I’m on time for a change of pace for the Thursday Doors Challenge
Join in on the fun of Thursday Doors. The link to Dan’s Site – No Facilities to see many more talented displays of grand entrances. Have a great week all. And as always thank you Dan.
Just a few shots from my Annapolis archive.

I hope to visit the town of Annapolis again next month.

It’s hard not to have a good meal in this town. I think I’ll try The Boatyard Bar and Grill on our next visit.
The grin on Snoopy’s face in the driver’s seat reminds me of the one I have when behind the wheel. But today isn’t one of those days with drizzle and showers. With more of the same expected tomorrow, I won’t be getting my go-cart out till Thursday.

I’ve got some time to get some fresh images today and that has me excited. And the deck gives me enough cover so that I can put the workbench outside and let nature collect the sawdust. So, I have plenty to keep me busy despite the sketchy weather.
Despite feeling a bit down I’m filled with optimism and things to do. And I should get up from here and get to a few of them.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Trust is a difficult thing, because it’s a difficult thing for so many people. And that is a shame.
When you’re older the RIGHT amount of exercise is very important. Because that window of right is much narrower.
Make each encounter with your grandchild special. When I have seen that in people’s lives it has made a big positive impact most times.
Some days I feel like dancing. Yep, today is one of them. Probably has something to do with my better half being out and the music a bit louder than usual.
So many thoughts racing through my head today. Things are being accomplished but I’m lacking focus. I know I’m out of balance.
I also know there are a ton of responsibilities ahead of me this week and next. So, the remaining days of August will be a blur.
But also, some opportunities. We will be staying closer to home and that should allow me to make some progress on gathering images for the book for my son and doing some woodworking.
I just have to keep a positive mindset and power forward. Then spend some time in September winding down.

Find someone to make proud today. Even if they are just a memory.
The feet feel like dancing.
You can still get soaked standing in a misting rain. I may need to change.
I’d like to get that spark back, that I had once.
I’ve never seen a one size fits all, actually fit all.
The daily writing prompt is asking to – Create an emergency preparedness plan.
I’d rather spend more time living than prepping but given the climate in this county and around the world it might not be a bad idea spending some more time thinking and acting on it.
We take a lot of important things for granted unfortunately. Basics like our food and water supply. Our energy supply and safety.
To create a plan, you have to figure out what the conditions of the emergency will be. That is the difficult part, and you can spend a lifetime being a prepper and not live your life. So where is that balance, that sweet spot of being ready but living in the moment.
I know I’m not doing nuclear prep. If that happens, we’re all gone and what is left won’t be worth living in.
So, my plan today is to have a good lunch and that way if something happens at least I’ll have a full stomach for a bit.
What is a word you feel that too many people use? – I’ll answer this question from the daily writing prompt a bit differently this year.
My word for this post is LATE. As usual life got in the way this morning and afternoon. Even though I got a lot done none of it was here working. That will change for the remainder of the day.
My word for the day is OVERCAST. I miss the sun.
My cars word for the day is FIXED. Good old Eakles Garage got my AC running again and even though I rarely use it, coming home with that very cloudy sky and humidity at 100% or more if possible, the AC felt good.
My photography word of the day is NIGHT. That is when I’ll be doing a little shooting today.
The scale in the bathroom says the word of the day is DIET. I admit, I’ve gotten sloppy and put a few pounds on so let me get up from this computer and hit the treadmill for a while.
My word for color of the day is Powder Blue. I believe the Ferrari color is called Gulf Blue.
I bet insurance for these things cost more than my car. Photo by Mike Hartley
I noticed yesterday that I had a 365-day streak going on. A year. I went back last year and looked to see what broke my last streak. Ah, the good old 30-hour power outage took it away. I believe the streak at that time was 246 days.
Those are just numbers, but in some ways important. When I started blogging over a decade ago my goal was to post each day. I’m no more prepared now than I was last year to keep streaks alive. I don’t have posts scheduled in advance much. 99% of what I do is spur of the moment. I don’t have a backup power system besides a small generator.
I remember being bummed out about breaking a daily goal. But I’m more relaxed now and if it happens, it happens. It’s life. But I still have my personal goal.
Keeping a white car clean is a constant challenge. I had one once. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’m feeling good from the yardwork exercise, and I’m headed back out for another hour or two in the sun. Then a shower and into the convertible to test the coordination between my left knee/foot and right arm/hand going through the gears. Respectfully of course.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I sense a wild week ahead. Then again, I could just be inspired.
Being retired doesn’t mean you don’t still have a ton of responsibilities.
Grandkids grow up too fast just like their parents did.
Sometimes the keyboard feels like a musical one. I wish my words had the feeling and beat of a good song.
I finished cleaning my ride last night, for the car show at Mikey and Mel’s, later today. I hope to get some good shots to fill some future images to break up all the grey I create rambling on. No, I don’t have the Ferrari below, but I do have a sleek red Miata that I love just as much as this person does their car.
I’m always on the lookout for my favorite color, shade and style for my future paint job. Looking at the upgrades people make and how that changes the look or stance. Or just admiring a classic that is restored to original condition.
With the weather being as close to perfect as you can ask for, there will be a huge crowd. I’ll get there early and hopefully catch a few shots of people coming in around those circles. I usually don’t park on the show side. Maybe next year I start modifying my own.
Anyway, I’m there to enjoy, admire, photograph and run into a few people I may have grown up with. I have one old neighborhood friend who has a pair of Vipers who I met there for the first time in decades earlier this year.
Car shows are still a slice of America where all come to, share, admire, respect and have fun. Maybe I’ll spend one show in the future just shooting all the various people.
Have a great day. I’ll be in and out between the show and chores and trip to the hardware.
That sun is out, and I’ll ignore the few clouds about and make great use of the day. August is quickly getting away from me. I’m going for a front row seat myself and will enjoy this Friday. Even the physical labor part. Keeps me healthy.
Take a front row seat once in a while. Photo by Mike Hartley
Actually, I will get some seat time. I was out in the Miata last night and boy did I miss that car. Having a manual transmission again put a smile on my face. Out I’ll go again for some back roads with the top down and tunes on. Waves of the hand to bike riders and runners and of course, other Miata drivers.
Random Thoughts of the Day
The good part about weeding is you have to bend over further than touching your toes. Now no knee bending now.
I have a need for a snowball shortly after the stand will be opening today. Just put the gift cards from the kids in my wallet.
I Can’t BELIEVE I’m seeing some leaves falling from the trees out back already.
Your beach can be anywhere you want. Just keep those images alive in your head.
Another question from the daily prompt I’m going to answer differently. They ask to – Describe your life in an alternative universe.
I’ve always thought what if I pursued my own interest from the start of my career. What would I have accomplished as a photographer and artist? Would I have gone into business myself and worked for myself instead of others?
Sometimes now I say what if I had taken care of my body better. I’m sure some things wouldn’t ache as they do, but I’ll never know if the cancers were part of my genetics or all the nasty stuff I’ve encountered in life.
I think if I had taken that position or other job, if I had or hadn’t made a lot of decisions. Of course, those are in the past but some worth learning from.
We are always living in an alternative universe by the decisions we make and don’t make. They are always altering the course of this life.
Maryland has some great roads. Photo by Mike Hartley.
Interesting how priorities change with your health is challenged. Getting better quickly rises the ladder to the top rung in no time. Feeling better again today but a bit away from 100%.
I’ve got a few chores under my belt but far from what I normally accomplish. Pacing myself to health again. The pace I have chosen though doesn’t seem to be the one that my better half agrees with. I got “the look” when I was out trimming the yard.
I found a few images from my iPhone from one of my sunrise walks on the beach last week. The last few days have been very cloudy here in central Maryland. So, I need my sun and I figure why horde it.

A week of family vacation, being sick for a few days after, I got away from looking at my favorite blogs. Don’t worry, I’m returning today.
As I’m getting older, I’m appreciating rest more.
RFK Jr is affecting your health and your loved ones in a NEGATIVE WAY. So, wake up and pay attention before he kills you or your loved ones.
Time to get more active in some causes and help the direction change.
I’m hoping what I had yesterday was a case of food poisoning. All I know is I was very sick for a day and felt very weak today. Hopefully on the mend so I can get back to chores and my creative efforts throughout tonight and tomorrow again.
I’ll be taking it slow though. Losing 6 lbs. in one day kind of depleted my energy reserves. That and I haven’t eaten anything in a day.
When I do start eating again, I must do a better job with the fruits and veggies.

