Fun Lunch

We stopped at Leelynn’s for lunch yesterday. The spot of the former Allview Inn. Leelynn’s has never disappointed and it didn’t yesterday. We each had some cream of crab soup, and I had the mahi mahi tacos which were great. My better half enjoyed the seasonal salad.

And I think this is a first for us there, we got a desert. We don’t usually do this but I saw this Brownie Sandwich on the menu, and I had no idea what possessed me to order it, but we split it and finished it. Two warmed brownies, ice cream, whipped cream and some strawberries and chocolate fudge.

No, I’m not sorry I ordered it. Photo by Mike Hartley

I could have never eaten that whole thing by myself. We skipped dinner Saturday night.

Lots on the agenda today so we had better get a good breakfast this morning. I hope you all are off to a good start this last Sunday in October.

Many leaves to be blown today.

Gatekeeper

Working on being a better gatekeeper of my time and realizing how important that is. The better I am at it, the happier I seem to be. I allow myself to get sidetracked too often, but I’m working hard on being a finisher.

I was proud of myself when I saw my screen time on the phone to 1 hour a day last week. That is my goal to stay under that each day. And I’d like to get it down to 30 minutes a day max in the future.

Making my gate stronger than this one. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m reducing my TV time and spending some time on the treadmill while watching.

Focusing and concentrating on important things is the key, even when you get tired or distracted. Returning to the mission, not getting discouraged and finishing what is started.

So let the good things pass the gate, proceed past the small pond and continue the path along the wood line. Success is out there someplace.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Yesterday was very relaxing.
  • Weather forecasters are really good about telling you what it’s going to do in the next hour. See you can find something nice to say about someone if you try.
  • A good day is when you speak to all your grown children.
  • I wonder if a movement to support a federal worker is needed. The people that are responsible for managing them certainly are failing.
  • I didn’t do much shooting yesterday, but I did a ton of editing and uploading. I need to reverse that today and take advantage of the color outside.

You got to love them

This little girl was with us for 8 days. We watched her for our son while his family was away visiting his wife’s mother and grandmother out of state.

She is a joy and a pain. Her sister was just a joy and ease. She’s a very active dog and wants constant attention and love. At least she saw this as an opportunity for that. Maybe she’s smarter than I give her credit for.

She’s a loving pet and loves us and our house. More room to run and play, lots of wildlife to watch and bark at. Long walks with my better half, full roam of the house and the occasional treat. Well maybe more than occasional.

I love dogs but I don’t believe I’ll ever own one. I get to love both of my best friend’s dogs, and my son’s dog.

And now that she hasn’t been here for 2 days, I miss her and almost find myself looking for her to come down and nudge my hand away from the keyboard.

Pets are a wonderful thing. So much love in animals. I don’t understand how people can mistreat them. That reminds me I need to visit the local cat and dog rescue and make a donation. Don’t worry, I know there are people in need and donated to the Maryland Food Bank today.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • If you don’t participate, you’re advocating your freedom.
  • Yesterday was a good walking day. Now, if I can follow up with another one.
  • Searching for the truth takes time and effort.
  • I’m getting better in dealing with cold, but wind makes me mad.
  • It’s getting hard to move around my office again. Time for the purge.

Men and BBQ’s

In a post about food, I talked about grilling and that being one of my favorite ways to cook when a loyal follower Sheree asked, “What is it about men and BBQ’s?” That is a damn good observation and question.

I didn’t grow up in a family that grilled out. Mostly a picnic or end of year cookout from various sports leagues I played on usually at the coach’s home. So, they were few and far between. Dad passed when I was young and Mom didn’t BBQ.

It wasn’t till just after high school that one of my best friends would grill some New York strip steaks, out back in his grandmother’s home where he was staying to go to school and work in the town of College Park.

Soon we all had our own Webber grills and were all active outside chefs. We, being my two best friends and myself. They are very good at it and I’m no slouch. I’ve never used gas, always charcoal. Most of the time that has been the standard with all of us. Of course, some wood for smoking when needed. One had a pellet smoker for a while.

The Weber is an all season appliance. Photo by Mike Hartley

So why does it seem to be a male dominated activity. I have no frigg’in idea. But it always has been for me and most men I know. Yes, I watch some of the BBQ cooking contest and there are women competing in those but in the circles, I’ve run in I have yet to meet a woman who’s the griller of the home.

BBQs involve fire and men like lighting and maintaining a fire. Maybe some primal calling, I don’t know but getting a fire going in a pit, fireplace or grill is fun.

I love winter grilling. Photo by Mike Hartley

Grilling involves tongs, and those are fun to play with and click while cooking. Or to chase your better half with before taking the food outside to cook. He who holds the tongs, holds the power.

It’s OUR kitchen outside. Lots of room, if we spill something the dog or ants get it. Other guys to talk to. Usually there is beer, frowned upon by females while cooking but a staple of grilling activity. Ladies are welcome to the grill area if smiling, complimenting the smell and can’t wait to eat. Anything else will be met with side eye or peering over glasses.

Men like to watch meat and fish cook and not in the oven or microwave. On a metal grate and open fire with flames occasionally touching it.

Muscles, Clams, Mahi Mahi, Cod, Rockfish, Shrimp, Lobster, Scallops. All great grilled. Photo by MH

There is a spirited discussion on who is the better grill chef between the men with all kinds of offensive language. Offering critique, advice, and criticism while grilling is a direct afront to the grill master and could lead to blows depending on the number of drinks before the grilling started. Most ladies I know don’t include fights (play or real) as part of cooking.

Most of the time the good-natured back about who is better grill chef goes on till the grilling is complete, where most ladies won’t say a bad thing about each other’s cooking in front of each other. Men on the other had will remember every fail you ever had on the grill and tease you about it while you’re cooking so the laughter will continue.

Coals getting ready. Photo by Mike Hartley

Grilling involves getting smoke in your face and having your cloths smell like smoke sometimes. Again, not popular with most of the females I know.

Most guys will stand outside in any weather. I’ve fired up the grill when it’s been over 100 outside in the shade. I’ve fired it up in the snow. Men are nuts.

Good grillers will use marinade and various seasonings which is like a discussion of the finest wines when men stand around the grill. Even taking a trip to each other’s spice cabinets to see what is stocked.

Nice steaks from the old Laurel Meat Market. Photo by Mike Hartley

We have rules in our kitchen (grill area). No kids running around. Only accredited grill master’s within the cooking zone.

Women may know the best meats from the food market. Men know where every butcher shop is within a 100-mile radius and probably have sampled every one and again will argue which is the best.

Most of our sons will have a natural interest in it which excites the hell out of us.

We finally get to share that pride women have when completing a home cooked meal that everyone will like.

I’m guessing this is the final reason. Most women can beat a man, hands down in the kitchen and cooking overall in most cases. I know my better half can. But on the grill, I’m the master. Not that she couldn’t do it. She probably lets me do it to feel good and not have to cook one of the few nights of the month.

So, either a lot of women have advocated that territory to men or they secretly are playing us to get us to help cook occasionally.

A tip of the chef’s hat to the ladies that like to grill. All are welcome, warning the grill area can get racy at times.

Getting in the swing again

Trying to approach the day with a better mindset and it’s working. Now I must keep stringing days of photography together, regardless of the weather outside. And I better get used to it because the cooler than normal weather that has been upon us looks like it will continue.

As one of my friends says, “dress for it.” I won’t be looking for a swing with the sunrise this morning and the temps are still in the 30s but maybe this weekend when it gets near 60.

Looking at this reminded me of my youth. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s been some time since I’ve sat in a swing. This is the type of swing we used to have. Sometimes a single rope with a round disk with the hole in the middle for the rope. I paused for a few minutes looking at this one in a yard in Granite MD.

Nothing like a swing on a hot summer day where you create your own breeze going back and forth with little effort. My Uncle Bob had one at his home and I’d always be out on that when visiting.

You know, I could easily put one out in front of my house, and I think I might run that by the boss. The grandkids might like it. Or at least that can be the pretext for putting one up.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Music is inspiring me this morning.
  • At what point will the majority come together and say enough is enough?
  • Yesterday was going so well. And like life, it changed.
  • I’ve got more power washing to do on a large fence. I hope the wind isn’t blowing again. It’s too chilly for a shower.
  • Don’t forget, you’re responsible for your own happiness.

Fresh Doors

I promised myself I wasn’t going to dig into the archive, so I went out and shot a few local doors. And I’m back on schedule for the Thursday Doors event after a few weeks’ hiatus. Hope this has been a good week for everyone.

As always, thanks to the creator of ThursdayDoors and please follow the link to Dan’s site No Facilities for far more talented posts.

I went to the down the road to a town called Granite. Just took a few shots but there is much more there.

The plaque to the left on this door above says “This Property has been placed on The National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the United States of the Interior. I couldn’t decide which shot I liked best.

Ah the good old Woodstock in. I parked there to walk some local trails and get a few nature shots.

This is the first home as you enter Granite from Woodstock.

I’ll have to start exploring this neighborhood more. Lots of beautiful homes.

The gate and steps have seen better days.

Now that’s a garage.

Persistence

I’ve been persistent with this blogging for over a decade now. Still cranking out posts with some frequency with a vague purpose most days. Some chronicling events and plans of the day. Some thoughts of the day. Some pictures of the day.

Let’s go racing. Photo by Mike Hartley

Occasional commentary on life, politics, sports, kids, grandkids, education, cars, nature and whatever strikes me each day. A lot of feelings and observations from my perspective and experiences. Some of my career points, experiences with friends.

But for what purpose. Yes, I’m still true to my original thought of sharing my photography through my blog which I do by using all my own images. I do it because I thought it would help me grow in that area. And I need to make images more a focus.

The writing part is something that just came upon me as an interest. I know I still have work to do in this area but again the practice may lead to something good eventually. I think I’ll do less writing here and more on my book ideas though.

Automotive design used to be a stunning thing. Photo by Mike Hartley

Doing this blog sometimes while working was difficult. Free time and pressures of the job certainly impacted creativity and productivity.

Now it’s something I look forward to each morning to get me thinking and doing. And as time allows a few more posts here and there.

Okay, time to leave this chair and go out and catch some fall colors I’ll share tonight. I’m sure nature can give the paint shades of red above a go for the money.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I listened to Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon this morning. Money is a great track, but Time might be my favorite from that album.
  • Life would be difficult without glasses.
  • Not allowing military leaders to speak to Congress is dangerous. And the takeover continues.
  • Using my mind against pain.

Misfire

Yesterday, there was a misfire. Somewhat productive but lots of downtime. More than I planned, so I can’t say the week is off to a flying start.

Today I hope to be doing a lot better and getting off my behind.

But you know what they say about the best laid plans, don’t you. That’s one reason I rise early in the mornings. I can get some things accomplished and relax a bit before the day is put in gear for others.

We picked a new spot for dinner this week and I’m calling for reservations later today. That’s a fun thing to start the week with and gives some anticipation to the coming days.

One thing I don’t really want to do but needs doing is some power washing of the fence. Thankfully it will be warmer today.

The attic is now cleaned out. That was a project, but another one to check off the list.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Seems like we are living in a world of two separate realities.
  • The Oval office holder says I’m not representative of our country and I’m whacked out. Come see me about my personal message to you if you got the balls.
  • I didn’t know my Ring service was linked to Amazon Web Services systems till they went down this morning. Something else I just added to my list to change in the future.
  • If the No Kings rally was a hate America rally, what was January 6th?
  • My AI plan is to avoid it.
  • Pardoning George Santos boggles my mind, like so many other things being done.

