder if I should borrow this machine for the coming weekend, because we may set the place afire. Kicked it off last night with a University of Maryland basketball victory. The party continues today with a slight pause to play with my grandson tomorrow morning.

I believe this beauty is from the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Department. I caught it posting up in the Ocean City inlet lot a few years ago. Photo by Mike Hartley

Saturday and Sunday are full of hobby plans and possibilities. I do know the Miata will hit the road for our club meet.

The week has been a success because of one thing. A family member finally reached out for the first time in a while. I’m glad, they have had a tough life. A little communication to start and hopefully continue. All you can do is hope.

I’m giving the benefit of the doubt at all times because I haven’t suffered the pain/trama they have. I also try not to take them stepping away unexplained for short or long term periods personally. That is difficult sometimes.

I’m not ignoring the recent events. Just trying to find words.

Looking

I’m looking for that spark this morning. I’ve managed to knock out a few tasks already, made some prints for my granddaughter and did some writing. I’ll be heading outside this morning to capture some fresh images on the camera.

The Terps are playing Wisconsin tonight so I’ll be watching that and “engineering them on to victory” as our group says. The students are back so the Xfinity Center should be rocking. That red you see in this photo will be replace by the Gold Rush tonight.

That Gold crowd shot always looks good on tv. I’ll be attending a game later this season with my son.

Food Thoughts

I’m looking forward to grilling season again. I didn’t do well on my goal to cook a lot more last year but the opportunity is here again for me to take advantage of. And each time I grill, I’m going to try to incorporate onions, peppers, zucchini, squash, mushrooms and corn. Or at least a few of those depending on the meat or seafood.

I’d like to try some some grilled grouper this year. I’ve never tried lobster on the grill either. Maybe some mahi mahi, for some tacos. And of course from the great state of Maryland, the fresh rockfish from the Chesapeake Bay.

Now I’m hungry. Too early to think about lunch so I’ll go get some exercise till it’s time. Have a good morning all.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The first decent temperature day we get in a long time and at the same time possible 50mph wind gusts.
  • I can see the grass again. The birds and deer are tearing those melted spots up this morning.
  • I love Eddie Van Halen guitar intro’s to their songs.
  • An afternoon of paperwork ahead. Hey, something has to balance out the good times I have.

Bike and Stuff

I was editing some photos and came across this shot I was just about to trash and remembered taking it because it was a unique bike rack I found I Berlin Maryland on a visit there. Riding a bike is a lot of fun. Good exercise but a great way to see things.

We usually ride bikes at the beach and some at my friends bay home on Kent Island. But I don’t own my own bike yet and I think I’ll change that this year. When it warms some I think I’ll go pick one out. And maybe look at a bike rack for the car so I can take it with me.

Weather

Finally, a slight break from that frozen grip of winter. I think I’ll start to build our home and emergency preparedness in the coming two years. We are already going to upgrade our less than adequate attic insulation.

Our gutters and roof are in good shape but our doors and windows could use some work. WInds in this area seem to be more prevalent than in the past. So some trees that are in falling distance of the house on my property might get a trimming or removal. We have two beautiful oaks out front that have been struggling the last two years. At least I can save those for firewood.

I’m going to work on a few drainage issues also. Some neighbor made some changes that is causing excessive runoff into my lower back yard along the property line. I’ll get some stone and build the gully back up and make it so it won’t cause washouts like it does now.

Then it’s on to power issues later this year. I have a small generator but it’s not tied into our panel so our well pump won’t run without power which means in addition to lights we have no water. So it might be time to look into something beefier and tied in.

I could go on but I’m seeing more extremes in weather so I’m going to do our best to prepare.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and happy Sunday evening.

It’s almost dinnertime here so I’ll leave you with a family dining outside on a summer afternoon in Berlin Maryland. By the way if your there the Atlantic Hotel and Rayne’s Reef are great. I think we will pay this town another visit this year. Maybe their Peach Festival.

There is nothing, that beats a family meal together. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I guess I’m getting older. Scammers are sending me more texts, emails and phone calls.
  • Sleep is something your eyelids need.
  • I have been a bit slack this month in keeping up with some of my favorite blogs.
  • Spending time with family, is a good way to get my priorities right again.
  • Unfortunately I’m a history buff, and that is why recent events and words make me fearful for my children and grandchildrens

Everyone starts somewhere

Caught this lad early one morning skimboarding (I think it’s called that) on the beach in Ocean City last summer. I feel like I started over a few times this past year and again this new year. Hey, I’ll start a hundred times a year if it results in more progress.

It’s never too early to start practice. Photo by Mike Hartley

So we begin a very busy weekend early this morning. Preparing for a celebrations, sleepovers and sports that will leave me winded by Monday evening. Crap, I just looked at the calendar for the coming week and every weekday is booked with something.

That is okay with me, I need a little interaction. I’m looking forward to some laughs, playing with grandchildren, watching the Terps with a best friend and the easiest doctor’s appointment of them all, the eye doctor (optician) for a check up from the nose up. Along with several other appointments and tasks.

No doctors appointment is really easy. My eyesight has been suffering for over a decade now. The glasses I got last year seem to still be perfect so I hope I haven’t gotten any worse.

In some ways this has been a very productive week. It just hasn’t shown itself here and that feels strange but I’ll take it as a win. And here is another start to a better blog.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A very special day for a very special person.
  • Searching for places to go is fun. Going to them is better.
  • You always remember your parents on their birthdays, if they are here or not.
  • I just can’t get the chill out of the house this morning.
  • I see protecting all citizens in known danger is out the window.

Travel beckons

I’m pulling together a list of travel ideas for future consideration. And being the new year is here I’m ready to pursue those locations. When I saw the picture of this spot it really got me itching to get away. This picture is nothing like the rain, sleet and snow coming down from cloud covered skies this past weekend.

That call of the ocean, one of my favorite spots in the state of Maryland is the eastern shore be it the bay or ocean. It’s only mid January and I can hear that whisper “where are you, Mike?”

We have stayed here a few times but prices have risen, as with everything.

I could easily live at the beach, even year-round, only the love of my children and grandchildren keeps me rooted in Howard County. Along with a few very close friends.

Some might think I am living at the beach because I do plan on beating a path back and forth quite a bit from April till October.

I’m sitting here envisioning it because I’m chomping at the bit and drawing on my reserve of memories of hot summer days with the top down and that smell of the salt air as I cross the bridge into town.

Flying in

The first nice day we get this year, I’m going to head to Ocean City for some sun, sand, and ice cream sodas. One of my best friends said that is a long drive for a day trip. It’s a little less than 3 hours each way so it’s no big deal for me.

Hell, I used to spend a minimum of 2 1/2 hours a day, getting back and forth from work on a good day. Plus, I love to drive that car with the top down. And if I get tired on the way home, I have some old friends in Easton that I could stop and see and recharge if needed. For me, not the car. You won’t catch me driving an EV.

This cold weather leaves me depressed. The beach draws me like a magnet and always has. I love photographing there and have a big series of images on one of my basement walls. I don’t mind going in the offseason at all but I want it to be comfortable enough to be outside. And that day looks to be a while off.

Actually, the first trip will probably be with my better half. We do need to get away for a day or two soon. The next two weeks are just too cold to be out at the ocean. And we are pretty busy anyway. Maybe the next month or two. Better yet a destination closer near by with some indoor activities.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love sports. I get wrapped up in my favorite teams. I also remind myself it’s just a game.
  • Two local teams in the NFL playoffs, NICE.
  • Don’t think, DO
  • More shoveling tomorrow. oh boy.

White stuff

It’s hard to replicate all the muscles used in snow shoveling. A few are sore, most are doing okay but we have another round to go. I should be finished snowing by 11pm and I’ll go out and do the final clean of cars, driveway and walks. Till then some dinner and more rest.

I love it when school is cancelled for snow days. That means my daughter and daughter in-law who are teachers get a break and get to spend the time with their own children. Days they can just focus on each other and fun.

The beach is snowed in real well this evening looking at some of the Ocean City Webcams. So I thought I’d run a picture I took on a warmer day with what looked like a family fishing together one morning. I’d rather be standing in the white stuff they are than snow.

Random Thoughts of the Evening

  • Sad day in our countries history.
  • Feeling refreshed after that afternoon nap.
  • Cutting down on my screen time on my phone is a priority. I want to keep well less than an hour a day.
  • I get along with myself much better than I did as a youth.

In the air

You can feel the coming snow in the air. Later tonight as I’m shoveling, I’ll be feeling it for real. Been a long time since I’ve had that youthful feeling in snow. If it’s deep enough, I’ll go for making a snow angel. The snowboard of my sons and the disk will stay in the shed.

Actually, I’m looking forward to being out in it early this morning. I love starting the day anywhere from 2-4 am. This seems to be the sweet spot my body and mind like to start. It isn’t the same cycle other family or friends are on but I’ve been marching to others schedules for decades and now I can make my own.

But it will be good timing for the snow. If it starts around 10 about half of it will be down by 3 or 4am and I’ll be out with the shovel. I’ll probably be helping an elderly neighbor or two later in the day so at least I’ll have mine done early and some time to rest and catch my breath.

I saw these geese coming in for a landing to join their friends already on the pond. The clouds are rolling in and soon all air traffic will take a pause as the storm goes by.

Landing gears please. The Woodstock Airport is still open. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Always depressing taking the tree out after the holidays.
  • I’m having to listen to the Maryland basketball game on the radio because its being streamed.
  • There are some things that leave lasting impressions in life. Most of them I smile about, some not.
  • Felt good to exceed my exercise goal today.
  • Looking for some positive energy. I’m just not working hard enough for it yet today.

Time

I lost total track of time today. In a good way though because I spent it with the family having out delayed Christmas celebration. I’m wiped out and tired so I will return tomorrow like the sun.

Kicking Friday

Shave and a haircut, makes a man feel good. Well in my case a beard trim and haircut. What didn’t feel good was that trunk lid hitting me in the back of the head when it fell unexpectedly.

Photography Journey Day 57 – 12/27/24

I may have underestimated the effort to go through over a decade’s worth of images in a short amount of time. Select, edit, upload and sometimes make some prints. I just have to keep plugging away each day. It could take the month of January.

While trying to upload new images I’m still organizing portfolios and moving about 500 images to new spots that made more sense.

I did get out to the Patapsco River today near Grist Mill Trail and what I thought was the old Simpkins Industry’s building.

Standing on the Grist Mill walking bridge at the start of the trail. Photo by Mike Hartley

My better half’s family and I used to walk that trail together, and I’m going to come back down here and do that walk on the next nice day.

I remember loading Simpkins flatbed trucks up with bail’s of paper to be processed from the Times building in the 1970s.