I’m looking forward to a night of rest, being last night wasn’t one.
There is so much to catch up on tomorrow.
Health is everything.
TV is a nice distraction when you’re under the weather. I watched more in the last 36 hours than I have in years. Think I’ll turn it off the rest of the week.
For some reason the sunset or sunrise on the water makes my soul feel better. It gives me strength. Optimism is gained. Peace of mind is achieved.
As you can see by my last few post, I miss it. Having a week of it was great. I’ll return sooner than later but I’m having withdraw today and I’ll have to get a webcam up later when the time rolls around and toast another day.

You’re in good shape till you’re not.
Mother Nature is trying to kick my behind, but I’m holding my own against her. Thank goodness for power tools.
Maximum tan achieved, without burning. I’m loving summer.
I find myself talking to myself more these days.
Hard work keeps you young but be careful along the way.
I mentioned yesterday that we returned from Ocean City Maryland. The family vacation couldn’t have been better weather wise. Except for a storm that rolled through on Thursday evening.
I knew we were going to get wet so I took the very old Kodak Z812 digital camera and captured a few shots from the inlet parking lot. That camera has seen its day, and is about to become part of the history collection of equipment. Better yet, my granddaughter could put it to use.
A late start for this daily blogger. Just in terms of posting though. I’ve just returned from a short family vacation at Ocean City Maryland. We pulled out of town before 9am to head home. A quick stop at our favorite Eastern Shore Produce stand Wrights Market for some sweet corn, bread, squash, onions, raspberry preserves for my son, BBQ sauce, cantaloupe and some salad dressing all made by them. Oh, also some apple butter.

The weather was great, we spent time on the beach and pool. Had some good meals and did the Boardwalk with the kids one night.
The storms that rolled through Thursday night were something. I got a few shots right before they hit the inlet area that I’ll post later tonight.
Those were some storms last night. The shelf clouds that move into the area were quite impressive. And being the front hasn’t fully moved through this morning the sunrise was completely muted.
So I’ll provide one from days past that hopefully will brighten someone’s morning and maybe my own.
No color in this mornings sky so here is a taste of a good morning. Photo by Mike Hartley
Reflecting is hard for me sometimes. Not to mention the guilt I feel for just not looking forward. So onward to the next post. Sometimes its fun painting with the camera.

Excuse me mam, I already have a few grandchildren to look after. Those are your responsibility even though they are in my yard.
So many deer lately. Photo by Mike Hartley
This might look nice, but I’m concerned with the increase in deer ticks and Lyme Disease in the area. So, if you are out and about, keep an eye on your body and that of the younger ones who are usually rolling around the ground.
Sometimes you’re a fan for life. For instance, my love of the Yankees and Maryland basketball teams. That won’t change. Sometimes things change and change a committed fan a distant one. My example would be the Washington Redskins; we followed them in the 70s and 80s but through a series of bad ownerships loyalty to that team faded. But I’m interested in them again with new ownership and an exciting QB.
I’m a fan of tennis but of no one in particular. I used to be a NASCAR fan but when Senior was killed and Junior retired, I lost all interest. Which was strange because I was a fan before them also.
I’m a fan of the Olympics, but only every 4 years.
I’ve always followed and liked the Green Bay Packers but I’m not a rabid fan.
I’m a fan of kids playing sports. Watching joy and excitement and love of a game is nice.
March Madness has always had a strong grip on me. It’s probably the biggest sporting event between my group of friends and my son.
I was losing interest in baseball till the rule changes which are great and has revitalized my interest in the game.
The NBA has a lot of ego problems. Great basketball but too many head cases. But I’ve always followed the league and have been a longtime Laker fan.
I’ve gotten into Formula 1 and Drag racing recently. I used to watch a ton of Indy car racing when I was younger.
I was a big fan of Thurmond Munson, Len Bias and Dale Earnhardt. All those sudden deaths affected me.

I like stepping out on the deck or back porch and looking at the morning come alive. The deer grazing and the birds playing and chasing each other. Same with the squirrels going around a tree. The sun breaking through and over the trees.
I got to spend a few hours with my daughter yesterday and it was fun just being the two of us. We enjoyed a great lunch at Mt Washington Tavern. Before this we always had a dinner there, so a lunch was a change of pace.
It’s a great place to eat and the service was wonderful. My daughter had Cream of Crab soup and a Shrimp Po Boy. I had Oysters Rockefeller, and the Shrimp Salad wrap, with truffle fries. And for dessert some chocolate and cheesecake bites. Then we walked around the town a bit. Thanks for a great day, honey.

We sat on a few of the benches around town and talked. I get so little one on one time with her I always cherish it. I enjoy hearing about her teaching profession and raising a daughter is always full of entertaining stories from her. I like seeing her smile and being relaxed.

Random Thoughts of the Day
When I get a lot accomplished, before sunrise, it’s a good feeling.
I hope I get to see my sister soon. But the odds are slim.
I’m shedding a few tears while typing this post because my son’s first pet passed away today. The joy that dog gave both my daughter in-law and my son is beyond compare. It pains us both to see them in such despair.
We loved her and it hurts very badly right now.
We would always watch her when they take vacations, and she would always visit when they came. She was so sweet and loving. She brought me a lot of joy and love. As soon as she came in our house, she would use her nose to guide me to the kitchen and stand in front of the freezer till I got the ice cream out.
I loved how adapt she was at opening presents. Gently tearing the wrapping paper away.
She was a rescue, and she certainly rescued our families’ hearts.

We got to say goodbye to her this morning, and the hurt will be with us for a while. That’s the way it is when you lose a love.
I’ve got to finish a carving for them soon. And I’m going to put together a photo book for them and all the shots I have of her over the years.
Driving has always been one of the joys in life to me. It seems to be the passion of a good number of people. From classics to modern missiles, from domestics to imports, from compacts to full size, from beetles to monster trucks, from motorcycles to trikes. It’s all about hitting the road.
And I feel tonight might be a good evening to take a ride. A late Wednesday evening cruise to clear my head. The highways are open ribbons of engineering marvels when empty.
Being I don’t own a monster like the below beauty, I can easily cruise in stealth with the stock exhaust through the night. Enjoying the summer breeze with the top down.

A lot of my friends use car washes now. I still wash my own and dry and polish it. I kind of enjoy it just as much as I did in the 70s when I was doing the same thing. It always feels good when the ride is shining.
I do need to call the mechanic though. My AC is on the fritz. Not that I use it much but it’s nice to have if I get caught in a summer thunderstorm.
As I was cleaning the trunk I ran into my old CD case and realized I had some music in there that I don’t have on the phone so maybe it’s an old school night on the speakers.

The rule changes have made baseball enjoyable again.
Looking forward to getting up each day, is living.
Let’s help turn this thing around.
Someone who seems to crave attention, looks and sounds like a punch-drunk fighter.
My better half and daughter had a wonderful day together. I love seeing that. And I know her mother and mine would love to see that relationship.
What a beautiful day it was. Mostly sunny but a few clouds gave me a break from the sun every so often. Spent some of it mowing which is my meditation time. I’m trying to relax a bit more and let go of some things.
Wow, the Prince of Darkness John Michael (Ozzy) Osbourne has passed. Another soundtrack of my life silenced. A couple of my favorite Ozzy tunes – Changes – Mama, I’m Coming Home and of course Paranoid, Iron Man, I Don’t Know, Crazy Train, Close My Eyes Forever, No More Tears.
Doing this blog in relative obscurity isn’t a bad thing.