Split Window Saturday

Even though this is beautiful I still prefer the convertible. This split window was at the Endless Summer Show in Ocean City MD.

I keep trying to talk my friend into taking his Vette to OC. Photo by Mike Hartley

This one below was also in Ocean City but during one of our summer vacations.

The dog’s name is probably Blue. Photo by Mike Hartley

They are some beautiful rides. But I would need a secure storage facility or a garage like a bunker to store them. Having a Miata is a lot simpler and I have a lot of fun with it so I’m happy and worry free.

Today and tomorrow may be some of the last good convertible weather so get out there.

Knock Knock

What’s something most people don’t know about you? – Let’s see, I don’t want to give the same answer to this question that I did last year in a post titled Night Sky so I’ll reveal something else.

The number of concussions I’ve had in my life. And yes, it scares me. Luckily things are still connecting the dots between the ears.

Being its baseball season I remember picking up one there. I was playing catcher and a State Trooper on the other team decided to do his Pete Rose imitation and rolled me over like a bowling pin and knocked me out.

That one I recovered from in week or so, I was young. The worst one from an accident took almost a year to even start feeling somewhat normal and I actually think that one had some lingering lifelong effects on my balance. I believe I can recall 6 in total.

Maybe I should leave the noggin to science.

Luxury

I’m not much into the luxurious lifestyle. The first requisite is money and that has never been in vast supply here. I do have an eye for beauty and sometimes those observations are luxurious. In the car world Cadillac is a luxury brand.

I drove an old Caddy once. It was my moms, who owned an old used one. She didn’t feel safe in a small car. This one below is not it.

In some ways I have a lot of luxuries. A full stomach, a roof over our heads, money to pay the bills most of our lives. And the greatest ones, time and health.

I guess I just got a luxury item. I got a firepit a few weeks ago. Not something I need. Not something that serves a purpose other than comfort on a cool evening. I worked hard all my life. I’ll make some allowances.

Luxury has its place in life. But greed doesn’t. And we have a lot of greed at work acquiring the very few things they don’t own already.

Random Thoughts of the Day

Success

When you think of the word “successful,” who’s the first person that comes to mind and why? The answer to this question last year was in a post titled “The Captain“

That was about someone I don’t know personally. So, this year I thought I’d pick a person I know that is successful and why.

I know people that have been successful financially. Also, some that have been successful professionally. Some have found success in personal relationships. I know very few that have been successful at all three.

So, I guess I don’t know anyone who has been completely successful. I guess my definition of it would be, have you touched enough people to help them be successful in various facets in life and do you have the wonderful memories in your own life at the end to reflect on for you to leave this world with a smile on your face.

Fighting through

The last couple days I’ve started strong but ran out of energy. That old ability to light the candle at both ends and keep it burning long, seems to be fading. Yes, it still works some days, but more often than not, when I give the day a good effort for 8-10 hours, I’m getting spent.

I wouldn’t blink at working 12-18 hours in a day for decades. I wouldn’t even guess the number of 24-hour days I put in and some 36-hour ones here and there. I believe there was one 60-hour day when the press broke down, and then the inserter.

Hey, I’ll take 8-10 hours. Any day I can be productive and get an opportunity to create something, its a good day.

Partial success on one of my photo projects yesterday. Over 140 images edited and uploaded to the gallery of the 100 that were there. The end is in sight for collection of all the images of a very important subject. One that has been a joy and sorrow at the same time.

The collection of shots from my son’s first pet, one that was very loved and is missed. Step one is almost complete, going back 12 years. That’s one of my goals to finish this week. 80% done.

The next goal is to edit the 400 remaining shots from the first pass through of the Endless Summer Car Show and upload the best of those to the photo site and add a few links to share them.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m not intimidated by bullies.
  • Hopefully the next to last lawn cutting of the season.
  • I work with pastels, and I got some charcoals and a pad recently. Which reminded me I haven’t tried black and white photography in a while.
  • I became a better listener recently.
  • It’s grandchildren and grand-dog week.

An interesting street

What makes a good neighbor? – Asks the daily writing prompt again. I wrote a piece last year called Neighbor that covers it pretty well.

So, I’ll talk about a few other observations. We have a longtime neighbor down the street moving away later this year. Our children all grew up together. He more than helped me build my deck. We used to go to dinner or cookouts here and there.

They are the second longtime neighbor that our families had a long connection with that moved this year. Change is the only constant in life. When we first moved here, there was nothing but woods behind us for decades. Then another home was added to the court behind us. While we have a wooded view in the summer, but as the trees shed the corner of a home appears to the right.

We have two properties that are in danger of collapse. At the same time, homes near a million $. One nice property was purchased about 2 years ago and hasn’t been lived in since. Very strange, seeing someone in and out every month or two, for a few hours, but otherwise unoccupied.

I hear we have a State Policeman in the neighborhood, but we haven’t met. Large family but almost never seen. We have a couple of elderly OGs still. But transition will be coming to those homes also. There are several of us who are entering our senior years and a mix of young newcomers, most of which I don’t know well yet.

I get along well with the longtime neighbors to one side and across the street. The neighbor on the other side is a struggle at best. They still own the home but moved elsewhere I believe and I’m guessing now they have other family living there. I believe they also rent rooms out. They don’t take care of the property and in the past built on my property to where I had to pay for a survey and get their shed, animal pen and garden off my land. They almost burnt their place down twice with open burns and got sited by the county.

A longtime neighbor (who was also my dentist) just retired so I might look him up more. I’ll probably make more of an effort to get to know my new neighbors.

One of them down the street I think I might meet before some others. They are car enthusiasts. I’m also a car enthusiast, but I don’t tear up and down my street. I’ve done some eyeballing when they came rolling down a few times and that seems to have solved it for now with the exception when they had a meet at their house and they all rolled out for a cruise and more than a few got squirrely on the way out.

It’s an interesting and ever-changing neighborhood. At one time we were the young childless couple in the hood. Then a family and now one of the neighborhood OGs.

As we exit our neighborhood street, this house sits across the street looking left on Woodstock Road. Photo by Mike Hartley

Progress is fun

I’m trying to look at what I accomplish more. It helps balance what I see in front of me and keeps me going. Taking a few seconds of pride or just appreciating that chapter of the journey is okay. Satisfaction should come along the way and not just at the completion of a project.

The other day I was learning how some new bits for the Dremel tool and was just pleased with some of the test cuts I made. And it gave me an idea of how to use two of them on creating hair texture.

I saw many wonderful, completed marvels at the car show. The people that were really excited were those in mid project. Like the guy at our hotel whose car was just primer grey, and he added yet to be replaced, dry rotted window seals. And yes, he was heading home with it on the trailer before the rain.

But I heard and saw his car run and he’s got the mechanical part down pat. Him and others I ran into that were talking about their builds clearly the best excitement besides driving the finished project was the doing it.

Or the father/son I met on the boardwalk discussing their Ford and Chevy projects. The smiles and grins said it all. And then when something similar road by the eyes would widen.

Speaking of doing it, I’ve got to get back to several things if I’m going to make the best use of this day. And get my own grin and smile working.

Have a good morning all.

Salute

My apologies to the bloggers I follow and to the ones I haven’t discovered. The last month or so I’ve been slack on interacting with the community and I’m going to resolve that starting now by carving out some time each day.

Yes, there might be a day here and there that I might be traveling or it’s a beautiful day outside and I only get to a few regulars, but I will be more active in consuming and responding to the wonderful work you all produce.

Not only does it enlighten me, but it also inspires me further in my own work. The wonderful words and images, the hobbies and knowledge, the perspectives and thoughts I’ve encountered here. Views of the world I probably won’t get to personally but appreciate but have through other eyes.

But I’m back to viewing the many wonders of fellow bloggers. My motor is running again.

I’ll be purring along like this monster. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Just once, I’d like to hear a doctor say, “see you next year.” Besides my optometrist.
  • I saw a dozen examples of colors I’d love to have my car painted this past weekend. That is going to be a project when the time comes.
  • Some knowledge I’d rather not have.
  • If someone hits me and says it wasn’t me, it was my hands-free driving vehicle. I might hit them and say it wasn’t me, it was my hands-free body.

Principles

What principles define how you live? – My answer to this question from the daily writing prompt in last year’s post called Simple Ones, was pretty complete and still holds true today.

But my nature says that I’ve lived another year so I must have learned something to add to that list.

  • Work on changing myself, instead of others.
  • There is time to take a stand. Be aware of that time.
  • Seeking truth is very important. That was true in the 1960s as it is today.
  • Always work on improving your common sense.
  • Say what is on your mind now before it’s too late.
  • Give your grandchildren memories that they will hold dear, long after you are gone.
  • Say “I love you” to those you love often as possible.
  • Appreciate each season. You never know if you won’t see one again.

Shows over

What a great time in Ocean City the last few days. It was the Endless Summer Car Show, and it was the largest attendance I’ve seen in a while. Even with the foul weather coming up the coast and Sundays awards and activities moved to Saturday, it was a winner of a week.

My better half and I went down in the Miata to Muscle Car Heaven. Bike week can be loud, but those twins can’t complete V8s with little or no exhaust restrictions. It was music to my ears. The smell of high-octane fuel being burned and the smiles and acknowledgements of many wonderful works of automotive art.

I think the range of years I saw was from 1930 to present day. From classic VWs to Pro Steet Rods with cams so radical it sounds like it’s going to stall any moment. The number of classic trucks seems to be on the increase also. Caddy’s and Corvettes, Coupes and Customs, Camaros and Caminos, Pony cars and Pick Up trucks, Judges and Jeeps, and anything on 4 wheels, side by side up and down Coastal Highway.

The longest Boardwalk Parade I’ve seen by far was on Friday morning. It went on for two and half hours. Met a father and son from PA and we guessed years and models against one another for a while and had many laughs and stories to share.

Even though it was dry Thursday and Friday, it was very overcast a majority of those two days. Woke to some scattered short showers on Saturday morning but the sun was trying to make a short peek before that, Nor Easter comes up the coast. When I left, I heard 2-4 inches of rain and 50-60 mph winds for Sunday. I think it’s been downgraded a bit now.

I was just looking at a few webcams from OC between 4-5am and they are bouncing around so the wind must be whipping. And that was verified because I just looked at the cam for the inlet parking lot which is vacant except for the sands blowing across it looking like ghosts flying over it. Kind of ere. And now after 5 am the rain has started.

Anyway, it was a great time and one I’ll make a pilgrimage for again.

Fuel

I’ve been sucking fumes of burned high octane fuel. I was in the land of motorheads and loved it. Car shows are a lot of fun for me. The sounds, the colors, the technical details of these machines are something to behold.

Tools of the Trade

Learning by doing. I’m trying to learn, test and practice with the multitude of settings on today’s cameras.

I’ve replaced the small point/shoot Kodak 812 that I believe I got in 2007 and I purchased the Nikon Coolpix P950 from B&H Photo earlier this year. I still keep the old Kodak in the bag in case I need to go out in bad weather or a dangerous spot.

A tool I plan on using a lot more this year is my tripods. My body’s frame isn’t as stable as I’d like. Especially with that heavy Nikon 7100 and zoom. It’s not the fastest lens anyway and my thoughts are that it’s going to make me think more about position/angle. Something I should do more of, and that is to take time to think about the composition.