There are always people who will make the wrong decisions. Photo by Mike Hartley

Unfortunately people have turned this old site into a dumping ground right along a beautiful river. I think I’ll start taking a trash bag along with me on walks and do some cleanup.

Hopefully one of these days one of these peckerwoods dumping illegally will back their truck too close to the edge and I’ll find it down there next time. Photo by Mike Hartley

It had been a good while since driving River Road just outside Ellicott City in Baltimore County. When I worked at The Times Newspapers, I would sometimes drive down by the river and sit there and have my lunch.

Not the ideal place for a foundation. Photo by Mike Hartley

There is no parking along River Road now for a long stretch where there used to be several spots to pull over and sit and listen to the water and woods.

And where there is spots to pull over, look out for broken glass. There are a few spots as River Road goes over the bridge and becomes Ilchester Road on the right that have legal parking.

It was nice to get out for a few minutes this morning. Something I should make a habit of every morning.

Were going to get a soaking rain it appears the next two days. Where’s my raincoat?

Against the tide

I feel like I’m in a small boat in a big body of water paddling against the tide this morning. Having trouble with the body but trying to power through it. After almost 3 hours progress is slow. I have to much to do today to be hobbled.

I used to say that last statement and be able to power through. It’s getting tougher as I age. I’m so hard headed that sometimes powering through it creates more pain. Something I’m going to have to find a better balance with in the future.

It appears I finished off all the Daily Writing prompts early. Not like me to be done early but I must have doubled up some days. Another result of less sleep than needed.

Time for a haircut and maybe some shooting if the sun peaks out. At least a small cruise is in order. I haven’t been out in a bit.

Plugging away

I’m giving up on normal sleep cycles. I just can’t get it together.

Photo Journey Day 49 recap – 12/19/24

Yesterday a concerted effort began to fill out and organize my photo site. I have several thousand images, and I want to get many more there before the end of the year. A lot more because I haven’t probably touched half the images I’d like to edit, upload, sort and organize.

A warm weather image being it’s snowing out here today. Photo by Mike Hartley

We are going to need to get away in January or February. I’m not sure if we will take a day or two at the beach or inland. But we are both feeling the need for a break.

Too chilly to walk that beach this morning. Plus I just checked the webcam and the sun isn’t up in Ocean City either. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel like making sausage gravy and biscuits.
  • If you haven’t noticed, society is starting to break down at normal activities.
  • Maybe we should vote to shut down Twitter, Tesla and Space X and see how that feels to Elon and his employees. Bet Republicans didn’t know they were voting for Musk to run the country. And poor JD he’s back to the rear seat of the car.
  • Pet’s are worth their weight in gold. And more in some cases.

Now is Nice

Had a great day with some old friends yesterday but finished it up with a headache. Such is life. A couple Tylenol and all was well again.

Today might not be so nice. Got some 50+ mph wind gusts coming later this morning and that always increases our likelihood of power loss. So I’m charging the batteries on the cameras and will do some shooting if we do.

Two of my least favorite things, wind and cold together. A warm summer breeze is a welcome thing. A 50 mph gust and temps in the 20s is pretty unpleasant.

I do have go out for a few errands but I’ll probably stick close to home in case we have issues from the wind. Being surrounded by trees is always an adventure. I was just out securing the light items and bringing the trash cans under the deck and it’s so quiet and calm out right now.

It looks like the animal kingdom is also hunkering down. I don’t see the normal morning activity out back. No deer or squirrels and the birds seem to have disappeared all but a few distant chirps. At least the wind will clear out this cloudy start to the day.

Still enjoying life. Photo by Mike Hartley

So if you don’t see anymore postings today you can assume I’m powerless and gone out photographing for a bit till I have to worry about how to heat the house. Enjoy your day, be safe and healthy.

Cool it

A cool start to December but I hope to heat this month up.

Photography Journey Day 31 Recap – 12/1/24

I didn’t pick up a camera yesterday. Only a few snaps with the phone. It was kind of a personal and rest day. I think I saw the intro to Sunday Night Football and that is the last thing I remember. Both my mind and body checked out early.

Went to a Maryland basketball game yesterday with my son and 2 best friends. A quick trip to 3 Brothers in Greenbelt Plaza after the game and than a snowball on the way home with my son. We visited for a bit and then I edited about 30 images and uploaded the shots of my son’s family that he wanted.

So it wasn’t a productive day for new images but it was a great day for my spirit. Back to shooting today.

Yes it was cold. Most were purchasing hot chocolate, but we took the snowballs home and ate them in the warmth of the living room.

Smiling

Ah the smells of the Thanksgiving feast have started. The family will be together in a few hours. The Macy’s parade is starting. Normally I’d be getting off work around 7am and just going to sleep about now but retirement has freed me from that nonsense, and I get to enjoy another holiday the way most celebrated.

Photography Journey Day 27 Recap – 11/27/24

Another slow shooting day. But good progress on organization, editing and upload images. I found several old ones that inspired some new blogging ideas.

Lessons I learned yesterday.

  • Even though I’m hungry as I can be I need to be disciplined enough to take a picture of the food first. Because some dishes are just beautiful to the sight as well as the pallet.
  • You can’t get any new shots unless you pick up the camera. I only took 3 frames yesterday and it was so little I didn’t even download them yet.
  • Watched a video on Macro photography. Never had a camera with a macro-option.
  • Read some more of The Photographers Playbook. Reading is good for knowledge.

Just one of the many activities that kept me from my hobbies yesterday was the University of Maryland Basketball game. But it’s always good to take a break every so often. And it was a great game filled with many highlights.

Decided to try my hand at something another blogger (thank you Sheree) kind of inspired me to do. To participate in a Thursdaydoors group. She puts so many beautiful doors up on Thursdays so here is my first shot at it. I shot this first one below yesterday. Others are a little older.

Photography Journey Day 19 – 11/19/24

It was a bit overcast out and I was hoping for more light so I put the camera away early but when we were in the kitchen my better half pointed out this Pileated woodpecker. I believe this is the male. With the red cheek stripe.

And here I was thinking it wasn’t the colorful season after the leaves have fallen.

I’m pretty sure he heard me snapping away.

It’s impressive with how large these birds are.

I guess I should start naming these guys. I’ll be catching them around the yard this winter.

Note sure how much more shooting I’ll get to this day. I’m trying to edit, upload and sort the most recent weeks and then start the process of going through the library and figuring what I haven’t edited and uploaded.

No engine

I sat on the sidelines this afternoon and evening. Just some time with my better half and a nice Sunday dinner followed by some reading and recliner time.

Photo Journey Day 17 – 11/17/24

I did a few minutes shooting this morning and then never picked up the camera again. I do have a few dozen shots to upload this evening and some more to edit so let me make the best of this last hour of the day being I made the most of this day of rest.

See you all on Monday.

The Snowball Stand

What is your favorite place to go in your city? – An easy question from the Daily Writing prompt.

I don’t live in a city. I live in a town called Woodstock. And my favorite place is The Snowball Stand. We have been here for more than a few decades and that has been a staple of our life. Well, mine and the kids, my better half is more of an ice cream person.

Neighborhood kids have worked there for generations including mine. It’s such a refreshing treat on a warm day (I can eat’em on cold days also). It’s a small spot, but a popular one. Owners have changed a few times and each time they keep adding things.

The new owners are keeping it open longer and serving hot drinks (cider, hot chocolate) and selling pumpkins and Xmas trees till they close in December. Then there is that painful period till they open I believe in mid to late March again when I get to start redeeming the gift cards the kids get me a Xmas for more snowballs. And the cycle of life continues.

MMM Cherry, my favorite. Photo by Mike Hartley

I even stop at their parking area and take photos periodically of the fields and woods of the Howard County Conservancy which is right across the street from The Snowball Stand. Like the shot below. It’s a beautiful and relaxing view when I have the time to consume one there.

Caution – Brain Freeze is a real condition. I get it every time.

Slacking again

Our monthly Miata club meeting starts in about 5 minutes. It’s cloudy and hazy out which isn’t any good for photographing. It’s cold out which I abhor. Yeah, I know, I’m slacking. I should have been ready a few hours ago but a leisurely morning with my better half and time got away from me.

Another member of the Maryland Miata Club. Photo by Mike Hartley

Everyone in the club seems nice so far. I’ve only been to a half dozen meetings but it’s an active group who really like this car. The Facebook group is active every day with multiple posts. It’s a very helpful and responsive club.

It seems to encourage the feeling I used to have when seeing another biker and acknowledging them. I also like the ideas and modifications a lot of them have done.

I’ve got a virgin (stock) model that I haven’t modified yet but the time is soon coming. Mostly because of age, my go-cart will be 9 years old next year. This coming year I hope to do a bit more photography for the group and maybe go to one of the track events and also do some shooting.

All I know is these cars are a lot of fun to drive and finding a group of fellow enthusiasts is a nice treat.

Which reminds me with the rains coming in a few hours I should go throw the cover on the ride. I’ve thought about storing it this winter for a month or two.

Radio Broadcast

As more and more sports go to streaming there are more and more times I’ll be listening to the radio/internet broadcast again. Like the Maryland Terrapins season opener the other night.

I like radio sports. I grew up listening to a lot of it that way. Mostly basketball and baseball. There is something about a broadcaster helping you visualize in the mind now that brings back childhood memories.

Not many sports were televised, I mean a very few. Nothing like today. I wonder if our younger people will even listen to radio broadcasts. Could be a big change when my generation is gone.

Radio allows me to keep working on some other tasks, but also keep in the game. Lots of times I like the radio broadcasters better and will mute the sound on the TV and listen to the game called by the local announcers.

That local knowledge and history brings more to the broadcast than the national angle does. So the next game is on Monday and being that is on streaming also I’ll be listening again with excitement.

Brown Noser

The title Brown Noser came to mind as I edited this shot below. Real brown nosers make me laugh now looking back at them. They made me laugh back then also. I don’t run into many now in retirement.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m trying to commit to cooking more. Sort of like the old Wanted posters “Dead or Alive”
  • We seem to surround each other and at the same time, we are so lonely.
  • Found a picture of my kindergarten class. At first, I smiled and then I got scared about how long ago that was.
  • I think the mind and the body are in a race to see which can cause the most chaos.
  • I have no proof but I think drinking a glass of milk a day has been good for me.

The View

The view of this day is optimistic. The weather is sunny and warming slowly, the time is available for adventure and while not feeling 100%, there is reserve strength to be used. I’ve got the camera batteries charged and I hope to get out and about and capture some of life.

I meant to post the section below last night but I passed out early.

Photography Journey Day 3 Recap

I was productive but not in the traditional sense.