I don’t spend a lot of time looking at stats. And I rarely look at all time stats, but it caught my eye this morning that this will be my 4,000th post.
When I started blogging in 2014, I really didn’t have a great idea of where I was going with it and what I wanted in it. And over a decade later I still don’t fully know, apart from a few things.
I wanted to share my photography and a few thoughts. I haven’t done as much, as well or as often as I hoped, but I’m still here trying.
I’m sure I’ve used too many words, some incorrectly or with incorrect punctuation. And maybe at the end not a clear point. But I’m trying.
I know it’s an unorganized mess. I’ve got an old theme I need to get rid of and move on to something current. I don’t utilize the tools at my disposal. But I’m trying.
Sometimes I question whether I should be doing something different or focusing my energies elsewhere.
I hope it’s something that has touched a few people. I hope it’s something my family and friends might reflect on someday.
All I know is it needs a lot more work, and I hope to get the opportunity to do it and make it something that I’m proud of. Here’s to the next 4K.
What would you change about modern society? – Now there is a question for someone writing a book instead of a daily prompt.
Wow, the dozens of things just off the top of my head I would change overwhelmed me. Instead of listing all those out, I think I’ll just say we must change our mindset. We have to ask ourselves who we are and get involved in making that happen.
Not counting on others to take care of us. Not counting on a few to make decisions on who will lead all of us. If everyone got involved in voting and paid attention to what they were voting for would be a good first step.
But it’s not just politics/government. It’s what we have become. Technology has given us many wonderful advances. But we haven’t looked at the negative effects as much.
How we treat each other could use some work. The emphasis on wealth and greed could use some balance with compassion and empathy.
Maybe we could start to get to know our neighbors again, or maybe the kid’s teachers and other public servants. And treat everyone with respect. Maybe work towards the truth together instead of making up separate ones.
Oh yeah, maybe we could eliminate WAR.

I’ve had some difficulty focusing lately. And when I ran across this image which was slightly out of focus, I thought it was fitting. But in some ways calming. Sometimes when things aren’t clear, maybe it’s just not the moment for clarity.
My head is spinning also. Photo by Mike Hartley
In some ways the lack of clarity on so many levels takes me back to the mid 60s to the late 70s. Turmoil in the world and my personal life. Almost like that phase is repeating itself now. Only now with more aches and pains.
So many things are on edge. I think I’ll try to put that chaos out of my mind tomorrow.
Random Thoughts of the Day
It’s therapy day. I mow grass for a few hours and think.
CBS cancels “The Late Show” – that tells me something about that network now doesn’t it. The Kool-Aid got in that water cooler also. Excuse me, CBS – I call Bullshit. I’ll watch his show for 10 months and then avoid CBS.
I saw a saying on FB that said, “I found growing up in the 60s was a lot more fun than being in my 60s. ” But then I thought about all the memories I’ve acquired in the journey and that has been even more fun.
Another great meal at Oscars in Woodstock this evening.
Well, maybe I’ll take myself. Running the sand between my fingers and toes, working my body into the sand through the blanket is my therapy. Soaking up rays and feeling that warm ocean breeze, sounds of the waves hitting the shore, feeling that cool rush of saltwater over my feet.
Sand and stones. Photo by Mike Hartley
Cruising Ocean Highway with the top down and pulling into Dumser’s for some ice cream. Or maybe one of the many great establishments providing a cold beverage and good meal. A visit to the marina to watch today’s catch come in from the fleet of charters or if I’m lucky enough to catch the White Marlin tournament which is one of the biggest on the Atlantic.
And of course, wandering the town with the camera from the inlet up to the lighthouse in Fenwick at the state line. A walk on the boardwalk for some people watching and maybe a game or two in the arcade taking me back to my youth. A walk out to the rocks at the point of the inlet and take in the view turning completely around a few times.
Back up the road to midtown and a stop at Fager’s Island on the bay to catch sunset and listen to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture perfectly timed to end when the sun disappears. Have a quick bite, listen to the band, maybe move my body to a tune and then point the magic carpet home.
Sounds like a good plan.
Random Thoughts of the Day
There is a lot of wisdom in listening.
I think Phil Collins was an underrated drummer.
Just in case you haven’t noticed, the takeover is almost complete, wake up and act now before it’s too late.
I should have been a musician.
Sounds like someone is afraid of opening pandoras box.
A fine start to the day. My granddaughter spent the night and wanted bacon this morning so I got up early and cooked a pound of it. I love bacon myself. She only ate one slice. And with ketchup. She’s killing me.
Today I caught up with an old friend. One I worked a long time with and who has supported me many times in my life, both personally and professionally. She is a beautiful person inside and out. One that inspires and brings comfort. And as with many friends, one that has seen many struggles and never lets them keep her from moving forward, where many would have stopped before. Another strong woman in my life. I’m blessed with a lot of them.
I can’t wait to see her.

It’s okay to have an opinion. It’s okay to express it. But be prepared to hear an alternative opinion. And if you can’t handle that keep your mouth shut.
Do you ever have those days when a particular musical group really touches a note with you?
Someone is having trouble controlling the narrative. Could it be Karma is finally growing a backbone.
I’m excited about tomorrow. There are a few hours I’ll be in the driver’s seat going through gears repeatedly with the top down and the music flowing with no destination in mind other than looking for some smooth roads without a lot of traffic. There will be stops here and there to pull the camera out and try to capture some local flavor of summer. I’ll put my ice cream gift card in the wallet and treat myself.
Which activities make you lose track of time? – Not a bad question from the daily writing prompt.
There have been so many over my lifetime that it’s hard to recall. They say time flies when you’re having fun and I’ve guess I’ve had my share because time certainly has gotten away from me.
In some ways it’s okay to lose track of time if you’re doing it for the right reasons. But time is a precious gift and one not to be wasted.
The endless games played as a youth. From whole days spent on the basketball courts to even the early days of tag, time would always seem irrelevant. Riding bikes, playing in the snow or a stream would pass hours that seemed like a second.
As I grew up, working hard would always make me lose track of time. But before you knew it the workday was over.
Sitting on a beach always seems to melt away any sense of time. Only the sun changing positions in the sky late in the day shakes me to the time.
Being with my family is an easy one to lose track of time with. Most of the time it seems they are leaving just after getting here, but it’s usually been hours.
When I’m photographing or writing sometimes time will get away from me.
My best friends and I have a weekly vigil. Just to blow off steam and share some stories. We always lose track of time on those nights.
Laying in the hammock looking at the clouds slowly moving across the sky.

It kind of inspired me to schedule a few more days at the shore before the season comes to an end. Of course, for me the season doesn’t end till late October. We get some nice weather in September and October. The water gets a bit too cool that last month, but September is still good sunning and swimming weather.
I love watching dolphins, just like I like to watch the deer wander through my backyard. I grew up with woods behind my childhood home and I’ve lived here for almost 4 decades with woods behind here. I spend time looking out a bay window which gives me a grand view of our back and being it drops off so fast it’s a nice overhead view.
I’m always watching nature. Just saw a woodchuck on the way home this afternoon near the entrance of our neighborhood. So back outside I go to see what else the earth wants me to interact with.

When I was very young, I washed a lot of dishes. I guess I had a flashback while cleaning up from dinner this evening.
People are this never-ending puzzle I started long ago.
Going to bite the bullet and replace the old laptop. Now comes the difficult decision.
Just looked at the list and it’s a very packed week. So much for the schedule I was thinking about. I’ll adjust because that is what life is about. A never-ending series of adjustments and modifications. And being a senior, it’s going to be one after another.
But the few free minutes I will have I’ll make very good use of it. I’m going to work my behind off this evening. Oh yeah, catch a few minutes of the Home Run Derby.
I was thinking back when I started blogging and I would use photos I had taken to kind of inspire the days thoughts or topics. I’ve gotten away from that, and I feel the need to return to that formula.

This flower made me think about all the beauty possible but the UGLYNESS killing it on so many levels is making me sick and it’s time to rock and roll against it. This greed and lack of compassion is out of control, and it only keeps being reinforced by those in power.
I’m going to have to work harder for a change. Not for me, but for my children and grandchildren.

It’s good to be feeling better today. Whatever attacked my sinuses this weekend has abated.

My better half returned home last night from a short trip. It was kind of fun having the house to myself for a few days. Speakers instead of headphones. Cooking things without worrying about the smell or time of day or night.
Bouncing down the stairs like a herd of thundering elephants because there isn’t anyone that could be disturbed or woke up. A few dishes were in the sink for more than a few hours. I had more real estate in bed.
But I’m very glad to have her back again. I didn’t know the answer to some of the questions I had.