I also have a monopod that I’m starting to use more frequently.

So my work is cut out for me. New knowledge, new practices, new day, new fun.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I know there is a salad fork, but if you get the full size salad instead of the side salad do you use the larger fork?
  • One of my best friends was talking about all the trips he has planned for next year. Got me thinking I had better start planning.
  • If you think about your parents long after they are gone they did a good job.
  • I’m going to try to top my shooting record this week. (photography shooting)

Mid week wishes

The more I do, the better I feel. And Wednesday was one of those days. In some ways very productive, and others very relaxing. What a combination. I hope it continues into this fine Thursday.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my children today and their careers. That it’s only the middle of their workweek and how tired they probably are. I remember my 30s and 40s and the pressures of work and family. I hope all you working stiffs can hold on just a little longer, for the weekend is near.

I guess this is the last rose I’ll be seeing till the springtime.

My summer started late start and ended early. So, I’m expecting a very mild winter to balance things out or I’m going to be rather cranky when it doesn’t.

This weekend it’s time to get a few pumpkins and I’ll head up to our local spot and pick up a few and get a snowball while I’m looking them over.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Smiling, not so easy all the time but keep trying.
  • Well, my baseball season came to an end this evening.
  • I see Nobel Peace Prize being awarded on Friday. Please don’t tell me the world is completely upside down. I’m not sure I could handle the news if it’s the person who begs for one, wins.
  • Feeling relaxed this morning.

Short walk

My better half had a doctor’s appointment that was going to be an hour or two, so I took a short walk at Lake Elkhorn before grabbing some lunch.

It was a bit overcast, and I forgot to take my monopod with me.

The place was packed with walkers, joggers and bikers. Also, some 4-legged friends were along for the stroll.

The fall colors are just starting here.

The pond below the dam is a spot a Blue Herron likes. I didn’t see them today.

As I walked back to the dock in the first shot something in the water caught my eye from a distance.

Once he saw me, he made a turn right towards me.

Maybe just curious but I was amazed at how close he came to the dock.

About 5 feet before the dock it dove, and I didn’t see him/her again.

I’ve got to work on my wildlife photos. I have to take my tripod out more.

Got OUTside

Another nice day out. Hoist those sails, put the wind to your back and let it rip. We had a few logistical things to knock out early today but this afternoon presented some opportunities to make the best of the fading warm weather.

Get sailing today. Photo by Mike Hartley

I spent a few minutes taking some pictures around Lake Elkhorn in Columbia while my better half was at a doctor’s appointment. I’ll process them tonight.

Did some storm prep. Got kind of windy out and I noticed the leaves that were on my roof had piled up on the gutters and deck. I have guards on but those were big piles. I have two huge oaks out front, and they are only half done if that and cover things several times.

I have a long pool pole that I kept when I closed the pool and a brush on the end so I can clean the gutters in the front without a ladder.

Gates closed, grills and firepit covered, cushions and hammock stored away, patio umbrellas closed, cover on the car and kindling wood covered.

And there we go, daylight fading but not my spirits. I feel a late-night effort beginning.

Just great

I see right down the road from us there has been a large sewage spill from a local pumping station. No communication from the county so I just wrote to the county executive and said we are less than a mile away from this area but we are all on wells and our own septic this side of the road.

I’m awaiting his reply, but I can’t see how 245,000 gallons of sewage isn’t going to make its way into the groundwater supply. If they won’t provide testing, I’ll get my own done. And if they have funked up our fresh water, I’m going to make sure this county is a bit poorer in the near future.

Luckily WBAL had a piece on their website from the Maryland Department of the Environment with facts of the event. I’m contacting the Public Works department also but I’m guessing they are all in ass covering mode by now.

It’s funny, they say signs around the stormwater pond have been posted. I’ve driven by it a half dozen times since and haven’t seen one, I guess they are down by the water. I’ll have to go find one later.

The county exec seems to have no problem doing a lot of publicity shots of events and people in the county. How about communicating to people in the area affected by an environmental issue affecting county residents?

I don’t see a health alert issued by the county as I’ve seen in some previous spills. I also wrote to the public works department, and I’ll post if they or the executive replies. As far as I’m concerned, the county has dropped the ball on this one.

I saw a health alert for a spill in Columbia earlier this year in May. Why none for this one? I’ve contacted the health department for the county about having my well tested. I’ll also get an independent one done to verify.

Below is the pond that is now off limits they say.

A past beautiful morning in Howard County. But it’s not this one. I’m sure the wildlife isn’t in there, but if they are they will regret it. Photo by Mike Hartley

Monday Thoughts

Vertically challenged

I’m neither short nor tall. I guess average for my generation. I’ve always thought it is good to be very comfortable with what you have been blessed with.

This dog may need some counseling.

Missed Her

Saturday my better half was out all day with family. I missed her and always have when she isn’t with me. But I have the pleasure again of her company all day today.

How much is Enough

I’ve always considered myself one not in need of a lot of material things. Especially expensive, status and luxury items. Oh, I like them, I ogle over them at car shows or a boat show, but I’m not a buyer.

Now would I be if I had more? Would I be drawn into the same trap that money can make me happier? I hope not, and not at this age I believe. Possibly when I was much younger and didn’t have some basic wisdom.

Drivers

I’m out for less than 5 minutes on a Sunday morning and a BMW 840 passes a car on the exit lane on Rt 99 and the car he passed was going over the speed limit. All just a couple hundred feet before the elementary school. Luckily, he didn’t do that on a weekday when parents were out to witness it.

Some parents might have taken upon themselves to FUBAR the driver.

Everything has been more out of whack on the highways since Covid. The empty roads were speedways when nobody went out much. Now they are full again and we have people that can’t adjust. Or that they are so self-entitled that they will hurt someone without a second thought.

I was out for a total of about 20 minutes on the road and saw another driver run a red light and got cut off badly by another driver trying to get to HIS turn lane.

Here’s hoping for a smoother drive this afternoon.

Department of War

I see Trump has told military leaders to handle the enemy within. I guess that is me. He declared the company I worked for decades for “the enemy of the people” in his first term. I’m a registered democrat and he defines that blocks as radical left lunatics. I’ve always thought I was rather middle of the road.

I’ve never had any thought ever about raising arms against my own military but jeez, if you’re going to send them, I guess I have no choice. My father and two uncles are probably rolling over in their graves thinking they defeated the one and only Hitler.

A lot of military leaders, troops and even local police have some very important decisions to make soon it appears. I’m right here. Same address I’ve been in for decades. Thanks for the warning of war against your own citizens you took an oath to protect and serve. Much appreciated.

It’s been a blast

Winding down on a Sunday evening enjoying the firepit and a wonderful meal from my better half trying a new recipe. She always has fixed a good Sunday meal.

Fire. Photo by Mike Hartley

It must have been a good weekend because it flew by. I didn’t have as much fun as I had hoped for, but it was still a good weekend for accomplishments.

I’m looking forward to a great Monday. A Miata club meeting and vaccinations are the only things scheduled. And I can’t go to the meeting with a dirty car, so I’ll give it a bath.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My firepit is intoxicating.
  • I don’t like resorting to help with pain, but I was weak today.
  • Normalizing bat shit crazy is not normal.
  • There are people who are just poor at communicating. I didn’t say I wasn’t one of them.

Working hard

I believe the saying goes “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it” if memory serves me correctly. It’s not a bad guideline to follow at times. Unless you intend to cross a drawbridge, then timing is important.

Got some cardio pushing a mower, raking and moving some wood. I have no problem keeping active in the summer, spring and fall. It’s winter that kills me. I’m like a bear and I’m inclined to hibernate.

Today washing the cars and some power washing are on the agenda. Might visit a local landscape show.

Unless we get lucky later in October, today and tomorrow might be one of the last 80-degree days of the year. So, I’m going to be outside enjoying it and soaking up some sun. And then finish the day around the firepit relaxing and hopefully enjoying the Yankee victory from this afternoon.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My first good night’s sleep in weeks.
  • There are few things better in life than hearing your better half say medical test results were good.
  • Woodworking is fulfilling because it’s so easy to see progress.
  • To say I have an issue with the current administration would be the understatement of the year.
  • I think I’ll call my children today.
  • I’m holding down the fort. My best friends are both out of town.

Losing it

I wrote about – What would you do if you lost all your possessions? – last year in a post called Lost in answer to the daily writing prompt.

So today I’ll write about another type of loss. The loss of physical abilities. Age is quickly showing me limitations I’ve never had to deal with before.

Life is about adapting. All through life. As a senior though you get tired of adapting, when suddenly you’re faced with a whole new set of issues.

Life without the energy or limitations that make things that were easy in the past a challenge now. I can see why some older people become more sedentary. The desire to keep fighting through challenges diminishes over time.

I hope I never hit that point but it’s possible. I have to keep working on my mindset to overcome. My sight was the first sense to start to fade. I picked up glasses about 15 years ago. I’ve run into a few other physical issues that affect me periodically but I’m dealing with those successfully. They slow me sometimes, but I focus on other things I can do so I’m not losing time or effort.

Being positive and looking forward are good skills in adapting to the changes your body and mind go through.

I’ve never been one on strength training with weights. Just here and there throughout my life. But as a senior I’m working with dumbbells every day now. I’m stretching every morning and sometimes in the evening.

I’m walking more now than I can remember in a few decades.

I know if I’m fortunate enough to live a lot longer that I’ll lose physical abilities. Maybe even more senses. I just hope I don’t lose the mindset to overcome. And I guess that holds true for possessions also.

Starting line Saturday

And were off. Well, most of us, I think. I’m always an early riser but I’m no longer a working stiff and if you all still punching a clock want to sleep in, go right ahead and sleep till noon. It’s a little chilly here in the Mid-Atlantic this morning anyway.

I’m off to the station for another 5 gallons of gas for the power tools. We will see how long that lasts. There will be some fun squeezed in between the chores. And hopefully some shooting time with the Nikons. I’ve got to get one of those in for service soon.

This guy’s face says it all about the car. Photo by Mike Hartley

And while my bright red convertible won’t challenge this car, it’s still a blast to drive. So here is to some seat time after I give it a bath.

But first, some time behind the push mower and sweating off a pound or two.

Thursday recollections

Time with the grandchildren yesterday was special. The one grandchild I didn’t get a chance to see, I wrote a letter to. I’m so happy to be part of their lives. They are in my mind along with my own children, most of every day.

Patapsco River. Photo by Mike Hartley

Children keep me flowing smoothly in life now. With so much chaos all around us each day the kids keep me grounded and focused on a good future. Or at least hopeful for a good one for them.

Speaking of hope, the baseball season is still alive for me this year. It’s been an up and down year for a lot of teams, even the best ones. But the cream seems to be rising to the top and there is already some outstanding efforts and plays being made. The game moving faster has made a huge difference for my viewing enjoyment.

The Peanuts group turned 75 yesterday. One of my favorite characters and the name of the town I live in.

Random Thoughts on a Friday Morning

  • I’m going to get the firepit going this evening.
  • Good day to turn the TV off.
  • I’m tickled that my grandchildren like when I run up the street beside their car when they leave.
  • Lied in the past, lying to you now, and will lie to you in the future.

Out of place plus 1

The daily writing prompt asks again for me to – Tell us about a time you felt out of place.

I’ll add one thing below, to the list from last year’s post called “ouT oF placE” that is new to me.