I ordered a new camera. After a bit of research and talking to some technical people the choice was made. The two I’ve been using were purchased in 2007 and 2014. A Kodak Z812 IS and a Nikon D7100. I’m not going to divulge what I’m replacing the old Kodak with for a bit and first see if I can feel a difference in my photography.

Of course, I’m well aware equipment doesn’t make the photographer. I’ve made the choice based on developing some areas of shooting interest. Hopefully, they will be fully evident when I get to work.

I’m of the age where I thought to myself is this the last camera I’ll own? It might be given the length of time I seem to use them for. I hope it’s not, I hope I wear it out and have enough energy and desire in my late senior years to need another new one to keep plugging away at this craft.

My better half recognized how much I enjoyed it and encouraged me to move forward with it. Thanks for the support, my love.

Best Parking Space Ever

In a world of pickups and SUVs, my little Miata is always feeling pinched in parking lots. Well, I got a space in Ocean City that I was just tickled to death about. I even heard someone say “That’s wrong” after looking at it.

New TV Rules are in effect.

  • Look at the guide in the morning and decide if I’m watching anything live.
  • Record things I think I’d like. – This is good because most the time I don’t go back and watch.
  • TV stays off when not watching, no more background noise.
  • It’s okay to watch if I’m on the treadmill.
  • Don’t watch some of my favorite movies every time they come on again.
  • Watch more educational shows.

It’s been a fun month and a productive one at that. A full day to go and I hope to finish strong. A happy Halloween to everyone. Be careful of all those youngsters out and about today.

If I had a photo editing package I could have removed my shadow from the hood. But imperfections are what make my work a work in progress. And yes that design was his hood. Shot this at Endless Summer in Ocean City. Photo by Mike Hartley

No baseball in November this year. My Yankees went down last night, so congrats to the Dodgers. Maybe next year. Onto the basketball season and the University of Maryland.

Felt sore after a hard day of work but feeling stronger early this morning. I still need to get some shuteye but I’m on a roll now working on my office so maybe in a few hours.

I didn’t get any seat time in the go-cart yesterday so that will hit the road today. I also need to get that ice cream I didn’t yesterday and do some shooting.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I just realized I hadn’t danced in a bit. I’m not listening to enough music. I’ll cure that.
  • The difference between making a To-Do list when working, and one when retired is that you think about fun things to add to the later one.
  • I have to get this place cleaned up for the holidays and company. Meaning the messes I create. My better half keeps the rest of the abode quite tidy.
  • A clean car feels faster.

Feeling divided are we

We may not be as divided as we appear to be. At least I don’t think we are. I think the middle far outnumbers the extreme on both sides.

I’ve voted, I’ve taken a chill pill, and might not watch much besides sports for the next week. Plus I’m looking to up my output this coming month in both hobbies and exercise.

Maybe we can meet each other halfway and get things done that would make the majority happy.

Okay

Okay, the sun’s been up for a bit, it’s time to get busy.

I’m not sure why but I’m looking forward to this day. Monday’s usually mean the family and friends are back to work and I’m left to my devices. And this one is no exception.

I just know that I’m in good spirits and hoping to create something special this fine sunny morning.

Keeping it rolling

I’ve got some momentum going and I just need to keep it rolling. I was reminded of it when I tried to fit into one of these and keep moving. After a step to get my timing, I was off. The key was consistency. Unless you want to pretend you’re ten and rolling inside a tire down a hill at breakneck speeds. And my old behind doesn’t even want to fall upside down in one of these.

Rolling along. Photo by Mike Hartley

Posting 2-3 times a day is a challenge I’m enjoying. I just have to bring some quality content into it now. I’m back to shooting more again so my pictures usually inspire some better thoughts.

This is the first year I could enjoy the fall trip to the farm for pumpkin picking and various farm entertainment. (Again, retirement is great) The wagon out to the pumpkin patch was full and I was about to walk back but the guy let me ride in the cab of the Case tractor with him. Been a long while since riding in the cab on a true farm implement.

Bumpy ride. Photo by Mike Hartley

Having the morning and afternoon with the family and then some lunch together with the topping of the day being our granddaughter spending the night was wonderful. Sunday I had a chance to rest a bit and recoup without a week of work looking me in the face.

This retirement gig is pretty cool. I loved my job at several stages of my career. I liked my job when I left it, but I love what I’m doing now. And that has made life much more pleasurable again.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Critical decision on what camera to replace my old one with.
  • Another beautiful sunny day. I should get outside and enjoy it.
  • I think I’ll detail the interior of my car.
  • Looking forward to a nice meal today.

Out cruisin

A wonderful day of shooting and maybe another one ahead. I downloaded half of it and will start on the other half in a few minutes.

The top down on the go-cart soaking up rays in between shoots with the R&R adding to the motion. I might go back out this evening and tomorrow is a definite for more road time.

I’m appreciating the last few days with the tee shirt and shorts with the top-down combo. It’s going to get too cool for that from now on.

I guess I should have stopped when the kids said they were hungry. Photo by Mike Hartley

I should get to the evening’s production. Lots of editing to do and I’m feeling tired already.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The Vote is in. Just waiting for confirmation from the county now.
  • May Karma visit those of you driving across the center line.
  • I’ve been wrong about some things in life. Regardless, I move on.
  • I think The Who hit on something with the song “I Can’t Explain” – There is so much, I can’t explain.
  • Life is short, make it work for you.

Good start

Up early doing some writing and photo editing, got a plan for the day, and cranking the printer up, now that I’m inked up again.

It feels good to complete that editing on the Endless Summer photo project. I have some shots of Western Maryland to add to my Cumberland portfolio.

Shot this train turntable in Frostburg. Photo by Mike Hartley

I found a few of these turntables still operate in the state. A list of surviving turntables in Maryland.

I’d like to get out and do some fall color shooting today. We will see how the day progresses.

Whoops, just checked my to-do list and found I have to edit and print shots from the family visit to the farm.

Also a few errands to run today so I’m glad I got moving around 3 am.

But the first order of business is to VOTE.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Almost time to think about hibernating again.
  • Voids in life aren’t good.
  • As age increases, tolerance fades.
  • Revelations about life can have profound changes in perspective.
  • I think I found the color I’ll paint my car next. I’m also going with a tan top when that is time. I never thought about it being my last car but it just might be. I hope to keep it running a good while longer. At least as long as it takes to teach my grandchildren how to drive a stick.
  • Basketball season is returning. Life is good.

Ready

I did a post on October 14th of a few images from the Endless Summer Crusin event in Ocean City Maryland. I mentioned that I had a lot more to edit, several hundred. I put a gallery up OCES24 this morning of the 577 images from that 2-day shoot.

I knew I would like this event, the sounds, smells, and sights. But it was great fun shooting it also. I have attended local car shows and tried some shooting but the weather, location, and volume of unique and special works of rolling art and horsepower were beyond what I imagined.

I’m guessing there were a couple thousand cars/trucks/vans/antiques and specialty vehicles that I only got a sampling of. I shot the boardwalk parade from a balcony Friday morning and from the boardwalk on Saturday. We also had a one-day pass to the Inlet parking lot and Convention Center and lots.

I liked the high angle on some of the cars. The design perspective changes a lot from the normal eye level. I just did a little crop on some. I did no color correction. These paint jobs didn’t need any.

Next year I’m going to concentrate on some of the club meetings around town and just the cruising action shots. And start doing some video also.

Health issues took two hours from my time on Saturday and I probably overwalked on my bum knee but all is well and it was one of the best trips to the beach I’ve ever had.

Learning is part of any experience being an amateur photog. So here is what I learned.

  • Next year I know to use the tripod to shoot from the balcony. My hands aren’t as steady as they used to be. And that heavy Nikon and zoom lens is a cinderblock in disguise.
  • I liked some of the low-angle shots but they were punishing on the knees. (order a kneepad)
  • I still don’t take enough frames. An old habit of shooting with film.
  • Be patient. Big events equal big crowds. You might have to wait a few minutes to get a good shot.
  • Finding the right angles with that early morning sun being so low in the sky is key.
  • 15th Street was a pretty good location. Still going to search for another spot though. Or maybe a corner room where I could shoot down the boardwalk also.
  • I learned not to be near anyone with a coffee. Yep had one spilled on my Nikon. Still operating but it’s going to need a good cleaning.
  • Get more crowd shots. The number of people lining the streets day and night is impressive.
  • This was the last year using the old Kodak on anything. I’ll give it to my granddaughter and teach her about photography. Well maybe another year, she’s still young.

Fire

I have no scheduled travel plans this coming week so I think I’ll forge ahead and purchase a firepit. I meant to do that last year and with November coming it’s the season to make some use of the patio on the side of the house.

Who knows, it might get me outside a bit more during the cooler days and nights. What triggered it was being outside by a firepit the other evening at Rocky Gap. I wandered out to one for a few moments and it was nice.

Outside Rocky Gap Lodge lakefront. Photo by Mike Hartley

These were nice gas pits but I’m looking for a wood-burning one. I’ll gather up my gift cards to Ace Hardware and pull the trigger on that this coming Monday or Tuesday.

I didn’t get as much done today as I hoped, but I’m satisfied with the good effort. And there is still time to add to the day’s production. I’m down to the last 300 images to edit and hopefully, I’ll upload all the ones that passed some mustard to the photo site.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love shrimp.
  • My knee doesn’t seem to be improving.
  • Crap, I need to order ink again.
  • The space heater has been activated for the season.
  • Time to vote. One of my favorite things about living in this country.

Go West

My better half and I took a trip to Western Maryland this week. Allegany County to be specific. It’s quite the contrast to the Maryland Eastern Shore trip we took last week. The thing they have in common though is they are both beautiful.

The colors were out on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad we took on Wednesday. It’s very near peak season for the trees to change.

We sat in an enclosed car but they do have open-air cars on the train. Photo by Mike Hartley

The contrast of the lower eastern shore’s recent visit accentuated the height of the mountains we traveled on our way to Cumberland.

Small towns dot the landscapes. Photo by Mike Hartley

One thing I love about the eastern and western parts of the state is that they are rural. There are open spaces. Well Ocean City itself hasn’t an inch of open space but everything on the way there is.

I still think the prime color is about a week off. Photo by Mike Hartley

I know we will be heading west again, probably in the spring. They do have a Winter Express train which sounded nice but driving out there in the dead of winter won’t be as pleasant as this ride was this week.

Frostberg Train Staiton. Photo by Mike Hartley

We stayed a night at Rocky Gap Casino Resort and Golf. No, I didn’t play golf. I did casino and resort though. Some nice firepits outside at night, beautiful views of the lake, and surrounding grounds and state park.

A real Engineer. Photo by Mike Hartley

This was the second train ride I’ve taken this year. I like it.