It’s been a fun morning. The sun is up, the baby deer sleeping in my backyard has moved on and I’ve got a list of tasks a mile long to plow through. But I see we have some storms moving through this afternoon and evening.
I had thought about going to the ocean for a day, but obligations before pleasure, so maybe next week.

Haven’t felt my best today. Maybe too much sun this morning. I’m staying the rest of the afternoon. This is the first summer I can remember when the heat is getting to me.
In the space of less than 2 miles I saw a Volkswagen Atlas run a red light, sit at the next light and miss it because they aren’t paying attention. Do 50mph in a 30mph zone and then an illegal U turn at one of the busier intersections in the county.
Never a dull moment on the roads.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Being happy is a decision. Like I’ve said, I haven’t made the right decision at times in my life.
Isn’t it amazing with some people that they are always right and if they aren’t it’s always someone else’s fault.
It’s taken me 6 decades, but I’ve finally learned how to relax a bit.
The deer population is getting large again. I’ve seen groups as large as 8-10 together recently. I had a pair of young ones sleeping in my backyard yesterday. And a herd of about 6 including the buck below going through the neighbor’s front yard.
Cute critters when they are young.
But boy can they be destructive to gardens.
I forgot to put up some mesh screens this year around some of their favorites and paid for it.
I’m not crazy about deer ticks either and the more deer I see the more I’m looking at my legs when I mow.
Good morning, a simple phrase that I find used less often now. Others like good afternoon, good evening, how are you, good day, hello, have a great day and others are all becoming less shared.
People wave to each other less often also. I used to play a little game by making eye contact with people I’d be passing walking the streets of DC on my way to work from the parking garage. I’d smile and node and see how many would smile or node back. I was surprised how many would smile also.
Well, I’ll just continue to be me even if people choose not to respond.
A fun day so far. Pictures from the kids and grandkids at the parade. A trip to the local ice cream spot with my better half. About to get the cushions for the deck chairs out and sit outside this evening a bit.
Not only is it a Friday, but it’s also the 4th of July. We passed on an invite to a parade this morning with the kids. But that doesn’t mean we won’t appreciate the day. I grilled out last night and I hope to grill out tomorrow night and through the weekend. Tonight, I’m kicking back.
We haven’t been out to fireworks for some time now. Not that we don’t have a lot of neighbors who are into private displays. I remember taking the kids to the county events when they were young.
A few years at work I got to go to the top of the Washington Post buildings in DC and watch the fireworks from the National Mall. The only benefit of working that holiday night.
Be safe this evening. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’ve pulled the cover off the car and took a ride to the hardware store. Good thing I have a convertible because I learned the AC has stopped working. I guess after 9 years an issue of some kind is due. Could just need a charge. I can’t remember having that done. Not that I use the AC much at all.
No problem at all. I love this car and will just fix things on it from here on out. I think I’ll head out late tonight for a long cruise.

That Hot Honey Chicken Sub from Jersey Mikes is Goooood.
I like Backyard Billy’s just over the Bay Bridge in Grasonville.
What’s the old saying? A day late and a dollar short. Time for the Thursday Doors post. Sorry it’s Friday but the week has been full of distractions.

No time like the present to get moving so when I finish this post I’m off to the shower and then out for the golden hour.

Usually, I’ll do a few blog posts in the morning and at least before noon. Today has been different. I sat down this morning with a bit of writer’s block. That hasn’t afflicted me in a while. Then I got busy with other appointments and low and behold only a few hours till sunset.
Better late than never. I like keeping my daily streak going. Oddly enough it was the daily writing prompt that brought me to a stop. I’ll post the answer to that question later.
Spent part of the day getting a quote on some home improvement work and materials. Something that has been needed for a while and now we have those funds for it.
This evening, I hope to put in some time, providing our power stays on with that thunder I hear outside now, on practicing my pastel drawing and maybe some reading. I shot some wildlife earlier today but I’m not going to download it till after tomorrows shooting because I don’t believe there is much there. That was one big buck that I got a few shots of but the sun hadn’t come up yet and I didn’t switch the ISO so I’m not hopeful.
Here we are at the last moments of June. I’m proud I made better use of this month. I’m disappointed because I could do better. So, I’m going to finish strong tonight or just get a good jump on July.
My car pulled over for these. The flowers were pretty much a match for the color of the car. Driving in the country is so much fun. Apart from those who can’t stay on their side of the road, which seems to be increasingly difficult for a lot of people.
I’ll be out riding later tonight. Photo by Mike Hartley
June has flown by, but it’s been a lot of fun. We didn’t get away as much, but we did manage a nice trip and time with the children and grandchildren is priceless. But still a day and a half to make good use of before we get into July.
I do need to get reading more and I think I’ll get on that task now. I have two books I’d like to finish this coming week. Whoops I almost forgot a few woodworking projects I also need to finish up. I should really get an assistant.
Time to move the workbench outside so I don’t have the cleanup I do inside.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Not the day to be pushing a mower but nature doesn’t pause its growth. I don’t mind, it’s good exercise.
Grilling out sounds like a good idea later. Might be between the raindrops though.
I’m not a fan of Verizon. And they are about to catch my wrath tomorrow morning.
People are a trip. I’m just not on their roadmap.
This bill before the Senate and Congress is not one big. beautiful bill. Unless you call death a beautiful thing. Less healthcare for the poor, higher healthcare cost for the middle class and tax breaks for the rich while adding debt to our children and grandchildren’s generations.
I’ve always been observant of older people. My parents taught me that from a very young age. Hold the door for them, don’t run in front of them, be patient, help them carry things, respect your elders, you know common courtesy stuff. But now that I might be one, I’m looking at them, us, me differently.
What catches my eye now is people coping with disabilities, both physical and mental. Before it was always a sense of compassion. Now, in addition to that, it’s wondering what I might have to deal with and how I might overcome them.
Mentally I started to notice a slight difference in my last year of work. I was having to look through my notes at times for stuff that used to be root memory. I set a high bar for myself so nobody else even noticed but I did, and I didn’t like the feeling of slipping.
I’ve been very lucky so far. I have friends that have hip and knee replacements. So far, I’m operating with all my original parts minus a few to cancer. I get around fairly well, all the limbs working and the mind is still clear most days.
But I know changes are coming. I’m already adapting in a lot of ways. My eyesight has probably been the worst decline. I wear glasses full time now. Luckily my other senses are in tip-top shape.
My strength and stamina aren’t what they were. Cold and heat affect me more. I must think about what I can, but shouldn’t do now which is a new element. My better half is good at identifying these things.
From here on out I’ll be dealing with adjustments. Stuff I used to take for granted. Like running around the yard playing water games with my granddaughter till my right knee gave out on me again.
Grandchildren will keep me feeling young and old at the same time for hopefully years to come.
What are your daily habits? – The daily writing prompts getting all personal again.
Wake before sunrise most days. Take meds. Do some morning writing and photo editing or printing. Read, watch or listen to some news. Emails/texts/calls to friends and family. Read some blogs. Home and yard chores.
Spend time with my better half, exercise, tinker in my workshop. Listen to music, find something to laugh about, and try to eat well.
Get outside and if the sun is out, soak some of it in and look at the sky for a while. Listen and look at nature.
If I’m lucky I’ll spend some time photographing and drawing.
I used to work for daily newspaper and work every day, but those days have ended.