When I get together now with friends, most of whom are still working, I don’t have job stories to share like in the past. It’s not that I totally feel out of place, but the dynamic has changed and I’m adapting. I’ve noticed it at other gatherings how work is a focus.

The funny thing is I’m usually up hours before the working stiffs working on my own pursuits. And I’m inspired to do it. But I don’t call it work.

I’m not that inclined to talk about my artistic efforts so I’m doing a lot more listening now at family and friend gatherings.

I’m not a public artist like the fellow below but like him I’m a bit grey and I love it when my granddaughter wants to draw or paint with me.

I just had a great thought. As they get older I think I’ll get each an easel.

Just playing

Life is great when you have time to play. The sun wasn’t up yet, so I thought I’d brighten things up.

Roasting tomatos. Photo by Mike Hartley

Next, I thought I’d better get moving and brush up on some carving skills. So, I got to work there carefully trimming some details into a wood carving of a shell. Also working on a series of dolphins swimming together.

Watch brushing up with this one. Photo by Mike Hartley

Last week I started etching and carving into seashells which I wasn’t aware of needing to take some extra precautions from the dust.

I need to go get a few pumpkins this week and start painting them. One for each of my kid’s families. I’m looking forward to trying a few scary designs I saw.

Tomorrow I’ll start capturing Halloween decorations around the area and share them here being it’s the kickoff to that season.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My smile doesn’t get much bigger than when I get a note from my children. Unless it’s a visit.
  • Some pick up a lot of wisdom with age. But with that, comes more questions.
  • Working in sculpting isn’t as natural for me. But it’s kind of fun.
  • I’m contemplating some plumbing work. Carefully

Waves of Wednesday

A slower start to the day than I wanted but relaxed and ready to go now. Got out just before noon and took a few shots in Old Ellicott City.

I love walking around this town. People are still friendly and relaxed here.

Watching the Patapsco flow effortlessly downstream at the bottom of the town.

I haven’t ventured inside the B&O Museum in a bit.

Helping the street with some color.

Murals to view. Trains traveling past.

And as soon as the furnace service man is finished getting that unit ready for the winter season I’ll be heading back outside for some more images.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • A cooler start to the morning than I’m comfortable with.
  • I would be really interested in what the thoughts of those Generals and Admirals were when Trump and Hegseth were rambling on.
  • It felt good picking up the pastels again yesterday.
  • I wonder if Trumps favorite song is “It’s Good To Be King” by Tom Petty.
  • Learning isn’t always easy. Some lessons are very tough.

Tuesday Takes

What a morning. Kind of inspired and depressed, energized but sore, upbeat and apprehensive. Guess it’s the kind of start we all go through. At least I don’t have to get my ass in gear and report to someone else and deal with that morning rush hour.

I have a best friend toying with retirement. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy what he does. He’s good and successful at it. And he loves a challenges and that job is filled with them. I think he is just tired and like me sees a lot of people our age and younger no longer with us or experiencing life changing issues.

All I have to do this morning is move beyond this back pain and I’ll be right as rain. I wish the sun was out, but I’ll make do.

I’m going to have to spend some more time in the driver’s seat. It’s going to get cool and the top-down days are numbered. The rear wheel drive and manual trans along with tires that are suited for summer tracks, it won’t be seeing many winter excursions.

Maybe that dry day or two in January or February where it might hit the mid-50s, I’ll take the cover off and go for a spin with the top down, the heat on and the seat warmer on high.

I’ll be looking for the sun tomorrow from this position. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • My granddaughter smiled at me yesterday. Gives me power to keep going.
  • Is the military coming to your town or street soon?
  • I’m learning carving and etching requires a steady hand and patience.
  • Looking forward to some grilled steaks this evening.

Tons of details

The daily writing prompt asks – What details of your life could you pay more attention to?

I answered this last year I thought I’d update on how I did with those hopes. Last year’s details in bold and how I did on them in Italic

Now that I’m exercising more, I need to focus on what works best, the techniques for proper lifting, and the exercises that help the most and don’t aggravate the problem areas.

I have done some research and incorporated a few techniques in lifting and with dumbbells. My better half got a me book on back exercises that I have to get into more.

I’m an amateur at most of the hobbies I tinker with, but I’d like to advance in each and that takes more than doing them. So, I must improve my studying techniques and skills for those activities.

Worked on this goal but not hard enough. I’ve done more on my photography in stretching into new shooting areas and learning the limits of the lens and lighting. But there is still a long way to go.

I’ve always considered myself a good driver. I’ve been watching a few videos of autocross from club members and that might be a good test for an old man’s hand-eye-foot coordination.

I haven’t attempted the autocross yet, and I’m not sure if it’s for me. Not that I don’t challenge myself on a road or two now and then.

Sometimes I forget to appreciate the small things each day that make it special.

I’ve made huge progress in this area. And I’m much happier for it. Some days there are only small things to appreciate so you better get better at finding them.

Being a better listener is always on my agenda, and it always pays off big but sometimes I stray from that logic.

I know I’ve talked less and listened more this year. Learned a lot about people from listening. And this has helped my decision-making process.

Details for this coming year that need more attention.

Teaching my grandson important skills with tools – Teaching my granddaughter more artistic techniques – Making my youngest granddaughter laugh and smile – Utilizing the tools at my disposal better like my printer and cameras – Get involved in changing the direction of this country – Oh yeah, my engine compartment needs detailing even though it looks nothing like below.

Not my job

Self-checkouts irritate me – I don’t use them. And when I’m forced to they always seem to have issues. They seem to be taking more of the lanes to where I might have to adapt.

I will resist this as long as possible. You raise prices and expect me to do your job so you can be more profitable. And then someone wants to stop you and check a receipt, screw that. If you don’t trust me to do the job, get someone to do it.

The jobs and people interaction if you hire the right ones will keep bringing people to your stores. The jobs provided for young and old people and give them the opportunity to build on something for the future or make their senior years livable.

Mr. Yates behind his counter in his old general store on Main Street. I think I shot this in the mid-70s when I worked 2 doors up and would come over on break and get a couple of 5 cent popsicles on hot summer nights. No we didn’t have AC at that job. Photo by Mike Hartley

I’ll always go to a person at checkout if I can. I like saying “thank you, have a nice day” when they finished ringing me out. The alternative is flipping a discreet bird to a machine.

I never liked shopping in the first place and this change doesn’t improve it for me so far.

Bombs Away

I believe I have a black walnut tree in my back yard. I also believe there are several in the neighborhood and surrounding area. Then again, I’m no tree expert but these boulders sound like Aaron Judge hitting a baseball through the forest when they fall.

I walk outside or I’m lying in the hammock, and I hear these things dropping like a big rock. Had one bounce in the street in front of me the other day.

When mowing the back with the push mower these potential ankle breakers are all around lurking like land mines.

They are larger than golf balls, but smaller than baseballs. So, heads up if you’re walking around outside. I don’t mind getting hit with the occasional oak nut dropping from the 2 trees out front. But these monsters are concussion material.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It was a nice evening to grill out yesterday.
  • There was no way I was going to make it through the SNF game.
  • I didn’t think it was possible for another modern-day Hitler to happen. I was wrong.
  • Holding some of my grandchildren today will give me hope and determination.

Start

This is going to be a different week for me. I hope to push myself more in several areas and challenge myself.

I’ve fallen into a relaxed mindset this summer. Not that I haven’t worked hard, just not at the hobbies that are important to me as much as I should have.

I don’t mind that I did that. Maybe I needed a mental refresh. And I did have that thought looking up at the sky from the hammock yesterday, but at the same time I bolted up from it 15 minutes later and felt the need to get to work.

It’s not that I stopped shooting or writing. I even did more carving than I had in a bit. But drawing and painting went nowhere.

I’m also going to increase the workout.

But first some breakfast and taking the blinders off so I can get a grip on the day.

Capturing Images

What’s your #1 priority tomorrow? – The daily writing prompt wanting me to divulge vital information.

Waking up would be a nice start to the day. After that my priority is to go out and do some photography. I’ve been so slack at that lately that I’m getting pissed at myself. I think I’ll make the entire week about shooting.

In looking at my 10-page list of photo ideas and projects I should have no trouble getting to work. One of the projects I had just started was shots of the local places of worship. This area is filled with them, some very old, some very new and modern. A lot with unique architecture.

But with all the things going on with churches I worry someone is going to get spooked. It’s a sad day when people can’t go to church or the store or school in peace.

It’s interesting that people with a camera now stand out as suspicious. Where someone with a cell phone can pretty much do the same thing totally clandestine.

Scheduled Saturday

Doctor Feelgood at the helm this morning. The best I’ve felt all week. I think some exercise is in order with the treadmill and some light weights this morning.

It’s also going to be a photographic day. I’ll do some studio work when the rain starts later. Some portrait work is also on the agenda this afternoon. Then a ton of editing this evening trying to finish up a few projects.

This morning is prep for some of the family shots.

There are a few dozen chores awaiting me and some family time after that. So, a packed day indeed.

I’m taking the cover off in hopes of a short ride before the day’s activities and rain remove that from being possible.

What lurks behind the curtain? Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Only through harder effort will I improve beyond where I’m at.
  • Chapstick season is approaching.
  • Funny the party in total power can’t keep the government running. The party looking for compromise is the party that has none.
  • If you thought there were a good number of people in dire need of help before, just wait.
  • The notes some instruments hit touch my soul.

A bright start

Less pain than yesterday so a victory to start the day. And a beautiful sunny day outside to enjoy and revel in. I’ll open the shed soon for the implements to battle Mother Nature. The hammock and cushions are already out.

An open day except a trip to Lowes and some chores. A busy weekend ahead filled with family and activities.

The rain was really needed. I’m worried that it’s been so dry that the color this year might be a bit muted.

Fun work

List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter. I answered this question last year in a post called Pursuing and it’s still the same answer this year.

I will add three things I’d like to pursue each day that I’ve been slack on starting since retirement last year.

  • Volunteer at local animal shelter.
  • Make someone else’s life better each day.
  • Mentor to my grandchildren.

I have really liked and grown to love the design of the Mazda Miata. Its designer Tsutomu “Tom” Matano passed recently and I’m one of his fans.

In an article/obit in AutoWeek I was reading the subhead said “He was not only a great designer, he seemed to be having more fun than anyone else doing it.” What a quote about a professional and person at the same time.

I can attest to the joy that car has given me and many others I’ve met. Must be part of that infectious spirit he put into it.

Next year mine will be a decade old. Time for a good refresher and some additions. The top needs a little work, some suspension and exhaust replacements. Maybe a rear spoiler and see how much a new display screen costs, the sun has gotten to the corners of the original.

It’s under cover now with the rain today, but tomorrow we go for a spin. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Memories become more valuable as time passes.
  • It’s very unsettling to watch friends who will be in a difficult way because of choices they have made.
  • The need for many things, is growing fast and maybe beyond the ability of charitable people.
  • There are a host’s opportunities out there every day for the taking.

A paper boy

I let my mind wander when I took this photo. My first job ever was a paperboy. That can be hard work if you don’t like riding a bike and carrying a big sack over each shoulder and having full baskets on each side. But I loved riding bikes, and I was young and foolish and didn’t know how much my back would hurt from that and years of abuse after it with heavy loads.