I’m into motors but this is a bit out of my range. Photo by Mike Hartley

It rained, misted, and was mostly overcast the entire day with a few precious peeks of sun. But it was a very nice day and ride, one we will take again. I’ll make sure to do one in the summer when the ice cream stand at the top of the station will get some of my business.

I’ve got some more pictures I’ll share later.

Before dinner shoot

I met my daughter for dinner at Mt Washington Tavern last week. I highly recommend this spot. I arrived early to walk a bit and try some street shooting. We left the next morning for the beach so I’m just getting around to editing a few shots.

I had a friend who worked for the Enoch Pratt Library system. I should have come mid-afternoon for some better light but made do with what was available.

I didn’t sample the Nourish Organics juice bar but might the next time in town.

I just looked at the menu for Abbey Burger and I’m going to be dining there someday soon.

I believe the waterway is called the Western Run.

I didn’t catch the name of this fashion shop being dresses aren’t on my list, but I found it unique to have them lined up outside for viewing.

Well, the day is getting away from me. Let me grab a shower and get some fresh shooting in because it’s a nice sunny day, so I can be even more behind on my editing. That is a nice problem to have though.

Have a good afternoon all.

Observation

Attending the Endless Summer Cruisin event in Ocean City I observed many wonderful pieces of rolling art. But, I also observed many couples and families enjoying and sharing the passion and joy of a family member.

Like the smile of this young one below at the crowd that lined the boardwalk parade of cars.

The details in some of the paint jobs were incredible. Photo by Mike Hartley

I saw it over and over. Kids on the laps of parents behind the wheel or holding on.

Couples riding together.

It warmed up later for these two. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I saw a few father/son combinations also.

Even Granny and Grandpa showed up riding high.

I bet there were a lot of young people saying what is this? Photo by Mike Hartley

So it was family, young and old.

Sunday finish

Incredibly productive day from my perspective and I hope to keep it going into the evening. I’ve got a good start with the first pass edit of 800 images from the weekend shoot. And a couple picked out for this post.

I still have another 150 to transfer and do a first pass on. I’ll provide a link to all the finalists when I upload this mess to the photo site.

I believe we have a Pontiac 1957 Star Chief. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was nice having two attempts at the boardwalk parade in Ocean City MD this weekend. I shot one from the boards and one from the second-floor balcony in the background in the blue glass.

Nice coming and going. Photo by Mike Hartley

The weather was beautiful. I was out in shorts.

Class Act Can’t argue with this. Photo by Mike Hartley

This nice stretch of weather is coming to an end, with some winds and much cooler temps moving into the area. So it was nice to spend the day outside.

A good workout with the push mower followed by washing and drying the Miata. A quick ride and dropped the SUV at the shop for some repairs. Spent some time with the leaf blower and tinkering with the riding mower trying to figure out how to get that running again.

The camera batteries are charged again and I’m ready for another week of shooting.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The less TV I watch, the happier I am.
  • Football, modern-day Gladiators.
  • I saw a post titled Can Hope and Hopelessness Exist Together. I haven’t read it yet but I believe the answer is yes.
  • I’ve got to be a better reader. Time to devote some time each day.

Best

I’ve got to give credit to my better half for catching the tee shirt on this guy. I was looking the other way when she alerted me. It’s the best shirt I saw all weekend in Ocean City for the Cruisin event. I should have zoomed in more but I liked the pier in the background.

The shirt reads I KNOW…….. JUST WRITE THE TICKET

Because what is the first question the cop always asks? Do you know how fast you were going?

Bridge

Amazing spans crossing expanses of water. Some are small, some not so small. Engineering masterpieces. But so frail at the same time. I bet most of us don’t even think about all the bridges we cross each day. We were boating this weekend and passed under the bridges at Kent Narrows.

Less traffic down here. Photo by Mike Hartley

The large one here is the R. Clayton Mitchell Jr. Bridge.

I love being on the water. I’d pass on being on the gulf today though. Photo by Mike Hartley

The smaller one above is the Kent Narrows Draw Bridge. The schedule of opening times.

It’s always nice to get a view of these structures.

This is a short one vs the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which you will cross in a few miles after this one. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m certain to cross this span again before the end of the season.

Motoring

I guess I should get my feet on the ground and get motoring again. I’ve finished cooking the bacon, on my second blog post of the morning and am about to do a little carving. I also sent some photos of the weekend with the boys to each of them.

This was a comfortable position this weekend. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s going to be a great day. Prepping for a few photo projects this weekend. Having dinner with my Daughter today which is something we haven’t had a chance to do together in a while. It’s something we used to do every school year but got out of sync for a bit. We are both kind of giddy about it.

Lots to do between now and then though. So let me step away again.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Listen closely to people. That tells you just about everything you need to know about them.
  • Poor education will help you make poor decisions.
  • Hoping my furnace holds out another year. Seasonal check is next week.
  • Get your seafood now before it’s out of season and not as fresh.
  • It’s been a painful week so far.

Tuesday Trials

Is there such a thing as a free day? I was thinking I had one today, but that was short-lived. I worked on a couple of important letters this morning to my granddaughter and an old friend. One was fun and the other a little difficult.

We are trying to navigate our way around political differences and I’m trying to get him to leave politics out of it but with limited success. Such is life.

Some of my plans were put on hold due to the body not cooperating. So I spent the afternoon editing and writing along with some planning. I charged the batteries, did some reading and finally fought off the headache.

I saw a good question the other day that got me thinking. Where do I feel most centered and happy? And the answer is my basement office.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Living with the beauty of Florida means risking losing everything. Nice place to visit, wouldn’t want to live there.
  • I love the smell of cinnamon buns in the morning.
  • I’m excited about the coming college basketball season and the University of Maryland’s team.
  • A dinner date with my daughter brings a smile to my face.
  • When I took typing in high school (yes it was a class) I didn’t realize it would be one of the most important skills I would use.

Still crabbin

Still a good month for crabs in Maryland. These guys were out working the Bay early one morning this past weekend.

Monday Musings

I washed the car and it got cloudy. The monthly meeting of the Miata Club of Maryland was attended. Felt good because I hadn’t been in the last 2 months. I always learn things and see new styling details. And of course, the hoods open and the engine talk starts.

A lot of the group is into autocross racing and even some track events. I haven’t modified my ride but its time is coming. Nothing radical.

Photos by Mike Hartley

My better half and I had a wonderful lunch at Oscars Ale House in Woodstock today. Great service and food. And so close to home. Hell yeah. Cheesesteak eggrolls with queso and a Monte Cristo were just the ticket I needed today. I belive she had the cream of crab soup with the turkey and avacodo sandwich.

Reliving parts of this weekend in my mind today. After not shooting for many years with the shotgun I see I haven’t lost the touch and another round and I’ll be on my game again. I’m going to take my son to this place on the Eastern Shore called The Point at Pintail. We had a great time slinging lead.

Covid vaccine received. I’m a big believer in modern medicine despite the many doubters. My father was in the medical field and my mother was always a big believer in it. We spent a lot of time at Bethesda Naval Hospital in my youth. And even as my Mom got older we went there for her appointments and surgeries.

Time to kick back and edit some photos, make some prints and catch a little baseball and football. Have a good evening all.

Wingspan

This Blue Herron took off and showed its wingspan.

I need a lot of things but a fast telephoto would be nice. Photo by Mike Hartley

No bird watching this Monday. I will be looking at some Miata’s later at the club meeting.

Same bird. Hard to imagine a wingspan like they have when airborne. Photo by Mike Hartley

I really changed my perspectives on Mondays when I retired.

Many types of fishermen were out this weekend on the Bay. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Baseball may have saved the game by some of the rule changes, like a pitch clock, mound visits, and pick-off throws.
  • I can never decide between Baby Ruth, Snickers, and Butterfingers.
  • Moving beyond some disappointments.
  • October is going to be a great month. At least my hopes are up for it.

Weekend rearview

The sun has set on one beautiful weekend and we’re off to a good start this week. The weather looks great, we have some wonderful plans and life is good.

I got away this past weekend, with two of my best friends and we had a fine time. We ate well and sprinkled in a few activities like boating and skeet shooting at a great farm on the eastern shore. We watched sunsets and ships go by and had a lot of fun.

Our nightly view from my friend’s home on the Chesapeake Bay. Photo by Mike Hartley

Today is full of chores, vaccinations, car detailing, shotgun cleaning, mowing, and then the Miata Club meeting late this afternoon. Retirement life isn’t bad.

I’ve got a few hundred photos to edit, some writing ideas, and oh yeah, I got to write and send a letter to my granddaughter. Good thing I finally got a good night’s sleep last night. That string of 4-5 hours a night wasn’t right.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A weekend without TV. That is nice. Might have to expand that.
  • People have different ideas of commitments.
  • Water is both beautiful and intimidating at the same time.
  • My right knee is in pain.
  • I have to move on from a few things.

The home stretch

Welcome to October. The transition month as I think of it. Some warm days but cooler nights and then towards the end of the month that chill begins to take hold. Must be those damn pumpkins.

I’ve got 3 months to complete a lot of things and start even more. The first day of the month was devoted to our grandson though. His parents were lucky enough to be able to attend the Orioles playoff game with their best friends.

Dancing on dugout with the Oriole Bird. Photo by Mike Hartley

They were telling us its the first time they have been out together alone without their children in almost 2 years. So glad they could do that and they all are big fans. We see our grandson fairly often but at this age he seems to add new words to his vocabulary every day. And its a lot of fun trying to figure out what he is saying because its a language all his own at times.

I also got to spend some time with my favorite pet. My sons oldest dog. Pets are here for such a short time. They give so much love and become such a part of a family.

The second day of the month has a doctors appointment and some chores but hopefully a little shooting in the county and maybe some carving this morning and drawing this evening. And maybe I’ll sneak in another post or two.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Someone needs to explain why the summer goes by so fast.
  • If you see people dancing in the street today it’s because it finally stopped raining.
  • Feeling the urge to rearrange the basement.
  • I’m moved to make a donation to the Red Cross this morning.

NonStop

The schedule this week looks nonstop, with multiple tasks and appointments each day. Of course, I’ve mixed in a little fun to go along with the responsibilities.

I hope to be nonstop in producing new work this week.

The political ads seem to be nonstop now.

Time moves on nonstop, doesn’t it?

I like non-stop flights when I fly.

Oh and the assault of pumpkin spice and other pumpkin things are nonstop at every farm and store.

Feeling conflicted

I was going to the car show in Maple Lawn today but it’s still wet. I did go out and dry my ride off and hopefully, I’ll take a ride later today if that sun decides to come out. I guess I shouldn’t speak ill of the sun. It does provide us with important aspects of life.

Shot from Antietam National Battlefield. Photo by Mike Hartley

I feel conflicted about people, and how to proceed in certain areas. I feel conflicted about what to work on today.