I heard someone say a week or two ago that it was cancer survivor’s month. So, I Googled it and it says – June is National Cancer Survivors Month and health officials say healing is not only about healing your body but also your mind.
My body has healed a couple of times from cancer. My mind, not so much. It’s hard to put it out of your mind when you’re getting tested. I had almost put it out of my mind after the first one. After 5 years they switched to an annual checkup, but two years later a new cancer appeared. After the second bout, I haven’t been the same.
In some ways that is good. As the saying goes – Make the rest of your life, the best of your life. And I try to remember that each day. But I have this constant concern. Somewhat due to being tested more often the last few years.
I am fixated on the cancer aspect of health because it seems the most threatening. Each commercial for any medicine I see for various cancers gives me the creeps. Just from the list of side effects alone. Each day you hear or know about someone’s fight with it.
If memory serves me right, 1 in 3 will deal with it. I also think I saw the stat of 18 million survivors in the US, so we have a lot of company.
I remember statistics meaning nothing when you get it. I didn’t care what percentage of people come down with that type and survive it. I just wondered if I would be on the wrong side of the numbers. You may be interested in what the numbers are for survival but even that is a scary question to ask the doctor. People want to know those, so they can encourage you, or comfort you.
You do your best to live each day. As a senior though I keep wondering if a new ache or pain is something else. I try not to focus on it or even go there but it’s impossible some days. Another good reason to stay active and keep the mind busy with other things.
I was thinking about it today because one of my sister in-laws sister, is undergoing cancer surgery today. I wish her the best and will drop them a note later. I think about a few friends it’s taken already. Last night I saw a bandage on a very close friend from surgery.
So, it’s not possible to ignore when so many are battling. I’m just not interesting in going another round with it.
I hope I never have to go through those doors again. Photo by Mike Hartley
I haven’t gotten out to shoot squat this week. Watching our granddaughter 3 days and a trip to see an old friend yesterday have eaten my week up so far but I’ll get out tomorrow and do some fresh shooting for next week.

The Lighthouse Club is where we have stayed a few times in Ocean City. It’s one of the few places in Ocean City that sits out by itself. We like doing the offseason in May, September or October where the weather is still warm and the water in the fall is still swimmable.
The bottom floor community area is relaxing if the weather isn’t tops but sitting outside on the rockers and watching the sunset is a real treat.
One of my best friends doors and his Golden Retriever.
Took a long walk with an old friend yesterday and I hope to repeat that process many times in the future. A few years ago, he moved to southern Pennsylvania, and I hadn’t visited his home yet so off I went. It was an easier drive than I thought so I’ll be more inclined to do it.
We shared many special times together so there are many things there to review, and we are both interested in current events and sharing our takes on them. We are both retired and trying to stay busy.
Long as he’s outside, we are cool. Enter my home and get swatted. Photo by Mike Hartley
He turned me on to trekking poles on the walk we took. I’ve never used one before, but it made a difference I feel. And that was just using one. I think when I do more wooded trails I might think about 2 but I’ll start off with one. It was good support for my weak right knee and back.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Life is good when you don’t feel the need to get away. But once you think about getting away life becomes better.
Determining what idiots not to listen to in life is extremely important.
Having friends is important. Picking the right ones is critical.
The hardest decisions in life are usually never about the job.
If you were forced to wear one outfit over and over again, what would it be? – Another softball question from the daily writing prompt.
That outfit would be a pair of shorts, a tee shirt and flipflops. I like casual and comfortable. I guess that means I’ll have to move to a warmer climate. Then again, I can wait because it seems to be coming to me.
Life is short, enjoy the view. Photo by Mike Hartley
Another hot one on the way today, so be careful out there.
I was out before sunrise and stopped grabbing a few images. Had trouble keeping moisture off the lens. 78 degrees and 88% humidity makes it a sticky morning. That sun will quickly burn it all off though.
How do you practice self-care? – An interesting ask by the daily writing prompt.
Well, I’ve never been good at eating well or making sleep a priority. I’m making efforts to turn both of those things around.
I do walk and I like being out in nature. I exercise a bit but not as much as I should. I love to drive so I do that often.
I do things like listening to music and finding ways to express myself. I like being with people. I love working on my hobbies and sharing them. And being with my better half certainly is very important.
I love to laugh and find things to make others laugh.
I haven’t practiced enough self-care in my lifetime. Don’t make that mistake. Get off self-destructive tracks.
Practice some self-care in this heat please. Keep pumping fluids if you must be outside for periods.
I thought the name groundhog meant they were grounded. Not this guy.

When you remove check and balances things get out of whack.
Haven’t felt heat like this in a while.
The amount of advertising for drugs with serious side effects for serious illness scares me to death.
Caught this old timer in Fenwick Island Delaware. We visited a shop called the Pottery Place which has some great things in it. And on the way back to the car this kind of stood out.
I’m no Volkswagen expert but I’d guess mid-70s, I could be way off. The color is impossible to ignore, and the whitewalls/rim are a nice touch. Along with the rooftop luggage rack and chrome trim it’s a nice little package.
I thought it was a bright way to start off our Sunday morning.
Those were some nice storms that rolled through early this morning. They got me out of bed a little after 2am. I did grab a quick nap this morning but now I’m off on the day’s adventures.
I got some of the yard cut today before the afternoon storms rolled through. Even got the mower put away, the shed closed, extra grass raked up and gas can, and oil was put away before the rain started. Boy did the shower feel good. It was so hot and humid. I forgot to wear a hat though and the top of my head feels a little warm.
I’m surprised the John Deere is still getting around this year. I was about to throw in the towel on it, but it will hopefully get me through this season.
Well enough about work. Time for FUN. And what is FUN? The Beach is FUN. And I see nothing but sunshine and heat for the next week after tomorrow’s storms. Of course, long term forecasts are subject to change but I’m going with the good news now and planning to point that Miata east till I see sand and water on one of the next 7 days.
I couldn’t have stagged this. I was tracking a sailboat just before this and posted that shot earlier. Then I followed this powerboat and I guess my timing was just right. Photo by Mike Hartley
I had to report for jury duty yesterday morning. Not my idea of fun but I’ve never avoided it in the past, so off I went. I hadn’t been to this new Circuit Court in Howard County off Bendix Road before. It’s nice. I’ll have to go back and photograph it on a sunny day.
I read that when you are over 70, which should be the next time I get called, I have the option to opt out. I was surprised how few older people I saw there in the jury assembly room.
Anyway, as usual, I didn’t get selected. I guess I have been 4-5 times and haven’t gotten chosen to be a juror. I hate having to get dressed up for it. Sat there for 3 hours till we were dismissed.
Donated $30 we were paid to the Howard County Foster Care program.

Random Thoughts of the Day
I don’t mind a few rainy days. As long as it’s surrounded by long stretches of sun.
There is a new face of Trump Derangement Syndrome locked up in Minnesota.
The roads are both a beautiful and ugly ballet at the same time.
Oh, by the way Senator Mike Lee of Utah is a piece of crap.
What countries do you want to visit? – I can rock and roll with this question from the daily writing prompt.
I’d like to start by seeing some of my own country. Things like NYC and some of our grand national parks out west. Maybe the Key West in Florida and San Diego or San Francisco. I hear Charleston and Savana are beautiful. Maybe Denver or Boston also.
My better half wants to go to Ireland, so I want to go to Ireland.
I’d like to see Italy, France, Spain, UK and Australia if I were to want to travel that much.
Then again if I get no further than the beaches of Maryland and Delaware, that is okay with me.

And while there was no sunset viewable today, we can hope for tomorrow.
It was a gloomy day outside, but it was a grand one indoors with our granddaughter. I love that she is so relaxed and happy here. Running and playing, drawing and building forts. We play games, make treats and let her use her imagination. And we make sure she knows she’s loved.
Well, it’s game time so time to pull up the recliner and catch another close contest while getting the last fix of basketball for some time.
Some feel the need, the need for speed. Not me, I’m cruising into the week. A good friend described his Monday and Tuesday as cramming a week into those two days. I’m so glad I don’t have to put the pedal to the metal like that.
This sucker was loud and fast. Photo by Mike Hartley
Not that I’m slacking, I’m just going at my pace. I have grand goals for the week, but possible jury duty awaits.
I’ve gotten off to a good start on the computer but I’m going to switch gears to keep my grandchild entertained and work on her creative skills. She loves her drawing room. And I love drawing with her.

