Closing time

A full day and I’m tired, sore along with some new aches and pains. But it’s been a good day and one worth remembering.

Excuse me

Excuse me mam, I already have a few grandchildren to look after. Those are your responsibility even though they are in my yard.

So many deer lately. Photo by Mike Hartley

This might look nice, but I’m concerned with the increase in deer ticks and Lyme Disease in the area. So, if you are out and about, keep an eye on your body and that of the younger ones who are usually rolling around the ground.

Great Time

I got to spend a few hours with my daughter yesterday and it was fun just being the two of us. We enjoyed a great lunch at Mt Washington Tavern. Before this we always had a dinner there, so a lunch was a change of pace.

It’s a great place to eat and the service was wonderful. My daughter had Cream of Crab soup and a Shrimp Po Boy. I had Oysters Rockefeller, and the Shrimp Salad wrap, with truffle fries. And for dessert some chocolate and cheesecake bites. Then we walked around the town a bit. Thanks for a great day, honey.

We sat on a few of the benches around town and talked. I get so little one on one time with her I always cherish it. I enjoy hearing about her teaching profession and raising a daughter is always full of entertaining stories from her. I like seeing her smile and being relaxed.

There was a clay works school on the corner of Smith and Greely if memory serves me correctly. Photo by Mike Hartley

We made a commitment to get together more often. And I think we will stick with it.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When I get a lot accomplished, before sunrise, it’s a good feeling.
  • I hope I get to see my sister soon. But the odds are slim.
  • A day without a nice sunrise doesn’t seem right.
  • Making plans, following through, that’s living.

Cruise

Driving has always been one of the joys in life to me. It seems to be the passion of a good number of people. From classics to modern missiles, from domestics to imports, from compacts to full size, from beetles to monster trucks, from motorcycles to trikes. It’s all about hitting the road.

And I feel tonight might be a good evening to take a ride. A late Wednesday evening cruise to clear my head. The highways are open ribbons of engineering marvels when empty.

Being I don’t own a monster like the below beauty, I can easily cruise in stealth with the stock exhaust through the night. Enjoying the summer breeze with the top down.

Red Chrome and Blue. Photo by Mike Hartley

A lot of my friends use car washes now. I still wash my own and dry and polish it. I kind of enjoy it just as much as I did in the 70s when I was doing the same thing. It always feels good when the ride is shining.

I do need to call the mechanic though. My AC is on the fritz. Not that I use it much but it’s nice to have if I get caught in a summer thunderstorm.

As I was cleaning the trunk I ran into my old CD case and realized I had some music in there that I don’t have on the phone so maybe it’s an old school night on the speakers.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The rule changes have made baseball enjoyable again.
  • Looking forward to getting up each day, is living.
  • Let’s help turn this thing around.
  • Someone who seems to crave attention, looks and sounds like a punch-drunk fighter.

Reflections of yesterday

My better half and daughter had a wonderful day together. I love seeing that. And I know her mother and mine would love to see that relationship.

What a beautiful day it was. Mostly sunny but a few clouds gave me a break from the sun every so often. Spent some of it mowing which is my meditation time. I’m trying to relax a bit more and let go of some things.

Wow, the Prince of Darkness John Michael (Ozzy) Osbourne has passed. Another soundtrack of my life silenced. A couple of my favorite Ozzy tunes – ChangesMama, I’m Coming Home and of course Paranoid, Iron Man, I Don’t Know, Crazy Train, Close My Eyes Forever, No More Tears.

Doing this blog in relative obscurity isn’t a bad thing.

I think Stephen Colbert said it best to Trump – “Go F**k Yourself”

I love watching nature.

I hope the day ahead is a good one. I’m a bit tired and a little sore to start, but those will pass.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Still finding myself each day.
  • Comfort is King.
  • There is a lot to be said for feeling good.
  • Sometimes you can see better if you listen harder.

Doors of Frederick

Finally, I’m back on schedule for the Thursday Doors event. Hope this has been a good week for everyone.

As always, thanks to the creator of ThursdayDoors and please follow the link to Dan’s site for far more talented posts.

It’s been a bit since I visited Frederick Maryland.

Now that’s an entrance. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll have to make a point of returning there this summer.

I think I’ll try some night photography today.

I don’t think I’ve used any of these images on Thursday Doors before. I know I’ve included a few others in this town before but hopefully I was careful not to repeat any.

It used to taste great but it’s been a long time since a visit. Photo by Mike Hartley

I didn’t realize I had this many images, I should have made a gallery.

Take me

Take me to the sands of the Atlantic shore.

Well, maybe I’ll take myself. Running the sand between my fingers and toes, working my body into the sand through the blanket is my therapy. Soaking up rays and feeling that warm ocean breeze, sounds of the waves hitting the shore, feeling that cool rush of saltwater over my feet.

Sand and stones. Photo by Mike Hartley

Cruising Ocean Highway with the top down and pulling into Dumser’s for some ice cream. Or maybe one of the many great establishments providing a cold beverage and good meal. A visit to the marina to watch today’s catch come in from the fleet of charters or if I’m lucky enough to catch the White Marlin tournament which is one of the biggest on the Atlantic.

And of course, wandering the town with the camera from the inlet up to the lighthouse in Fenwick at the state line. A walk on the boardwalk for some people watching and maybe a game or two in the arcade taking me back to my youth. A walk out to the rocks at the point of the inlet and take in the view turning completely around a few times.

Back up the road to midtown and a stop at Fager’s Island on the bay to catch sunset and listen to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture perfectly timed to end when the sun disappears. Have a quick bite, listen to the band, maybe move my body to a tune and then point the magic carpet home.

Sounds like a good plan.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • There is a lot of wisdom in listening.
  • I think Phil Collins was an underrated drummer.
  • Just in case you haven’t noticed, the takeover is almost complete, wake up and act now before it’s too late.
  • I should have been a musician.
  • Sounds like someone is afraid of opening pandoras box.

Edge to Edge

Dolphins in this shot edge to edge. 4 in total off the Ocean City shore.

Fins. Photo by Mike Hartley

It kind of inspired me to schedule a few more days at the shore before the season comes to an end. Of course, for me the season doesn’t end till late October. We get some nice weather in September and October. The water gets a bit too cool that last month, but September is still good sunning and swimming weather.

I love watching dolphins, just like I like to watch the deer wander through my backyard. I grew up with woods behind my childhood home and I’ve lived here for almost 4 decades with woods behind here. I spend time looking out a bay window which gives me a grand view of our back and being it drops off so fast it’s a nice overhead view.

I’m always watching nature. Just saw a woodchuck on the way home this afternoon near the entrance of our neighborhood. So back outside I go to see what else the earth wants me to interact with.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • All Star game night. That kind of indicates the midpoint of summer.
  • When I was very young, I washed a lot of dishes. I guess I had a flashback while cleaning up from dinner this evening.
  • People are this never-ending puzzle I started long ago.
  • Going to bite the bullet and replace the old laptop. Now comes the difficult decision.

Evening came quickly

Another day in the books. Well for me it is, I’ll be hitting the rack shortly. My body is not cooperating today and I’m going to give it some extra rest.

Watching a sunset or sunrise with some is nice. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I think my granddaughter had a great day with us today. Mission accomplished.
  • When I roll my neck, it sounds like a truck going down a gravel road.
  • The division in people is getting very scary. It just seems to be brewing increased anger.
  • If I ever run out of different ice cream flavors to have, I’ll just start over again.
  • If this isn’t proof of needing to watch closely who you vote for, I don’t know what is.

Smooth

My better half returned home last night from a short trip. It was kind of fun having the house to myself for a few days. Speakers instead of headphones. Cooking things without worrying about the smell or time of day or night.

Bouncing down the stairs like a herd of thundering elephants because there isn’t anyone that could be disturbed or woke up. A few dishes were in the sink for more than a few hours. I had more real estate in bed.

But I’m very glad to have her back again. I didn’t know the answer to some of the questions I had.

Another hot one today. I need some water, not from the sky. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling for Texas.
  • Summers in Maryland are a lot like Florida without the hurricanes.
  • Either a lot of people don’t know, or know and don’t care. That is the only way I can figure out where we are today.
  • Yesterday was the anniversary of a difficult memory.
  • Bruster’s Orange Sherbet is a winner in my book.
  • Instead of investigating Bidens health, someone should check on the current resident.

Task to Task

It’s been a fun morning. The sun is up, the baby deer sleeping in my backyard has moved on and I’ve got a list of tasks a mile long to plow through. But I see we have some storms moving through this afternoon and evening.

I had thought about going to the ocean for a day, but obligations before pleasure, so maybe next week.

Angry water. Photo by Mike Hartley

Haven’t felt my best today. Maybe too much sun this morning. I’m staying the rest of the afternoon. This is the first summer I can remember when the heat is getting to me.

In the space of less than 2 miles I saw a Volkswagen Atlas run a red light, sit at the next light and miss it because they aren’t paying attention. Do 50mph in a 30mph zone and then an illegal U turn at one of the busier intersections in the county.

Never a dull moment on the roads.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Being happy is a decision. Like I’ve said, I haven’t made the right decision at times in my life.
  • Isn’t it amazing with some people that they are always right and if they aren’t it’s always someone else’s fault.
  • It’s taken me 6 decades, but I’ve finally learned how to relax a bit.
  • Feeling inspired for this evening.

Good Morning

Good morning, a simple phrase that I find used less often now. Others like good afternoon, good evening, how are you, good day, hello, have a great day and others are all becoming less shared.

People wave to each other less often also. I used to play a little game by making eye contact with people I’d be passing walking the streets of DC on my way to work from the parking garage. I’d smile and node and see how many would smile or node back. I was surprised how many would smile also.

Well, I’ll just continue to be me even if people choose not to respond.

Anyway – good morning.

Friday, need I say more

A fun day so far. Pictures from the kids and grandkids at the parade. A trip to the local ice cream spot with my better half. About to get the cushions for the deck chairs out and sit outside this evening a bit.

Not only is it a Friday, but it’s also the 4th of July. We passed on an invite to a parade this morning with the kids. But that doesn’t mean we won’t appreciate the day. I grilled out last night and I hope to grill out tomorrow night and through the weekend. Tonight, I’m kicking back.

We haven’t been out to fireworks for some time now. Not that we don’t have a lot of neighbors who are into private displays. I remember taking the kids to the county events when they were young.

A few years at work I got to go to the top of the Washington Post buildings in DC and watch the fireworks from the National Mall. The only benefit of working that holiday night.

Be safe this evening. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve pulled the cover off the car and took a ride to the hardware store. Good thing I have a convertible because I learned the AC has stopped working. I guess after 9 years an issue of some kind is due. Could just need a charge. I can’t remember having that done. Not that I use the AC much at all.

No problem at all. I love this car and will just fix things on it from here on out. I think I’ll head out late tonight for a long cruise.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • That Hot Honey Chicken Sub from Jersey Mikes is Goooood.
  • I like Backyard Billy’s just over the Bay Bridge in Grasonville.
  • Greed, fear and anger win again on Thursday.
  • Pain is coming.

Odd

Usually, I’ll do a few blog posts in the morning and at least before noon. Today has been different. I sat down this morning with a bit of writer’s block. That hasn’t afflicted me in a while. Then I got busy with other appointments and low and behold only a few hours till sunset.

Better late than never. I like keeping my daily streak going. Oddly enough it was the daily writing prompt that brought me to a stop. I’ll post the answer to that question later.