I guess I should just go do something and get on with life.

Hard to beat

I still get excited about Fridays. Must be all those years of work and getting to Friday was the reward. As is normal now I’m off on Fridays. So a few weeks ago we stopped by Berlin Maryland on a warm Friday. A little town only 8 miles from Ocean City MD that we like to stop in on our way home.

We stayed at the building below, Hotel Atlantic, and spent 2 days there a few years back. Two active glassworks shops in town always pique my interest. I’m sure we will return there and stay again.

We have sampled several eateries in town and have been very happy. I love small towns in Maryland. Always so friendly and welcoming both from the merchants and locals.

It certainly has its history being incorporated as a town in 1868. If you are down this way on the first Saturday in August you should stop by for the Peach Festival.

Friday Full Discloser – I had the camera bag packed. I even had a gift card for the local BBQ spot. I stepped to the front door and noticed the rain. I paused. I took a step off the porch onto a patch of nuts that had dropped from the oak trees in front. I skated for a second till traction was regained took another step and went to my knees in pain.

I figured that was enough and if I took another slip or fall I’d be horizontal the rest of the weekend. So discretion was the better part of valor. I’ll find something to photograph inside today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • They tell me pain is relative. I feel like mine is one who moved in and won’t leave.
  • Now that my granddaughter has started kindergarten I’ve started to mail her letters now that I’m not seeing her as often.
  • I like seeing someone’s face when they get a print of a photo I’ve shot and they like it.
  • I’ve tipped my hand far too often in life. But I’ve learned.

Gratifying

Working hard brings a lot of gratification. However, I always had difficulty finding a good balance between working hard and overworking. And in recent months I was beginning to feel I wasn’t making the best use of time. This week I mentioned I’m trying a new mindset and trying to be much more productive with my time.

And it’s working out without overdoing it. So far I’m finding that sweet spot. Being very satisfied with the day’s work at the day’s end.

I was doing some editing I ran by this shot from earlier this year. It reminded me of that early morning. A few hours before sunrise I was wandering the back streets of Ocean City Maryland in February when I walked by this about a half hour before daylight.

It was both cold and mostly deserted. I ran across this mural and a partial piece of another one in front of it on a sidestreet downtown lit by dim streetlights. It’s not the best photo but it reminds me to work early and often because I have never seen it all.

And for my lazy butt to carry a tripod when out at this hour.

Getting out at various times of day and night is a great way to see things from different perspectives. I think this looks quite different during the day. Maybe I’ll get out early Thursday morning and see what I can capture around home. Opportunity awaits.

Light it up

One of the many wonderful cars from the Maryland Miata Club. I’ve missed a few monthly events but won’t miss the October meeting. I enjoy these events and meeting fellow drivers.

I have a newer model but I love all the body styles since its introduction in 1989. Photo by Mike Hartley

There are several parts of the club I haven’t gotten into yet but there is time. Such as Spirited drives, Autocross, and actual local race tracks. Of course I’ll need some modifications like a roll bar if I want to do that. There is also the monthly meet and swap meet.

This weekend (weather permitting) the group is going to a local car show in Maple Lawn. I hope to be part of the club that rolls in together.

A morning full of meaningful correspondences. Some important backups of data were completed. I’ve finished editing a full day of shooting from Harpers Ferry. The office has been picked up a bit and a workout is mostly complete except for some treadmill time.

I’m also planning a good night’s rest after some football and writing time.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Fall and I are off to a poor start. Cold and rainy is not my idea of a good Monday.
  • Who is fact-checking AI ?
  • It’s been a very productive day so that new mindset is working so far.
  • Thinking is good. Thinking about the right things is better.
  • Every day of every job I’ve had for half a century has been filled with deadlines. I kind of turned them all off after retirement earlier this year. I’m starting to incorporate some again.
  • It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it. Even with one that isn’t 100% anymore.

Destination Unknown

I’m heading out today and letting the car take me to the spot I get out and photograph. I sense it will head west. Sometimes I like heading out without direction or an assignment in mind. To be truthful, most of the time I head out without direction or assignment.

While out I might try a series of low-angle shots or reflections or focus on certain colors, lines, or objects. Sometimes seasonal or architectural. I never head out with the intention of shooting (photographing) people but I’m enjoying it more lately.

Given what goes on in this country shooting means guns usually which is sad because even as a young photographer I heard professionals refer to things as shoots, did you get that shot or I’m heading out shooting for a few hours in town.

I only took two shots on the pier on a day at the ocean earlier this month, the other I used of two birds a few days back. I think I like this one better. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope to make the last quarter of the year something special. Not that it hasn’t been a great year so far. One of the best in my life. But in terms of finishing some projects and getting a great start on others.

I’ve got a head start reorganizing my workroom and purging things to create more floor space so I’m not moving something all the time.

I’m going to try to fight my normal instincts to hibernate this winter. Yes, this is your pre-warning that I will be complaining about the cold again. I can make it through fall but the negative waves will begin in December.

Holidays will be special not working them for the first time in ages. I know I’ve worked the last dozen Thanksgiving mornings where I got off at 6 or 7 am and would have to be up in a few hours to shower to start greeting family or head to a family member’s home.

Pretty much the same for Christmas and New Year’s holidays. A highly overlooked aspect of the job that wasn’t the only one that felt it. Lots of crews didn’t have the option of not being staffed 365 or 366 if it’s a leap year.

Let me get back to a few chores before I rinse off the ride. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I’ll try to share the day’s shooting later on.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I like cheese bread.
  • I realized I’ve been slacking on sharing random thoughts.
  • Popsicles are a good sweet treat that doesn’t put on a ton of calories.
  • I don’t know who misses it more. My dad not being able to see me growing up and old or me not seeing him.
  • If summer stretches into late September and October I have no problem with that.
  • The number of deer is getting out of control again. Or is it the number of people?

Ocean Bound

Sometimes beach traffic on Rt 50 looks different on weekdays than on the weekends. I was behind this farm train coming through Easton last Thursday morning on our way to the beach.

I’m pretty sure my car can drive under that. But I’m too old to play fast and furious. Photo by Mike Hartley

The drive to the shore has always been an enjoyable one during weekdays. No traffic jams and people are not in a hurry. We get to stop at our favorite (Wrights Market) a chance to say hello and enjoy the sights of the many farms being tended.

The scene below is what I see when I’ve spent a day at the beach by myself and I’m about to head home for the night. The Route 50 drawbridge leaving Ocean City. With the sign saying Sacramento California 3073 miles ahead. Luckily I only have about 150 miles at this point.

I’ve seen enough bumper-to-bumper on this road over the years so we travel at off times when we can.

As I noted earlier, Bike Week starts Wednesday 9/11 I believe in Ocean City. I used to love the ride to and from the beach and spending hours up and down Ocean Highway and up to Bethany and back. Please be safe and give each other some space. And have a grand time.

It’s bike week. Love the plates. Photo by Mike Hartley

A great week ahead with grandiose plans. Lots of things accomplished for a Monday already. Let me keep it going and ready another post. Have a safe evening.

When I say it’s Bike Week, I’m guessing this is what my granddaughter pictures. Photo by Mike Hartley

Rides over, another begins

The weekend is about over, the rides are winding down like the sun is. The grilling is complete and consumed. There is a chill in the air already.

Big week at the beach coming up though. Bike Week and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate. Lots of bands and events it appears. I’ll be waiting till that is over before venturing down. I’ve done enough damage to my eardrums over the years without the roar of thousands of Harleys.

Tomorrow I’ll spend some seat time in the Miata with my better half. Not sure if a short ride or longer cruise is in order. I’ll come up with some suggestions tonight while mindlessly watching some football.

I think I’ll get that covered bridge tour map out and see how many of those we can do in a day sometime this fall.

I do know it’s going to be a week of good exercise. The mindset is right.

Good morning

An evening shot below but it’s still dark out now and I wanted something upbeat to start the day. I’m looking forward to a day packed with chores and fun activities.

Just having the opportunity to choose what to do is nice in retirement. I hope it continues for a good while.

Certainly a chilly morning for early September but that will change soon. I’ve got some fun and sun to get before leaf blower season.

Glad I’m getting an early start. It always feels good to get a jump on the day and wait for sunrise.

Refresh

My better half and I went to the beach (Ocean City MD) for a day/night and spent some time in Berlin MD on the way home.

It’s funny that we thought about having the children and grandchildren with us like our family vacation several times that first day as we talked and lay on the beach. The kids playing in the sand or pool and laughing. It’s a lot of fun with them all.

But it’s also nice to get away ourselves.

This trip helped put some wind under our wings again. A change of scenery and feel. Away from the chores and responsibilities.

Sunset at the inlet. Photo by Mike Hartley

The sound of the waves and the warmth of the sand and sun. And despite the sunrise being completely obscured by clouds on Friday morning and a fine mist I still got a few miles in the shoes along the boardwalk and side streets.

A couple of good meals, and a restful night downtown. See you again soon sand and sun.

The Question

Miata is The Answer. See the license plate. Especially here today in central Maryland.

I love the stripes on this one. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was out tooling around a bit today. What a day for cruising with the top down. A cherry snowball from the Woodstock Snowball Stand on the way home, enjoying the view of the Howard County Conservancy grounds while turning my tongue red.

I’m thinking of a late-night ride but I have a ton of work ahead of me. So till tomorrow.

The Place

This is the place to be this weekend. Ocean City Boardwalk and Beach in the great state of Maryland. I loved the old homes that used to populate the boardwalk. Most are long past. Maybe next week or the week after I’ll take that drive to the shore.

Ocean City MD boardwalk. Photo by Mike Hartley

Times change and so have I. Slept on the beach or in the car some nights in my teens and early 20s. But we went and had a good time, outdoor showers, nightclubs, subs, sand and sunburn.

Sometimes the day trips by myself feel like a throwback to those days. Of course, I’m in a car I know will make it there and back now. And I have the money not to go hungry or worry about cash enough for gas. I won’t have to sleep on the beach because I won’t be staying up all night.

But it’s still kind of a bare-bones trip when I go alone, a beach towel, change of clothes, flip flops, tennis shoes, music, and baseball cap.

I also like the luxury of staying at a nice hotel with my better half. Maybe later this year for that.

Because that’s what we do

Because that is what we do in Maryland. We Cruz. It was such a part of my early life. And it is again now with retirement. I believe I’ll go for one this evening before sunset.

Cruising is something I just never outgrew. Photo by the guy in the reflection. You would think by now I would learn how to get out of the way.

I hope everyone is having a good day. Mine has been special again with a nephew’s son celebrating his first birthday. That means I got to see my kids and grandkids also which is a great way to end this week.