This getting old stuff is filled with challenges. Today I have a couple aches conspiring against me, but that isn’t going to stop me.
I have a quick errand for a friend this morning and then lunch with my daughter. A couple of home things to attend to, but I hope I can focus on getting some work on my hobbies and read the book a friend recommended for my back. If it’s a good one, I’ll be raving about it here in the future.
As a father I’m thankful for 2 great kids. I’m thankful they are healthy, hardworking, smart, and loving parents themselves now. I’m glad they are better than me. They up the bar on my proud meter all the time.
I try to tell them I love them every chance I get. I write them often and we call and see each other when we can. I’ve busted my gut for them, and they are very appreciative of the efforts. It’s tough being a dad. I’ve taken the blame for stuff, I’ve always wished I could have provided more.
I probably/know of a few habits they could do without. I could relax a bit and I think chew quieter for my son. Hey, I enjoy my food.
Being a father has shown me rewards I didn’t know I had possible growing up. It’s also caused my beard to go grey before it’s time.
One of the many things I’m very proud of is how my children look out for each other. I’ve seen many families fractured but I believe these two will always be close, supportive and there for each other.
A good Father’s Day is waking up feeling confident that your children are happy in life.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I feel the need, the need for sand.
To all the fathers busting their behinds and making the effort every day, happy Father’s Day.
Being older is learning about adapting at the time in life when we are least adaptable.
I wonder what percentage of people say, “thank you Siri”?
What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily? – Now there is a brain twister from the daily writing prompt. I have a lot of old things, now what gets use?
I had to think about this one for a minute but then, there it was. I was sitting at my father’s desk working on this post and an email to my son wishing him a happy Father’s Day and editing photos and realized the desk was the oldest thing I use daily.
The computer has always been on that desk and that means the last 45 years at least. It’s a beautiful desk, made of cherry wood. It’s not real big, good for a laptop and prevents me from being a pig with papers building up.
Kind of fitting this question would come up on Father’s Day. A reminder of his presence in my life. And when my days are done, I’ll have his desk refinished for my son. Maybe I’m doing work he didn’t get to complete.
I know flowers like the rain. And there is a good bit coming. But they also like the sun. It started to get a bit overcast as I was finishing up outside. So, like them I was just soaking up the last few minutes of sunshine.
We went out to dinner at Ledo Pizza and then to the Snowball stand for a treat before the rain started. As I sit here yawning, I know it won’t be a late night. But then again, there is a baseball and basketball game I would like to see.
Brightening up my afternoon. Photo by Mike Hartley
It’s been a good week and I’m looking forward to the weekend. I do have to get out and get some new images regardless of the weather. That just might be my focus. How do people handle the rain.
I guess I could capture some scary car video of people attempting to drive on wet roadways. They can’t do it in dry conditions, so you are guaranteed some good footage. That would be too easy though. I’ll have to see what I can come up with.
Random Thoughts of the Day
With the rain I sense a creative streak at the easel coming this weekend.
It’s been a good year. But the best is yet to come.
I really have to finish a project for my granddaughter.
Ah that first 90 degree day of the year. Kind of late I’m thinking for this area. I spent most of the day power washing and cleaning yesterday. A good physical workout.
I didn’t get a chance to take the go-cart for a spin while the sun was up but today is another chance. All I need to do is grab the keys and go. It will be the last warm day for a bit.
But first another round of power washing. Today is the back siding, gutters and walls. Oh, another section of sidewalk and steps also. Then that unit is put away till I take it to my son’s home and help him with his deck. It’s a training mission so when I get too old, he can come do my home.
I thought I’d brighten up the mid afternoon with a little color before I head back outside to swelter in the heat. So here is a shot from St Michaels Maryland of Simpatico Italian goods.
What notable things happened today? – Kind of strange question from the daily writing prompt.
Let’s look here. They want to know how I slept this morning because that is all I’ve accomplished besides sitting down at the computer. I slept fine, thank you.
Or maybe they want me to wait until the end of the day to respond to this question. Nope, the time is now for answering the daily writing prompt
Or they want me to do historical research. I love history but I’m not into regurgitating this morning.
I do know 50 years ago that I had just graduated high school, and I believe I was headed to the ocean this weekend. Ah the days of youth. Time has passed by so quickly.
I know it’s my daughters-in-law’s birthday. And, their pet dog celebrates the same day. I love them both dearly.
Here are some notable things I hope happen today.
I hope to finish my home power washing project.
Both my better half and I have an urge for a good pizza so I hope that it will be our dinner tonight.
I hope to take a ride on country roads without being tailgated, cut off or run off the road.
I hope pain meds aren’t needed.
I’d like to take some great photos and finish a charcoal drawing I started the other day.
I’d like to remember to put the cover on the car tonight before the 5 straight days of rain starts.
Sort of like me when I go to the ocean. I’m a bit older than that first Mustang but I feel like the second one still. Photo by Mike Hartley
We spent late afternoon and early evening in Easton Maryland last week. As we wandered down the streets which was mostly rolled up for a Thursday night except for the restaurants and a few stores, I thought I’d practice some Street Photography for an hour before dinner.
Easton is a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, in the heart of Talbot County.
In 2023 there were 17,225 people living there. Two of them are my friends from many decades ago.
I like it because it has a lot of things art related.
It’s an easy town to walk also.
I have yet to sample all the great eating establishments there. The few I have tried have been great.
Lots of shops for my better half to look at while I photograph.
Lots of county office buildings from the past and some quite new.
I’m not much for city life but I could see this town growing on me.
I find it to be a very friendly place.
Also a very patriotic town.
Bricks or a gate everywhere you look.
Frederick Douglass / Liberty below.
I have to stop walking and shooting at the same time.
We will make a return trip this summer or fall and maybe stay at the Tidewater Inn below.
Well, too many photos. Hey, there is no such thing as too many pictures. So one last one.
Maybe another post after the games tonight. If not, have a great evening.
I was out working in the yard wishing I was looking at this view in Ocean City Maryland. I will be soon again, but not today. I am working on my tan as I tend to chores.

But like any smart senior, I’m pacing myself with a break in front of this box. And one can’t forget the trips to the kitchen to make sure the fridge is still working, and the ice cream isn’t melting.

After some weeding, leaf blower action, deck maintenance and raking. I’m about done for the day. I’ve aggravated the nerve in my neck and I’m paying for that now and maybe into the evening.
Such is life, I’ll adapt and move onto something that won’t irritate it. Have a good evening.
Actually, I envy this man. Living in a small town and having the ease of riding around on one of these bikes. Caught him on the streets of Easton Maryland late afternoon.
Easy Rider. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’ve always liked the eastern shore of Maryland but I’m falling more and more in love with it. And this summer it will be a common destination for the Miata and I to cruise and explore.
Envy is something I don’t spend a lot of time on, but I can’t say I’m without it at moments in my life. I try to stay busy appreciating all I have and building on that.
Usually, it’s just a moment. About 10 minutes before I saw this rider above, I passed this Vette parked on the street. Of course, I paused because I love automobiles. It’s a convertible, 2 seater, sporty and handles well along with some get up and go. So right up my alley.
I have to add a garage before I’d get one of these. Photo by Mike Hartley
Nice but I don’t need the tickets and attention. Nor do I want to risk the high speed runs I’d have to feel it do. I can probably buy 3 of my Miata’s for the price of this one. And so far, that fun machine with the manual transmission has satisfied my motoring needs.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I had a great evening with some friends. And one fixed great Rueben sandwiches for dinner. Nice way to start a week.
Warning – Idiots at the helm. See RFK Jr. for instance.
I have a lot of productive ideas. Now I’ll have to see if I have a lot of productive follow-through today.
I opened the work shed earlier than usual today. I’m coming for you Mother Nature.
I’ve seen my buddy “Box Turtle” more in the last few weeks than in the last year or two. I wish he would make an appearance when the grandkids are here.
I’m off to an early start and being productive this day. I thought this was a good photo to lead off a Monday with. I wish the wind vane and plane direction were a little more aligned, but it was close. I shot it in Easton Maryland last Thursday.