Spent part of the day getting a quote on some home improvement work and materials. Something that has been needed for a while and now we have those funds for it.

This evening, I hope to put in some time, providing our power stays on with that thunder I hear outside now, on practicing my pastel drawing and maybe some reading. I shot some wildlife earlier today but I’m not going to download it till after tomorrows shooting because I don’t believe there is much there. That was one big buck that I got a few shots of but the sun hadn’t come up yet and I didn’t switch the ISO so I’m not hopeful.

Here we are at the last moments of June. I’m proud I made better use of this month. I’m disappointed because I could do better. So, I’m going to finish strong tonight or just get a good jump on July.

Deer day care

My back yard has become a playground for young deer lately.

Of course Momma is always nearby and even if the young ones don’t spot me, she has eyes on me.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The less time I spend wanting, the happier I am.
  • When you get all the angry people together it’s bound to splinter apart with time.
  • The beard is getting grey. Doesn’t bother me a bit.
  • I had better get the sprinkler out for the kids to run through with the heat coming.

Doors of St Michaels

Just down the road from Easton where I shot last week’s doors is another beautiful town called St Michaels Maryland. One of my favorites in the state.

We had a short walk before the light rain started. But I hope I was able to capture a little flavor from this visit.

Go East

Those were some nice storms that rolled through early this morning. They got me out of bed a little after 2am. I did grab a quick nap this morning but now I’m off on the day’s adventures.

I got some of the yard cut today before the afternoon storms rolled through. Even got the mower put away, the shed closed, extra grass raked up and gas can, and oil was put away before the rain started. Boy did the shower feel good. It was so hot and humid. I forgot to wear a hat though and the top of my head feels a little warm.

I’m surprised the John Deere is still getting around this year. I was about to throw in the towel on it, but it will hopefully get me through this season.

Well enough about work. Time for FUN. And what is FUN? The Beach is FUN. And I see nothing but sunshine and heat for the next week after tomorrow’s storms. Of course, long term forecasts are subject to change but I’m going with the good news now and planning to point that Miata east till I see sand and water on one of the next 7 days.

I couldn’t have stagged this. I was tracking a sailboat just before this and posted that shot earlier. Then I followed this powerboat and I guess my timing was just right. Photo by Mike Hartley

Just like that

Another day flew by in an instant.

Shot a few weeks ago in Ocean City. Photo by Mike Hartley

And while there was no sunset viewable today, we can hope for tomorrow.

It was a gloomy day outside, but it was a grand one indoors with our granddaughter. I love that she is so relaxed and happy here. Running and playing, drawing and building forts. We play games, make treats and let her use her imagination. And we make sure she knows she’s loved.

Well, it’s game time so time to pull up the recliner and catch another close contest while getting the last fix of basketball for some time.

Firing out

Some feel the need, the need for speed. Not me, I’m cruising into the week. A good friend described his Monday and Tuesday as cramming a week into those two days. I’m so glad I don’t have to put the pedal to the metal like that.

This sucker was loud and fast. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not that I’m slacking, I’m just going at my pace. I have grand goals for the week, but possible jury duty awaits.

I’ve gotten off to a good start on the computer but I’m going to switch gears to keep my grandchild entertained and work on her creative skills. She loves her drawing room. And I love drawing with her.

Have a great morning all.

Airport congestion

This getting old stuff is filled with challenges. Today I have a couple aches conspiring against me, but that isn’t going to stop me.

I have a quick errand for a friend this morning and then lunch with my daughter. A couple of home things to attend to, but I hope I can focus on getting some work on my hobbies and read the book a friend recommended for my back. If it’s a good one, I’ll be raving about it here in the future.

As a father I’m thankful for 2 great kids. I’m thankful they are healthy, hardworking, smart, and loving parents themselves now. I’m glad they are better than me. They up the bar on my proud meter all the time.

I try to tell them I love them every chance I get. I write them often and we call and see each other when we can. I’ve busted my gut for them, and they are very appreciative of the efforts. It’s tough being a dad. I’ve taken the blame for stuff, I’ve always wished I could have provided more.

I probably/know of a few habits they could do without. I could relax a bit and I think chew quieter for my son. Hey, I enjoy my food.

Being a father has shown me rewards I didn’t know I had possible growing up. It’s also caused my beard to go grey before it’s time.

One of the many things I’m very proud of is how my children look out for each other. I’ve seen many families fractured but I believe these two will always be close, supportive and there for each other.

A good Father’s Day is waking up feeling confident that your children are happy in life.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel the need, the need for sand.
  • To all the fathers busting their behinds and making the effort every day, happy Father’s Day.
  • Being older is learning about adapting at the time in life when we are least adaptable.
  • I wonder what percentage of people say, “thank you Siri”?

Last of the sun

I know flowers like the rain. And there is a good bit coming. But they also like the sun. It started to get a bit overcast as I was finishing up outside. So, like them I was just soaking up the last few minutes of sunshine.

We went out to dinner at Ledo Pizza and then to the Snowball stand for a treat before the rain started. As I sit here yawning, I know it won’t be a late night. But then again, there is a baseball and basketball game I would like to see.

Brightening up my afternoon. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s been a good week and I’m looking forward to the weekend. I do have to get out and get some new images regardless of the weather. That just might be my focus. How do people handle the rain.

I guess I could capture some scary car video of people attempting to drive on wet roadways. They can’t do it in dry conditions, so you are guaranteed some good footage. That would be too easy though. I’ll have to see what I can come up with.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • With the rain I sense a creative streak at the easel coming this weekend.
  • It’s been a good year. But the best is yet to come.
  • I really have to finish a project for my granddaughter.
  • This is one unique neighborhood.

Smoking hot

Ah that first 90 degree day of the year. Kind of late I’m thinking for this area. I spent most of the day power washing and cleaning yesterday. A good physical workout.

I didn’t get a chance to take the go-cart for a spin while the sun was up but today is another chance. All I need to do is grab the keys and go. It will be the last warm day for a bit.

But first another round of power washing. Today is the back siding, gutters and walls. Oh, another section of sidewalk and steps also. Then that unit is put away till I take it to my son’s home and help him with his deck. It’s a training mission so when I get too old, he can come do my home.

I thought I’d brighten up the mid afternoon with a little color before I head back outside to swelter in the heat. So here is a shot from St Michaels Maryland of Simpatico Italian goods.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A beautiful moon out this week.
  • One of these years I’ll start using sunscreen.
  • I’ve got to increase my level of exercise.

Easton

We spent late afternoon and early evening in Easton Maryland last week. As we wandered down the streets which was mostly rolled up for a Thursday night except for the restaurants and a few stores, I thought I’d practice some Street Photography for an hour before dinner.

Easton is a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, in the heart of Talbot County.

In 2023 there were 17,225 people living there. Two of them are my friends from many decades ago.

I like it because it has a lot of things art related.

It’s an easy town to walk also.

I have yet to sample all the great eating establishments there. The few I have tried have been great.

Lots of shops for my better half to look at while I photograph.

Lots of county office buildings from the past and some quite new.

I’m not much for city life but I could see this town growing on me.

I find it to be a very friendly place.

Also a very patriotic town.

Bricks or a gate everywhere you look.

Frederick Douglass / Liberty below.

I have to stop walking and shooting at the same time.

We will make a return trip this summer or fall and maybe stay at the Tidewater Inn below.

Well, too many photos. Hey, there is no such thing as too many pictures. So one last one.

Maybe another post after the games tonight. If not, have a great evening.

Call it a day

I was out working in the yard wishing I was looking at this view in Ocean City Maryland. I will be soon again, but not today. I am working on my tan as I tend to chores.

From the inlet looking north. Photo by Mike Hartley

But like any smart senior, I’m pacing myself with a break in front of this box. And one can’t forget the trips to the kitchen to make sure the fridge is still working, and the ice cream isn’t melting.

The clock keeps turning like these wheels in the wind. Photo by Mike Hartley

After some weeding, leaf blower action, deck maintenance and raking. I’m about done for the day. I’ve aggravated the nerve in my neck and I’m paying for that now and maybe into the evening.

Such is life, I’ll adapt and move onto something that won’t irritate it. Have a good evening.

Envy

Actually, I envy this man. Living in a small town and having the ease of riding around on one of these bikes. Caught him on the streets of Easton Maryland late afternoon.

Easy Rider. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve always liked the eastern shore of Maryland but I’m falling more and more in love with it. And this summer it will be a common destination for the Miata and I to cruise and explore.

Envy is something I don’t spend a lot of time on, but I can’t say I’m without it at moments in my life. I try to stay busy appreciating all I have and building on that.

Usually, it’s just a moment. About 10 minutes before I saw this rider above, I passed this Vette parked on the street. Of course, I paused because I love automobiles. It’s a convertible, 2 seater, sporty and handles well along with some get up and go. So right up my alley.

I have to add a garage before I’d get one of these. Photo by Mike Hartley

Nice but I don’t need the tickets and attention. Nor do I want to risk the high speed runs I’d have to feel it do. I can probably buy 3 of my Miata’s for the price of this one. And so far, that fun machine with the manual transmission has satisfied my motoring needs.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I had a great evening with some friends. And one fixed great Rueben sandwiches for dinner. Nice way to start a week.
  • Warning – Idiots at the helm. See RFK Jr. for instance.
  • I have a lot of productive ideas. Now I’ll have to see if I have a lot of productive follow-through today.
  • I opened the work shed earlier than usual today. I’m coming for you Mother Nature.
  • I’ve seen my buddy “Box Turtle” more in the last few weeks than in the last year or two. I wish he would make an appearance when the grandkids are here.

Direction of the Day

I’m off to an early start and being productive this day. I thought this was a good photo to lead off a Monday with. I wish the wind vane and plane direction were a little more aligned, but it was close. I shot it in Easton Maryland last Thursday.

The plane has found the tailwind. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve been experiencing issues all morning with my Verizon Fios TV signal. I’m going to give them a call in a moment to get a tech out again. Since the upgrade, there’s been several issues.

It’s too wet to cut grass so that will have to wait another hour. Which puts a smile on my face because I will have some more time to create.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The wildlife around my home seems to have increased this year. I guess they find us nature friendly.
  • Feeling bad about one sick grandchild. Feeling good about a picture of the other 2 looking cute on a Monday morning.
  • Funny how things come full cycle. As with most older people, I take meds daily and it’s never been an issue. But lately I’ve been getting a few caught going down. Usually, the first one. Then I laughed and remembered what I would tell my mother. Take a good sip of fluid first to wet the tunnel. Been easier since that.
  • Suddenly, I have a deadline for something.

No time like now

A fairly productive day but why stop now with 3 hours to go. I’ll knock out some editing tonight and work on making some prints for several projects. Just installed some better lighting in the workroom so that hopefully it will help with my design skills or show me my errors earlier.

From the inlet to uptown, I love it all. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was great getting to the beach for a few days this week. And the perfect weather we had was a nice stroke of luck. I’m pretty sure there is going to be another day this month where the forecast is perfect, and I’ll be pulling out well before sunrise so I can spend the day soaking up the sun and environment.

Maybe sit down and pick some crabs, enjoy an ice cream soda, cruise the town and photograph the day away.