That was the way it was done when I was growing up. Not some people in a car, whipping them out of the window. We used to have paper boxes that were attached to mailboxes. Well, in full disclosure, my mom did feel bad for me a few times when the snow was deep and got the car out and helped me with rounds. But an inch or two on the roads was passable on a bike. It was just COLD.

How much longer will the sight of a Newspaper on sidewalk Photo by Mike Hartley
How much longer will the sight of a Newspaper on sidewalk be seen. Photo by Mike Hartley

Really, I was thinking how much longer an image of a paper sitting on a driveway or sidewalk will be around? I’ve had some talks with people who have been in the industry and that day doesn’t seem far off as it once did. The pace of change keeps rolling along. To me it’s a symbol of what this country has become. We don’t make squat anymore.

While the flow of information, opinions, images, videos fly around at the speed of light. It also does it in a very superficial way in some cases. There used to be a tabloid rag called the National Enquirer. A totally sensationalist publication. Extreme headlines and stories. A mix of controversy, titillation, and fantasies all rolled into a print publication. Now people want that in their hourly updates and that it to be fresh trash every few minutes at the most.

Not only that, think of what you’re missing. The other day I found the clipping of my mother’s mother, wedding announcement from an old local paper. My kids will find clippings of me playing little league baseball and our wedding announcements. And pictures. My parents and my generation may be the last to print out photos in any great quantity or have newspaper clippings to pass to the next generation.

Well, there is no such thing as a big daily anymore. And your local paper probably has disappeared years ago or is a shell of itself and will fall. Even the big ones have had huge print circulation losses. But in some ways are more read now than in the past with the online efforts some have undertaken. Not in every case though.

That is the issue. How does the industry make money when things change so rapidly in the online world. Only time will tell as technology, tools and trends keep changing. I do miss the days of kids delivering them on bikes. The guy in the old car doesn’t slow down to wave.

Really, I have no worries. I mean you’re always going to need newspapers if you live in Maryland and enjoy eating crabs, right? And that is a lot of people, so I guess I’m safe for a little while.

I do have a prediction for our local market. The Baltimore Sun will cease print within this decade even though they are owned by Sinclair. And I think there is a decent chance The Washington Post will cease when commercial printing along with their own cost more than its worth. And that day will certainly be within the next decade.

My guess is the last day the last press is taken offline and there are no more newspapers, the Internet will go DOWN. That would be Karma. Then I could tell my grandchildren why what I did for 5 decades was relevant.

On brand

What brands do you associate with?

I answered this question from the daily writing prompt last year in this post called Brands. It’s an extensive list.

I’ll update one thing. I switched back and the last new computer was a Dell.

Let’s add a few new items to the list.

I’m a domestic muscle car guy by heart. But I’ve had a great run of luck with Mazda cars and SUVs.

It’s my mission to not use Amazon or Walmart for any purchases. I didn’t like them decades ago and I don’t like them now.

I wouldn’t know, a fashion brand if it fell over my head with the label in front of my eyes.

If this poll were taken decades ago Kodak would have been an important brand to me.

I’m not interested in luxury brands. No problem with them, just not my style.

Ah, I left out my favorite sports brands in last year’s list – New York Yankees – Green Bay Packers – Maryland Basketball

Peaceful

The firepit is getting a good bit of use and I hope to keep using it through the fall a lot. I had it going for about 6 hours last night. It was nice sitting and standing by myself peacefully by the fire. I find it relaxing sitting outside this time of year with a fire.

With rain coming the next few days I’ll clean and cover it again and look forward to another burn on the weekend.

More

The daily writing prompt asks – What could you do more of?

Okay, just off the top of my head.

I could do more work on my hobbies (photography, drawing, carving, painting, writing) which would lead to more completed projects.

Keep in touch with old friends more

I could spend more time loving family and friends.

More fires in the firepit.

I could always do more work in my yard.

Putting my toes in the sand at the beach.

I’d like to spend more time driving my Miata.

I certainly could do more volunteering.

Appreciating Nature.

I could travel more.

Sunrises and sunsets.

Last year I answered sleep. And I did need more sleep. I’m doing a little better but still sleep less than average.

Great day

I slept in this morning after rising in the middle of the night. Worked hard through the day mowing and trimming trees. I took a 5-minute break and grabbed the camera and caught two visitors to my back yard.

With some of the foulage dropping they can’t hide as easily.

I was lazy and didn’t get my monopod out so my apologies for the sharpness.

The shower I’m about to hop into is going to feel great.

Hopefully I’ll have some more time this evening for creativity.

Fall

The fall season kicks off in about 9 hours here in the Eastern time zone of the U.S. I like fall till the leaves are gone, then I start to get depressed.

It’s nice being outside by a roaring fire in late afternoon or early evening. The colors of the season are wonderful while they last. It’s the season of our wedding anniversary and we have a nice number coming up this year.

We love getting to the beach in the offseason before it gets cold, we usually squeeze in a few days at the shore.

I don’t like the days getting much shorter on sunlight. And the intensity of the sun fades so what I do get doesn’t feel as strong as those summer days in the hammock.

The days I’ll be riding around with the top down are numbered. And the days it will sit under a cover will increase as the weather get sloppier.

The grass will still need mowing for a few more weeks and then I’ll winterize the equipment. Oh, and the most important aspects of winter. Getting the heating systems services soon and upgrading our attic insulation.

I have another 6-8 weeks before I go into my winter funk. This premature fall we had during summer weeks has already got me worried it might be a cold winter.

So, I’ll make the best of that remaining good weather and appreciate the coming color of the season.

Advice

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – An interesting ask by the daily writing prompt.

I can’t think of any answers better than the ones I gave last year to the same question in a post titled “Consider the Source” I listed advice from various points in life and thought I covered it pretty well. Please check it out, some might be of use.

I will add one to the list though in this year’s post.

It takes courage to grow old.

Ride

Just a few shots from my short ride though Howard County yesterday. It helped clear my confused mind.

Out Route 99, a freshly painted antique.

Beautiful farm country.

Lots of clouds over farmers. Much respect for that profession.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I had better jump on yard work for the next 2 days. I see a lot of rain symbols after that.
  • If I were a betting man, my money would be on the government being shut down.
  • I’m so happy for our neighbors. Their son is getting a start in a major league game this weekend.
  • It took a long time but I’m finally gaining some confidence. Just when I don’t need a lot of it.

Misjudged

I’ve misjudged a few things in life. I love it when I misjudge something, and it turns out in a positive way. Sometimes there aren’t any ramifications, positive or negative. But most commonly when misjudging things there can be negative implications.

Recently I’ve come to the realization I’ve misjudged something important and now I have to adjust. Some of it was new information so it wasn’t a total misjudgment, but I should have seen it coming. There were hints along the way.

Live, learn and adapt is what I’m doing again and making it work for me instead of everyone else. A common flaw of mine, pleasing others first or only and putting my interest aside. Well I’m too old to spend time trying to enlighten, satisfy or and please some. So changes are coming.

Who gets the hook next

I’ve always enjoyed late night TV and the humor poked at life. I’m sorry CBS and ABC have made the decisions they have to appease pumpkin head and his hoard. I don’t expect this to stop. He declared me the enemy in his first term and endangered my life, so we have been on the outs since then.

Of course, it might be some time before he gets worried about my singular level of discontent and disrespect. Then again, things are happen very quickly, and he has been successful at dividing and concurring at an unexpected pace.

So where does it stop. Is all but praise for him unacceptable? Is life for all of us one soon to be one of his kiss ass cabinet meetings? He’s threatening to pull FCC licenses of those he doesn’t like.

I’m not sure where everyone stands but I’m not kissing ass or the ring.

Time to think of more positive things and get the day rolling in a good direction. I have a taste for a pit beef sandwich for lunch and a ride with the top down. Only then, will I will return to chores.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • If you take care of things, they last. Unless it’s a piece of crap in the first place.
  • The tail is wagging the dog.
  • One of my best friends birthdays is today. Going to celebrate.
  • My need for TV in the future might not be needed. I’m not into state sponsored propaganda.

Thursday Doors – Mt Airy

I didn’t prioritize correctly and get out for some new shots so pulling a few from the archive again. I’m going out this weekend to capture next week’s doors so I can get back in rhythm again.

The town of Mt. Airy Maryland had a few interesting buildings I thought I’d share.

Join the fun of Thursday Doors. The link to Dan’s Site – No Facilities to see many more talented displays of grand entrances. Wishing everyone good health and seeing you next week. And as always thank you Dan.

Reflecting

When I used to reflect, it would depress me because of the wasted time and opportunities. Now I use it as motivation.

When I opened the bellows on that camera it reminded me of getting out of bed in the morning.

I’m going to speak to my kids about all the old cameras we have. If they aren’t interested in them, I’m thinking about clearing a few out. I’ve got a lot of stuff I need to clear out.

I don’t intend to waste any time this evening. An early meeting that just wrapped up and now it’s back to work behind the lens. And no, I won’t be using this camera below.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • That pesky cough is returning.
  • I’m not looking forward to ChapStick season.
  • The most effective disease control I can think of is to remove RFK Jr from office.
  • I like the way Siri says No Problem when I say Thank You.

Finally

I spent the last few years debating what firepit I wanted, and I finally ordered one. And after spending a few hours in front of it last few nights, it’s money well spent. It gets me outside more and I need more of that. I should have done it many years ago.

Plus, it’s nice sitting by the fire with my better half.

A Solo Yukon pit. Photo by Mike Hartley

It’s also going to be good exercise splitting and moving wood. I have a few more evenings of old wood, but beyond that I’ll need to order a cord.

I do know one project will be putting in pavers around the area in some interesting design. Probably sooner than later.

I’m not sure how much I’ll be out in the dead of winter. Who knows, maybe I’m turning over a new leaf.

The second thing that finally came was the replacement lighthouse that covers our wellhead. I have no idea why it was left so high off the ground. It had two big bushes that had engulfed it when we moved here.

They were ugly bushes that each year seemed to attract paper wasp nest. We eventually cut them down and put up this black and white lighthouse over it. Here it is below a few winters ago.

And here it is this past winter. It had finally bitten the dust. It separated from the base. The wire railings at the top had broken or fallen and the wood was rotten. It lasted 11 years, maybe 12. The solar light was still working.

We finally got our new lighthouse and the solar light connected. Balanced it and working on the stone surrounding it. Got a few more buckets to bring out. And this one is impervious to rot so it will outlast me.

Not the day for the shore

It’s going to be a wet and windy day on the Maryland shore today. And the rain will spread inland to us also but I’m hoping to still spend some time outside this morning.

Angry seas. Photo by Mike Hartley

I do miss that sunrise I usually watch over the Atlantic. And chance of a sunset looks dim. A few days of rain are needed in this area anyway.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Creating something each day is a lot of fun. Creating many things a day is a lot more fun.
  • Chopping wood is good therapy.
  • I’ve fallen behind on technology. And I’m now fine with that.
  • I was lazy this morning and didn’t get out before daylight like I hoped. Here’s wishing for another shot at it tomorrow morning.

Lesson 2

Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life.

I still like my answer to this question from the daily writing prompt I called Lessons from last year. In that long list I left out one important item.

Learning early is key. I started late and pissed away my high school years, even though I graduated, and didn’t even complete the first year of college. So, while I quickly caught on by learning on the job and picking up skills, I felt behind..

But if I had started 4-5 years earlier, I wouldn’t have been playing catch-up at the beginning of my career.