And I got lucky because I was being my usual observant self. On the way home I was coming down our street and saw something on the road. As I passed it I thought to myself that looked like a piece of leather. I stopped backed up and got out and it was a wallet. I looked at it and the license said it was my neighbor. He was very happy to get it back.

Wet

Respect for the wet stuff. Sometimes we take our water supply for granted. This is one of the many natural resources that are under strain. Public infrastructures failing. Too much rain and not enough in others. Water quality is under question.

I think I’ll donate to preserving one of my favorite pieces of water. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is an organization one of my best friends enlightened me about.

I bet we could get water management down for the world if we weren’t spending so much on weapons trying to kill each other. Photo by Mike Hartley

I worry about my water supply. We are on a well. But there is a county dump up the road a few miles and that has always concerned me. I believe I’ll have it tested again. A friend of mine just put in a special filtration system on his well system. I’ll have to visit him and learn about this.

With the cool weather at night now the water temp is bound to start dipping in pools if not the ocean and bay. I see the Ocean City water temp was 74 degrees. Time to get there and get wet now unless you’re into chilly water.

I know one person who doesn’t mind it. My granddaughter, I might set up the sprinkler for her tomorrow. Because she is going to grace our house for the day and I can’t wait for that treat that is her smile and hugs. The laughs are just like a wonderful desert.

Serious thought – My grandson is 2 years old. So when I heard a 2-year-old was hit and killed by the boardwalk tram in Ocean City I haven’t been able to get that out of my mind. It was less than a month ago I was walking with him on that same boardwalk. The pain of that loss has to be unbearable for that family and my heart goes out to them.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Learning by doing. One of my favorite ways.
  • Sometimes I think I know people. And then I’m surprised.
  • I’m enjoying baseball more and more lately.
  • I knew this streaming stuff was going to get out of hand. I think I’ll start weaning myself away from watching sports and playing instead.
  • A little voice is sitting on my shoulder yelling ROAD TRIP!

Waiting

About 48 hours of wetness to get through then I can take the cover off and cruise again. Summer is getting away from me and I have to make good use of the remaining warm weather. I’m sure this Chevy SSR owner feels the same way as I saw them cruising The Avenue in White Marsh on a beautiful Friday.

Convertible=check Color=check Rims=check Truck=nope. Photo by Mike Hartley

The fun machine was waxed the other day so it looks like this coming Tuesday will be the day I get to give the interior and wheels/rims some attention.

I still find joy in detailing my ride. Yes, I’m sure some professionals could do it better but I can live with the job I do fine. Plus I’m not shelling out a few hundred dollars to have it done.

But I’m no longer a mechanic. Not that I couldn’t learn and get back into it, but I’d rather leave that to the pros and enjoy the upgrades while driving.

Well, enough about the 4-wheel enjoyment.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • The wonderful smell of bacon never gets old to me.
  • Learning woodworking is a dusty experience.
  • This is looking like a week full of opportunities.
  • My ice cream addition is surfacing again.
  • Time to enter the production zone while the weather sucks.

Living

What do you love about where you live? – A decent question from the Daily Writing prompt.

  • I love that I have woods and wildlife around me.
  • The home is just the right size for us. Not too big when it was just us and the cats, the perfect size for our children and us, and not too big for just us again.
  • Lots of my family and lifelong friends are still near.
  • I love that we have all 4 seasons.
  • I love being less than an hour from the Chesapeake Bay.
  • I love that I’m less than 3 hours from the beach in Ocean City.
  • I love that I’m less than 3 hours from the mountains in Western Maryland.
  • It’s been a great place to have a family and raise our children.
  • We live on a dead-end street so little traffic.
  • It was a great place and time to grow up in and old in.
  • I love a big pile of Maryland Steamed CRABS.
I could claw my way through a few of these. Photo by Mike Hartley

Just a peek

I’d like a peek at tomorrow, maybe I had one today?

I’d like a peek at tonight, the sun will soon be out of sight.

I’d like a peek at the weekend, it’s only Tuesday my friend.

I’d like a peek at September, with another trip to the beach to remember.

I’d like to hang onto these warm summer nights, as long as I’m not pulled out of my car and read my rights.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I thought I’d accomplish more today. But then again I think a lot of things.
  • There is no shortage of people willing to pass judgment on you.
  • There is no night like tonight. Out for a ride, I go.
  • I didn’t get the memo that some neighbors now own the road and have removed the speed limit.

Flashlight at ready

I’m getting slack and I’m going to have to tighten up. Too much time passing by without the tangible results I’d like to see. No better time than the present to get going. I hope the power stays on, I’d like to get some work done.

Ironically one of the first songs on this evening was the Eric Clapton “Let It Rain” cover by Peter Frampton and the Doobie Brothers which seemed so appropriate. Along with the tornado and flood warnings for tonight. The thing that I don’t like is that this is coming from the southeast and our trees are used to storms coming from the west and northwest.

I did have some time to learn more about the various cuts and bits with the Dremel tool. I’m learning to take my time. Started another dolphin carving for my granddaughter.

Time to get back to work, it’s eerily calm outside with the rumble of thunder around.

I’ve cranked out about 50 prints so far and hope to do another 50 before taking a break.

Be safe, be dry, and try not to drive through this stuff.

For a change, it’s going to Western Maryland. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Anytime I hear the song Aqualung by Jethro Tull I have a flashback to sleeping out overnight in the Capital Center parking lot for the box office to open for tickets for about 20 of our friends.
  • Make plans, and follow through with them, that’s living.
  • I’m sad I won’t hear Stephen Tyler sing again as recently announced. And sadder when I hear a Tom Petty song knowing he is gone.
  • The camera batteries are charged, time to put them to use.

Up and Down

Worried about a few things so not hitting the highs I had planned. That early morning cruise didn’t materialize, the heat impeded my outdoor progress and any thought about playing outside.

Days like today make me think about looking at a watercraft like this. Photo by Mike Hartley

But I’m making good progress on a few tasks like vacation printing and some woodworking. I have to find a place for the stereo and speakers I just hooked up and tested.

I’m getting a shooting map together for the next trip to the shore. I have a list I didn’t work much on while on the family vacation.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I hear thunder. This reminds me to check that generator this weekend.
  • Feeling good about the progress today.
  • Junk food is so good. Only in moderation so says a distant voice.
  • Contentment is the nice feeling while you’re working on something, not when it’s done.

MidPoint

The summer’s mid-point has been reached for me. Time to kick it into another gear and make the best of it. And what better day than a Thursday evening to fire it up? What to do, an evening of fun or productivity? Why not both?

A good evening for a late-night ride. We will have to watch the weather. It’s always a crap shoot this time of year when it gets so hot. Who knows, after a few hours I’ll probably be ready for bed being I’ve been up a long time today.

Sometimes I wonder what will be the last photo I take. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I forgot a friend’s birthday last year, won’t happen this year. I get a chance to recover in 2 days.
  • I should have retired earlier. It’s a lot of fun.
  • If age was an issue for Biden, it certainly is for Trump. Who says more bat-shit crazy stuff than DJT.
  • I believe everyone should have to pass a driver’s test after a certain age. And the test for having one should be tougher.
  • Do you ever get a really bad feeling? I do and it’s unsettling.

Cool it

We were recalling the days of no air conditioning for our kids last week. It’s just the way it was back then. Apartments didn’t have it. Our first home (which was new in 1961) had no AC. I guess it was into the 70s before we had the money for a room AC unit. That went in Mom’s room.

I remember sleeping in the basement because it was a few degrees cooler at times. Some nights just not sleeping. I guess that is where I just kind of adapted to the warm weather. Now it’s my friend. Gym shorts and hat.

Our first few cars didn’t have AC. And even when I did have it in my 2nd car I didn’t use it. I drove for 10 years without AC back and forth 100 miles to DC.

Practicing for Sunday. Photo by Mike Hartley

That doesn’t count the years I spent on the bike in summers. There are no tops or AC on motorcycles.

I still do to this day with the top down at every opportunity I get. Even today in central Maryland when it’s in the mid to upper 90s I’ll have it down.

I can imagine the total meltdown of society if the AC went out. My suggestion to the masses is, to get used to it because it’s getting hotter and hotter.

For instance yesterday I saw almost every other convertible with the top up and AC running. Whimps, they are. I love summer and the warmth.

Time for me to get outside and work on the tan and yard. Be well all.

SunMoonRise

Most all my sunrises at the beach last week were muted or nonexistent. There were 2 that were nice but the nights were clearer than the days but there were some storms also at night. One of the cloudiest and wettest weeks I can remember.

Last Thursday’s sunrise at the beach, reminded me of this morning at home. Minus the beach. Photo by Mike Hartley

No problem though, a good time was had and grandchildren are endless entertainment. Even when watching them nap. But what a scene when they are up and at’em. One of the movies that was playing that week was the original Ghostbusters. I started calling my grandson Gozer The Destructor. The destroyer of sand castles.

I don’t know how people are unhappy at the beach unless a hurricane is coming through.

Moonrise on 7/21 over Ocean City. Photo by Mike Hartley

I will be returning to the ocean, in August for a day trip or two of photography, fun, and relaxation. Mostly photography. There are several spots I would like to try that I haven’t shot from before.

It was good to get away, I feel kind of recharged and creative again. And now back at home base with both computers being exercised, the cameras snapping, and the printer humming along we are ending the month on a strong note.

Physically I’m doing more daily with the treadmill and weights, I just need to keep it up. And the combination of mixing both computer time and exercise seems to be beneficial. I used to keep them separate.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s one thing having strangers and delivery vehicles speeding down your dead-end street. It’s another when neighbors do it.
  • I got out of sorts for a few days. Not looking at all the opportunities I had.
  • My granddaughter is itching to get over and put a new height mark on the doorway of her age.
  • On the other hand, I feel like I’m getting shorter.

I have returned

I’m back from a wonderful week at the beach with the family. All are home safe and sound and life is good. I ate well and still lost 3 lbs. Guess that walking helped. And I didn’t overdo it with sweets and junk even though that was tempting.

Worked on my tan, my tickling abilities with the grandchildren, and a chance to talk to my children who haven’t been kids for some time but will always be “the children.”

We did the annual trip to Ocean City Maryland. Stayed at a condo that had a beautiful view of the Isle of Wright Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from a 6th-floor wraparound porch.

With children and grandchildren meeting us there last Saturday afternoon till pulling in the driveway this afternoon, it brought a smile to my face many times, and now as I sit here.

It feels so fortunate to have those moments. And I captured a ton of them but now its time to print. That will keep me busy most of the evening.

I hope to return soon to the beach in my convertible and capture some more images of the town, people having fun, and surrounding nature.