We are beginning to sail into summer. Photo by Mike Hartley

But till that day comes I should get back to some local photography, so I’ll head out tomorrow for some new images.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My first grandchild will be completing kindergarten soon. Excitement for her because of how she looks at learning and made many friends. Papa is so proud, and a bit shaken by how fast that time went from holding her as an infant.
  • The importance of something depends on your perspective.
  • Sports used to be inspiring to me. And it is at times still. But the gambling focus and ads are killing it for me. I’m not sure it’s done the fans any favors and I’m guessing the players feel a lot less safe now. I find that sad. I think I’ll try to catch a little league game this week at the local park.
  • I should make a schedule for the week.

Home again

We took a few days away from home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland this week. Some beautiful weather, beautiful sights, great food, restful evenings and worked on my tan in the sand.

Much has changed and much has stayed the same in my favorite beach town. I wasn’t in town but a few minutes when I saw a new sign going up. And I really like the message.

By the time we walked to the end of the boardwalk, stopped for a snack, the installation was complete on the way back for this shot.

Like the sign says. Plus it’s a Friday. Photo by Mike Hartley

Life is good but the yard needs cutting. Oh, it’s raining, what a shame. I guess that chore will be moved to Saturday or Sunday weather depending.

But first downloading some more of the shooting I did last night and today in Easton and St. Michaels Maryland.

On second thought, I think I’ll go finish the second half of that shrimp salad sandwich and pretend I’m feeling that cool ocean breeze.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve discovered I shouldn’t go shopping alone for the grandchildren. I would overbuy.
  • I’m loving this feud between Musk and Trump.
  • I wish we could put out a sign that says, “this state is full.” Traffic is out of control.
  • My daughter got me a sign for my office. “The only B.S. I need in my life is: BEACH & SUNSHINE” – I love it.

Life can be hard

Some days feel like chopping through mountains. I hope today isn’t one of them.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A clean desk means I ran into a creative block.
  • If you want batshit crazy, tune in Truth Social.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Making the best use of the day is really living right.

The contrast of mother nature

Overnight rains were so quiet they weren’t heard.

Morning mist and fog, and the sun trying to break through and burn it off.

But transitioning back into a very stormy evening ahead with a flood watch and 40 mph gusts. Mother Nature always has her own schedule and plans.

Be safe out there if you’re kicking off your weekend this evening.

And no, this old guy hasn’t been overdosing on the Weather Channel. I’m just into Mother Nature.

I’ve heard of this

When I was young there was a phrase when you lost a race badly. It was “Getting your doors blown off.” I guess this race was a little closer because they are still attached.

I’ve never owned a yellow car. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve never owned a yellow car. I’ve owned a white one, a blue one, a green one, a black one, a red one, a gold one, a maroon one, a grey one and even one with stripes.

Enough about cars tonight. I’ve got a long evening of writing and printing ahead. Maybe catch a few minutes of NBA playoff ball and then hopefully a few hours sleep. That has been difficult to come by till complete exhaustion sets in and then its still broken.

Where’s my heat

Memorial Day weekend and temps in the 60s and low 70s making one think of early spring, not the brink of summer. I still got outside in shorts but having to put on a sweatsuit jacket for the morning errands isn’t right.

Pain became an issue this weekend. I started off in poor spirits mentally also but changed that. I fired up the grill, saw the children and grandchildren for a short bit.

And here it is midweek and the temps in the low 50s today and rain are not my idea for the end of May. Unfortunately, the pain is still a companion. Time to make that orthopedic appointment.

I need sun to work on my tan and loosen up this tightly wound body. I need some sand for a bed. I hope next week looks better because this one is a wash.

Winds and Sand. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m frustrated that I haven’t been interacting with other bloggers more often. Time has been flying by and consumed by many other priorities. Some planned, some not. Like making a speech soon and having little time to prepare.

Trying to work through issues from Friday through this morning with TV, Internet and phone because Verizon wanted to change hardware. They resolved the phone issue when the tech showed up today quickly on the outside connection.

I’ve been so busy and tired that I’ve slacked on my blogging and photography. I’ll have to work harder to get back into the swing again.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Today I think about the loss of my mother 14 years ago. Time does not heal all wounds.
  • Pardons for sale. See 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
  • I’m glad I didn’t have to teach my kids how to push a car downhill and hop in and pop the clutch to get it started.
  • I can use pain creatively if it’s in the past. I struggle with it in the present.

A simple day

Simple life is a lot of fun. I know a lot of people who have a lot more and they don’t seem happier than I am. I’m sure there might be some, but the more I see people have the more their focus is away from what is important in life.

I was going to get busy with the actual housekeeping by vacuuming the basement and maybe purging a few things but instead did some cleanup on the computers.

Verizon is here upgrading the hardware in my home. So I’m using the phone as a hotspot to get some connectivity.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I see it’s National Photo Month. I’m just late to the party. Guess I should get my behind in gear.
  • Being retired can still be a lot of work.
  • Someone in Falkenstein Germany has taken a great interest in this blog. I notice because I have so few steady visitors and a few new ones from time to time. So hundreds of views in a day or two stand out.
  • Lots of people celebrate surviving cancer. That is a fine thing. But being a cancer survivor, I think the real brave ones are the ones that didn’t survived the surgeries and treatments and suffering.
  • Trump and his cronies are idiots and incompitent F**Ks. Just my opinion. While I still have a right to it.

Mixed Doors

Good morning and welcome to Thursday Doors. For a change of pace, I’m posting on the day this challenge was meant for. I’m trying to accomplish more and if I let less slide, I get more done.

Life and poor weather got in the way of shooting some new images so I’m using up some old photos that I hadn’t posted in this before.

As always, thanks to the creator of ThursdayDoors and please follow the link to Dan’s site for far more talented posts.

Up or Down

Looks can be deceiving. Is this flowing downhill towards me or downhill away from me. For a minute I had to remember where I shot this. The water is actually flowing towards me.

Rocky Gap State Park. Photo by Mike Hartley

Kind of wondering which way this day will go in terms of direction. I’ve got a blood draw, but otherwise pretty much a free day. I’ll have to come up with a few photo assignments for myself.

First light. Sometimes this low light displays a deeper color. Like watching a sunrise before it breaks the horizon. Sometimes those are the most wonderful colors.

They look softer in this light. Photo by Mike Hartley

And then there is the full sun. I hope to soak up some rays today because the sun will pull a disappearing act for the next few days I’m told.

These Rhododendrons used to be one of my moms favorites. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Temps in the 40s in late May in unacceptable. It’s ruining my morning vibe.
  • Utilize the tools you have and build more tools.
  • I feel I’m the only one not in a hurry some days.
  • Had our first solicitor come to the door since I put up the No Soliciting sign. Good thing I was asleep because I would have asked why I would buy something from someone who can’t READ and point to the sign. The ironic thing is that the same guy saw me outside later in the morning and I saw him coming into the driveway and I said, “no thank you” and he turned around, not knowing my better half already told him no already. Good thing I didn’t know that or politeness would have been left behind. Because at that point he can’t read or hear so he’s cruisin for a bruisin on that little hoverboard he was riding.

Here’s looking at you kid

This summer I’ll be working on my automotive photography in addition to the nature, street and whatever else it is I can capture. I’ve always had a passion for cars. Mostly driving them but appreciating their beauty has also been satisfying.

Nice eyes. Photo by Mike Hartley

Instead of the normal whole car shots I want to learn to capture the special design, color, modification and angle that defines a feeling.

Some of the colors available now are unique. Photo by Mike Hartley

I used to look at car magazines when I was younger quite a bit. But I’ll be dammed if I remember the special photo aspects that made shots great. So, I’ll have to keep practicing but look for others work and see how they are covering the same event. And how I can differentiate mine and keep it special.

The show at Mikey and Mel’s has a lot of variety. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’d certainly like to continue to get shots of the Maryland Miata Club meetings and give out prints. They seem to be very appreciated, and I like doing it.

Of course I’ll always be looking for light hearted messages from the motoring community. Warning though, they can be opinionated. Photo by Mike Hartley

Luckily for you guys the next few weekends won’t have time to hit any shows but June should be an active month.

Workout

Some go to the gym. I go out the door, open the shed and there is my gym equipment. I spent longer than I would like working outside yesterday. But that was then, there is more work to be done today. Today was leg day. Translation, mowing the lower back HILL.

This week we go back to working on arms when we get the pressure washer out.

But first, I’m going to fire up the grill and have a nice dinner.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • This has been a cool May.
  • Smile, it avoids difficult questions.
  • I’ve been very tired lately.
  • I didn’t get to an important goal this morning.

Easy does it

My schedule is easing up a bit this coming week. Or at least I think it is, but life happens. Right now, there are only 2 appointments scheduled but I have to make a few more for estimates on some home repairs.

I hope to get outside more if this rainy weather clears out. I’m taking the cover off the car and giving it a bath because Sunday and Monday are supposed to be nice, and I’ll want to get out with the top down for some therapy sessions.

I haven’t spent a day on the water fishing in a while. And I’ve never fished here at Lake Habeeb. Reports of good largemouth bass. Photo by Mike Hartley

Part of this Saturday will be filled with yard chores. But I do hope to get out later and collect some new images to share.

Ah, there is it, I can see sunlight through the windows finally. So let me get away from this device and get this body moving.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s been feeling like the Amazon Rain Forest around here.
  • I’m working on a new and improved version of me each day. Well, most days.
  • I love getting older. I’m not so in love with the side effects.
  • Scheduling medical stuff is sometimes more painful than the appointment.
  • I have two errands to run this weekend. The Snowball Stand and Bruster’s Ice Cream stand.

Door time again

Found a few old ones to share for Thursday Doors. From grey to some color. I was going to do some shooting today, but it cleared up and my son took me to a ballgame with his son.

I’ll have some new work to share next week.

It has hinges, is it a qualifier? Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s a good thing I have a small body of work to draw from once in a while for these challenges.

Short Trip

We took a short trip on Monday and returned Tuesday so I’m feeling a bit refreshed. The visit to the Rocky Gap resort was fun and relaxing. We hiked several miles along the Lakeside Loop Trail. We had some good steaks for dinner. We spent some time in the casino and came out only down $10. Normally we walk out winners but not this time.

The drive there was sunny and pleasant. The drive home, not so much.

It’s a beautiful place to stay. We had a room on the 4th floor overlooking the lake.

Hiking around the lake and that is what we did on Monday while the weather was nice. We lost the sun to the cloud’s midafternoon and the nice breeze we had at the start faded. I’m glad we are both healthy enough to get out and hike a little bit.

Good Tuesday morning

Some days are meant for this. Today is not one of them, here in Maryland.

Photos by Mike Hartley

I’m following up on that blue theme from yesterday. I wish it was a sunny day where the top could be down.

It’s going to be a busy day of editing. But that means I’ve done some shooting, so life is good. Catch you all later today. Lots of goals to accomplish.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve got to start writing my memories down.
  • I love sunshine when it comes through the window and cast a shadow next to you.
  • Some of the simplest photos of mine have great significance to me. I bet it’s that way for a lot of people.
  • I’d better get out of this computer chair and get some real work accomplished today.

Blue

The sky on Saturday was a beautiful clear shade of blue. Every once in a while I see a shade of blue here on earth that throws a challenge flag to the sky and says here I am. Clouds today and much of the week will obscure that bright blue that comes in spring on low humid days.

I bet lots of people can picture themselves behind the wheel in that. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m taking things a bit more relaxed this week.
  • Despite the coming rains, I hope to spend more time outside this week.
  • I lost my discipline and I put on a few pounds. I’m back on track and shedding that now.
  • Working on my education this week is a priority. But so are some fresh images.