Sunday Choices

It felt good to get the Dremel tool out and do a little work with it. I was playing around with carving some seashells. A theme my granddaughter loves – the sea – and I do all I can to encourage her. Broke the first few, but I’m getting the knack of it.

Sort of wishing I was at the shore with this view. I could use a nice cold frozen drink. It’s still a beautiful day right here today.

The beer was my sons, and the wine is his better half’s. Photo by Mike Hartley

Football is a far thought from wasting time on. I’ll catch highlights later. It’s not that I don’t like the game, I do. It’s just to beautiful outside and there won’t be many more days like it.

I’ve put in a few hours work, now it’s time to play before I light the grill. And maybe a late night-ride later.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I feel out of place in most places.
  • I read a quote that said, “Happiness is only real when it’s shared.” I might be less happy than I thought.
  • Not knowing what I’m doing isn’t a problem. Lots of people tell me often.
  • Action is one of the keys to telling you about people. Inaction can tell you a lot also.

Get a handle

I keep trying to get a handle on life, but it keeps illuding me at times. Some doors are locked. Some are stuck. But I keep trying to find the handle each day that opens to something to make me smile.

Turn please. Photo by Mike Hartley

All kinds of concerns today. A grandchild under the weather. Many decisions and plans to be made. Not feeling my best this morning. Lots of chores facing me but haven’t had any seat time in the car the last few days.

We need to hit the store, but I hate shopping. I miss my kids, but they are busy. I’d love to spend the day photographing but I have week’s worth of landscaping ahead of me.

Life is about choices, and I’ve got a lot to make. But that is the norm in life, it just seems to get overwhelming at times.

I guess I’ll start today by getting that electrician list together and measuring the gravel area so I can add pavers. And clean the firepit and grill for later use today. Then move the woodworking tools outside. Sounds like a good start and fine choice.

Have a great morning all and try to make the best choices for yourself.

Sat Sat Saturday

I’m sorry, I started this post off laughing at how happy I used to be at the last workday of the week. That feeling of relief having completed another brutal 4-5 or 6 days of work depending on the schedule that week. That feeling is gone now for me.

There are all kinds of thoughts on retirement. Some are comfortable and happy continuing their work for a lifetime. Others try to retire as early in their life as possible. Most work till somewhere around the normal retirement age of the late 50s to the early 70s.

I wish I had retired earlier, but all things in their own time as my mother would say. I do know I’m enjoying getting the time to do a little living.

A call from an old friend who hasn’t made the best decisions along the way will never be able to retire. He actually did, just long before he should have. Another friend who could have retired many years ago is still working. He just loves the challenge in front of him.

Yet another who is younger by a few years would like to retire but is just a few years away from being in the right position I’m guessing. There are just as many reasons why people do and don’t retire as there are people.

I know I’m more active now, I’m happier each day, I’m getting some proper rest for the first time in many decades, I’m eating better and smarter. I’m more relaxed which helps the creativity.

Today is a good example. Besides some chores I hope to get some exercise outside on a beautiful day. And some seat time in the Miata. We started off the weekend at a local favorite last night, Oscars Ale House in Woodstock where we had another great meal.

So, it’s a Saturday morning with an open weekend. HELL YEAH, the tunes are already filling the basement air as I move between the shed, bringing the tools for the day out and the computer. My better half was kind enough to bring me a few fresh baked cinnamon buns for breakfast.

And I’m moving as effortlessly as a jellyfish. I hope I feel that way at the end of the day.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Time is an incredibly valued commodity that can’t be traded.
  • What I Like About You – a great song from The Romantics. Never fails to get my body moving and singing.
  • I always feel behind when I don’t get an early start.
  • Time to put a few miles on the tires tonight.
  • And while I’m out I’ll collect some night shots.

If you’re looking for help

If you’re looking for help, see THEFIXR. I know my 2-seater fixes whatever is ailing me. I think I’m going to have to look into one of those personal license plates. I’ve worked hard all my life, might as well personalize it a bit.

Now there is one car I’d love to drive. Photo by Mike Hartley

I have seen some instances of people putting these big V8s in Miata’s but that is a substantial rebuild for that car. But if I ever played the lottery and won it would probably be sent out for that change before the first check came in.

There have been a few periods in my life where I haven’t had a vehicle I enjoyed driving. I can’t believe I survived those times. I loved driving a lot and when I had my 74 Camaro or the 85 Honda Shadow 1100 and my Miata now.

All 3 are great cruising machines. Not so great in the off season of winter, being rear wheel drive and manuals, but a guaranteed smile any other time of year.

I’ve got to get up from here and get to some chores so I can do some road time when the temps warm in a few hours.

Support system

With a good support system life is a breeze in the shade on a hot summer day. If you’re missing a few struts, replace them. Strong friends and family keep life supported.

I’ve been neglecting one of my support systems and I finally went to a podiatrist yesterday. My toe is on the mend. Life and stability return.

If you’re well supported, you can strut your stuff. Photo by Mike Hartley

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I wonder if my children now feel like I did in the 60s.
  • I’m tired of working in the yard, time for a shower and a ride.
  • There is a lot of talk and not much action.
  • You really start to feel gravity as a senior.

Leading

Do you see yourself as a leader? – Now there is an interesting question from the daily writing prompt.

Yes, I see myself as a leader. I try to lead by example. For instance, the saying on the tee shirt I have says, “Those who say it can’t be done, shouldn’t interrupt the people doing it.” I noticed one of my friends (who’s the president of a large company) reading it and smiling.

I’ve been in lead positions professionally as a manager. Even a part owner at one time. I try to lead my family in the right direction.

Leadership is stressful. It’s taking responsibility beyond yourself. It’s a ton of work. You will never please everyone. If you’re a leader you better be able to communicate well.

Life is simpler now. The only leadership responsibilities I have now are leading grandchildren from one game to another, when we are watching them.

Then again, I might get active again and try to replace the leadership of this country.

After a two-week hiatus I’m returning to the Thursday Doors vigil. Sorry for the absence but it was unavoidable.

Of course, the place is so old that most of them don’t fit or close well.

Doors on hills are always interesting.

Notice the bottom of the door cut off. I should have stood down there with it and gave it a better perspective.

Two things

This date 9/11 has two significant meanings to me. First, it’s my mother’s birthday. And obviously it’s the date of those tragic terror attacks. How quickly events like that fade from people’s priorities to pause for a few minutes this morning and respect all those that perished that day. Those who continue to perish because they worked at that site, those in our armed services that have fought that threat from that day forward.

Wall of Newspaper front pages on 9/11/2001 from around the world at the Newseum. Photo by Mike Hartley

It was the only one of my mother’s birthdays that I wasn’t with her that day in 2001. I had planned to take off early and be with her for the afternoon and dinner but that didn’t work out, being it was such a busy news day.

Her birthday is a day I’m able to smile about a little bit. The anniversary of her passing is more difficult. If there is any goodness in me it’s because of her. Raising my sister and I from an early age and being both provider and both parents was incredible. Long before there was help and support for that kind of thing.

She was from a generation and time that endured a lot. And she had many personal and medical challenges. But she always came through them. She worked hard, she was strong, sometimes outspoken but very respectful, compassionate, charitable and loving. She believed there are good in everyone.

I love her and miss her but feel she is part of me always. Happy Birthday Mom.

Mom and I in simpler times.

Out and about

Yesterday was a free afternoon so I headed out for some cruising time with the top down. I just don’t get some people with convertibles. I understand I can tolerate heat and cold more than most. And that people might be on their way to an event and be done up nicely and not want wind damage.

The people running around with the tops up on beautiful days is astounding to me. So, to each their own. I’ll provide the balance in the force by going topless more often than not. The top is up when it’s under the cover and if I get caught in a rainstorm.

I traveled the back roads of Howard County for the most part. On a sunny day there are beautiful tree lined ups and downs with twists and turns.

Not today though. Rain and clouds are obscuring a beautiful day. I’ll use the time to catch up on some indoor tasks and work on a few hobbies.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The weight scale and I are on speaking terms without cursing again.
  • Lies and bullshit usually becomes obvious to the majority after some time. But I believe incompetence will hit everyone first.
  • Rain sometimes gives me a pause from yardwork that I didn’t know I needed till it was here.
  • Learning to overcome things is a valued skill to get through life.

Looking in

Windows have always caught my eye. I guess it’s from the days of my youth. My mother told me of days she used to decorate store windows for Macy’s I believe. She would always point out windows that were decorated well or uniquely.

I saw this one across the street with the morning sun coming through it in Ellicott City of the storefront Made ON Main.

If this weather clears, I hope to get out and capture some more images today. Have a great morning.

Pumped Up

I was lucky to come upon a Facebook group a while back that I joined. It’s the Maryland Miata Club and I’ve met a lot of nice and knowledgeable people at the monthly meet-ups. Plus, it’s in the parking lot of one of my favorite Italian places called 3 Brothers.

Taking a short cruise before the meet was great with the top down, the late afternoon sun beating down and a cool low 70s day. What is not to like.

It felt good to go to the meet with a clean car and I’m going to do some more detailing today. It will be 10 years old early next year and it’s still looking strong. I believe I have about 60K on it. Since retiring and getting a beater car to use for errands and bad weather I don’t put much mileage on it each year.

And what I do is all pleasure which it should be in a car like that. Then again even when I was working it was my Remedy. For whatever ailed me at the time.

The club has some beautiful rides in it and some have really stuck some funds and technology into these roadsters.

I’m excited about getting out today already.

Here is a shot of one I liked at yesterday’s meet.

Photos by Mike Hartley

Am I part of the last generation that are true motorheads? I rode a cruiser for a few decades. But sales of Harley Davidsons are down and will continue to go down with an aging client base. The same is true for classic cars. I see very few young people at shows and the ones that are, have late model tech machines, not the muscle cars of days past.

Yes, there are a few exceptions but there are a lot of grey hair sitting behind these cars as well as the people attending the shows. My kids and most of my friend’s children have no interest in muscle cars or motorcycles.

So will these things lose value over time. Prices for them the last for decade or so seems quite high. Will parts to keep them going even become more difficult to acquire? What is going to happen to all these classics when we aren’t around anymore. Will they go the same way as every previous generation?

Traits

What personality trait in people raises a red flag with you? – An easy question from the daily writing prompt.

Wow, it’s not so easy. So many popped onto my fingers I didn’t know where to start. I guess I go with Selfishness being a trait that raises that flag.

Don’t know what to say except that I try to work hard to stay away from bad personality traits. They just make life more difficult and alienate people.

Some seem totally unaware of these traits or in total denial of them. I’m sure I’m guilty myself. None of us are perfect.

This week

Describe your ideal week. – Now there is a question for a Monday morning.

My mind wandered into the realm of what ifs, when thinking about an ideal week. But I’ll keep it reality based so it’s possible that this week is an ideal week.

Waking each morning healthy next to my better half, who is also healthy and happy, would be a nice start. Sharing breakfast together and planning day trips and time with the children and friends.

During the weekdays we hit small towns or a city like the Nation’s Capital and discover new places to eat. I photograph like I have endless time to process all the images. I paint and draw some. I carve and blog.

I share warm embraces with family and stories around the firepit. I raise a little hell with my best friends.

Spend a few hours with each grandchild.

Some romantic dinners/evenings with my better half.

Get some exercise.

I put the top down and absorb the sun on a day trip to the beach.

Take the time to help someone or do something for a stranger or maybe share some kind words.