Going for a spin

Ah, the days of reaching under the dash to release the hand brake. An AM radio that would go in and out as you changed elevations and a hand-cranked window. No automatic door locks, you used your fingers. And if you look carefully this one has a unique knob. The heat came out at your feet. Big steering wheels.

My father had a 57 Chevy but it was gone before I could drive. Photo by Mike Hartley

I took something a little more current out for a spin. I can’t believe my Miata is 8 years old already. Still looks new to me. I think I’ll keep it till I can get historic tags on it.

Have a good afternoon all.

For the love of it

I just put the cover on the car because we have some storms coming, but tomorrow I’ll be in my element behind the wheel. I saw the tailpipe below and it inspired the title of this post. I saw it at the last Miata meet.

Temps will be in a much more tolerable range tomorrow so we can enjoy the miles. I’ll get out early and pull the cover off and do a little detailing. Then I’ll see if my better half would like to join me for a short road trip and maybe a lunch.

I live for summer days like the one ahead.

Set Sail

Sometimes in life, you enter a zone. I’m kind of inspired this month so far. I’m making some prints for family and friends this morning. But apparently, I’ve been slacking here because the stats are down a bit. No problem, I’ll just step up the effort a bit.

Cast off, Mr. Christian. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve picked up the Dremel tool a few times this morning. That is going to take some practice and learning some skills. Time to hit up YouTube. But I’ll keep practicing each day now.

I’ve got to dig out an azalea bush and put down some weed killer before it gets too hot.

I had a wonderful day with my children and grandchildren for a cookout at my son’s home yesterday. It was great fun and food. And we got sent home with leftovers so I’ll feast again today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was surprised by how light the traffic on the Baltimore Beltway on Sunday afternoon and evening.
  • Leave this place a better place for your kids – do it ONE VOTE at a TIME.
  • I love the honky tonk piano of Billy Powell on the song Call Me the Breeze.
  • Stay connected, it’s a lot more fun than the alternative.

Send it

Every once in a while it’s fun to watch someone send it. I haven’t seen this one send it but I sure would like to. Of course, there is a time and a place for it and a car meet parking lot isn’t one of them.

From Mikey and Mel’s car show in June. Photos by Mike Hartley

If any car needed a soundtrack it was this one. I think it might be the definition of a radical cam and a boatload of other performance parts equaling massive horsepower.

Maybe I’ll see some of these types out tooling around on this hot summer night in front of us. I had a choice a few years back. Muscle car or small convertible toy. I almost went the Hemi route but I’m glad I didn’t. First I’m bad with temptation and if I had that horsepower under my foot and a strong clutch I’d probably have some tickets and higher insurance.

As Dirty Harry said once “A man’s got to know his limitations” and as I’ve grown I’ve recognized I have some as we all do.

Let me go rinse the day’s dirt off and then put the tripod and cameras in the car and see if I have any luck with some night shots.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Does it feel like July is slipping by already?
  • I have figured it out. But I went upstairs and it was gone.
  • Anticipation is a bitch when it’s on the wrong things.
  • There it is again, this sense of urgency. It’s a little unsettling.

Vacay

Describe your most memorable vacation. – The Daily prompt inquires about more of my time.

Well let’s see, there was, nope can’t talk about that one. There was the one with my better half, well we won’t go there. And there were whoops, can’t divulge that one either. Then there was that trip to Vegas, oh, that’s right, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Truth be told, we are not rolling in cash so our vacations haven’t been of the extravagant kind but I hope they have been fun for the family. We usually take an annual trip to Ocean City.

Take me to my home away from home in OC. Photo by Mike Hartley

The trip to Vegas was for work and it wasn’t out of control. The trips with the boys have been a lot of fun and some of the craziest stuff that will remain between us or those who overhear some of the tails when my friends have a little too much to drink when we might be out in public.

This is tough because I’m recalling snippets of dozens of vacations and choosing even one of those is tough let alone a complete vacation.

I just thought of it and it’s not a particular vacation. It’s that moment when either my children or my wife say to me, “Thanks that was a great vacation Dad/Mike.” That is the moment I busted my ass at work for year after year to hear each time.

Almost time

This shot was from Ocean City last year on the 4th. We won’t be venturing out this evening though. Just staying in with my better half tonight. I grilled out a little while ago and the desert is waiting.

Bang, boom, good night. Photo by Mike Hartley

I should put some effort into my hobbies later this evening. July is off to a good start and I should keep it going.

Also going for an early start outside on Friday being the heat will be intense in the afternoon. I’ll pull the cover off just before sunrise and hit the road. Have a safe evening all.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The most important decision you make is what you do next.
  • I’m raising the old stereo system from the grave. It will be nice to hear those old speakers roar again.
  • Confidence is when you stop worrying about what others think. The trouble is so is arrogance.
  • There is only what you do.

Line up

Yeah, I park with these guys and gals. Just a shot from the Maryland Miata Club meeting this past Monday in Columbia. I’m enjoying both the chances to meet people and shoot their cars. And start learning more about my own and what I might do in the future with it.

A row of reds. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve only been to 3-4 monthly meetings but they also do rides and track events, scenic cruises, talk cars, swap and buy parts, give advice and support, and just have fun and be friendly.

Take a deep breath, Sir. Photo by Mike Hartley

I might just go to one of the track events just to shoot photos of the group. I took enough chances in my younger days. I don’t push things anymore.

I’d guess there were over 50 cars at the July meeting. It was a beautiful day

I’ll be putting a few miles on my own this weekend but the cover is going on it soon because the rains are on the way.

Nice Art, Nice Gentleman

I observed these two wonderful sculptures on Old Court Road for a while now. I tried to get a shot or two from the car but they were a distance from the road.

Yesterday I stopped at the edge of one of the two entrances to the driveway and started to take a shot from the fence line.

I try very hard to respect people’s privacy and property. Well just as I was starting to shoot the homeowner waved me down. So I entered and met a very nice gentleman whose name I wrote down but didn’t secure in the convertible down the road.

He was so generous with his time and allowed me to take a few shots of the carvings that I didn’t want to misremember his name. But I will stop and thank him and maybe drop a print in the mailbox. And I will update this post.

He shared a bit of history about the home and property as well as the people from Pennsylvania who did the carvings. If I remember correctly I believe he said they were done over 9 days.

They are nice works and made me think if I was capable of pulling off something like this myself.

It certainly would be an ambitious project. But I do have two oak trees in front that are struggling.

This is a real shed on the side of the property.

Parking it

It’s good to be back and it was also nice to take a break. One of my best friends invited us to their bay home for the weekend. We were only able to do one day but it was a very good one. A wonderful early breakfast and lazy morning on the porch before a bike ride. The bay was a bit rough for kayaking.

A shower and off to dinner at The Narrows Restaurant a short drive from our spot on Kent Island. Wow, a great dinner with best friends and our better halves. We ate so well and returned for a muted sunset but a fairly good light show of lightning.

Unfortunately, we ran into that mess about 10 miles from home and crawled the rest of the way. I thought about stopping several times during that span but thankfully there was only another car or two on the road so I just felt my way at a snail’s pace.

Only 8 hours left in the wonderful month of June. It’s been a great one and I’ll remember the many special days with my children and grandchildren. And the closeness I continue to feel to my partner.

I hope this July is filled with highs. There is always one tough day this month remembering a close loss. But many good days are already planned. But first, make the best use of the last of June.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • New production method. Only emergency stopping.
  • I feel like I look healthier with a nice tan.
  • Mirror check, haircut needed.
  • Time to warm up the printer. I gave it a rest yesterday.

Learning the ropes

What makes a teacher great? – The Daily Writing prompt asks a very good question today.

I’ve been a mentor at times but never a real “teacher.” So this reply is from a novice.

Rope City. Photo by Mike Hartley

I guess it starts with mental and physical strength. Listening and compassion. Communicating expectations and goals. Remembering you’re in a profession that is very important but vastly underrated while remaining very upbeat. One who builds on the curriculum in new and interesting ways. An incredible immune system from all the germs the rug rats are bringing in and spreading around. Incredible patience while at the same time being driven. A love of building youthful minds and reaching each one.

I think the ability to endure and keep finding the passion that took you to it in the first place. There must be an internal love of seeing students learn and progress. I’m probably missing a ton and I might just ask my children what I should have written because I consider both of them great teachers.

There are a few of the ups and downs of being a teacher. I know it’s a tough job. You love the children but you see the vast discrepancies in abilities and levels but have to teach them all at the same time. You see who is doing a good job at home and who isn’t by the children’s actions and communications which means you are teaching a lot more than is in the books on everyone’s desks. You are in the middle between administrations and parents and that is a very tough spot at times.

So many factors go into what you might consider a great teacher. Is it one in a poverty-stricken area that works with kids who probably are more hungry than interested or scared because they had gunshots through the night and can inspire these children to do better and greater things with just words and actions?

Is it those few teachers who are singled out for Teacher of the Year awards? Or the masses behind and beside those recognized who work just as hard, who won’t win awards.

I think a great teacher goes to work each day has the best interest of the children in their care and imparts as much knowledge and skill in the given time to every child. And despite our uproar about education, there are a gazillion great teachers in this country. My hat is off to them.

Beetlejuice

Just some morning Beetlejuice for your breakfast.

Blue bettles, white bettles, yellow bettles, oh my. Photo by Mike Hartley

The grandchildren are about to arrive at this homestead so no more posts till later today. It’s such a beautiful day I’m guessing we are going to be outside a good bit.

Open my eyes

Are there things you try to practice daily to live a more sustainable lifestyle? – The Daily Writing prompt asks.

Serious question. I wake up and I’m happy. But then I get hungry so I eat. Then I see my better half and I chase her, sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

I worked a lifetime and a half to sustain the retirement (we hope) that we are a few months into.

I stay in motion and in thought. I stay in touch with family and friends.

I laugh when I can. I listen to music when I can. I cruise when I can.

Speaking of that it’s time to pull the cover off the car and being it’s such a beautiful day throw the top down and burn some fossil fuels. And maybe a walk with the cameras.

Exercise is Essential. I wish I could say I do it daily. Photo by Mike Hartley

Heads up

I haven’t heard the rumble of thunder yet but I believe it’s coming. The equipment and tools have been covered or stored. Things that can be blown are secured.

My back has been feeling it from some time spent with the power washer today. But in looking at the concrete pads I cleaned I’m happy with the effort. Tomorrow should be the final section.

I’m making my grandson some prints of animals they can put by his crib and switch out for learning. I’ll give them to his father to take home this week.

I’m hoping the Yankees even up the Subway series tonight. I’d love to sit and watch the whole game but I’d like to make some progress on some prints, some work on a book, and now that I have a clean space on the workroom table maybe some Dremel time.