Saturday Speed

Went to the car show at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn this morning. Met up with a very old friend from the neighborhood we grew up in. We also graduated together but lost touch after high school. We are both into cars and always have been.

Both of us really enjoyed the reunion and will be meeting together again. Oh, be forewarned, I have other car photos to share.

This was the only car at the meet that wasn’t showing any pollen on it.

I saw a saying about kids the other day that made me think I haven’t lost the total child in me.

I don’t mean to interrupt people. I just randomly remember things and get excited.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Feeling invigorated again.
  • How long can Fox News keep up the charade? Only time will tell.
  • Sun and a weekend, what more can we wish for.
  • The calm before the storm should be called not the storm.

Peaceful day

Along the Patapsco yesterday morning I came upon this green scene. I hope to take another walk along the Thru Trail and hopefully catch some wildlife tomorrow.

Today I have an acre of property that needs attention. I’m about 2/3 of the way through it and some other maintenance, but I think I’ll finish the rest tomorrow before that hike.

Things got green quickly. Photo by Mike Hartley

The grass was so long I had to cut in low gear. Boy, was it nice doing it on the rider again. That would have taken twice as long with the push mower. I do have to do the lower hill with the push, till I get that path to the lower back made.

I guess summer is on simmer because it certainly isn’t getting off to it’s usual early start here in central Maryland. Have a great evening.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Kids do the cutest things.
  • For being in a drought area, I’ve been cutting the grass fairly often.
  • I hope these trees are finished shedding soon.
  • Time to pull the cover off the fun machine.

A May Goal

I’ve got to get to the beach this month. And one of the spots I love to visit is the Dumser’s Dairyland Ice Cream Soda Fountain and Restaurant. I love their cheeseburgers and follow that with my favorite Cherry Ice Creams Soda.

This dining room is packed with families when the season gets rolling. We were there during the offseason, I still have to stop for ice cream. Photo by Mike Hartley

Another goal is to get back to shooting. I’ve been my own worst enemy and allowed things to interfere with that effort. I’ve done a little the past few days but it’s time to step it up. I also have to take one of my Nikons to Service Photo for a cleaning and checkup.

I think I’ll head out now for a couple shots in between the storms rolling through.

Monday salutations

Making the best of a cloudy Monday morning.

I was much more into Sunday’s sunrise over the ocean than the mist filled one this morning. I grabbed a snapshot 5 minutes apart starting at 5:57am from the Grand Hotel webcam yesterday. I’ve stayed at the Grand Hotel in Ocean City before and been very pleased.

I thank them for the great view most mornings.

I must prepare for a family invasion later this week. That means prepping the basement and moving a little of my studio into the office. Also locking the workroom and taking care of the mess, I create.

This will be the first gathering of all of us at the same time with the new baby. I better charge the camera batteries and get the tripod set up for a group shot.

I hope the weather is good because one of them is going to demand a tractor ride.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I can’t believe I’m interested in reading the AARP magazine.
  • Wishing those who celebrate, a happy Cinco De Mayo. I have two friends on vacation that are making up for any lack of celebration on my part.
  • I’m too old to be practicing my mechanical skills.
  • Sometimes pain is just exhausting, not just physically but mentally.

Road Trip in ?

In 4 days the Cruisin’ Ocean City event starts. There are two possible conflicts this week in the way of doing a day or two in town. The first is they moved the event up two weeks this year. And the long-range weather doesn’t look comfortable for my convertible. More like early spring temps with a chance of rain on the day I was going to drive down.

The second is we may have to be available to help a growing family. Again, the date changed and moved it closer to the birth of our granddaughter this week. And family is always a priority.

So, I may just have to look forward to the October event, my monthly club meeting and the local car shows till then. We will play it by ear as some say.

I wonder if the early date will affect attendance?

Not a bad Friday

This morning was a little cool, but it warmed nicely.

Took a hike with my brother in-law who is also retiring. I can see us doing these walks regularly in the future. Except in the dead of winter. This shot was about 13 years ago. We went over some rocks today but not like these.

We can walk a good distance, but gymnastics over trees and streams are limited. Photo by Mike Hartley

  • NBA Playoffs – The time of year they add defense to the game.
  • What a beautiful time of year.
  • I wouldn’t be paying for Aaron Rodgers salary next year if I owned an NFL team.

Practice

It’s car season again here in the Mid-Atlantic. I went to the Maryland Miata Club meeting on Monday and took the opportunity to practice some shooting. There is another big show at Mikey and Mel’s in Maple Lawn this Saturday, and if time allows, I’ll be there also.

So, buckle up and close that hood. It’s driving season again.

Time to spread your wings and escape the shadows.

Then roll out and hug the pavement.

Ready to breathe fire and hug the corners.

You might hear some AC/DC Back in Black.

So, take a number and take the top off and cruise.

Get a good grip on that wheel, lean back and hit the button.

Raise those tail feathers and put it in gear.

All photos by Mike Hartley

Next meeting I’ll just concentrate on body lines.

Tanked

My tank is full and ready to go. It would be nice to ride a bike again, but those days are probably behind me now. But my mind is ready today and regardless if the body wants to cooperate or not, I’m about to release the clutch.

I saw this beautiful color tank in Westminster Monday. Photo by Mike Hartley

I do have to squeeze in some chores for the yard and home, but the cameras will be out again today. It’s a bit cool and windy but I won’t let that deter me.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • There is a fine line between relaxing and laziness.
  • The clouds are moving faster than I am this morning.
  • 2 realities being spun is one too many.
  • Love regardless of the situation.
  • I know I shouldn’t cook that pack of bacon. But I can’t resist.

Monday is a wrap

I had the best lunch ever with my daughter today at one of our favorites, RockSalt Grille. And a lovely walk around the town of Westminster after that.

I couldn’t be prouder of my children. The talk was the best. It’s so rare we get the one-on-one time where it wasn’t rushed with one of us or both having to go somewhere, or she wasn’t tired from having worked all day.

Between this afternoon and the car meet I probably shot over 150 frames. The club meeting gave me a chance to practice my photography and meet some new people. Actually met 3 first timers. I just edited and posted 59 pictures I shot on our FaceBook group.

And no, the car below is not part of the Miata group. I was peeking between buildings and caught a glimpse of this and had to come around to see this work of art.

It probably needed a paint job anyway. I hope they didn’t use watercolor. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Tomorrow is more work than play, see I’m trying to bring balance to the universe.
  • I decided not to listen to one falsehood today. Feels pretty good.
  • The attic calls me tomorrow.
  • I didn’t get the cover on the car in time before the rain.
  • I can see tough times ahead. I guess it’s good we have some previous experience.

Barely keeping up

I took a break Saturday and laughed with friends and ate well (broiled crabcakes and fried oysters) while watching a scenic view. And though it was a misty, cloudy and very windy cold day in mid-April it was still a good break from the norm.

Sunday just a few chores and some good family time. I should have worked harder, but I have a few hours to try to finish the day strong.

Today is booked with great things for a Monday which makes it kind of a bonus.

No cropping, just a little zoom-zoom. I’m just starting to get busy with the Nikon P950.

I believe my friend who was looking up the ship positions on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday said this one was a car container ship. Probably had just dropped the load at the Port of Baltimore.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • It feels strange to like Mondays, but retirement put a new perspective on them.
  • Today I got back on my photography horse.
  • This is going to be a great week.
  • It still boggles my mind that RFK Jr was confirmed. And his policies continue that process.
  • Beautiful sunrise this morning at the ocean. Wish I was there.

Sure

Rolling down the boardwalk, soaking up rays, enjoying the sights. Yeah sure, I could do that. I enjoy riding as much as anyone. Spent a lot of time in a bike seat. Both pedal and motorized. From my own legs to 1100cc, I’ve always loved 2 wheels.

I only saw this one rider with the OC Ryderz. We didn’t rent bikes there on our last visit. I’d like to buy some and get a carrier for them. But having had surgery on both shoulders I think my days of hanging on to ape hangers are over.

For as much as I cruise this town when there I wonder if I could get membership for my Miata.

One of my friends had those ape hanger handlebars when we were young. Not for the faint of heart if you’re going to do any trail riding. Almost suicide, at least you won’t go over the handlebars, you will catch them and take the bike flipping over with you.

So I’ll be on the plain jane old man single speed bike with the nice cushioned seat. Ride safe regardless what you ride and where.

Good morning

I’m no food expert. I know what I like, and I like to eat. And food doesn’t move so it’s an easy target to photograph. The trouble is my own discipline. I see food and I eat it. So, my goal this year is to practice patience in eating, to capture some more food shots. And while doing that share some of our favorite spots.

Breakfast Favorites

Ah, I wish I was on my way to the ocean again. Because then I could stop at a little diner, we like on the way to the shore like we did last week. The Easton Diner is our go to stop. It has the old time feel, service and food are great and fast.

This was my bacon and cheese omelet. And yes, that is my unhealthy white toast with butter.

I think I’ll hit a local breakfast spot this week. My better half recently went to Cozy Cafe and Bakery on Main Street in Ellicott City and liked it a lot. But first I think I’ll hit an old spot just across the bridge called The Trolley Stop.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve kept a healthy weight most of my life. I did get sloppy for about 15 years though.
  • Up late for the game and up way early with the body complaining. I’ll pay for that later I suspect.
  • I can’t believe it’s below freezing this morning on April 8th. And with the wind it feels like 19 degrees. Way too cold for this time of year.
  • I’ve always wondered if my dad would be proud of me.
  • I never thought I’d have to think about becoming a prepper but some signs of society norms falling makes me wonder.

Semi Back

We just returned last night from a few days at the beach. We haven’t been away this year and needed a break because it’s going to get boo-koo busy soon. What am I talking about, it’s been busy as hell so far this year.

Semi Back is a good title for my own back. Some days the spine and muscles work well, others it’s a pain. Another post or two are possible and that’s semi back into my blogging routine. I didn’t do much shooting while away so I should continue to pick up the cameras more today and get back in that grove.

The beach is one place we will always be back. Well, as long as that thin strip of land on Maryland’s eastern shore is there.

Saturday struggle

Finished washing the car and cleaning the rims, dusting off the interior and glass. That always makes me feel good. I started the day off in a funk. Just a lot to work out mentally. Isn’t that always the case though?

A nice ride this afternoon to split up some home/yard chores. Then another quick trip to pick up a prescription that turned into a 45 minute ride.

On the edge

Friday mornings are sweet with a beautiful sunrise. On the other hand, the season for the Maryland basketball team came to an end last night at the hands of Florida. So, It was a great morning and afternoon because our grandson and son were visiting today.

I love having them over. It was a great day, and it keeps me from drifting into the rage the news brings about in me. I’ll relish in the things I taught him today. He saw a ladder I had out for pulling the final things from that attic.

I taught him about where to position and move his hands along it. How to use each leg and make sure you have a firm footing before going up more. And how to come down slowly and safely. Of course, his father panicked when I let him climb up and touch the ceiling. I had a hold of his body all the time of course.

He was grinning ear to ear. He also liked my snowball and the pizza and games and destroying the castles of Lincoln Logs I built. But he really got into the shredded paper pile I made him.

Tomorrow is going to be a fine one. I’ll be out at daybreak pulling the cover off the car and begin the bath. Then some detailing, maybe even a nice wax job. Armor All the tires and turn up the tunes.