I’ve been experiencing issues all morning with my Verizon Fios TV signal. I’m going to give them a call in a moment to get a tech out again. Since the upgrade, there’s been several issues.
It’s too wet to cut grass so that will have to wait another hour. Which puts a smile on my face because I will have some more time to create.
Random Thoughts of the Day
The wildlife around my home seems to have increased this year. I guess they find us nature friendly.
Feeling bad about one sick grandchild. Feeling good about a picture of the other 2 looking cute on a Monday morning.
Funny how things come full cycle. As with most older people, I take meds daily and it’s never been an issue. But lately I’ve been getting a few caught going down. Usually, the first one. Then I laughed and remembered what I would tell my mother. Take a good sip of fluid first to wet the tunnel. Been easier since that.
If humans had taglines, what would yours be? – The daily writing prompt with a request out of my wheelhouse.
This one made me think for a bit. It sounds like a job for my marketing department if I had one. Now where is that multipurpose hat I use? Well, here are a few attempts at something that I’m no good at.
A fairly productive day but why stop now with 3 hours to go. I’ll knock out some editing tonight and work on making some prints for several projects. Just installed some better lighting in the workroom so that hopefully it will help with my design skills or show me my errors earlier.

It was great getting to the beach for a few days this week. And the perfect weather we had was a nice stroke of luck. I’m pretty sure there is going to be another day this month where the forecast is perfect, and I’ll be pulling out well before sunrise so I can spend the day soaking up the sun and environment.
Maybe sit down and pick some crabs, enjoy an ice cream soda, cruise the town and photograph the day away.
We are beginning to sail into summer. Photo by Mike Hartley
But till that day comes I should get back to some local photography, so I’ll head out tomorrow for some new images.

My first grandchild will be completing kindergarten soon. Excitement for her because of how she looks at learning and made many friends. Papa is so proud, and a bit shaken by how fast that time went from holding her as an infant.
The importance of something depends on your perspective.
Sports used to be inspiring to me. And it is at times still. But the gambling focus and ads are killing it for me. I’m not sure it’s done the fans any favors and I’m guessing the players feel a lot less safe now. I find that sad. I think I’ll try to catch a little league game this week at the local park.
What are the most important things needed to live a good life? – A nice question for a Sunday from the daily writing prompt.
I would start with health obviously. Without that most other things are difficult to enjoy. Next would be love. Having children and grandchildren has been a nice touch. Some important work or passion. Maybe fortunate enough to live in a nice climate or go to one. Good and plentiful food.
Great friends that bring laughter and support, while you give back the same and more. The ability and desire to learn.
Live a long time and have nothing but great memories to reflect on in your final days or moments that leave a smile on your face.
Never owned a boat, but being on one is the good life. As long as it stays afloat. Photo by Mike Hartley
We took a few days away from home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland this week. Some beautiful weather, beautiful sights, great food, restful evenings and worked on my tan in the sand.

Much has changed and much has stayed the same in my favorite beach town. I wasn’t in town but a few minutes when I saw a new sign going up. And I really like the message.
By the time we walked to the end of the boardwalk, stopped for a snack, the installation was complete on the way back for this shot.
Like the sign says. Plus it’s a Friday. Photo by Mike Hartley
Life is good but the yard needs cutting. Oh, it’s raining, what a shame. I guess that chore will be moved to Saturday or Sunday weather depending.
But first downloading some more of the shooting I did last night and today in Easton and St. Michaels Maryland.
On second thought, I think I’ll go finish the second half of that shrimp salad sandwich and pretend I’m feeling that cool ocean breeze.
Random Thoughts of the Day
I’ve discovered I shouldn’t go shopping alone for the grandchildren. I would overbuy.
I’m loving this feud between Musk and Trump.
I wish we could put out a sign that says, “this state is full.” Traffic is out of control.
My daughter got me a sign for my office. “The only B.S. I need in my life is: BEACH & SUNSHINE” – I love it.
The rains came Friday evening and this Saturday morning had that fresh smell to it.

The pressure was on to finish something important Saturday. But first I had a little fun with the family. We had an afternoon together and a great lunch from Bare Bones. The grandchildren played, the children took turns taking care of the mobile ones while we took turns holding the baby.
What a special time in life. It’s just a marvel to feel those little fingers squeeze mine.
So just after they left to return home, I sat down to work on a speech about 5pm, and the power went out from the high winds we were having. 5 hours later it’s restored and I was back to work.
It’s going to be a long night.
Random Thoughts of the Day
When you visit your loved ones resting place, it’s both calming and upsetting.
I’ve got to take a picture of Cheetos in a taco shell.
There is a limit to stress. It’s called the breaking point.
I’m not going to celebrate till it’s here, but I see some warmer weather headed out way later this week.
These weekly challenges roll around too quickly. I’m just too busy in between, that is the problem. Again, I apologize for having to dip into my vault of old photos again for this week;s Thursday Doors.
Thanks again to the creator of Thursday Doors and the link to Dan’s Site – No Facilities to see many more talented displays of doors.

There is far too many new ones to be captured.

I must get out and apply myself. That inch or more of rain tomorrow won’t help the process.
When I was young there was a phrase when you lost a race badly. It was “Getting your doors blown off.” I guess this race was a little closer because they are still attached.
I’ve never owned a yellow car. Photo by Mike Hartley
I’ve never owned a yellow car. I’ve owned a white one, a blue one, a green one, a black one, a red one, a gold one, a maroon one, a grey one and even one with stripes.
Enough about cars tonight. I’ve got a long evening of writing and printing ahead. Maybe catch a few minutes of NBA playoff ball and then hopefully a few hours sleep. That has been difficult to come by till complete exhaustion sets in and then its still broken.
Memorial Day weekend and temps in the 60s and low 70s making one think of early spring, not the brink of summer. I still got outside in shorts but having to put on a sweatsuit jacket for the morning errands isn’t right.
Pain became an issue this weekend. I started off in poor spirits mentally also but changed that. I fired up the grill, saw the children and grandchildren for a short bit.
And here it is midweek and the temps in the low 50s today and rain are not my idea for the end of May. Unfortunately, the pain is still a companion. Time to make that orthopedic appointment.
I need sun to work on my tan and loosen up this tightly wound body. I need some sand for a bed. I hope next week looks better because this one is a wash.

I’m frustrated that I haven’t been interacting with other bloggers more often. Time has been flying by and consumed by many other priorities. Some planned, some not. Like making a speech soon and having little time to prepare.
Trying to work through issues from Friday through this morning with TV, Internet and phone because Verizon wanted to change hardware. They resolved the phone issue when the tech showed up today quickly on the outside connection.
I’ve been so busy and tired that I’ve slacked on my blogging and photography. I’ll have to work harder to get back into the swing again.
Random Thoughts of the Day
Today I think about the loss of my mother 14 years ago. Time does not heal all wounds.
Pardons for sale. See 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
I’m glad I didn’t have to teach my kids how to push a car downhill and hop in and pop the clutch to get it started.
I can use pain creatively if it’s in the past. I struggle with it in the present.
Simple life is a lot of fun. I know a lot of people who have a lot more and they don’t seem happier than I am. I’m sure there might be some, but the more I see people have the more their focus is away from what is important in life.
I was going to get busy with the actual housekeeping by vacuuming the basement and maybe purging a few things but instead did some cleanup on the computers.
Verizon is here upgrading the hardware in my home. So I’m using the phone as a hotspot to get some connectivity.

Random Thoughts of the Day
I see it’s National Photo Month. I’m just late to the party. Guess I should get my behind in gear.
Being retired can still be a lot of work.
Someone in Falkenstein Germany has taken a great interest in this blog. I notice because I have so few steady visitors and a few new ones from time to time. So hundreds of views in a day or two stand out.
Lots of people celebrate surviving cancer. That is a fine thing. But being a cancer survivor, I think the real brave ones are the ones that didn’t survived the surgeries and treatments and suffering.
Trump and his cronies are idiots and incompitent F**Ks. Just my opinion. While I still have a right to it.
The holiday weekend is upon us. Some may have already started early. In retirement, every day is a holiday. I’m getting things cranked up to enjoy a long weekend with all my working family and friends I have that will need the long break.