Some days when I look back I wonder where the day went. Sometimes I don’t feel that major accomplishment. That is usually because I don’t into account all the small stuff I knock out each day. When I look at the whole, it’s a much better picture.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I swear there is heroin in ice cream. Either that or the Freezer has a voice.
  • Sometimes a different view or a second look yields a diamond not seen originally.
  • Don’t delay, go with your gut.
  • I sense a practical joke coming tomorrow.

Still Here

An email today from the V Foundation reminded me that June is National Cancer Survivors Month along with a few stats. I’m one of the fortunate 18.1 million in the US which is 5.4% of the population. Since 1991 the cancer death rate has decreased by 33% it reads.

I’m going to send a shout-out to the University of Maryland Medical Center and the doctors and nurses there who still have me walking around today. Thank you again.

So far, so good. Photo by Mike Hartley

I was talking to an old friend who has had medical issues also and the appreciation and thankfulness for each day is kind of a blessing we are both so glad for.

On the other hand, it’s like this shadow that moves behind you. It’s there but extremely hard to get a glance at it. You don’t know how close or far away from you it is. You don’t even know what it is but you feel that danger.

I hope it’s never or a long time before I’d have to go through those doors again. Photo by Mike Hartley

To my friends who have passed from Cancer, I remember you, I say your name. To my surviving friends, I wish you continued good health. I’ve donated already to the American Cancer Society which means I’ll have to get one to the V-Foundation also soon.

I just had a good idea of how to salute an old friend so I got to run and execute. Have a great afternoon.

Missing it

I do miss riding a motorcycle. The convertible is very nice but that openness of a bike and nimbleness is a special feel. Each time I see a rider with a big smile on his face it takes me back to rides on local roads or when I’m heading to the Eastern Shore of Maryland the feeling of crossing the Bay Bridge and the open roads leading to the shore.

The smell of the salt water as you cross the Route 50 bridge into Ocean City. The quick temperature drops of a few degrees as the water-cooled air filters over you.

Rider entering Mikey and Mel’s cruis’in. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a delicate art of riding a bike. Lots of awareness is needed especially in this area. The power in those machines will test the rider’s skills if pushed. Road conditions have worsened. And the fact that due to Covid when everyone returned to the roads, a significant percentage forgot how to drive.

So while I long to throw my leg over a bike, put the kickstand up, twist the throttle, and go, I’ll just use my memories to satisfy that desire.

To those enthusiasts who continue that passion, ride safe, enjoy, and smile. I’m actively looking out for you. But always remember, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Stay upright, and live longer.

Backing into Monday

Yeah, instead of firing out, I’m backing into Monday. I might wash the car, cook some bacon, do a little carving or photography. I see a long nap in the afternoon in the hammock being I’ve been unable to sleep much this morning. I think I woke up at 1 am. Good thing I’m retired.

From Mikey and Mel’s cruisin meet this past Saturday. Photo by Mike Hartley

At the same time, I feel pumped and excited about creating something today. Maybe it’s just the musical inspiration I’m getting because I put the headphones on and the hard-driving rock & roll has my body moving in the chair.

Most of you are off again driving and diving into the new workweek. I’m doing the same but for myself instead of someone else. I love my schedule and commute, I can mix pleasure and progress at the same time, weaving in and out of each other.

I think this is the last week of work for my brother-in-law who is a few years older than me and finally retiring. I’m looking forward to some walks and exercise with him.

It’s so nice to unwind after a busy weekend and not have to think about someone else’s business. And given the level of chaos at my former employer (The Washington Post) I’m so glad I’m on the outside looking in.

That reminds me, I have to work on the career wall. The last piece came last month. The Post gave me a framed picture of the front page on the day I started. That along with other mementos and photos and the things from my first career with the local Times papers will make up a corner of my basement soon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Bon Scott could really belt out a tune.
  • A brief reprieve from the high heat today. I think I’ll spend it outside.
  • An early start to the day always feels good.
  • If you can be satisfied even on the toughest days, life is good.

When feeling blue feels good

I’ve been looking hard at other paint jobs and discovering what I’d like. Not that one is imminent but when it’s time I’ll know. And what better place than car meets? And it allows me to practice some photography along the way.

I probably still won’t go blue but this is a very nice shade with some great detailing above.

Engines keep the world running. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not sure which holds my interest more now. Cars or cameras. If I’m not driving them I seem to be shooting them. And learning more about both is a lot of fun. I hope to pick up some feedback on suspension changes when the time comes to replace the stock ones at the coming Miata meet-up a week from tomorrow.

The more I shoot the more I seem to enjoy life. I doing more experimenting with different settings than I have in a while. And that effort will continue today and into this evening. I’d like to get outside this night to work on some timed shots.

But first, the yard needs cutting. So out I go before the real heat of the day cranks up. Stay cool, stay safe. Well if I followed that advice, I wouldn’t have any fun now, would I?

A Pearl of Detroit

Casting a big shadow this morning at Mikey and Mel’s car show was this long white beauty.

I wouldn’t want to have to wash and detail this Caddy. Photo by Mike Hartley

I went early as did several people to beat the heat but that was a wish that didn’t come through because if you were in the sun at 8 am it was already getting hot. By 9:30 am when I left it was sweltering already.

Probably would have stayed a while longer but had another outside event to attend. I was one of the few convertibles out that I saw with the top down. I’ve mentioned before that I like summer.

I even spent some time in the hammock outside this afternoon. Yes, it was in the shade. I must have passed out because my better half woke me for dinner.

Low and not slow. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope you all either stayed cool or had more temperate weather. Now I’m just waiting for a late-night ride on a warm summer night.

Lookout

Good morning, just taking in the view and planning a great day. I have a ton of images to download and edit. I’d like to make use of this good weather and be outside a bit. There are several posts I’ve started that I should finish and publish.

I see you. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s going to be a busy weekend again filled with family and friends. Life is great.

Midweek restless

Still not sleeping well. Both the mind and body are still trying to be very active late into the night and early morning. I find myself sleeping in shifts some days. I’ll figure out a plan and see if I can get a grip on correcting it.

Rest easy big guy. Photo by Mike Hartley

A busy day of planning and some research. And some yard work as always. Knocked out some overdue items like sending some family photos to my children. Now I have to get to the prints that need to be made, but that will wait.

I hope to concentrate on capturing some new images tomorrow. Only one or two more zoo photos to share. Tonight I’ll watch a baseball game and then some shuteye for an early rise on Thursday.

Best nature side eye

Okay, enough of the clickity click. Yes after I got this shot I moved on.

SideEye – Photo by Mike Hartley

Pacing myself with outside activities today. Trying to remember that doing stupid things gets stupid prizes. So what better break to take than creating a post?

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I think I’ll wait to mow till this heat wave is over because I see no sense in helping the grass burn.
  • One of the great things about my home is the nature I get to see.
  • I’m waiting for the shade to come over the hammock so I can relax some more.
  • That segment on AI on 60 Minutes this past weekend confirmed my worry that this is a dangerous time in our history because technology is getting away from us. Among other things.

Okay

Another fresh start to the week. And what a week it will be with the heat. No problem for me, I like it warm. I’m guessing it’s no problem for these guys either, warm weather is more natural for them.

A busy week ahead is planned which is nice. Especially when it includes family and friends. I’ll be catching up with some old friends this weekend also.

Stilts. Photo by Mike Hartley

An evening to go out and do some detailing on my car now that the yard work is complete for the day. Maybe some carving after that. So let me get the worktable outside and get moving.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Good tanning weather.
  • Waiting to see some baby robbins out back soon.
  • Hard physical work isn’t a bad thing for the body as long as it’s not overdone.
  • We need to look harder at our priorities and think about the whole.

Busy

It’s good to be busy when you’re doing things you enjoy and I’ve been busy doing that. Thursday night with the boys, Friday morning and afternoon with our granddaughter, a dinner downtown, and a concert at Pier 6 in Baltimore for a great show by Little Feat with my better half.

Saturday we finished up with a trip to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore with our daughter and granddaughter. What a run of fun. And now I get a day to savor all the family time I’ve had lately by kicking back and doing little to nothing on Sunday.

Captured a few fellow creatures we share the earth with below on the iPhone. I also took my old Kodak with me but haven’t downloaded those yet. So be prepared to be bored with some more animal shots in the coming days.

Opposing views. So common these days. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll get right to the point. The Zoo is a great place to visit. Families and couples. Saw a few sailors that were visiting from Fleet Week. I didn’t realize the size of this place. I believe it’s 135 acres.

This has kind of inspired me to visit the National Zoo in DC sometime this year.

I’m guessing otters and children are in and out of the water at about the same rate. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was a good day for a swim.

I always feel somewhat sad for animals like this who belong in the wild. Photo by Mike Hartley

With temp about 80 degrees and no humidity the animals outside were active.

It’s a fine zoo and maybe I’ll get a chance to go with my grandson also someday.

Bad timing. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day.

  • Take advantage of each day.
  • Milwaukee shouldn’t be upset. Trump hates everything besides himself.
  • I believe I’ll enlarge my office. By cleaning out the junk.
  • It’s getting to be too much of an effort to keep in touch with some people.

Family

Describe one of your favorite moments. – The Daily Writing prompt asks us to recall.

I’ll just go with the first one that popped into my head. I was thinking of our family vacation because of the new beach towel my better half just got me.

We take the family to the shore each year and I was thinking of the feeling I have when we have finished a day at the beach and we are all out to dinner on the bayside, we’ve been served our drinks and everyone has decided and just ordered.

Just then, everyone is relaxed. The kids start talking and laughing. Grandchildren making faces at each other and laughing. I look across at my better half and see her smile as she watches and joins in. I sit back and smile and just listen to happiness and watch the sunset and savor those minutes before the food comes.

Each year I worked very hard to make things like that happen and those moments are the greatest gift I get in return. Well worth any sacrifice I had to make. And now I savor each one a little more.

A nice walk

My better half and I took a walk up some of the Number Nine Trolley Trail in Oella/Catonsville. Then we hiked up and down Old Ellicott City.

It was a day in the low 70s and a very strong breeze so it was a very enjoyable walk.

This bridge never sounds secure if you are walking under it and a car is going over it.

I think we got about 4 miles according to her phone.

The Patapsco has a ton of beautiful spots.

It’s great when there is strong wind working. Helps keep the nats and flies away.

I’m impressed with the maintenance they do on this trail. It’s a very tough one with lots of washout issues. Photo by Mike Hartley

I like getting down close to the water and listening to it roll over rocks.

Riverstone carving is in progress. Photo by Mike Hartley

Well, back out to do some fresh shooting today. This was from a wonderful Tuesday afternoon.

Took a walk on the Oella Trolley trail and Old Ellicott City and I’ll share some of that later today. Another errand to run first.