Check the fluids, tire pressure and engine. HIT START, Reverse out of driveway. Shift, Smile, Sway, adjust volume, head bob to the tunes and become one with the car. Head west, seek some twisties.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The grass isn’t growing yet but I can hear it taunting me already.
  • Time to take a trip to York Automotive. Handling and ride height adjustments.
  • These big business leaders that backed Trump, like the auto barons are now seeing they backed the wrong horse. Good luck trying to educate bonehead about supply chain. And the nice thing is I’m not going to be buying a new car for some time so shove those price increases where the sun don’t shine.
  • I’ve come to realize that some of Maryland basketball fans are idiots. Booing Willard was a classless move yesterday. People who don’t think he can coach are idiots.
  • I’ve got me. Barely but we are hanging on.

Our Day in MD

It’s Maryland Day – And being a longtime resident I’m going to celebrate. I was sick all weekend when events took place but hey, I’m feeling half human again and I don’t mind joining in late. I read the meaning of it and have put it at the bottom of this post.

But first I wanted to take a minute on what it’s meant to me.

I like the climate. I like the state flag. I like the mountains. I like the beaches and the Bay. I even like THE Bridge. I like the beautiful highways, on a warm summer night around 3-4am (the only time they aren’t jammed).

Ocean City Maryland Beach and Parasail

I like the states university. I’ve liked our Governors, both Republican and Democrat ones. I like the states importance on its natural resources. It’s education system, did okay with my generation and my children’s. And I’m hoping for my grandchildren.

I like the small towns where people look you in the eye and say something like “Good morning” or “beautiful day” or at least node in acknowledgement. I have met many many more good people than bad.

I like the trails in the parks and along the rivers.

Maryland Blue Crabs – I LOVE THE SEAFOOD. Sorry, I didn’t mean to shout that one so early. The proud home of The Naval Academy in Annapolis. Pass the Old Bay please.

Of course we like deserts – Smith Island Cake, Berger Cookies, Fishers Carmel Corn, Fountain Soda from Dumsers (cherry), and The Snowball stand a mile from my house.

I’ve watched large parts of the state become well integrated melting pots. While not perfect James Rouse did something special with Columbia.

A short drive to the Nation’s Capital. A short drive to Baltimore. A short drive to the mountains and a short drive to the shore. And oh yeah. Like the license plate on this car says – DOOKSUX – Translation Duke Sucks

Meaning of Maryland Day lifted from the site linked above

Maryland Day, March 25th, commemorates the formal founding of the colony of Maryland, when the newly-arrived colonists erected a cross on St. Clement’s Island, offered prayers (perhaps by saying Mass), and took “possession of this Countrey for our Saviour and for our soveraigne Lord the King of England.” According to one of the three versions of Father Andrew White’s account of the voyage of the Ark and the Dove, this event took place on 25 March 1633/34 at the colonists’ first landfall in Maryland. In the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, this day is the Feast of the Annunciation, or “our blessed Ladies day” as Father White termed it, referring to the Virgin Mary. After consulting with the “Emperor of the Piscataway” and the “King of Yaocomoco,” Leonard Calvert, governor of the colony, negotiated the purchase of land on a nearby tributary of the Potomac River. This became the site of St. Mary’s City, the colony’s first settlement. Marylanders began observing Maryland Day in 1903, when the State Board of Education designated it as a day to be devoted to the study of Maryland history. In 1916, the General Assembly authorized the celebration of Maryland Day as a legal state holiday.

Congrats Lady Terps

Not bad. The University of Maryland Women’s Basketball team won in 2 OT’s to also make the Sweet 16 this year along with the men’s team. Truth be told the Women’s program has had a lot more success over recent years than the men’s, but this year they both are riding high.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Funny when you’re well, normal life seems so routine and boring at times. When you’re sick, normal life is this special place you yearn to return to with a passion.
  • All our lives are more at risk now than just mere weeks ago.
  • The cover comes off the car today.
  • Sorry Canada, I didn’t vote for the idiot. Ditto to EU, and the rest of the world apart from China, Russia and North Korea.

A bridge too far

The winter season which ended today was a good one. I managed to stay healthy the whole time. But waking this morning with sinuses draining, a fever, cough and body aches, I’ve picked up what my wife has been fighting the last 4 days.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Our March Madness party kicks off today and I’ve never missed it before. Well, a first time for everything because today I’m going to take it easy and stay home. I’d just succeed at getting everyone there sick if I went.

I’ll see if I can cross the health bridge tomorrow. Today I fouled out and I’m riding the bench. Photo by Mike Hartley

This really sucks because March Madness is probably our group’s favorite sporting event to gather and go wild. We go all out on food an spend the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament watching basketball from noon to midnight or beyond.

And if our team is successful, we will gather again on Saturday and Sunday for a few games. And each of the following 3 weekends we watch as much as we can all the way to the Final on Monday night.

I won’t know what to do with myself today. The house won’t have all that good grub. There won’t be anyone too high five or running around yelling OOHHHH after someone gets jammed on. I’ll be missing the laughter and jokes. The taunting and disagreements. The friends that come that we don’t see regularly. Lots of things I’ll miss out on today.

Well boys, have a great time and I’ll be with you in spirit today.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I won’t be signing up for any of these betting apps/services. I think they are bad for society.
  • The sun is out this morning, but the weather is telling me to get the cover on the car.
  • I refuse to watch anything on Fox anymore. And I’m going to boycott as many of their advertisers as possible.
  • Some might be successful at removing pieces of history on some government sites. But nobody is going to forget the history that is being left behind now.
  • If you know someone on Medicaid, you might be expecting them to be asking for a loan sometime in the near future.

Going to the well

I feel like I’m running on empty today. I’m not refreshing my internal tank enough. And I’ve increased my physical work with the outside coming into play again.

Okay, I brushed off the last yawn and I’m back in gear.

Mother Nature and I have entered the ring again for another knock down, dragged out, brutal war to maintain the yard and keep the woods at bay. Round one is a tie. I’ve managed to get the raking, weed and feed down and beat back about 10 feet of wood encroaching on more of the back yard. I’m trying to return it to the original tree line, so I have another 10 feet to go along the back.

I always feel good being able bodied enough to do battle. Though I’m getting a bit old for extended periods and the extreme heat of the summer takes its toll. I still remember looking out a window one summer at someone else cutting my yard while I was recovering from a cancer surgery. I still remember that thought that I’d never complain about yard work again if I was healthy enough to be outside doing it.

So that battle comments aren’t so much as a complaint. More out of respect for the opponent.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The leaf blower fired up for another season of work.
  • I think Comrade Trump should be banned from Arlington National Cemetery. He doesn’t care about living Veterans, you know he doesn’t give a damn about the deceased ones.
  • There is a special birthday coming up.
  • Fly Air Canada, just to piss of Trump.

This and That

With some storms on the way, I figured I better knock out a few posts in case we lose power later.

Thought I’d share a few shots from Annapolis from earlier in the week. I’m not sure where our travels will take us this week. Time is limited.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Happiness is found when looking for it. Unless it’s your default state of mind.
  • I’m highly uncomfortable in how other countries now perceive the United States.
  • A plan for the coming week is being formed. And it’s a good one.
  • Speak up before it’s too late.

Step up

I was up early but my productivity has been slack. Still trying to feel comfortable in my skin today. And I’m not going to feel comfortable outside. It’s cool and damp. And those nasty storms that are killing and hurting so many in the south seem to be headed this way tomorrow.

It’s time to step it up this evening and knock out a few things. I was doing well with my To-Do list, but it’s filled up again. Adding those outdoor activities takes some significant time out of the schedule.

I need to get back on the exercise routine. Some pain slowed my roll on, Friday and this morning. Yesterday hurt my monthly average and I’ll have to hustle to make it up.

Politics

I’m disappointed in the following members of the Senate who voted for the budget yesterday. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Brian Schatz of Hawaii, Gary Peters of Michigan, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire—as well as Angus King, a Maine independent who caucuses with Democrats.

It is my opinion they showed an incredible lack of a spine.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I read about a long list of people who are stopping posting on X. I’m proud to say I never even had that crap, when it was Twitter.
  • I guess the plan is to wipe out our life’s saving, and then bring prices down.
  • I enjoyed reading John Feinstein a sportswriter, author and former Post employee. He passed yesterday. A nice tribute to him by a former co-worker Eugene L. Meyer, found here.
  • Tough loss today for my Terps. But we go dancing next week.

Come to order please

Good day Maryland and beyond. I’ll do my best to keep things civil today and dispense fair rulings on many subjects.

I’d like to commend the road crews out patching the numerous crater like potholes dotting our fine state. I thank you, my tires, rims and shocks, thank you.

Next on today’s docket. I see Howard County stepping up to support Federal workers. While job opportunities around here seem to be plentiful, I’m not sure the sudden volume of unemployed workers from the Federal side can find enough work.

The weather gets an unfavorable rating this morning with cool and cloud conditions blocking my sunrise. This is followed by clouds all day and a high of 56. FAIL.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I was listening to the Beatle song “Come Together” and ran across the cover of that by the band Godsmack. What a rocking cover.
  • I don’t need artificial intelligence. I enjoy learning by experience.
  • Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain says Fox to its viewers.
  • There is a lot to learn about human nature. Because there are some sick individuals out here that keep pushing the envelope.

Thinking

This shot from my visit to Annapolis the other day made me think of my own son who will be having a daughter soon. Luckily, I have a daughter to share my heart with also. It’s hard to put those feelings into words that are adequate.

Sometimes a photo does help though, as these two below have arms tightly around each other, at the water’s edge, it’s that kind of trusting, secure embrace a father looks so forward to giving and getting.

Always good

There are so many good/great choices to eat in Annapolis that we could have stopped at a dozen places and been happy. We went to one of our favorites there called Carrol’s Creek Cafe for lunch.

It has a nice view of the harbor area and looking across at the Naval Academy. They hadn’t opened outdoor seating yet but I’m guessing it’s any day now.

The BBQ Shrimp wrapped in bacon and the Baked Oysters topped with horseradish, house made bacon and cabot vermont cheddar were really good. The Rockfish Tacos and Salmon Salads were excellent also. As usual, service was top notch.

Then it was over to Storm Brothers for some ice cream.

Annapolis is only 45 minutes from us (non-rush hour) so it’s an easy trip. Parking is getting a bit expensive, and I might have to look for alternatives instead of downtown.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Another sunny day ahead puts a smile on my face.
  • A note from my daughter this morning will make that smile last all day.
  • The only thing that was missing at the White House yesterday was one of those air-filled balloon characters that flop around as the President was trying to sell cars.
  • I may be repeating myself, but RFK Jr is an idiot. And a dangerous one.
  • Don’t be silent.

Zoom Zoom

Being a Miata owner, I like the phrase Zoom Zoom. I also like a zoom lens on a camera. Yes, there are drawbacks. Namely slower, and not as sharp throughout the whole range. But as I’ve gotten older the option of always getting closer is tougher than it used to be.

I’ve got a couple of zooms that I’m loving and learning to use. The cameras have different sensors so a comparison wouldn’t be fair, but I might post some from time to time. I had the opportunity to test out the range on this camera and found a good subject while shooting from the dock in Annapolis Maryland. Those two towers in the distance in the center have a smaller one at an angle just to the left of the two.

Annapolis MD looking east past the Naval Academy. Photo by Mike Hartley

That small leaning tower is a crane. And behind the crane is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Not bad for handheld. Thought I didn’t have it extended all the way.