We began strong Thursday night with a 4 hour Happy Hour at one of my best friends home. The rain will clear out the next 4 days before the next monsoon season moves in. So, I just put the hammock outside, took the cover off the car. Now to figure out what to grill out the next few nights.
If I’m lucky I’ll knock out a majority of chores today and have the weekend to relax and enjoy.
Random Thoughts of the Day
It better start feeling like summer soon. It’s not like I want my winter attitude issues creeping into May
I have to make June meaningful.
That is NOT – one big beautiful bill. It’s a big piece of crap.
I love my home and yard. But its a strange neighborhood.
Do you have any collections? – An interesting question from the daily writing prompt.
If you asked my better half if I had any collections, she would probably say yes – junk.
Over time I’ve had a few collections, most of them are gone now. Like most young boys of my generation, we used to collect baseball cards. I had a nice one. But those are gone now except for a few that I’ll pass down one day.
I still have a collection of old cameras from the family and my history with photography. I have my collection of art, mostly photography.
Oh, I still have several record albums from my youth. And a few beer steins and goblets.
I have a collection of 4 shells I picked up at the beach over 3 decades ago. It was an especially difficult time personally and professionally. I remember finding them and holding onto them thinking this is us. From the day we came home from the shore they have been on my desk in front of me since then. They give me strength because they represent my family.
I almost forgot about this one, I haven’t touched it in decades. I have a stamp collection from my youth that I built on from what my mom and dad started. That I still have and one day will organize.
My most important collection is my memories and the personal things my children have given me over the years.

Looks can be deceiving. Is this flowing downhill towards me or downhill away from me. For a minute I had to remember where I shot this. The water is actually flowing towards me.

Kind of wondering which way this day will go in terms of direction. I’ve got a blood draw, but otherwise pretty much a free day. I’ll have to come up with a few photo assignments for myself.
First light. Sometimes this low light displays a deeper color. Like watching a sunrise before it breaks the horizon. Sometimes those are the most wonderful colors.
They look softer in this light. Photo by Mike Hartley
And then there is the full sun. I hope to soak up some rays today because the sun will pull a disappearing act for the next few days I’m told.

Random Thoughts of the Morning
Temps in the 40s in late May in unacceptable. It’s ruining my morning vibe.
Utilize the tools you have and build more tools.
I feel I’m the only one not in a hurry some days.
Had our first solicitor come to the door since I put up the No Soliciting sign. Good thing I was asleep because I would have asked why I would buy something from someone who can’t READ and point to the sign. The ironic thing is that the same guy saw me outside later in the morning and I saw him coming into the driveway and I said, “no thank you” and he turned around, not knowing my better half already told him no already. Good thing I didn’t know that or politeness would have been left behind. Because at that point he can’t read or hear so he’s cruisin for a bruisin on that little hoverboard he was riding.
Cleaned off the ride and went for a short cruise. Lots of people beat me to the end of Henryton Road so I just snapped a shot or two exiting and then driving around the west side of Ellicott City.

I never thought of myself as what some photogs call ambulance chasers. But when I come upon a scene, I’ll get a shot if I can. This was along Route 40 westbound before Turf Valley. As sergeant Shultz would say “I know nothing” other than what I captured. A wrecked SUV on a flatbed, a school bus and lots of officers.
I hope they didn’t hit the school bus. Photo by Mike Hartley
As usual I waited too long to get out and before I knew it the song on the stereo was reminding me of what I needed to do – Get Back – home.
I was an early bird this morning. Rising well before dawn which was fine with me. I like getting an early start. But 3:15am was a bit extreme. Maybe a nap in the hammock I just put out this afternoon.
We have lots of Robins, an many more birds. Photo by Mike Hartley
The car is the first project this morning. Another coat of pollen to be removed. I hope to take it for a cruise today. Some back roads but also to the local ice cream shop for a treat.
I should do oil and filter changes on the mowers. I should do a lot of other things on the to do list, but I spent most of the weekend doing that so maybe a little fun today.
I’m feeling inspired, maybe I’ll sit at the easel for a bit and see what my mind can draw.
Random Thoughts of the Day
When you retire, Monday isn’t such a bad day after all.
I hope there is more sun than clouds today.
The number of people not being able to stay in their lane on the highways is staggering.
I think it’s a good day to take a break from the news.
This summer I’ll be working on my automotive photography in addition to the nature, street and whatever else it is I can capture. I’ve always had a passion for cars. Mostly driving them but appreciating their beauty has also been satisfying.

Instead of the normal whole car shots I want to learn to capture the special design, color, modification and angle that defines a feeling.
Some of the colors available now are unique. Photo by Mike Hartley
I used to look at car magazines when I was younger quite a bit. But I’ll be dammed if I remember the special photo aspects that made shots great. So, I’ll have to keep practicing but look for others work and see how they are covering the same event. And how I can differentiate mine and keep it special.

I’d certainly like to continue to get shots of the Maryland Miata Club meetings and give out prints. They seem to be very appreciated, and I like doing it.
Of course I’ll always be looking for light hearted messages from the motoring community. Warning though, they can be opinionated. Photo by Mike Hartley
Luckily for you guys the next few weekends won’t have time to hit any shows but June should be an active month.
Workout
Some go to the gym. I go out the door, open the shed and there is my gym equipment. I spent longer than I would like working outside yesterday. But that was then, there is more work to be done today. Today was leg day. Translation, mowing the lower back HILL.
This week we go back to working on arms when we get the pressure washer out.
But first, I’m going to fire up the grill and have a nice dinner.
How do you balance work and home life? – A very deep question from the daily writing prompt. I thought Sunday was a day of rest. Talking about work doesn’t seem right.
I’ve never got a grip on work and home life balance. Most of the time work won out. Which means I cut sleep or fun or sometimes family short. I tried my best, but I know work won out sometimes when it shouldn’t have.
But you do what you got to do at times to maintain, move ahead, take advantage of an opportunity, go for a goal.
I stayed involved in kids activities. And help out at home, but I should have done more.
It’s a difficult thing to master. It’s like marriage, it’s never 50/50 all the time. It’s best if you talk about this as careers change over time.
Observations – It seems the most challenging time in people’s careers also comes at the same time as they are starting a family. And that balance is the most difficult during a person’s 20s, 30s and 40s years of age.
At times in life, you may be forced to draw a line. Some companies or bosses don’t give a damn about a work/life balance and if you have a life that is your problem. Luckily, I didn’t encounter but a few of these for short periods.
Just being recently retired I would say to a younger person, don’t cut life short. Yes, work hard and smart but don’t let work dictate life. It’s a tool to help you along in life.
My schedule is easing up a bit this coming week. Or at least I think it is, but life happens. Right now, there are only 2 appointments scheduled but I have to make a few more for estimates on some home repairs.
I hope to get outside more if this rainy weather clears out. I’m taking the cover off the car and giving it a bath because Sunday and Monday are supposed to be nice, and I’ll want to get out with the top down for some therapy sessions.
I haven’t spent a day on the water fishing in a while. And I’ve never fished here at Lake Habeeb. Reports of good largemouth bass. Photo by Mike Hartley
Part of this Saturday will be filled with yard chores. But I do hope to get out later and collect some new images to share.
Ah, there is it, I can see sunlight through the windows finally. So let me get away from this device and get this body moving.
Random Thoughts of the Day
It’s been feeling like the Amazon Rain Forest around here.
I’m working on a new and improved version of me each day. Well, most days.
I love getting older. I’m not so in love with the side effects.
Scheduling medical stuff is sometimes more painful than the appointment.
I have two errands to run this weekend. The Snowball Stand and Bruster’s Ice Cream stand.
What sacrifices have you made in life? – An interesting question from the daily writing prompt.
Some might consider things we have done as sacrifices, but most of them were life choices that included sacrifices to meet a goal. Most of it comes down to time and giving.
We lived off one salary for a good while to have one of us home with the children when they were young.
We saved, so our kids could do something we didn’t do, get a college degree.
I’ve driven a used car most of my life. Some without A/C. And one without heat. Then there was the year I rode a motorcycle year round, because I didn’t have a car.
Packed lunch most years instead of going out.
Worked my ass off and missed a lot of fun and sleep.

Lots of life is appreciating all you’ve been given, not what you don’t have. And those sacrifices above all were worth it. And I guess that doesn’t make them sacrifices.
Giving a kidney, going into a war zone to fight for country, donating your time and effort to a charitable cause. Those are sacrifices. I don’t have a full set of kidneys, I’m a bit old to fight unless Trump or Putin want a piece of me, so I guess I better get busy helping others.