Reach out to friends I don’t see often enough and chat.

Spend a few minutes in the hammock looking at the sky. Skip cutting the grass.

And if I still owned a motorcycle. I’d be heading to Bike Week in Ocean City MD this weekend.

Yeah Ragtops

I’m a Red Ragtop man myself. Of course mine is no classic like this one. But who knows, if I live a long time and hang onto my baby, someone might be shooting profiles of my classic design. I do have the first year of my model car.

This is a TOP DOWN week ahead. Photo by Mike Hartley

Music is inspiring me this evening. A song came on that was kind of a theme song for me for a bit in my life when I had longer hair. The song – Almost Cut My Hair – by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young came on and made the hairs on the back of my neck tingle a bit.

I’ve thought about letting it grow again. I did a bit during Covid, and my better half was not happy about that trial. Plus, I’m lazy now and keeping it short is easy.

And the next song, another favorite and the town I live in – Woodstock – by the same CSNY. Ah the days of youth. Nice memories.

I’ve got to work out some kinks in the legs so I’m going to see if the treadmill will help. This is going to be a great week ahead.

Have a great evening.

Message in a trunk

I’ve heard of the message in a bottle. But a message in a truck about a bottle.

Messages are all around us. Some good, some not so much. I’m going to work on imparting more positive messages to my grandchildren. Making sure they are confident and looking forward with their own vision and not someone else’s.

At one time in life, I subscribed to this thought. Photo by Mike Hartley

I wasn’t confident enough to follow my own path for a long time but now I’m getting with the program. Either worry, or emphasis on what other people thought resulted in much lost time and effort.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Football is back on Sundays. It’s too nice to spend the day inside though so tough luck NFL.
  • Bacon was on the list of must haves today.
  • I don’t know how many different types of weeds in the yard I have but its more than a few.
  • This is shaping up to be a much busier week than I anticipated.

Wishing

I was butterfly watching as I worked out in the yard yesterday. We are going to do our part and start planting some more wildflowers for them to enjoy. Observing them moving so effortlessly makes me think of my youth and moving with ease.

The mind drove the body like it was more youthful than its actual mileage, but a good night’s rest has restored me to be able return to the battle with mother nature today. I am proud of the progress I made, and this might be the best the place has looked in a good while.

There are two projects I think I’ll get professional help with. Moving a few of the 8×8 10-foot monsters today made me realize I don’t need to be wrestling with lots of them. There is more than enough to keep me busy and challenged.

For that retaining wall project, I’ll play sidewalk super.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’m proud I didn’t run out and waste money on the Powerball drawing.
  • It was nice not watching the news yesterday. I’ll just be double disgusted today.
  • I’m excited with anticipation about pulling the car cover off later this morning, washing it, having the better half in the other seat with the top down and no destination in mind.
  • There is a rack of baby back ribs calling my name from York Road.
  • That heat really fueled some heavy thunderstorms.

Saturday Side pipes

I’m sorry, I’m just a car addict. Comes from growing up in the 60s and 70s and it’s stuck with me since. And I love side pipes. I used to have a set of Hooker Headers with side pipes in flat black on a Red 74 Camaro that looked a lot like the set below.

They do introduce some extra sound inside the car but if that is a sound you love it’s fine.

Some cars wouldn’t look right without them.

I doubt I’ll have a big V8 again to attach a set to, but one can dream.

Relax

The daily writing prompt asks – How do you relax?

Relaxing always hasn’t been my specialty. My hobbies like photography, writing and other arts relax me. Going for a drive in the Miata is a great relaxer. The occasional day with my better half when we aren’t absorbed with tasks, chores or other obligations where we just kind of relax around the house.

Life is short, enjoy the view. Photo by Mike Hartley

Laying on the beach or wandering the boardwalk. Being on vacation with family and friends is sometimes very relaxing.

Just tinkering on the computer while listening to music works for me also.

Laying in my hammock also works great.

Go for a spin

I thought about going for a spin this afternoon. Not on this type of ride, just the stable 4 wheel one. No loops or flips on the agenda.

I haven’t been on my game this week. I’m behind in both chores and hobbies. But I am getting some rest finally. But boy does that impact production.

Our front door replacement is just about complete. I have to paint the trim boards on the inside. They are primed white but I’m putting a semi-gloss coat on them.

Onto the next project. Setting up the firepit in the patio area on Friday. My son and grandson are also coming for a visit. That means getting the tractor out for the young one.

Like the picture above I’ve gone round and round again. So, I will depart till I find another image to pair a thought or two with. Have a great afternoon.

Looking inward

The daily writing prompt asks today – Are you holding a grudge? About?

Another repeat question that I answered in a post last year called NOPE. And most of that is still accurate.

I won’t get into politics because I’m developing a serious one there.

In some ways I have a grudge against myself. I feel I’ve wasted some opportunities. I haven’t made the best use of time. I could have done more with the resources I’ve had. And while I look forward and try to change these things, it is something that eats at me.

Reading Goals

I’m constantly falling behind on my reading goals. Just keeping up with blogs I like and discovering new ones seems to be a challenge. And finding time to write a few lines with a new image or two is tough some days with life getting in the way often.

Are you meeting your reading goals? Photo by Mike Hartley

I’m not what most would consider well read. I do keep up with current events and history. I read a good bit about my hobbies and sports as well as a few other topics. But I’ve discovered the more I read the more I enjoy it.

Unfortunately, I enjoy a lot of things, so it’s been tough to expand the time for more. My better half reads up a storm. She polishes off books like I polish my car, often and with veracity.

Well, it’s better to have too many goals than too few. So let me go read up on proper firepit use before I burn something down.

Travel

Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home. – The daily writing prompt asks again.

I don’t have another story other than the one I did last year called Helsinki, to answer this question.

We haven’t been big travelers in the past but hope to take a few trips in the future. Scenic train rides interest me. So do river cruises.

A family member is in Australia now traveling on dream vacation. Just saw one of her Facebook posts this morning.

Another family member is leaving for Hawaii sometime this month. I guess I should get my behind in gear and get with the program.

In some ways I’m kind of a homebody. I’m not against travel, I’m just comfortable here also. But the question is well timed because we are going to make some reservations for an out of state visit before the end of the year. I spent part of yesterday looking at hotel rates.

It’s been a few years now since I’ve traveled to Washington. I worked there for a few decades. Time to go visit some of the things I never got a chance to because I was working too much.

If your traveling, be safe.

Attention Getters

To me, automotive paint is an art form in itself. The color blending process. The prep, and the number of coats of unknown formulas that turn out something like this. And I’ve always loved RED. I fell in love with a Medium Red on a 74 Camaro I owned.

I have a Soul Red Mazda Miata now and I get all kinds of questions and complements on the color.

From the car show at Turf Valley. Photo by Mike Hartley

And each time I go to a car show I see a new red I’d like to have my car painted. And this one really caught my interest. If I do get a new paint job it will have stripes or a design in it.

I’ve enjoyed shooting cars this season. About a month and a half to go for most of the shows in this area. Of course, lots of clubs continue to meet year-round like our Miata one. We just switch to Sunday afternoons in the shorter daylight months.

Well, it’s time to motor onto a different subject. We just knocked out another home renovation project by replacing our front doors. And we are both very pleased with the work of B.T. Windows and Doors. The next project is an electrician followed by attic insulation and then maybe a few windows replaced.

I’ve got to get up to my sons this month and do some power washing on his place. Too much talk about chores, back to fun.

Some baseball, some treadmill and some education.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • It’s been too long since I’ve had a fish at the end of the line.
  • I just realized our fleet of cars is getting a bit long in tooth.
  • When I get a good idea for a practical joke I get a really good smile.
  • A lazy day is easier to justify when retired.

I’m loving Labor Day

I fell asleep very early last night, so I rose very early this morning. I went back to bed mid-morning and slept till almost noon. I guess it’s fitting, being I’ve been laboring all weekend, so I took today off and enjoyed life some.

Finally got around to ordering a fire pit today. I wanted one last year but put it off but not this year. Hope to start making good use of that outside patio this fall and winter season.

Took a casual cruise and stopped for ice cream at Bruster’s with my better half. Grilled out some chicken and now ready to enjoy the evening. I’ve got some shots to download, some more writing to do and see if the artist easel calls my name.

This guy decided to pose for a mug shot just before dinner. Probably guilty of crapping on my car.

Visiting for building materials in my backyard.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The treadmill was glad to see me back.
  • I saw someone going down the wrong side of Rt 40 by Normandy this afternoon. They recognized this when traffic came over the hill at them. No accident luckily.
  • Standing outside on the last day of August yesterday, I never thought I’d be glad to stand close to the fire on the grill to keep warm. Usually, I’m sweating you know what off.
  • I’m having lunch with an old friend this week.

Joyful water

The daily writing prompt asks this Labor Day Monday – What brings a tear of joy to your eye?

I guess I’m a lucky guy because lots of events bring a tear of joy to my eyes. Just a few off the top of my head early this morning.

When my children and grandchildren leave after spending the day together. It’s so much fun.

Sometimes when I discover old family photos like I did this week.

When my better half or I get a personal gift from the kids/grandkids.

When we got our first pets.

The day I retired.

The day my children were born.

Seeing my grandchildren for the first time. Usually because my better half is crying so much.

Sometimes remembering a good thought when looking at an old picture of my parents who have long passed.

Watching a young couple get married and thinking way back when we said our I do’s.

Mirror

It’s good to look deep into the mirror once in a while. A good chance to be honest with yourself. A chance to see how many grey hairs are moving up from the beard to the scalp. A time to see the lines that life has left. Maybe catch the sight of a surgical scar. A time to evaluate how much life is left in those eyes.

Mirrored firewall, nice. Photo by Mike Hartley

A holiday weekend is upon us. Time for a cruise and maybe a stop at the town ice cream shop later. I hope to fire up the grill and cook some burgers and grill some scallops.

It’s funny how things changed so quickly. I remember being giddy with joy at having holidays. I worked a great number of them the decade before I retired and many before that. So having a holiday like most people was this strange thing for me.

Now in my second year, I’m taking that joy for granted already. Weekdays, weekends, holidays kind of blend together. Which is okay with me because every day is a holiday. Unless there’s a doctors appointment.

Time to step away from the computer and knock out a few chores before grilling and a spirited ride in the go-cart.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Music strikes many emotional chords in me.
  • I can’t believe it’s the traditional end of summer already. I’m disappointed in my beach attendance.
  • Would the world lose its mind if the internet went down?
  • If we ever sell this house, I’m going to have to cut out two bedroom doorframes that we have used to mark the grandchildren’s growth.

Berry me

I’ve heard of Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. Shot these in the little town of New Market Maryland. We love eating at The Derby Restaurant and Bar.

Needs some color. Photo by Mike Hartley

We will have to motor up that way in September for a meal and a stroll. I like shooting in that town.

A sweet place to stay. Photo by Mike Hartley

Not feeling myself this morning. Not as sharp as most mornings. Feeling like I’m in and out of it. Moments of clarity and then pauses. Might be due to the unusual amount of sleep I had last night. A full 8 hours which is almost unheard of in one stretch.

And that shot to the head I just took from the corner of the shed as I was weeding around it didn’t help. At least it didn’t bleed long.

We had a special week with grandchildren. A nice way to finish out their summers. A trip to the playground was a lot of fun on Thursday with the 4 month old, 3 year old and 6 year old.