I zoomed in a little more trying to get the guys working on the barge but couldn’t get anything sharp. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ve got to start at least taking my monopod out with me with this camera, if not the tripod. Because in addition to being slow they aren’t light either. I’ll give details on the equipment later and some same shoot comparisons this summer.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • When my better half is sick, nothing else matters.
  • Once my legs are in shape, I’ll move up and work on the core.
  • I wish I didn’t get frustrated when I start a new drawing, and it doesn’t work out.

Random Political Thoughts of the Morning

  • Worked very hard, all my life for that Social Security and Medicare I paid into, and it’s mine you meddling moron.
  • I wouldn’t rely on elected officials to wake up and stop this direction we’re headed in. Maybe it will be the people.
  • Elon calling Senator Mark Kelly and 25-year Navy Veteran, a traitor is hysterical. Then again if you take Elon’s Nazi/Communist and greed viewpoint, he might see himself as justified in saying that.

Easy Street

The first shot of the day as we walked out of the parking garage in downtown Annapolis, I caught a couple on Easy Street. What a way to start life. I wish them good health, good fortune and lots of love.

And to be technically correct I believe they are standing on Francis Street off Main. But I still like the Easy Street on the awning.

I just pulled the lens cap off as fast as I could and shot this first one because I could sense they were finishing up the shoot. Photo by Mike Hartley

Fortunately they had a professional working. I did capture a few other shots of the streets of Annapolis, which I’ll post later tonight because I have a few other tasks to catch up on first.

Couldn’t pass this up

It’s National Crabmeat Day. And in Maryland, that is something to Celebrate. Who picked this date, is my first question? Our season in the Chesapeake Bay runs April 1 to December 15th this year. What is with March date? Okay, I won’t obsess with that.

Instead, I think I’ll make a point to get some crabmeat this week and maybe for dinner this evening if I can talk my better half into at least a crab pretzel or cup of crab soup at the local establishment.

We LOVE our CRABS here in Maryland. I can’t wait to teach my grandson how to pick them. I don’t think my granddaughter was thrilled with that though. Maybe in a few years.

Each summer is a feast of these critters. Prepared in so many ways, all of them great. From picking them fresh out of the steamer to crab imperial, you can’t go wrong.

There is no way I’m going to be able not to have some kind of crab today now that I’ve spent the last few moments thinking about it.

My kind of shopping

Where would you go on a shopping spree? – An interesting ask from the daily writing prompt.

I’m not much of a shopper so this might not be the normal response to this question. I shop for essentials most all the time. And when we do shop it’s conservative. We live within our means.

But when you say the word “SPREE” that kind of inspires me to think of something beyond our normal needs.

So my answer would be the Endless Summer Cruisin Car Show in Ocean City MD. And I’d shop for a few new hot rods. Now that would present another issue. Where would I store them?

I drive a 2 seat convertible now. But my engine bay looks nothing like this. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m sure I could solve that issue if one of these were in my reach.

Inspiring

My son and I attended the final game of the regular season for the Maryland Terps men’s hoop team yesterday and relished the victory. It’s been a special season. One that was unexpectedly very successful. It appears Maryland will finish in 2nd or 3rd in the Conference when they were picked to finish 11th on average.

It’s also been a rarity of a season in many ways. I’ll start with the coach. After last season he was already on the hot seat, despite not having much talent. An entirely new starting lineup this year with the exception of one player. That one player is a senior. What? A senior still playing for the same team for 4 years. And not a bad player at that. He could have transferred when a coaching change was made in his time. He stayed. He is Maryland Pride.

Julian Reese and his teammates have come together as a unit in a unique way very quickly. The success the entire starting unit dubbed the “CRAB FIVE“, a takeoff of the old Michigan teams “Fab Five” has had together is special.

Anyone on that starting unit can score 20-30 points a game. All 5 starters average in double figures. The team averages 81.5 points a game. But the strongest part of the team is their defense. They are stifling. Defense has kept them in every game this season.

And while the bench hasn’t been the scoring machine they have provided some pressure defense and a few key plays this season to keep victories alive.

I so hope they do well in the Big 10 Tournament and the Big Dance NCAA Tourney. It would be nice to send the seniors off with a championship and keep this train rolling. Because when this team is playing well, they can play with anyone in the country. Go TERPS.

XFINITY center needs another Championship Banner. A great way to end the regular season and enter the playoffs. Photo by Mike Hartley

I hope to attend a lot more games next year.

Peaking

Just seemed like a good title for this photo. This is a great day for peaks.

National Harbor. Photo by Mike Hartley

I think I’ll try to post some more photos and less words. I need a better balance here.

Wow, after a few hours with the rake and pruners, my fingers aren’t the coordinated group they usually are. I did have gloves on so no blisters to deal with and I rarely get them from just a few hours even without gloves.

Felt good to be outside in the yard and getting it ready for the seasons of rolling around in it with the grandchildren. Pulling them around in the wagon and riding on my lap on the tractor.

Well back outside I go. It’s too big of a yard to rake in one day.

Hit it

Time to start banging out a Tuesday tune.

In my second year of retirement, I’ve switched back to breaking down the day into segments and filling them up like I did when working. Things like blocking out times for exercise each day. I make sure to touch each of my hobbies every day.

Filling my daily to-do list to the brim, just to challenge myself to see what I could get done. And now I need to get back to creating more posts each day.

I’ve always wanted to sit behind a set of drums. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m flexible on my start time each day. Somewhere between 2-5 am is normal. And I’ll go till 10pm or 1am at night. Yeah, I’m still not sleeping much most days.

Getting a good focus and being at peace with myself, while difficult some days it’s something I try to regain even as the day or situations get away from me.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Helping a friend isn’t something that needs thought, just action.
  • Now I know why their MAGA hats are Red. Have a good day, comrade.
  • I wish I could charge my batteries as easily as I do with my cameras.
  • Ah, it’s Tariff Tuesday. Is this what will bring prices down? Or was that the stock market you meant?
  • I switched from taking my meds with dinner to first thing in the morning. That way I don’t forget when I skip dinner.

Calling it a day

Feeling like I could have accomplished a bit more but content with what I did. Tomorrow gets a very early start and a massive effort to complete a few projects and move forward on others.

Northside Park in Ocean City MD. Photo by Mike Hartley

Woops, I just checked the weather forecast. We might have to adjust plans. I think I saw something about a sunny day and 60 degrees.

That fact might add a cruise in the Miata being added to the days activities. Just for sanity sake.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I got the best reward this evening. A short Facetime with both my children and grandchildren. Even though we don’t use it much, when we do, it’s my favorite app.
  • Tariff Tuesday. Destroying relationships with neighbors one brick at a time. Also I’m guessing that is going to help lower prices? Not.
  • Too many good people doing very important work are losing their jobs for no good reason making us all less safe.
  • Ignorance has led us to an ugly place in time. And it could get much worse.
  • So off to make it a better place, after a few hours rest.

Wax on

Sometimes I sit and laugh a bit at various times of the week reminding me of my old schedule. For instance, now at 6:30am on a Monday morning, I would normally be finishing up my first night of the workweek of 12 hours and either driving 50 miles home or marching upstairs to bed if I was lucky enough to be working from home that night.

Today is full of possibilities. I’m going to try to make them good ones, but I’m sure there will be opposing forces. Well, let’s get it on, no sense wasting time. A few appointments and errands are on the morning list but the day is relatively free.

I had better take advantage of it because the end of the week is very busy.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • If you’re comfortable with yourself, and believe in yourself, you can make it.
  • I’m not convinced that the biggest load is given to those who can handle it.
  • Find your own way because if you take others paths you rarely will be happy.

Out of the shadows

I love watching deer around our homes. I think this guy was asking me about this recent cold snap and when its leaving. Watching them wake, stretch and emerge from the shadows is always fun.

Politics

Unsurprisingly to me, the rest of the world seems to be alarmed over our recent alliance with Russia. As displayed recently with the horrible meeting between the leader of Ukraine and Putin’s Puppet. Well, there are a ton of people in the United States that are against this also. And I am one of them.

For some reason people and officials in power who have condemned the Communist Government of Russia for decades are all of sudden kissing their ass. Well far as I’m concerned you have traded sides and can no longer be trusted to have the best interest of this country at heart.

You have completely sold out not to condemn this crap. Lindsey Graham, you can go to Leningrad and talk that crap if you want brag about being proud of Trump’s display, but don’t peddle that crap with me. There was a famous line in the 90s from the show In Living Color. And that line was “Homey don’t play that.” And I hope most Americans all don’t either.

Maybe Trump’s nickname for Marco Rubio “little Marco” was right. Because he never looked smaller than he did sitting there and watching that display. I never thought we would populate the Government with a bunch of Communists loving idiots. Anyone who thinks Russia has our best interest at heart is a FOOL.

If Obama or Biden started conceding to Russia the Republicans would have wanted them removed from office and shot for treason.

I’ve been looking at some items from World War 1, World War 2 and Korea from my father and grandfather. I can’t make them proud by remaining silent.

And I’ve had it hearing about tax breaks for the rich and telling us we must live with less.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It doesn’t feel like a Sunday.
  • Trying to focus on what I have instead of what I don’t.
  • I don’t even want to see what Comrade Trump is up to this day.
  • Here’s a thought. Do you think someone might want to cancel midterm elections?

Waves of thought

There are times I’m consumed by thoughts. And problems either I haven’t stumbled upon the solution for yet, or there is none. And that usually leads to a lot of wheels turning from the neck up. And that affects what I get done which is counterproductive.

The only thing to do is keep trying different things, move on, and survive. So, time to put feet on the treadmill and then get ready for a busy day.

I’ve also been contemplating. Photo by Mike Hartley

The long-range forecast doesn’t inspire me. Regardless I’m looking forward to getting outside more. There is a local trail that rolls along the Patapsco River that is several miles that I’ll explore this month.

I’m off to a much stronger start this year and at the same time feeling like I should accomplish a lot more each day. The feeling of guilt for relaxing and maybe not utilizing a day fully, is creeping back into my world. I wish I could lose that anxious feeling.

Part of it is physical. With age it’s hard to tell what is normal and what isn’t. I feel better aerobically and strength wise than I have in years. I’m maintaining a healthy weight and eating better. But pain is a daily companion. Plus, my balance isn’t what it was, and without glasses I’m sight challenged.

And I feel so lucky to wake each morning, able to get up and move about, have a roof over my head, food to eat, and thankful to watch the sunrise.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • There is a grandson waiting to hug me today.
  • This movement last Friday (economic boycott) has inspired me. I see there is an Amazon boycott coming March 7-14. Well I’ve decided to switch as many of my purchases away from Amazon as I can on a permanent basis and I started that this morning. Don’t worry, it’s not going to Walmart either, I’ve never purchased anything from them in my lifetime. I’ve always been opposed to big box stores because I feel they kill local businesses.
  • I heard a hockey player refer to his young son as a human Zamboni. That would be me ice skating. I could roller skate but that was back in the day when there were 2 wheels side by side instead of inline.
  • The people will probably wake up far before those who govern do. Or at least one can hope.

This and That

Down to the last few days of February and that feels both good and bad. Another month has flown by which always bothers me. On the good side the cold is starting to abate and the 3 seasons I love are around the corner.

The moon stands over our lights. Photo by Mike Hartley

Also, right around the corner is BaseBall. Little league fields to Major League ballparks. I need to practice shooting some sports/action shots, so maybe I’ll start with a few trips to Wallace Park.

Sunrise Inspired

Another beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean this morning. The water looked so calm. I can’t wait to be down there in person for that feeling. Most day trips to the ocean, I leave about an hour before sunrise so I can see it come up as I cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

I think I’m going to pick a warm night and leave around 2:30am and get to the ocean before sunrise. Take some photos as I like to do at that time of day and then take a nap on the beach in the warm morning sun.

Wake and wander over to Happy Jacks Pancake house and get some calories. Cruise from Ocean City up to Bethany Beach for some DB Fries and more sunning before heading back to Ocean City for a light lunch at Saltwater 75 for a crispy shrimp po boy.

Back to the beach for a few hours and watch people on the boardwalk. I’ll catch a shower and change someplace and head to Fagers Island for sunset on the deck there while a light dinner is had. Listen to the band for a while and then head west towards home again.

Politics

With the US voting with Russia again the latest UN Resolution condemning Russia for invading Ukraine. It gives a whole new meaning to the Red States in America, doesn’t it?

I have friends and family on Medicaid. And they are the people who can least afford cuts to their healthcare. Giving tax cuts to the rich and cutting benefits to the poor, seems ass backwards to me.

Cuts to medical research and people who protect our food supply seem short sighted to me.

Control the media, control the message.

So many thresholds, guardrails and boundaries are gone that we have crossed over into uncharted waters.

February New Market

We decided to take a ride to New Market Maryland and have an excellent lunch at The Derby. Then a walk of the town and friendly exchanges with one or two residents. I’ve got to get back here this spring and do some more shooting because this is a colorful little old town. From 1793 I read. Most of the buildings are historic as you will see.

I missed the ambulance pulling out by a minute.

I always find it good to get off the main streets and into alleys for hidden gems.

There seems to be a community effort to keep the color and contrast between homes and business in some beautiful shades. I believe I read the population is about 1,600.

I like the saying on that plaque in the middle photo. It reads “Don’t follow where the path may lead…. go where there is no path and leave a trail.”

It didn’t appear the General Store was a general store any longer.

Here’s looking at you kid…… rock

People have put some real special work into some of these homes.

The Village Potter has inspired me to make my own sign.

Restless

Waking at 2:30 am and realizing going back to sleep wasn’t going to be in the cards, I found myself at the computer wondering what marvels the day will bring. Ah it’s a Sunday morning. One of my favorite days now is that it’s no longer the start of my work week as in the past.

Some mornings I’m still a bit giddy at being retired. This seems to be one of them. My exercise is off to a good start today. I also cooked some bacon and made a fruit smoothie.

I’m excited to get outside and work in the yard this afternoon. It might just be an outdoor week ahead with warmer weather starting to return.

I’ve been restless to get outside again. I love my house but spending the days inside and when going out involves lots of discomfort one gets a little stir crazy. So, balance will return this week and that is good for the spirit and health.

When my doctors are concerned, upset, anxious and generally outraged at RFK Jr as United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, it concerns the hell out of me also.

It will be very interesting to watch his response to the measles outbreak. I hope we are not talking down the line about the number of deaths that could be avoided.

Another added danger to our daily lives, we didn’t need.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • The last week of February makes me smile. We are entering the home stretch of getting out of my least favorite season.
  • I’m not rich in dollars or toys. I was blessed with a girl and a boy.
  • If we have enough sunny people, we might have a sunny future.
  • It’s a shame that more bands don’t use a saxophone player. I was listening to Marc Russo with the Doobie Brothers, and it sounds like it was meant for their music.

Ride along?

I’m not so sure I like the ride I find myself on during parts of the day. I’m certainly concerned about who is at the controls at times.

Ocean City Maryland. Photo by Mike Hartley

I like rides where I’m at the wheel. I know the maintenance is right on my ride.

I know inspections have been done on my ride. I know where my ride is headed when I’m in control.

The ride I’m on when not at the wheel of my car or at the computer is feeling a bit tenuous.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m as good as the effort I put in today. The words I communicated and wrote. The handshakes and hugs I gave. The smiles and laughs I shared. The photos I took and prints I made for others. The enjoyment I allowed myself. The exercise I put into it. The remembrances of those special. Reaching out to loved ones.
  • Aerosmith is one of those hard rock bands that makes me smile and hips move at the same time.
  • Got my blood pressure under control again. They throw em, I hit’em.
  • The last couple times it’s been time for a haircut I’ve thought about letting it grow again. But I already do enough things to make my better half shake here head, so I haven’t skipped one yet.
  •  Vive la Résistance – lots of us have chainsaws Elon.

Getting a grip

I made the mistake of turning on the TV this morning. Got me wound up so I took it out on the treadmill for a bit and I’m relaxed again. I do see a few things I’d get enjoyment from today that I will spend a few minutes watching.

Like the first Spring Training game for my New York Yankees this afternoon, so I’ll peek at that for a bit. There are also a few good college basketball games on this evening. But the effort will be with the hobbies today.

I did go take the cover off the go cart. There are rumors of 50-degree temps returning. Kind of hard to relate to the last few weeks. I’ll believe it when I feel them.

My hands actually feel good again today, so I think I’ll pick up some drawing implements. And why not turn on some music. Any suggestions maestro? Ah, a fine suggestion below.

What a game

Attending Maryland basketball games has always been a load of fun for me. And tonight was no different. A victory over USC 88-71 and a tie for 4th place in the conference. CBS and Sports Illustrated had them predicted to finish 11th in the conference.

I went through several other newspaper publications around conference schools and found that 11th ranking about the norm, there were a few 10s and 12s. The nice thing is there are games left and we could win the conference title. That would be a nice way to announce ” We’re BACK”

The college game has an excitement about it that few other sport events do. Maybe Olympics but that’s national instead of local. While it feels like the same spirit, there isn’t the local connection with the athletes that the university and its alumni and regular fans develop with those institutions.

The shot below was from before a game a few years ago. Tonight, the place was rocking, but I’d still like to see a few more of those season ticket holders in the good seat show up. Or maybe donate your seats if you can’t use them.

Random Thoughts of the wee hours of the Morning

  • I wonder if anyone has coined the phrase “Parking Garage Racing Stripes”, because I would always cringe when I saw that white or yellow paint from a cement pillar dug into the paint job of a vehicle that got, too close on a corner.
  • Could people be realize someone isn’t doing things that could help. And could possibly hurt many people.
  • I see 6-7 thousand IRS employees are losing their jobs. If people can’t get their tax returns, someone else might lose their job.
  • Funny thing, it seemed there was a lot of support for years for Ukraine on both sides of our elected officials. Not so funny how that turned on a dime, when Putin came calling on Trump. Maybe he is teaching his Republican party to say Hello Comrade in Russian.

At least we’re afloat

Sometimes I feel like my ship is taking on water. Life seems like a constant series of bailing out. Between personal challenges, family challenges, financial challenges, professional challenges and then the society challenges that are mounting daily.

Our government has checked out creating new challenges. The climate extremes are presenting new challenges for both food and species. The pace of changes causes me to Google strange things. Like where I live is 318 ft above sea level. So, I ask if the ice caps melted how much would the sea level rise? The answer the USGS gave was it would be an increase of 230 feet.

Hey, that makes my trip to the ocean a lot shorter.

Just a little work and we will be off again. Photo by Mike Hartley

But enough worrying. Time to get on with life and solve some of those issues. Time will be limited to fixing world issues, so I’ll concentrate on those closer to home.

I have to be responsible and pay a few bills. And schedule a second estimate for upgrading my attic insulation. We must pick up some supplies for a gathering this weekend. I hope to enjoy watching the Maryland basketball game later and maybe do some drawing.

There are photos from yesterday to download, the office could use some cleanup and I could spend an hour outside picking up downed branches. But first, a little exercise.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • I’m listening to more comedy and laughing more. I knew there were solutions out there.
  • Chocolate – not just for dessert.
  • Age is wonderful. I’m all the time wondering, is that new pain something to be concerned about, or just aging?
  • I’m starting to get encouraged. Could we be finding our voice? Vive la Résistance

Cruising into Mid-Week

Tuesday was both a productive and relaxing one. Feeling more at peace with myself today. That little fact, is key in me getting some good work done. It was also good for some rest after a good workout.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in 2019. Photo by Mike Hartley

I should be able to get out in this frosty weather and get a few shots in the local area. I’m going looking for some natural beauty in the winter season. I might be hard, it’s a little brown out here and the sun won’t be out today. I’ll have to work hard for some contrast and color.

Then again, maybe a good day to photograph people because I need some symbols of COLD and today it’s starting out at 15 degrees at this hour. Add on some stiff winds and I should see some people bundled up.

Food

I mentioned we went to Oscar’s Alehouse the other day and I forgot I took a few shots of my meal. The Steak and Cheese Egg Rolls with Queso sauce is one of my favorites and I get that almost every time there.

I will go for the Fried Pickles or Spicy Tex Mex Eggrolls also quite often. The Tsunami Shrimp have also been good.

Damn, now I’m tempted to go back and get some tomorrow.

I like their Cream of Crab soup, which is a little thicker than some but I’ve always found a great bit of crab in it. I’ve had the French Onion soup at the Eldersburg location but not here yet.

The Monte Cristo w/raspberry jelly to dip them in.

Photos by Mike Hartley

I’ve sampled several of the Craft sandwiches, and also the Burgers and Pizza and always been satisfied. The service has always been great, and the food always out promptly. There aren’t as many booths as the Eldersburg location, but that’s not too much of an issue.

I’m going to put them to a few more test. I’d like to see how their ribs measure up and some of the other Entrees. I hope their all great because this spot is very close to us and the kids and grandkids like it.

The bar is bright, large, and seems to also do a good business.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Watching the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean from the beach at Ocean City is something I love. Even if I have to watch a webcam of it.
  • There is what I hope to get done, and then there is the end of the day.
  • People like to laugh. People want to laugh. I’m here to help. At least my kids seem to get a kick out of me.
  • Took a very important step today that will bear fruit this year.
  • I see Putin has reattached the strings to his puppet again.
  • Irony – those who said we weren’t safe are working hard to make us even less so.
  • Mirrors are good reality checks.
  • I liked the days at the bank where you could stand in line for the teller you liked.

A bridge too far, nope

One thing that was kind of nice on a motorcycle, was crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on a warm summer day heading to the ocean. The Atlantic, is just short of a 3 hour ride from home, but an hour into the trip I hit the bridge.

The official name is The William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge. In truth, it’s two bridges. 2 lanes going eastbound and 3 lanes on the westbound span. They do us that 3rd lane to go east when summer traffic is heaviest.

A touch over 4 miles long and a max clearance for ships of 186′ in height. And it has some great views. It’s just beautiful in good weather and frightening in bad weather. We were at the top when a hail storm started in a light car one time. It felt like we were going to be blown off the bridge.

I’ve experienced some strong cross winds on the bike that had me leaning on the tank for a lower profile also. But most of the time it’s at sunrise on my way to the beach. And in the convertible it’s a real treat.

One of these days I’ll have to have my better half take the wheel so I can shoot with abandon. It will be one of my favorite targets this summer, with a good friend on Kent Island now I’ll be riding it much more than the past.

I’m not crazy about heights but and this one is high, but for some reason going over it has become fairly easy. So here is to a few dozen safe trips over and back this year.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Fitness used to just be part of my daily life when I was young. Being I’m pretending to be young in my advance years I thought I’d incorporate fitness again.
  • I had to retire my favorite pair of glasses. But I can see clearly now.
  • Too many cooks in the blog can make a mess of a post. It’s already crowded in here with me, myself and I.
  • Another snow event on the horizon. And here I am, flip flops in hand waiting for summer.