Hand in Hand. Photo by Mike Hartley. Love by Grandchildren.

Got myself my first pair of Sketchers slip-ons. Now I can see myself purchasing a few more of these in the coming years. Not only are they comfortable and light weight, but I DON’T HAVE TO BEND OVER. Old men with bad backs rejoice. I may be late for this party but better late than never.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I don’t believe there is a reason for everything.
  • And some say tinkering isn’t working.
  • You come into this world alone, you exit alone. And a lot of the time in between you are alone in this world. You might think you’re not, but you ARE.
  • Find your therapy. Anything that keeps you alive.
  • I have rediscovered fruit smoothies.

Wild

Just a few of the wild visitors today besides my granddaughter. At least she wasn’t giving me the side eye.

I felt I had a visitor under my shed at times. Photo by Mike Hartley

I have a family of cardinals in my back yard but boy are they illusive.

He knows I was switching to manual focus and decided to bolt. Photo by Mike Hartley

My neighbor showed me a shot of a coyote that went through his back yard one night on a motion camera.

I love wildlife and I’m going to try to make use of this long lens and capture as much as I can.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • The family gems I find in photographs from my youth that my parents saved are treasures.
  • Chester Bennington’s voice spoke to me.
  • I can’t understand why my kids didn’t get my genes that make them keep their car clean in and out.
  • Taylor Hawkins drumming always got my arms moving.
  • Today’s definition of progress. I can see parts of both my desks now.
  • There are just some songs that demand the traction control button be turned off.

Have a safe holiday

Good day, garden.

A holiday weekend ahead. I’m sure the roads are already busy with people doing the Friday Early Out and off to their destinations. We won’t be going anywhere other than maybe a local stop or two.

Wishing all a safe and joyous weekend.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ve got to get a better workflow going.
  • There are some old work friends I need to touch base with.
  • Like people didn’t know RFK Jr. was going to be a cluster F.
  • I wrote a post about feeling good this morning and then Karma catches me with a plumbing leak in the ceiling.
  • I can’t wait to finish setting up my new computer and get to work on it.

Hang on, climb aboard

Life is tough. Sometimes our wings get damaged along the journey. Don’t give up, keep a strong grip on life.

Pull yourself up and keep taking one step ahead of the previous one.

Flowers by my neighbors, butterflies by nature. Photos by Mike Hartley

I’ve known people who have given up on life. I have occasionally myself. Luckily, I was able to turn those times around.

In some ways this is one of the sweet spots in life. After the difficulty of losing our parents and beginning our own journey into our senior years, we have had the pleasure of seeing more grandchildren. Also watching our own children’s families and careers blossom.

Fortunately, we also have had many family members and friends grow old with us.

Great challenges are ahead though. The inevitable loss of friends and family, those shared memories continued friendships here today, gone tomorrow.

I would love to grow old, but that means absorbing a lot of pain and loss along the way. Maybe even loneliness. I guess that old saying “be careful what you wish for” has some meaning through every stage of life.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I’ll be listening to doctors, not the government for my health decisions.
  • Thoughts and prayers for school shootings were never enough. And still aren’t today, or tomorrow.
  • I pick the route I drive now by weighing with one would I encounter less idiots along the way.
  • Great sunrise over the ocean this morning. Wish I was there.

Have a seat

The day is about get going again. I think I’ll grab the driver’s seat and make the best of it. I should go put the top down and take a spin.

Setting priorities is something I’ve been a bit lax in the last few months. I mentioned the other day I’m feeling more focused. I’m getting the cameras out of the bag each day even if its just for a few images. I’d like to spend a few hours a day photographing and editing at least. That rarely happens of course, but I’m in control of that, and I should change to make it the norm.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Watched another beautiful sunset yesterday. Life is good.
  • I overslept this morning and missed sunrise. Nuts.
  • USAFacts – Good information for making decisions.
  • I got some good news yesterday. That’s a nice change of pace.
  • Remember schools are in session again or will be soon so look out for the kids and those big YELLOW things you’re supposed to STOP FOR. We seem to have a problem with that in this area.
  • The more music I listen to, the happier I am.
  • If you see the Emergency Broadcast tests at night on TV you are a true night owl.
  • I love the stillness of 3am.

Good morning

I believe I’ll plant some wildflowers this coming year. I love butterflies.

I might have to go look for a few more shots of these today.

I wonder if I’m quick enough to capture one in flight.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • When the word reunion starts to appear, you are officially old.
  • It’s funny hope people who recognized cognitive decline in Biden, can’t see bat shit crazy in Trump.
  • If a restaurant wants me to scan a QR code to see the menu. I’ll eat someplace else because I don’t take my cellphone to eat often.
  • Chilly mornings in August are not my cup of tea.

Green with envy

Some paint jobs stop me in my tracks. This was one of them.

Hood up. Photo by Mike Hartley

Monday was productive on the chore front but lacking in the fun area. Maybe I’ll cure that imbalance today.

Our granddaughter will be here for a visit shortly. That will be fun. I’ve been missing her, and this will be a nice treat before she starts school next week. They grow up so fast. I think I remember saying that a while back about my own children.

Today’s focus in between chores and playing games with a 6-year-old, will be on making prints and building the photo site out. I have a little over 10K images there now. I hope to double that and organize it before the end of the year. It will be a good day to get the camera out and capture some new shots.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Children’s smiles are genuine. Not always the case with adults.
  • Do you know your neighbors?
  • For a time, the bathroom scale and I were not friends. Now we speak daily.
  • Exercise should be like eating, natural and done each day.

What

Every once in a while, I’ll see something new in nature. This one was hard to miss being he flew right in front of my face buzzing up a storm. I saw him land on the brick about 30 feet away and ran inside and grabbed a camera.

Came back out and was able to grab this before he flew away. I guess the ruckus as he flew by was actually the two of them in a battle. I didn’t even see it till I went to edit the photo, but it looks like he has a bee in his jaws.

Good morning and salutations. My motor is running strong this morning. Getting some things done around the home and yard. And in between a few minutes with the camera, computer or Dremel tool.

My neighbor’s wildflowers are attracting butterflies. I’m getting a few future posts together and working on my sons carving.

Still a lot of chores remaining for the afternoon so let me get back outside.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Something about a few thousand-armed National Guard troops roaming DC doesn’t give me more comfort. Makes me think about being around an unfortunate accident. I was thinking about spending some time down there this coming month but now I’m not sure. Probably would be a lot of great photo ops with armed troops around our national treasures.
  • I’m tired of football and it hasn’t even started. I’ll watch some games but all this hype and betting and preseason crap isn’t for me.
  • I’ve got the urge to start cooking more. That could be dangerous. Certainly messy.
  • Mowing is a good workout if your pushing it.

something is Bugging me

Classics from my youth.

It’s nice to see people still restoring these VW Beetles.

Lots of people learned how to drive a stick on one of these.

I think I first road in one in the late 60s.

Shots are from the Rally for the Wreaths held this past Saturday. Supporting the Wreaths Across America organization. The same ones who bring the Wreaths to my parents at Arlington National Cemetery each winter for the holiday. Saves me donating online. Plus, it’s better to see a smiling face when I give.

Spin

The wheels are turning in my head again and it feels good. I’ve had some good ideas and have started working on them. I’m also getting better at doing things instead of talking about them.

Looking up Old Columbia Pike from Main Street. Photo by Mike Hartley

Some wheels don’t have to turn at high speeds because they are constantly rotating. I’ve been slack on keeping my creative wheels turning on regular basis. I’m on a mission to change that and this week was a great start.

I’m working on a shell necklace for my granddaughter. Also spent some time sanding a few pieces and working on my photography. And I hope to make good use of this fine but cloudy Sunday.

Hoping your Sunday is a fine and happy one.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • I better start writing these memories down before they are gone.
  • It’s sad that sports won’t have the same meaning too much of our youth as it did to my generation. Gambling has not made it a game any longer.
  • Spend time learning instead of regretting time wasted previously not learning.
  • I just looked at two flower pictures I have framed. They were favorites of my Mother-in-law because they were from her garden. When I see gardens, I think of both of my mothers.
  • Donated yesterday. I hope to make that more common practice.

Lights

The Rally for Wreaths car show was held at the Turf Valley Resort today. I wish I had the time to shoot some more images but got a few lights worth sharing.

I didn’t go into the show concentrating on getting headlight images, but a few popped out while editing and I thought it might make a good post.

They moved the show to the larger lot this year. Some didn’t care for it. I liked it because the spaces were larger, and people weren’t crammed together so much.

The plan is to get a few hours of cruising in early tomorrow.

I wish I’d saved up for a classic car or kept my old 74 Camaro.

I am picking up some good recommendations for painting at these shows.

I’m pumped for our next Miata Club meet. I’ve got an idea for some photos that are different from the usual meeting ones.

I think I’ll take my better half to the next show in September at Mikey and Mel’s.

I’d better get some rest if I want to catch some sunrise images tomorrow.

Where did the week go

Time has flown by this week. Which is pretty much par for the course. I do feel a bit different though. I’m more focused and feeling more creative.

Now that the rains have stopped, I resumed my battle with Mother Nature yesterday. I was bent over and carried a few heavy objects today that I should have put in the wheelbarrow. Round 1 to Mother Nature.

I’m always excited for my daughter when she starts a new school year of teaching. I know she puts so much into it. So, to my daughter, and all teachers returning to the classrooms, I wish for your safety, health, patience, perseverance, strength and rewarding days with the children and pleasant meetings with the parents and administrations that have your back. Best of luck in this new school year. You are making a positive difference in this world.

I will do my best not to let errands, chores and tasks keep me from having a little fun this weekend. I’m headed out to a local car show this morning.

Stickers

I’ve never been a sticker or bumper sticker guy. The car should be clean. But I am modifying my stance slightly. I have a Maryland Miata Club sticker and one beach oriented below that my grandson picked out for me last week. They are now on my back window.

When my ride is clean, I just feel better. Like a flashback from my youth when my car/motorcycle was my pride and joy. I pulled the cover off and I’ll give it a bath first thing tomorrow.

Random Thoughts of the Day

  • Pulling weeds is a battle of wills.
  • Be prepared, things could get really bad economically, quickly now.
  • There are days I really miss riding a motorcycle.
  • Trying to decide on a new laptop brand. I’m down to 2.
  • It’s time to start thinking about talking in code. They are listening.

The daily writing prompt asks – Where did your name come from?

My parents. Other than that, I don’t know squat about it. I know when my mom called me by my full name that I was in trouble.

Okay now onto more important things. It’s Thursday and another sloppy start to the day in central Maryland. The Atlantic Ocean looks quite disturbed today with that hurricane churning offshore. I wish I was down there photographing the storm.

It certainly isn’t feeling like August here. More like early November. Hopefully we will have an Indian Summer and make up for these cool temps.

I’m going out to pull the cover off my car and give it a bath later. It’s car show season and I’m not showing up on Saturday with a dirty ride. If I’m not mistaken, the Turf Valley show will be my first stop that day.

I wouldn’t mind owning a ride like this, but I’d just get in trouble. Photo by Mike Hartley

Even though the color combination appeals to me and that giant 582 engine sounds good the gauge setup in this car caught my eye first.

This prompt got me thinking. I haven’t named my car yet. I’ll have to give this some thought. Maybe a personalized license plate. I just checked the first name that came to mind. Maryland has 7 character limit. How about MYTHRPY. I just checked the state site and it’s available.