Give it a shot

Another holiday Monday I was able to enjoy. Way to go retirement. Not working holidays is something I might say till I pass this world because I know what working holidays all the time feels like.

Time with my daughter and granddaughter with a great lunch together at Oscar’s in Woodstock. Then back home to play the afternoon away. What a great way to spend a Monday.

Fire out. Photo by Mike Hartley

Looks like that mid-weed snow fizzled out completely, which is fine with me. I’d like nothing more than to put the snow shovels away for the season.

I can’t believe it’s almost 9pm, and I’m just getting my first post of the day in and the first mile on the treadmill. That’s okay though because hearing my granddaughter laugh is medicine that my ears needed today.

The warm hung and words from my daughter that she is good. My kids are an immense sort of pride that always puts a smile on my face.

Aside from me being a little undisciplined, it’s been a fine day.

I started the lumber collection, (downed branches) that are now littering the yard. I’ll wander over to my neighbors tomorrow and see if they need help with a tree that came down across their driveway.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I love being able to put a smile on someone’s face when I give them prints I’ve made.
  • I thought I smelled bacon. I didn’t, so I took a pack out of the freezer to cook tomorrow morning.
  • I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone overweight driving a Miata.
  • I brought enough structure and got better results in first few weeks of this year, that adding more seems like common sense.

Blowing Sunday

Up early doing a little prep for some possible power outages today. We have high wind warnings from noon till almost midnight. The ground is wet and more rain on the way and wind gusts of 60 mph give us a fairly good shot at losing power.

BG&E on the job. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’d be shocked it we didn’t have at least a short outage. I haven’t even finished picking up all the downed branches from last week’s winds. If we do lose it, I hope it’s able to be restored before the mid-week snow is expected. The number of multiple day outages has decreased in recent years, but we have experienced several of them over the decades here.

I just finished scheduling a post for Monday and I’ll get one ready for Tuesday just in case. I hope I can finish a few posts today also if we are one of the lucky areas that can come through unscathed.

To the power line techs out in this weather, thank you and please be safe. As well to the other emergency personnel who are always out and about every day.

Medical

I used to look at the United States as a leader in the world in medicine. Well that just came to an abrupt halt with RFK Jr. being installed as HHS Secretary. If you’re not terrified at that thought now. Give it time, you will experience it.

I always relied upon my own doctors because they kind of went along with the standard recommendations of our country. My trust in this administration’s ability to give me factual information is about zilch.

Do I feel safer with him in charge? NO. I just can’t see this ending well for many people. We might be about to witness how deadly ignorance can be.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Just apply yourself and see what happens.
  • Take a sip of life, if it burns, find a chaser.
  • I was noted throughout my professional career as being outspoken from time to time. I might have to bring that part out of retirement.
  • Despite the threat of bad weather, I feel a productive day ahead. On the other hand if I lose power I could miss the Maryland game and the SNL 50 year show which would really give a bad start to the week.

Sunny Friday ahead

Decided to get some work done late this evening and some reflection. Thursday was a good one in terms of accomplishing goals. I would have liked to gotten another midday post done but was busy with traditional arts.

I’m looking forward to a good sunrise later this morning.

I’m not the only one admiring sunrises. Photo by Mike Hartley

I did fit in unexpected some reading time on a book called “How to Know a Person” which I’m enjoying. Also did a few illustrations for later use on some of my work history posts.

Today is Valentines Day. We stopped spending money on this other long ago, except for the kids/grandkids. I guess we did things the first few years we were married but quickly realized we could do something the following week at half the price with half the crowd.

I have no knock on Valentines Day. Any day that helps spread and share love is a great day. So why not have a day a year dedicated to love. But maybe instead of buying those chocolates, and flowers and dinners and jewelry, we as couples share it with those who can’t afford the basics? Just a thought.

Random Thoughts of the Evening

  • Decisions, you got to make them. The middle can band together or get swallowed by the edges.
  • Strong wind has a scary sound to it.
  • I see the desire to eliminate some departments in government by the current administration. I think they should tout the formation of their new one. The DOI (The Department of Injustice)
  • Few things are as calming as petting a pet. Then enjoy it also.
  • Having more flashbacks to the days of my youth lately. Sometimes a song, sometimes an article, sometimes the mention of an old name. Maybe the passing of an old favorite hotrod on the street. Sometimes it’s passing by an old landmark.

Choices

As I sit here contemplating the choices in front of me today, I’m very torn. Basically, the whole day is mine to do as I please except for making a few appointments. There are many chores that I could attended to here and at the same time I’d like to just get out and go for a ride and take some photos. But it would be hard for the weather to suck any worse than it is now.

I do want to watch the Maryland basketball game later and it’s always fun with the boys, being we’ve been rabid Terps fans for decades. I’m just not sure I’m in the right frame of mind. We will see how the day goes.

Right this minute, I feel like I’m paddling upstream. But I’m not going to reach today’s goals with this type of propulsion. So first I’ve got to expel some negative energy on the treadmill. The beard needs a trim and then a shower.

Wonder if this boat still runs. Photo by Mike Hartley

And then we will be ready to get production underway up in this beotch. No time to worry about what various body parts don’t feel good this morning. No time to waste hoping for what might have been yesterday or the day before. Purging negative thoughts and turning the volume up.

The first thing is to order some more paper and ink. I’m going to punish that Canon Pro-100 printer this month. Next, I think I’ll work on that pastel piece and think about where I want to treat myself for lunch. The weight is back to normal, and I can return to some normal meals.

I got to return to some blogging regularity. I’ve been slacking in that area lately. Even though I did spend a few hours yesterday, cleaning up my drafts folder which had grown to over 360 items. Yuck, some good ideas I need to work on with some trash also.

Well, I just received the sweetest picture of my granddaughter before she set on her 100th day of school. She started kindergarten this year. That sure turned my morning around. Onto bigger and better things. I’ll return later hopefully with some new images.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • You won’t find me complaining about the heat this summer after this freezing winter.
  • I like the song “I Can’t Explain” by The Who. I love their songs.
  • I’m pissed off at the weather forecast for Mon-Fri next week. Highs in the low 30s and then falls to the 20s for highs, and then teens at night. I’m through with this nonsense.
  • I’m starting to use the photos on my office walls to make me feel better when I’m down. They do bring a smile to my face.

I can wish

A brisk 31 degrees with some light freezing rain falling this morning. I feel like I’ve been hibernating for a very long period. All I can think of is a warm summer breeze, eating a crabcake sandwich with a nice frozen beverage on the deck, and then walking out to the gazebo over the water at Fagers Island, and watch the sunset.

We will venture towards the shore a few times this year and certainly dine here a time or two.

I like the music, and the food in either the casual or fine dining is great. The atmosphere is very relaxing and fun for me.

Always a great crowd of people here. Photo by Mike Hartley

But I’ll have to wait a little longer till Old Man Winter decides to sound the retreat so I can hear the 1812 Overture they play as the sun sets each night.

How many restaurant parking lots give you this view. Photo by Mike Hartley

Sometimes on day trips by myself this is the last stop and after the sunset I’ll point the car back west and head home. But it’s best when I return to the condo and hear the laughter of my children and grandchildren and continue to enjoy that warm salt air breeze.

Now where did I leave my big coat, it’s cold out there.

Oh this shot made me pause. The thought of throwing my leg over the saddle and cranking a V Twin makes me drift back. No time to waste reflecting on the past when I can ride into the future. But my ride is different. Oh, I can still ride a bike without issue, but I know I don’t have the reflexes or balance I used to have.

And while those might not be needed 95% of the time, the 5% they are, they wouldn’t be there. And that is bad news on 2 wheels. I believe Mr. Eastwood said it best in one of his movies – “A man’s gotta know his limitations.”

Leaning over a balcony is always fun. Photo by Mike Hartley

Things are jumping at the homestead this morning for me. A good workout started and finishing some editing. I probably added over 100 photos to various galleries yesterday and I hope to double that today.

I was just about to grab the flashlight and head outside to see how thick the ice is. Looks like the surrounding school systems are all going in 2 hours late today but our county closed schools last night. I think someone responsible for the decision just didn’t want to get up early or go to work today.

Random Thoughts of the Morning

  • Time for a photo print paper order.
  • I’m adapting and overcoming better lately. I need to make it a trend.
  • I would give some people a warning but those people wouldn’t be listening or care if they did hear it. And it’s very important to know who those people are.
  • I’m not a fan of rain but the sound of it falling on a dark morning well before sunrise is nice.

Let’s SLIDE

Given the severity of the cold so far this year I feel I have been very controlled in my response. I just happened to look at the forecast for just this evening. Here are the various descriptions of the weather on the by hour chart between 7pm and 9am tomorrow morning.

  • 7pm Cloudy – 8pm Rain/Snow Showers – Light Freezing Rain – Freezing Rain – Wintery Mix – Freezing Rain – 9am Light rain I’d say the morning commute sounds in jeopardy.
Man and nature become one. Photo by Mike Hartley

And then I look further and I see snow predicted for 3 of the next 7 days.

I don’t know who keeps the book on whom is eligible for a snowblower but I’ve put in over 6 decades of shovel work and I’m wondering where I am on the list.

I guess I shouldn’t complain, I have enough money for a shovel and a walk and driveway to do it. Always a bright side my mother would remind me. Plus it’s good aerobic exercise if you take it easy.

I’ve got the cover on the car again and just have to go put the wind strap on it. My better half had an appointment so I’m blowing the dust off the speakers while working on my health, this blog, some illustrations and photo editing.

And in the spirit of keeping my daily streak alive, I better schedule a post for tomorrow in case our power is lost this evening.

Mid week madness

It’s a damn good day here, despite the cloudy day. Feeling thoughtful and motivated. That quick ride in the fun cart yesterday made me feel alive again even though it was only about a 20 minute loop. Some idiot tried to ruin the trip by tailgating me something fierce. Few things on the highway bother me as much.

Had a great lunch at The Canopy with my better half, and about to resume some exercise I started this morning. I think I’m going to leave the TV off this afternoon and concentrate on my hobbies. So off I go to catch up on some photo editing.

The less the cranes in the background move, the less the boats in the foreground move.

Stormy times ahead. We all may be carrying a heavy load soon.

These were shot in the summer of 2021. Found them in my last chance pile. Decided to try to salvage a few. Maybe I should have let them sink?

I never know what is good and what isn’t. Yeah I know the technical details. Even some composition and content concepts. But when an image is lacking a few but still catches my eye for some reason I can’t help wonder is this just trash or something to share.

So I padell out into the storm and hope for the best.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m plotting on how to discontinue FaceBook as one of my social media accounts. It might take a little bit, but its a goal.
  • When you put a criminal in charge of the government, why would you be surprised when he fires or does buyouts for FBI, DOJ, and CIA personnel. Who needs law enforcement getting in the way of a good thing.
  • I believe our local county is going to enact a phone ban in schools. While listening to the story, I believe I heard kids spend over 2 hours a day on those devices in school, and 6 hours on it a day on average. Holy crap. I get mad at myself if I spend an hour a day. No wonder we aren’t learning anything. I think its a good thing all schools should adapt.
  • The body is talking back to me for the first time in a bit. I guess I should maintain this level before pushing on too soon.
